If he's lying, which could be the case, and could be covered up easily, he could make a "miraculous recovery", further enabling his fantasy 'everything is fine' narratives. If he is sick and survives, he'll sail to victory on a sympathy vote. If he is sick and dies, another Republican will sail to victory on a sympathy vote (and a de-energized left who are already only voting for Biden begrudgingly).

And see this is where, for me, it's a slightly different case than someone who is an anti-masker and went to a Trump rally and then later on goes to breathe near people.

I never thought "let them get what they deserve" about Trump anti-maskers. Because I know that they aren't just deciding for themselves based on their own risk tolerance - they're deciding for everyone they might breathe near. Effectively overriding those people's right to decide their own risk tolerance. It's fundamentally unfair and selfish.

But for a lot of people willing to get close to that loathsome man, they have chosen it and, deliberately, kept on choosing it. My concern for them, morally, is somewhat diminished.

I make an exception for those who don't have a choice. Minor children, domestic and service workers? They didn't get to buy in to a Trumpian conception of risk, but still he and his acolytes have been breathing on them for months.

It's tricky because I am realizing that the degree to which I am a bad person is in a very precise and narrow band.

I am pretty much ok with Trump, Trump enablers, and Trump supporters suffering. Not least because they are responsible for immense amounts of suffering theirownselves. I don't necessarily want them to die, but I confess that part of the reason I want them to live is for them to experience consequences, up to and including awareness of their culpability.

What I do NOT want, and have never wanted, is for innocent folks around them to suffer and/or die.

Once the virus has multiplied to the point of symptoms emerging the course of the disease is entirely a fight between the body's immune response and the virus' ability to spread into new host cells. All current treatments are simply attempts to ease the symptoms long enough for the patient's immune response to prevail. Trump is far enough advanced to show symptoms and he's very clearly a high risk individual, meaning his immune response can't be relied on to win that battle.

The monoclonal antibody treatment is still experimental, but it is the best available treatment that can directly boost immune response. They are jumping on it now because it is a binary yes-no decision and there is no virtue in waiting. The virus is already established and the sooner you act, the better the chance for the treatment to work.

The basic premise of Trumpism and the fundamental promise that Trump has made during his political career is that those who are with him will be treated one way, and those who are not will be treated in another, much worse way. Because of how Trump is—because of how avaricious and joyless he is, and because of how fearful and paranoid he is, and because of how unrelentingly aggrieved he is—this promise is fundamentally negative. Everyone that follows him understands and accepts this to some extent, and the less influential of those who lined up behind him either out of perceived interest or some rote and sour habit or pure servile instinct surely know as much. It was staged to make it look like he’s been working all day as opposed to lying in bed recovering. Look at all the work he is doing, he even goes to a different room for some of his work- here he is signing important documents. Then he’s up and about, and goes to his folder-leafing table and here he is leafing through important folders. He’s been working so hard, he even took off his jacket so he could leaf more effectively through the folders. When the reality is that it took him 10 minutes to sign his name with a sharpie on a blank paper, get up, struggle out of his jacket, and shuffle to another room to sit down again for another photo. Then presumably it’s back to bed for the rest of the day like a normal sick person who doesn’t have to put on a pretend show.

It's not about straining to find anomalies, it's about acknowledging that these photos were clearly staged to project a certain narrative which, when combined with the administration's propensity for falsehood, strongly suggests that he's not doing as well as they want us to think. To give a small benefit of the doubt, the most likely (though by no means only possible) scenario is that he's got a medium-bad case and is mostly stable but because of the nature of COVID they mostly need another day or two to see how things go. In which case "improving" would be just slightly on the optimistic side of accurate, and there wouldn't really be much to report.

“I think it’s just kind of in the air, you know — you’re going to get it or you ain’t,” said Dwayne Hartwell, 57, a former grocery store worker who is on disability benefits and lives in Charleston, W.Va.

Hartwell said there was nothing Trump could have done to avoid catching the coronavirus and thus nothing anyone else could do either. He wears a mask when he goes to the store but only because it’s mandated in West Virginia. Other than that, the pandemic has not changed much about his daily life — and Trump’s diagnosis doesn’t change much about his thinking.

“He’s pretty strong and . . . he’s got the best doctors you can get in the world, so I think he should be all right,” he said.

He still plans to vote for Trump on Nov. 3 — “if he’s still living,” he said jokingly, in a way that made clear he did not think the president could die of the coronavirus.
