Bad Religion - Stranger Than Fiction. It's ok.
large vocabulary = plus
seriousness = minus

Miss Laura, Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Clicks & Cuts 2. It's the only thing which gets me through a big pile of marking.

alext (alext), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Today I have listened to the first CD of the Guns'N'Roses live album, the Phlistines Jr "Sinking of the SS Danehower" and Swan Dive "Words you Whisper".

(i am back from my ilx break, almost 4 days, not bad)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Demo CD of my friends' band. I'm actually covering for one of them today and he left it in his desk drawer with a post-it asking what I thought. I can't be at all objective though because it's them.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Dirrty (as always).

Graham (graham), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

''(i am back from my ilx break, almost 4 days, not bad)''

just four days jel! when you posted that thread, i thought it would be four months!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep meaning to put on the free CD that came with the Wire.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

dude, I did say a week or so! But still yeah, that thread might have sounded more dramatic than I intended.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

PJ Harvey, Nick Drake, Smog, Throwing Muses, the Cranes...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 7 November 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Jane Siberry, Sugababes, the new Roni Size, Daniel Bedingfield, Fleetwood Mac.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Grupo Niche. Last night I was struck by just how effective that jazzy little break near the middle of "Han Cogido la Cosa."

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Neko Case - Blacklisted is about to get replaced by Summeteeth ot Drukqs depending on how much the coffee starts to kick in.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

This morning i was listening to Teenage Fanclub's debut "A Catholic Education". I discovered from the little booklet that come with it that there'll be lots of Fire Records re-releases soon: Telstar Ponies, Pastels, Close Lobsters, Jazz Butcher Conspiracy.....

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Today I am listening to 6 Music. At the moment it's For Tomorrow by Blur. I've never listened to this channel before, but it seems OK. I'd be listening to Virgin, my manager's choice, if it hadn't conked out earlier on hahahahahaha.

Last night I listened to Me & Julio... by Paul Simon over and over again, prompted by a repeat viewing of the Royal Tenenbaums.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

alice coltrane - a monastic trio. then it'll be cupid & psyche 85 i suspect.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Lemon Jelly, QOTSA, Levitation, Ella Fitzgerald.

Plus, oh thank you co-worker, Coldplay.

I think I'm going to start a Coldplay tribute band called 'Plaintive'.

Alfie (Alfie), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Just call it 'Suckfest'

Right now, a Damon and Naomi album, which I knew from ten seconds in would cause Kris to smash things if he was here. But he is not. Definitely works better when nobody is singing, I think.

Otherwise my CD carrying case appears to hold the new Mudhoney, the first Spirit album, Kahimi Karie, Minmae (the band not the Robotech imp), Soul Oddity and Dusty Springfield. This works.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus Lizard
Naked Raygun
Major Stars
and the awful sounds of "Hello my name is___" and "No this is not a sales call" at work *sigh*

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Just call it 'Suckfest'

I quite like 'Coldsick' or 'Coldtwat' too.

What's the new Mudhoney album like, Ned? I like the what I've heard of Kahimi Karie, I'd like to get hold of 'K.K.K.K.K.' but I've yet to find a copy in London.

Alfie (Alfie), Thursday, 7 November 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll let you know soon enough, I was about to listen to that Mudhoney now. And the Karie I have is that KKKKK one, but Momus doubtless could say more. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 November 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

A-ha's Minor Earth Major Sky because I am predictable.

liz! (liz!), Thursday, 7 November 2002 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Freq Nasty, I tired myself out earlier dancing to it, I think breaks is my favourite music for dancing to.

Also X-Press 2-Muzik X Press, which I found on an old cd of mp3s. Earlier on I listened to U Know How We Do by Mount Sims which I really really love at the moment.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 7 November 2002 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Durand Duran - Rio, which I bought for a dollar on Saturday.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I listened to Boa Morte's "Soon it Will Come Time to face the world Outside" this morning. I will be doing my first ever band interview with them in a few days, and am quite nervous, but that's another story in and of itself.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Horace Andy.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Oddly enough I was listening to Liege and Lief this morning too (well a snatch of it). Then Vertex by Buck 65. Then I came to work and turned my ears off.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 7 November 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I brought with me to the office today:
the montgolfier brothers - the world is flat
Sandy Salisbury - Falling to Pieces (so another fairport)
Fairport Convention - Full House

velocity girl - gilded stars and zealous hearts.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 November 2002 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Q Lazarus "Goodbye horses" has been the ONLY song I have listened to since the thread of a few days ago finally informed me of it.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 7 November 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

how do you know, Graham?

Right now I'm listening to Apples in Stereo's "Discovery of a World inside the moone"...specifically "the bird that you can't see".

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 7 November 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Today it's been nothing but VH1 Classic.

Last night I listened to:

Justin Timberlake - Justified
Luomo - Vocalcity (just like Mark P!)
Liars - They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top
DJ Sammy's "Boys of Summer"
Scissor Sisters' "Comfortably Numb"

and at my rehearsal, we worked on Mozart's Vesperae Solennes.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 7 November 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Scissor Sisters' "Comfortably Numb"

This, I must say, is awe-inspiring in its own way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 November 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's tops. I mean, the original is so silly in its own right, it was just SCREAMING for a campy disco treatment.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 7 November 2002 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

ah Mark you don't quite understand the territory yet: Graham *wants to believe* that Ricky is lying, as immature children like him always do when people on the centre-left express an affinity with what the student-wanker mindset denounces as crypto-Tory.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 7 November 2002 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Today, I've been listening to a work colleague gripe about his job and my other colleagues ;-(

I'm now off to listen to Miss Dynamite.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 7 November 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Attica Blues Band
Scape comilation
New Manual Album
Thomas Brinkman

Ed (dali), Thursday, 7 November 2002 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots -- which, if not for that horrendous Pt. 2 of the title track, would easily be in my top 3 of the year. [Resounding chorus of replies from everyone: "But The Soft Bulletin was better, you big silly!"] Also listened to Internal Wrangler and I'm starting to think that "Goodnight Georgie" is their best song EVAR.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 7 November 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yesterday I started mixing down some tracks I recorded with a whole different singer other than me, so I’ve been listening to the rough versions of those today at work. I’m rather excited about them. On the way to work I listened to a tape of about half of the Tok Tok vs Soffy O album, and then the radio for a bit: “Lose Yourself,” “Hot in Herre,” and a sort of faceless hip-hop track that I don’t know the name of. On the way home I’m either going to listen to Bauhaus or the Monochrome Set; when I get home again I’m going to listen to Legowelt (Klaus Kinski EP) and DMX Krew (Fffrrreeessshhh) and then attempt to fix up the stuff I was recording, which I seem to have edited quite poorly the first time around.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 7 November 2002 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

lots of new rap,
Missy Elliot - Under Construction
Erick Sermon - React
Ms. Jade - Girl Interrupted
and then
Noriko tujiko - Hard ni sasete
FS Blumm - Mondkuchen
Miss Kittin - Electroclash mix for Muzak

Honda (Honda), Thursday, 7 November 2002 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Currently now listening to that Minmae collection. So nice. The Mudhoney was enjoyable enough noise, the Kahimi Karie about what I expected but quite good for that reason!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 November 2002 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Juliana Hatfield - Hey Babe

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 7 November 2002 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Rainy is lovely and dependable.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 7 November 2002 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Right now I'm listening to a jam by the Monday Orchestra from 1976. Before this I was listening to the New Music Co-Op. (All stuff I'm transferring to CD for work.) From 1-2:30 I was listening to an undergrad improv class work on a piece I'm writing for them. In my morning class I heard some Perotin and some Puccini.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 7 November 2002 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

it's joke-rock day today, so i've got 'great truckin' songs of the renaissaince' by tism; the moldy peaches record; a frogs mix cd lovingly compiled by a buddy; the dead milkmen's 'death rides a pale cow' compile and 'some call it godcore' by half man half biscuit.

angelo (angelo), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Kitchens Of Distinction ~ Love Is Hell. Ya know, its funny. I was all over this back when it came out, now...not so much. I remembered it better then it was. Strange.

Lucky Cat has been getting heavy spins lately. Its a very beautiful album that took its time to warm up to me. I like it, alot.

Juan (Juan), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Woman's Hour Serial: Ladies of Letters Log On" with Patricia Routlegde and Prunella Scales. BBC cassettes.

minna (minna), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been listening to S Club Jr- "Automatic High", and "New Direction" everyday for the last couple weeks.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 8 November 2002 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But today also I've been listening to all the mp3s from the links on this thread:

who here actually makes music?

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 8 November 2002 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this generic "nu divas" CD compilation (it's even called that, "nu divas"), it has "slave 4U" (np!), "hit em up style", "no scrubs", a decent sheryl crow song, + a bunch of really terrible stuff. also been listening to the 'clean' (RUDE!) version of "the Marshall Mathers LP" & the P!nk album (i'm not at my own house, did you guess that)(they belong to s., she is 14)

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Friday, 8 November 2002 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

This exact second it's the Manic's Forever Delayed (which I just got).

Also have right here the Flaming Lips one Nate just mentioned - it's not out of it's plastic yet though.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 8 November 2002 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I listened to the entire "Tilt" album by Scott Walker when I woke up; then I went to the dentist for an hour an a half and the radio there played John Rowles, and then "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" oh there's bad lyrics galore. But I actually felt a bit embarrassed when the lines about cocksucking and so on with these two dentist people looming over me.

spectra, Friday, 8 November 2002 05:29 (twenty-three years ago)

SNAP! Kim. "Everything Must Go" - right at this particular moment.

gazza, Friday, 8 November 2002 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

furt- field recordings. a live electronics duet recorded in 1994. a 'mindfuck' in a good way, me thinks.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 8 November 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

last night: OLE ELO and a bit of Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy

Jeff W, Friday, 8 November 2002 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm listening to FatNick and Brazen Hussies stuff off the web. At the same time. One using Real and the other using WinAmp. It sounds fucking horrible. I'm sure they're both lovely alone.

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 8 November 2002 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

sigur ros - ()

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 8 November 2002 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

The Missy album, the Trina album, the Bedingfield album, the Timberlake album all in a pile by my bed but what's actually going on now is Disc 1 of Trojan's X-Rated box set.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Galleon-So I Begin, over and over and over, when you put a good french house song in winamp and it starts again at the end it should sound like the song never ends. And it does sound like that.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 November 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Philip Oakey/Giorgio Moroder, s/t (I suppose) Lp. I'm still doing this tape, it takes me some time.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 8 November 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Sodastream, Fiona Apple, Camera Obscura and some mental Scottish play on radio four about someone trying to open a pub on an island, but the locals keep drinking the bouze before it opens. grebt.

alix (alix), Friday, 8 November 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Listening:

Clairvoyantss - Your New Boundries
Jawbox - (Pretty much everything)

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 8 November 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm at work right now but last night i listened to:
"the present lover" luomo
"love was made for two" data 80
"making it whistle" thomas fehlmann
"mit dir" jurgen paape
"installation" akufen
"secondhand sounds" herbert
"immer" michael mayer.

spot the pattern.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 8 November 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i've bought a number of CDs over the last few weeks but I threw out my CD player/stereo when i moved so I've been relying on what I alreeady had on minidisc. Right now I am listening to Lemonjelly Lost Horizons for the first time on my Mac at work.

Last night I had a delirious time listening to Pet Shop Boys "Please" as loud as poss on my MD as i travelled home in a state of half ruin. I am sure I was probably singing along in that annoying way people have when wearing headphones. HAHA.

I was thinking of doing a Taking Sides: Pet SHop Boys "Please" v Human Leauge "Dare". I was drunk like I say.

Alan (Alan), Friday, 8 November 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

today i am mostly listening to what i have been listening to all week, ie. Ladytron, the Ramones, Tarwater, the Buffy musical, new band demos that we did last weekend, Futurism 2 and my boss wittering on and on and on...

katie (katie), Friday, 8 November 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

what's futurism 2 like, katie?

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 8 November 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm listening to a CD I got free with Q magazine coz my minidisc isn't unpacked yet after my move and I slept in this morning and forgot my CD's!

Plinky (Plinky), Friday, 8 November 2002 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

um. futurism 2 is a bit monotonous TBH. it has its moments, but godammit it could do with a few tempo changes! i can't quite decide whether i like this vaguely disco/80s thing that most of the records seem to have going on in it... also there are some FILTHY lyrics!

katie (katie), Friday, 8 November 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks katie. i love 'futurism' but i get the feeling that 'futurism 2' shouldn't be at the top of my wants list what with all the other shiny electropop i need to catch up on! and you're right, some of these types need to wash their mouths out.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 8 November 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

It's better filthy.

alix (alix), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

b) Tonight Tonight - The Smashing Pumpkins

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 9 November 2002 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just listening to Beatlemania! With the Beatles. It's a little surprising to realize how unfamiliar a lot of the early Beatles is compared to the later stuff. It's actually more exciting now. I think the vocals might be better.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 9 November 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

When I first woke up, disc 4 of the Velvet Underground box set was still playing from when I'd fallen asleep with it on the night before. Then while I took my exercise, I listened to some rubbitch free CD that came with Uncut, which was all old blues choons that Keef Richards had ripped off. (The only one I liked was the Ike and Tina track.) When I get bored and go back in my room, I will listen to the Greatest Hits of the Crystals.

kate, Saturday, 9 November 2002 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Justin Robertson-Bugged Out Mix.

I had the new drum & bass remix version of Adam F's last album earlier, then onto the Trojan Instrumentals Box Set (gradually getting through the 15 I bought...). Oh, and Missy's new single, which is terrific, though I am not quite as thrilled by it as most ILXers seem to be.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 9 November 2002 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

also heard mimeo- the hands of caravaggio.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 9 November 2002 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 9 November 2002 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Claire and H should be number this week!

The Westlife song is GOOD, a clear 8 out of 10 in a focus group. "This love is unbreakable..."

I am listening to Finders Keepers: The Invictus Anthology, the new three-CD Chairmen of the Board comp, which is absolutely fantastic. Had a bit of the Streets earlier, as well as the rest of that Trojan Instrumentals set.

Right now the Czars' The Ugly People vs. the Beautiful People. Slowcore meets country meets a hint of Cocteaus = great. Beats the hell out of Coldplay, that's for sure.

Just made a compilation for a mate in return for him sending me and MD of Sprtlzd. It started with Gillian Welch and then headed off through N*E*R*D, Manitoba, Cornelius, Cocteau Twins, Richard Hawley, Kate Bush, Mouse On Mars, Morphine, Mark Hollis and many other wonderful things (well, another five or six wonderful things that have already evaporated from my faltering brane). I am now despairing at daytime TV and contemplating luncheon. Toasted french bread with beans, cheese and stuffness, I think.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 30 May 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Adolescent's Orquesta (compilation), Steely Dan Two Against Nature*, N*E*R*D In Search of* (I don't imagine I'm going to like this), Todo Tango* (Not liking what I've heard so far--I don't know why I want to get into tango any, as I can't afford lessons right now), Prince and the NPG Diamonds & Pearls* (I don't even remember this coming out, not that I have followed Prince very closely), the Ramones on college radio, and then some post-punk sounding stuff on another college radio station, and then back to the first college radio station which was now playing blues--so I decided to put on a Samira Tewfic debka CD I haven't heard for a while, and I definitely liked it more than anything else I'd been listening to, despite its weaknesses. Now listening to a Sabah CD I haven't listened to for a while. (But some of these songs remind me of eating tahini sauce made with old tahini paste, an unpleasant assocation I have with this particular CD.)

Right now, Warda singing Sayeed Mekawy's "Aoukati be Tehlaou." The instrumental introducion is quite wonderful, even with all the string section that's ubiquitous in this sort of music. There's a lot of other stuff going on instrumentally. This is a really good song. I'm no longer a big fan of Warda's singing though, and Sayeed Mekawy isn't quite a good enough singer to do it justice either, and neither is George Wassouf. I wish I could hear some other singer cover this. I wish I could like Warda more, since I have a zillion recordings by her, but there's something missing for me in her singing.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 31 May 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The ney in combination with these rhythms is heavenly.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 31 May 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually Sayed Mekkawy does a better job of singing it, even if his voice has more technical weaknesses.
