Aside from the oldies station (back when it played '50s music), my childhood radio memories are being stuck my grandparent's during the summer and having to sit through Paul Harvey and Limbaugh; specifically, the latter playing some impeachment-themed parody of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" sung by a Clinton impersonator. I can't say I understood most of what Limbaugh was talking about, but something about his smarmy tone grated enough to inoculate me against conservative punditry in general -- which came in handy, as my father turned into a Fox News addict after 9/11, and was enough of a Bush supporter to get the annual Christmas card/calendar "signed" by Bush.
― blatherskite, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 16:46 (five years ago)

I went through a brief period in 7th/8th grade influenced by a favorite teacher in which I listened to A LOT of Rush and even read his first two books. I was a weird kid. I think this was also precipitated by the fact that I was a huge Clinton fan when he ran for president when I was in 6th grade and even went to one of his rallies and wore a way-oversized Clinton shirt and buttons to school on election day, only to have said buttons stolen from me and broken. Again, a weird kid.

I first learned of Limbaugh as the hero of a guy I went to high school with, who used to rage about things like Ellen being allowed on TV and Canada not being a Christian country (by whichever metrics he used to determine this). He once gave me shit for reading an issue of Rolling Stone that included Jann Wenner's endorsement of Clinton in '96. I tend to think of this guy turning into the saddest adult imaginable, but maybe he's finally in his element in the current political climate.

The first time I saw the Morton Downey Jr. show I was convinced it was a parody — I remember telling a friend that it must be a spinoff from Saturday Night Live, or something.
Non-New York area folks may not remember Bob Grant, but he was another real piece of shit going back to the 60s (when he was based in L.A.). He was on the air in New York until 2006, died in 2013. Totally forgotten now, I think.

I worked in a chain bookstore when Limbaugh's first book came out, and we had a HUGE display of it at the front of the store. I hated having to constantly see that bloated face-too-small-for-his-pumpkin-head fuckface at work. HATED it.

It's hard to talk about without divulging personal details on the internet, but suffice to say I came from a republican home and my father was a big influence on me in many ways, so after getting out on my own I decided to read his first book when it came out. I decided all on my own that he was a total asshole. It broke "the spell". It really was a catalyst which drove me away from right wing politics in general. So, I guess I can thank him in a weird way.
― beard papa, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 18:38 (five years ago)
It would make for an interesting thread premise, actually: 'Ex-right-wing ILXors, what broke the spell for you?' The compulsory parody thread would be even sweeter.

Rush is one of the biggest pieces of shit in American public life and basically opened the door to being a professional asshole as a viable career option. I can't say that Fox News wouldn't exist without his popularity (which was massive between the time he really took off to the demise of his football broadcasting career), but he showed how lucrative it could be and how willing people were for the kind of message- and as importantly - the tone- that he had to offer. The damage he has done to the psyche of this country is irreparable in my opinion. During summers in college, I worked for a county highway department and a big portion of my job was spent sitting in a truck, either driving ahead of a patching crew to alert oncoming cars or sitting at the mile spaced intersections out in the wide open country to redirect the rare vehicle. Spent a lot of time reading and listening to the radio, but the worst week was when we were situated in one of the only "groves" in Central Illinois and the only station I could pick up was the talk radio station with his show. It was awful and I had trouble deciding whether the stifling summer silence or Limbaugh's frothing rage was more torturous.

Lung cancer varies but average 5-year survival rate for Stage 4 is 2%. Reading between the lines, he was diagnosed in Feb, probably underwent some initial chemo/radiation type treatment (which doesn't really do much for lung cancer) and then was prescribed a cancer drug that worked somewhat by reducing the cancer or at least maintained the status quo. The thing is, unfortunately ime, these drugs only work for a certain period of time and then stop being effective for a patient, so the doctor noticed the drug had stopped working on his six-week/ninety-day checkup and has now prescribed another drug that may or may not work as well as the first one. I am making some assumptions, but the fact that he was diagnosed in Feb and the drug is already not working in Oct is not a good sign. This could go two ways: the new drug is effective and maybe he gets another year or two, tops, or the drug doesn't work and he is dead in the next six months.
Regardless, it is pretty clear to me that Limbaugh isn't going to see election day 2024 and there is a decent chance he doesn't see the midterms in 2022.
Also, fuck Rush Limbaugh.

Hunter S. Thompson's Nixon obit appropriate here:
In the traditionalist style, the dead president's body would be wrapped and sewn loosely in canvas sailcloth and dumped off the stern of a frigate at least 100 miles off the coast and at least 1,000 miles south of San Diego, so the corpse could never wash up on American soil in any recognizable form.

kind of funny how Colin K taking a knee has generated 3+ years of controversy, a ruined career, cries of traitor, and "politics don't belong in football", but Limbaugh actually saying on the air that Donovan McNabb wasn't really all that good and the media was just trying to advance the narrative of a black QB succeeding and getting fired for it was an "outrage" to these same people

Adolph Hitler was a gifted statesman and public speaker, but in his later years certain flaws became more evident.(And yes I just went full Godwin, but if this particular occasion doesn't warrant it I don't know what does.)

Calling that Taibbi tweet (and the linked essay) a "defense" of Rush Limbaugh isn't a fair reading.
― DJI, Friday, 19 February 2021 19:34 (four years ago)
i don't think taibbi's doing an accurate reading of rush limbaugh either
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 February 2021 19:41 (four years ago)
takes a very selective memory to believe for even the briefest seconds that limbaugh had an "anti-establishment" pov even if he ultimately characterizes it as an act

show that tweet to anyone who grew up gay in a household that listened to rush limbaugh and they would prob suggest that matt taibbi should stop shitting through his fingers

― The Mandolinrainian (Old Lunch), Friday, 19 February 2021 19:47 (four years ago)
I tried the day he died (but gave up because I'm old and technology confuses me) to screenshot + post the headlines from various news outlets that were all like 'that ornery rapscallion, he sure was controversial, but my goodness he was a broadcaster'. I like just kept dry heaving every time I read one.

Slate/Ismail: It’s hard for us to discuss terms like wokeness because there seems to be such a wide disparity in what people mean when they say it.Mandel: I think that people see it in different ways. I see it as an insidious thing that’s happening in America, and other people see it as, um—An answer to something that’s insidious in America.Correct.You say you hear that parents in general believe that the pendulum has swung too far. Is the anti-wokeness movement, and the overall production of so many right-leaning books, swinging the pendulum back too far?We try not to categorize ourselves that way. We want to see ourselves as more wholesome. But also, our main book of the month was Rush Limbaugh. So, is that characterization necessarily like totally accurate? Obviously not. I’m just being totally honest. We see a hole in the market and I personally think every kid should know who Rush Limbaugh was because he was a very important person in our national discourse and our national dialogue in the media. And you can treat him as Che Guevara, like a saint. I just think it’s important for every kid in America to know who someone like Rush Limbaugh was.

i'm sorry that his ideas and his name are being forced to live on, but also, thank god that rush limbaugh is dead. got what a fucking asshole who really should have died many years earlier. we're lucky that he's not around to make our world worse today as "woke" exploded around the time he finally did one good thing and died
