now i’m riding shotgun in your car with the steering wheel that doesn’t fly off while you’re driving

THREE STACKS ON THE RADIO

maura, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 03:19 (six years ago)

i have had "friday night" stuck in my head for weeks

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 03:19 (six years ago)

Only about 1/7 of this show worked for me but man that 1/7 killed

Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 03:24 (six years ago)

yeah it reminds me a lot of Key & Peele in that regard - K&P had a better hit rate but they both did the "take a goofy SNL-style comedy premises and dial it up five extra notches" sorta thing

frogbs, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 03:44 (six years ago)

I will say this show's good sketches nail the landing more often than K&P's good ones, which generally just petered out

Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 03:49 (six years ago)

one that i love that no one talks about is the faux-elvis guy trying to record his rock song who makes the mistake of telling his backing band to "just wing it"

devvvine, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 14:35 (six years ago)

of course after i post that, i see that sketch is listed in the ringer's "best tv moments of 2019 so far"

na (NA), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 14:37 (six years ago)

yeah that one was my fav sketch.

i also have a soft spot for the sketch where the ghost of sam richardson future screams at scrooge and recruits him into the skeleton war

i think the honk if you're horny/"friday night" sketch is perfect. after that my favorite is probably the overwhelming dark energy of the howie sketch. i have met that guy... many times

frogbs, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 15:11 (six years ago)

Speaking of the skeleton war, there's something very dril-ian about the Robinson persona often used in these sketches

Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 15:14 (six years ago)

i can see that. it has a similar absurdist ethos, scatalogical focus, and disregard for polite society.

old cloud yells at man (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 15:23 (six years ago)

The maniacal confidence in ill-conceived ideas

Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 15:31 (six years ago)

feel like i could assemble a dril tweet just out of the hot dog car sketch

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 15:50 (six years ago)

for me this show is like the center of a venn diagram between mr. show and tim and eric. the great sketches are highly rewatchable

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 15:53 (six years ago)

I believe Conner O’Malley was brought to earth just for “Honk If You’re Horny” sketch.

Rambling hot dog car crash is another peak that comes to mind.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 15:54 (six years ago)

I've only seen CO'M in this and his series of videos aimed at Howard Schultz but he uh certainly makes a quick impression

Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 15:58 (six years ago)

His “perfect egg bite” scene from Joe Pera Talks to You is another all-timer

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 16:03 (six years ago)

Also his appearances as the beast masturbator during the public access run of the Chris Gethard show

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 16:05 (six years ago)

didn't realize he was the guy behind those "what kind of player pimp drives that" vines, but he's a unique talent.

maura, Monday, 8 July 2019 14:52 (six years ago)

gotta say this is definitely a show that gets the most out of its guest stars. I'd imagine pretty much all of those sketches were written with someone in mind.

frogbs, Monday, 8 July 2019 14:56 (six years ago)

So it seems one of this show's best tricks is to suddenly reverse the peripheral "straight man" supporting/side characters into active participants in the silliness.

Evan, Monday, 8 July 2019 20:32 (six years ago)

This show has some real good bits but I can 100% do without the lazy, post-Tim & Eric wacky edit stuff.

yeah I love this sort of thing, sketch comedy is inheritably predictable so I like that this show really isn't. though this is also sort of a Tim & Eric thing.

Forgive the thread spam, but I wanted to note that this show's 2019 season is nominated in the 2019 ILX TV poll:

ILX's Best Television of 2019 Poll / VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD / Voting Ends January 31

If you like this show and you'd like to see it have a good showing in the poll (running in February) all you need to do is submit a ballot including it and your other favorites (4 minimum, 25 maximum, organized by your favorite to least favorite) to forksclovetofu at gmail by end of day today. It'll take five minutes; get to it!

rewatching this again, its definitely hitting me now how much this show seems to be influenced by "weird Twitter" sort of humor. I know dril was mentioned upthread but it's more than that. I see stills from this all over the place on social media (since I only follow the best & funniest people) and I'm starting to think that was by design

this show is very strange for me, and this might be a weird me thing, but i find i enjoy remembering sketches on this show more than i enjoy them when i'm actually watching it? (this isn't quite accurate but the best way i can put it)

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 11 November 2021 18:11 (four years ago)

It very much is "grower" humor; no matter how much I laugh at a sketch, I become incapacitated when I think back to it (and subsequent watches are even funnier to me, which isn't exactly what you're describing but related)

talkin' about his flat tire (DJP), Thursday, 11 November 2021 18:12 (four years ago)

I'm the opposite, I think I've become a little inoculated to it! I still recognize its genius without actually laughing.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 11 November 2021 18:13 (four years ago)

I can see that but OTOH I just had "What is her job?" pop into my head and I can't stop giggling

talkin' about his flat tire (DJP), Thursday, 11 November 2021 18:14 (four years ago)

also the structure/characters/tone can be repetitive over the course of an episode so the moments shine more in isolation (ie when you think back on them)

I just blasted through the whole series since my brother's been on me forever to watch it. And we both kinda said the same thing. I keep having flashbacks where I'm like, wait, that was way funnier than my initial reaction to it would suggest. Like I just keep thinking about that Conner O'Malley character depicting a third grader's notion of what horniness entails and it's killing me.

knuckleheaded mornonic bafoon (Old Lunch), Thursday, 11 November 2021 18:25 (four years ago)

ditto the Blues Brothers bit

talkin' about his flat tire (DJP), Thursday, 11 November 2021 18:50 (four years ago)

Part of it is that Tim Robinson's brain operates on a slightly different comedic wavelength than the wavelengths I'm familiar with so it took me some time to reconfigure my own brain accordingly. Like I watched the first episode when the series was initially released and the toilet paper sketch just kept going on and on, creating this needlessly and increasingly convoluted uncomfortable situation, and I just figured that it was a matter of the premise shooting past his intentions and landing with a thud. And now I realize that that vibe is pretty much precisely what he's going for more often than not.

Not-particularly-insightful-nor-revealing piece in the NYTimes:

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/02/magazine/tim-robinson-i-think-you-should-leave.html

Robinson’s face is both anonymous and one of a kind. He has a big flaring dolphin fin of a nose; small, deep-set eyes that sit in little pools of shade; a warm, gaptoothed smile.

I had been warned that Robinson is deeply uncomfortable doing media.

Gee, I can't fucking imagine why.

jaymc, Sunday, 4 June 2023 20:29 (two years ago)

There’s one disturbing undercurrent to this show that the NYT piece did not touch upon.

So many of Robinson’s characters remind me of coked up guys who corner you in a bar, impose upon you, and insist that you “owe them” something. This is what makes many of his sketches difficult for me to watch. It’s not a question of a guy who doesn’t understand cultural rules/norms. It’s more of a case of a guy who wants to dominate you and colonize your sense of reality. To repeat myself it’s a very cocaine-ish sense of reality.

Well there's different facets to the show that come out in different sketches, but I find his character - or his stand-in characters, e.g. the "Frankentstein's Girlfriend" character - more menacing than childlike. that's my biggest problem with SNL as exemplified by the "Roundball Rock" sketch which was one of the few Tim Robinson actually managed to get on the show. first few minutes of that are hilarious, then they kinda just beat the joke into the ground and have the characters just destroy the set for whatever reason

SNL have a lot of time to kill, so the sketches always go on too long. Meanwhile every year Tim gives us a streamlined equivalent that turns out be the length of uh 1 SNL episode

Me too; he's one of those actors whose name I shout when he appears unexpectedly. I saw him at Second City in the late '80s, and you could tell then that he was going places.

Sure it is -- think of how many SNL sketches had awful endings that were met with applause (obviously prompted by the applause sign). In addition to a sketch being funnier with a dead-stop lack of resolution, it would be that much funnier with an audience applauding such a baffling ending.

I think it being formulaic and the same character over and over is inseparable from what makes it funny, a lot of it feels like it takes place inside one person's head - or the humour comes from the tension between the version of reality inside one characters head and the incompatibility between that and 'real' reality, which I guess is the case with lots of sketch shows, but here it often not clear if what you are seeing is the version of reality inside the characters head or the 'real' reality, and sometimes the perspective will shift mid-way through a sketch? Some of the conversations feel like a dream, in that when you have a conversation a dream it's all taking place inside your own head, you're actually only having a conversation with yourself, it's a monologue and not a dialogue.

I wasn't getting 'cokehead' or 'overgrown child' from the characters as much as 'autism spectrum disorder'. A lot of the sketches seem to be based around someone unable to mentally model other people's thoughts and feelings, to imagine the world from someone else's perspective, unable to connect with other people. Or that particular nauseous feeling when you say something that seems perfectly straightforward and self-evident inside your own head, but you're met with looks of confusion and discomfort - struggling and failing to communicate something inside your head to other people.

he thinks it's chinese money (soref), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:10 (two years ago)

some of the intentionally bad/off sounding dialogue, the more Tim and Eric type stuff also makes me think of someone talking to themselves - I don't know what the correct term for this is, but "functional" dialogue, like the dialogue characters speak in adverts or instructional films or the non-pornographic scenes in porn films, where the purpose isn't the conversations themselves, like they would be in a drama, but the dialogue is functional set up whatever the purpose of the footage is, and it sometimes has a kind of eeriness about it when out of context because it feels like one person talking to themselves, the people speaking don't have any inner life you can infer. And sometimes characters in the sketches go from sounding like 'real' people to sounding like someone having a conversation with themselves.

he thinks it's chinese money (soref), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:21 (two years ago)

^ yeah very well put.

in writers rooms, writing that kind of dialogue can often be a tedious chore, since it obv has no purpose other than to establish that the action takes place at a party, meeting, etc, but if you dont get it right it will sound weird and distracting. Equally tedious is coming up with character and place names that dont sound made up, which is harder than you might think, especially when you need a whole script full of them. one of the little pleasures of the show for me is how they mess with the form by almost seeming to call attention to how little effort was put into coming up with that stuff, beyond the bare minimum needed to support the structure of the scene. So many of the names just sound like first-thought placeholder names that you use when writing because you dont want to lost momentum by getting hung up thinking of a 'good' name: Corncob TV, Jeffy Jeremy, Roy Donk, etc.

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 16:50 (two years ago)

there are certain words and phrases and images that pop up in different sketches as well, this might just be because they're words Tim Robinson finds funny, but it does kind of make it feel dreamlike, like your brain is cycling through the things you happened to see that day, and they pop up in random places - like the cigar in the driving crooner skit, and then the cigars on Will Forte's phone in the Ponytail sketch, or the various references to skeletons

A lot of the Tim Robinson sketches seen to be about people's fantasies, or the version of reality inside people's heads uncomfortably colliding with the real world, or the version of reality inside someone else's head - like the Bob odenkirk skit where the guy starts going on this elaborate revere Tim has to play along with, sketches where someone tried to transfer some elaborate idea from their mind to the real world and it's a disaster

the lady in the "banana breath" sketch is a specific archetype of employee that I suspect many of us have worked w/ (I definitely have), someone who is socially awkward and is treated like an outsider finally gets (extremely mild) acceptance from her peers and eventually pushes it overboard and blows all of that goodwill in 2 minutes.

in writers rooms, writing that kind of dialogue can often be a tedious chore, since it obv has no purpose other than to establish that the action takes place at a party, meeting, etc, but if you dont get it right it will sound weird and distracting.

there are lots sketches in this show where there's a familiar/bland format or situation and then they introduce some particular detail that is weird and/or overly specific, and distracts from everything else, and becomes the focus when it shouldn't be.

weird, oddly specific details feels like a feature of a lot of internet humour, the kind of details that you wouldn't include in a (competently written) work of fiction because they don't serve any purpose or are actively distracting, I think because a lot of internet humour is based on imitating weird stuff that real people post to the internet - blog posts or forum posts, or adverts and articles that are written by non-native English speakers, or stuff written by the mentally ill, or wikipedia articles with weird, intriguing, not fully explained asides. A lot of clickhole articles followed this format of familiar, bland format and then introducing weird, specific, not fully explained details.

stuff people share on the internet like screenshots of newspaper articles or non-fiction books with some weird details, I think that inspires a lot of this kind of humour

Yes, all sorts of little moments that went on to become ITYSL sketches - the nerdy guy wearing the same jacket (shirt brothers), the guy explaining that the droplets on his pants weren't pee (Calico Cut pants), etc. The episode where the revered Mort Crim agrees to do a commercial and turns out to be a loon must have inspired the sketch where Tim's burger gets housed by his old business professor.

I was using ChatGPT to help come up with some client outreach email templates, but I got bored and asked for a modification:

"modify to explain the economics of a system in which bones are money"

ChatGPT
Subject: Unveiling the "Boneconomy" - A New Way to Think About Currency

Hey [Client's Name],

I hope you're doing well! It's been a while since we last caught up, and I've been pondering something truly unique – the economics of a world where bones are the currency. Remember our previous discussions about innovative ideas?

Well, I wanted to reach out because we've been diving deep into this fascinating concept, and I believe there are some incredible insights to be gained from exploring the "Boneconomy."

Here's a quick rundown of this intriguing economic system:

The Boneconomy: In this imaginative world, bones have become the medium of exchange. Different types of bones, sizes, and conditions carry varying values. It's a system where your wealth is quite literally in your bones.
Economic Dynamics: Just like traditional economies, the "Boneconomy" has its own supply and demand dynamics. We've been studying how bone production, distribution, and the factors affecting bone value can create a unique economic ecosystem.
Success Stories: We've been researching examples of societies where bones became the currency, examining their economic growth, challenges, and innovations. It's a thought-provoking perspective on alternative monetary systems.
Exploring Possibilities: The "Boneconomy" raises intriguing questions about wealth distribution, sustainability, and economic inequality. What can we learn from this concept that might inform real-world economic discussions?
I'd love to reconnect and chat about this unconventional idea. If you have some time for a quick call or meeting in the coming weeks, it would be fantastic to explore the economic nuances of the "Boneconomy."

Feel free to reply to this email with your thoughts, or let me know your availability for a discussion. I'm excited to delve into this thought experiment with you and uncover what lessons it might hold for our understanding of economics.

Thanks for your interest in exploring innovative ideas together!

Warm regards,

otm, honestly the least realistic part of the chair plot is that he was actually able to make some progress on his quest. I take it for granted at this point that most consumer products are made by anonymous interchangeable impenetrable Chinese “companies” that barely have any employees or identity, let alone customer service, and that any attempt to interface with them beyond giving them money traps you in an ourobouros of frustration

frogbs, Thursday, 23 October 2025 15:23 (two months ago)

What's so refreshing is that unlike any number of characters/i think you should leave or even friendship roles he's played, in this series he's actually, despite all the cringe behavior and refusal to back down, somewhat competent. Both in his work and personal relations, and his unravelling of this mystery.

So for every time he does something really dumb that causes some really terrible response, he also figures something out! Or...doesn't mess up! When they cut away from that TV interview, what a relief that was.

dan selzer, Thursday, 23 October 2025 15:29 (two months ago)

Even in the first episode, when we’re expecting his speech to go off the rails, it goes just fine. Which makes the other stuff more unpredictable/fun.

the way out of (Eazy), Thursday, 23 October 2025 15:45 (two months ago)

i loved the little character detail in his interaction with his son, he gave him the stupid little plastic hat from his spy kit and his son reveals that he inherited his dad's instinct to try to smooth over awkward moments with absurd lies by immediately going like "oh yeah i've heard about these." and then he later has the hat attached to his bag like a keychain lol

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 23 October 2025 15:51 (two months ago)

Slightly funnier than that I believe the line was actually "oh yeah i've read about these" causing Tim's character to make a quick ??? face

Evan, Thursday, 23 October 2025 15:56 (two months ago)

lol yes that was it

please don't tell them that i brought my inside wheelbarrow outside

harper valley paul thomas anderson (voodoo chili), Thursday, 23 October 2025 16:51 (two months ago)

agree w/ everybody that Tim being a fully realized character helps a lot. like I read him as a guy who came up through the business world in the 90s and he's still stuck in that era so he finds himself immensely frustrated by how much the climate has changed. He's used to being able to be somewhat rude and stiff with employees and not hearing anything about it so he struggles to deal with daily hearing from them about his microaggressions.

but he's not like, one of those 'old man yells at cloud' guys either, he has an LGBTQ+ daughter that he is very supportive of, and he usually comes around when it comes to hurting his employees' feelings, he's just...a dude that can't accept that things don't work the way they're supposed to.

Like his anger about the chair breaking is the embarrassment, but it becomes more that he can't even talk to a human being that built the chair to tell them "your defective chair humiliated me", so he can't let it go because there SHOULD be someone to talk to.

think that makes everything land much more absurd. but his "huh?" squints keep sending me, like when he does it when they said there were people drinking at the lot and a high school teacher was there with his shirt off.

Edward Albee Sure (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 October 2025 16:56 (two months ago)

but I do also keep saying "oh that actor was in <x> skit". like when the HR meeting happened I started LOLing cos the Legal guy was the dude from the Carmine Laguzio sketch who kept getting frustrated that Tim wouldn't do the prank

Edward Albee Sure (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 October 2025 16:57 (two months ago)

What's so refreshing is that unlike any number of characters/i think you should leave or even friendship roles he's played, in this series he's actually, despite all the cringe behavior and refusal to back down, somewhat competent. So for every time he does something really dumb that causes some really terrible response, he also figures something out! Or...doesn't mess up! When they cut away from that TV interview, what a relief that was.

it also makes the entire premise pretty unique spin on a familiar angle, obviously there are tons of shows where the main dude is desperately trying to hide something but that's because it's illegal or a betrayal, here he's trying to hide what he's up to because he knows it'll expose him as a lunatic. even though he's clearly onto something and has physical evidence he can't exactly reveal why he decided to pursue it in the first place.

but yeah it definitely feels of a piece with all the ITYSL stuff - for one because of the theme of what people actually are *actually* thinking about when they're at work, for two the way he's constantly saying "this isn't normal! this is weird! what are they doing to us!??" and even though it makes him look insane deep down you know that he's at least partially right

frogbs, Thursday, 23 October 2025 17:05 (two months ago)

I read him as a guy who came up through the business world in the 90s

I don't think he's playing older than he is, and both Tim and I experienced the office culture of the early 00s and hmmm yeah

mh, Thursday, 23 October 2025 19:05 (two months ago)

or Tim's character and I had that experience, rather

mh, Thursday, 23 October 2025 19:05 (two months ago)

this is the day I found out that Tim Robinson is almost the exact same age as me and we were both less than a month apart

mh, Thursday, 23 October 2025 19:06 (two months ago)

i think he's def playing a little older than he is, just like in the itsyl sketch about robby starr of super starr records ("stop making people think they're stars!")

harper valley paul thomas anderson (voodoo chili), Thursday, 23 October 2025 19:24 (two months ago)

There's an interesting theme of responsibility running through this;
Not just the chair company being impervious to blame, but the mirror image where tr's somehow on the hook for teenagers getting drunk in a vacant lot, and the upskirt thing too...

m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Friday, 24 October 2025 10:51 (two months ago)

the football thing was great.

the drunk guy in the garage was basically just a different permutation of the "he CAN hit - at this price point" sketch

Edward Albee Sure (Neanderthal), Monday, 27 October 2025 14:25 (one month ago)

I recognized the hoarder guy as Bardia Salimi who appears in a bunch of Tony Zaret videos, including this one which def has the vibe of a ITYSL sketch

loving the chair company. like a more deranged combination of adam sandler’s characters in PDL and uncut gems

comrade jhøsh (k3vin k.), Friday, 31 October 2025 05:32 (one month ago)

Enjoying the show a lot so far. Probably not quite as funny as ITYSL or Friendship, but it still has some lols. I loved that shirt store employee - his delivery and odd dialogue gave me heavy The Room vibes

Vinnie, Monday, 3 November 2025 11:46 (one month ago)

last episode was more of a straight dramatic episode. it works in its favor, because the more serious they take it, the funnier things get, but they really made a good choice making the Jeep tour thing less a comedic aside and actually getting into why it was something he found important.

though the Jeep Tour ride cutaway was actually hilarious

excited that we may get a Don Bondarly episode next week

Edward Albee Sure (Neanderthal), Monday, 3 November 2025 15:04 (one month ago)

the flashbacks seem to indicate the family knows Ron's been mentally unbalanced for a while...the daughter looking at his location on the phone seems like a clear indication of how next week's episode is going to start but who knows with this show it throws so many curveballs

frogbs, Monday, 3 November 2025 15:08 (one month ago)

like no way do I think they've actually got the guy from the website

frogbs, Monday, 3 November 2025 15:08 (one month ago)

i feel like it's pretty obvious that what Tecca is covering up is obviously much more benign than what Tim thinks. I mean for a while you wondered if it was an unreliable narrator and only Ron was seeing things but now enough instances of other people having indirect involvement means the stuff that's happening is probably real, but all Tecca has done is low-level prank shit. they signed him up for shit under fake email addresses, sent a costumed hockey mask guy to his porch, paid some shitty, ineffective security guard to ding him in the head.

I feel like it'd be totally Tim Robinson for the final episode to reveal that they were hiding something that is very 'who cares' and he has to deal with the 'i wasted months of my life over this?', only to find out that someone else within Tecca was hiding something actually substantial that the other members of the board didn't know. actually I'd love it if the finale is just 60 minutes of bizarre revelation after revelation in escalating absurdity

Edward Albee Sure (Neanderthal), Monday, 3 November 2025 15:19 (one month ago)

probably just a bored Webmaster behind it all

Edward Albee Sure (Neanderthal), Monday, 3 November 2025 15:20 (one month ago)

"THIS guy beat me? wait, why do I care?"

Edward Albee Sure (Neanderthal), Monday, 3 November 2025 15:24 (one month ago)

yea Ron's theory obviously makes sense (and I think would square with the guy from last week being forced to work naked) but he's missing some pretty big pieces of evidence. he's clearly onto something though but yea I'd wager the truth is something far more bizarre than what he's expecting. in fact it clearly seems like two things are going on given the fridge landing on the co-worker whose name he used to check out the properly records despite "they" clearly knowing who Ron is but it could just be more misdirection

frogbs, Monday, 3 November 2025 15:37 (one month ago)

I have a feeling Roundball Rock sketch will factor into the finale somehow

frogbs, Tuesday, 4 November 2025 15:17 (one month ago)

didn't that last flashback suggest as much?

jaymc, Tuesday, 4 November 2025 15:20 (one month ago)

yeah it was implied she did that when she took his phone to look at it for a second

Edward Albee Sure (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 4 November 2025 15:28 (one month ago)

oh yeah I mean clearly he's lost his mind before but this is more of a paranoid goose chase so I'm guessing there's more to the Jeep tour story

frogbs, Tuesday, 4 November 2025 15:32 (one month ago)

that whole flashback made it pretty clear. He's on the floor of the garage talking to himself, his daughter's looking on worried, his wife tells her he just needs their support, in the same language that she gave him in the present day.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 4 November 2025 15:33 (one month ago)

right I'm wondering if there was a whole bunch of insanity that followed that scene in the garage, again maybe this is just me misremembering things but wasn't it mentioned that he returned to Fisher Robay two years ago? so there's still a couple years where we don't know what he's up to

frogbs, Tuesday, 4 November 2025 15:58 (one month ago)

for the final episode to reveal that they were hiding something that is very 'who cares' and he has to deal with the 'i wasted months of my life over this?'

wonder if the ending was a nod to the ITYSL sketch where Tim says we should be allowed to watch a *little* porn at work

still laughing at Mike going "oh she's beautiful" to every single woman on the "spot the difference" bar game

this episode reminded me of a Connor O'Malley sketch, it goes so far off the rails and changes directions every minute or so, it's too tense to make you want to laugh despite so much deeply funny shit going on at every turn

groovypanda, Tuesday, 11 November 2025 19:01 (one month ago)

don't wanna overstate it but that might be the most bonkers episode of anything I've ever seen, only comparison that comes to mind are certain scenes from S1 of True Detective

love how it planted so many seeds of future plotlines and did so much foreshadowing that you assume isn't going anywhere because it's done the bait and switch so many times before - will the video of Tim kissing another woman mean anything? or the fact that he's one bonk on the head away from brain damage? is whatever his boss needs to talk to him about gonna be anything relevant at all?

this was the most stressful episode yet and probably the most 'thrilling' one. and yet it was also weirdly straightforward in comparison to other episodes. enjoyed it immensely but also LOLed where at the end, we still have no idea what is going on, other than I'm more and more convinced a huge rugpull will eventually come in the finale.

Edward Albee Sure (Neanderthal), Monday, 17 November 2025 15:30 (one month ago)

at this point it kind of reminds me of movies like Vanilla Sky and Donnie Darko, there's so much weird shit compounding upon itself that it seems impossible to pull together a coherent explanation, outside of "whats happening isn't really happening", except this show has slowly revealed that every character is basically as insane as Ron is, save for maybe the wife and a couple of co-workers

frogbs, Monday, 17 November 2025 16:15 (one month ago)

comrade jhøsh (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 18 November 2025 19:17 (one month ago)

i wasn't sure what to make of that either, but the show tends to have some visible age gaps that make no sense, like ron's coworker who supposedly went to high school with him. one of the things i like about the show is it seems like when they have a choice between something that makes any rational sense and something that's funny they always go with funny

really hope they release the Red Ball Market Global song, it was so catchy. I wonder if anyone figured out that was Lou Diamond Phillips' voice

funniest bit of the show is when Ron is accosting the website designer outside the "Life of the Party class" and the dude knocks away his phone and he shouts HEY!! THATS MY PHONE!!

i'm just wrapping this up now, i have enjoyed it. it does feel like a sketch show thinly disguised as a narrative show but i don't mind, lots of great weirdos.
also nice to see lou diamond philips again, haven't seen that dude in forever.

in retrospect I do find it interesting that the advance screenings didn't show the finale. maybe that's just because they didn't want to risk the big twists getting spoiled but I wondered if how E8 went was dependent on whether or not the show got picked up for another season. because the 7th episode felt like it should've been the finale but obviously the show is too weird to let that happen
