The owner of my bar gets on extended stretches where his after service drink is a White Russian with the vodka replaced by Skrewball. He calls it a Nutty Russian and I let him have his fun without commentary.

I had shots for the first time in three years on Friday for the last stop of our local village pub crawl. Russian Roulette - shot of vodka, topped with a lemon slice, topped with a little sugar, topped with a little 151 proof rum. Light it on fire and when the flames die down, you shoot the shot and suck on the lemon. I had two of them at the end of a few hours of drinking and it took me two days to recover. Might be six years until I have another.

I worked St P’s day, known cursed day for service employees, and it wasn’t that bad? Only two people even acknowledged the holiday and it was to order whiskey.

Normal Friday night at my work. We had a green beer special but it didn't make us busier.

Yeah we were normal busy & the show brought in the “vaping weed in the bathroom” crowd so maybe it was on account of that.
The weirder thing was that the next night I had a table that camped out all night, supported by a regular who secured the table for them by slipping a hundo to the owner to give to the pool (we pool tips). At that table there were 3 middle aged ppl and then their adult sons joined them and they were wearing green plastic beads. Who does that the day after St P’s day? Even if they went to a party why keep the beads on?!? Anyway it boosted my total and I was grateful.

Remembered last night that working weekend means sometimes ppl show up already several drinks deep to wasted. I’d never serve anyone who was obviously impaired but it’s hard to tell sometimes. Last night this lady (late 50s?, spoke at top volume 100% of the time, talked my ear off about Edgar Winter??) and a man who appeared to possibly be her internet date (a little younger, asked for MGD) showed up and were among the last people to leave the place. She went up to go to the bathroom and he strolled directly out of the building and left. I went home before she came back so idk what happened to her. Now I’m lightly haunted by it. This doesn’t happen to me much but it does happen.

People occasionally show up wasted during the week too but more when we’re open later.

Went to a bunch of bars on a recent trip, including some hotly tipped ones like Shapes for a Name in London. Many were good, a few were great. Our favorite was a place called Brettos in Athens, which is gorgeous for one thing but also kind of funky and laidback. They make their own ouzo, brandy, etc.

How much is a gin and tonic in your bars? I live near a pub but don't drink that often. They're the sort that always give you a premium brand little can of tonic even though it's too much for one gin. Anyway last time I went in it was £7.75 ffs (that's nearly $10).

This question piqued my curiosity so I just ordered a Tanqueray & tonic at my local in Brooklyn and it cost $14 (before tip). This is not a fancy bar btw, in fact it’s modeled after a Liverpool pub.

I should add that I was surprised by this myself, as I normally order all my drinks without paying and then as I’m leaving the bar I ask the bartender what I owe and simply pay what he says. I would have assumed my g&t’s were more like $9 or $10. For comparison, most of the pints here cost $8.

$6 + tax for well gin (Gordon's) and cheap canned tonic water iirc. We have nice tonic syrup for customers wanting an improved G&T for 8.50 + tax. A lot of our stuff is probably underpriced.

OK, this was a weird one.

I was at a bowling alley bar in a small WI town. It was packed and the bartenders were very busy. I had ordered a brandy old-fashioned, as one does in WI. I got up to go the bathroom, leaving a coaster on top of my 1/3-finished drink.

I came back and my drink was gone. I caught the bartender's eye and they said "you didn't like my old-fashioned" and I said "I barely got to taste it, now it's gone." They said, "you put a coaster on it and left, that means you were done."

This is when I felt like I was in bizarro land (even more than small town WI is already bizarro land.) I told the bartenders (another had joined in the conversation at this point) that at basically every bar I had ever been to, leaving a coaster on your drink at the bar means "I'm coming back" when you go to pee, smoke, play the jukebox, whatever. They claimed to not know this tradition and assert that the opposite was true. I even got some other people in the crowd, described the situation, and they all agreed that coaster = coming back.

The bartender did make me another drink, which was nice and cool, and no one was pissed off, but it was the weirdest moment of bartender interaction I have had in years. Has any other ilxor barfly experienced this complete flipping of bar reality?

how old was this bartender? I’ve always thought the signals that you were coming back were coaster over drink, chair tipped forward and leaning on the bar if the chair and bar work like that, drink left closer to the customer edge.
the coaster one is probably the most obvious and it feels like they didn’t think about it and justified their actions in a weird way after the fact

I've had BARTENDERS put a coaster on MY drink when I left to go to the bathroom and they saw me and knew I was coming back.

There's a good ol' boy regular at my place who always takes his beer to the toilet with him, so fucking disgusting.

In my (hard-drinking) town, the coaster leans against the glass, never touching the rim as that's a huge culinary/sanitation no-no.

Depends on the shot I suppose:
something tasty that I've never had before or wouldn't have ordered myself = classic
My choice = oddly transactional but still cool
Something gross like jager= dud

When I bartended at a chain restaurant in the 90s, a cocktail waitress once told me a previous bartender there would make a special shot called the "fuck in the forest" for annoying drunks asking for free drinks at the end of the night - he would just dump the bar mats' contents into a shaker with ice and strain them into shot glasses.
