very cool moment

symsymsym, Monday, 19 July 2021 17:14 (four years ago)

Very nice

Vegas got Fleury, does Seattle take Price? Seems risky/expensive, but they have basically a full cap to work with.

Hoping Josh Bailey remains an Islander for life, although he was exposed last time too.

symsymsym, Monday, 19 July 2021 21:33 (four years ago)

price is prone to injury. fleury's issues were different, if i recall correctly, where it was him mostly not performing for a long while when his team needed him. so, i don't know if it's a fair comparison.

i think it'd be a bad move for seattle to acquire price, but i assume he actually really wants that to happen. he is in the last stage of his career and would most likely retire there and be close to family, so it makes sense for him.

i feel like they'll take holtby, though.

Punster McPunisher, Tuesday, 20 July 2021 15:54 (four years ago)

I'd take holtby or quick before price

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 20 July 2021 15:59 (four years ago)

so sounds like kraken's not taking any expensive players?

symsymsym, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 18:02 (four years ago)

I haven’t heard of half of these drafted players. Supposedly they were no side deals.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 22 July 2021 01:55 (four years ago)

weird

sean gramophone, Thursday, 22 July 2021 01:57 (four years ago)

Yeah, you would think that Seattle would try to copy what LV did.

This time around teams may have been better at not leaving exposed players they would actually hurt to lose.

Carlos Santana & Mahavishnu Rob Thomas (PBKR), Thursday, 22 July 2021 02:06 (four years ago)

They did copy LV in the fact that they drafted a Fleury.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 22 July 2021 02:28 (four years ago)

pens fan here (as i've probably mentioned before itt). pretty bummed that they basically got two penguins out of this thing. one of which actually hurts a little: mccann via toronto after he spent like two days as a leaf on paper. tanev's a trip, but gonna miss jared.

andrew m., Thursday, 22 July 2021 13:53 (four years ago)

anybody else watch this thing live? chris fowler was so bad. painful to watch at times.

making splashes at Dan Flashes (Neanderthal), Thursday, 22 July 2021 14:26 (four years ago)

i missed that part! but it sounds about right. overall just a terribly awkward performance. with the move to espn, makes me worry that we'll have to suffer through him forever now.

andrew m., Thursday, 22 July 2021 15:39 (four years ago)

They did copy LV in the fact that they drafted a Fleury.

Two Fleurys! They'll be twice as good as Vegas

symsymsym, Thursday, 22 July 2021 16:40 (four years ago)

are the kraken now one of the biggest and heaviest teams?

all their d men are at least 200 lbs and 6 feet tall (except for gavin bayreuther)

and they have the two biggest players in the nhl in oleksiak (6'7", 255 lbs) and macdermid (6'5", 233 lbs)

the nucks are going to get pushed around unless we get some bigger boys

Punster McPunisher, Thursday, 22 July 2021 17:01 (four years ago)

re: the penguins, i'm sure they would rather have lost pettersson or zucker, but with a flat salary cap, room must be made. everyone loves tanev but he's a fourth-liner with four years left on his contract who's about to turn 30 (and his injuries are only going to mount with the way he plays)

mccann is a more significant loss, but he too is in the pens' bottom six when everyone's healthy, and you can't have everything. (i have seen him tentatively penciled in as seattle's no. 1 center lol.) they *should* be able to get bottom-six help more cheaply, perhaps leaving room to upgrade the goaltending

every half-decent team is desperate to shed salary; at least the penguins didn't have to embarrass everyone involved by trading away draft picks just to get arizona to take on their shitty contracts, e.g. flyers/ghost bear and islanders/ladd

mookieproof, Thursday, 22 July 2021 20:46 (four years ago)

Yes thank you Arizona for taking the contracts no one wants. Islander fans feel it was a fair deal for the most part, lol.

otoh at least the flyers, blackhawks and canucks didn’t draft a sex offender (yet)

mookieproof, Saturday, 24 July 2021 04:03 (four years ago)

The Flyers had Billy Tibbets years back (but so did the Pens, iirc), so they have already checked that on their organizational bingo card.

Carlos Santana & Mahavishnu Rob Thomas (PBKR), Saturday, 24 July 2021 11:11 (four years ago)

kraken dman jamie oleksiak's sister is penny, a canadian swimmer, who is doing very well in several events in the summer olympics

Punster McPunisher, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 01:55 (four years ago)

Did not expect Vegas to trade Fleury to the Blackhawks for a prospect, and then Fleury saying he might retire in response.

Caps resigning Ovi for five more years seems more normal, but am wondering what his age 40 year will be like.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 21:40 (four years ago)

all of western pennsylvania wants the return of MAF, for better or worse (though neither hextall nor burke are likely to be sentimental about it)

mookieproof, Wednesday, 28 July 2021 00:40 (four years ago)

pretty comfortable with the penguins doing very little so far -- the only deal i'm honestly envious of is dougie hamilton's, and they had nowhere near the room. i guess hextall does have a rep (unlike jim rutherford) of not making deals for the sake of it

might have taken (pittsburgh's own) brandon saad at that price, but that's about it

mookieproof, Thursday, 29 July 2021 20:01 (four years ago)

I wonder if Hextall is really there for the inevitable tear down/rebuild more than anything.

Carlos Santana & Mahavishnu Rob Thomas (PBKR), Thursday, 29 July 2021 20:36 (four years ago)

perry to tampa is very heartbreaking

sean gramophone, Thursday, 29 July 2021 22:08 (four years ago)

xp i'm still not clear on why rutherford suddenly abdicated in january; i think hextall was just the best available candidate (i cannot explain burke's involvement at all)

pens did win their division and had excellent advanced stats, so i'm not sure tearing it all down because the goaltending was an utter disaster vs. the isles makes sense . . . but of course they haven't addressed the goaltending either

tbh i don't think ownership will allow hextall to tear it down yet. they might not re-sign malkin or letang after next year -- much more likely to let letang go, i'd imagine -- but crosby (and probably malkin?) is there as long as he wants to be. which i'm fine with

mookieproof, Thursday, 29 July 2021 23:30 (four years ago)

Not suggesting they will tear it down yet, just that Crosby/Malkin can't be good for too much longer and then . . . .

Carlos Santana & Mahavishnu Rob Thomas (PBKR), Friday, 30 July 2021 04:05 (four years ago)

i'm still not convinced pens fans' goaltender panic is warranted, but i too am fine with just minor tweaks to the roster cuz i like what so many of them bring and the chemistry has largely been solid. gonna remain butthurt about mccann for awhile though. on the other hand, as a "reba" fan, we have a brock now. HAAIIEEE!

Carolina's poison pill offer sheet to the Habs' Kotkaniemi is hilarious.

Taliban! (PBKR), Sunday, 29 August 2021 12:08 (four years ago)

the pettiness is funny — and i guess it helps distract from both teams drafting or signing assholes this summer — but idg why carolina would trade away a good young goalie, let dougie hamilton walk, then offer $6m for a forward who scored five goals last season

habs should take the picks and use them to get eichel or something

mookieproof, Sunday, 29 August 2021 14:25 (four years ago)

mookie, I am a very petty person.

Yeah, I would probably take the picks. I believe the qualifying offer is 10% of expiring salary, so Carolina will have to offer $6.7M next year to keep his rights. I guess Carolina can walk away if he isn't worth $6M after next year, but if that happens those picks will hurt even more.

Taliban! (PBKR), Sunday, 29 August 2021 14:30 (four years ago)

really wonder how often restricted free agents are offered offer sheets and *don't* sign them

mookieproof, Sunday, 29 August 2021 19:19 (four years ago)

mookieproof, Sunday, 19 September 2021 01:58 (four years ago)

It's true, Isles have to be the oldest team in the league now. No one thinks the final piece to getting this team to the finals is 44-year-old Chara and J.P. Parise's 37-year-old son, but with flat cap + everyone overpaying for D-men, I'm ok (although not thrilled) w/taking a chance on them for a year.

Totally meaningless move - Philly perpetually delusional that they are Cup contenders one piece away and it must be the coach's fault.

hocus pocus, alakazam (PBKR), Monday, 6 December 2021 15:26 (four years ago)

i don't think they considered themselves cup contenders, but i'm sure they had designs on the playoffs -- the athletic had them at about 33% to make it at the start of the season -- and there aren't too many coaches who can survive getting absolutely crushed at home in an eighth straight loss

kinda wondering where the line is for lou at this point? isles have had a brutal schedule, terrible injury/covid luck and they're hardly likely to bring in a better coach than trotz, but lou has never been one to shy away from change for change's sake

mookieproof, Monday, 6 December 2021 22:04 (four years ago)

I haven't been this down on the Flyers since 06-07 when they had the worst record in the league. I kind of hate them now because of ownership's insane 20+ years of lurching from one shiny toy to the next. The organization consists of ex-Flyers whose only qualifications are that they are ex-Flyers. At least Hextall had some plan, but tried to be competitive while rebuilding, which is not a great approach imo.

I would definitely grab Trotz if I thought a coach would make a difference - it won't.

hocus pocus, alakazam (PBKR), Monday, 6 December 2021 22:16 (four years ago)

Such a cruel twist of fate so far for the Isles. This is the first year in decades where they were picked by people as a potential Stanley cup finalists, and they finally got the new arena they deserve after so much turmoil. And yet so many things have gone wrong. I don’t know how you improve by replacing Trotz. Lou did magically make a lot of cap space reappear though, so there’s room for changes at the deadline.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 7 December 2021 00:45 (four years ago)

Yeah, Trotz might wear you out, but it seems too soon.

He's the second player in NHL history to have a Gordie Howe hat trick on back-to-back days, joining the Canadiens' Doug Risebrough (February 15 & 16, 1975).

It's hard comparing across sports, so I don't know how they'd compare to the Russell Celtics, Jordan Bulls, Ruth-Gehrig Yankees, Brady Patriots, etc. But I remember them as so much better than everyone, and a perfectly balanced team: goaltending and defense, scoring, very deep.

The '76-77 team:

https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/MTL/1977.html

- 60-8-12
- 12-2 in the playoffs (beating the Bruins and Islanders, dominant teams on either side of their Cups)
- a goalie with a 2.14 GAA
- a guy with 60 goals, another with 56, six others who scored 20+ (a benchmark at the time)
- 9 HOF'ers? Possible that one or two got in primarily because they were on this team
- Scott Bowman as coach (so 10 HOF'ers)

Going to throw my fandom behind the Oilers and Panthers in the playoffs.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 03:46 (three years ago)

penguins are cratering at just the right time

kinda hope the caps pass them simply because i'd rather see them brutalized in the first round by the panthers than the rangers (1996 notwithstanding)

that said, the first round is going to have so many amazing matchups -- TOR-TB! MIN-STL! CAR-BOS! -- and i desperately hope we get BATTLE OF ALBERTA in round two

Expect #NHL teams to inquire about hiring Joel Quenneville as their Head Coach. Hear he wants back behind the bench and there is expected to be significant interest in hiring the future Hall of Famer. Q will need to meet with Commissioner Gary Bettman to be reinstated.

rags-pens going to a third OT, and Pittsburgh’s down to their third-string goalie. 138 combined shots on goal so far.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 4 May 2022 03:26 (three years ago)

that whole leafs curse was the biggest crock of shit i've heard in a long time. they have to be the most deluded fan base in the league. i have nothing against toronto or the leafs, but i hope they don't get past the first round just for laughs

Punster McPunisher, Wednesday, 4 May 2022 04:02 (three years ago)

i dunno about ‘curse’ but the leafs blowing a 4-1 lead in the third period of game seven vs the bruins in 2013 was some harrowing shit

Uh, that does not seem like a good idea. I thought Trotz (a likely hall of fame coach) did well to get a winning record out of a group that sustained a 12 game winless streak this season during a large Covid outbreak. Seemed like the players all really respected and liked him too.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 16 May 2022 13:43 (three years ago)

as the resident pens fan, that was disappointing

on one hand, even before crosby got hurt, pittsburgh was down a top-pairing defenseman, a top-six winger, and forced to start a minor leaguer in goal. they really shouldn't have challenged the league's best goalie

on the other hand, the penguins dominated the rangers at 5-on-5, guentzel scored more goals than anyone else had in a series in 10 years, and they chased shesterkin twice

on the other other hand, they very thoroughly blew a 3-1 lead. and they blew two-goal leads in games 5-6 and a late one-goal lead in game 7. and they got utterly destroyed on special teams despite having earlier in the season had quite a good PK

anyway i am bummed because i think they're better than the rangers. probably not better than carolina or the florida teams, but a round would have been nice

at least we have been granted battles of alberta/florida! although i do think the oilers' all-navy-with-orange-lettering sweaters are fucking awful

mookieproof, Monday, 16 May 2022 23:17 (three years ago)

After those 7-goal outbursts I thought the pens would close it out quickly. Alas.

I also dislike the modern oilers uniforms, too much orange. Much prefer the ones from the dynasty days of the ‘80//‘90s.

he giveth and he taketh away -- i think he had the primary assist on one of edmonton's breakaway goals in game two and he's certainly shutting down calgary's dump-and-chase game -- but it's an adventure every time mike smith leaves the crease and i'm not sure i could emotionally handle it if he were my team's goalie

lol the panthers are going to wind up with 60 shots and no goals

mookieproof, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 01:58 (three years ago)

it would be one thing if they'd never been in the playoffs before -- i vividly remember the senators absolutely manhandling the penguins in crosby/malkin/letang's first berth in 2007, from which they learned a lesson

but they got smoked by tampa last year and they were not very impressive against the caps last round. bobrovsky is obviously not vasilevskiy but he'd have been plenty good enough if the high-scoring offense hadn't shit the bed. tampa is good, but three goals in four games?

mookieproof, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 02:07 (three years ago)

It’s a shame.

Listening to the Avs radio broadcast can be fun since they are such blatant homers. They were just screaming “What’s your malfunction, David Perron?!” after his cross check on Makar.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 02:25 (three years ago)

i think there was a 2x ot in the first round? was really hoping oilers could make a series of it and really felt mike smith's anguish at that one. ultimately think that the avs are in best position to defeat whoever wins in the east and that's what i want at this point. like a lot.

tbf i think torts is pretty good at turning a bad team into a team that's at least hard to play against, and that may indeed be what the flyers need right now

but he's not the guy you want running an actually good team -- good players won't put up with his bullshit for long -- so a four-year term is kind of a surrender

Michael F Gill, Friday, 8 July 2022 22:47 (three years ago)

Pens refusing to break up their core. Might work? Seems like they could some more young guys.

Johnny Gaudreau is apparently leaving Calgary to be closer to family. Which means either Philly (they have no cap space), the devils (tons of cap space) or the isles (I can only dream).

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 17:28 (three years ago)

1) asking 75+ regular season games from both Syd + Malkin and then run the table against other, younger teams seems... unlikely.

2) Gaudreau leaving Calgary to join one terrible team (Philly) one team stuck in liminal space (isles) or one plucky team that is still maybe 3 years out with flabby goaltending is WILD to me

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 13 July 2022 17:34 (three years ago)

having a core that old isn't ideal, but the other options were worse. they weren't going to find a point-per-game second-line center better or cheaper than malkin at $6m. they weren't going to find a #1 defenseman who plays 23 minutes a game and is coming off his highest-scoring season who is better or cheaper than letang. rust is also a deal at $5m.

those guys weren't the reason they've lost five straight playoff series (the last two were absolutely due to goaltending), and i don't think those salaries should prevent them from addressing other needs. (really wish hextall hadn't extended jeff carter last year tho -- he fell off a cliff in the second half of the season.)

also it would have been pretty painful seeing malkin in another sweater.

the only takeaway i have from gaudreau is that he must fucking hate calgary, or darryl sutter, or something

also we need a new thread jimmy

mookieproof, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 17:46 (three years ago)

i mean the pens are going to be utterly fucked when crosby retires no matter what happens; not much point trying to cushion the fall with half-measures now

mookieproof, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 18:45 (three years ago)

e.g. the flyers just gave nic deslauriers (8-5-13 and 113 PIM in 81 games last year) a four-year deal at just under $2m per

columbus just gave erik gudbranson (6-11-17 in 78 games last year) four years at $4m per
