what happened in 04 that so many ppl seem to have found this place? That's when I got here but can't recall how.

― Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Monday, May 11, 2020 8:42 AM bookmarkflaglink

I don't remember exactly how I found it. I was very active on the Stereolab forum around then, and that may well have been what led me here.

― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, May 11, 2020 8:45 AM bookmarkflaglink

I may have first heard about it through hipinion.

heyday of blogging iirc, and no twitter yet

plus there were people making a living writing about music.

― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, May 11, 2020 8:51 AM bookmarkflaglink

I found Tom Ewing's Best singles of the 1990s some time in 2000, I think, and was reading Freaky Trigger for a while - my first ILX post was February 2001, though I probably lurked for a bit before then.

― Andrew Farrell, Monday, May 11, 2020 8:52 AM bookmarkflaglink

i bought my first computer immediately following 9/11 after it became clear that physical media was too slow to keep up with the world. Plus the downloading. I found ILX a few months after.

― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, May 11, 2020 8:54 AM bookmarkflaglink

I joined in 2003 but only really lurked. I properly started posting in 2015 (I think). I don't post enough so always feel vaguely like I'm posting from 'outside the room' as it were. I get this with all forums, tbh.

My friend that posted here told me about Geir and how he said Schoenberg ruined music so I joined purely to wind him up about it

I want this to be a true story

― Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Monday, May 11, 2020 9:12 AM bookmarkflaglink

Hey Geir, I know you still drop by every now and then. What's less musical in your opinion, twelve-tone serialism or rhythm for rhythm's sake?

― pomenitul, Monday, May 11, 2020 9:15 AM bookmarkflaglink

“The return to the board of noted musico-phrenologist geir” may yet be my answer to thread q so steady on pom

― Microbes oft teem (wins), Monday, May 11, 2020 9:17 AM bookmarkflaglink

lol I think I missed the 'phrenologist' part.

― Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Monday, May 11, 2020 9:12 AM bookmarkflaglink

Lol it totally is. The first post under my gov't name was me ribbing him for it. I didn't realize the dude very rarely responded to barbs so I lost interest, came back a year later to talk rap and metal.

― genital giant (Neanderthal), Monday, May 11, 2020 9:20 AM bookmarkflaglink

Schoenberg? I thought it was James Brown who ruined music?

get up get into it get inverted and retrogade

― mark s, Monday, May 11, 2020 9:35 AM bookmarkflaglink

I once started an 'end of music' Pandora station based solely on the initial inputs of James Brown and Schoenberg. Geir is a good sort, though; some time ago, I reminded him of some of his earlier ILM pronouncements and he lolled

― Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Monday, May 11, 2020 9:45 AM bookmarkflaglink

I like Geir, I think he drops by here from time to time. Some weird opinions, but a good guy.

― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, May 11, 2020 9:46 AM bookmarkflaglink

So he's not an actual phrenologist? I'mma need a citation, wins.

Followed the alt.music.alternative Star Chamber to Freaky Trigger; a message board followed. Was intrigued by good writers who wrote about Destiny's Child and Ryoji Ikeda with equal seriousness and took on the then-prevalent rock-critical orthodoxy; thought they could use someone who would rep for Boston and Boulez.

I joined in 2007. I was at one of the lowest points in my life and was googling things like "I am sad" and "I am lonely" etc. One day I made a conscious decision to turn that around and google things that I actually liked instead, and I googled "I love music". It was a move that exponentially enriched my life.

― how's life, Friday, February 10, 2017 12:42 AM (three years ago) bookmarkflaglink

That's how I found it. I joined because I felt like I had stumbled on the right kind of community. Music-obsessives who weren't just obsessed with one band or genre and whose knowledge was way deeper and more esoteric than anywhere else I'd tried to fit in. There was such a chaotic group of personalities, and I hadn't even let myself look at ILE or the noise board or anything like that!

This was also right in the middle of the controversial introduction of polls, which I couldn't really weigh inat the time on whether they were a good thing or bad thing for the site, but they made it easy to participate even if I didn't always feel like my opinion was something worth stating.

xxpost Huh. No memory of that one!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 May 2020 19:16 (five years ago)

This one?

Uh, I think we're all familiar -- VERY familiar -- with differences in personality online and offline, and how somebody who can be extremely friendly, garrulous even, online can offline be extremely quiet, shy, whatever you'd like to say. And many of us here have freely admitted to feelings, moments and full bouts of depression, and I am one of them. You don't want to be me in my moments of mental self-laceration, at all.
So I'll grant you that, with understanding. But I draw a very VERY clear distinction between your claims of feeling misrepresented on one thread and the, to be blunt, shit-stirring you've done elsewhere. That isn't because you were cornered in most instances, you came in dismissive, you continued being dismissive, you endlessly claimed you were being misunderstood and everyone else somehow lacked the intellectual ability to notice when you were being clever.

If you want to act that way all the time, get used to being regarded that way all the damn time. If you feel you have to blow up every damn time someone disagrees with you, then get used to being seen as someone who can only do that, every time, any time, ALL the time.

Otherwise, chill the fuck out. I'm not saying this because I'm mad at you, but because I'm mad at the situation. These boards, for all their frustrations and problems and more, thrive because they have value for those who post here, even if only on a few threads for a few folks. We welcome it as an oasis in the Net where there's too much stupid shit already. If you dropped the confrontationalism and took several deep breaths, you might realize you've found something that's infinitely better for everyone when not every post or every opinion is a trigger for lashing out or defense.

The choice, like I said, is yours.

Found Freaky Trigger by searching for lists of the best songs of the 90s so I could become cool and well-listened. Thence to NYLPM, thence to ILM. If I recall correctly, first there was just ILM, then there was the great splittening of ILE, which I didn't realize had happened and wondered why suddenly everyone was just talking about music and where were all the funny threads about books and movies and cultural differences of the Anglosphere? Eventually I clicked on the link at the top of NYLPM that said "I Love Everything || Join Our Club" which I had previously avoided because it sounded like a Social Thing, and was delighted to rediscover all the unhinged nonmusical ranting that I had pined for so. Over half my life up in this bitch, like daaamn.

I think I was previously aware but probably saw the same reference as Old Lunch while casually lurking, then eventually posted at the end of 2003 only to continue lurking some more

I landed here because (iirc) I followed a blog that posted a Shirley Collins song and there was a link to ILM in the sidebar. This was the only other place where I had ever seen people discussing music in this depth, so I lurked for a while, changed my username a couple times, met up with the Chilxors during the summer of 2005 (?) at an outdoor music fest (that turned into Pfork fest). I decided to stay and then 15 years passed.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 May 2020 21:49 (five years ago)

Simon Reynolds mentions the board in an essay on record collecting included in the first Experience Music Project anthology, This Is Pop. He mentions starting a thread on "hyperintelligent Internet forum I Love Music" asking which albums members found in the cheap bins most often. I sought out the board and joined in 2004 ("maybe I could talk to Simon Reynolds on the Internet!").

I've mostly just lurked since—about 10% of my posts must be about how I just lurk—and I'm inclined to say it's because my intelligence is more listless than hyper. But then, finding myself thinking about how I could work that into a pun about making lists, I have second thoughts: this post really belongs in the "Posts you had second thoughts about." Alas, at this point it is too late: some forty minutes later, I am already on to third or even fourth thoughts. No more dallying, I must tuck in my chin and hit "submit post." I do so, only to find I have been logged out, and must log in and write the whole post all over again. The X- in x-post is a substitute crucifix for TIME!

lol yes, it took me months to figure out there were other ways to look at the site besides "New ILM Questions"

same but worse, I think I thought this was a dedicated site for that album lol. I'm much better at the internet now, people. too good, in fact.

lol I just googled my old user name and am somewhat embarrassed by the sheer volume of posts, all on ILM. I was expecting 10-15, tops.

pomenitul, Monday, 11 May 2020 22:30 (five years ago)

i read a Nick Hornby thing back in 02 or 03 and it pissed me off so much i went online to see if anyone else had written about how stupid it was - i found an ILM shitposting thread that lined up perfectly - and then i lurked for ages until I was sure it was safe

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 11 May 2020 22:32 (five years ago)

I don't remember how I arrived at ILX, but I definitely remember how I got hooked: the first day on ILM in 2007 I came across a thread about Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again" and the revelation about the original "hobo" lyrics made me laugh so hard I never left.

I then lurked for 11 years before posting.

Pissed Jeans Genie C. Riley (PBKR), Monday, 11 May 2020 22:36 (five years ago)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 May 2020 23:08 (five years ago)

The great majority of posters seem to have entered via ILM. I came in the bathroom window.

In 2002, Ask A Drunk was on Greenspun, so were ILM & ILE. Back then I posted extensively to AAD and I popped over to ILE every now and then under a couple of names. Then Greenspun shut down, ILX moved to a new server, and the panjandrums of ILX graciously allowed AAD to share a corner of their new space. AAD soon faded out, much to my sorrow, but by then I was a fully operational ilxor. I've since lost my edge, and lost a step, but I haven't lost my way here.

A is for (Aimless), Monday, 11 May 2020 23:10 (five years ago)

Don't really remember, possibly via the Stereolab forum, or perhaps from Simon Reynolds or K-Punk. Reynolds had been a major source for my senior thesis on electronic music a few years earlier. I stumbled across Generation Ecstasy in the stacks while doing research.

I decided to stay and then 15 years passed.

ha weird, i was at this festival, i think it was called intonation at the time, the summer after my HS graduation. but i didn't discover ilx until a few months later while googling some band in my dorm, maybe liars or modest mouse or something. i stayed b/c nabisco was otm (and tim f.) my first foray into posting was sort of dismissive and aggro but i was appropriately embarrassed so i lurked for years while i chilled out

What are the canonical periods of ilx?

1: people saying "EVAH!", ft etc, rockism
2: mean period, "challops."
3: "rolling" threads, poll everything
4: Twitter embeds

???

"mean period" there, if that were a good name and not reductive (you were there for a fair part of it, right, you know better!) is prob subdivisible again

lbzc a part of it but not the whole of it
jagger/max eras, maybe

77 worth a think when slicing it too

spruce springclean (darraghmac), Saturday, 16 May 2020 18:09 (five years ago)

yeah, i would divide "mean period" into 2004-06 Noise Board era and then 2007-09 jagger/max/etc. the second era is distinguished by the arrival of smartphones, which significantly changed posting styles.
