Dunno who to vote for as the ones I've heard I like. Also Duran Duran Duran.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 16:52 (five years ago)

i thought RJD2 was a Star Wars pun?

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 16:52 (five years ago)

imo Joy Orbison and BJM are good names. I feel like I knew Buckcherry was a pun at some point and then forgot again, man they really just suck.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 16:54 (five years ago)

yeah I should've left RJD2 off, opens the door to including all the other non-musical pun names (Dandy Warhols etc)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 16:55 (five years ago)

I have never heard Buckcherry, not in any way interested to.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 16:57 (five years ago)

Wait, is Joy Orbison supposed to pun on Joy Division also?

jmm, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 16:57 (five years ago)

spoonerisms are amongst the lowest shorms of fit in band names and oh so hilarious twitter accounts.

calzino, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 16:58 (five years ago)

there are more of these, but I hate them so much that I've blocked them out of my head and can't recall the names

Hey y'all I just came up with one, feel free to use it if you want people to hate your band and its name: Yonic Sooth

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:01 (five years ago)

I've never heard a note of their (her?) music, but Joanna Gruesome sounds so much like a 70s Hanna Barbara cartoon parody of Joanna Newsom that I love imagining the world in which such a thing might exist.

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:10 (five years ago)

Do Mary Tyler Morphine count?

Maresn3st, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:10 (five years ago)

Wevie Stonder fails in every way.

jmm, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:10 (five years ago)

Joanna Gruesome = Scooby Doo villain iirc

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:11 (five years ago)

Yes, Wevie Stonder exudes such a depressingly-fundamental lack of effort it kind of makes me sad for those band members. You okay, boos?

Just learned altered zones era RUN DMT changed his name to Salvia Plath to avoid confusion with a dubstep duo also called Run DMT but that another different person was already using Salvia Plath as an artist name at the same time, too. Truly an innovator in terrible already taken drug puns.

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:15 (five years ago)

dread zeppalin is a tribute band, feel like we should make an exception for those?

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:17 (five years ago)

are there any good ones of these? i always thought "Beatless" was kinda funny in a MAD magazine movie parody kind of way, but now i can't seem to confirm that was a real band and not some record store joker's labeling of a used CD section divider.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:17 (five years ago)

Bet that already exists.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:17 (five years ago)

Yes, and they are actually kinda good.

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:18 (five years ago)

The big one missing here is Fats Domino / Chubby Checker.

Isn't Kathleen Turner Overdrive a proposed joke name of the band in "High Fidelity"?

I would submit that Lez Zeppelin is about as inspired as Dread Zeppelin.

But as voodoo chili notes, it's also kinda not fair to fault tribute bands for punning on the name of the band they are a tribute of. I mean if you buy a ticket to "Bruce in the U.S.A." you pretty much know what you're getting.

Natalie Wouldn't (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:18 (five years ago)

Dr. C, you are otm wrt the Mad Magazine comparison. Even as a kid it used to drive me nuts that the altered names in their movie parodies were so completely tossed off. RAIDERS OF THE LOST BLECCH! or whatever. Come on, man, you're getting paid for this shit.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 17:21 (five years ago)

DAVE: We're thrilled to have the great Neil Peart here for the conclusion of Drum Solo Week. And for the occasion, we whipped up this little something:
Dave holds up a bottle of Neil Peart Plus shampoo.(The audience offers tepid laughter. Off camera we hear an angry Alan Kalter. He is not happy with the audience response.)
ALAN: "Oh, are you kidding me? Come on! What's wrong with you people?!"
DAVE: "Alan, what's the matter with you?"
ALAN: (to the audience): "That's it? That's all you ungrateful bastards can come up with, a charitable little mercy laugh? They brilliantly combined Neil Peart's name with a popular shampoo and conditioner in one! Don't you get it? Mark my words, 'sdd'holes, next time you don't laugh, I'm coming out there and fighting every one of you. (to Dave) Now, Dave, say it again!"
DAVE: "I don't think we need to do the . . .

ALAN:" DO THE DAMN JOKE!"
DAVE: (Dave sheepishly holds up the bottle): "It's Neil Peart Plus"
The audience responds enthusiastically.
ALAN: "That's what I thought . . . idiots."

I always thought Jefferson Airhead was quite a good name

― fetter

there's an old '60s band who called themselves "Hamilton Streetcar", the one song I know of theirs is pretty good

are there any good ones of these? i always thought "Beatless" was kinda funny in a MAD magazine movie parody kind of way, but now i can't seem to confirm that was a real band and not some record store joker's labeling of a used CD section divider.

― Doctor Casino

can confirm the existence of BeatlesS, have a couple of their tracks on a comp CD from the Wifflefist label. Good comp, even if i was more taken with Bicentennial Quarters.... it looks like Bicentennial Quarters' only other appearances on records are the comps Cognitive Mapping Volume II and a fairly expensive limited fundraising CD also including BeatlesS called... yes... Power of Tower!

I just remembered that there's a Japanese band called Sex Machineguns? Which I admit I find amusing. Don't know what they sound like though.

― may the force leave us alone (zchyrs)

i think they're a visual kei band? the song of theirs i've heard is some pretty great power metal, i like it plenty

The name is a combination of the Japanese words Maso (マゾ, Masochist) and Onna (女, Woman). It is also a pun on the name of the pop singer Madonna. The name is sometimes rendered as an acronym for Mademoiselle Anne Sanglante Ou Notre Nymphomanie Auréolé (血まみれのアンヌ嬢・若しくは・我等がニンフォマニアが・後光に包まれる) or Mystic Another Selection Of Nurses Naked Anthology.

If by "naming convention" you mean an artist/band name that's a pun on another artist's/band's name, then yeah, Chubby Checker (mentioned several times upthread) predates them by 25 years.

I admit to willfully ignoring the thread title and posting a band name simply because it fits the pattern, rather than because I think the band is bad, though they may well be (I've never heard them).

And Martin Mull's "blues" song was by Blind Lemon Pledge.

(For the non-USers, Pledge is a furniture polish, that comes in a lemon scented version.)

thing about these bands is, they all had to (probably still have to) go around telling all their friends and family and peers what the name of their new band was, and they stuck to their guns. for which they get some grudging respect from me

henry cow is technically one of these bands (they lied about their name) but they're too good for the rest of these jokers - I assume, having heard of none of them before this poll

your original display name is still visible (Left), Monday, 17 October 2022 18:54 (three years ago)

not really the same, but feels really odd that there is a female pop star called DYLAN at the moment. who clearly decided, probably against advice of many many people, that it made sense to call herself DYLAN in a field where there is already a DYLAN who people refer to as DYLAN.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Monday, 26 May 2025 16:03 (five months ago)

I believe that the singer/songwriter Sam Phillips based her stage name on her childhood nickname, against advice that the recording industry had a somewhat prominent Sam Phillips.

Speaking of Dylan, the singer/songwriter Wesley Stace's use of the stage name John Wesley Harding was, I believe, intentionally annoying.
