I liked 'Moonlight', a lot, but best of the decade?! Get outtahere. And that's the least of my problems w/ this list. ILX can do better.

would prefer it was all midbrow trash rather than including a film as good as no home movie amongst some of this shit
― devvvine, Monday, 22 July 2019 21:49 (six years ago)
must watch The Arbor, The Illusionist (2010), Sunset Song, The Handmaiden, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Personal Shopper, The Wind Rises again at some point - but most of that top 10 is rank overrated shit.
― calzino, Monday, 22 July 2019 21:51 (six years ago)
Not down with The Master ranking anywhere other than dead last among PTA movies of the last decade.

― devvvine, Tuesday, 23 July 2019 21:53 (six years ago)
I saw that earlier today and was trying to find an applicable thread...I never care what is #1 on these lists (panel lists, anyway--I'm interested when it's one writer: Hoberman, Edelstein, Kael or Sarris or Kauffmann if they put one together from the grave), what I think is missing, etc.; their interest is seeing films I liked get some notice. So from this list, I enjoy seeing At Berkely, The Turin Horse, Frances Ha, Eden, Margaret, Boyhood, O.J.: Made in America, The Social Network, and Inside Llewyn Davis.

They are.
― Pauline Male (Eric H.), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:26 (six years ago)
Or we are.
Moonlight isn't a great movie, but it's good enough, and worth inclusion. We tend to forget breakthrough queer films starring African Americans deserve boosting. I screened it yesterday for students, and it impressed them. We had a good chat about its cinematography, narrative, and sound design.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:28 (six years ago)
Boost away. Anyone who says it's the best of the last ten years is not serious.
― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:32 (six years ago)
I expect the polls casting wider nets will push The Tree of Life into that #1 spot in the end.
― Pauline Male (Eric H.), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:34 (six years ago)
(xpost) Not to get semantic, but it's a poll--it's a bunch of people saying it's one of the best.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:43 (six years ago)
I.e., they don't, that I can see, link to individual lists, but it's possible not one of the eleven contributors listed it at #1--it may have just had most of them putting it reasonably high on their lists.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:48 (six years ago)
A colleague of mine seems pretty convinced this list wasn't to the letter collaborative and I partially agree.
― Pauline Male (Eric H.), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:50 (six years ago)
Meaning someone was allowed to re-order it with readership, etc. in mind, like Rolling Stone and other publications do?
I think with lists like these, voters often use their #1 slot for quirkier, more personal choices. I can see where something like Moonlight would have broad support without even getting close to a #1 vote.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:54 (six years ago)
Yeah, it feels a bit like the editor railroaded some titles up (or on the list in the first place). But, all's fair in list-bait.

― Funky Isolations (jed_), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 16:58 (six years ago)
Eh, I think the pedantic thing to say would be that it actually had its Greek premiere at the 2010 Thessaloniki Film Festival, so by the rules guiding most of the ILX film polls it's eligible.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 20:37 (six years ago)
that was my criterion ;)
― Funky Isolations (jed_), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 21:49 (six years ago)
I don't seem to have rated a single contemporary film as 5/5 since joining Letterboxd 5 (?) years ago, and can't recall one I might from '10-14 (Certified Copy could come close).
So that's my current position: I've seen zero great films this decade.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/from-joker-to-trump-the-2020-oscars-are-going-to-be-totally-insane-is-it-time-to-tune-out
The 2020 Oscars Will Be a Politically Divided Sh*tshow
The Oscars are cynical awards dressed in the guise of earnestness, which is what the people most vocally critical about them—from far-right news outlets to Marvel fans—miss entirely. Whether the awarded films are “the best” or not is beside the point. The Oscars are a television spectacle that mostly function as a marketing opportunity for large corporations. And these corporations have financial reasons to be concerned about ratings, which is why, every year, we hear about them.
...
Still, great filmmakers can—and have, and must—achieve greatness without the Oscars. Limitations in resources do not necessarily deprive a film of quality, which the history of film can easily attest to. Directors like Shirley Clark, Euzhan Palcy, Elaine May, Vera Chytilová, Bill Gunn, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Ousmane Sembène, Cheryl Dunye, and Julie Dash made their work anyway and whether we see their films or not is partly up to us—our own curiosity and love for art that is imaginative and doesn’t simply “make you think,” as the trite saying goes, but thinks itself. And as for superhero films, they will undoubtedly continue to get made and distributed to your local multiplexes and chosen streaming services; whether there’s any shame in consuming them will always be both a political and personal consideration.

top 20 is pretty good except for inclusion of that and Social Network... also only about 2.5 non-English-lang films. Try harder.

Not enthusiastic about The Master, The Social Network, or Boyhood. Outside of that, top 20's fine or better.

Fury Road is *not* a better film than Mad Max II, and anyone claiming that was The Film of the Decade in 1989 would've been told to collect their toys and get on the school bus.

some films that I haven’t seen on any consensus lists (outside of genre lists) so far, but hoping some will show up on the Film Comment list:

I don't know why I don't like it more, in retrospect. I ought to prefer its lack of, shall we say, moral seriousness.
― temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Monday, 18 November 2019 19:46 (six years ago)
It's trying to be morally serious though, in a woefully misjudged way.
― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 November 2019 19:48 (six years ago)
Dan S's list is a large part of the reason this was a good decade for cinema. Also Jafar Panahi, Corneliu Porumboiu, Amour Fou, A Quiet Passion, Play, Lav Diaz, Pablo Larrain. The focus on American men is understandable, the same as always, but I'm surprised how old the directors on most of those lists are. George Miller, Terence Malick, especially. But how many will claim Coen, PTA, Linklater, made their best works this decade? Ok, perhaps Linklater.
― Frederik B, Monday, 18 November 2019 20:19 (six years ago)

and tut-tutting an AV Club list is classic Morbius. This ain't Film Comment -- if they can preach about Uncle Bonmee, they've done a service (though it's not my Apitchapong pick this decade).

I thought I Hated PTA in the 2000s but Inherent Vice and Phantom Thread introduced the lighter touch that the enhanced interrogation technique called Punch Drunk Love couldn't fathom.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 November 2019 22:37 (six years ago)
Fully intend to give Punch Drunk Love another chance despite it having what I'm pretty confident is the worst P.S. Hoffman performance ever.

xps: Climax could have been better if the 15 minute sequence of 2 and 3 part improvs that painted every character in a negative light were dropped. After that, I saw the rest as a morality play where justice was dealt.
I've decided that inclusion of Upstream Color and Under the Skin is my litmus test for critical lists of the decade. I've returned to both regularly.

is the remake worth a watch? i really liked the original but kinda assumed there was no point to the remake except to sell a proven commodity to an anglo audience.

I don't.

I didn't find time to watch the remake, but it's probably good. My mom liked it.
― Frederik B, Monday, 2 December 2019 23:05 (six years ago)
I liked the original, but in the context of American film it's cool we can still get a subtle, unhurried character study of a woman navigating life's valleys and occasional peaks -- with a little sex in it.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 December 2019 23:07 (six years ago)
Sure, sure. I just really don't care about that context :)
Latin American cinema has been really great with those subtle studies of middle aged women, btw. Gloria, Las Herederas (which might still be on Netflix), and The Desert Bride.

Out of curiosity and undiagnosed disorder, I aggregated a meta-list of the decade-end lists here and on that fimoculous link with 50 or more titles. You won't like this.
13 mentions: Mad Max: Fury Road12: Boyhood, Inside Llewyn Davis, Moonlight, The Master11: Get Out, The Social Network10: Call Me by Your Name, Frances Ha, Her, Phantom Thread, The Act of Killing/The Look of Silence, The Tree of Life, The Wolf of Wall Street, Under the Skin9: 12 Years a Slave, Burning, First Reformed, Holy Motors, Inception, Lady Bird, Roma, The Grand Budapest Hotel8: A Separation, Carol, Inside Out, Melancholia, Parasite7: Elle, Force Majeure, La La Land, O.J.: Made in America, Shoplifters, The Handmaiden, Toni Erdmann6: A Ghost Story, Amour, Before Midnight, Certified Copy, Drive, Dunkirk, Hereditary, High Life, Leviathan, Manchester by the Sea, Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood, Paddington 2, Phoenix, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Tangerine, The Florida Project, The Lobster, Whiplash, You Were Never Really Here5: American Honey, Annihilation, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Valentine, Bridesmaids, Gone Girl, Green Room, Inherent Vice, Margaret, Only Lovers Left Alive, Spring Breakers, Stories We Tell, The Duke of Burgundy, The Favourite, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, Upstream Color4: 20th Century Women, Black Panther, Cameraperson, Dogtooth, Eighth Grade, Faces Places, If Beale Street Could Talk, It Follows, John Wick, Magic Mike XXL, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, No Home Movie, Personal Shopper, Silence, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Babadook, The Revenant, The Turin Horse, The Witch, What We Do in the Shadows, Zero Dark Thirty3: Beasts of the Southern Wild, Birdman, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Cold War, Ex Machina, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Good Time, Gravity, Her Smell, Ida, Jackie, Logan, Minding the Gap, Moonrise Kingdom, Mother!, Nightcrawler, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Selma, Sing Street, Son of Saul, Sorry to Bother You, Spotlight, Stranger By The Lake, Swiss Army Man, Take Shelter, The Farewell, The Great Beauty, The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z, The Raid: Redemption, The Rider, The Souvenir, The Wind Rises, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Weekend, Your Name, Zama
Having perused all these, I'm pleased by how much the appraisal of Boyhood and The Revenant has fallen, and the growing appreciation of Under the Skin, Holy Motors, The Duke of Burgundy, and Take Shelter; disappointed by the lesser recognition of Zama, The Witch, Nocturama and Timbuktu, perplexed by the admiration of High Life and Annhilation, Swiss Army Man, and angry that film critics would mention Last Jedi and Inception in the vicinity of a canonical list. And I think I need to see Phoenix and The Immigrant.

also re: Hoberman’s list, I think Christian Marclay’s 48 War Movies is really interesting, but if I’m going to vote for a video art installation it’s going to be Lisa Reihana’s In Pursuit of Venus (Infected) or JR’s The Chronicles of San Francisco

xp: Margaret and Stranger by the Lake have appeared on a few of these retrospective lists. Alfred's list is pretty unique in highlighting Poetry, Girlhood, Being 17, Love and Friendship, Love is Strange, In Jackson Heights, The Ornithologist, In The Family, The Other Side of Hope, Ava, BPM (Beats Per Minute), Inside Job, Of Gods and Men, Barbara, and The Ghost Writer.
Of Gods and Men should be appearing on most of these lists, IMO.

I had to go back and check and, indeed, nearly everything that won a Golden Globe last year went on to win the Oscar -- Green Book, Cuaron, Malek, Coleman, Ali, King, Green Book's screenplay, "Shallow" for song, Spider-Verse for animated, Roma for foreign film. The only single miss was First Man for original score.

The Body Remembers... is on Netflix, at least in Canada. I suspect Anne at 13,000 Ft will make some waves when it makes the rounds theatrically next year. (I haven't seen it but ppl I trust loved it, and it earns automatic points for its 75-minute runtime.)

Classic industry awards gravitating toward the wrong middlebrow candidates. Ergo...
I know CLEMENCY is neither widely seen nor easy to watch, but to those who have, Alfre Woodard's near no-show in this year's awards season so far looks close to absurd: no American actor this year is working at a higher level of detail, complexity and emotional intuition.— Guy Lodge (@GuyLodge) December 11, 2019

Harriet, many have been quick to point out, actually made a fairly large chunk of change. More than any other best actress candidate outside of Lupita, so far.
This feels early this year:

8. “Support the Girls” (2018)If you sought this movie out after learning that Regina Hall was voted best actress by the New York Film Critics Circle for her work in it, you’d see that she delivers a gutsy, lived-in performance as the general manager of a restaurant called Double Whammies — and that Haley Lu Richardson also excels as the most devil-may-care of the waitresses. Yet the movie, directed by Andrew Bujalski, looks like what would have happened if Jonathan Demme had been the showrunner of an ’80s sitcom. The local-tavern-version-of-Hooters setting is never convincing (it’s “Cheers” with a pinch of downscale desperation), and though critics praised the sisterly solidarity of it, the filmmaking is too ramshackle to lend the empowerment much power.
MY HERO! THANK YOU!

Godard has never had it out for Muslims. if anything, he has an Israel problem...The Image Book is an enormously empathetic and heartfelt film. "moral fault was merged with state crimes"Its critique of the Middle East "lacking a territory," a place to express themselves outside of throwing bombs, this is of course a naive reductionbecause when Godard says "if you ask me I will always be on the side of those who throw bombs," he sounds like the radical chic blowhard he was in '68-'72. But this film is more humble and open than any of that stuff. it's not a didactic film, it's 84 minutes inside the mind of a man at the end of his life. and he admits he knows nothing, all he has left is hope, "a necessary utopia." it's so beautiful
― flappy bird, Monday, 30 December 2019 17:47 (six years ago)
I only made it through like 14 minutes of The Image Book, presumably because I'm a huge dumbass
― The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 30 December 2019 18:05 (six years ago)
devvv had a good comment on letterboxd about Image Book, m/l it works as a pure light and sound show. I mean obviously ymmv but I think the pure flow of the film's images and sounds itself is what makes it so beautiful, compared to Ici et Ailleurs or Numero Deux, much more programmatic and willfully difficult films. I haven't read Finnegans Wake but it feels like the only proper comparison.

the quietness and overwhelming grayness and emptiness of tone, long hypnotic circling tracking shots, shunning of the most violent elements of the story, specific blurring or highlighting of background images, grim determination of characters, subtly hopeful ending - it was all so hypnotic and beautiful

Dennis Lim tries to sort out the decade:
Presenting his work at a film at Lincoln Center retrospective in 2018, Christian Petzold railed against a type of festival film he described as “the lemon-tree movie.” This would, as Petzold derisively imagines it, involve two lovers, one Palestinian and one Israeli, their star-crossed romance represented by a lemon tree situated right on the Gaza-Israel border. (He may have had in mind an actual Israeli movie called Lemon Tree, which has a somewhat different plot but uses similar botanical symbolism.) Anyone who has sampled even a sliver of contemporary world cinema will recognize this species of “subject movie,” to use Petzold’s term. These are films that are relentlessly about something: laden with sociopolitical import, allowing for a touch of lyricism but very little ambiguity, and bearing the telltale traces of the screenwriting workshop.
Petzold’s example gets at a rarely spoken truth about the film-industrial complex. While distinctive work is emerging all the time, especially on the margins, and therefore easy to overlook, many of the institutions that determine what gets made and shown still function as forces of homogenization, from film schools to the funding bodies and development labs that are sometimes attached to the very festivals that serve as showcases for the end results of this often highly professionalized process. Ours is an age of fatiguing overload but also of numbing sameness: too many movies, too many festivals, too many reviews, too many opinions, too many lists, too many hot takes and think pieces that turn complicated issues into cultural talking points and empty posturing—all of which amount not to a lively discourse but a reinforcement of conventional wisdom (or worse)....
The brave new world of digital streaming promises instant access, but choice is a pernicious myth when entire swathes of cinema are conveniently forgotten or actively suppressed (as is happening with Disney’s continued withholding of 20th Century Fox titles from repertory theaters). Everything is market-tested, only for us to be told that what people want is more of the same. The late-capitalist logic is seamless: what we get is not, as advertised, plenitude, but its precise opposite, a narrowing of options to an algorithmically determined menu and a simultaneous impression that no other options exist.

My main glitches with Jojo is that I think the whole Wes Anderson look is a little played and the trailer/marketing really kneecapped it. Its conceit isn't as affecting/smart as, say, Transit, but I think for a middlebrow movie that tackled a serious thing, it looks great and is funny and is emotional without being bathetic.
