Yeah, I think that's he'll be a force for republicanism in form and content! If he carks it in the next week and we move smoothly on to William the Bald, the window will have closed.
AIUI, bumping off Andrew is now his job, Harry is William's problem but can still be attempted while William is the Prince of Wales.

I saw that King Charles addressed a compliant Parliament today.
A week or two ago I went round Oliver Cromwell's house in Ely. I am aware that the events of the 1640s are controversial but I wonder how far we have progressed in coming from executing King Charles I and establishing a republic, to Parliament abasing itself before King Charles III.

― Mark G, Monday, 12 September 2022 11:17 (two years ago)
Yes, I don't see it at all. How is he in any way better? Nothing I have seen goes beyond the utterly superficial and ephemeral...he is young and has an attractive young wife. Oh, and he occasionally speaks vaguely like the people we converse with on a day-to-day basis, in Estuary English, rather than in an antiquated upper class way to rhyme 'home' with 'game' and 'perhaps' with 'crepes'.
Like, hello? People with normal accents, young people and attractive people can still hold (C/c)onservative views.
Other than that, it is just the MSM editorialising by linking anything vaguely charitable he does or says with the "caring nature of his late mother".
― Grandpont Genie, Monday, 12 September 2022 12:03 (two years ago)
William is much more agreeable for most actual Royalists who think Charles is too much a weird boat-rocking hippie (think Farage and the like) plus that William has always felt to them more Diana's son than Chuck's.
― nashwan, Monday, 12 September 2022 12:28 (two years ago)
William's statements are usually about conservation, climate change & mental health, which is a bit more palatable than architecture and alternative medicine.

He's 40. Charles has got increasingly crankier and unpleasant as he's got older - not that he was ever not cranky and unpleasant - I fully expect William to go the same way.

My wife and I (both Americans, FTR) discussed this weekend the idea that maybe it would be a good thing if Chuck were to say "Fuck this shit, I'm the king, I'm gonna be the fucking king" and rescind your new prime minister's position, dissolve Parliament by royal edict, and turn your little island back into an absolute monarchy. I mean, how much worse could he shit the bed than your last three leaders have done? And before you say "constitutionally, he can't" I say that it would be highly amusing for the prime minister and Parliament to be forced to deploy the military against a rebel king, and I genuinely wonder which side the population would land on.

Population would side w/ the military, as they would not want to get shot.
But of course Charles also has zero motivation to embark on this fantasy scenario - why would he want the headaches of ruling, he's got the royal veto to maintain the family fortune and that's all that really matters.

William seems to more capable of following his grandmother's example of never saying or doing anything interesting in public ever, and therefore remaining a popular 'apolitical' figure. Some of the royal reportage in Private Eye painted him as quite a ruthless and effective operator behind the scenes, as opposed to Charles who dithers and equivocates, e.g. they credited William with making sure that Andrew was fully cast out into the wilderness when the Queen was more inclined to be forgiving.

Reading the Wikipedia page for Diana’s funeral (which I didn’t watch)
Alastair Campbell later revealed in his diaries that the government and the royal household feared for the security of Prince Charles, believing that he would possibly get attacked by the crowd, thus they ensured that he would be accompanied by his sons. Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, initially opposed the idea of William and Harry taking part in the funeral procession, but ultimately decided to walk besides them, telling his grandsons "I'll walk if you walk."William later described the experience as "one of the hardest things I've ever done", and Harry mentioned no child "should be asked to do" what they did. Nevertheless, William saw the act as a necessity to maintain "balance between duty and family" and Harry said that he was "very glad" that he took part in the procession.

william iv captained a ship as a young man but was sidestepped for higher (non-ceremonial) office after he fell downstairs drunk and broke his arm

― mark s, Thursday, 15 September 2022 13:47 (two years ago)
yeah tbf there were plenty who demonstrated from the beginning that they weren’t cut out for it - but they were always given a shot! my favourite probably charles louis, eldest son of king james’ eldest daughter (she who the gunpowder plotters imagined would assume the throne after they blew up de ting). his first and i think only campaign resulted in a headlong flight from the scene in someone else’s carriage, which he attempted to steer across a river - and which promptly sank - and he only escaped with his life thanks to a serendipitously placed tree branch that was jutting out over the water and which he was found clinging onto for dear life
― Tracer Hand, Thursday, 15 September 2022 13:48 (two years ago)
"William attracted criticism both from reformers, who felt that reform did not go far enough, and from reactionaries, who felt that reform went too far. A modern interpretation sees him as failing to satisfy either political extreme by trying to find a compromise between two bitterly opposed factions, but in the process proving himself more capable as a constitutional monarch than many had supposed."

― calzino, Saturday, 7 January 2023 10:43 (two years ago)
It's bonkers how the military and others are saying "Prince Harry mentioning killing people is making other soldiers from that war a target".
They were a target during the war. They could be a target now if the Taliban, terrorists, or whoever wants to target them, for having fought in Afghanistan - never mind anything that Prince Harry says. It's not as if it was a secret that UK soldiers killed Afghans during the Afghan war.
― the pinefox, Saturday, 7 January 2023 11:55 (two years ago)
if anything you'd be quite fair to suspect that the soldiers that served with him could have been closer to a branch of Spar than any Taliban. More like an executive babysitting platoon than Taliban hunters.
― calzino, Saturday, 7 January 2023 12:03 (two years ago)
Bizarre threads of media pros saying "by golly my grandfather murdered 80 Germans with his bare hands, but he never spoke a word of it, he bottled those feelings up and only expressed them by beating us with his belt, it's the British way and any suggestion of anything else is a grave insult to our brave troops and our nation"
― Camaraderie at Arms Length, Saturday, 7 January 2023 12:26 (two years ago)
Agree.
I suppose saying "military secrets should remain secret because this helps our military power" is one thing, and makes its own sense.
But saying "the Taliban will be outraged when they learn that British soldiers killed people in Afghanistan!" doesn't.

After all, Andrew was weird and disconnected enough to think the Matlis interview was a good idea. It was probably impossible to be one of Robert Maxwell's kids and not end up somewhat insane.

guillotines are way too humane, these parasites should die slow agonising deaths (just as hundreds of millions of their subjects did) as opposed to the institution of monarchy dying way too slowly. I used to think as a kid that by the time we get to the 2000's everything will be dystopian and ruined, but in a cool way and there will be no tolerance for a constitutional monarchy and we'd be laughing at how preposterous it was that the UK one even lasted until the 20th century.

Originally the champion’s function was to ride, clad in full armour, into Westminster Hall during the coronation banquet. Flanked by the high constable and the earl marshal, he threw down the gauntlet three times, challenging to mortal combat any who would dispute the king’s right to reign. There is no record that the challenge was ever accepted.

While reading out the oath, the archbishop will call upon "all persons of goodwill in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of the other realms and the territories to make their homage, in heart and voice, to their undoubted King, defender of all".
The order of service will read: "All who so desire, in the abbey, and elsewhere, say together:
"I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God."
The oath will be followed by the sound of a fanfare.
The Archbishop of Canterbury will then proclaim: "God Save The King", and those willing will be asked to respond: "God Save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the King live forever."

Good times to come.
The king of England is going to make a killing from climate change. The crown owns most of the seabed around England, meaning off shore wind farms have to pay rent through leasing programs. King Charles has reportedly begun work on his succession plan, sparking fears his cancer diagnosis may be ‘more dangerous than we have been led to believe.’Earlier this month Charles revealed he had been diagnosed with cancer after being admitted to hospital for a separate issue regarding an enlarged prostate. The type of cancer has not been revealed to the public, but it was reportedly caught early and the King has been undergoing ‘regular treatments’ ever since.Nevertheless, the issue has reportedly prompted the King to start formalising his succession plans earlier than intended and ensure that Prince William is at the heart of them, sparking rumours that his illness could be more serious than we have been led to believe.

King Charles III revealed an unexpected source of spiritual relief after cancer diagnosisThe monarch sought for spiritual guidance from Greek Orthodox monk in these difficult times. In a surprising turn of events, King Charles III has reportedly turned to a Greek Orthodox monk for spiritual advice following his recent cancer diagnosis. The monarch, known for his spiritual sophistication, has sought counsel from Archimandrite Ephraim, whom he has been friends with for over 25 years. The King's friendship with the monk deepened after the death of Princess Diana in 1997, and it is believed that Charles contacted Elder Ephraim, 67, for guidance shortly after receiving his diagnosis earlier this month. The Abbot has spoken out about their friendship for the first time, stating, "We have a very good rapport."Charles, 75, has his own quarters at Vatopedi on Mount Athos in Greece, where he has visited several times since his diagnosis. The King is said to have a deep appreciation for ancient rituals and spiritual practices, often rising at 4am to follow the liturgy.Despite the diagnosis, sources close to the King are optimistic about his recovery. One source told The Sun, "Charles has a spiritual sophistication, a spiritual life... I believe he'll overcome it."

The shortest-reigning monarch was Lady Jane Grey who ruled for 9 days from 6 July until 15 July 1553 (although she was only proclaimed queen by the Lords of the council on 10 July). Her husband Lord Guildford Dudley was her consort for the entire reign, making this the shortest tenure of the male consort of a female monarch. Note: Jane's reign is disputed. The king with the shortest definitively known reign was Edgar the Ætheling who ruled for 2 months, 12 days in 1066 before submitting to William the Conqueror. Some records indicate that Sweyn Forkbeard reigned for only 40 days in 1013–4.[7]

I can't see the death of the monarchy at all within the next 25 years. There's no political will for it at all, it is key to all the main parties' ideology now, even the snp if it came to the crunch. If one of the main parasites dies or goes senile they'll just swiftly find another hamfaced cypher to fill their place, and the media will bow and scrape and call it the most important things that's ever happened in history etc. Since 1997 there has been a pact between the establishment, the general media, the press barons and the main parties through their security handlers about this, it's not going to change.

"Since 1997 there has been a pact between the establishment, the general media, the press barons and the main parties through their security handlers about this, it's not going to change."
erm, one of the main parties did break with this for a while, and there was a referendum on breaking up the union. It didn't go the way a lot of us wanted but it's hardly like some sort of post-97 conspiratorial consensus at work here that can't be ever broken up. We are seeing the cracks all around us.

I can believe that there's a less nefarious motive behind releasing an edited photo - have you ever tried to get three small children to all pose nicely for a photo at once? I can believe that they used AI to make a composite image purely because they couldn't get everyone looking good in a solitary shot and spliced a few together.
The problem is that it is so obviously edited and manipulated, they've done more harm than good by releasing it.
― boxedjoy, Monday, 11 March 2024 08:37 (one year ago)

this is still all part of the BECOMING, ppl
i: there was nothing in that little coffinii: whatever it is that liz is turning in the forests of balmoral is not yet ready to be seen on our screens iii: probably it also can't speak yet (still shrieking only) iv: but it can put ideas of sorts in nearby seeming-human heads… v: … ideas helpful to liz but not to her hapless so-called “family“vi: "its hour come round at last slouches towards" etc
"But I gathered that the blasted idiot had all the dreams McReady had, and a few more. He slept beside the thing when we stopped on the trail coming in from Secondary Magnetic, remember. He dreamt the thing was alive, and dreamt more details. And—damn his soul—knew it wasn't all dream, or had reason to. He knew it had telepathic powers that were stirring vaguely, and that it could not only read minds, but project thoughts. They weren't dreams, you see. They were stray thoughts that thing was broadcasting, the way Blair's broadcasting his thoughts now—a sort of telepathic muttering in its sleep… "

I'm compulsive photo-editor - probably everything I've posted anywhere in the last 15 years has had some sort of edit - and I'm not averse to stepping well over the AP boundaries and doing a bit of cloning and content-aware fill (especially if I lose some background detail in a crop or geometry correction) BUT if I edited a photo like this, it wouldn't even make it to Insta. 3 of the 5 glitches are egregious enough to start over.
But I also agree entirely with Mark S's reading.

I'd guess that Bill V did a quick hand-held burst (missus) and Kaff made a composite of the shots and didn't blend them right, hence errors. Tbh, every single time I try to do this (especially without tripod) I end up with the same kind of stuff, so I never bother. If so-and-so's aunt is looking miserable in the best overall shot, tough.

No equivalent of Lord of the Isles or that kind of thing, but NI is specified in his "royal style":
The precise style of the British sovereign has varied over the years. It is chosen and officially proclaimed by the sovereign.[1] In 2022, King Charles III was proclaimed by the Privy Council to have acceded to the throne with the style:Charles the Third, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of His other Realms and Territories King, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.

My wife's theory: something that requires a colonoscopy bag and/or Charles is dead.My sister's theory: something pretty personal, like a hysterectomy. My wife's pitch for a thriller: the royal family has Kate killed and replaces her with a near-perfect lookalike, and no one suspects ... except her kids. "Something is wrong with mummy ... " I can totally envision a sequence in the underlit palace, with the kids scared and running and hiding and nu-Kate in menacingly calm pursuit, like the end of "The Shining." "Mummy loves you, just give her a hug ... "

Throw in a dirgey chorale cover of an Oasis track, and Wife In Chicago has a Greenlight from Blumhouse.

According to Jasper Selwyn, the then-careers advisor at Marlborough School, Kate was all set to study at the University of Edinburgh alongside two of her best friends. Having achieved 2A’s and a B, Kate even reportedly had accommodation for the prestigious Scottish university all sorted out. However, Kate pulled out last minute and decided to apply for the quieter St Andrews University, after there was an announcement confirming Prince William was to start studying there in 2001. Kate then went on a gap year, starting at St Andrews at the same time as her future husband.

Probably! I was sharing some of the spicier links and rumours shared here in a private forum of mostly Americans and was lambasted from a few for being so "negative" with attempts to shame me for my schadenfreude and gossip mongering once the cancer diagnosis was shared. While I'm not for outright guillotining them all, certainly tearing down the institution and never hearing from them again seems like an ideal compromise to me. The whole circus felt gross when I first became aware of it in the 90's. I feel sympathizing for them is as gross as sympathizing for Trump's family tbqh, maybe that's harsh but it's how I see it. Sucks for Kate and her kids, but my emotional response to the news is a flat line, if not disappointment that it's not spicier.

a woman in her early 40s being diagnosed and treated for cancer is sad, and it's the kind of thing that would easily garner sympathy from the monarchy agnostics, so the idea that they didn't initially reveal it is bizarre to me. They can say it was for the sake of the kids and them having a normal life, but the oldest boy is third in line to the throne, he has never had and never will have a normal life regardless. And if they were worried the kids would see it in the media... would it not be traumatic to have them see countless articles about why mummy is missing and people speculating on that?
the calls for her privacy have me uneasy. I think everyone should have a right to medical privacy, but their lives are funded by public money. If you are a disability benefits claimant in the UK, your benefits are funded by public money, and you are expected to give details of your conditions in detail to claim, right down to how you manage to wipe yourself clean after using the toilet. It's degrading and abhorrent and the best you can hope for is a meagre amount to support your bills, while this family get the best of treatment and priority for it. I'm not saying it's right, but I can understand why people feel they are owed the right to know what's happening in the royals' personal business.

My experience of *being* a small child with cancer was to be told my illness was ‘a lump on your kidney’ and then precociously picking up the big family medical book when I was in first grade, looking up types of lumps that might be on a kidney and then interrupting my parents with ‘I had CANCER, right?’

Was trying to write something along these lines last night but I kept getting too angry and channelling my inner calzino (yes, I was wishing horrible deaths upon everyone in the monarchy, and eh, I only sort of feel bad about it).

If she had to apply for PIP (yeah of course she doesn't need to) even if you are going through chemo that isn't a guarantee it will be awarded to you. The accounts of cancer patients being turned down or needing to appeal/apply a 2nd time while falling into financial hardship has been a constant since it replaced DLA.

Being an ignorant lout of an American, I looked up Maundy money in wikipedia and discovered:
the British monarch or a royal official ceremonially distributes small silver coins known as "Maundy money" (legally, "the King's Maundy money") as symbolic alms to elderly recipients. The coins are technically legal tender, but typically do not circulate due to their silver content and numismatic value.
SO, this is one of those weird holdovers like touching for "the King's evil" See: https://history.rcplondon.ac.uk/blog/touching-kings-evil-short-history

Less than two months after Buckingham Palace confirmed King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer, sources exclusively reveal to In Touch that the king is battling pancreatic cancer and has been given two years to live. While the royal family has kept tight-lipped about the specifics of Charles’ illness, including the type of cancer he has, a source exclusively confirms to In Touch that the king’s diagnosis is known to be an open secret among royal staffers.“Many courtiers believe Charles’ cancer is worse than they’re making it out to be,” a second insider adds. “Even before the diagnosis, there were concerns about his health."

When I posted it on Twitter I juxtaposed it with the skinned corpse guy writing I AM IN HELL HELP ME on the wall in blood from Hellraiser 2. And that's why I like it.

The greatest-ever official portrait is the one of 1960s U.S. attorney general Nicholas Katzenbach.
"This painting was met with some criticism as it was considered 'avant-garde' and not in keeping with the more traditional portrayals of cabinet members. However, Katzenbach was pleased with the work and it remains his official portrait."

As for the portrait of the King, Yeo said on his website that the vivid colors of the glazes are “not only resonating with the royal heritage found in many historical portraits but also injecting a dynamic, contemporary jolt into the genre with its uniformly powerful hue — providing a modern contrast to more traditional depictions.”
"a dynamic, contemporary jolt into the genre.."

I hate to say this, but Jonathan Jones of the Graun is almost completely otm - the review makes all the correct criticisms this piece of shite deserves, but then gives it a completely unearned one star rating.
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 15 May 2024 14:26 (one year ago)
the review loses me when it demands a more realistic portrayal of Charles, the difficult, complex man he is .. blah blah .. he's a facile, selfish man-child. I don't see much beyond that.

A psychedelic sea of lurid reds and a clunking monarch butterfly cannot save this superficially observed and carelessly executed bland banality

the first thing it made me think of is the cover to Yoko Ono's 2001 album Blueprint for a Sunrise (which is a re-coloured version of a Hubert Vos portrait of the Chinese Empress Dowager Cixi)

the painting isnt good as art but its better than a lot of portraiture of important people at depicting a human face

as a study of a semi-human form it would be fair to say Yeo is no Lucien Freud, but he get's the commission and he gets the cheque. It's getting hung in the Drapers' Hall (some centuries old bullshit City of London charity foundation) so at least it wont hanging next to anything I like.

UK standards are at rock bottom, maybe some ppl feel like it's the closest worldly experience to shagging Princess Diana by proxy or something.
