2019's Oscar Nominees

Very short ramp on this poll in tribute to this year's insanely accelerated schedule.

I've actually seen six out of nine--percentage-wise, that's gotta be the most for me this century, maybe since the '70s. Little Women and Hollywood about even.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which actually was the best film of the year.
(my beloved Image Book premiered in 2018)

Have seen four; Little Women by a nose over Irishman and Marriage Story.

But not voting.

I'll go ahead and say it as a non-Brit, 1917 isn't "that" "bad."

But Morbs, if you don't vote, where will the balance be against my vote for the Tarantino?

Parasite should take it. Irishman or 1917 will.

on average a decent crop of movies, by Oscar standards, although a couple that i liked pretty well still seem not quite "best picture" material in my mind. an "anything but Joker" option would basically sum me up.

haven't seen marriage story or ford v. ferrari yet... might be catching the former tomorrow, might see the latter someday. but if it bears even the slightest resemblance to the conversation about it, i can't imagine it being even in the top half here. as of right now it'd be parasite for me but not voting yet.

1 weird one: an aesthetic mediocrity that was the most politically salient American film of the year (Joker)

1 movie that I didn't like but has its merits (Marriage Story)
3 really great movies (Parasite, The Irishman, Little Women)

the saw those three movies once and really liked them. I saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 5 times when it was in theaters and last month, at home. I cry every time. A miracle that reaches heights of the medium itself.

They're all great movies except 1917, which is very beautifully directed/choreographed but p slight in other areas

I've only seen 3. Little Women, Once Upon, and The Irishman. All 6/10 or 7/10. I suppose I'll watch another Noah Baumbach white people movie at some point because I have netflix.

First year I've seen most of these before the Oscars - yet to see Jojo or 1917. Parasite was the best but I was surprisingly impressed by Ford v. Ferrari. Very enjoyable, good pacing. Good list of movies overall. Joker was the only one I didn't care much for

Yet to watch the car one or the Tarantino one. I kind of think marriage story might win - it’s about an actor and a director. Parasite should get it, will probably get best foreign instead.

Semantics aside, I was transported. 6 times. Call it whatever you like, I felt the same way about The Image Book (the movie OUATIH reminded me most of). They both caught me off guard, the Godard less so, but QT hasn't made a movie I really loved since Kill Bill, and even that doesn't even approach how I feel about OUATIH. Nowhere close. The adjectives and superlatives are never-ending, but what else can I say? Not much. I understand why some people don't like, why others aren't interested, but for me, it's an alchemical experience. Call that what you will.

This is the year with the most really great films that aren’t nominated for Best Picture in a long time. Uncut Gems might well end up being a better respected movie than any of these.

tho a BP win really only makes sense if the Oscars go by "TIME Person of the Year" criteria, which Joker would win no contest imo

since I don't think Irishman will take home anything (Pesci would probably have #2 but I think Pitt will win and fairly deservingly), I'm keeping my fingers crossed for OUATIH, which was almost shockingly great moreso considering the two films QT released previous to it.

That doc is actually a lucid indictment of thirty years of American trade policy, so Obama's willing to take the hits out of office that he wasn't when he ruled the West.

$223 million of viewers worldwide. the international Quiet Dad demographic: a very satisfying picture for people who don't need to have anything to say about their viewing experiences afterward. it shoots racecars well, has a bunch of men doing mid-century jaw performing, uses or simulates existing light in a way that's refreshing to see (just checked, and Panavision made bespoke anamorphic lenses for the production's HD cameras), balances a range of buddy / rival tensions just about competently. attempts to gesture at some "maybe underdog narratives only exist because of the strictures of capitalism" themes but is terrified of actually having a point, let alone considering that glorifying motor vehicle production & wildly recreational burning of fossil fuels is plainly endorsing a death cult in 2019.

watched the first half of marriage story yesterday. what a bore.
