ken marchant won his district by 33% in 2014, but 17% in 2016 and 3% (!) in 2018.

pete olson won by 35% in 2014, then ran unopposed in 2016, then won by 5% in 2018.

I think sharpiegate is related to his poor vision, which has been speculated on elsewhere. I think he thought the part of the FL panhandle that was on the edge of the predicted range of the storm was actually part of Alabama. There is a longitudinal line on the map which might have contributed to this. The reason he is doubling down so hard (other than never wanting to be wrong) is that a) he doesn’t want to be called out for having bad vision, and b) he doesn’t want his base in that area to know that he doesn’t know where Alabama ends and Florida begins.

Before they knew the storm was going to turn right, back when it was in the USVIs, the gulf of Mexico and AL were certainly possibilities (after failing to turn right, passing through the Florida panhandle and out into the gulf). Trump was at worst out of date since at the time he warned AL, the forecast already had the storm turning right. I'm not sure who you mean by the left or what you consider to be distractions. I do think that the way the US system works that it becomes very hard for ordinary citizens to accomplish much between elections, when the people occupying high office are not inclined to assist you in your goals.

Scanning the real state of politics in the USA the past two or three years, I think the mid-term elections went pretty well from the standpoint of taking the punch bowl away from the Republicans by re-taking the House.

The Senate is heavily weighted to reward small rural states with disproportionate power and it only exposes a third of its seats to the will of the people during any election, so that was and remains a much harder nut to crack. The president was rebuked but not removed by the mid terms.

There have been suits filed and injunctions issued over as many of Trump's policy moves as could have been filed. The president's erratic, childish, petulant and bullying behavior is correctly called such by the left. Ridicule is a decent political weapon, too.

I don't think the CDC really knows what exactly it is yet. there seems to be a correlation to black market THC carts, potentially related to a thickening agent they've been using to make the carts appear more "real". from what I've heard a lot of the carts tested have Vitamin E oil in it, which is something you definitely can't smoke, but not all of 'em had it and some of the people hospitalized weren't using THC carts at all, so it's all a bit up in the air right now

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on Friday brought back to life an emoluments-related lawsuit against President Donald Trump. The lawsuit filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) had previously been dismissed for lack of standing. The lawsuit is revived at a time when “potential violations of the Foreign and Domestic Emoluments Clauses of the Constitution ” are under the microscope.

The case at hand was argued before and decided by Circuit Judges Christopher Droney, Pierre Leval and John Walker. The Court decided that U.S. District Judge George B. Daniels’ dismissal of the suit was vacated and sent back to the lower court. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of high-end hospitality business plaintiffs, alleged that the plaintiffs have been harmed by the president unlawfully profiting off of his office, as “foreign and domestic government clientele” keep patronizing Trump properties.

As per usual regarding restrictions upon executive power, all the enforcement measures in the US constitution are incredibly weak, because in reality they all boil down to impeachment by Congress or an adverse SCOTUS decision - and neither of these "co-equal" branches has a mechanism to enforce their verdicts, aside from broad public acceptance of their legitimacy.

Vaping and e cigs have vastly improved the experience of going out in places without comprehensive workplace smoking bans. I’m in Japan now and there’s been a 31% drop in cigarette smoking mainly in favour of e-cigs. It’s not perfect and I’d prefer everywhere to be non-smoking but it’s orders of magnitude better than it was even a handful of years ago.
