Anyone else watch season 4 yet?

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 21 April 2018 04:22 (seven years ago)

Finished it last night. It was very good, but I feel like it ends in a way that would allow me to walk away if season 5 (which has been promised) is uninspiring.

I've only read like 3 of the books, so there's always that.

grawlix (unperson), Saturday, 21 April 2018 11:33 (seven years ago)

just finished ep 4....

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Sunday, 22 April 2018 00:10 (seven years ago)

I lost interest mid first season due to serial killer fatigue. Is it worth picking up with s2?

Simon H., Sunday, 22 April 2018 00:21 (seven years ago)

I certainly think so. I am also mid-S4 and have no regrets.

fajita seas, Sunday, 22 April 2018 15:42 (seven years ago)

just wrapped season 4. really solid season. simon I think season 1 is the weakest but i still liked it.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 24 April 2018 20:28 (seven years ago)

I love the books, but I've never managed to get into the show, or Welliver's portrayal. It's well-made but I've never been gripped enough to keep watching.

That said, this season is part-based on Angels Flight, my favourite of the Bosch books, so I'll give it yet another try. Is it ok for someone who's only seen the opening episodes of every season?

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 18:06 (seven years ago)

you may miss some context on some character arcs / story lines but i think you could easily fill in the blanks as you go.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Thursday, 26 April 2018 17:21 (seven years ago)

Will this help to fill the Justified-shaped hole in my life? I’ve read the first two Bosch books and liked them but didn’t feel the need for any more.

Is the show funnier than the books, I guess is what I’m asking.

sciatica, Thursday, 26 April 2018 17:24 (seven years ago)

cant answer that v accurately as i havent read the books. but i did watch justified and i dont think this quiiiite scratches that same itch. maybe a little but bosch is not nearly as magnetic/dynamic as raylan was.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Thursday, 26 April 2018 17:38 (seven years ago)

Season 4 feels a little padded (better to disperse the padding evenly throughout than to shoot entire episodes of pure padding I guess) but agreed, it's solid and catchy. I keep finding myself expecting Marlo to order somebody executed.

Nothing close to the humor and rich, good-natured ain't-humanity-somethingism of Justified, though. This is a show about people in bad moods wearing business attire and talking to each other on cell phones.

mick signals, Friday, 27 April 2018 01:52 (seven years ago)

I don't know why but I always pictured Bosch as Jon Polito

Will this help to fill the Justified-shaped hole in my life?

yes

we just finished the last season. Jamie Hector is fantastic in this. So are the guys playing Crate & Barrel. Bosch and Billets and Chief Irving are good but not as much fun as the aforementioned.

There are a several moments in Season 4 that are really all-time - so much rewinding just to see it again

This is the Overlook, right? Connelly’s wannabe 24 novella that was serialised in the nyt. (Its good, though.)

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 17 April 2020 23:52 (five years ago)

Bosch is back, baby!

I feel like all the seasons have been contemporaneous in recent memory for me, but the fact the daughter character is somehow an adult now is jarring

But I mean, the pilot came out in early 2014 and it’s now 2020, so...

bosch is good, i liked it when he quietly radiated conviction so hard his daughter became a fascist too

adam, Tuesday, 28 April 2020 13:16 (five years ago)

i enjoyed the last season even if half of it was just wrapping up loose threads from the previous season. i feel like in the middle seasons they started to move slightly away from the COPS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT AND ANYONE WHO GETS IN THEIR WAY IS EVIL philosophy, but they really circled back to it in the end. i loved maddie and honey chandler continuously having to explain the basics of the u.s. justice system to bosch. why would criminals need defense attorneys? need i remind you that COPS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT AND ANYONE WHO GETS IN THEIR WAY IS EVIL. also wasn't crazy about them making j. edgar a proponent of vigilante justice at the very last minute.

na (NA), Monday, 11 May 2020 14:20 (five years ago)

Bosch is such a boomer cool dad caricature, particularly this season - but I guess that makes him realistic. He reminds me of so many people around me.
Sad to see this ensemble go and it will definitely leave a hole in my TV landscape - this was such a welcome break from blue-tinged scandi-noir copycats.
I guess they could launch a reboot with a new cast for Bosch's second act - god knows there is enough material around.

mh, Wednesday, 14 July 2021 14:34 (four years ago)

i found the last season mildly disappointing, too focused on revisiting old characters instead of presenting a compelling crime story.

na (NA), Wednesday, 14 July 2021 14:45 (four years ago)

I liked the final season well enough, though it seemed like they wrote the end first and then had to get there any way they could — a lot of stuff seemed telescoped or handwaved in the final couple of episodes. Not gonna be watching the spinoff. Might read more of the books now, though.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 14 July 2021 14:55 (four years ago)

yah the season seemed rushed, especially the last couple of episodes.

I read many of the Michael Connelly Bosch novels years ago, but have been working my way through them again recently as audiobooks. I’m up through The Closers (2005), the 11th I think.

Listening to them in the middle of the night when I haven’t been able to sleep has been comforting. I’m always looking forward to the next book.

I haven’t seen the TV series yet and am not sure I want to at this point

Dan S, Thursday, 17 March 2022 00:46 (three years ago)

Lol, I’m the opposite. Read only 1 of the books ages ago. The TV series is excellent (we’ll, at least thru S3).

that's not my post, Thursday, 17 March 2022 00:54 (three years ago)

It's pretty good, great cast and more than most cop shows (outside of CBS dramas) there's a discomfort you have to face in rooting for the kind of cop you'd probably really hate IRL because Titus Welliver is so charismatic.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 17 March 2022 00:55 (three years ago)

Season 2
The security guard/bad guy mastermind was too oily and obviously the villain from his first appearance, six episodes before Bosch figures it out - can't decide if that was on purpose or if the actor overplayed it.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 17 March 2022 00:58 (three years ago)

I already have such a mental picture of who Harry Bosch, Kizmin Ryder, Jerry Edgar, Irvin Irving, Terry McCaleb, Graciela Rivers, Buddy Lockridge, Jack McEvoy, Teresa Corazόn, Keisha Russell, Grace Billets etc etc are from the books

Dan S, Thursday, 17 March 2022 01:00 (three years ago)

also Eleanor Wish and Rachel Walling

Dan S, Thursday, 17 March 2022 01:23 (three years ago)

I was surprised when the S2 villain was revealed but I'm also kind of dumb

Vinnie, Thursday, 17 March 2022 01:38 (three years ago)

The TV show does a great job of wrapping up some story lines within a season while carrying other storylines - like the murder of Bosch’s mother - across seasons.

S7 was the weakest but still worth watching. As someone said earlier ITT, they kinda speed thru the S7 plot in order to wrap up a bunch of storylines. Several callbacks to characters from previous seasons. But still worth watching…

Very weird when Bosch's daughter and her friend meet the lawyer and start fangirl/boying out.

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 24 April 2022 23:28 (three years ago)

I've been reading the books and Bosch is also not that nice to his next partner Ignacio Ferras - The Overlook (2007), The Brass Verdict (2008), and Nine Dragons (2009)

Nine Dragons, focusing on his daughter in Hong Kong, is one of Connelly's more memorable stories

Dan S, Monday, 25 April 2022 01:05 (three years ago)

I quit around the time of The Crossing as they were getting a bit samey and daft, but I wonder if they got better again. Agree 9 Dragons was a fun one, very 80s action movie – also Angels Flight, the only one where he lets his writerly pretentions get ahead of him, doing a mini-Day of the Locust riff. It’s really good! Don’t watch the show as I don’t enjoy watching Welliver.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 25 April 2022 07:29 (three years ago)

i kinda hate maddie tho she is a p plausible daughter of her dad i guess

mark s, Monday, 25 April 2022 19:55 (three years ago)

I like that her introduction was “I haven’t seen my daughter since she was three, she’s good I guess IDK” and then it turns out she’s somehow exactly like her father. Strong genes.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 25 April 2022 21:08 (three years ago)

mark s, Monday, 25 April 2022 21:29 (three years ago)

I'm really liking the Mickey Haller series (The Lincoln Lawyer, The Brass Verdict, The Reversal and The Fifth Witness so far). There is some overlap between Bosch and Haller in the novels, because *spoiler* we learn they are half brothers. Is he much of a figure in the streaming series?

Dan S, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 00:04 (three years ago)

No but the first season of The Lincoln Lawyer is dropping on Netflix in a couple of weeks

mark s, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 18:03 (three years ago)

mark s, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 19:55 (three years ago)

Watching Reacher before starting Bosch was a mistake, I keep hoping for him to go sicko mode and he hasn’t really done that since throwing the bad captain through a window.

mh, Sunday, 8 May 2022 02:46 (three years ago)

yeah the title sequence visually is a decent successor to the orig but the music is a hard miss
4 episodes in this just feels like a more or less natural S8 vs a reboot S1
not bad, still waiting to see where it goes

William Devane! One of the first 'character' actors who ever made an impression on me as the villain in Hitchcock's Family Plot, which I saw at the cinema when I was ten or so. Great to hear he's still working.

*rescreening* S7 now because i don't remember anything about the new season bad guy and his connection to the failed hit on Money Chandler. Streaming/binging habits are bad for short term memories. Also, William Devane post-Kennedy career to me is his turn on 24 as Sec of Defense/POTUS/Dementia patient, 24 is also the last series i went this deep into late seasons. hmmmmmm.....

I'm reading Connelly's second Jack McEvoy novel The Scarecrow (2009) right now. The first was The Poet (1996), one of Connelly's most memorable books. He has said he doesn't love delving into McEvoy because "he is easily the most autobiographical character I have ever written about"

Dan S, Tuesday, 10 May 2022 00:01 (three years ago)

McEvoy is an investigative journalist and also appears in the Bosch/McCaleb novel A Darkness More Than Night (2001) and along with Bosch in the Mickey Haller novel The Brass Verdict (2008). Connelly also wrote a third novel featuring him in Fair Warning (2020), which I haven't read yet

lol finished rewatching s7 and i still don't really understand the underpinning of the new season plot but i'll just assume it's a The Big Sleep thing here it's best not to try to make the puzzle make sense and just enjoy the ride

buzza, Tuesday, 10 May 2022 09:24 (three years ago)

it does feel big-sleepy! needs more orchids in a hothouse to make bosch sweat uneasily

mark s, Tuesday, 10 May 2022 09:29 (three years ago)

i'd love more flirty scenes a la Dorothy Malone's bookstore clerk and the horny female cab driver but Bosch is way too leathery and stolid to pull that off. that's why i would love a Santiago spinoff with him and the punky bartender getting some real screentime.

buzza, Tuesday, 10 May 2022 09:36 (three years ago)

has there ever been a good or interesting take on the russian gangster as the new mafia concept ?

(this version is bad and boring) (og law and order had some entertaining characters now and then i guess in the 00s, this doesn't have that either)

mark s, Friday, 13 May 2022 17:55 (three years ago)

the procedural drama in the o/g series was hardly sparkling or boldly original but legacy REALLY misses it: hours of the newly minted PI and his high-end lawyer foe-chum tippytoeing round warehouses and whatnot to catch the crims at it is NO SUBSTITUTE AT ALL

also where is maddy this ep, i dont even love her sections but

mark s, Sunday, 15 May 2022 14:05 (three years ago)

Watched the first episode and it definitely feels like a cheap knockoff of the original. Don't give a fuck about Maddie's police training; there's already a whole procedural about that on network tv — it's called The Rookie and it's dull as shit, too. Bosch without a badge is just an old crank, and honestly I don't think the show has the budget to actually film his house sliding down the hill by season's end so I suspect that's just a distraction. Willam Devane in his wheelchair looks kind of amazingly like John McCain.

but also fuck you (unperson), Sunday, 15 May 2022 14:12 (three years ago)

lol baby bosch is in this flashback ep and he's a belligerent prick

(good casting tho tbh)

mark s, Friday, 20 May 2022 17:32 (three years ago)

show frantic to have it both ways re bad-apple cops and not in a deft or an interesting way really

mark s, Friday, 20 May 2022 17:42 (three years ago)

So if enjoyed Bosch non-legacy version but don't really care about the Bosch extended universe, should I put legacy in my viewing queue? most comments ITT are on the negative side...

that's not my post, Friday, 20 May 2022 19:48 (three years ago)

not really feeling it adds anything tbh

i will watch the series out probably bcz who wants to be left hanging but

mark s, Friday, 20 May 2022 20:01 (three years ago)

its bad and the theme song is bad

adam, Saturday, 21 May 2022 00:02 (three years ago)

ima still watch it tho

adam, Saturday, 21 May 2022 00:02 (three years ago)

TY. Think I’ll spend my limited TV time elsewhere and enjoy the memories from the original series.

that's not my post, Saturday, 21 May 2022 00:54 (three years ago)

watching bosch: legacy sandwiched between la reina del sur s2 and better call saul (with ulvede on the news) is not doing bosch: legacy any favours at all

mark s, Friday, 27 May 2022 20:18 (three years ago)

i mean uvalde

mark s, Friday, 27 May 2022 21:07 (three years ago)

wow waterboarder war criminal bosch flashback was unexpected, so many bad decisions in this show

adam, Saturday, 28 May 2022 01:42 (three years ago)

Haven't watched the streaming show yet, but I've been listening to the books in order and have gotten up to the 17th Harry Bosch novel, The Burning Room.

It is the first one read by Titus Welliver. I don't know how he is as an actor, maybe ok, but as a narrator he is an incredible bore. It really puts a damper on the whole series

Dan S, Saturday, 28 May 2022 02:48 (three years ago)

I want to like the remaining 7 novels. It's a reminder to me how important the narrator is with audiobooks

Dan S, Saturday, 28 May 2022 02:58 (three years ago)

xpost I really liked Welliver as Bosch in the TV series.

that's not my post, Saturday, 28 May 2022 03:25 (three years ago)

he's very watchable but it's kind of a recessive minimalism with the other more expressive characters as foils: i can easily see it getting tiresome when he does everyone else and the narration

mark s, Sunday, 29 May 2022 17:29 (three years ago)

Bosch going full on Jack Bauer (sort of) out of nowhere not a great shift for the series

buzza, Sunday, 29 May 2022 17:45 (three years ago)

yeah this series is dumb and bad

mark s, Sunday, 29 May 2022 17:46 (three years ago)

did we already know he was a vet? i dont remember anything abt it on the show (i haven't read the books)

mark s, Sunday, 29 May 2022 17:48 (three years ago)

yeah that’s why I qualified slightly
They did reference his special forces background in Iraq and Afghanistan (how he took out the S3 baddie and how he was a credible vet junkie in S6) but still …..

buzza, Sunday, 29 May 2022 17:51 (three years ago)

Sad to hear this isn’t good. Not even sure I’m gonna give it a shot. Might just leave things be and enjoy my mems of the og series.

Spottie, Sunday, 29 May 2022 17:53 (three years ago)

I think the loss of the great supporting cast is what hurts it the most + really can’t stand that phoney “jazz cat” Mo (urgh)

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 29 May 2022 18:02 (three years ago)

In the earlier iteration of the show I’d hope the goes Bauer scene would be a set-up for reflecting on what his time in special ops did for his sense of why he became a cop, why being a PI is a better fit for his moral crusade, but that bit about red tape or whatever and Maddie pondering what it means to be a “good cop” in just about every scene, in parallel with Chandler basically being cool with having a guy murdered despite having some bad dreams…sigh

KPH, Sunday, 29 May 2022 18:04 (three years ago)

His military background is all over the original series.

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 29 May 2022 18:07 (three years ago)

lol is it? lucky for me there isn't a test i guess

mark s, Sunday, 29 May 2022 18:10 (three years ago)

the dumbest thing for me in this season is how utterly pointless and perfunctory the J Edgar cameo is. The Crate and Barrel scenes at least had a tiny bit of the old flair.

buzza, Sunday, 29 May 2022 18:17 (three years ago)

Watched the first one last night, it's hard to pin down exactly what's wrong - everything's just a bit off. When Bosch is talking to the coroner buddy, his manner is wrong and there's this real ugly shot and reverse at the end. Bosch was always AMC basic cable but this is more USA Network.

Maddie is... not a good actor?

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 29 May 2022 19:23 (three years ago)

She should have gone to law school and the show picks up with her just passing the bar and working as a lawyer under Mimi Rogers, that's more believable than cop.

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 29 May 2022 19:25 (three years ago)

Early USA Network at that

Yeah she basically has a few modes and they are not suited to expressing very much (although I guess I’m holding out hope that her main mode, the indignant one, will strengthen her arc as it currently just feels like an awkward fit which could be fun to explore)

KPH, Sunday, 29 May 2022 20:22 (three years ago)

many xps

the very first Bosch book, Black Echo (1992), was about his flashbacks from his days as an infantryman in Viet Nam clearing enemy tunnel complexes

Dan S, Monday, 30 May 2022 00:56 (three years ago)

Dan S, yeah, the time shift from the novels to the tv show (and the desire to have Bosch be more virile, as opposed to elderly) made him a post-9/11 soldier in the middle east ... as opposed to a Vietnam vet, in a less elite unit and ... actually, I forget whether he enlisted or was drafted? The switch in military background (from Nam to Bush 2 Crusade) was something that always was a little cringeworthy for me in the series, (along with Maddie's acting, and the amount of screentime she was given) even though, more than most book-to-TV series, the original Bosch was really faithful and a good adaptation of the books.

sarahell, Monday, 30 May 2022 17:19 (three years ago)

Bosch’s hepcat helper is pretty rough going.

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 31 May 2022 03:11 (three years ago)

I keep pretending he's the Nightlife character from the Achewood comics

mh, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 16:17 (three years ago)

it's very unkind to suggest that he's fedora guy but he kind of is fedora guy

mark s, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 16:38 (three years ago)

I like his rookie partner, Lucia Soto, who first appears in The Burning Room

Dan S, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 23:42 (three years ago)

I keep pretending he's the Nightlife character from the Achewood comics

I don't know anything about Achewood but holy shit that is spot on.

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 31 May 2022 23:44 (three years ago)

Bosch and Nightlife trading jazz names is even more awkward than Crate and Barrel starting to Remember Some Movies And Movie Guys around season 4.

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 31 May 2022 23:45 (three years ago)

Art Pepper, man…

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 1 June 2022 06:21 (three years ago)

Titus Welliver's narration of The Burning Room has put me to sleep more than once over the last week and a half, but I finally finished it and am warming to him slightly as a narrator

Dan S, Friday, 3 June 2022 02:38 (three years ago)

It's nice to see Bosch, Honey, even Maddie again... but yeah, this season felt really off. They had like six different storylines that would usually be given to six different characters but with the tiny cast, the mains each got 2 or 3 different stories. very weird to have what seemed like the A-story (Bratva) abruptly wrap up mid-season. the Bosch vs. the assassin stuff was terrible, so out-of-place for this show. theme song and incidental music were also noticeably bad

I don't think the show has the budget to actually film his house sliding down the hill

No, but they tried their best with that terrible oil plant explosion shot

Vinnie, Saturday, 4 June 2022 15:01 (three years ago)

maybe I'm picking on it too much though. I would watch another season, it had enough Bosch essence for me

Vinnie, Saturday, 4 June 2022 15:05 (three years ago)

any one else watch the Lincoln Lawyer series?

sarahell, Saturday, 4 June 2022 20:54 (three years ago)

Yeah, I watched it. It was supposed to be a network show orginally, I think, and it definitely had that feel. But it wasn't terrible.

but also fuck you (unperson), Saturday, 4 June 2022 22:57 (three years ago)

seven months pass...

Have watched 7 seasons of the OG show over the last few months and had a total blast. Agree that S7 was rushed and a bit of a mess but enjoyed a snarling Bosch handing over his badge at the end. Like a few others have said, I desperately wanted to see more of Bosch (and Captain Reddick) in action but the overriding tone of interactions in the whole show is suppressed rage so it figures.

Things:
- like mark s, I frequently found myself saying 'but he doesn't ever *listen* to Coltrane!
- did Bosch ever sleep in a bed in the whole show?
- I have been learning to move like Jimmy Santiago and
- if there's a spin-off, I'd watch Jimmy just sitting on a bar stool
- where does Edgar by his shirts?

Normally a new season of Bosch was timed well enough to come out when I was dissatisfied with much of what I've been watching. Not sure if I trust season 2 of Legacy.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 20 October 2023 11:47 (one year ago)

three weeks pass...

The Bosch Legacy theme song is even worse than the plot of the first two episodes of Season 2.

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 10 November 2023 06:00 (one year ago)

I'm really put off by the continual Maddie-in-danger plots. Straight-up women in refrigerators shit.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 10 November 2023 08:47 (one year ago)

Actually thought this new season was not bad. Maddie-in-danger story wraps up fast and most of the season is a separate story with some surprises. Theme music is still awful, no fixing that

Vinnie, Wednesday, 22 November 2023 02:42 (one year ago)

hark... tis the sound of a new song singin... decent first ep tho
