HAW HAW! Simon bows before my (our?) hero Jess! Blazing new trails for thine kingdom ILxoria!

James Blount, Monday, 18 November 2002 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, check blissblog for details. Has he ever been right about anything?

James Blount, Monday, 18 November 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

he's keeping me from being the 3rd most frequent poster on ILM at the mo too, by just 5 posts - outtamaway sucka, muahahaha

stevem (blueski), Monday, 18 November 2002 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I assume you don't mean this blissblog: http://blissblog.blogspot.com/

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 November 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

That makes no sense! I loaded into that URL just now and got a 'test' message from a Jessica, which is perversely funny actually.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 November 2002 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

http://blissout.blogspot.com

(my god, i'm really at #3 on ilm?! i need a job!!)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 18 November 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

HAW HAW! No I'm referring to Simon Reynolds' blog. Check any random ILxor's blog, I'm sure there'll be a link.

James Blount, Monday, 18 November 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Much is now clear. Nice list of links SR has too.

#3, Jess? ONE OF US.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 November 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the ol' girl's finally made it!

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 18 November 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway, point being, yay Jess. I know I've got that album around on mp3 somewhere, so it sounds like I should give it a listen (yes, I realize this implies I've given up regularly reading NYLPM, but then again I think I could say that about all blogs...).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 November 2002 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned just insulted half of ILx.

James Blount, Monday, 18 November 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to spend a lot more time looking at a lot of blogs, but -- especially the music-related ones, in line with how I've felt so nonplussed with music this year anyway -- I've more felt like it was a conversation going on without me as of late.

I'm beginning to think there is a great value in listening to music of all sorts from all areas and NOT talking about it or not feeling the need or looming pressure, outside or inside, to talk about it, just absorbing it. Perhaps this is an internal backlash from my constant AMG work, I'm not sure, since clearly plenty find much of interest to say about music almost daily. But I'm starting to get squeezed dry, I feel.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 November 2002 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

When I moused over the Back button on my browser after clicking on the Blissblog link, a little caption box popped up - Back to That Fucker Jess Harvell. I like that.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 18 November 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

hahahaha!

geeta, Monday, 18 November 2002 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do look but ILX takes so much of my internet time that it's only a quick glance.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 18 November 2002 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still number 20-something on the Users page. *sigh*
Jess is up there in the hierarchy.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 18 November 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Simon bows before my (our?) hero Jess!

I was totally confused by this first post because I assumed that it was trife and not reynolds. Simon's too common a name for for the Cher treatment!

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

That was sub-trifean at best

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no!! THAT FUCKER JESS HARVELL swallows PITCHFORK! OH NO!!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

that was frightening at best

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

My favorite is That Fucker Jess Harvel's "Rio".

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

"That fucker's name is Rio/And Jess dances on the SAAAAAAAND."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

That Fucker Jess Harvell II

A SEQUEL! I hope it's _The Quickening_.

BTW - that fucker is spreading.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

That is so cool -- congratulations to Jess!

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, the Voice music section this week is like ILxoria East (West?) this week. Meanwhile, Dan Savage responds to one of my letters (not really).

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

jess that's no way to talk about Shep Pettibone! (nice article)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 04:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to rain on Mr Harvell's parade, but there's one possible problem - it's not like it was DJ Sammy's idea to 'trance-ify' Bryan Adams in the first place. At least two similar style singles were out previous to that even managed to feature the actual Bryan Adams. Or was that acknowledged in there somewhere and I missed it? (am getting kinda tiredddy)

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 05:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Marvy fun fab! I admit to jealousy because I wish I was both writing like that and more aware of what's going on enough in dance music to differentiate. But it's the good kind of jealousy that recognizes worth. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok so not all that similar really, but the Bryan Adams + dance equation was already out there... so genius might be stretching it a bit.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 05:22 (twenty-three years ago)

so genius might be stretching it a bit

a bit?!

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

not "genius," "FUCKING genius." get it right. ;-)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 07:11 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck yeah!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 07:33 (twenty-three years ago)

nice one.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey. Harvelline takeover of entire pop world only days away.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
So did Jess finally get a job or something? Technicolor's dead; no sign of the fucker anywhere round these parts except for the obligatory rimjob notices. What gives? Not still tramping around the east coast is he?

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 18 January 2003 08:09 (twenty-three years ago)

you mean "Technicolor is dead. go home." get it passively-aggressively right, dude!

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 18 January 2003 08:51 (twenty-three years ago)

jaymc, could you deconstruct my immediate ancestry for me? Drop a little genealogical science.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

you have a younger brother. he looks like infrequent ilxor patrick allan. your parents live in edgware, north london. their names are hymie and rachel.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

That's not ancestry! I suppose maybe it is.

Haha! Hymie is my monkey's name!

Also, Gareth has asked me to stop referring to Edgware as London, so it is in Middlesex now.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

you said "immediate" ancestry.

otherwise: your blood is estonian.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

who on earth is "patrick allan"? My brother looks exactly like this (on the right)
http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/movie/custom/32/10002532.jpg

estonian.

Close - Ukrainian, Polish and Lithuanian.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

patrick allan is a british person who sometimes posts on ilx. he came on a san francisco mega-thread one time and said he was coming to visit his brother in the bay area. and he looked like he could've been your brother! but he wasn't.

"2. jess harvell’s Wolfgang Voight review is the #1 review of the day and gets an 8.5 Best New Review — found it really frank and conversational, it reads like she sat down with us to try to explain why she couldn’t get into the new Wolfgang Voight record, but it’s respectful and avoids what i can imagine was a strong temptation to dismiss the fuck out of this record, which she makes sound wildly unappetizing"

"4. got invited to a party at the pitchfork office this evening, honestly not sure if i’m gonna go, will probably decide at the last minute, but in case i decide to go i made a hair appointment for right after work, then gotta pick up the corsage and the tux and glass slippers i rented, hopefully it’s over before midnight or my fixie will turn back into a pumpkin"

fourteen years pass...

reading Jia Tolentino's profile of Robyn in the New Yorker and had to look up who the Pitchfork reviewer was. (it was Jess.)

“Robyn” became one of the first pop albums to receive a review from the indie bible Pitchfork, which called it “one of the year’s finest, smartest, and most engaging pop records.” (“Trust the Swedes,” the reviewer added. “They know what they’re doing with this sort of thing.”)
