A friend said she received a notice hers will be deposited on Wednesday, but she's the only person I've heard anything like that from. I certainly haven't.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 April 2020 01:43 (five years ago)

my best friend got hers, her boyfriend didn't. one of my old friends from Oregon got his.

I'm not stupid enough to give my bank account information to Donald Trump. If a check ever lands in my PO box, hooray.

*never

Nope. We always write a check, or asked them to send us one back when we used to get refunds.

If you've mailed a check, they have all the bank account info they'd have if you did EFT.

to get the check you have to meet a man in a suit who makes you sign a large leather ledger, then takes a key which he has on a necklace to open a safety deposit box that contains the check

then Matt Damon kills you

unperson i think you're going to have to go to some website treasury is launching on wednesday (according to mnuchin at the trump campaign coronavirus event earlier). he said that everyone who was going to receive it via direct deposit would get it by wednesday, and that everyone else should go to the website to get it. which to me, seemed like the usual "gift card" grift - they know not everyone will go to the website and get it that didn't receive it via direct deposit, so they'll save a bunch of money and fuck over people who are too busy taking care of kids or working to read the fine print.

I got mine this morning. To the credit card bill it goes!

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 15 April 2020 14:04 (five years ago)

got mine but it's a weird amount. originally thought we wouldn't get anything then realized it was based off taxable income, not gross; but what I received was $1,988.55 which is about $1k less than I'd assumed we'd get (married, one kid). Maybe it decreases the higher the income before it cuts off entirely?

akm, Wednesday, 15 April 2020 14:05 (five years ago)

Yes -- this morning. The full amount. It's going toward the Campari fund.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 15 April 2020 14:06 (five years ago)

apparently there is a maximum number of times you an try and enter your direct deposit info on the IRS website and you get locked out for 24 hours (just happened to me...) so... there you go

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 15 April 2020 14:11 (five years ago)

akm:

Eligible individuals with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for single filers, $112,500 for head of household filers and $150,000 for married filing jointly are eligible for the full $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 married filing jointly. In addition, they are eligible for an additional $500 per qualifying child.

For filers with income above those amounts, the payment amount is reduced by $5 for each $100 above the $75,000/$112,500/$150,000 thresholds. Single filers with income exceeding $99,000, $136,500 for head of household filers and $198,000 for joint filers with no children are not eligible and will not receive payments.

Nhex, Wednesday, 15 April 2020 14:24 (five years ago)

not to speak out of school but if my math is right your joint file is a little under $170k?

Nhex, Wednesday, 15 April 2020 14:27 (five years ago)

found the same thing....yeah, from what I recall (I didn't do taxes for this year yet, so this was last year). I'm still not sure why it's such a weird amount though and not something rounded off and normal. 55 cents, really?
anyway luckily this was direct deposited so I do not have to see the president's serial killer scrawl

Went to the IRS Get My Payment site this morning... IRS doesn't have my direct deposit info (they should, I got my refund for tax year 2018 via DD) but their update banking info form crashes if the amount owed/amount refunded on your tax return is zero... and for 2019, that's what mine is. Oh well, maybe I'll get a paper check this summer sometime.

WmC: as in, if I were you, I would try with the actual refund amount from 2019, and then try with "0" (in case they map the field onto the amount actually refunded to you). If neither works, then my guess is that you have filed "too recently" to be in their system right now.

So apparently anybody who filed and OWED taxes in 2018 and 2019 and paid via EFT didn't get refunds as they legally can't use that bank account for stimulus. I guess because different authorizations legally.

And you're supposed to be able to enter your info in, but lots of people got that "Please try again" message suggesting they couldn't confirm their eligibility. IRS claims there were server congestion issues and that this caused an error message, and that was being used as the "default" error message. And might go away when you try again when its less busy.

Wtf? Good "default" error message guys.

technically speaking, the eligibility for this "refundable tax credit" is based on your earnings in 2020, but they're advancing it to you using your 2019 income (or if you haven't filed, your 2018 income). but they've said if you get the stimulus this year and you technically shouldn't have been eligible based on 2020, they won't make you pay it back.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 April 2020 17:34 (five years ago)

likewise if you find yourself ineligible this year (ie you made like 123,000 in 2019 when you filed), and then based on your 2020 income, you should have been (maybe you got laid off this year nad made like 50,000), you'll get the "refundable tax credit" of $1,200/$2,400 next year.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 April 2020 17:35 (five years ago)

all income of us citizens taxable by the usa, even if you've never lived in the usa

you aren't eligible for foreign income exclusion? or do you make so much money that some of it is taxable? The foreign exclusion is pretty large

sarahell, Saturday, 18 April 2020 17:39 (five years ago)

yeah my partner and I have yet to pass the exclusion mark. It is still definitely a PITA to file every year though

dip to dup (rob), Saturday, 18 April 2020 19:06 (five years ago)

Euler is in France though, so the size of the exclusion might not seem so large compared to Canada (since it's in USD)

dip to dup (rob), Saturday, 18 April 2020 19:08 (five years ago)

No I don’t make much money! We don’t have to pay taxes now, for that reason, but we do have to file each year, and if we started making bank then the USA would get a cut. Also we have to deal with FATCA too, so the USA knows how money I make in France.

Joey Corona (Euler), Saturday, 18 April 2020 19:21 (five years ago)

so, you're annoyed that you have to file forms?

sarahell, Saturday, 18 April 2020 20:38 (five years ago)

also fyi -- i can try and dig up the notice in question, but the IRS did say a week or so ago, that the stimulus payments aren't all coming at once, and they are paying the lower income people first, so if you aren't "in the system" yet, it could be that your income (from the most recent year filed, either 2018 or 2019) is on the higher end of the eligibility scale.

sarahell, Saturday, 18 April 2020 20:40 (five years ago)

hmm. by most standards we are well-off but got it immediately. Could possibly be because of kids?

molon labe, kemo sabe (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 18 April 2020 20:42 (five years ago)

idk -- I haven't filed for 2019 yet, and I got my payment Wednesday, but I had direct deposit info from 2018 from a refund because I was super careful about paying enough in estimated payments so I wouldn't have to owe.

sarahell, Saturday, 18 April 2020 20:44 (five years ago)

i make right under the pay rate that gets phased out, so I'm not sure why they paid me so early.

I did have two friends get paid just today.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 April 2020 21:05 (five years ago)

I suspect direct deposit is a factor. I always get a paper check, so will probably have to wait until Trump personally signs however many millions he has piled up on his desk.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 18 April 2020 21:28 (five years ago)

sarahel—-I guess yes? Forms are no fun! And I have a slew of them as a French resident. The USA is the only country that enforces a right to tax non-resident citizens on their foreign income. That’s bullshit. We have to repost everything financial to the USA government despite their having nothing to do with our lives (we have a USA bank still but receive no income there). For that reason I’d have expected that we wouldn’t get a USA stimulus check but it seems that we will.

Joey Corona (Euler), Saturday, 18 April 2020 22:59 (five years ago)

IRS site says I'm getting my Trumpbucks on the 22nd, fuck yeah

can I use my trump bucks to buy an obama phone

k3vin k., Sunday, 19 April 2020 10:06 (five years ago)

My mom FINALLY got her unemployment claim filed. Assuming it doesn't get comedy denied, she'll make more money in 4 months than she has in decades.

Which is good cos otherwise I'll have to pay her rent until social security arrives, and the medical bills

genital giant (Neanderthal), Sunday, 19 April 2020 13:38 (five years ago)

"According to information that we have on file, we cannot determine your eligibility for a payment at this time."
same as it's been

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 21:55 (five years ago)

(checks watch again, taps toe impatiently)

Thanks, Obama.

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 22:21 (five years ago)

Progress! Today when I went to the IRS page, instead of status not available, it asked me for my tax return and bank routing info. Now the payment should be coming although I don't have a date yet. I see the tool had maintenance last night, I'm wondering if that was a factor in the change.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 24 April 2020 13:58 (five years ago)

Cool, site's finally working for me, too. Now I just have to dig my '18 tax materials out of whatever the hell box they're in. Probably get the check before I find them, honestly.

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Friday, 24 April 2020 14:14 (five years ago)

Okay, lol, I realized I could get the info I needed from the IRS site, went that route, entered everything into the seemingly-functional stimulus portal...aaaaaaand could not be completed due to technical difficulties. Fuck off.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 24 April 2020 16:35 (five years ago)

They haven't fixed the zero filer error yet (if you owe/were refunded $0), maybe after the scheduled updates this weekend.

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Friday, 24 April 2020 16:38 (five years ago)

yeah, that's what got me.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 24 April 2020 17:05 (five years ago)

Me too.

How could the IRS ever have been expected to account for something like this, I ask you.

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Friday, 24 April 2020 17:09 (five years ago)

we should privatize it, just like the post office -- give their powers to a more efficient, competent private corporation.

sarahell, Friday, 24 April 2020 17:15 (five years ago)

Also, if you file today, we will throw in a free subscription to Rolling Stone!

genital giant (Neanderthal), Friday, 24 April 2020 17:16 (five years ago)

finally I can get my tax refund in the form of Bed Bath and Beyond gift cards

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Friday, 24 April 2020 17:26 (five years ago)

for $89.99 a year, you can have the peace of mind Refund Reassurance Service! The RRS plan will notify you by email, text, and phone about the status of your refund, every step along the way! We will also automatically renew this service every year, for your peace of mind.

sarahell, Friday, 24 April 2020 18:52 (five years ago)

For only $15.99 a month you can get a box of tax forms shipped to your home! We select the forms and publications we think you will love.

sarahell, Friday, 24 April 2020 18:53 (five years ago)

n.b. back in the day, if you signed up to take the IRS Enrolled Agent Exam (basically the equivalent of the bar exam for tax professionals), you could check a box and request exam study materials free of charge. I did this, this was back in 2003. They sent two large boxes of just about every single tax form and publication to my home.

sarahell, Friday, 24 April 2020 18:55 (five years ago)

For anyone who was getting error 109 trying to enter zero owed/zero refunded on the bank account info page, looks like they fixed it last night. I was able to complete the process just now. Give it a try.

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Saturday, 25 April 2020 18:50 (five years ago)

yep, went through. Thanks for the heads up!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 25 April 2020 19:18 (five years ago)

^^^ thanks! Mine went through. I filed jointly with my wife so I'm not sure if both went through. I tried doing the same process with her SSN and birthdate and it went to a Logged Out screen so maybe?

herds of unmasked cletuses (WmC), Saturday, 25 April 2020 19:29 (five years ago)

hmm, sounds like it might still have you logged in with your own account... I'd fire up an incognito window in your browser and try to enter her info again.

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Saturday, 25 April 2020 20:53 (five years ago)

Just tried again and it says hers is scheduled for deposit as well.

herds of unmasked cletuses (WmC), Saturday, 25 April 2020 22:06 (five years ago)

result! sounds like the turnaround is 1-2 weeks for direct deposits once you enter your info

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Saturday, 25 April 2020 22:18 (five years ago)

Sweet, I think it actually worked. And I know it's just a coincidence that I hit 'submit' and immediately received two spam emails under my primary address which is generally entirely spam-free, I know that it must be a coincidence but still.

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Saturday, 25 April 2020 22:49 (five years ago)

How do you think they're paying for your 1200, OL?

Vinnie, Sunday, 26 April 2020 00:32 (five years ago)

Finally got my payment. The 2-week turnaround after entering your info seems to be the case. I told myself and others I'm banking this money in anticipation of traveling when the social distancing guidelines relax.

got a paper check in the mail on monday

budo jeru, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 17:28 (five years ago)

also got my direct deposit today! I entered my bank info on April 25th so it took 11 days. Guessing they are doing waves of direct deposits once a week?

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Wednesday, 6 May 2020 17:43 (five years ago)

I know a lot of frustrated grad students who filed with foreign addresses in 2018/2019 and now can't even get past the verification screen.

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Wednesday, 6 May 2020 17:48 (five years ago)

xp- that's how they normally process tax refunds (in batches once a week), so that is a very good guess

sarahell, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 17:56 (five years ago)

cleared by direct deposit yesterday.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 6 May 2020 18:09 (five years ago)

Arrived via direct deposit today. Now we get to start pushing it out to some places where we know it is needed: some of it to people we know, some to non-profits like the food bank.

Like Hadrian, I also got my paper check after putting in my direct deposit. No complaints
