Was in Ashland, OR last week, which is about two hours north, and the smoke was so bad is was classified as "hazardous." Lots of people wearing masks, or at least staying indoors. Related, we were in Santa Rosa, too, which was hit super hard last year, but aside form a few "thank you" monuments to firefighters I never would have guessed.

CalFire's general policy is to greatly favor protecting residential areas over parks so I wouldn't be surprised if they're already doing controlled burns around UC Santa Cruz.

Okay this 2019 story is too long but it's good. https://story.californiasunday.com/gone-paradise-fire
Cities founded in the fire-prone frontier by anti-government types that didn't want to be told how to build (proper infrastructure, firebreaks etc.)
Real estate has been the main wealth generator for a while, "Selling out to a developer was the only retirement plan most farmers knew."
"What was once sparse is now densely packed with pine, fir, cedar, and manzanita. A forest that supported 64 trees an acre in pre-settlement times now boasted 160 trees an acre ... 'I don't think we could have managed the forests any worse.'"
"as Wilson and his staff studied the fires more closely, he could see that their oddly linear pattern of ignition clusters corresponded to major electrical power lines."
Forestry management and fire prevention - prescribed burns, reducing fuel load - curtailed in favor of military-style firefighting.
"To justify its high costs, [Cal Fire] had to figure out a way to make itself essential throughout the year. This was how it evolved into a 24/7 provider of emergency services to the sprawling mountain communities ... instead of trying to slow down the suburbanization of forestlands, Wilson said, the department served the growth — to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars a year in funding."
PG&E and a Public Utilities Commission that's not equipped or inclined to regulate it

According to a press conference with the Oregon governor and top officials, they barely have the resources to manage orderly evacuations and try to keep people's houses from burning down (if that). Several hundred thousand people are under some level of Evacuation Alert and many thousands have already been given Level 3 notices and been directed to evacuation checkpoints. More than one small town has been largely destroyed along a 50 MILE LONG fire zone along highway 22.
My entire county (third most populated in Oregon) is under Level 1, 2, or 3. We're at level 1 and probably (?) ok. But it's anxious.

My old place of work in the Southern Humboldt hills (iykwim) evacuated today. Some of the most beautiful country I've ever had the pleasure of living and working in. I really hope the place gets spared.
― healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Thursday, 10 September 2020 01:50 (four years ago)
My daughter's group home is currently in Level 2 and in the process of evacuating. As luck would have it, there is an empty group home they will be able to move into, outside the evacuation zone. It was all prepared to get up and running as a new group home when the covid-19 lockdown started and all new admissions and transfers were cancelled until further notice.
My stomach is churning, in spite of knowing she will be safe. My emotions don't know it even though my intellect is pretty certain.
― the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Thursday, 10 September 2020 20:44 (four years ago)
btw, our home is still in a level 1 zone. Yesterday we identified some possible friends and family who'd take us in if necessary. The 'natural' winds have died down quite a bit, but big fires can create their own winds.

today in Oregon:
Big takeaways from Oregon Governor Kate Brown's presser:- Salem-area fires are expected to merge.- evacs in Portland metro is possible as early as Sunday- decent # of ppl fighting fires are students- we need MIN 2x the ppl power- have requested aid from DoD- WH hasn’t returned the Governor's call-Fires in Clackamas county merged, and Portland is “on alert”- Oregon Convention Center is open for evacuees-ppl with RVs go to Portland International Airport-Senator Merkley has been calling WH “multiple times a day”-Rep. DeFazio says WH signed Emergency Order-10% of pop evacuated and may rise to 35% before it's over-Do not breathe air outdoors in Portland and Willamette Valley
In other words, things are looking great!

my place smells like smoke, AQI here is about 300. i've alluded elsewhere but never been too specific about it: a couple months back i survived and am obviously still dealing with a whole cascade of pulmonary embolisms -- the upper lobe of my right lung is a goner due to related infarction -- so my lungs are not in great shape to say the least.
when i got home from the hospital i remember saying aloud "hope the wildfires aren't bad this year! not sure i could handle that!" so yeah.

― sleeve, Saturday, 12 September 2020 00:56 (four years ago)
thanks guys! I think i'm fine. the only way for stuff to really get in outside of cracks here and there is the wall-mounted A/C and we wrapped both inside and outside in plastic and taped it to hell a few days ago. I think it's hard for things *not* to smell like smoke after a few days of this.
sleeve, thanks so much for the offer. I have a couple closer last ditch places I can go but I'm pretty intent on riding this out if it's only for a few more days. have not been going outside, obv, and have a very kind roomie who's been taking care of me and things for awhile now. one bummer is literally the day before the smoke settled in i had started going on tiny tiny walks outside for the first time in a couple months and now, well, gonna have to wait a bit
― Clay, Saturday, 12 September 2020 01:07 (four years ago)

To give an idea of how fast this developed, this is an official description from a government website called Inciweb (emphasis added by me):
The Beachie Creek Fire originated in the Opal Creek Wilderness approximately 2 miles south of Jawbone Flats and 6 miles north of Detroit, Oregon. Prior to the historic windstorm that arrived in the area on Monday, September 7th, the Beachie Creek Fire was estimated to be 469 acres. The fire grew overnight to over 131,000 acres driven by high winds and extremely dry fuels.

yeah me too, it's a super cute place. sending good vibes to everyone affected. my local fire is about 75% contained and the ash has stopped falling but i'm still not ready to go for a jog because of the pervasive haze. i live on a main emergency road uphill from a big fire station, and pretty much backed up to a regional park which is just a series of canyons full of piles of overgrown dry brush, so every time the marshal goes by in his truck with sirens blazing i get real nervous.

― the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Saturday, 12 September 2020 18:24 (four years ago)
From what I understand most of the fires in Africa are in the savannas and are important aspects of their ecosystems. But yeah, the steady deforestation of the Amazon is a major global threat and only likely to accelerate as long as Bolsonaro turns a blind eye to land-grabbing arsonists.

OregonLive: The desperate fight to save his family ends in tragedy
Back in the Jeep, struggling to navigate a road once so familiar but now shrouded by smoke-filled darkness, Chris almost ran over what looked like a bikini-clad woman on the road. Once he was closer, he realized she was wearing underwear. Her hair was singed, her mouth looked almost black, and her bare feet were severely burned. He impatiently tried to help her into his car, explaining how he needed to find his wife and son, feeling like she was resisting. Finally, she spoke. “I am your wife.”

Finally, she spoke. “I am your wife.”
xp: the VIIRS global fire maps can be a bit misleading. The satellites are sensitive enough to pick up controlled fires of field waste (crop stems etc) used to return minerals to the soil and aid pest control, as well as controlled trash fires. Only a minority of the dots are deforestation by fire.

There's also some weird nutty lib types who seem to not understand "why they're burning the forests!" or whatever. I remember having to essentially yell at a person I knew, well-educated and good-natured, who couldn't understand why groves of eucalyptus were being shorn down in the Berkeley hills. Eventually I gave up, she got really into alternative medicine and yoga, and now seems to travel the world (despite pandemic) to exotic locations to practice her art or whatever. Or at least that was what she was doing when I unfollowed and unfriended her because her existence annoys me so much.

The history of eucalyptus trees in CA is pretty nutsI
By the early 1900s, the get-rich mindset had caused many aspiring forest tycoons to plant countless acres of eucalyptus in hopes of selling the timber for a tidy profit. It’s estimated that there were over 100 companies involved in the eucalyptus industry at this time, and they changed the landscape of much of California. But investors were soon to discover that the eucalyptus weren’t all they’d hoped them to be.Sadly, most of these schemes went the way they infamously did for Frank C. Havens. Havens was an Oakland developer who opened a mill and planted eight million eucalyptus trees in a 14-mile-long strip from Berkeley through Oakland. But when he came to sell the timber, it was found that the trees were too young to make suitable wood; the young wood had an irregular grain and it bent, cracked, and shrank when dried. It is true that eucalyptus trees from Australia could make good timber, but those trees were decades or sometimes centuries old. It was soon found that eucalyptus trees would need to be at least 75 or 100 years old for good lumber. The young wood didn’t even make useable fence posts or railroad track ties, both of which decayed rapidly. Havens closed shop.

Yeah, I remember reading about the same a while ago because of arguments that I'd get into with pro-eucalyptus people. I admit, I think they smell and look lovely, but dammit, they don't belong!

I hate the way they look, at least in contrast to the native species. Every time I'm up in one of the regional east bay parks, I can't help commenting about how dreary and washed-out they look. And the stuff they drop makes for treacherous footing.

I grew up in Oxnard (mostly) where they'd been planted as windbreaks for the farms (the blue gum variety, I think). Went to college in Santa Barbara, where they'd planted a bunch of the lemon-scented ones everywhere, so I still associate those scents with my youth. I like them but recognize they don't belong here.

They're closing Coconino and Kaibab national forests totally, until we get enough rain. Which is good overall but sucks for me since that covers most of the high country trails I go to on weekends to escape the heat. There's been some precipitation (I got rained on my last 2 hikes, tho both storms were limited to small areas up in the mountains) so fingers crossed that monsoon actually happens this year (it's been a "nonsoon" the past 2 summers).
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 17:38 (three years ago)
Storms in a big chunk of the southwest today. I haven't heard any thunder so hopefully there's no lightning-caused fires from them. Usually this is the driest time of year, until monsoon comes in early July. I've seen more clouds so far this year than the past 2 years combined. I can see 2 smoke plumes from my back patio and another one from my front porch. The one to the north was HUGE yesterday but much diminished today.

The local, bankrupt utility company (Pacific Gas & Electric, or PG&E) is poised to cut down some big canary palm trees in front of my building, and it really bums me out. The city of Oakland won't step in as they don't consider palms to be appropriate street trees.
Yes, the trees are growing up towards the power lines, but why don't they just dig a trench and bury the lines? Grrrr, I've been dreading this for a long time but it seems like the fight is lost.
For some backstory, PG&E has been under fire for poor tree maintenance that most likely helped start some of the recent horrible fires.. but these are green, healthy city trees, and lovely ones at that. Maybe if they weren't so goddamn cheap they would start burying high voltage lines and save themselves future misery and litigation.
(Sorry for the rant, I feel slightly better.)

The city of Oakland won't step in as they don't consider palms to be appropriate street trees.
it would take them a lot longer to do that than to remove the tree because it requires permits and the permitting process, which already is absurdly long, has gotten even worse since Covid. There's also the fact that the trees themselves could be fire hazards tbh ... it depends on the location. There are different zones with different levels of hazard and abatement enforcement.

it's real bad folks, but no one's talking about it unless the smoke affects them, because the biggies are in fairly remote parts of the sierra nevada, and i guess gawking at all the 'climate change bad' signs of the apocalypse is starting to wear out its welcome in the media, especially because it's bad and keeps on being bad and nothing ever changes.
anyway, just registering that slc as an aqi of 171 at the moment, because a cold front means we're in a direct line of flow right over the great basin.
it's sort of become a pastime of mine to read the comments on facebook from local yokels when the weather service shares smoke forecasts and such. so far i've seen a comment from rhonda of fillmore utah saying something like "this is just so bad and affects so many people. is there anywhere that isn't smokey" and yolanda of west jordan saying something like "another bad thing from california" (utahns LOVE to blame california for EVERYTHING that is wrong in the world, including but not limited to rising prices, moral decrepitude, and government red tape).

Robertson said the property he booked through VRBO, a short-term rental booking site, refused to give him a refund for his $4,000 stay, even as neighboring counties began evacuating and the Air Quality Index spiked into the 400s — an incredibly unhealthy range...
VRBO said it recommends travelers "consider buying travel insurance that provides the right coverage for their needs to help protect their vacation plans."

Yeah, FW2020 was rough. 5 of the 10 worst wildfires in the history of California (and Oregon wasn't much better).
Not only were we in COVID lockdown but also choking on dense wildfire smoke for close to 3 months. Even our indoor AQI readings were in the triple digits. Those of us with kids dealing with at-home everything and then no more going outside for fresh air made things extremely unmanageable.

I have lived in SF for most of my life, and September 9th, 2020, dubbed "orange skies day", will always be a day I remember, it was a very dim orange twilight all day and even the birds didn't know how to respond, it was freaky. Steve Shasta's photo captures it

― Dan S, Thursday, 8 June 2023 01:00 (one year ago)
Yeah, that day was incredibly eerie but it was nowhere near one of the worst air quality days that year. Iirc, the orange skies were a result of a cloud layer creating a buffer between the city and most of the particulate.

When the authorities closed down long sections of I-84 in eastern Oregon last week due to a megafire, I knew this fire season was going to be another bad one. I'm leaving for a 9-day camping/backpacking trip in southern Oregon tomorrow and I'm hoping I won't get any new fires or heavy smoke near me. If so, it will be a piece of luck, because there's a ton of fires and heavy smoke just about 40 miles NNW of where I'll be.

― Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 29 July 2024 03:09 (nine months ago)
I wanted to go backpacking or camping last week. I snagged a limited-quota hiking permit for a popular wilderness in Central Oregon, but at the last minute I switched over to a car campground about 40 miles SE of there because the revised forecast called for lightning storms in the area where I was supposed to backpack. I recently endured a very prolonged and violent series of lightning storms while backpacking in the Cascades and had to bail out early. That was an experience I wasn't eager to repeat, especially with about 25 wildfires already burning throughout Oregon.
So, I car camped and day hiked for several days in Newberry Volcanic National Monument having a fine time (except for some clueless neighboring campers). There was a thunderstorm Friday evening, but it seemed mild and innocuous compared the maelstrom I'd recently endured. On Saturday I was up at 7500 ft on the rim of a caldera, eating lunch and enjoying the quiet when I noticed the air was getting very smoky. That was disquieting. After lunch I was able to get a more panoramic look at the sky. There was a general smoke haze everywhere, but the smoke seemed much denser to my south and I thought I could make out the faintest hint of orange at the horizon line in that direction. That was faintly alarming.
As I hiked down I started making contingency plans in case there was a fire close by and I got an evacuation order. Like the infamous Paradise, CA fire, the only way out was one road that wound down 2500 ft before it reached a highway. When I got to my campsite the smoke was nasty. I slept uneasily that night and resolved to leave in the morning. When I got home later on Sunday I discovered that a Level 1 Evacuation notice had been issued for the place where I'd been camping about 40 minutes after I left.
Incidentally, the place where I chose not to go backpacking had 8 new fires within about 15 miles of where I'd have been. Fun times we're living in.

I hear you re: the hubris of building homes, towns, ski resorts, etc in dry mountain forest areas. I suppose most of our interactions with nature involve some hubris that could be randomly punished. I have a friend in Forest Services that seems to believe the situation could be improved with more budget (e.g. for prescribed burns). I guess there could be air quality concerns far away from the homes and ski resorts, and these will get worse as wildfire frequency and intensity increase from climate change. So there may be an argument for improving the situation that isn't so strongly tied to at-risk human-built structures.
― 145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 12 September 2024 22:31 (eight months ago)
that's not really the hubris i'm talking about. more the attitude that we can contain the burn. or like innovate our way through it. i'm familiar with the mitigating effects of controlled burns but i doubt increasing them is going to make a significant difference.

misread the map, it's not a huge area but mainly because the bit north of san Vicente that is inside the city of SM is tiny. presumably the bit over the border in LA already evacuated.
SM also issuing an evacuation *warning* for north of Montana. if that turns into an evacuation that's going to be wild.

― brony james (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 8 January 2025 14:44 (four months ago)
the evacuation zone in Pasadena / Altadenas is insane. blocks and blocks of dense suburbia. I guess on the bright side it's not like in the palisades where there's effectively one road in and out. but that's tens of thousands of homes.
― 𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 8 January 2025 15:03 (four months ago)
multiple people we know have evacuated. one family who was just on the outside of the initial evac zone in Altadena finally did evacuate, and they're unsure if their home survived. They're pretty far up north, close to the hills. The air quality is awful. lots of schools are closed, not ours. But we decided to keep the kid home anyway, almost out of principle, since considering the uncertain conditions all over the city and the fact that teachers are coming from all over including areas directly affected, it should have been a citywide closure imo.

When I was in Sonoma County during the Kincade Fire, there were privately contracted firefighters protecting some areas, some hired by insurers. Guardian story about them here.
I'm sure that happened much more after the Tubbs Fire wiped out an entire neighborhood in Santa Rosa. And I'm sure we'll see much more of that in L.A. going forward.

This data table was particularly enlightening:
https://www.laalmanac.com/weather/we13a.php
Historical rainfall in LA for July-December averages: 3.99 inchesRainfall totals in LA for July-December 2024 was: 0.16 inches
The drought has caused the canyons and foothills to dry up like tinderboxes then add some freakish unseasonal January Santa Anas to that mix and you get this current infernal maelstrom.
I looked at some long range forecasts to see if and when it will ever rain again in the Los Angeles area and in 3.5 weeks there was one single day with a 50% chance of 0.05 inches of rain.

From a friend who went through the Tubbs fire in Santa Rosa some years back and lost her house then. People here who know people who have similar losses now might want to pass this on (Jessica was the author of another advice post she was responding to):
As a Tubbs Fire survivor who went through the rebuild process I have to add this:1. When you save receipts write down in the back exactly what it was for.2. Start a diary of every single interaction with the insurance company. We were handed off to 5 different agents and told many things. We got a small check and then couldn’t get anything for another 3 months. Write down names, email, phone numbers and WHO you spoke to and the nature of the conversation. Ask for them to email you a summary of what was said or agreed upon!3. Get divider tabs for your 3 ring notebook and have sections for utilities, insurance, personal belongings, rebuild process, etc. This was my “bible”. It went everywhere with complete documentation. You may normally be a person on top of things with a sharp memory but your entire world has been turned upside down.4. PTSD is real. Get ready.5. Don’t be stoic. Take advantage of friends willing to help whether it is to do your laundry, make a meal, give you a place to stay, or give you clothing. This runs out soon.6. Secure housing ASAP! This was a huge problem in our community. Some of the closest rentals ended up being 1.5 hours away by the time people got insurance checks to look for housing.7. Like Jessica said above. BREATHE…

An ex-GF lost her family home in the Tubbs Fire in Coffey Park in Santa Rosa... her dad never got over it. He took to a chair and sat there for a year or so and then died, it was pretty sad (they'd bought the house in early 80s I think)
― Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 9 January 2025 20:41 (four months ago)
Yeah my friend's house in Altadena had this fantastic backyard with a giant treehouse, a chicken coup, turtles, and some outbuildings. And some wooden kayaks they had built. All gone. But they're OK at least.

Really sitting with the emotional & psychological damage that it does to people to lose a home. I've seen more coverage of the perspective of people who get insurance money and rebuild and talk about how it's hard but worth it; thanks for the sobering reminder that the loss is a trauma that not everyone recovers from. I'm so sorry for the person Andy knows and for your dad, carne asada, for having had to endure it.
My parents experienced the near-total destruction of a place they lived, insurance paid back little, the people who destroyed it had to be sued, and my folks never really got the value of what they had lost so they re-built it by themselves over months of back-breaking labor at an age when they should not have been doing that. I'm so grateful for their ability to brace up under the shock and face the size of the task, and still find joy and peace and appreciation for what they have. (It wasn't our family home though it was a significant asset and a huge loss.)

- there's going to be huge competition for contractors to rebuild- there's going to be huge competition for rental housing locally in Altadena and PP- the absolute number of homes destroyed is a significant fraction of the number of homes LA county builds in a year so it's going to have a regional effect- price-gouging laws are supposed to prevent rent increases after disasters but they don't get enforced

― Ima Gardener (in orbit), Friday, 10 January 2025 17:34 (four months ago)
Yeah. I do sort of think a huge way to fix our problems is to get people out of their communities and engaging with other folks. The military does actually sort of accomplish that to some degree, and some sort of service requirement could too.

It’s hard to blame anyone for what has happened, you can’t fight those winds we had the other night, I think anyone who was not in the city as it was happening probably doesn’t quite understand just how intense a night that was even before the fires really got going. We had gusts in the high 90s where we are. I don’t doubt there were some problems going on and I’ve never really had intense feelings of enthusiasm for any major city mayor. I’ve ever been a constituent under, but it’s hard to know what could’ve been done to stop this especially since they couldn’t even get air support due to conditions.
― omar little, Saturday, 11 January 2025 03:15 (four months ago)
True, the fire chief went on TV and complained about the 18 million budget cut. She seems to be focusing on mechanics and broken equipment. She also said not much you can do about the winds, but the response part is an interesting piece.

Hey everyone - haven't been on here in a minute, but figured I'd check to see how everyone is doing.
We live in Altadena. We were evacuated Tuesday, but I've been able to return to our home (spared, thankfully) a few times since. It is less than a mile from where the Eaton fire started.
I was able to drive through the worst hit parts, checking on my friends homes - all gone. The level of destruction was beyond my imagination. Rows of charred chimneys.
When I went back yesterday, there were National Guard, LA County ad CHP patrolling, keeping everyone out of the burned out areas. Right next to them, were food trucks and restaurants, giving away free food to anyone. Pallets of water being handed out. Hugs between neighbors.
I hope everyone on here is okay. We are from it at this moment, but we'll get back there.

― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 11 January 2025 14:51 (four months ago)
My daughter looked out the window in the direction of Eaton Canyon, and said "Why does the sky look like that?" <10 minutes later, we were on the road to our family's place south of LA.
We are so incredibly lucky. Seeing the northwest parts of town (essentially, bordered by Lake to the east, the mountains to the north, Lincoln to the west, and Woodbury to the south) that were there 12 hours earlier while fire crews were still putting fires out still hasn't sunk in.
The bar down the street from us was open last night, as much for a place for community to gather than to sling drinks. The owner lost her home, but was there for the neighborhood. She was barely holding it together, and she's one of the tougher people I know.
There were no visible flames as of 6:30 last night, and the Mt. Wilson Observatory was still there, lights on.
I have no coherent narrative to share. Just checking in over here.

Yeah, I definitely reported that one. I feel like anyone living in LA, if they see a place for rent that is suspiciously expensive, they should check the price history and see if the price was raised massively in the last several days and report it if so

I just saw this today, a pieced together ring camera/phone camera depiction of a couple escaping the fire in Altadena. It shows the initial fire starting up as far as I can tell, and this shows you just how fast it went, and what those who escaped had to deal with. And why some could not escape.

Right now the Eaton Fire is 27% contained, the Palisades Fire is 11% contained. Unless I’m mistaken the other big fires this week have been gotten under control. But as nickn noted we’re supposed to get more big winds this week so who knows what tomorrow will bring.

yeah it does seem like the past 24 hours have seen some good firefighting. they just downgraded northeast brentwood, where the getty museum is, from an order to a warning. and I’m back at my apartment temporarily getting ready for work tonight and can’t even see the smoke from our rooftop any more

the crazy thing about that escape video i posted is that not only was their home spared, but it seems like based upon where they were located (approx the blue circle), their entire immediate neighborhood (Midlothian) was spared. the darker red areas were all burned. the two families we know both lived in the area where you see Mountlowe. that's almost all of Altadena.

We are south and west of that circle by like two blocks. No power, gas or potable water, but the house is still there.
Glad your friends place is alright. We know a lot of folks in the Mountlowe area whose homes are just gone.
― TrumpPence a Bag (B.L.A.M.), Tuesday, 14 January 2025 14:17 (four months ago)
Sorry, I think I was a bit murky in my posting there, unfortunately, both families we know in Mountlowe lost their houses and everything in them.
The city has returned to some sense of eerie normalcy, which feels particularly surreal. Where I’m sitting right now I’m looking at the hill the Palisades fire had been creeping over and knowing what’s on the other side…
I think one aspect to this is a lot of people are going to leave the city for good. And Altadena was an area where I know so many friends, or friends of friends, who moved there because they were priced out of some of the east side communities that were suddenly desirable 10 to 15 years ago. it was the home of a lot of members of the local creative community, not just Hollywood but a bunch of musicians and artists. But Hollywood too. I really don’t know what many of them are going to do next, some of them just simply aren’t in a position to be able to get another home. and knowing that Los Angeles is a city where your happiness might be dependent upon your immediate community, since it’s such a spread out city and your friends live in another area code you're rarely going to see, I can tell you that it’s really heartbreaking to know that basically you have these two entire communities that don’t exist anymore and you won’t be able to re-create. all of these beautiful old homes are gone, and you’ll never have your neighbors back again, and all the new construction will be some boxy bullshit or new farmhouse style monstrosities. The charm is gonna be gone. And you know not to mention the toxicity of the areas that burned up, I really don’t know enough about that sort of thing to determine how long it would take for someone to be able to live in those areas, but it seems like it might be awhile.
I’m also on a text chain with a bunch of other friends who are working in Hollywood, and they are all sort of over it here at this point. This feels like the nail in the coffin for them, based on what they’re saying. And they weren’t in areas that were hit directly, I think it’s just a sense of exhaustion with the cost of living, the fact that the industry locally had already been in a downturn post-pandemic, and what the climate future of Los Angeles will be, and the knowledge that where many of them live are areas that could suffer the same fate if the conditions are right for it. I mean, this could have happened in areas of Los Feliz or Silver Lake, the foothills of Tarzana, the Valley side of Topanga Canyon, etc. and buying a house for an exorbitant amount of money, that might not be insured, a house that anywhere else in the country might be worth less than half or a third of what you pay here… that’s not necessarily going to appeal to people as much let’s say.
I’m really not sure what we’re going to do, personally. I think it’s quite likely that once we’re done with high school, we are out.
― omar little, Tuesday, 14 January 2025 16:27 (four months ago)
Yeah, I know some ppl in the affected areas whose houses are miraculously still standing but it’s possible the smoke damage and other conditions have rendered their houses uninhabitable

I work with a couple of people who live in ALD-MENDOCINO - one guy's house had a broken window but is otherwise OK, the other's house was completely destroyed. So far I know three people who lost everything: that guy, the owner of me & Ms. T's fave bakery, a photographer friend (and hardcore surfer) who had a cool tiny house in Malibu that she watched burn down from the UK. Ms. T's brother knows ten folks who all lost houses.Compounding on what omar said, there's a similar feeling in the Pasadena JPL CalTech aerospace startup community too - they're all "do we need to be here?"

We have a house inspection tomorrow to see what needs to be done for us to move back in - apart from gas and electric being turned back on, and the water being deemed potable for more than a few days.
I love LA. After more than a decade and a half, I'm at the point where I feel like I can move around most parts of the city with relative familiarity and comfort. It is more my home than anywhere else I've ever lived.
Altadena was always a funky foothill town with a great diverse group of people who just got along. Nights at the Rancho, the 1881, Farnsworth Park, taco stands on Washington, talking shit out front of the laundromat, everyone rocking new Dodgers hats twice within five years, quiet chilly Saturday mornings, knowing that any party you go to has at least five musicians five rocket scientists, and five tv/movie folks, and that could be a total of seven people, coyotes stopping in the middle of a crosswalk on a green light and everyone being like "Well, I guess we aren't making this light," blue street signs, Mission Wine & Spirits, July 4th fireworks on the municipal golf course, Everest Burgers...
I hope it comes back in some form of unincorporated LA, unplanned, organically grown community. The time we've lived there, Altadena has really felt like home.
I really home the inspection goes well and we can move back in soon. I'm ready to be back in my community.

so are the fires still consuming structures? Or just scrub land which is probably a good thing to have happen in January
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 17 January 2025 17:52 (four months ago)
i think it's pretty much scrub land at this point. but still ongoing -- i have a friend who lives a three miles south of Ventura Blvd and who texted this morning to say her subdivision was very "smoky" and people were on edge. it's much more controlled, no one is in immediate danger, and yet the reminders remain.
also i don't trust the AQI as a measurement of the air actually being safe to breathe, i'm wearing a mask if i'm outside for any extended period of time (which i'm choosing not to be for now...) it would be nice to get a bit of rain to finish all this off but we haven't had one of those since....march?
― omar little, Friday, 17 January 2025 18:30 (four months ago)

I had two TL-15 safes rated for 1 hour of fire. When I opened them 5 days after the burn one was still on fire inside. Everything that wasn't metal or diamond was ash, sapphire and amethyst had changed color from the temp. The metal is all blackened & some things are missing entirely or partly melted as well.
