One way was finding wealthy donors, getting a donation and then going to town with the same credit card with fraudulent charges to numerous Santos-linked campaign entities. I think Santos is a perfect culmination of the Trump years, specifically w/r/t how the US blithely assumed "checks and balances" would protect us from bad-faith actors but, it turned out, were often useless because it didn't account for a group in power becoming craven evil-doers--I assume due to some naïve belief in the American people not electing such folks, or something. ("The system will regulate itself.")
Despite Santo being entirely fictional, he's sitting there in Congress, with no consequences beyond embarrassment, because the only check involves getting his fellow craven evil-doers to voluntarily give up a bit of power by expelling him.
― blatherskite, Tuesday, 24 January 2023 21:14 (one year ago) link
naïve belief in the American people not electing such folks, or something
Reading backwards, recently, I realize I had something like this naïve belief circa 2015.
It's not that I believed the American people to be good (in a moral sense) or serious (in an intellectual sense). Nor was it that I believed institutions and norms would save us. After all, I sit (and type) on Virginian soil that has soaked up plenty of blood from 400+ years of fundamental disagreements about institutions and norms.
It's more that I underestimated humans' capacity to have adolescent nihilism last into adulthood.
The old right wing was cravenly evil, but at least it wore the trappings of an ideological foundation. It made claims to a higher purpose, albeit misguided and disingenuous.
This new stuff (Trump, Boebert, MTG, Santos, Crenshaw, Gaetz, Hawley) is just a middle finger in the air. Owning the libs uber alles.

I go back and forth about this, and was thinking about it recently after reading a recent Nixon biography. Was it preferable when right-wingers presented themselves like respectable politicians who paid lip service to things like civil rights or tolerating dissent by keeping their hatred coded, even when we knew they were bullshitting? Or is it "better" that the mask is off and there's no pretense about being anything aside from what they are, i.e., hateful shitheads?

Not really sure what your point is there, unperson— I, too, know the history of lynchings and racism in the US, and it is pretty demonstrable that those times never ended, but certainly became less absolutely pervasive when vocal, outspoken racism was considered uncouth at best and career-ending at worse for politicians. In recent years, it’s become normalized in ways that it hasn’t been for years, and you can see the results of that normalization of discourse.

xxxpost yeah, there was this naive belief not even that long ago that racists would wear the label as a badge of honor, and anybody who couched their hate in dog whistles and coded language in an attempt to shift the center of the debate (see: "argument to moderation" fallacy) to greater normalize what kind of hate is acceptable...was a small minority. which is why lots of well-meaning but hella naive people thought this shit was a thing of the past.
we saw troubling signs before Trump of people who were starting to feel a wee bit more comfortable saying things that would not have flown a decade earlier and not receive the same level of punishment that would normally be meted out. You had the New Hampshire Police Commissioner proudly call Obama the n-word and press actually gave this piece of shit way too much attention beyond the "old white racist cop is racist, house should be set on fire, back to sports and weather" treatment it deserved. The Bundys militantly usurping land that wasn't theirs, obtaining a platform to say horribly racist shit that got national press coverage, and also desecrate Native American land, and having this seen as a valid, harmless 'first Amendment protest' by the jury. Geraldo Rivera stated that Trayvon Martin was wearing "thug wear" (a fucking HOODIE) and that was why he got shot, and nothing material happened to his career.
all this shit bubbling up and then these assholes miraculously get an Islamophobic, white supremacist President, and finally make them feel comfortable saying how they really felt and jut amplify the targets on people's back. idk that this wouldn't have happened years later if Trump hadn't gotten elected, but lord did he accelerate it.

this is like when you're pumping gas and you want the meter to land on exactly $40... he just ordered very carefully.
The vast majority of congressional campaigns never recorded a single disbursement of $199, just below the level requiring preservation of receipts.
Santos reported 40 of them... Those included eight charges of exactly $199.99 at an Italian restaurant in Queens and another $199.99 charge at a Miami-area hotel where rooms do not usually go for less than $600 per night
In fact, his campaign accounted for roughly half of all expenses by all campaigns that cost exactly $199.99 — a statistical improbability.

Here in DC there are lots of spaces that are just close enough to the Capitol to be convenient, but just far enough away to be legal for fundraising. Occasionally for work, I see requirements for government contractors to have X amount of office space within Y miles of a given customer.
If I were a wealthy and/or smart person, I would rent as many of these spaces as I could afford to, and sublease them to needful entities.
I would also open a restaurant that was really good at charging precise amounts to stay under campaign finance limits.

heh, siena college did a poll and it revealed that not only does everyone in santos' district hate him, but also that the voters in the district are also full of shit. makes sense!
[Siena College] did a poll and Santos currently clocks in with 7% favorability and 83% unfavorability, which is fairly poor. Even with Republicans he’s at 11%.Generally when you poll the constituents of incumbent politicians you poll ‘approval’ rather than ‘favorability’. But I think we can likely infer that his approval is fairly low too.But there’s more! Then there’s ‘Should George resign?’ 78% of his constituents say “yes”.Was it right for Kevin McCarthy to put George on Committees? 71% say “no”.Maybe it will all blow over since voters aren’t paying much attention? Sorry, George. Fully 81% are following the Santos new “very closely” or “somewhat closely.”Perhaps the most entertaining part of the poll is asking people how they voted. First, 89% of respondents said they voted, which means a significant percentage are liars. But it gets better. 24% said they voted for George Santos, which again means that a whole lot of them are liars or in denial. (Santos won with 54% of the vote.) 17% say they voted for another candidate. 15% refused to answer. (Who can blame them?) Notably 45% said they voted for Democrat Robert Zimmerman which is almost exactly the percentage of the vote he got. Of the 24% of voters who admitted voting for Santos, 31% say they’d still vote yes even knowing what they know now. 63% say they would not have. (What’s wrong with that 31% of the 24%?)

I just finished that show and this is now how I will permanently see Santos, so thank you for this. Santos could barely keep his shit together while being interviewed on a friendly outlet (OAN.) The interviewer was giving him an easy out "People don't feel like you've made a sincere apology yet" and he just went off into "I have. I've done it three times. What is sincere anyway? How do you if I'm being sincere or not?"

i've been waiting for some kind of article about the guy who lost to santos, robert zimmerman. as recently as a few weeks ago, there was no wikipedia photo for him, and it just seemed like he was an anonymous DNC shill who expected to coast to victory and lost to a guy who was not only lying about everything, but who had been exposed for lying about everything by a local conservative newspaper. the DNC and zimmerman didn't notice, i guess, or didn't bother to highlight it.
here's one!
https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2023/02/01/robert-zimmerman-george-santos/
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — The man who lost to George Santos looks like a winner. Chin up. Good humor. Clean-shaven, sparkly-eyed. Navy suit, flag pin, walnut-hued wingtips. Robert P. Zimmerman has dreamed for 40 years of being a congressman, and so Robert P. Zimmerman is still acting like a candidate, even as his would-be constituents greet him with a sympathetic tilt of the head, as if to say: I’m sorry for our loss.“How are you?” two members of the local school board asked him, with near-simultaneous bereavement.“Holding my head high!” Zimmerman replied, undefeated by defeat, as they walked into a luncheon Friday hosted by the League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset.“As you should!” the women said.In a banquet hall of fake flowers and real Rolexes, Zimmerman worked the luncheon as if his congressional race never ended, as if he didn’t lose by more than seven percentage points to a man who appears to be a bamboozling cipher and who has become — even by the putrid standards of Trump-era politics — a national embarrassment. Zimmerman, lifelong dream shunted to a near-term crusade, hustled around the clubhouse of the Harbor Links Golf Course.“We’re going to get him out of office,” he told retired women wearing chunky necklaces, taking their crinkled hands in solemn fortitude. He greeted library officials and town supervisors with the same pledge: “We’ll get him out of office.”Isma Chaudhry, co-chair of the Islamic Center of Long Island’s board of trustees, breezed toward Zimmerman with words of affection and thanks.“But I’m losing hope,” she said. “I’m getting exhausted.”“We’re gonna get him out,” Zimmerman said, repeating his oath of officelessness. One campaign is over, and another has begun: an urgent mutiny against a sitting congressman, led partly by his vanquished opponent. The residents of New York’s 3rd Congressional District, a 30-minute train ride from Manhattan, are pissed. They’re affluent and educated, by and large, and they got took. They feel empowered by a unifying rage; they feel powerless from the lack of speedy redress. Santos has refused to surrender, despite a cascade of alleged lies and deceptions and legal and ethics investigations.“Trust me: No one’s more frustrated than me,” Zimmerman says. “There are a few times I shouted into my pillow: ‘Why didn’t this come out earlier?’”...At the Stop & Shop in Bay Terrace, Zimmerman joined citizens in collecting signatures for a letter asking McCarthy to expel Santos for his “lies, deceit, and likely fraud.” Wearing only a suit jacket in the 40-degree air, Zimmerman intercepted shoppers as they exited the store. Bayside resident Dan Cruz said he voted for Santos, called it a “big mistake,” and signed Zimmerman’s sheet.“We’re gonna turn it around,” Zimmerman told him.“We’re gonna pull through,” Zimmerman told the next person who walked out.“We’re gonna make it happen,” Zimmerman told the next person.

Kinda trivial piece here about how yes, Santos is a loon; no, most people don't care.
Gift link = https://wapo.st/3HVBgW4
I would not be surprised if the data presented here were accurate - only media and political junkies care about this inside baseball stuff, all politicians lie, etc. - but there is something flippant about the tone, as if to say "no one cares, nothin' to see, move along."
Thing is, MSM outlets' following this story is already seen as hypocrisy / bias by the right.
If wapo / nyt go even more Full Santos, in the hopes of telling people to care more, it gives that argument ammunition, and inevitable backlash

i've barely listening to that 25 minute recording, but in my very first random skip to the middle of it, santos starts talking about how he used to be a journalist, "hopes
"so they charged me with passing out a recording that they knew was illegal. here's the thing the thing - the supreme court of the united states - i was journalist at the time...i'm coming over here...and i hope that doesn't go anywhere... but anyway, the supreme court had ruled that journalists are allowed to publish things. so let's say charlie gets really mad at you and he goes to the wall street journal and gives them a bunch of information..."
someone in the room makes the incredibly smarmy joke "i have an NDA for 3 years...that i WILL hold you accountable too" *smarmy laughter, very fake, long* "...I love this kid!"
Santos laughs along, without realizing or caring that he's the butt of the joke, and continues to speak about whatever he's talking about with 100% confidence
then the person he's talking to mentions that he has a NDA "

Write the beginning of George Santos' autobiography
"My name is George Santos and I was born in a small fishing village on the coast of Brazil. I grew up in a tight-knit community, surrounded by the sea and a supportive family. I was the youngest of five children and the only boy in the family. Growing up, I was constantly surrounded by the love of my parents and siblings, and the hustle and bustle of our small fishing village.
From an early age, I was fascinated by the ocean and the mysteries that it held. I spent my days playing in the water, exploring the shoreline, and learning to fish with my father. I felt a deep connection to the sea, and I knew that whatever path I chose, it would involve the ocean in some way.
My parents encouraged my passion, and when I was just fifteen years old, I set off on my first fishing expedition with my father and some of the other men in the village. It was an incredible experience and I was hooked. From that moment on, I knew that I wanted to make a career out of fishing and adventure."

For a long time I used to go to bed early. Sometimes, when I had put out my candle, my eyes would close so quickly that I had not even time to say "I'm going to sleep." And half an hour later the thought that it was time to go to sleep would awaken me; I would try to put away the book which, I imagined, was still in my hands, and to blow out the light; I had been thinking all the time, while I was asleep, of what I had just been reading, but my thoughts had run into a channel of their own.

Rep. George Santos was charged with theft in Pennsylvania’s Amish Country in 2017 after a series of bad checks were written in his name to dog breeders, according to the court and a lawyer friend who helped him address the charge.Just days after $15,125 in checks were made out for “puppies,” according to the memo lines, Santos held an adoption event at a Staten Island pet store with his animal rescue charity Friends of Pets United, according to the store’s Instagram account and a person who attended the event. The charge was dismissed and his record expunged after Santos claimed someone had stolen his checkbook, according to the court and the lawyer.

Here's that Queens restaurant again! I'm sure the bill came out to exactly $199.99:
Santos, then a regional director for Harbor City, promptly invited her and her client to dinner, Bogosian said in "Campaign of Deceit," which was released Thursday. She said when they arrived for the meal at Il Bacco, an Italian restaurant in Queens, she was brought into a "huge room" with "one table in the middle."
"He asked for a $300,000 principal investment, and he essentially said the client was not allowed to know what it was being invested in at all," Bogosian said, adding that she didn't like the sound of it. Bogosian's client turned Santos down.

I had to do actual work for 20 years before I got a completely bullshit job in an entirely made-up industry.
It's not fair.
Why does someone like Santos just get handed shit, entire businesses whose "work" is amorphous vague buzzwords like "proactively leveraging synergies" or whatever?
What does any of it even MEAN? Like, do you go to work each day and sit at a desk and explore the investment potential of synergistic opportunities while proactively leveraging economies of scale in an agile environment from 8:00 to 4:30?

I'm completely serious. Like, literally, what is the shape of an actual work day of someone who "works" in this imaginary space? Is it meetings and phone calls? Do you have to read things? Send emails?
I readily admit that my own job is probably bullshit but the Santosverse seems to be a whole new level of bullshit where you just incorporate and money somehow just rolls in.
If it's that easy, why isn't everyone doing it? Like, why bother growing food or making shoes or writing vampire books or walking other people's dogs or painting houses or... anything, really?
If all you need to do is come up with a fancy-sounding name and get someone to file paperwork, then millions of dollars arrive...

RIO DE JANEIRO — Rep. George Santos signed a deal with Brazilian prosecutors Thursday in which the New York Republican confessed to theft and agreed to pay restitution and fines if prosecutors agree to drop the criminal case against him, bringing a likely resolution in a case that has tailed the embattled politician for more than a decade.
Santos appeared virtually Thursday afternoon at the criminal court hearing in the Rio suburb of Niterói, during which he was given 30 days to pay around $2,000 in fines and $2,800 to the victim. The case won’t be dismissed until the payments are made, court officials said.

His defense argues the three people who helped provide Santos' bond "are likely to suffer great distress, may lose their jobs, and God forbid, may suffer physical injury." "There is little doubt that the suretors will suffer some unnecessary form of retaliation if their identities and employment are revealed," Santos' motion also said. It closed with the declaration, "My client would rather surrender to pretrial detainment than subject these suretors to what will inevitably come."

Parizzi said her friendship with Santos finally ruptured in the fall of 2014. She said she’d recently petitioned the United States for asylum, and while the case was pending, she and Bruna stayed with Santos and his then-partner, Pedro Vilarva. The living situation was tense. Vilarva said he was beginning to doubt Santos. “Everything was fake stories,” Vilarva told The Post.
One day, Parizzi and Vilarva accused Santos of stealing from them. “He pawned my phone,” Vilarva said. Parizzi, who soon moved with her daughter into a homeless shelter, said her jewelry had been taken. In Facebook messages with Santos she shared with The Post, she pleaded for the jewelry’s return.
“They aren’t your things,” she wrote on Feb. 7, 2015. “Why is this so complicated?”
Over the coming weeks, the messages show, he responded to her pleas with insults and accused her of sabotaging his relationship with Vilarva.
“An ingrate filled with evil,” he called her.
“A fat dump no one wants,” he called her.
“Crawl back into the hole you came from, snake,” he told her.

What I'd settle for: people like him to be removed from positions of power. Preferably with some punishment for the manifold deceptions and grifts.
What I'll probably get: this guy skating away with precisely zero consequences, and with a self-serving narrative about how he's the real victim here.

If there was a single ounce of ETHICS in the “Ethics committee”, they would have not released this biased report. The Committee went to extraordinary lengths to smear myself and my legal team about me not being forthcoming (My legal bills suggest otherwise).
It is a disgusting politicized smear that shows the depths of how low our federal government has sunk. Everyone who participated in this grave miscarriage of Justice should all be ashamed of themselves.
We the People desperately need an Article V Constitutional Convention.
We are quickly approaching $34 trillion dollars in debt, the government is continuously on the verge of a shutdown, our southern border is wide open, our current President is the head of an influence peddling crime family, and all this Congress wants to do is attack their political enemies with tit for tat unconstitutional censures, impeachments, expulsions and ethics investigations. THE TIME IS NOW FOR THE STATES TO RISE UP AND COMMENCE AN ARTICLE V CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION!
I’ve come to expect vitriol like this from political opposition but not from the hallowed halls of public service.
I will remain steadfast in fighting for my rights and for defending my name in the face of adversity. I am humbled yet again and reminded that I am human and I have flaws, but I will not stand by as I am stoned by those who have flaws themselves. I will continue on my mission to serve my constituents up until I am allowed. I will however NOT be seeking re-election for a second term in 2024 as my family deserves better than to be under the gun from the press all the time.
Public service life was never a goal or a dream, but I stepped up to the occasion when I felt my country needed it most. I will 100% continue to maintain my commitment to my conservative values in my remaining time in Congress.

Santos, who described himself in the conversation as the Republican “It Girl” as well as the “Mary Magdalene of the United States Congress,” defiantly declared: “I’m not leaving.”
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/11/27/george-santos-expel-congress/
Embattled Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) is predicting he will be expelled from Congress as early as this week following the release of a scathing report from the House Ethics Committee that found “substantial evidence” that he knowingly violated ethics guidelines, House rules and criminal laws.In a three-hour-long, expletive-laden conversation held on X Spaces, Santos declined to comment on the array of allegations brought up by the report, claiming that his words could be used against him in an ongoing criminal case in which he faces 23 federal charges, including fraud, money laundering, falsifying records and aggravated identity theft.Santos did, however, describe the Ethics Committee report as “slanderous” and claimed that his colleagues are trying to force him out of his House seat. He also accused Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest (R-Miss.) of “weaponizing” his position and publishing a “hit-piece” against him.Santos, who described himself in the conversation as the Republican “It Girl” as well as the “Mary Magdalene of the United States Congress,” defiantly declared: “I’m not leaving.”“Come hell or high water, it’s done when I say it’s done,” he said during the conversation on Friday night.Still, the lawmaker appeared to believe his fate is sealed.“I know I’m going to get expelled when this expulsion resolution goes to the floor,” said Santos, referring to a motion to remove him that Guest introduced on Nov. 17. “I’ve done the math over and over, and it doesn’t look really good.”...During the X Spaces conversation, Santos said he does not want to continue working with “with a bunch of hypocrites” in Congress, whom he accused of committing more severe infractions than him, including being “more worried about getting drunk every night” with lobbyists.Santos, without providing evidence, also accused his colleagues of trying to “sell off the American people” and of voting while hung over.“They all act like they’re in ivory towers with white pointy hats and they’re untouchable,” he said. “Within the ranks of United States Congress, there’s felons galore.”Santos also zeroed in on Guest, challenging the Mississippi Republican to “be a man” and quickly move the resolution forward.A spokeswoman for Guest did not immediately respond to a request for comment. When the Ethics Committee released the report, Guest, in an accompanying statement, said that the evidence uncovered by the investigation into Santos “is more than sufficient to warrant punishment and the most appropriate punishment, is expulsion.”On Friday, Santos said he will wear his expulsion “like a badge of honor.”“I’ll be expelled because people simply did not like me,” he said.

tgi friday lore:
Most TGI Fridays have a propeller and a rowing scull on display as part of their antiques, which are actually a part of a story told to all TGI Fridays employees; the scull always contains a pair of saddle shoes and a bottle of champagne to remind employees of the value of teamwork, leadership, and celebrating success. The propeller is always above or near the bar. The thought is that the bar "propels" the restaurant.

What I want: people like him to either get the help they need or, at least, remain far from the levers of power. What I'd settle for: people like him to be removed from positions of power. Preferably with some punishment for the manifold deceptions and grifts. What I'll probably get: this guy skating away with precisely zero consequences, and with a self-serving narrative about how he's the real victim here.Sigh.― Pontius Pilates (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, August 31, 2023 2:20 PM (three months ago)

He has, in the intervening four days, stumbled across a path to making a living that dwarfs the $174,000 salary he earned as a member of Congress. In fact, Santos said — and screenshots and the CEO of Cameo confirmed — that he has lined up more than that sum in his first 48 hours on the platform....Santos “is going to be an absolute whale,” Cameo’s founder and CEO, Steven Galanis, told Semafor. His launch, Galanis said, is among the platform’s best ever: “Sarah Jessica Parker, Bon Jovi — he’s putting numbers up like that,” he said.

must be some teeth to the dispute too, despite claiming he had a bunch of these on Monday that they'd show throughout the week they haven't done any since

leaning way too hard into this villain shit now. dude had an impressive run but he's basically just a more successful version of Scaramucci. feel like he's got about 2 weeks of this quasi-fame left
Ziwe: What can we do to get you to go away?George Santos: Stop inviting me to your gigs. Ziwe: The lesson is to stop inviting you places?George Santos: But you can’t cuz people want the content.pic.twitter.com/Osz05aw9qL— philip lewis (@Phil_Lewis_) December 18, 2023

headline good: Republicans livid as chaos threatens to cannibalize House majority
final paragraph better: “Amid Friday's chaos, disgraced former Rep. George Santos announced he's leaving the Republican Party to run for Congress in New York as an independent — saying the GOP was too embarrassing.”

Kitara makes a cameo on.. well, Cameo
“It’s your favourite, Kitara. After 18 years in the closet, George Santos pulled me back out, whatever,” Mr. Santos says in the footage.
