also there was some discussion on the second thoughts thread of Natalie being problematic in some way but I couldn't really follow it, so pls hash that out here if you are so inclined
I've heard good things abou hbomberguy but can't really bring myself to click on someone who uses formulations like "x is terrible and here's why", regardless of what the x is (well, maybe if it's capitalism).
hbomberguy is tight with the other two youtubers already mentioned so he tends to get lumped in as well, but my big problem with his videos is they're too damn long. if you care about the politics of gaming you could do a lot worse and he is quite funny and charming at times, but he could really take a page from Contra when it comes to concision
For anyone who's curious about Lindsay Ellis, her three-parter on the Hobbit films is a bit of a form-buster when it comes to YouTube video essays, particularly for the way it blossoms from an essay into an actual documentary partway through

Stevem does pretty good videos about Japanese music (from Jazz to City Pop to Japanese Hip-Hop) and the more respectable end of anime (Miyazaki etc.)
Vinilteca is good if you want to get a grasp on the Brazilian music canon but it's in Portuguese.
Strictly Dumpling is my guilty pleasure food go-to. It's pretty vapid, dude doesn't have a ton of charisma and the music's terrible BUT he does seem to know his shit and has a stomach of steal, so seeing him eat prodigious amounts of grub throughout South East Asia is pretty entertaining. I'm sure accounts like that are a dime a dozen but this one's at least well edited and doesn't have too many calls to action.
― Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 15:23 (five years ago) link
incidentally, since you mentioned calls to action, if anyone doesn't know what that means, the most recent Lindsay Ellis video is a meta meditation on the youtuber business model that gets into all this stuff and it's a good overview of the madnesses inherent to the platform

― resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 2 January 2019 17:45 (five years ago) link
todd in the shadows does lurk here or at least has before. one of his videos directly cited an ilm thread in the description (a compilation of songs that actually stop when the singer says stop, like the ilm thread on the same subject).
found the parasocial relationship video basically unwatchable. it was heavily rt'd by that whole circle of #content creators (a comically large proportion of ppl on that list are friends and frequent collaborators -- the fellow who wrote the list might as well have had it served up to him by algorithmically generated recommendations) so i tried to watch it around the time it came out. her intro video on the subject was good/interesting but the rest was just tediously extended to an absurd degree not at all justified by the insight provided in the commentary or the ridiculous number of clips of bo burnham. i don't think i would have even found it necessary if i were stoned.
anyway that circle of creators is sometimes informally referred to as 'leftube' or similar by its audience due to i guess being leftists and/or critical of the worryingly visible far-right factions of the site. i am personally very unimpressed by this collective's obvious awareness of, and apparent lack of interest in directly addressing, a phenomenon that any leftist viewing them will have noticed: virtually all of these creators are white, and given that most if not all of them rely heavily on cultural touchstones and memes to illustrate their broader theses, the narrowness of the cultural literacy that's evident in their work (this includes both lindsay ellis and todd in the shadows btw) will serve as a significant handicap to creating a space on youtube representing their political leanings that does not also reproduce racial separation and hierarchy. contemporary online meme culture is spawned in enormous part within black culture, so their utter cluelessness about, say, the work of any currently active black musician who isn't favorably covered on pitchfork and explicitly 'political' enough to make sense to them, coupled with their inability to include anyone who does have this level of cultural literacy in their frequent collaborative efforts is disappointing to say the least.
when this obvious phenomenon was brought up on twitter, the response from these creators was merely to retweet contrapoints's quote-tweet of a user's list of left-leaning creators of color along with the message "let's make leftube more representative!" or somesuch. meanwhile i am not especially hopeful that they won't continue to collaborate exclusively with one another, continue to congregate only with one another at fan meet-and-greets, #content creator conferences and the like, etc. etc. maybe one of them will retweet kat blaque or the1janitor once every month or something.
i have unsubscribed from both of the 'leftube' creators to whom i'd previously subscribed (contrapoints and hbomberguy). while i will probably continue to enjoy their work when i do come across it, i would rather spend whatever time i use actively seeking out content looking for creators who are not creating networks (because these creators are not just creating content, but networks of content!) that are so insular.
― dyl, Wednesday, 2 January 2019 20:06 (five years ago) link

Having listened to that podcast, I don't know, I'm probably more on board with Natalie than I am with Fran! The point that Natalie gets to, eventually, is that beauty isn't forever, that "looking good" isn't just about being beautiful but about _style_, which is a form of positive self-expression. It does matter to me what people think of me, how people look at me, and just because my control of that (particularly as a non-cis person) is extremely limited doesn't mean that it's futile or wrong for me to try and look good!
Listening to trans voices is a hugely double-edged sword (I guess like one of those Castlevania swords?) for me. On the one hand it's hugely affirming, is great for helping me feel less alone, but on the other hand it makes me aware how hurt and damaged pretty much all of us have been by what we've been through. I am a little jealous of these young trans people because as superficial and naive as they can be about a lot of things, and as much open hostility and hatred as they have to put up with for being who they are, they don't have the internalized self-loathing that people of my age and older all seem to, they haven't been deformed by it the way we have.
Having gone through decades of chronic mental illness, self-harm, suicidal ideation, suicidal intent, crippling panic attacks, drug addiction, and somehow having not just survived all that but made it to being a well-adjusted, happy, and successful human being, I'm absolutely terrified of throwing that all away, which it sometimes seems like I'm doing. I'm not actually, though. Being a well-adjusted, happy, and successful human being requires me to accept myself for who I am, even if it means being hated and scorned by other people.

try as I might I can't make heads or tails of this Contrapoints "cancellation"
― Simon H., Saturday, 7 September 2019 05:21 (four years ago) link
Is she canceled though?
She quit twitter, right? But she got as much support as criticism. Its hard to see her really losing subscribers on this? I don't quite now how to judge but a high profile person is always going to come under attack, and from all directions. If some people were unhappy with her I think thats generally ok if thats their take
― anvil, Saturday, 7 September 2019 06:02 (four years ago) link
Its tangentially related but I was thinking about the concepts of "the left eats their own" vs "why are there no left wing grifters", and whether 'cancellation culture' is actually that bad.
Right wing media tends to be more personality driven, so cancellation doesn't really happen, and leftist media tends to be more issue driven, so taking a position on an issue can be more divisive. (but then the right has fractious splits, PJW vs Shapiro, but then seems personality led fallout)
― anvil, Saturday, 7 September 2019 06:10 (four years ago) link
I just can't even tell what the actual controversy was, by the time I heard about it she was off twitter
― Simon H., Saturday, 7 September 2019 06:17 (four years ago) link
I guess I could trawl through her mentions to figure it out but I'd really really rather not
oh, basically she said in 'hyperwoke' spaces everyone is giving their pronouns (leading to bizarre situation where an entirely cis group is doing this, and then Natalie has to do it and then situation where a passing trans has to explain when they might just like to be accepted)
and then she can go into a sports bar in NC and no one gaf, no one misgenders her, and she's called ma'am and miss all night
backlash being, well great for you who can pass
― anvil, Saturday, 7 September 2019 06:21 (four years ago) link
I might sorta have that wrong, could be deeper about the concept of 'passing', and that some non-binary people resented the possible implication that pronoun announcing is bad (or merely irritating to Natalie?)
― anvil, Saturday, 7 September 2019 06:26 (four years ago) link
it isn't the first time that she has kinda said stuff that made nb folks say "hey but uhhhhhhh" and i think the most recent super personal "if not for nb ppl i'd have an easier time" admission kinda made a whole bunch of people say "ok can we stop deifying this person" and she never signed on to be deified in the first place and other ppl took the opportunity to say she's been a lib the whole time and it's a real mess and a bunch of well-meaning people have been hurt by words of other well-meaning people

Honestly, I don't think I'm going to watch it. I think I'm done with Natalie. I'm tired her explaining and analyzing everything at length, I'm tired of her Influencer thing where she feels like she has to speak for everyone instead of just letting people speak for themselves. I'm tired of people who praise Natalie's videos and kind of implicitly assume that she respresents the Trans Perspective and going on to ignore that an extremely large number of trans people - I can't give you an exact number, but it's not rare and it's getting less rare as time goes on - aren't comfortable with her statements, don't agree with her soapboxing. I dread the day Natalie puts out a new video because it just starts up a whole new round of arguments all over again, and in any discussion the brilliant, gorgeous white girl Influencer with the bully pulpit is going to have a certain advantage.

deactivating your twitter account is good
natalie is smart and clever and persuasive and i'm sure she makes a lot of very good points, depending on your perspective "cancelling" can either be a howling irrational mob or the intersectional voice of marginalized peoples, it's just, i don't know, there are limits to discourse, there are limits to explaining things, there are limits to how many times i can hear someone patiently explain how i've completely misunderstood them and how unfairly i am judging them/taking them out of context. it just reminds me of all those times j.k. rowling insisted she wasn't a terf but just clicked "like" on all those transphobic tweets by "accident", and by and large, you know, it seemed like cis people believed her, and then last week everybody was all like "OH MY GOD J.K. ROWLING IS A TRANSPHOBE WHO KNEW?!?!?"
i can't speak to anything but my own experience. maybe there are trans communities where people are all "oh, cool, another contrapoints video!" like i used to be instead of "oh, god, another contrapoints video", which has, over the past year, become the dominant reaction to her videos from the trans communities i hang out in.

My belief is that, in the long run, there are no Youtubers who are not terrible. That communicating, or attempting to communicate, on Youtube, on Twitter, on Facebook, will inevitably make you a worse person. My belief is that there is a sort of Gresham's Law of Discourse - bad speech drives out good. My belief is that there is, in fact, "bad speech" - abuse, threats, bullying - and that its presence creates an emotional environment that renders all other considerations irrelevant.

― bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 3 January 2020 14:24 (four years ago) link
Yeah, you'll get no argument from me that YT comments are on average worse than in most other internet places and that the platform as a whole is mostly a force of evil, but the idea that it forcibly makes you a worse person feels like it's making it too much of a monolith; there are innumerable channels that're just people nerding out over their favourite hobbies or esoteric interests, and there's not much bullying or abuse happening on them, not even in the comments.
― Daniel_Rf, Friday, 3 January 2020 14:31 (four years ago) link
I have literally never purposely read a YT comment other than the "pinned" one left by the channel (with the exception of the grand old Sad YouTube collection). They're very easy not to read. You can even get a browser extension to hide them forever if you like!
― bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 3 January 2020 14:32 (four years ago) link
Sure, but if you're an *ahem* content creator I think you're more likely than not to read the comments. But those don't have to be a trash fire, is the thing.
― Daniel_Rf, Friday, 3 January 2020 14:36 (four years ago) link
the nyt also makes you a worse person
look, i don't know, maybe you can be like techmoan and post videos about nixie tubes and still be a healthy positive person, but if you go on youtube and talk about incels or the alt right or any of that shit that's going to cause problems for you, in the same way that doing one of those shit jobs as a "content moderator" on facebook is going to cause problems for you.
sure, i have browser extensions to hide comments, to hide those awful fucking videos youtube recommends you, and as a result i can still to some degree watch stuff on there, even though i know i probably should stop doing that.
― revenge of the jawn (rushomancy), Friday, 3 January 2020 14:40 (four years ago) link
i believe the deliberate infliction of emotional trauma and perpetuation of cycles of abuse is a key driver of "engagement" in the internet content industry's core business model.

I did watch the entire Contrapoints video although after a certain point it got to be a bit of a personal endurance test like the time I tried and failed to listen to nothing but Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion for two weeks or whatever. She made many good points and I get that part of the point was just the overwhelming nature of what it's like to be on the receiving end of the cancel barrage (via reading tweets about her for 10 minutes straight, etc.), but maybe she could have found a way to shave an hour off somewhere.
One thing that is going to haunt my nightmares is the word "truscum", the concept behind which I'm still a little fuzzy on, but which nevertheless made me shudder.

TEH ALGORITHMS took me to a video by someone calling himself "The History Guy". slightly craggy older white man with a bowtie, probably thinks quite highly of Bill Nye. the sort of white dude i wanted to be, probably, or at least reminds me of some of my friends who i haven't really talked to since i deactivated my social media.
anyway, i took a look at the stuff he was talking about... he does this strain of history about the things that i find myself reading when i browse wikipedia, sort of an open-minded white man's history canon for people who are tired of fucking Nazis all the time. he does social history, non-military history, although of course he does have your standard video on Able Archer.
of the ones i checked out the one i liked most was his video on Yip Harburg.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rF2vzftzp7k
he says at the end that it's not about the politics - that's kind of the modus operandi of such people, they want to sound Authoritative and Objective and of course he is as far as that goes but for someone like me, for whom There Is Nothing But The Sociopolitical Context, i think you can tell a lot about someone by what they talk about and how they talk about it. he's obviously really enthusiastic about harburg and it's infectious.
i don't think there are any Good Youtubers because Youtube structurally precludes "goodness", but i enjoyed watching his video on yip harburg and i suspect i would enjoy hanging out with this guy.

Following a few RIYL YT suggestions, came across his channel last week and got sucked in. The first few I watched, he uses a voicebox to call telephone scammers, pretending to be an 80 year old granny, and tries to waste as much of their time as possible. Listening to the scammers melt down, his own acting (with tangents and comments respectably suitable to his granny character), and periodic muting of the call to explain the scamming techniques - lots of LOLs and some good info to pass onto elders.

when u come to a thread to talk about a conversation months pastJust watched Natalie’s Canceling video. I think, like her other videos, it’s best if it is supplemented with other reading/watching on the topic, but watching it was informative and brought me closer to the issue at hand. I think I come away from all of Natalie’s videos more informed than I was going into them.To the point of it being too long: I felt that way too, and I assumed it was because she didn’t work with an editor on this video (which may be most crucial when you’re so deeply emotionally invested in a topic).

Caveat: It does suffer from the droney, x-files music in the background and the narrator has a really curious habit of adding an 's' to words that end in a 't' (why do some many of these YT guys have such odd voices?), but the content is A+

Okay, this is super unoriginal, but nothing cheers me more than watching young 'uns absolutely smashing it on their respective instruments, be it solo or in a band set-up.
Yoyoka's got a more solidified internal rhythm than most drummers I've ever played with and the way she leans into the snare and cymbals especially is totally joyful to see.
The way her expression switches from the 'hello' to hearing the count-in and landing on that intro, battering the fuck out of the kit, speaks volumes.

raccoons are filthy trash eaters by nature though, that is the way God made them. it's better they eat fresh hotdogs and disease-free grapes from the hand of a kindly old man than get their garbage foods from dumpsters full of hypodermic needles and used condoms like they normally do

I watched yesterday and totally agree it's one of her best in the last year. She's very good at foregrounding the concerns of the opposing view in her videos in a completely uninflammatory way that (I imagine) disarms those people before they've had a chance to look away from and knee-jerk refute her explication of things. At least some comments seem to suggest this is the case.
Loved the idealism at the end too that Rowling could be the one in a million to change her outlook. If anything could work...

According to people who worked on the show, Mr. Hailey asked Mr. Callaghan to focus on “party content” rather than news. “Reid from Doing Things was constantly pressuring us to make the show less political,” said Mr. Kahn.
It requires an impressive amount of stupidity to not realize what was driving its popularity and how they could have ridden it to no show jobs executive producing a television series instead of praying every day that a change to the Instagram algorithm doesn't zero out their meme accounts.

Answer: She recently tweeted about Raya and the Last Dragon, bringing plot comparisons to Avatar: The Last Airbender.People became aggravated because it was interpreted that she was saying that Raya copied Avatar thematically as Asian. It got blown up further by the fact that Avatar's primary writers are white and Raya's writers are Asian. It then began to snowball to include things she had previously been in hot water for, such as a poor joke about Reylo-esque shipping in things like the Harriet Tubman movie; her personal experiences with trans male friends not being so badly harassed after fully transitioning; among other things. It can be inferred that she started receiving harassment, as all these things eventually devolve into. In response, she probably deactivated her account to get a break from it, and the people that got mad at her took that as a victory, and are taking a lap.

To be fair, I watched a bit and it's not just her response video, it's more of an overview of the concept of cancelling in general.
Still didn't last long because shortly into it I'd sort of made me mind up that the lessons here were a) don't get into fights on twitter and b) fandoms centred around stuff for children are mostly populated by deranged people and actual children. Obviously I don't have my livelihood tied up into this demographic so things are harder for her.

I'll try to find some of the ones with more outdoors and mountain summit stuff, as those are the really good ones for me. Recently quite a few videos have been more van life oriented while he tweaks his new larger 4x4 van, which are probably not the most exciting or indicative introductions to the channel.

GeoWizard profiled in the Guardian, which spoiled the ending of his Scotland trip despite him asking the reporter not to. People in his patreon getting worried the media coverage might lead to lawsuits - which I think is prob inevitable down the line anyway, if he continues getting more popular? Enjoy it while it lasts is I guess what I'm saying.

Kirsten Dirksen, makes very loose videos about people who have built or renovated unusual homes all over the world, they're very simple and the lack of polish is actually quite complimentary.
They're obviously heavily reliant on the subject so not all of them are zingers, but a lot of them are worth your time.

I've been waiting for Contrapoints to get into more psychoanalytic territory for a while, so was thrilled by the latest video. Amazing as always, though I might have expected a little more Kleinian theory given that she's kind of the authority on the subject. Would have loved to hear Natalie applying split object theory to politics. Being someone who struggles greatly with an even more archly recursive and hostile form of 'not like other girls' syndrome, I was hoping for more of an envy-solving prescription in the summary than say yes to everything!. How does one cultivate such a permissive attitude to oneself and others in the face of an all-consuming paranoia for example, a friend might ask...
The Nietzsche quote about forgiveness being appositive to slave morality (ressentiment) and aligned with master morality felt like a false equivalence. Like, I get that not being compelled to take revenge is less contemptuous and more desirable, but forgiveness feels like a stretch. Is empowered indifference the same as forgiveness? Maybe it is. Maybe I need to read the book. This isn't the thread for this.
Anyway, I hope she gets to take a break now. Who could even edit a video like that?

This one is important. How A NYTimes Reporter Collects Royalties From Hundreds of Musicians:https://t.co/W6GxIrUPCm— Benn Jordan (@bennjordan) December 2, 2021
Ian Urbina’s book is legitimately good (assuming the reporting is trustworthy) so it’s wild to see him running something that looks objectively like a massive scam.

yeah, I don’t know how things got to this point, but it’s just… a really weird situation?
I ran across a profile on the project where he seemed to imply that the music project would help fund his investigative reporting work, which would be cool if everyone was on board with that, but it sounds like the musicians were told something much different.
― mh, Friday, 3 December 2021 19:41 (two years ago) link

I watched that whole video because of you guys. I suppose in prnciple I'm supposed to care about musicians not being given a shitty deal. Never heard of him either but he clearly put a lot of time (the value of which being the point) into filming himself talking in front blinken iights euroack and a green screen. I guess that's what he does and prodution values help to get views.

The one with his brother (Wales 3) was fantastic, his brother is just as eccentric as him if not more so, I'd have that over Norway and Scotland too. Sorry, Welsh Greg, lol

Despite the ropey bants of his support crew I loved the Football Across Britain one as well, culminating in the only ever hair-raisingly epic, EARNED rendition of Football's Coming Home (save for when the German crowd sung it during their 4-1 WC win over England, lmao)

I also LOVED the understandably short-lived experiment of his long-suffering girlfriend blindfolding him and driving him to random spots across the UK and seeing how long it took him to find out where he was

Norway is Tom & Verity too, slight qualification there is that the terrain was a bit uneventful, apart from the bit where he nearly died in a peat bog of course.

the pandemic made me a fan of those good mythical morning guys. and no i am not 12. they were comforting in a weird way. i still watch them. i also started watching a competitive eater named katina on youtube and i don't know why because i am not even really a huge hot dog contest guy. BUT again for some reason her voice-overs that she would do while she played footage of herself eating 20 hamburgers or whatever was really soothing to me! you never know what will get you through a plague. i even followed her u.k. trip. so many english breakfasts and tea service challenges. i do worry about her boyfriend randy though. he looks like maybe he needs to retire from the circuit. even if he is a legend. i also stopped watching them because i couldn't help but wonder how they expelled all that food after a challenge. i'm guessing enemas. but how else do you eat 12 pounds of food and then do it all over again in a day or two? maybe food just goes right through them at this point. and no they can't throw that much food up. they would die! and have permanent laryngitis.
also, i obviously watch hot ones like everyone else but i like the mythical kitchen last meal concept just as much. even the tom hanks one was good!

I too enjoy competitive eating videos occasionally. Did you ever watch Beard Meats Food (UK competitive eater and YouTuber), scott? He's the only one I do somewhat consistently follow.
― brain (krakow), Saturday, 1 July 2023 16:07 (eleven months ago) link
I agree about Randy Santel too. It's not at all surprising that many decades of doing that kind of eating will take its toll, however much you work to manage it.

i watched a TON of charlieBo313 during the pandemic too. it occurred to me that i watched a lot of travel/driving/trains/extreme running videos during the pandemic. which all makes perfect sense now. channels that are just horrible roads around the world and channels for scary tunnels. but anything with lots of distance covered and lots of movement.

I've recommended Foresty Forest here at least once before, but I wanted to highlight this recent video of his, which I thought was particularly great. It covers a multi-day hike in the Yukon, so the van content is minimal, but the outdoors stuff and scenery is amazing, and it's lovely to see him clearly having such a fantastic time. Lots of his awesome dog Rocko in it as well.

A fun game, inspired by Wikirace, for people interested in recommender systems: mask your identify from Google and click on YouTube suggestions until you reach a video that _promotes_ a fascistic, authoritarian, or intolerant view. A fun twist is too start with a seemingly innocuous subject.

kineko video posts some interesting stuff, this one is probably the most interesting yet... a late '60s/early '70s (i'd guess early '70s based on that heavy fuzz bass track, but it could be '60s) pilot for alice in wonderland, possibly put out by mushipro, with adolf hitler as the voice of the king

‘Jet Lag the Game’ appeared in my recommendations a few times, every time I thought it looked awful because of the irritating thumbnails. But for some reason I ended up watching the first Tag Across Europe and it was surprisingly entertaining, and now I’ve seen every season. Hits just the right balance of a game show / travel / comedy thing. Adam and Ben are a genuinely funny duo.

i'm not gonna say pablo foxfeeder is not *not* terrible but for the first time i caught him putting out the evening buffet and it is bonkers as hell, he's putting out dishes of kibble and topping them with sliced ham, ground beef, chunks of raw chicken, dumping cookies/biscuits on top, drizzling it all with honey, topping it off with a few raw eggs, i had no idea his foxes were eating this good
oh he just turned out the lights, foxes oughtta be stopping by soon, i bet there's kits, how much you want to bet there's kits
and there's this snail what was moseying on up to one of the dishes and there's such drama in this. is the snail hungry for meat? will the foxes eat the snail? i can only check in sporadically but this is thrilling to me
