I didn't ever find his character annoying. the show stays pretty violent, psychotic, and grim throughout. I do think the show gets a little funnier towards the end of season 1 though

A reliable tearjerker of a show. People who need something from a dog are matched with dogs who need something from a person. My only criticism of it is that dogs are often rejected because they don't show enough affection or interest on the first meeting, which seems a bit mean to me.

i'm remiss in not noting that Moka, as always, provided the great images.

I enjoyed Pretend It's A City but then went to see her live and at one point she compared the Oscar slap to the invasion of Ukraine.

Huge Fran fan but I also couldn't get through Pretend. I mean the whole THING of Fran Lebowitz is "she has such exacting standards that you only get her in very small doses," and the show is kind of the opposite of that. I don't WANT to see her off-stage and in casual conversation, where she's kind of an ordinary fairly funny person instead of the transcendently hilarious entity you get when you restrict to the very best material. They should have taped her for 1000 hours and made a 20-minute special out of it, that would have been in the right spirit.

The friendship of Issa and Molly was maybe one of the all-time peaks of TV for me

xp pretty hard to make a consensus with so many shows out there now. I think I watch more new TV shows than the average person and I haven't seen many of the shows listed so far, Maid included. Haven't even heard of some of them

Yeah, I watched more TV than usual in 2021 and voted in this poll and so far only two shows I've ever seen (Money Heist and Pretend It's a City), in each case just one or two episodes, and most of these I've never even heard of. Of course things will change as we get farther up the list. But the variety makes it a better resource for new things to watch!

Watched maybe 2 eps of Impeachment. It was horrids

I thought it had good things and bad things in equal measure, and got better towards the end. The only other thing I voted for thus far is the pure degradation porn.

Not gonna say Impeachment is required viewing by any stretch, but I thought Sarah Paulson did a great job as Linda Tripp.

Voted for Never Have I Ever, and will be doing so again this year if there's a '22 poll. Just had a fun "Paxton vs. Ben" discussion with my 13-year-old niece last time I visited (we're both Team Ben).

Hawkeye -- the first one I've watched! Did I vote for it? I truly don't remember. I think I remember liking things about this while finding the overall plot resolution somewhat questionable.

Never Have I Ever is a great non-guilty pleasure. I too am Team Ben, and have been from day 1.

(I expect we're all supposed to be.)

Ehh—Paxton is not glaringly flawed in the way he would have been in a dumber version of this, thus making the choice a no-brainer. I agree that we’re more than primed to recognize Davi and Ben’s compatibility, though.

First season of Mythic Quest was great. Second was less great. This season is so bad, we are considering not watching the rest of it.

Love some Bluey, though. Despite being two childless fiftysomethings, it really hits the spot. Or maybe it's because we're childless, given that many of the episodes highlight how annoying children can be. (Banter, please do not hate me.)

I adore Mythic Quest but Ive only seen the first ep of S3 so far where they "wrote out" Longbottom. Is a shame to hear it may not be as good this season - as an ex-gamer widow the show really resonates with me.

Girls5Eva is sub-Kimmy but yes that's sort of the vibe.

I really liked Hacks S1 and probably voted for it but the gooeyness of S2 kind of retroactively made S1 feel weaker to me. Probably unfairly. People being mean is inherently funnier than people learning and growing, at least in this kind of comedy.

Ava in Hacks vs Portia in White Lotus S2 is an interesting comp actually.

Only Connect is one of those quizzes where we couldn't figure it out at all until we'd been watching it for a while. Now we only get truly stumped in the final couple of episodea.

I love it's the only TV show I find myself shouting e.g. "REPLACED BY JEREMIES!! REPLACED BY JEREMIES!" at.
And then sometimes the answer is Call Me Maybe or 'Natasha Bedingfield singles' rather than Shostakovich or Lacroix which is always is on UC.

Catching up here. Lupin was a good old fashioned entertaining crime caper. Only Connect and Pottery Throwdown perfect comfort telly. Line of Duty was sort of corny (I only watched this series, the summaries of some of the earlier ones sounded even more ridiculous) but I enjoyed the some of the most gripping scenes and major climaxes were simple interviews.

Earlier LoD seasons much better than the final one. And better interviews too

Was super excited before and while watching Loki but somehow in retrospect.... I don't feel like there was much to it? I love multiverse stuff but part of it is that I like the intricate logic of multiverse stuff and I think this show just kind of stopped caring about that in favor of vibe by about 2/3 of the way through.

The set design of the temporal cop HQ is still great though, I stand by that.

I didn't vote in this poll but Station Eleven would've been #1 for me. I think it was brilliant from top to bottom.

My god The Other Two is hysterical; probably the funniest show on U.S. television currently.

I don't know where to legally watch The Other Two in Ireland/the UK. I saw the first season, but I haven't seen the second one.

Station Eleven was fantastic. So beautiful.

Yeah, Station Eleven was a real surprise for me. Went in knowing nothing of the source material and loved the first episode immediately. A few episodes after that started to lose me a bit and I was wondering if my interest was going to peter out, but this is a masterful example of bringing all the threads together in a very satisfying way. Absolutely nailed the landing, imho, and the entire series was better for it.

The lead actress looks exactly how I imagined her character in the novel.

Excited to check the last two inclusions

I couldn't get into Station Eleven, I think I was too distracted by the unrealistic grocery bill in the first episode.

I gave top 5s to Loki and Station Eleven. I am not really much into the MU, but I loved Loki! It was weirdy and headtwisty in the way Legion was.

BTW I looked up Only Connect thanks to this thread - I've been hearing the name for years but it never really crossed my radar before. But its fun! What is it with the British and their inscrutably difficult quiz shows populated with librarians and professors in obscure fungi and whatnot.

Gave Midnight Mass a try this year and liked it (I'm pretty allergic to horror). the episodes are drawn out a bit long but a great concept, and great performance from Hamish Linklater

I watched the first season of What We Do and between it and the first season I watched of another show that I'm sure is coming up, I can definitively say that I am just not into Taika Waititi's whole thing.

WWDitShadows is still a hit for me.

Only Murders is fun despite how distracting Selena Gomez is. Should have been Aubrey Plaza or pretty much anybody else.

Never saw Squid Game, Ted Lasso, or the Marvel shows.

Squid Game was really not for me. Aside from the production design and costumes, I just couldn't stomach it. For that matter, How To is also not for me though obviously for different reasons.

Agreed on Reservation Dogs - easily one of the best things on TV.

I really enjoyed Mare of Easttown, but a year later I don't really remember a lot of the details (unlike Station Eleven, for instance)

<3 Rez Dogs and How To

Only saw a little bit of Get Back at a friend's place, but I wish I had the Disney+ and tv time to watch it all. Ironically, I never really listened to the Beatles but love watching musicians in the studio, while my partner is a Beatles fan but weirdly finds studio footage incredibly boring.

I don't think anybody finds White Lotus great but it seems like it's entertaining enough to appeal to the most divergent tastes.

Get Back was my #1. Only by slapping a name like The Beatles on could you get a mass audience to watch something so long and process-driven. Kind of unprecedented?

Reservation Dogs is even less a Waititi deal than the TV WWDITS FWIW

Idk I think White Lotus is pretty great, given other tv shows.

i hadn't watched John Wilson when I voted, otherwise that would've been higher. or I Think You Should Leave.

I was thinking either that I hadn't seen a lot of recent TV (because most of the shows featured itt were completely unknown to me) or that I just watch mostly bad TV (which isn't out of the question) but I'm surprised to realize that I've seen quite a few of the top 20 and mostly agree with their placement.

Joe Pera Talks With You is a very very special show which everyone should watch (even though I've stupidly only seen the first season still).

The first time I started watching I Think You Should Leave I was all like 'I'm not sure I get this or whether it's even for me' and didn't actually get very far. And then I tried again and got through it all and thought it was decently funny. And then I would occasionally laugh in hindsight thinking about some element or another. And then I watched it again and thought it was very funny. And then I started watching it again recently and was like almost doubled over laughing at it. It's a grower that improves with exposure and may pose a bit of a demand for viewers who aren't immediately on its wavelength but ultimately proves to have more staying power and rewatchability than almost any sketch show outside of like Kids in the Hall, is what I'm saying.

Wow, #1 is literally the only one of these I've seen LOL

It's a show I love to hate. There is literally not one sympathetic character in the entire show. I wish them all to come to bad ends.

I saw season 2 and 3 of Joe Pera in an audience this year, one night per season, bookended by conversation/talkback with Joe and crew. It really reinforced my sense that this is gonna be television people will be revisiting decades from now.

Guess I should give I Think You Should Leave another chance. First ep was rough, with only the IG brunch captions sketch getting any laffs

i loved the third season of joe pera, really hope it can find another home. if not, i'll follow mr. pera to the ends of his tomato patch. or the earth

Joe Pera Talks With You is a very very special show which everyone should watch (even though I've stupidly only seen the first season still).

Grief chat, possible TMI, feel free to ignore: earlier this year my brother died, as I have mentioned before. He loved Joe Pera Talks With You so much that I haven't watched the third season yet and maybe never will. It was a thing we did together and talked about together. But my brother's best friend emailed me earlier this week and said "I hope you are getting tickets for JP's UK/Ireland tour in the spring. You know it's what Paul would want." So I will be going to see Joe Pera in the spring. Excited and sad!

Re: Station Eleven. I particularly loved Himesh Patel in this. I always, always thought he was a cut above in Eastenders, and I hope he does more of this kind of interesting TV stuff and less Richard Curtis/Danny Boyle schmaltzy shite. Also I did not realize that Nibhaan Rizwan, who plays his brother, is the brother of Mawaan Rizwan. And it's always great to see Halt and Catch Fire people in anything, especially Mackenzie Davis.

I know it makes me super-basic, but I love Succession so much.

I hadn't yet seen Succession when I sent my ballot in; would have voted for it (probably not #1, though), widening its lead a little more.

The linked review for "Them" is absolutely brutal.

I found the show compelling, a companion piece for Peele's Us (which it clearly was referencing in its title)--parts made me uncomfortable for sure. Some good musical detours, too.

Not doing the music poll as I've been mostly listening to 1947-1956 and doesn't seem fair to have any opinions. Watched some TV though.

I just finished Station Eleven, which deviates quite a bit from the book, but one thing that it kept that I appreciated was its narrative texture/plasticity.

I just posted in another thread that I also finished Station Eleven recently. I didn't read the book so can't compare but yes, the fluidity of timelines, characters of focus, and tone all contributed to what made it such a satisfying and warm watch.

Probably not much chance of a 2022 version happening soon eh?
