cf Who is the oldest person regularly posting on ILX?

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 19 February 2023 19:05 (two years ago)

Well, I'm out of the running.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 19 February 2023 19:52 (two years ago)

Cerebral Caustic has just been banned, they had to have been 15 or 16.

nah, they were still mad about sarah records not getting their due at the time. they seem solidly gen x to me

I used to be, but that was 20 years ago

who are the currently active twenty somethings of ILX. do they exist?

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Monday, 20 February 2023 02:32 (two years ago)

their existence is becoming doubtful

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 20 February 2023 03:24 (two years ago)

what does ilx have to offer a 20 something?

Yerac, Monday, 20 February 2023 03:26 (two years ago)

they might just conceivably exist on ILM and simply not be aware of this thread

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 20 February 2023 03:27 (two years ago)

why wouldn't they just post on a relevant subreddit?

Yerac, Monday, 20 February 2023 03:29 (two years ago)

we could tell the 20 something about the good ol days

President of Destiny Encounters International (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 February 2023 03:31 (two years ago)

the young people like to hear about how good they have it, compared to the way it was. but also how the hard days shaped who were were and made us stronger and more resilient, compared to how naive they are. they will have it coming. it's good for them to know that, so they can be prepared

President of Destiny Encounters International (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 February 2023 03:32 (two years ago)

(shakes his cane at KM) now cut that out, young man!

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 20 February 2023 03:33 (two years ago)

they can also get that on reddit, but with more biting humor and less concentrated pathos.

Yerac, Monday, 20 February 2023 03:34 (two years ago)

where is my cane? my back hurts too ya know

President of Destiny Encounters International (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 February 2023 03:35 (two years ago)

There are definitely 20-somethings on ILX! (Not me, to be clear; I was in my twenties way back when M*mus made me aware of its existence!)

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 20 February 2023 04:12 (two years ago)

what's nice about reddit is that you can get a numerical rating on the value of everything that you do, whether it's a single post or the accumulation of everything you've ever said in public. you can boil it down to a number. it some ways it's a precursor the the crypto / internet of all things dream of assigning a value to everything in life so that everyone and everything knows exactly where it stands in comparison to others

President of Destiny Encounters International (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 February 2023 04:15 (two years ago)

it doesn't need to be reddit. i just inserted a highly trafficked/known site.

is there still a cost to maintaining ilx?

Yerac, Monday, 20 February 2023 04:22 (two years ago)

yep! stet and others do a thread every couple years to raise funds. the money is always raised within like 2 minutes

President of Destiny Encounters International (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 February 2023 04:23 (two years ago)

yeah i haven't seen that thread in a while. I didn't know if costs had come down or were up.

Yerac, Monday, 20 February 2023 04:25 (two years ago)

I refer you to Marissa’s board description on “l Rate Everything”

Mark G, Monday, 20 February 2023 08:47 (two years ago)

reddit is bad for any sort of real or interesting discussion & the format of reddit encourages a tendency towards particularly bland consensus tastes

Seems like I've posted around 600 times a year since 2000? Which seems extraordinarily high, given I've said nothing for weeks on end (and say nothing when I do post).

But I suppose there are the odd days like today, where I go hog wild and hit three threads.

Michael Jones, Monday, 20 February 2023 18:21 (two years ago)

No caps is such a young person thing. I wrote all my e-mails in no caps in my early 20s. Sometimes with line breaks between every thought. The practice wasn't aesthetic so much as I would be travelling ~2002/2003 and the only way to respond to e-mails was in those coin-op internet kiosks that were around for a while. The keys were sticky and made of aluminium and so it made sense to omit capitals and punctuation. Then a friend got mad and drunk at me one day and said something awful about my e-mail style. Idk if I should repeat what he said because it was so harsh. No, I'm redacting it. It was really harsh and problematic. Since then I've capitalised everything and done correct punctuation.

mark s, Monday, 20 February 2023 18:52 (two years ago)

xp yeah I did this in my early twenties, got bored with it in my late twenties, seems an affectation if you’re pointing it out tbh

better than whoever you are (gyac), Monday, 20 February 2023 18:53 (two years ago)

I think the amount of time I spent on BlackBerry messenger helped cos that would autocapitalise everything and I’ll take the quick reply over aesthetic any day

better than whoever you are (gyac), Monday, 20 February 2023 18:54 (two years ago)

I didn't write with no caps in my teens/20s, but I did use an excessive number of ellipses...

la vie wokisme (voodoo chili), Monday, 20 February 2023 19:29 (two years ago)

It's not such a sad story. "How much of it is an affectation": it wasn't by choice that I started composing e-mails like that, but the tone and content of my e-mails definitely shifted in a way to suit the format. So it kind of became 50/50. Like if the only way you can communicate is by haiku, then your communications will not only take the form of haiku but also develop the tone of haiku. After I got home, and had my desktop computer to work from, the format of these non-capitalised e-mails persisted, for two years. Then a friend got drunk and said something mean about it. And I wrote back, and composed all subsequent e-mails, in the same fashion as I am posting at this present time.

Blessed Bloated Burdened (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 20 February 2023 19:31 (two years ago)

I'm basically same as doglatin and Jordan, which puts us pretty high on percentage of lifetime spent on ilx, all over 50%. When I first started, it felt like I was the youngest one on here and every post I made was stupid. Now I'm somewhere in the middle agewise and stupid post-wise

Vinnie, Monday, 20 February 2023 23:23 (two years ago)

I remember those! I always felt like archy the cockroach when I used them.

Born in 1984. My brother told me about ilx early on so I read a few threads on topics I was interested in, but didn't join until 2019. Most of my early internet posting was on Television Without Pity, which had very strict rules about capitalizing, using full sentences, softening your language - lots of "I think" and "IMO" - and not posting about episodes you hadn't finished watching. So my internet voice was kind of formal and careful from the start.

I am too needy for ILX but too introverted for regular social media. The middle of the Venn diagram is "insecure" I guess?

I was always afraid to admit my age here because my music tastes make me seem gen X so therefore thought people might assume I was at least that old = more likely to take me seriously regarding: stuff. Not that this is an ILX thing but it certainly is an IRL thing that is until you reach the vague middle-age spectrum of adulthood. Anyway, '87.

same, well not that my brother told me about it but i was a fan of FT and Tanya Headon in particular at the time. But my numbers are the same.

Def one of the youngest people on here in mental age and maturity, and prob one of the least educated as a hs drop out. see myself as just dipping my toes in here, not too involved but the reality is i probably read and post more than some ppl who are entrenched.

given the recent census I'm interested to hear from ilx parents about introducing their children to this place, has this ever happened? surely it must be a possibility at least, wondering if I would when my daughter becomes a teenager

Florin Cuchares, Monday, 6 March 2023 03:42 (two years ago)

I've sent my daughter links to ilx threads that are especially related to her interests, year-end tv poll results or film threads usually, but if she's ever followed up by lurking or even posting here it would be news to me.

As a pure generalization I find that each new decade delivers a new set of young people who are even less interested in posting something they were required to type out than the young people who came of age in the previous decade. Sure, there are exceptions, but writing as a mode of internet exchange among the general populace grows more and more marginal as time passes.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 6 March 2023 04:06 (two years ago)

A teacher at my school is making his English class go on music messageboards and post about song lyrics for a project. I don't know if I'm relieved they haven't heard of ilx or sad they won't show up here in droves to get insulted by calstars.

Lily Dale, Monday, 6 March 2023 04:15 (two years ago)

My 17-year-old son is music obsessed but I can't imagine him being interested in a site like this. One issue is that threads here are mostly artist-centred, album-centred. I get the impression from my son's generation that the music they listen to is pretty much decoupled from artists/albums. They just like the sound or the song and they don't much care who did it or what album it's from, and are not necessarily tempted to seek out the rest of an artist's oeuvre just because they like one of their songs. There are songs that I've heard my son play multiple times in the car and I know it's a favourite but when I ask him who it is, he doesn't know and he has to look on his phone to check.

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 6 March 2023 04:46 (two years ago)

The 18 year old in my house is really into vinyl! He collects and listens to albums. All hope is not lost.

But the thought young people couldnt be arsed writing online because why waste time say lot word when few tiktok do trick right.

thinking about it, it's possible that channel is how i "got into music" in the first place. getting baited by silvagunner rip --> listening to more mashups on youtube --> finding neil cicierega's "Mouth" albums --> getting into Lemon Demon --> developing my own music taste from there. and i doubt i'm the only internet poisoned gen z nerd to take that path, or some version of it!

My 22 year old book club pals love the Libertines and the Manics, it's weird as hell (they do also have p good music taste in general but damn, they make me feel old).

emil.y, Monday, 17 July 2023 15:32 (two years ago)

I'm sure the kids are into all sorts of old music good and bad, but being into old school message boards would be imo the more surprising development

Yeah i mean one of my 22 year old students last year came to class wearing a Heatmiser shirt, and when I told them that I had seen Smith on his last tour and he’d done a version of Plainclothes Man, they were like, “Okay, yr older than I thought but also cooler” lol

tbh I have no idea how Ween got so weirdly popular even after they stopped releasing records. maybe it's something to do with Spongebob, I dunno. usually you can trace this sort of thing to the YouTube algorithm doing something weird or a certain meme getting really popular but I don't think either of those apply to Ween.

frogbs, Monday, 17 July 2023 16:55 (two years ago)

jam band crossover imo

Ah, I thought I made a comment on here but it seems like it didn't post...

Hello there 😳 Yeah, I found this through imago and Christine Indigo (it was mentioned on a Cardiacs discord server we were all in). Been backreading for a few months now, I like how this site has a casual tone but is still very open to more thoughtful posts/deeper analysis. It's also nice to find somewhere with active threads on folk music, there's not much discussion of that in my usual online haunts (Discord/RYM/Reddit occasionally). And I was born in 2001, so pretty comfortably gen Z, I think?

vexingvexillologist, Monday, 17 July 2023 21:26 (two years ago)

And I like Ween! But I wouldn't consider myself a superfan or anything. The Pod is probably my fave album of theirs?

vexingvexillologist, Monday, 17 July 2023 21:27 (two years ago)

i never understood why ILX wasn't a discord group. there is a lot of activity here and it lends itself to that medium. a subreddit pre-IPO discussions would've also been good?

Punster McPunisher, Monday, 17 July 2023 23:27 (two years ago)

hi vv, welcome!

z_tbd, Monday, 17 July 2023 23:47 (two years ago)

most of my exposure to ween is 'poopship destroyer' and 'zoloft'. i've never figured out poopship and i've never taken zoloft, but i do like the latter quite a bit

z_tbd, Monday, 17 July 2023 23:48 (two years ago)

It can't be repeated often enough that being a website that you could plausibly look at during work hours in your office job was/is an important part of ILX.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 17 July 2023 23:53 (two years ago)

^^ this is true. also a neat stylesheet would be one to make ilx look like a spreadsheet, for the same purposes

z_tbd, Monday, 17 July 2023 23:54 (two years ago)

do you mean people just don't want to use their phones to browse the site or download discord?

Punster McPunisher, Monday, 17 July 2023 23:59 (two years ago)

Yeah - I mean, there are other issues with Discord, but the big one is that (the last time I checked) it is very obviously not work.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 18 July 2023 00:09 (two years ago)

i love the design of ilx and hate the way reddit and discord look. it's a beautiful plain text message board
