Joe Pera Talks with You is the first new show I’ve really liked in at least a year.

― Chris L, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 01:15 (one month ago) Permalink

that show rules. it's somehow funny and gentle and comforting and weird all at the same time. very unlike the other adult swim shows

― na (NA), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 02:16 (one month ago) Permalink

It’s very funny and has a tremendous amount of heart and integrity. I guess it goes to show adult swim is still willing to do something radically different, other than give a show to any woman.

― Chris L, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 07:48 (one month ago) Permalink

OK I just finished it last night and was not expecting nor was I prepared for the turn in the last episode.

― Simon H., Monday, 25 June 2018 11:13 (one month ago) Permalink

I guess saying what major recent arthouse picture it reminded me of might constitute a spoiler so I'll just say I hope it gets picked up for another season.

― Simon H., Monday, 25 June 2018 11:23 (one month ago) Permalink

I like it a lot - it reminds me of my partner's hometown in western Ontario.

There's a weird tension to it, too - you expect every scene to end with some cheap gag to undercut the earnestness, but it never comes. Or if it does, the gag itself is just as earnest.

― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 25 June 2018 11:32 (one month ago) Permalink

Yes, the tone is very carefully managed, as is the writing/design of "Joe Pera," the character

― Simon H., Monday, 25 June 2018 11:45 (one month ago) Permalink

Yeah - I don't want to look at his other stuff on YouTube in case he's acting out of character and it spoils the effect.

devvvine, Thursday, 2 August 2018 10:51 (seven years ago)

Still no word on a second season?

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 2 August 2018 11:21 (seven years ago)

not that i can find, seems like it's got good enough press coverage to warrant it.

I am so grateful to you for flagging this show! I just watched the first episode, and was hooked instantly. It's insane how effective it is at making you care so much about a character inside 11 minutes!

i would avoid, a couple standup routines were on point but most of the old stuff was lame. he really honed this character through the years.

InfoWarriors (Spottie), Monday, 6 August 2018 20:58 (seven years ago)

i'm guessing church announcements will win, probably deservedly. i think any of them aside from the last couple are a good choice - i like those too but i prefer the self-contained ones to the plot-focused ones.

I had no idea this was a thing! I always try talking this dude up to people and always forget his name (to the extent that I scanned this thread title like seven times before I finally realized where I knew the name). He's just become 'that twentysomething guy who acts like he's in his late seventies' at this point. Will def check this out.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 23:38 (seven years ago)

And considering the licensing for a song like that would normally wipe out a show's entire season budget, I'm guessing that Townshend let it go for peanuts (as he did with Louis CK/"Who Are You" after he watched a clip).

This show was so lovely

Voting is very difficult but I think I will go with Breakfast, as its final line is the best final line of any episode in TV history

imago, Saturday, 8 September 2018 18:55 (six years ago)

Although the other O'Malley-written episode, Fall Drive, pushes it very close and actually I won't vote yet until I've seen them both again

imago, Saturday, 8 September 2018 18:56 (six years ago)

voted "shows you how to dance" but this is basically impossible

Clay, Saturday, 8 September 2018 20:44 (six years ago)

Leaning towards fall drive... but also leaning towards the other 8 episodes as well.

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Saturday, 8 September 2018 23:43 (six years ago)

I love the tension and release when he finally [spoiler lol] says what he wants for breakfast.

There are several legit beautiful moments in the fall drive episode - the photos, the decaying pumpkin, the waterfall...

I grew up in the upper peninsula during my teenage years and it is so unbelievably spot-on that there were moments when I was watching it with my wife where I would uncontrollably lose it and she thought something was wrong with me. he captured the entire vibe of living up there that it felt like I was being teleported back to those years.

I've been tearing through this the past few days, and was about to watch the last two, but Adult Swim's site is just giving me their weird 404 page now :(

Biggest laugh for me so far, was the cutaway to the deli slicer in the NYE episode. "NICE AND THICK." Something about that just short-circuited my brane. Biggest smile was when the band teacher starts beating the drum along to "Baba O'Riley."

I'm amazed by how much I care about Joe after only nine ten minute episodes. I think it's because he's so different from other main characters in that he's so uncomplicated and straightforward in the best possible way. It's refreshing to see characters who aren't dark or edgy or complex

ok it was always bothering me that this guy reminded me of **someone** and I finally figured out who it was

about 10 years ago there was this middle aged Southern guy named Steve Sutton who did a daily video blog even though he led a totally uneventful life and never really had anything to say. occasionally he would post little tutorials. a friend and I used to follow this guy religiously because there was something weirdly relaxing about watching him. it was like a daily moment of zen. anyway looking him up on YouTube again it looks like at least one of his videos got kind of famous

Then she liked it. She thought I was being mean by watching it and laughing!

I had to convince my husband of the same thing. He was really worried that it was some super-extreme comedy of embarrassment. But he relaxed when I assured him nothing bad would happen to Joe.

frogbs, Monday, 6 April 2020 15:01 (five years ago)

in that recent "showrunners write a corona episode" piece in vulture there was a joe pera piece

Mordy, Monday, 6 April 2020 15:42 (five years ago)

JOE and SARAH sit on their respective cots in Sarah’s fortified basement, each reading big books. Joe looks up, asks …

JOE: “Sarah, do you think they’re still gonna do Movie Night at the library next week?”

SARAH: “What?”

Joe removes from his mouth the cinnamon stick he’s been chewing on.

JOE: “Do you think that there’ll be Movie Night at the library next week?”

Sarah opens her mouth to respond but pauses. Of course, it’ll be canceled, but she knows how much Joe looks forward to the event each month and doesn’t want to give him the disappointing news.

Unfortunately, the pause lingers long enough for Joe to figure it out and he nods and returns to reading, disheartened.

Sarah sees the sad look on his face and begins to hum the tune of “Good Time Girl,” used in the opening credits of The New Pope, a television show that they have been watching this week — one episode each night before bed.

Joe doesn’t look up from his book but begins to move his shoulders up and down to the beat. Though he will never be able to dance like the attractive nuns at the beginning of each episode, Sarah and Joe imagine him doing so and smile.

They go back to their books. —Joe Pera

REVERIES + REVERIES GOING DEEPER
Q&A W/ FILMMAKERS MODERATED BY JOE PERA
January 27th 8pm
https://stream.spectacletheater.com/

Reveries, and it’s follow-up Reveries: Going Deeper, are comedy tone poems/visual albums revolving around two mysterious drifters who never speak, but whose inner monologues carry us across a landscape of absurdist one-liners, surreal stories, and stream-of-consciousness musings. Backed by a dreamy original score and hallucinogenic montages created from camcorder footage shot over the course of years all around the world, Reveries is a singular, unclassifiable experience at the intersection of alt comedy, internet video art, and underground weirdo cinema.

Reveries tracks the drifters as they travel across the American landscape in what reveals itself as a journey into their own unravelling minds and psyches. The more narrative-driven, Reveries: Going Deeper, takes place in a dystopian future where the drifters broadcast their “reveries” from an underground, pirate radio station, attempting to save the world by diving deeper into their own minds than they’ve ever been before.

Stick around after the screening for a Q&A with Director Director Graham Mason & Writer/Stars Anthony Oberbeck & Matt Barats moderated by Joe Pera of Joe Pera Talks With You"

^^ I saw that with the big disclaimers at the beginning, and I dunno. Still feels in character.

I mean, "Joe Pera" is a schoolteacher, so he has to have a college degree. And in the same way he thought it would be a good idea to recreate Rat Race, I could see an even younger "Joe Pera" doing that act.

pplains, Thursday, 20 January 2022 14:53 (three years ago)

ultimately I don't think Joe Pera and "Joe Pera" are all that different - no more than say Nathan Fielder in Nathan for You or some of Tim Heidecker's various characters...still it's weird to hear him doing a different voice

but I guess that is the appeal of the show, the characters feel three-dimensional and real. I like the fact that Pera isn't used as a punching bag the way most comedy shows would. the way his students & neighbors treat him feels very authentic to me. he's this boring dork but ultimately people like him even if they don't really want to get to know him

frogbs, Thursday, 20 January 2022 14:59 (three years ago)

so great that that exists.

im sure ive posted before that there are jokes i remember from seeing him at western ny open mics around this time that popped up in s1 of the show. its amazing how once he figured his character out he just stuck to it and ran with it. i still remember the feeling of seeing him at an open mic at some awful upstate bar and listening to all the macho badboy maron-wannabe standup dudes all roasting him amongst each other, "what is with this mr rogers guy, is he stupid?" etc, and i was like "this guy is obviously the funniest person in this room by a factor of 1000"

frogbs, Thursday, 20 January 2022 15:32 (three years ago)

There are quite a few less than flattering descriptors I can think of for Marc Maron but, uh, "macho" is not one of them.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 20 January 2022 15:35 (three years ago)

i guess i was using "macho" more in terms of that kind of comic-as-gunslinger, "traditional standup uber alles", anyone doing anything weird is "cheating" mindset that he used to be very hung up on (less so in recent years as he's softened, but certainly 10 years ago)

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Thursday, 20 January 2022 15:44 (three years ago)

Oh I get that descriptor, for sure, Pera is such a wonderful exception to that. Maron just spends so much time dwelling in and displaying his insecurities that it's hard to think of him the macho type.

So that new Jeffrey Dahmer series on Netflix. It’s a little uncanny.

There’s no regional connection between the two as far as I know and I’ve never seen interview footage of Dahmer, but it’s like they found a guy who looks like Joe Pera and told him to “do Joe Pera”. Or Pera’s thing was quietly “do Jeffrey Dahmer” the whole time.

If Netflix reads this — they don’t have to do another serial killer show. I have another idea. You know the women who used to appear in the Big Buck Hunter game? They’re all older now, and I’ve reached out to them, and I’ve got them signed on to do a film interpretation of Hamlet. If Netflix reads this, I hope they know that we could do it at a fraction of the price of Dahmer.

yeah that article is wrong on a number of levels: those weren't "stand-up shows," that was the two day screening of every episode of the show at Bell House. He had the UP teacher onstage with him at the start of S3, seemed like a nice guy.

That was a great experience btw, lots of shop talk and fun being in a crowd of Pera obsessives who clapped at every title card.

Saw him this past Friday. The music playing over the PA as people were getting seated included the MC5 and the New York Dolls. There were two openers, one of whom was Ryan Dunn who did the music for the show. He was really fun and engaging. The next opener was comedian, and longtime Pera collaborator, Dan Licata (he played the DJ in the "Baba O'Riley" episode) who was decidedly hacky and mediocre. Joe came on, and his entrance music was the Jam's "In The City," which was a pleasant surprise. Joe did a LOT of interacting with the audience, and it wasn't the usual crowd work type of stuff, either. He would ask the audience a question, and then asked people to respond "one at a time" -- which they did. Then he asked us to vote on, for instance, if a squirrel could carry an entire pita chip by itself. The ending of the show was like a slowly deflating balloon, though. I saw Tig Notaro do something similar, where there's a bit sort-of being worked up to, and the performer just kind of riffs hoping they'll hit upon something funny enough to end on. I dunno, maybe Joe was working out half-written material or something -- he brought Ryan and Dan (who was funnier in this bit than in his opening set) back out for the last 10 minutes or so. But overall, a solid and hilarious show. I had never heard Joe swear or talk about sex, so that was weirdly jarring.

I appreciate his enthusiasm. Learning about the ways the gases can be channelled through the house was educational for me.

I don't want to ruin the mood, but I do have an important point to make. The tile work there is less than aesthetically pleasing.

Perhaps Eric could make another video explaining the reasons why the tile was set like that. There may be a very good engineering or architectural reason, and – though my wife hates to hear it – that's sometimes more important than how something looks.

I hadn't realised he's coming to the UK in a few months! The Glasgow evening show is sold out already, but there's a Sunday afternoon matinee, which maybe feels even more appropriate.

brain (krakow), Saturday, 11 February 2023 14:41 (two years ago)

I see devvvine mentioned it just a few posts ago in December actually, but I totally missed it.

in a very random twist of fate i ended up showing him around my workplace while he was in the uk. was extremely lovely!

devvvine, Thursday, 6 July 2023 19:51 (two years ago)

The deep regret where you discover that a favourite/loved band just played nearby without you knowing? Crushing case of this when I saw too late that Joe Pera came to the UK. Managed to get a lovely embroidered t-shirt though.

This is a seven minute routine about a squirrel and a pita chip lmao I’m dying here

frogbs, Saturday, 7 October 2023 04:48 (one year ago)

The dating column was great to losing virginity section was awesome. Early section? Ehhhh he brings the audience in on the joke of the bit rather then leaning hard on it, though that lean is definitely essential to allow those moments to shine

H.P, Saturday, 7 October 2023 14:21 (one year ago)

Has his posture gotten more extreme lately? It's ironically not very relaxing and even menacing -- after 5 minutes, I had to switch to Pera's old "zero fucks" character video to calm down!

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 7 October 2023 14:54 (one year ago)

Surely he’s got something propping up his shirt from the back, otherwise the man needs to calm down for his health!

H.P, Sunday, 8 October 2023 07:44 (one year ago)

well how much calmer can this man get? can't imagine another comedian able to close on "if you haven't fallen asleep yet, I wish you good night"

anyway, I loved the whole thing, maybe some parts were awkward or didn't quite work but I also think he's doing something on stage which hasn't really been done before. btw he does break character around 47:50 :)

who was the guy at the top of the balcony they kept cutting to? was that his dad?

frogbs, Monday, 9 October 2023 14:30 (one year ago)

Pretty sure that was the doorman who bonked everyone on the head on the way in. And yeah, he totally broke when talking about his female fans freezing their partners to death. Adorable.

Loved this. A little shocking when he went blue for a few minutes there but the impact of the bit was earned by the years of well-maintained sedation.

Prop Dramedy (Old Lunch), Monday, 9 October 2023 14:36 (one year ago)

When I saw him live on this tour in DC he ended up talking to a woman in the crowd who worked in the White House and he made several asides about he was now worried about being targeted by Joe Biden.

Chris L, Monday, 9 October 2023 14:57 (one year ago)

I'll also point out that he put the special on YouTube ad-free, which is a really nice thing for him to do especially since it's getting a good amount of views!

frogbs, Monday, 9 October 2023 17:01 (one year ago)

i saw him in madison on the tour that turned into this special, looking forward to watching

lol at in the "fall drive" episode you see gene and his wife dressed up as neo and trinity from the matrix and joe and his grandmother dressed up as the albino twin villains

na (NA), Thursday, 7 November 2024 17:27 (nine months ago)

guessing that was a Conner O'Malley obsession since he once dressed up as one of the twins on Seth Meyers, too.

Dan Licata was on Office Hours a couple weeks ago and told a pretty funny story about when he met Joe Pera. he was 10 years old and met him at a laser tag place, everyone orders "The Lasertron Special" and child Joe Pera orders a ginger ale lmao

also confirms that the bulk of S1's budget went towards licensing Baba O'Reilly
