episode 4 (is it?) has a really poor sketch with a guy dancing in a hat and glasses freaking a dog out and embarrassing everyone else in the room then is followed by the sketch with the pee-stained chinos which seems absolutely interminable. Those are the only two sketches in that episode, I think? Too many of the sketches revolve around extremely limited scenarios - someone doing something stupidly weird and everyone else feeling being embarrassed or repulsed by it. Most of the sketches end very unsatisfactorily as well, as noted above, which was a problem in s1 but is very much more of a problem this time around.

I feel like this season has more weird mood sketches that aren't actually funny but are either strangely compelling (Bob Odenkirk, Jamie Taco/Wife Guy) or... not (Karl Havoc, Sci-Fi Bar). Ok Jamie Taco is a bit funny. The Insider Trading trial was a good subversion of the more typical Tim Robinson Being Weird and Yelling format.

I think they're all funny. I measure the quality more by whether or not a bit feels forced. Referring to the performance, because I've got to say they're very good at making a forced idea work by slowly revealing that all the "straight man" characters or extras are actually in alliance (or inexplicably converted) with the lone weirdo (usually Tim). Which is so much of a formula for this show that I'm surprised somewhere upthread it was mentioned that there is one person in their own universe among regular people, because almost always it is revealed that they SEEMINGLY are all normal when in fact it's opposite. Best example of this is the gift receipt sketch from first season where literally one by one they all join Tim's madness in the end. We all kind of see this coming now but that early sketch was amazing because it timed things perfectly to trick the audience into thinking it would just be Tim getting more unhinged the whole time with opposite characters simply cringing.

yeah otm, thats kind of the secret sauce that makes this different from cringe-comedy stuff. another early example of that which is oft-quoted around my house is the hot dog car sketch where tim is talking about spanking the perpetrator and one of the other bystanders is like "well SOMEBODYS gonna have to do it!"

yeah that's one of the reasons i loved everyone freaking out about tim choking on the hot dog in the first sketch xp

yeah even in the boardroom scene (Dan Flashes), Doug goes from appearing as a responsible businessman mocking a younger dude's irresponsibility to actually revealing he's just a big bully who likes mocking Tim ("He got PUSHED DOWN THE STAIRS at Dan Flashes"), and he's actually enjoying it.

i keep reading criticism that too many of the sketches in this season take place in office environments but idk, meetings are the kind of liminal space where this comedy functions really well, everyone is just enough of a stranger to each other and no one really wants to be there

exactly. it's a painful familiarity that often serves as a breeding-ground for laughs just on that alone. the fact that they don't actually parody traditional office politics and go off in absurdist, wtf directions on top of it is the icing.

like it's not "PC Load Letter? what the fuck does that mean?" humor, it's "oh hey, this guy is so devoted to not skipping lunch that he'd risk choking to death while secretly eating a hot dog in a meeting"

I don't know if this has been discussed but the particular manner in which sketches call back previous sketches in this show has Monty Python DNA


feel like he probably got this more from Mr. Show

Mr Show was kind of a master at sketch segues and looping back to earlier sketches from previous eps

obv don't know for sure but just given his age and general aesthetic feels like Mr. Show would have been a pretty big deal to him

I love this show but Patti Harrison makes me cringe and not in a good, funny way.

the quiet/loud, sweet/dumb Farley/Sandler era of SNL feels like a bigger touchstone than Mr. Show.

Yeah actually one thing I was going to say is I felt like there were more "loud Sandler" moments in this season than the last, and I actually prefer less.

xpost circa, I did enjoy this season, but I think it's not on par with the first season. some instant classics, but like for example compare this season's Heidecker sketch to last season's Colgate Comedy hour jazz bore and, like c'mon, it's not even close

the moment in season two that maybe equals it is santa talking about how detective crashmore is like a cosmic gumbo

I think anything less than out and out worship is probably a bad fit for this thread, I don't feel like I'm doing hot takes, rather just some relatively mild and - to me at least - very obvious flaws in a show that is overall good and creative and I'm glad exists

i feel like when ppl point out the sketches they think are weaker they tend to be someone else's favorites (cf. karl havoc, identified as a not-really-funny sketch upthread, and for my money, maybe the funniest thing i've ever seen) which tends to be a mark of consistency and daring to me

i also don't think any sketch in the first season is quite working on the level of tammy craps. idk. both seasons feel about even in their merits

"there's too much tim yelling" was a criticism levied at the first season too and i legit can't tell if there's actually more this time around

Part of the diffs between S1 and S2 might be just the “second album” thing, where S1 was an assortment of all the sketches they had laying around for years from Tim’s SNL years on, and S2 was written over the course of a year or two

I’m curious if there’s any crossover between this and Tim & Eric(beyond just Heidecker’s appearance) due to how both shows had a knack for casting weird/non-actors

When the yelling isn’t working it’s when it feels like it’s forced, like he’s resorting to it to force the funny with that melodrama. Naturally we’ll all have different takes on whether it was called for or not case by case for all sorts of reasons.

Key & Peele maybe but I give this one the nod b/c it feels more modern and fresh, whereas K&P feels more like the ultimate iteration of SNL-style sketch comedy

ITYSL feels influenced by stuff like Twitter and Vine, just showing funny things & funny situations with little to no set up, or a set up which is basically unrelated to the main idea. a bunch of the Abso Lutely shows do this too - one of Nathan For You's central jokes is how he always takes the most convoluted, nonsensical path to do anything, Eric Andre and Tim & Eric keep doing that thing where a bit will switch genres twice in a minute, etc. I think it all sort of culminates in this, a sketch show where each season is only 90 minutes long but still contains as many funny ideas as two entire years of SNL.

It's odd to me to say K&P is SNL-style sketch comedy when A) most of their bits follow the same "escalate into insanity" template as ITYSL and B) Tim Robinson is an actual SNL alum.

ITYSL struggles with sketch endings slightly less than K&P did imo but they also produced a *lot* more material

i showed my brother the Big Wave sketch (he'd never seen the show before) and he about fell over when Tim flipped the table. glad we have the same sense of humor.

"escalate into insanity" is the template of SNL (and most sketch comedy) as well, K&P just generally takes it a step or two further. what ITYSL does feels different, things go insane but often in a wildly different direction. like it's pretty much impossible to predict where things are going because they don't follow any sort of linear path

So we watched the first episode of season 1 and I was, uh, really underwhelmed based on all of the hype. My wife is still giving me shit, three days later, for "that horrible comedy show you made us watch". The brunch skit was funny and I guess the baby of the year thing had a few good lines, but I don't think I laughed the rest of the episode. The gift receipt skit really felt like an SNL skit to me, decent premise and initial joke, but then just immediately landed in the bizarre without any ramp to it, felt really forced in a weird way.

I don't know how representative the first episode was, but I'm guessing that not finding the baby of the year skit to be absolutely hilarious means this show probably isn't for me.

My enjoyment of this show is based on the sheer levels of absurdity reached by most of the skits. Especially when someone's boilerplate nicety ("I liked your gift", "did Christmas come early?") is challenged relentlessly.

I'll probably watch more, they aren't a lot of time to invest (def without my wife).

I didn't like baby of the year much either but there are some very good ones. The Johnny Cash one is probably the most I've laughed this year

Something about Tim Robinson makes me start laughing almost immediately. Felt the same way about Chris Elliott back in his Letterman days. You know something good is coming.

one of the key mechanic of ITYSL and robinson's mind in general is

1 - establish norms of a setting amongst a group of people
2 - introduce person who is confused as to what is considered normal
3 - said person runs counter to the norm
4 - group initially reacts negatively
5 - rulebreaker becomes more insistent
6 - group shifts to rulebreaker's perspective and loop is closed

standard farce but he likes to dot it with severe sociopathic anxiety and a severely mannered lexicon that all the characters share

mannered dialogue is my favorite comedy move.

my wife loves this even more than me, and will occasionally creep up on me while i am reading or working to surprise me by yelling "SCROOOOOGE!!!" i didnt really get it at first, took me a little bit to figure it out and dial into the tone, but she was pretty much all in from the jump.

enjoyment of this is obv not gendered but there is definitely a big element of tim's thing that dials into a certain kind of 11 yr old boy dynamic that i remember very vividly from my youth (also helped by his v specific accent): passionately arguing about whats "not allowed", making a HUGE DEAL ABOUT IT if someone hits you or hurt you slightly in order to seize the moral high ground, saying frickin' but also real swears too, willing to do literally anything in order to convince peers you are somehow simultaneously 100% normal but also extremely cool, etc.

Remember when Jazz legend Marcus "The Worm" Hicks co-starred with Tiny Boop Squigg Shorterly? Those freak lips.... he hit the high Cs all night long. Now, he was no Roy Donk, but he did play the alto sax with a kink in it when he ran with Mookie Kramer and the Eight Balls.

The only episode I enjoyed more was when Paul Julian (the guy who did the voice of the Roadrunner) performed a few sketches with Jack Marshall (who wrote the Munsters theme song). The rest of the TV in the early 50s was pretty meat-and-potatoes.

The fact that you can buy the DVD set for like 12 bones makes me so excited that I want to pull my hair up (not out).

We just blew through both seasons pretty quickly, finally. Although I have no idea what was in what season since Netflix for some reason jumped ahead to season 2 at some point and then circled back around to the unwatched episodes of season 1.

I used to know the guy who played the male half of the couple in the TC Tuggers skit. Didn't realize his career had taken off to the degree that it has, so seeing him pop up on this show was a surprise.

that's always a bit of a jarring moment, like, turning on tv and seeing an old friend pop up.

not really. that show had a deep bench of amazing supporting comic actors, this one does not, though there are some bright spots (Gurgs is funny), but it's pleasant and I did laugh a bit at the second episode, so it's not bad by any means.
