Lurkers only!

At Nathalie's suggestion, you are only allowed to post to this thread if you usually just lurk around ILE reading our nonsense and not writing yourself.

Nick, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know if I qualify as a lurker or not. I am a poor taxonomist!

1 1 2 3 5, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I semi-lurk.

Melissa W, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[oh please: you are both familiar popular beloved ILE celebrities, and don't try denying. 11235 is even Exemplary Poster- Champion of a Taking Sides Thread viz Octopus vs Squid - latter declared winner as plainly ninjasquid CAN POST proof by observational science, whereas all extant lurking octopodes, despite also having eight legs or arms or whatever, failed to...]

sub moderator mark s, pontificating across the country line and outside his juri, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am a lurker. The other day i lurked alot and then gave a very sensile anwer to 1 question but that is all so far i think i need to brush up on myu wit more before i can stop lurking.

isabel, Sunday, 19 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am somewhat of a lurker who still wishes he would have kept his big trap shut so as to still be a full-blooded lurker. So much for semantics.

JC, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have been lurking for ages and have not posted at all before now. Why? I don't know. Laziness, I suppose.

rosemary, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Am I a semi-lurker or not? I need official confirmation.

Bill, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've been lurking here for ages but then I do that in real life too. Tend not to say much but then pipe in and say something puerile but that makes me laugh. Tends to just illicit groans or its so obscure I just get blank looks.

Haven't quite mastered this in the written word yet(which is probably a good thing). When i do, I shall de-lurk.

MarkS, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

semi... usually de-lurk when drunk.

Steve.n., Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I lurk therefore I am.

I don't love Everything, I only love Music.

I lurk outside Steve.n's house and look through his window to read the forums.

I shall retreat once more.

emil.y, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i frequently write replies but never press submit. i daresay if i ever had the courage to click it, perhaps i would stun the ILE throngs with my dazzling wit as you do, nick. But i have issues with messageboards that must be overcome first. it's all down to metaphysics.

nickie, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come now, good people, just look at me and my replies and think to yourself, "Well, if *that* idiot is comfortable enough spewing his nonsense here, my far more thoughtful contributions will be welcome." Peasy.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[I am writing tiny because I should not be here]

Nickie! You're here! It should be pointed out that Miss Byrne is not being sarcastic. ARE YOU NICKIE?

Nick, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I lurk and have been lurking for a long long time... I am posting to further disprove tom's theory that THERE ARE NO LURKERS ON ILE. I'm not sure why anyone would rather lurk than contribute, except perhaps for the same reason people would rather watch eastenders than have to live in albert square. Does that make sense? No? oh well. Also I am addicted to playing this game (http://www.jamba.co.uk/games/game_shows/thats_a_wrap) and therefore have no time for more trivial pursuits.

My freaky trigger claim to fame is that I once wrote tom a stupid email about boy bands which he foolishly but kindly put on the sadly (?) departed letters page. I am 23 ft tall and my favourite actor is cary grant.

kathy spider, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[Do I count as a lurker? I've posted a few times, whereupon the thread promptly flatlines.

j-lu (a k a tha threadkilla)]

j-lu, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Nickie! You're here! It should be pointed out that Miss Byrne is not being sarcastic. ARE YOU NICKIE?"

Yes I am nickie! hurrah! I've been reading ILE on and off at work on the sly when the relevant authorities are out of eye-shot. earlier this week, i was in the act of replying to the Dirty Vicar's Cork v. Dublin conundrum on the single office computer when one of the boss ladies came in, said in a loud, incredulous voice 'the Dirty Vicar?', to which i could but mumble an unconvincing reply. This board's filth is ruining my reputation.

nickie, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, I'm a semi lurker (have contributed a few times). I suppose I'm just too successful at procrastination (I'll get to posting eventually)

charles, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm also posting to disprove Tom's theory. I've been lurking for a while but have never quite been brave enough to join in... yet. liz

liz, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi we are Basement Jaxx we have been lurking for ages reading all of Emma's posts. We wuv her.

Basement Jaxx, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh hi Basement Jaxx. Now that we are neighbours would you like to go down the Railway some time for a pint? Don't forget you owe me 2 fags. If you sign my copy of Rooty I will let you off.

Emma, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm going to try this tiny writing thing too.

Being compared to Eastenders is surely the kindest thing anyone has said about the forum. And I would also point out that J-Lu has failed to kill this thread ha. Not that he/she/it killed any others.

Tom, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would like to point out that "Tom's theory" wuz in fact my theory. Tho bearing in mind it's been proven (by science or otherwise) as CRAP THEORY, I'd prefer it remain, officially as "Tom's theory".

AP, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Especially since Tom expanded on the theory by claiming that even if ILE lurkers did exist, they would hardly be likely to come out of the shadows just by my asking them to

Nick, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes well they are clearly rubbish lurkers if they can be lured out by such a feeble ploy. I bet Countryside and the Heath Ledger Board get a better class of lurkers.

Tom, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, but this is a much lower quality board than those mentioned. When you have threads that are the high calibre of 'Heath RULES!!!!!' and 'composting toilets' then you too will attract a better quality of lurkers.

kathy spider, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bah! We have threads like 'Whats the most unacceptable thing to come out of your ass', THAT is quality.

DG, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick, DG and Tom, SSSSHHH!
I lurk. Well, not really. I post too much. But this is my alter ego (or is that id?) talking. :-) Nonetheless I have to gloat, don't I? My theory has been proven right: there ARE lurkers.

mrs stevie nixed (nathalie), Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Semi-lurker I s'pose.... Have started a couple of threads and have had what I consider the ultimate seal of approval on ILM/ILE, ie Momus has posted on one of my threads.... Generally I spend far too much time reading all the threads than posting.

Richard, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what I consider the ultimate seal of approval on ILM/ILE, ie Momus has posted on one of my threads

Chris, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I lurk and I'm only responding so I can enjoy a good dose of self- induced hypocrisy since I beat Ally96 with a a chair whenever he mentions ILE. I only snub because I can't join in of course. and because I cant spell very well and I'm not funny. xxx

which, I now see, was on ILM. But you probably lurk on both, don't you? DON'T YOU?!

I was a lurker, but only for today because I sent a post as well today, so I'm not a lurker anymore. I'm a stalkist though, of Carey Lander if you must know, but don't tell her. Whoops.

Hurrah for Amy! Join us. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that a "gabba gabba one of us" kind of "join us", Ned?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 October 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been lurking for way too long(ever since Maria introduced me to the site maybe two years ago), so I figured I might as well expose myself now.

I'm being boring so, look! Viking Kittens!, which I'm sure you've already seen!

liz!, Sunday, 6 October 2002 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I am incredibly impressed by amy and liz!'s extraodinary measures of netiquette. hello!

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 6 October 2002 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that a "gabba gabba one of us" kind of "join us", Ned?

If you like. And yay to Liz! too!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I have been recognized by Ned! My life is now complete :)

liz!, Sunday, 6 October 2002 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm curious about the mind of the lurker. i am voyeuristic toward lurkers.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Thursday, 6 March 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I LIVE! YOU DESPAIR!

this was my secret suspicion actually.

Aaron A., Thursday, 6 March 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

On a lark, a lurker posts, in the dark, avoiding most.

Colin Saunders (csaunders), Thursday, 6 March 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

your post now here
for all to read
your soul now trap'd
naught to be freed

Aaron A., Thursday, 6 March 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Lurking is far less time-consuming than posting, which is mainly why I've lurked more. Also, I don't think I interest people here much, which is okay, so I'd rather enjoy the jokes and not have my ego bruised by posting heaps and feeling ignored. I am too sensitive and a bit prone to depression and I try not to feed either.

Posting after lurking a lot is problematic because you kind of know about people and are aware of a lot of the board's history but if you let on it seems creepy. (This is even worse if you have a good memory for everything you read, as I do.)

estela, Friday, 7 March 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what estela said. i lurk far more than i post for that very reason.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin, have you seen the A Void a common glyph or symbol thread. You should post that there.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

except that lurker has an "e" in it...

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

:) hi ailsa.

*runs away with hands covering mouth*

estela, Friday, 7 March 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, if you read the thread, you'll notice that I make the same mistake, and intended for Colin to do the same.

actually, I'm just an idiot. I'm going to go back to lurking now...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

eek, slagged off for not reading threads on the thread where lurkers are safe. Is there no hiding place here?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

liz! the lurker should post more. i think she has a life, though ;)

Maria (Maria), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

a life, maria? that's hilarious!. I don't really post much due to the reasons so eloquently listed by estela.

Dude, all the lurkers should create a club or something.

liz! (liz!), Friday, 7 March 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I join? I feel so much safer lurking.

celeste (Celeste), Friday, 7 March 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"so I'd rather enjoy the jokes"

Hey most of the enjoyment is one's own solipsistic enjoyment after posting a stupid joke.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 20 October 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I'm a lurker now. If I find a thread that I feel I could add a comment to, then by the time I've formulated what I want to say the momentum of the thread has moved on. Sigh.

Maxfield, Tuesday, 21 October 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Apart from the last one none of you are lurkers. So maybe you dont post very much, but lurkers, surely not!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't post anything for months and months. that quialifies for lurkerhood, surely?

why am i arguing about this?

i lurked on account of my intense love-feelings for a regular ilx poster. didn't want him to think i was stalking or intruding on his turf. i no longer have intense love-feelings for said regular, therefore, IT BEGINS!

you will all feel my power and might. be warned!

I'm talking tears rolling down my face and strange snorty laughter, lucky i'm the only one in the office today. My humblest apologies for lurking, i feel kind of creepy for lurking now that i'm "out". (i have a feeling this won't stop me from relurking directly after submitting this though, sorry again.) Oh, and am with Estela on the lurk reasoning.

Hiya. Big lurker here. Only regret it when I think up a good joke but can't add it to the thread I'm reading. ILX is a good laugh and ILM is easily the best place to read about music on the internet. Maybe I'll become a real poster one day, but it doesn't seem like it's worth the work to become an established presence.

Anyway, props to the following people, who are totally great: Spencer Chow, amateurist, Dan Perry, Ally, Tombot, adaml, jaymc, gear, Jody Beth Rosen, Alex in NYC.

what i meant was, that after lurking here and on ilm or about three years, i feel as though i have a handle on all of your various personalities/interests/internet personaes, but i am invisible... like i'm ghost dad. obv not in a creepy way, though.

calumn, Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm a lurker-- but only because I don't know which side of the fence to post on. Am I an hostile hypocrite like half of ILX or a geeky ultra-PC peacemaker like the other half?

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Friday, 24 December 2004 18:41 (twenty years ago)

I guess I lurked so long the thread lapsed. But I have been reading the highly entertaining posts on ILX/ILM for the better part of 04, contributing so infrequently as to go unnoticed. Most of the time I have little (amusing) to say...

In any event, I enjoy this forum immensely, regardless of my contributions to it.

Hi, yeah, I've been lurking on the board for a while now (maybe 2 or 3 years). I probably check out the site 2 or 3 times a day if I can and I owe a lot of my changing musical tastes over the years to stuff I've picked up through ILM. I would post, but things are generally super-crazy around my house with 4 kids under the age of 8 and two autistic boys, I tend to have my hands full most of the time. What the hell, now that I've broken the ice, maybe I'll pop in from time to time.

That's a great book. I am still mostly lurking. I prefer to think of it as "reading".

brandon larson, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

hmmmm... I revived this thread to see if I had posted on it before to state how weird I think it is that I never really post on ILE/ILM but read it pretty much daily. Obviously, I DID find a post from myself, which informed me that at this time I have been lurking here (with varying degrees of regularity) for SIX years. It's almost as weird as all of y'all posting all the time:)

now more than ever, Thursday, 19 July 2007 06:08 (eighteen years ago)

also I encourage other lurkers to similarly display themselves then immediately retreat (I'll meet you at the Orange Julius!!!)

now more than ever, Thursday, 19 July 2007 06:09 (eighteen years ago)

I always want to start posting but I'm too lazy to fight my way into the ilx community. I think it's especially hard at a place like this, when everything looks the same and all ya got is your username to distinguish yourself. Not that I'm complaining...I've grown to like the aesthetic.

Having read the ilx/ilm daily for a few years now I do feel kinda stalkerish with how much I know about say, Dan Perry's taste in music.

iatee, Thursday, 19 July 2007 06:37 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and joining you, I also just found a post of my own on this thread...but I can't beat 6 years.

starting to feel slightly weirder about it, yes...

iatee, Thursday, 19 July 2007 07:18 (eighteen years ago)

i post a lil bit now but i started lurking like four years ago in high school :/ i recognized some ilxers at pitchfork festival last year and felt like an axe murderer

A B C, Thursday, 19 July 2007 07:32 (eighteen years ago)

but you still dont know about nude spock?

gr8080, Thursday, 19 July 2007 07:34 (eighteen years ago)

i know, right?? there are a lot of ilx celebrities who i have no idea who they are

A B C, Thursday, 19 July 2007 07:37 (eighteen years ago)

but in any event be careful what you post because you may be basically raising a generation without knowing it. when people ask about my dad i say the name on the birth certificate is a sperm donor and i consider Anthony Miccio my father

A B C, Thursday, 19 July 2007 07:37 (eighteen years ago)

It's weird how well I remember this thread, even though it's already six years old and how it was created. I mentioned on another thread that there were lurkers, which baffled Tom E, certainly when lurkers appeared on this thread. I don't think I could ever lurk on a message board. I did on mailing lists but only managed for a few weeks. If I didn't feel comfortable posting, I wouldn't retreat back to lurkdom, I'd just unsubscribe. I never really understood how someone can just lurk, but then I'm just a social bee (har har) even though at times I feel/felt extremely ignored. Even on ILX I sometimes feel as though I'm just posting to raise my statscockness. I mean, shit, I don't think lurking is bad, I just couldn't do it myself.

I do think that the simplicity of the ILX layout doesn't always enable me to distinguish posters, especially when they change handles. And then after a few weeks I am too self-conscious to ask the person if s/he's another poster.

nathalie, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:01 (eighteen years ago)

at times I feel/felt extremely ignored.

I believe that's called "the threadkiller syndrome" - I have it too ("after I reply, the thread always seems to die" and other emo feelings), but I try to ignore it.

StanM, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:07 (eighteen years ago)

Hello?

StanM, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:07 (eighteen years ago)

:-(

StanM, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:08 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway... What I was saying. Oh, Stan, how long have you been lurking? Seriously, it's not only threadkillig, just ending up in between a gazillion other posts. Or when someone reiterates what I posted a dozen posts ago. I sometimes want to eat my mouse. ;-)

nathalie, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

I still lurk on some threads/boards here, but not on ILE and ILM. Never have. Found this place after a google search for some band I don't remember, thought I'd add my 2c to an ILM thread, got addicted, the end. :-)

StanM, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:14 (eighteen years ago)

I can't even lurk on semi-dead boards, how fucked up is that? I'm basically just talking to myself on there. *sigh*

nathalie, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:16 (eighteen years ago)

I'm too scared to post on the noze bored :-/

StanM, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:20 (eighteen years ago)

DOn't worry, they won't notice you. We're just boring waffles. ;-)

nathalie, Thursday, 19 July 2007 08:22 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, like that annoying stevienixed character who occasionally appears around here :)

onimo, Thursday, 19 July 2007 09:06 (eighteen years ago)

xpost to stanM - me too! although i dared to post on a wedding gift thread on noize board. i lurked here for ages before posting. ilx gets me through my boring days at work, and occupies me at night since i've been suffering from insomnia for at least two months.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

Ruby, how bad is your insomnia? :-(

nathalie, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

pretty bad, i guess. i'm not getting more than five hours sleep a night, and this has been going on for awhile. it's weird: i HATE going to sleep at night, even though i know i need to. i sleep for 4 or 5 hours and then when i wake up, i'm wide awake but exhausted. some nights i only get a couple of hours. i have two jobs that both involve being on my feet the entire time, but strangely i seem to be functioning ok. however, i'm really scared of the inevitable crash - i know it's coming, i just don't know when.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

Have you tried something simple like Valerian?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerian_%28herb%29#Medicinal_use

nathalie, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

i tried valerian a few years ago. i hadn't slept for about three days because i was so stressed about my exams. the night before my exam i took double the recommended dose and still couldn't sleep :(

and that stuff really STINKS.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

a couple of people i've spoken to about have suggested i try to get a week's worth of sleeping pills. but i think this would only be a short-term solution and not solve the underlying problem - whatever that is.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

Aww, I was going to finally come out of the lurking closet but it seems this thread is no longer being used for that purpose. Oh well, maybe another time...

earthbound misfit, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

A evening job was my solution. Melatonin, btw, is much better than Valerian.

stet, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

no, no, please do come out, earthbound misfit! and welcome!

StanM, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

hmmm, maybe I forgot to turn the sarcasm tag on ;)

earthbound misfit, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

I've gone from regular posting back to mostly lurking.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

im sort of a lurker. i dont post a lot mainly because if i do it tends to take up more of my time than i'd like...

ryan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

sorry guys :( second thread i've derailed in the last few days.
stet, i already have a night job, and a day job. kinda sucky. where do i get melatonin from?

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

It's pretty easy to get in American pharmacies, you have to import it to the UK, so I don't know about where you are. If you're working two jobs it might not be great though -- when I take it I sleep for 9 hours straight.

stet, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't mean to make you feel bad for derailing the thread Rubyredd :( Threads are made to be derailed! Sometimes excercising a couple of hours before bedtime makes people fall asleep easier.

earthbound misfit, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

Melatonin will be with vitamins at the store.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

e.b. misfit: i spend between 10-14 hours on my feet, plus i walk home from work (40mins) and none of this seems to be wearing me out. well, it's wearing me out, but not making me sleepy. i've also tried having a glass of wine - no luck.

i'll check out the pharmacy tomorrow, see if they have melatonin. thanks guys :)

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

I've read that taking a warm bath right before you go to bed lowers your body temperature and makes it easier to fall asleep. Have you tried that one? Also, alcohol isn't a good cure for insomnia. It initially makes you sleepy but later it actually has the opposite effect and makes it hard to stay asleep (if you managed to get to sleep in the first place). One thing I do when I can't sleep is get up and eat something with lots of carbs, and that usually does the trick for me.

earthbound misfit, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

yeah.. the eating thing is part of the vicious cycle: i'm not really eating, because i'm physically drained when i get home, but i think that's only making it worse.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't there a sleeplessness thread where we can talk about/with lurkers? :-)

StanM, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

i'm going away now :(

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

just kidding!

StanM, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

Give it a rest StanM, be openly cross for a change rather than all cuddly and passive agressive.

kv_nol, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

I enjoy being a lurker much more than being an active poster.

Bryan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

i can't say anything nice.

bastardo, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

there is an insomnia thread or two, for sure

see how i am not lurking on the lurkers thread? even though it says lurkers only and is therefore somewhat confusing? it is okay tho. ilx/noise has made me take a lot of things less personally/seriously, in a good way, not in a sociopathic way, i mean
of course, i do not often read/post to ilm, for time/sanity/anti-frustration reasons

so yeah, just post, guys
the posting adjustment period passes fast, do not worry abt being cool or whatever it is we worry abt these days, ie, no one on ilx is going to tax audit you, i mean, i don't think

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

If I had something to add I'd go back to regular posting, but I don't and I'm not worried about it anymore. This is an interesting site with many interesting contributors, some of whom I consider my friends, so I enjoy lurking.

Bryan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

hi bry

RJG, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i guess the other thing is that sometimes people feel like talking and sometimes people feel like listening and hey why not
xpost

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

I think the only reason I didn't post before is because there are like 100 posts a second here and it's hard to keep up. Today I don't care if I can keep up or not :D

earthbound misfit, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

KV, I know, Stan, he was being genuinely jokey, certainly not passive aggressive or whatever. He shouldn't be anything (except himself). There. :-P

nathalie, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks! And yeah, I'm way too lazy to be aggressive. Passive, no prob. :-)

StanM, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

jaymc, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

Hi rjg

Bryan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

Yay lurkers! I lurked for like 100 years and by that I mean about 2-3 with maybe 12 posts/year until this year (when I got a 40h/w job with internet computer) and know how many of you feel-- threads dying when you post etc. I'm a paranoid though and even I've realized that it's probably not me, and besides, the more shit you post on, the less likely it is that people will not respond to your stuff (if you post on every thread, can you shut down ilx?).

Anyway having a fair bit of boredom/spare time makes posting easier. I don't recommend being less busy, but, you know... yeah.

I still don't even know what FAP stands for, though :( I get the gist of it, it means "let's meet up and drink beers or vitamin water" but I don't see how that fits into f-a-p.

Will M., Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

i really never used to post much at all. i've been reading the site for at least 4 years now though. kinda like you Will, my old job would never allow me the time to get into a good convo on here. but latley i've had some free time to post a bit more and i'll continue try and do so. as long as people here willing put up with me. ;)

carne asada, Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

I lurked for a long time, then posted a lot, then old ILX went kaboom, then I moved, then I found nu-ILX, and now mostly lurk and occasionally post. But be assured that when I do it's excellent.

Phil D., Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

LURK AROUND YOU
THERE ARE MANY THINGS TO SEE
THAT SOME WOULD SAY
COULD NEVER BE

THESE THINGS I KNOW
ARE TRUE AND I WILL TELL YOU SO
THEY ARE THERE TO SEE

BIRDS THAT TALK & FISH THAT SING
AND IF YOUR HEART IS TRUE
YOU WILL FIND THEM, TOO

IN EVERY WISH & DREAM & HAPPY HOME
YOU WILL FIND THE KINGDOM OF
THE GNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOME!

Abbott, Thursday, 19 July 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Will, FAP = "fancy a pint?" because a bunch of Britishes started ILX.

jaymc, Thursday, 19 July 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

Oh you lurkers, do not despair that no one loves your posts and people may not be saying "oh my what a very fine post" because it is not true; well, the former is not true; as I love your posts most near as I love all the stars I have named; I remember you in my heart and write this run-on in your dedication for possible encouragement or consolance if you wish it.

Abbott, Thursday, 19 July 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Hi from a part-time lurker, former regular poster, who now only posts once in a while. (I'm struggling with the nu-ILX and new usernames and all that crap - don't have enough time to try and figure-out who folks are, but that's okay - it's very small potatoes in my life.) Anyway, cheers to all you lurkers!

I discovered ILX via search engine years ago and didn't know how to wend my way through all the threads, felt stupid and forgot all about it. Earlier this year I was organizing my "favorites" and found the new, improved version and I stayed this time. I only post when I forget to stop myself (maybe three times). I don't know any of the acronyms, lingo, what-have-you, and I know how important that is to some people here. I have, however, really come to enjoy certain people here (I even have a mild crush on a regular--I hope he is a boy!), and for a lurker, I waste about 10 hours a week here. For the record, I do pretty much love Everything, but I really really don't love Music. Thank you, Everything.

Hey, if you read this board and think "I'd like to register and start posting there," one bit of advice: don't register over and over with variations on the same screen name, or with the same screen name from different email addresses. I'm not going to reject all of them except one; I'm going to reject all of them.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

conrad, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

shaddap, you

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

RIP conrad...

nickn, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

Can't recall how long it took after registering before I was approved, but I feel like it was over one week. Does it usually take that long?

I did consider at one point that my request might have disappeared into the ether, though I didn't try a different email address or user name.

boxall, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

It shouldn't take that long. I'm trying to get back to checking it daily.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 23:30 (fourteen years ago)

My sock took about 2 weeks to get approved.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

I used to post a lot, but I have the feeling that most people have me killfiled so it seems like a waste of time. Kinda miss it.

Bryan, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

i don't even think most people even have killfile set up -- i don't

markers, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 05:00 (fourteen years ago)

even even

markers, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 05:00 (fourteen years ago)

Not sure if that makes me feel any better. No matter.

Bryan, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

Eight years and counting. RIP modest mickey, etc.

lurkers be trolling u

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Sunday, 7 October 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

Spammers also maybe?

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Sunday, 7 October 2012 22:42 (thirteen years ago)

Oh well, as long as they don't need to post. I got my irritation out of my system.

Death Grits 2 (WmC), Sunday, 7 October 2012 22:59 (thirteen years ago)

hmm, is that helpful post only buried here in the lurkers thread? seems it would be more useful elsewhere.

so i think i'm mostly a lurker these days. or, a lurker with occasional bursts of definitely not lurking.

arby's, Sunday, 7 October 2012 23:56 (thirteen years ago)

Arb's has a point,. maybe WmC's message above should pop up any time someone goes to register a login?

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Monday, 8 October 2012 00:17 (thirteen years ago)

ffs you really want to make it soft on them dontya?

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Monday, 8 October 2012 00:30 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know if every mod follows the same rule of thumb -- they may pick a login attempt they like, OK it and reject the other(s). But if I see same IP and 2 or more different login emails and/or 2 or more different screen names, I reject them all.

Death Grits 2 (WmC), Monday, 8 October 2012 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

how many new accounts are approved per day?

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 01:45 (thirteen years ago)

I approved three today, two Friday. The mods don't get together and take a daily count, so I don't know the total.

Death Grits 2 (WmC), Monday, 8 October 2012 01:49 (thirteen years ago)

I'm a lurker and an occasional poster, and have changed screen names three times since discovering ILX, using two, maybe even three, separate email addresses. I figured I'd probably be rejected for trying on another handle (which I didn't like - it's hard to find one under which you want to post frequently) with the same email address. I've had most of my threads ignored, but haven't taken it to heart. I'm pretty much addicted to ILX and feel as if I relate more to most of the people on ILE than most of the people i know irl.

qiqing, Monday, 8 October 2012 02:49 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, if you reregister a new account with an existing login (email address) it won't go through. As long as you don't register multiple times at once, should be no problem.

Death Grits 2 (WmC), Monday, 8 October 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

props to wmc for having to think about this stuff! i forget it is all going on under the hood

unprotectable tweetz (schlump), Monday, 8 October 2012 04:53 (thirteen years ago)

four years pass...

hi, i'm lion.

i just wrote this on the politics thread: "i get that it takes years of having little-to-no opinion and posting constantly to get any traction in this place"

been reading for 10 years, honestly it's been a blessing. learned a hell of a lot and shaped a lot of opinions. sometimes it seems like when you want to finally engage though, the above is true.

my post history will show me talking about being drunk, i assume. that's mostly fixed. anyway: you folk take of your own!

ilx is the game of pricks btw. you're not a prick lion, far as i can tell. iatee otm.

Treeship, Friday, 28 October 2016 03:26 (nine years ago)

it's an undeniable track. that james greer story about the recording: http://www.theweeklings.com/jgreer/2013/01/12/the-time-we-recorded-game-of-pricks/

thanks, i will. i think i spent a lot of time happy not to engage with a lot of the world. as such, i wouldn't self-describe as fresh blood.

soma's little yelpers (lion in winter), Friday, 28 October 2016 03:38 (nine years ago)

<3 you're cool

bamcquern, Friday, 28 October 2016 03:39 (nine years ago)

bamcquern, Friday, 28 October 2016 03:40 (nine years ago)

funny, cause my partner was like: 'you read this shit all the time and don't say anything? life's too short.' now though, she's advocating i get off the internet.

soma's little yelpers (lion in winter), Friday, 28 October 2016 03:46 (nine years ago)

being predefensive about why your posts will be prerejected is decent self fulfilling prophecy but projecting that out to the entire site is nagl imo, if a common snowplough attachment for your standard approaching lurker

tbh, darraghmac didn't respond well to me six years ago the last time i tried to enter gracefully:

darraghmac, you've been especially helpful: for a while, in the earlier part of this decade, i lived on hanbury lane in the liberties (off meath st.) and dunville ave. in ranelagh.

soma's little yelpers (lion in winter), Friday, 28 October 2016 05:42 (nine years ago)

Do I count as a lurker? I've posted a few times, whereupon the thread promptly flatlines.

ha! have many times contemplated the dn "threadkiller" but if you hang around long enough, plenty of regulars kill threads too, very equal opportunity the threadkilling

been mostly lurking myself for about half my life (found ilx thru momus' LiveJournal, don't kill the messenger he's made lots of good music)

but anyway thanks everyone, there isn't anywhere else to be quite like this, and I would know, been on the webernets half my life and all

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Friday, 28 October 2016 05:43 (nine years ago)

hahaha

srsly man?

i may not recall correctly, but iirc, that was a riff on having posted 'this was entirely intentional btw' just prior

if not, it was entirely unserious.

i feel like that should end in ffs but uh i dont wanna scare you off for another few years so uh idk hi

the kids are alt right (darraghmac), Friday, 28 October 2016 06:01 (nine years ago)

i didn't take it that way then; couldn't help now though that the two lurker threads i show up on in six years you respond to. that's the problem with not engaging: you're just begging to raise your hand and say 'hello.' swollen with silence or whatever.

soma's little yelpers (lion in winter), Friday, 28 October 2016 06:12 (nine years ago)

by take it that way, i mean: srsly. it's a lot to start jumping all over street names/nabes.

i lurked for a long time before i started posting - now, as an established z-list poster, i can look back on thousands of my own inconsequential shitposts and think 'at least i have this collection of worthless opinions and pisspoor lowercase 'jokes' to show for wasting my time on ilx'

yokohama fuckdolphin (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 28 October 2016 12:51 (nine years ago)

I've been posting here since my jr. high-aged nephew was born (nb: I don't actually have a nephew) and, although the urge to lurk was at times strong, I've found that getting knocked around a bit for shooting my mouth off has been helpful in my development into arguably the freshest and most provocative voice on the board (Variety's words, not mine).

I'm not a dummy. I'm not. (Old Lunch), Friday, 28 October 2016 13:01 (nine years ago)
