This is obviously non exhaustive but I was going for the absolute worst I could think of.

Not included: emigrants or citizens raised or living in Ireland.

Also not included: people like George Osborne who claim they’re Irish (but are actually Ascendancy).

gyac, Tuesday, 7 May 2019 18:46 (six years ago)

Reagan and Blair had the most power. I am still directly affected by Reagan's misdeeds, so him.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Tuesday, 7 May 2019 19:11 (six years ago)

He is (not surprisingly) a racist:

Michael Flatley openly supports Mike "violent rapist" Tyson AND Gemma "the racist" O'Doherty. Yeah, the world's favourite Irish American doesn't like immigrants. The ignorance of this is bewildering yet fits his egocentric character. #noracists #immigrantswelcome pic.twitter.com/SS7T39JRou

The radio station I have an occasional show on have news clippings by the door, one of them is their youngish female presenter reviewing a restaurant with Rory McG. Every time I pass it I think about how her fledgling media career has led to her basically being required to go on a date with a disheveled bore and convicted stalker 30 years her senior, maybe she doesn't see it like that, but it's still very creepy.

ts: Blair vs Flatley for most diddley-eye shite

Blair:

Tony Blair has described his late mother as an “almost saintly woman” whose death changed his life forever. Blair’s mother Hazel Blair was raised in Co. Donegal and came from what he described as a ‘fiercely Protestant’ family.

Speaking about his Irish roots, Blair said that he loved going to Ireland every year and the family would usually stay at the Sandhouse Hotel in Rossnowlagh, near Ballyshannon.

He wrote, “At that beach I learned to swim in the freezing Atlantic Ocean. I had my first go at chasing girls, aged about 11. I was taught my first chords on the guitar. I drank my first Guinness.”

Flatley:
His father, Michael, came from Culfadda, Co. Sligo, and his mother Eilish from Co. Carlow. They left Ireland in 1947 for Chicago “with nothing, like most Irish people,” according to their son.

They worked hard at their construction business, through punishing summers and freezing winters.

“We worked seven days a week, including holidays, we didn't go on unemployment benefit but we made it,” Flatley told a conference in 2007. “We didn't bitch about the guy next door who was richer because he sold his house for more money and we didn't bitch about the guy down the street who might be poorer. That is the sign of the Irish spirit.”

gyac, Tuesday, 7 May 2019 20:18 (six years ago)

Jim Davidson was on the wiki list.

funny little wormhole to go down is the bridget hitler one, and where all that nonsense about the scouse hitlers comes from. lolled at her son William Patrick Hitler failing to blackmail Hitler into giving him a top job in the reich, then writing an article entitled Why I hate My Uncle for Time magazine.

Murdoch's "Scottish" surely?

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Friday, 31 May 2019 09:15 (six years ago)

Certainly a lot more than he is Irish.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Friday, 31 May 2019 09:19 (six years ago)

yeah thats the first one to jump out

morgan, not having, diaspora needs not to be so avowedly of the new nation- nb this isnt a hard and fast rule obv but it fuckin is when the new nation is tory

I maintain that Michael Flatley is the correct answer.

tbh I didn't vote because every time I clicked on someone who wasn't Murdoch (mostly Brendan O'Neill tbh) my brain went "but obviously Murdoch is *worse*" but it felt weird picking Murdoch when I didn't even know he had anything to do with Ireland until this thread

anyway he doesn't come close to most entrants on this list but I just wanted to record somewhere that I get v confused when I see posts from former UKIP MEP Patrick O'Flynn on Twitter and think "why does this person with an Irish name have such UKIPpy takes on Brexit"

not sure murdoch has ever made claims of any connection so i'm not sure why anyone would preemptively claim him

mh, Friday, 31 May 2019 18:05 (six years ago)

Murdoch's an outstanding choice for a "worst member", but as for "Irish diaspora", not so much.

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 31 May 2019 18:10 (six years ago)

Definitely the worst member of the Irish-English-Scottish diaspora.

gyac, Friday, 31 May 2019 18:12 (six years ago)

gyac, Friday, 31 May 2019 18:12 (six years ago)

"Elisabeth Murdoch was born in Melbourne on 8 February 1909, the third daughter of Marie Grace de Lancey (Forth) and Rupert Greene. Her grandfather, William Henry Greene, was an Irish railway engineer (later one of the three Commissioners of Victorian Railways) who emigrated to Australia and married Fanny, the fourth of the 10 daughters of George Govett.[1] Her mother's ancestors were Scottish and English; one of her maternal great-grandfathers was a lieutenant governor in the West Indies.[2] Elisabeth was educated at St Catherine's School in Toorak, and at Clyde School in Woodend.[3] She married Keith Murdoch, 23 years her senior, in 1928 and inherited the bulk of his fortune when he died in 1952."

mark s, Friday, 31 May 2019 18:21 (six years ago)

The obvious question is does being an engineer for an Irish railway make you Irish, especially if your surname is Greene?

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 31 May 2019 18:32 (six years ago)

The next obvious question would be, does having just one maternal great-grandparent make you part of the Irish diaspora?

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 31 May 2019 18:34 (six years ago)

Only if you've read Ulysses in its entirety.

greene is an irish surname (can also be an english one, but that's fairly common)

part of my family are harleys, also a name that can be english, but they're irish catholics from donegal. some anglicization going on, as with greene I'm sure

gyac, Friday, 31 May 2019 20:16 (six years ago)

I'm an O'Dowd with a dropped O, which was as far as my dad's anglicisation went, probably because despite him having an impressive skill set/experience in building and as a fitter, he wouldn't have stood a chance in the jobs market against someone without an O in front of their name in 60's/70's England.

even his Irish dad seems to think he's a twat. He wrote in his book that he moved from Limerick to Slough. His dad wasn't impressed with his bad Irish jokes and disparaging comments about Limerick and also he corrected that they in fact moved from Limerick to South Kensington, which is not Slough.

calzino, Monday, 24 April 2023 10:28 (two years ago)

Yes it seems they had a fallout and he hasn't spoken to his dad in years - much to the the relief of the father I assume.

I hate our diaspora SO much. Obscuring actual discrimination in favour of sharing white suprematist talking points, couldn’t be me

I keep seeing these takes about Irish people “not counting” as white in U.S. history and honestly, there is nothing historical about such a claim. The Irish were included in the ‘white’ column of every colonial census going back to Stapleton’s Leeward Islands survey in the 1670s. pic.twitter.com/IViHErffA0
