Love the changing usernames of ilx. Usually I've been upfront about my previous incarnations. This time I had a bit of fun not telling people for a few weeks. ILX2 NEW USERNAME TRANSLATOR COMPENDIUM is an enjoyable bit of terrier work. It honestly freaks me out that there are people who get freaked out about it.

Not to mention the many users who have changed their names for serious privacy reasons.

I like stable usernames, if only because as time passes I accumulate sufficient impressions for them first to become personalities in my mind, then fully articulated human beings. That's nice, but not necessary.

New usernames I consider at first simply as text, not a name, and it is the least valuable text connected to a post. Those posts live or die entirely on their apparent merits. They may eventually become personalities; the posts themselves reveal enough for that process to get started, either the first wisps of kindness, thoughtfulness, curiosity or tentative openness, or perhaps the sour stink of egoism and nastiness.

As they say, a stranger may be a friend you haven't met, or they could just be another shithead on the internet. I'm always willing to see a new name as possibly a new person or a returned person who turned a new leaf, but my experience is, it's easier to change your login name than to change your spots. Shitheads often stay shitheads. The proof of the poster is in the posting.

I guess it's not that big a deal generally as long as people don't pretend to be someone other than who everyone knows them to be (*coughgabbnebcough*) and as long as people don't abuse it as a way to circumvent a ban (*coughcoughgabbnebcough*) and as long as people don't maintain multiple simultaneous socks in some sad adolescent attempt to blow everyone's miiiiiiinds maaaaaan (*coughhackgabbnebhackhacksputter*, enough with this chest cold already, sheesh).

FTR I've had a sum total of two usernames in fifteen years and I don't think it's any state secret what my username was previously or which fabulously-wealthy superceleb I am irl.

i think it's ok when people change their name. i've done it myself (on accident - i self-banned as Z S and then couldn't get it back).

i think it's ok when they don't identify themselves or make a connection to their old namewhen they want to just start over with relative anonymity.

deems, ilx is just a bunch of text on a screen, mostly written by people, in that bots are not yet a noticeable feature here, and people vary a lot, from one to another, or within themselves from day to day or from hour to hour. I know you get this. I understand that you disapprove of some what the people here do. me, too. but using a new username w/o identifying one's old username is neither fine or not fine; it is a choice that hurts no one, but annoys you. your annoyance is a bug, not a feature.

we're all connected here through what we contribute. our history with the board entire and any one other poster on it is an input into that relationship.

for one party to conceal that history is a bad faith engagement that changes that relationship utterly and while it may not be intentionally malicious we have seen it used so on many occasions.

i dont fwiw agree that anyone is owed nor entitled to a 'fresh start' with anyone else (anyone is ofc entitled to a fresh start in and of themselves, a different thing).

on the basis of self-loathing, or cowardice, or arrogance, or a variety of other human failings in varying degrees. that's life, both on and off the internet. given the opportunity to start a new identity some will abuse this possibility, others may use it to renew their humanity. I'd worry more about what their current incarnation does than whether they are dissociating themselves from last year's model that crashed and burned.

If there were a reliable way to ensure a continuity of identity on ilx similar to the way in which corporeal identity is difficult to evade because our height, weight, facial features, eye color, fingerprints and so on are exceedingly difficult to alter convincingly, then the consensus of ilx would probably be weighted toward moral disapproval of any attempts to evade one's history. Standards for contrition and redemption would no doubt be set and a probationary period observed. Since we cannot apply these standards, we must adjust to what is possible. I understand your disapproval, but I cannot see its application achieving any useful end.

Under the circumstances, other means and methods are needed. We may hatch a few cuckoo's eggs, but I trust we are smart enough to differentiate a cuckoo hatchling from our own chicks and stop feeding them.

when the internet first came along it really played into an enjoyment of constructing performative identities. when i was little i used to come down dressed as a different fictional character each morning and i wouldn’t respond until my mum addressed me correctly. this was difficult for her because the costume always tended to involve my dressing gown as some sort of cape or robe and a strong internal and therefore invisible sense of character identification.

when the internet came along it played into a sense that Karl outlines above - the ability to construct playful and performative identities who had a specific, quite narrow vector of interpretation on the world, and similarly specific modes of utterance.

of course the difficulty of maintaining that meant that often it was very much like the dressing gown all over again.

since the establishment of the web and social media in a more widespread way, as part of irl rather than separate and even in distinction and opposition to it, there’s more of a requirement of “external” consistency of identity, rather than darragh’s “internal” consistency.

i we be sorry to lose the playfulness that assumed identities allow, but obv playfulness is a hairsbreadth from mischief or malevolence.

but most socks or changed identities are just people in their dressing gown imo.

transacting between the two is endlessly complicated work. i was and still am congenitally divided, something i put down to being very very shy for most of my childhood.

This is why, when I had to re-register on this site, I went with my "deethelurker" moniker instead of something better matching me/my identity. Anyone complaining about this issue, however, hasn't been on here long as I remember when people around here used to change handles all the time and you just had to catch up to whatever such-and-such poster was going as that month/week.

nah, not really, i mean, anyone who is a fairly regular poster has a unique style in terms of which threads they post on, the types of things they post on said threads, etc. Some stand out more than others, in that there are specific somewhat esoteric threads that they are one of only a handful of people that post on, but if you actually want to figure out who someone used to be, it doesn't take that much in the way of time and effort. Totally legit and understandable if you actually don't care to do so ... I definitely stopped caring.

I’ve tried to break in this name with Lorax references like the fuzzy monster next to it now, or “The Ghost of Lorax Past” which I used for a few months.

I also used “he said captain, I said wot” for a few months
