Yes folks it's time for the long-awaited animated series ballot poll. This is the nomination thread.

Nomination Eligibility Requirements

All nominated works must be animated, using any technique, traditional or computer-aided, including but not limited to hand-drawn, cel, stop-motion, rotoscoping, motion capture, and 3-D. For works which combine animation and live action, the work is only eligible if episodes consist mostly of animated material; works where an animated character accompanies a live action cast do not qualify.

Nominated works must be episodic, that is, an episodic program originally produced for television, home video, Flash, streaming video, or something like it. Animated shorts from Disney, Warner Bros., Fleischer, etc were eligible in the previous poll and therefore "Looney Tunes" and "Merrie Melodies" are not relevant nominations here.

Some properties have generated multiple related series. I'll decide whether to aggregate nominations if it comes up. If you want to argue that Justice League and Justice League Unlimited should be considered together you can do that.

Nominate by posting in this thread! If there's any ambiguity as to what a show title might mean give a link or something. Nominations will close…eventually.

I'd greatly appreciate the participation of a rollout collaborator; if you want to help make images and post things in a timely fashion in a month or two, let me know.

Yeah!

I have enjoyed me many a cartoon in my day.

To help prove this contention, here, for the delectation of the ilx audience, I shall transcribe from memory all the lyrics to the theme for 'Felix the Cat' cartoons:

Felix the Cat, the wonderful, wonderful cat!
Whenever he gets in a fix
He reaches into his bag of tricks.

Felix the Cat, the wonderful, wonderful cat!
You'll laugh so hard your sides will ache,
Your heart will go pit-a-pat,
Watching Felix the Cat, the wonderful cat!
---------------

ftr, Felix the Cat was horribly unfunny, but I watched it anyway, because any cartoon was a treat.

Coelacanth Green (Leee), Friday, 26 July 2019 19:37 (six years ago)

Whoops, sorry, I see Hilda and Steven Universe were already nommed.

Steven Universe will probably be my #1, even though it hasn't even ended yet. It's just been so amazing to watch something so imaginative, life-affirming and beautifully queer on mainstream television. It's my favourite TV series of this decade, cartoon or non-cartoon.

Tuomas, Friday, 26 July 2019 19:43 (six years ago)

And Avatar the Last Airbender was probably my favourite series, cartoon or non-cartoon, of the previous decade. The last 15 years or so have been great for US cartoons with progressive themes.

Tuomas, Friday, 26 July 2019 19:48 (six years ago)

I worked on one of the masterpieces of shit — it was called Turbo Teen, about a guy who turned into a car. Not just any car, it was a big muscle car. And the people who wrote that show were such jackasses that ... I remember there was one character who was dancing at a dance in one scene, and this guy called out, “Get it down, Jack!” — the writer evidently couldn't quite remember if it was “Get it on” or “Get down,” and then to just give this ‘80s show an authentic '50s touch, “Jack!” It was just so sad! [Laughter.] Somebody brought in an anti-drug pamphlet that showed on the cover a horribly deformed baby whose head looked like a wad of silly putty that had been mangled, and John hung it up on the door and had it saying, "Oh no, I'm turning into Turbo Teen!" That summed it up nicely.

Okay true and I know this will go nowhere, but for a brief moment in the mid '80s, I was definitely going to grow up to be Jana of the Jungle. So...Jana of the Jungle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jana_of_the_Jungle

Also apparently I was so into the cartoon The New Shmoo that for the next decade this one bread recipe my mom made, which involved rolling out a blobby shape, was known in my family as "Shmoo bread."

No worries, shouldn't be too hard to dedupe. I will collate nominations to date sometime by the end of this coming weekend, present the list so far, and then set a nomination deadline for stragglers at that time. Glad there's so much interest! This is gonna be a tough poll to really find time to seek out things new-to-me before casting votes. If it seems interesting to do so I will try to prepare sub-rankings of British and anime series.

there's really not enough anime nominated itt

Mordy, Monday, 29 July 2019 20:46 (six years ago)

i'm not the person to do it bc i'm really a casual fan of the genre but it does seem like a glaring hole to have like every disney afternoon cartoon from the 90s nominated but comparatively v few anime (obv it would be insane to have an exhaustive anime list too but still)

on that note i'll nominate the totally trashy but still enjoyable:

Attack on Titan
Future Diary
Death Note

also lol wins

Family guy
American dad

i wondered how far we could get without any of those being nominated (nb american dad might end up on my ballot)

[q]The Big O was scored by Geidai alumnus Toshihiko Sahashi. His composition is richly symphonic and classical, with a number of pieces delving into electronica and jazz.[17] Chosen because of his "frightening amount of musical knowledge about TV dramas overseas,"[18] Sahashi integrates musical homages into the soundtrack. The background music draws from film noir, spy films and sci-fi television series like The Twilight Zone. The battle themes are reminiscent of Akira Ifukube's compositions for the Godzilla series.[19]

The first opening theme is the Queen-influenced "Big-O!".[20] Composed, arranged and performed by Rui Nagai, the song resembles the theme to the Flash Gordon film. The second opening theme is "Respect," composed by Sahashi. The track is an homage to the music of Gerry Anderson's UFO, composed by Barry Gray.[21] In 2007, Rui Nagai composed "Big-O! Show Must Go On," a 1960s hard rock piece, for Animax's reruns of the show. The closing theme is the slow love ballad "And Forever..." written by Chie and composed by Ken Shima. The duet is performed by Robbie Danzie and Naoki Takao.

Along with Sahashi's original compositions, the soundtrack features Chopin's Prelude No. 15 and a jazz saxophone rendition of "Jingle Bells." The complete score was released in two volumes by Victor Entertainment/[q]

Huh.. Never knew there were three theme songs! 'Yours' is def more ELO, but great all the same.

feels like the "saturday morning" part of the title is perhaps a red herring. but whattayagonnado. man... there are a bunch of dubious teen-pleasing 90s anime shows I almost nominated but then edited back down since I figured we were only nominating stuff we thought deserved to be in the top countdown. in the late 90s i watched the first 2-4 episodes of virtually every show to which the high school anime club membership had access, and most of em i can't defend or even remember particularly sharply. was such-and-such plot element in tenchi-muyo, yu yu hakusho, blue seed, or 8 eyes? was that romantic misunderstanding in ah! my goddess, here is greenwood, marmalade boy, or kodomo no omocha? all gone now sadly.

Where are you, what's new, and mystery incorporated can be distinct. Based on skimming wikipedia during work, "The Scooby Doo Show" seems like it should be lumped into What's New, as far as the format goes?

And yeah it's the "Saturday Morning Memorial" poll b/c as far as I know the format no longer exists, today's cartoons are streaming and have been airing in prime time on cable since I was a kid. I think the shows on the WB were more or less the last gasp of the network cartoon program format, in terms of its vitality/continuity.

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Monday, 29 July 2019 21:53 (six years ago)

i haven't watched them since high school, but iirc: tenchi muyo, in ova, series, and tenchi in tokyo form, is real inconsistent, in tokyo particularly terrible

yu yu hakusho was so fun and so... so long

Beautiful post. And so otm. Especially the "all gone now sadly" part.

I've the melody of a theme song of a late 90s/early 00s anime etched onto my brain. It plays nearly every single day, I'm reminded of it constantly, it's been with me for 15, 20 years now. Yet I can't for the life of me figure out which anime it was. I've checked my hdd's, my mp3's on old computers and laptops, my blogs of yore for a mere chance mention, weeding through wiki anime series lists.. Nothing.

Until the day Shazam will be able to identify a very poorly whistled or hummed tune for what it is, it's lost. Tears in rain. Ah well.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 29 July 2019 22:02 (six years ago)

Perhaps it wasn’t anime? I’ve had this phenomenon before and I had misremembered some aspect of it that prevented me from tracking it down.

I came here specifically to nominate Freakazoid!, which remains my favorite cartoon ever on *Actual* Saturday Morning Cartoons tv, at least where I grew up.

that the eponymous protagonist is a nerd who is turned into a superhero by being sucked into the internet and absorbing all of its information makes it even more amazing.

Freakazoid! will get my vote after the Simpsons.

a lot of this stuff doesn't qualify to me; is Ren and Stimpy really a Saturday morning cartoon? any of those adult swim shows? no. those are basically adult cartoons that run/ran at various times. I assumed this thread about really about honest to god Saturday morning kid fare, like my personal favorite: dungeons and dragons!

akm, Sunday, 4 August 2019 20:29 (six years ago)

there was a godawful Ghostbusters cartoon in the 80's that had nothing at all to do with the Ghostbusters but was a cartoon sequel to a live action 70's show that absolutely no one remembered and I assume was made only to capitalize on the name, which then lead to a terrible 'Real Ghostbusters' cartoon that was based on the movies.

I think it's just a confusing thread title - the poll is any episodic animated series.

emil.y, Sunday, 4 August 2019 21:32 (six years ago)

i think some of the confusion may be between those of us who were on the neon genesis evangelion thread when silby brought up the idea of a sequel to the animated films poll, and those just seeing the thread fresh. in that context, it seemed obvious that it was about the best of serialized animation and not our most fondly-remembered childhood garbage shows. tho i think both are viable poll concepts!

Good morning, how are you, I'm (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 4 August 2019 21:39 (six years ago)

I just wanted a clever thread title :( it’s definitely all serialized animation that’s eligible. I’ll call it something else for the voting and rollout to re-prime people’s voting criteria.

The fake Ghostbusters cartoon (the one with a goddamn gorilla) was just called Ghostbusters, and the one with the real Ghostbusters (the ones that anyone cared about, from that big blockbuster movie) was called The Real Ghostbusters.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 5 August 2019 01:51 (six years ago)

The whole history of the ghostbusters cartoon is somewhat interesting actually in that they rushed it to capitalize on the name; the movie had paid a negligible sum for
The rights to even use “ghostbusters” since there’s been tv show in the 70s; then filmation maybe almost for the rights to make the actual animated series based on the movie but for some reason did that dumb shit instead and confused a generation of children. Anyway, it sucks. Thanks for the Peter Pan records reference though, what a disappointment that shit was

OK so here's the questions and DQs from my first collation of nominations (that weren't self-withdrawn by nominators):

Heathcliff: sounds like we want 1984 not 1980?

Bluey: 1976 or 2018?

Fleischer Superman: DQ

X-Bomber: live puppetry, DQ

Krtek: not clear to me that this constitutes a serialized production, looks like a series of short films

DumbLand: likely qualified, can anyone give me more context on the original production and distribution than wikipedia?

Mighty Mouse: the original Mighty Mouse shorts were non-serialized and theatrical. Wikipedia says "what made him a cultural icon was television" but by analogy with Looney Tunes and Mickey Mouse shorts I think I must DQ

TV Funhouse: probably qualifies, please speak up in favor

Captain Pugwash: looks like the 1957 B+W and 1974 color series were both live-action puppetry, hence DQ. The Adventures of Captain Pugwash (1998) is eligible if anyone wants to nominate that.

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Monday, 5 August 2019 16:21 (six years ago)

It is probably arbitrary to disqualify live-puppetry series from this poll considering they're hardly likely to generate a ballot poll of their own but arbitrary disqualifications over definitional matters is what separates us from the animals

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Monday, 5 August 2019 16:21 (six years ago)

Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures is a 1980s Bakshi-produced Saturday-morning series, which I mainly know because it looms large in the John K. narrative leading to Ren & Stimpy. I assume that's the one being nominated?

Good morning, how are you, I'm (Doctor Casino), Monday, 5 August 2019 16:38 (six years ago)

Oh I was assuming the nom was for the theatrical shorts which were later packaged for television.

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Monday, 5 August 2019 16:40 (six years ago)

No, that was my nom and it was def for the Bakshi/John K. iteration.

DumbLand was initially released online-only, but I was operating under the assumption that online series were up for consideration. If not, feel free to strike from the record.

re TV Funhouse: it was entirely animated, it was aired on a semi-regular basis (not every week, but usually at least once a month), and it had a single creator and vision. I woke up this morning dreaming that there was an '80s animated series called The Opuloids, which was presumably about a team of wealthy crime-fighting cyborgs who power themselves up via fistfuls of OxyContin. Please consider my show as a write-in candidate during this voting season.

Liberals are insane in the mimbrain!!! (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 10:26 (six years ago)

(Sponsored by Purdue Pharma. Villains include Fibromy Alger, who induces chronic pain, and Overton Counter, the dastardly fiend who tries to convince people that non-prescription analgesics are often sufficient. I have a theme song and everything. It was very productive, that shower I just didn't took.)

Liberals are insane in the mimbrain!!! (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 10:38 (six years ago)

didn't

(I am still adjusting to this iPhone and Zing, my apologies.)

Three month voting period and a note for my job, please.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 15:44 (six years ago)

oh no i forgot about Tom Goes to the Mayor

ciderpress, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 15:47 (six years ago)

yeah i need to set aside some time to watch all twenty-six episodes of Foofur before i can make a decision

Good morning, how are you, I'm (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 15:48 (six years ago)

xpost I wondered if that technically counted as 'animation'.

Liberals are insane in the mimbrain!!! (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 15:49 (six years ago)

yeah i'm not sure either i think it's in the realm of stop motion though

ciderpress, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 15:50 (six years ago)

sorry about Going Bananas, silby, turns out that was live action

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 15:51 (six years ago)

Way to spoil your run of unimpeachable nominations.

Liberals are insane in the mimbrain!!! (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 15:58 (six years ago)

don't pretend you have standards, it's embarassing

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:00 (six years ago)

No, I forgot to nominate Noozles! A show that is firmly in the "theme song has been stuck in my head on and off for 30 years" category

Is there a theme songs side poll?

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:03 (six years ago)

Since when is 'wholesale embrace of the barrel's bottom and the scrapings thereof' not a standard

Liberals are insane in the mimbrain!!! (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:05 (six years ago)

can always find a diamond in a shovel load of coal.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:08 (six years ago)

gonna be weird to have a poll with the smurfs and the simpsons, gonna be hard to see the kids' shows having much of a shot in this poll.

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:12 (six years ago)

I've been thinking that The Simpsons is likely to get more of the shaft than it deserves in the final tally. It's the only entry here that I'd recommend splitting up into its good and shitty eras.

Liberals are insane in the mimbrain!!! (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:18 (six years ago)

i could see it being a victim of everyone assuming everyone else will vote for it.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:22 (six years ago)

much like monty python before it, I sometimes have a hard time deciding if the simpsons end up being a cultural net gain or loss
signed, a guy who has the first five seasons on dvd

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:22 (six years ago)

i also meant to nominate Noozles, and would vote for it given a long enough ballot - another early exposure for me to the idea that a cartoon could have a beginning and an end. ayers rock and koala-walla-land loomed large in my imagination for a short period of time.

Good morning, how are you, I'm (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:26 (six years ago)

Never heard of Noozles!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:31 (six years ago)

Ohhhh yeah. That was the other koala cartoon Nickelodeon confusingly aired around the same time as The Adventures of the Little Koala.

yes I will be inviting theme song side ballots

Thermo, would love to have you do images, ilxmail me again with your email address in the body so I can get back to you

Leee if you want to actually post the rollout posts when the time comes I'd appreciate that as well

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:44 (six years ago)

i will be down to build a youtube playlist if you want

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:45 (six years ago)

theme song side poll is a great idea. a hoy hoy's TV themes poll only had i think twelve or thirteen animated show themes make the top 100, so there's plenty of undisturbed ground there, and there are tons of shows in the noms list that i would never vote for, which nonetheless had awesome theme tunes.

I can also help with collation (e.g. to catch entries with non-standard formats).

Coelacanth Green (Leee), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 17:34 (six years ago)

I expect I'll be able to handle all collation and tabulation but thanks for offering!

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 17:37 (six years ago)

omg i remember noozles

Mordy, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 17:57 (six years ago)

i know nominations are over but noozles just reminded me of Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics which i also loved (and also has an excellent theme song)

Mordy, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 17:58 (six years ago)
