i have had "friday night" stuck in my head for weeks

Only about 1/7 of this show worked for me but man that 1/7 killed

yeah it reminds me a lot of Key & Peele in that regard - K&P had a better hit rate but they both did the "take a goofy SNL-style comedy premises and dial it up five extra notches" sorta thing

I will say this show's good sketches nail the landing more often than K&P's good ones, which generally just petered out

one that i love that no one talks about is the faux-elvis guy trying to record his rock song who makes the mistake of telling his backing band to "just wing it"

i think the honk if you're horny/"friday night" sketch is perfect. after that my favorite is probably the overwhelming dark energy of the howie sketch. i have met that guy... many times

Speaking of the skeleton war, there's something very dril-ian about the Robinson persona often used in these sketches

i can see that. it has a similar absurdist ethos, scatalogical focus, and disregard for polite society.

gotta say this is definitely a show that gets the most out of its guest stars. I'd imagine pretty much all of those sketches were written with someone in mind.

So it seems one of this show's best tricks is to suddenly reverse the peripheral "straight man" supporting/side characters into active participants in the silliness.

this show is very strange for me, and this might be a weird me thing, but i find i enjoy remembering sketches on this show more than i enjoy them when i'm actually watching it? (this isn't quite accurate but the best way i can put it)

It very much is "grower" humor; no matter how much I laugh at a sketch, I become incapacitated when I think back to it (and subsequent watches are even funnier to me, which isn't exactly what you're describing but related)

I'm the opposite, I think I've become a little inoculated to it! I still recognize its genius without actually laughing.

I can see that but OTOH I just had "What is her job?" pop into my head and I can't stop giggling

also the structure/characters/tone can be repetitive over the course of an episode so the moments shine more in isolation (ie when you think back on them)

There’s one disturbing undercurrent to this show that the NYT piece did not touch upon.

So many of Robinson’s characters remind me of coked up guys who corner you in a bar, impose upon you, and insist that you “owe them” something. This is what makes many of his sketches difficult for me to watch. It’s not a question of a guy who doesn’t understand cultural rules/norms. It’s more of a case of a guy who wants to dominate you and colonize your sense of reality. To repeat myself it’s a very cocaine-ish sense of reality.

Well there's different facets to the show that come out in different sketches, but I find his character - or his stand-in characters, e.g. the "Frankentstein's Girlfriend" character - more menacing than childlike. To me there's real anxiety involved with imagining how I would deal with these characters in real life. It's still LOL funny, don't get me wrong.

that's my biggest problem with SNL as exemplified by the "Roundball Rock" sketch which was one of the few Tim Robinson actually managed to get on the show. first few minutes of that are hilarious, then they kinda just beat the joke into the ground and have the characters just destroy the set for whatever reason

Sure it is -- think of how many SNL sketches had awful endings that were met with applause (obviously prompted by the applause sign). In addition to a sketch being funnier with a dead-stop lack of resolution, it would be that much funnier with an audience applauding such a baffling ending.

I think it being formulaic and the same character over and over is inseparable from what makes it funny, a lot of it feels like it takes place inside one person's head - or the humour comes from the tension between the version of reality inside one characters head and the incompatibility between that and 'real' reality, which I guess is the case with lots of sketch shows, but here it often not clear if what you are seeing is the version of reality inside the characters head or the 'real' reality, and sometimes the perspective will shift mid-way through a sketch? Some of the conversations feel like a dream, in that when you have a conversation a dream it's all taking place inside your own head, you're actually only having a conversation with yourself, it's a monologue and not a dialogue.

I wasn't getting 'cokehead' or 'overgrown child' from the characters as much as 'autism spectrum disorder'. A lot of the sketches seem to be based around someone unable to mentally model other people's thoughts and feelings, to imagine the world from someone else's perspective, unable to connect with other people. Or that particular nauseous feeling when you say something that seems perfectly straightforward and self-evident inside your own head, but you're met with looks of confusion and discomfort - struggling and failing to communicate something inside your head to other people.

some of the intentionally bad/off sounding dialogue, the more Tim and Eric type stuff also makes me think of someone talking to themselves - I don't know what the correct term for this is, but "functional" dialogue, like the dialogue characters speak in adverts or instructional films or the non-pornographic scenes in porn films, where the purpose isn't the conversations themselves, like they would be in a drama, but the dialogue is functional set up whatever the purpose of the footage is, and it sometimes has a kind of eeriness about it when out of context because it feels like one person talking to themselves, the people speaking don't have any inner life you can infer. And sometimes characters in the sketches go from sounding like 'real' people to sounding like someone having a conversation with themselves.

in writers rooms, writing that kind of dialogue can often be a tedious chore, since it obv has no purpose other than to establish that the action takes place at a party, meeting, etc, but if you dont get it right it will sound weird and distracting. Equally tedious is coming up with character and place names that dont sound made up, which is harder than you might think, especially when you need a whole script full of them. one of the little pleasures of the show for me is how they mess with the form by almost seeming to call attention to how little effort was put into coming up with that stuff, beyond the bare minimum needed to support the structure of the scene. So many of the names just sound like first-thought placeholder names that you use when writing because you dont want to lost momentum by getting hung up thinking of a 'good' name: Corncob TV, Jeffy Jeremy, Roy Donk, etc.

there are certain words and phrases and images that pop up in different sketches as well, this might just be because they're words Tim Robinson finds funny, but it does kind of make it feel dreamlike, like your brain is cycling through the things you happened to see that day, and they pop up in random places - like the cigar in the driving crooner skit, and then the cigars on Will Forte's phone in the Ponytail sketch, or the various references to skeletons

there are lots sketches in this show where there's a familiar/bland format or situation and then they introduce some particular detail that is weird and/or overly specific, and distracts from everything else, and becomes the focus when it shouldn't be.

weird, oddly specific details feels like a feature of a lot of internet humour, the kind of details that you wouldn't include in a (competently written) work of fiction because they don't serve any purpose or are actively distracting, I think because a lot of internet humour is based on imitating weird stuff that real people post to the internet - blog posts or forum posts, or adverts and articles that are written by non-native English speakers, or stuff written by the mentally ill, or wikipedia articles with weird, intriguing, not fully explained asides. A lot of clickhole articles followed this format of familiar, bland format and then introducing weird, specific, not fully explained details.

stuff people share on the internet like screenshots of newspaper articles or non-fiction books with some weird details, I think that inspires a lot of this kind of humour

yeah props for creating a show where you genuinely have no clue where anything's gonna go. loved how you spend the first 10 minutes wondering "why is this called The Chair Company??" but if you watch ITYSL as soon as you see it you know, ok the whole show's gonna be about that

the entire "I need my air machine" setup was so funny

The father in law's continual criticism of their dead dog's behavior got me.

Also the assistant screaming at the red light after she almost plows into a truck

the hellish chaos at the restaurant was very funny but also maybe only like a 15% exaggeration of the vibe of many public places in america in 2025

I'm only one episode in, but I really like having Robinson play a character at an executive level. It feels like what it would be like to work under Pete Hegseth or other recent appointees to federal leadership.

Watched the first episode of Task before this, which gave me the 2000s HBO experience of Sopranos into Curb. Now am ready to see Ruffalo's character have to report to Robinson.

Kudos to Tim for being more of a distinct character in this vs. Friendship where his character in that just seemed like he was plucked out of a ITYSL sketch (behavior and decisions not making a ton of character or story sense aside from serving comedic turns to surprise/entertain the audience).

Getting some like a velvet glove cast in iron vibes from this, but we’ll see how deep the mystery goes.

otm, honestly the least realistic part of the chair plot is that he was actually able to make some progress on his quest. I take it for granted at this point that most consumer products are made by anonymous interchangeable impenetrable Chinese “companies” that barely have any employees or identity, let alone customer service, and that any attempt to interface with them beyond giving them money traps you in an ourobouros of frustration

one thing that bugged me was Tim tapping the phone on the computer monitor to drop a file in, is that something you can actually do? kinda funny if not because otherwise this show's portrayal of modern technology is way way more accurate than anything I've seen recently

all the interactions between him and the security guy are incredible, its like David Lynch directing a Naked Gun movie

I was pretty amazed at how touching the scene with the father in law was, especially since 10 minutes earlier you saw him outside a restaurant having a very loud mental breakdown on the street, feels like the door is opened for some really crazy things to happen

What's so refreshing is that unlike any number of characters/i think you should leave or even friendship roles he's played, in this series he's actually, despite all the cringe behavior and refusal to back down, somewhat competent. Both in his work and personal relations, and his unravelling of this mystery.

So for every time he does something really dumb that causes some really terrible response, he also figures something out! Or...doesn't mess up! When they cut away from that TV interview, what a relief that was.

Even in the first episode, when we’re expecting his speech to go off the rails, it goes just fine. Which makes the other stuff more unpredictable/fun.

i loved the little character detail in his interaction with his son, he gave him the stupid little plastic hat from his spy kit and his son reveals that he inherited his dad's instinct to try to smooth over awkward moments with absurd lies by immediately going like "oh yeah i've heard about these." and then he later has the hat attached to his bag like a keychain lol

Slightly funnier than that I believe the line was actually "oh yeah i've read about these" causing Tim's character to make a quick ??? face

agree w/ everybody that Tim being a fully realized character helps a lot. like I read him as a guy who came up through the business world in the 90s and he's still stuck in that era so he finds himself immensely frustrated by how much the climate has changed. He's used to being able to be somewhat rude and stiff with employees and not hearing anything about it so he struggles to deal with daily hearing from them about his microaggressions.

but he's not like, one of those 'old man yells at cloud' guys either, he has an LGBTQ+ daughter that he is very supportive of, and he usually comes around when it comes to hurting his employees' feelings, he's just...a dude that can't accept that things don't work the way they're supposed to.

Like his anger about the chair breaking is the embarrassment, but it becomes more that he can't even talk to a human being that built the chair to tell them "your defective chair humiliated me", so he can't let it go because there SHOULD be someone to talk to.

think that makes everything land much more absurd. but his "huh?" squints keep sending me, like when he does it when they said there were people drinking at the lot and a high school teacher was there with his shirt off.

but I do also keep saying "oh that actor was in <x> skit". like when the HR meeting happened I started LOLing cos the Legal guy was the dude from the Carmine Laguzio sketch who kept getting frustrated that Tim wouldn't do the prank

it also makes the entire premise pretty unique spin on a familiar angle, obviously there are tons of shows where the main dude is desperately trying to hide something but that's because it's illegal or a betrayal, here he's trying to hide what he's up to because he knows it'll expose him as a lunatic. even though he's clearly onto something and has physical evidence he can't exactly reveal why he decided to pursue it in the first place.

but yeah it definitely feels of a piece with all the ITYSL stuff - for one because of the theme of what people actually are *actually* thinking about when they're at work, for two the way he's constantly saying "this isn't normal! this is weird! what are they doing to us!??" and even though it makes him look insane deep down you know that he's at least partially right

There's an interesting theme of responsibility running through this;
Not just the chair company being impervious to blame, but the mirror image where tr's somehow on the hook for teenagers getting drunk in a vacant lot, and the upskirt thing too...

Enjoying the show a lot so far. Probably not quite as funny as ITYSL or Friendship, but it still has some lols. I loved that shirt store employee - his delivery and odd dialogue gave me heavy The Room vibes

last episode was more of a straight dramatic episode. it works in its favor, because the more serious they take it, the funnier things get, but they really made a good choice making the Jeep tour thing less a comedic aside and actually getting into why it was something he found important.

the flashbacks seem to indicate the family knows Ron's been mentally unbalanced for a while...the daughter looking at his location on the phone seems like a clear indication of how next week's episode is going to start but who knows with this show it throws so many curveballs

i feel like it's pretty obvious that what Tecca is covering up is obviously much more benign than what Tim thinks. I mean for a while you wondered if it was an unreliable narrator and only Ron was seeing things but now enough instances of other people having indirect involvement means the stuff that's happening is probably real, but all Tecca has done is low-level prank shit. they signed him up for shit under fake email addresses, sent a costumed hockey mask guy to his porch, paid some shitty, ineffective security guard to ding him in the head.

I feel like it'd be totally Tim Robinson for the final episode to reveal that they were hiding something that is very 'who cares' and he has to deal with the 'i wasted months of my life over this?', only to find out that someone else within Tecca was hiding something actually substantial that the other members of the board didn't know. actually I'd love it if the finale is just 60 minutes of bizarre revelation after revelation in escalating absurdity

probably just a bored Webmaster behind it all

yea Ron's theory obviously makes sense (and I think would square with the guy from last week being forced to work naked) but he's missing some pretty big pieces of evidence. he's clearly onto something though but yea I'd wager the truth is something far more bizarre than what he's expecting. in fact it clearly seems like two things are going on given the fridge landing on the co-worker whose name he used to check out the properly records despite "they" clearly knowing who Ron is but it could just be more misdirection

So many incredible moments this episode.

One favourite when they crash through the door in Oliver's apartment and yep, there's his drama coach refusing to leave

don't wanna overstate it but that might be the most bonkers episode of anything I've ever seen, only comparison that comes to mind are certain scenes from S1 of True Detective

love how it planted so many seeds of future plotlines and did so much foreshadowing that you assume isn't going anywhere because it's done the bait and switch so many times before - will the video of Tim kissing another woman mean anything? or the fact that he's one bonk on the head away from brain damage? is whatever his boss needs to talk to him about gonna be anything relevant at all?

dropping "Life Stinks" by Pere Ubu into the middle of this one was amazing

this was the most stressful episode yet and probably the most 'thrilling' one. and yet it was also weirdly straightforward in comparison to other episodes. enjoyed it immensely but also LOLed where at the end, we still have no idea what is going on, other than I'm more and more convinced a huge rugpull will eventually come in the finale.

at this point it kind of reminds me of movies like Vanilla Sky and Donnie Darko, there's so much weird shit compounding upon itself that it seems impossible to pull together a coherent explanation, outside of "whats happening isn't really happening", except this show has slowly revealed that every character is basically as insane as Ron is, save for maybe the wife and a couple of co-workers

actually the funniest thing was having shady looking people entering the grounds in the wee hours of the morning only to reveal they've been building a shitty bridge for remote control cars

i wasn't sure what to make of that either, but the show tends to have some visible age gaps that make no sense, like ron's coworker who supposedly went to high school with him. one of the things i like about the show is it seems like when they have a choice between something that makes any rational sense and something that's funny they always go with funny

prob the best episode yet, I mean I gotta watch it again it was so crazy

saw this show described as "anti-Reddit" as in it's so unpredictable that you can't even bother to speculate about what's gonna happen next and every trope it uses is instantly subverted. only thing I can think of that reminds me of it is maybe seeing The Big Lebowski or Pulp Fiction for the first time
