ILX's Best Television of 2019 Poll / VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD / Voting Ends January 31

I wanted to set this up so that people who only watched a little television as well as massive media nerds like myself could have equal opportunity to play, so here's how the voting will work:

(1) If you list between 1 and 4 shows on your ballot, each show you vote for is given fifteen points.

(2) If you list between 5 and 10 shows on your ballot, each show you vote for is given ten points.

(3) If you list between 11 and 20 shows on your ballot, the first ten shows you include will be given ten points apiece and 11 through 20 will be tallied at five points.

(4) If you list up to 25 shows on your ballot: the first ten shows get ten points, 11 to 20 get five, 21 to 25 get three points apiece.

(5) If you list more than 25 shows on your ballot, I'll ignore everything after 25.

Obviously, given the method of assessing votes, you'll want to list your ballot in order of best to least. As much as humanly possible, please make your vote pertain only to seasons/episodes that were released in 2019... a vote for Better Things should be for the 2019 season and not for the first season that you just discovered over Christmas.

if you want to vote strategically, yes! I wanted to give the option to folks who felt real passionate about two or three shows and didn't watch anything else to speak loudly. By normalizing the top ten as ten points, i hope that doesn't penalize maximists too much.

Hello I have OCD and I have recommendations: start a document on your desktop labeled "2020 Media" and then put in headings for MOVIE, TV, PLAYS, BOOKS/COMICS, CONCERTS, EXPERIENCES (good catch-all for museum visits, art shows, talks, ice skating and whatnot) and blammo, you have a diary that you can check at the end of the year to keep track of things you like. It's still January so you can likely put that list together now and not lose anything!
If you are like me, organizing music this way is totally useless as there are too many songs/albums; so use ILM as your personal blog to keep track of stuff.
Join me next week when I'll explain why you have to wash your hands for the third time (spoiler: you touched the sink)

I'm hovering right around ten shows that I'm caught up on and can legitimately vote for and there are at least a couple that frankly aren't really good enough for me to vote for. I may quite frankly cheat on the former point because I've just started watching (but am already several seasons into and will probably be caught up on by the time the results go live) a show which I've quickly fallen in love with and have on good authority maintains its sterling standards through the present day.

I'll also try to vote when I have access to a laptop again in a few days

Most of the 2019 shows I have seen are frankly unworthy of nominations or votes but they make for solid ambient accompaniment to making dinner and paying bills and what have you.

i arranged the 15 shows i voted for into a tier of 1-10 and 11-15 to align with the point tiers above, but then i was thinking that if i could choose, i would give 10 points to my top 5, which were the shows i really enjoyed above and beyond everything else, and 5 points to my bottom 10, which were shows i enjoyed but didn't reach that peak. but i understand that letting everyone assign their own points is too complicated. just being honest about what i loved vs. what i liked

I'll likely adjust different point scoring for future polls but let's chalk scoring issues up this go round to first time polling.
I've already got a tabulation system in place and people voted based on it so i don't want the hassle/work/madness of revising it midstream.

Also: we are getting several ballots with only three or four picks which means there's some strategic options if you really want to stress the stuff you love!

Solution: close the voting tonight as planned. Then announce that every voter has 3 or 4 days to affirm their ordered top 4 by email. Then add 5 points to 4s, 10 to 3s, 15 to 2s and 20 to 1s. I don't want my #1 and #10 to get the same number of points, and my only 'strategic option' is to only vote for 4 things! Which all get the same points as each other anyway! Sorry to be difficult but this would be way better (and less of a dull Netflix procession) with more tiering.

I am fine with different scoring for different polls, let a hundred flowers bloom! In a way, this scoring system forced me to put down four things I really liked and skip six which I like a lot but which lots of other people also like and maybe this helps reward individual enthusiasms, I dunno.

Only benefit to fewer picks is the under five ballot, where every vote gets fifteen.
Intent there is to encourage casuals to vote and to have a rooting interest. It appears to be working, we have ballots of all types now!

Yeah I didn't realize voting for the Good Place was possible! But I'm comfy with my top 4 as they are, as much as I like the Good Place (would have rated season 1 as #1 of 2016 I imagine) I'd put 2019 TGP in the group of things I'd be happy to see in the rolllout but to which I don't want to give the same points as I do to my absolute faves.

Wow that's great. I saw ~20 different shows last year, which is of course a very small slice of what's out there. excited to see what I'm missing out on

forks I seriously think a slow roll-out suits a TV poll, giving people time to talk about the results at more leisure, especially if they're not online during the moments that you're posting. don't stress!
