2022's Oscar Nominees

The Fabelmans is my favorite movie in this lineup, but it sure feels like we're not going to get many more TÁRs in our moviegoing/Oscargoing lives.

Avatar's the only one I haven't watched.

xp I've been somewhat heartened that people care about Tar at all, and that there's been so much discussion about it. The tweets and memes that talk about the character like she's Gritty or something are annoying, but by and large I've been surprised by the number of people who get what it's doing and are able to hang with it.

Only saw four, Tár easily.

I've seen five and don't LOVE any of them, but Tár is the most interesting one so I voted for that. (Of the ones I haven't seen, I'm most interested in Fabelmans and Women Talking.)

loved women talking but i think a lot of its pleasures will be diminished when people are watching it on a streaming device; i was not annoyed at all with the color grading and was honestly kinda spellbound by it in the theater. the shot of the fists in the sky when they're learning to navigate by the stars... one of the more breathtaking images of the year imo

also loved the misé-en-scene of it, how it mostly took place in a single location but would occasionally suddenly and violently break out of it, as if the context for the conversation they were having were leaking through traumatic fissures in the film

It would've been Judith Ivey, not Claire Foy or Jessie Buckley, who would've been on my supporting actress ballot this year

I've *only* seen Women Talking (meh). Well, and 50 mins of Everything Everywhere... which was enough for me to know that it was Not For Me. Will see The Fabelmans and maybe Tar once they hit my streaming services.

If Hollywood ends up surviving the IP age, the Avatar and Top Gun BP noms will be regarded as Airport/Towering Inferno-grade howlers.

This Top Gun is better and funnier than Hollywood's Burning.

avatar 2 is basically an anti-fandom film. any attempt to dig into the lore or figure out the characters deeper than trope level makes the experience worse. it's a movie, not a "cinematic universe"

We just watched it for the first time at home and we both found it riveting. It's kind of a quiet masterclass in framing and filming what is in essence mostly just a long discussion in a barn, because never did I find it particularly claustrophobic. Emotionally maybe, but not visually. Of the movies nominated, I liked it better than (for sure) Banshees and Everything Everywhere and Top Gun, maybe a bit more than Fabelmans (which has a lot of built-in stuff working in its favor). Haven't seen Tar yet, but that's likely the only one left that I will ever see.

Steven Spielberg's direction was bad. It was sentimental. He was working something out, clearly. I don't know what it was. The story wasn't that interesting. Alright, you made movies? Who doesn't make movies when they're a kid? This particular slice you decided to show us wasn't that compelling.... it felt indulgent, and he couldn't be objective about it. I thought it was not well cast, people were just playing types. I thought Michelle Williams was trying to be "Jewish Mama." Paul Dano seemed really lost to me — I don't know if he was intimidated by Spielberg. I thought he was great in Batman, but to play a regular guy was painful.

My opinion (and worth considerably less than what you paid for it): I'm more interested in the prospect of half-assed EEAAO copycats than half-assed Tár copycats.

We watched Fabelmans today as an Oscars warm-up, liked it about as much as I expected from what I had gleaned of it — which is to say, pretty well but with reservations.

So of the 6 of the movies on this list I've seen, my preference would go something like:

Tar — Fabelmans — Banshees — EEAAO — Avatar — Top Gun

All of which exist on the B-C section of my personal bell curve. Really B+ to C+, didn't love or hate any of them.

this was a decent oscars ceremony. not too long, some interesting speeches. only one of the songs was actively bad.

It was by some considerable distance the worst film I saw nominated in any category

Yeah as soon as I saw it I knew it would win and I also knew _My Year of Dicks_ was being robbed as a result.

Most of the wins last night wouldn't have been my choice -- I think the only ones I was actively rooting for were "Naatu Naatu" and Sarah Polley. EEAAO didn't connect with me and I can't help but be a little disappointed that Cate Blanchett lost for such a tour-de-force performance. That said, it's hard to begrudge at
its success, and I get why voters felt that Yeoh deserved it more. Maybe I just wish that a couple of its seven wins (and All Quiet's four wins, for that matter) went elsewhere? (Tar, The Fabelmans, and Banshees of Inisherin, all of which I liked to varying degrees, collectively got 22 nominations and zero wins.)

The ceremony itself was fine if a little unexciting. I still wish the Oscars didn't feel like they had to constantly apologize for the show’s length (the Super Bowl announcers don't). But it was nice to see the return of the traditional setup of a single host on an auditorium stage, and there wasn't too much dumb filler.

Even with its stylized dullness, last night's ceremony was the best-paced in at least two decades.

This wasn’t even Blanchett’s best losing performance and I am filing away JLC along with Judi Dench in 1998 ito “What the fuck were they thinking”? Personally extremely happy that Oscars have been shifting away from just acknowledging worthy studio dramas for a while now.

ceremony was fine, Kimmel exactly the kind of mildly funny, dull host it requires; no big experimental set pieces and therefore no risk of cringe. very little surprises IMO, I got about half my picks on my ballot correct even though I wanted Tar and Banshees to win some stuff, I had a feeling this was going to be a blow out.

She's the daughter of Hollywood royalty, the closest thing to an industry vet in the four categories, etc.

A Facebook friend just posted "I want to be friends with the entire cast and crew of EEAAO," which is otm. It felt like somebody's hipster-nerd brunch group made a movie and brought all their friends with them.

i'll say that the EEAAO director's speech that culminated with "thanks for unlocking my genius" didn't go over very well with anyone I watched with (but people were talking a lot and we missed some of what he said prior to that)

also, they did a pretty good job of not playing anyone off on stage EXCEPT for the Indian filmmakers who did the Elephant film. Lame! They let that old dude who looked like Art Garfunkel ramble on forever after that.

Ke Huy Quan has been out of the picture for a while, but it kind of boggles the mind that Michelle Yeoh has only been hovering on the periphery of Hollywood for so long. Like, she should have gotten an Oscar for the motorcycle stunt in "Police Story 3."

I've never heard of "The Boy, The Mole," etc., what's objectionable about it? That tweet makes it sound lame, but it's a children's movie?

It's all very well meaning and indeed based on a children's book, and the animation's quite nice. It's essentially a 'we choose our own families' story, an important enough message as ever. But much like "An Irish Goodbye" its sentiment is pretty sugary and 'well of course this was going to win' in feel, in combination with the BBC/Bad Robot/Apple/name actors factor. "My Year of Dicks" was easily, totally better all around.

I quite liked Black Swan but aside from that I have derived no positive feelings from any Aronofsky films, I genuinely regret putting myself through Requiem For A Dream and mother! and suspect that Pi was only of interest because it looked like a Shinya Tsukamoto film and I imagined there was something I wasn't getting.

the dedication to the fake rough-lines-left in style meant that the scene where a character gets caught in a wire was visually incomprehensible because the "loose" swirly lines remained after he was ostensibly freed from the "wire" swirly lines. as ill-thought, insultingly tokenistic and dullardly as the script.

As much as I can not countenance a Marvel movie winning anything, much less an acting award, seeing Angela Bassett taking that loss seemingly pretty hard wasn't a highlight of the night

I can't really comment because I haven't seen the movie, but I have seen other Marvel movies, so am I right in guessing that her nomination was based on like, one big somber, melodramatic monologue?

having worked covering the video game industry i'm friends w/a not insignificant number of younger gen x/older millennial asian men on FB and IG who identified as somewhat nerdy in school and their extreme joy at Ke Huy Quan's win has been extremely touching.

Yeah, it seems to be an incredibly millennial film to me.

I can't see myself ever watching The Whale but this comment on Fraser from Alfred's liveblog last night is spot on: "I like him. He had it in him to be the Joel McCrea of his generation, a solid actor doomed to being perpetually overlooked."

We tuned into the last hour of the show last night and my husband, who doesn't follow current cinema at all, was pleased that "two people (he) loved in the 90s" won the top acting awards.

Weird how it’s Angela Bassett who’s considered undeserving. The screentime of the cast, A24 shouldn’t have submitted JLC for consideration! It was a strong category and hers must have been the weakest role nominated. Yeah I know how the Oscars work, I’m also saying it remains shit.

when you break down the times like that tbh it's curtis and hong who seem like supporting and everyone else who seems like a lead (hsu in a grey area but she certainly seems like a lead when you watch it).

I think a problem - and again, not remotely claiming this is a new or unknown thing - with the “ok you’ve been solid here’s an Oscar for your role in this good film” thing is that you can see how the Academy’s tastes have shifted a bit and a lot of the stuff that they previously overlooked in the past may have been nominated this year. Not quite so much of a shift - I mean, Nope was my film of the year & it was nowhere, but a film like EEAAO winning makes me wonder if the 2023 Academy would have recognised The Matrix or Blade Runner in non-technical categories?

The acting categories ended up exactly the same as the Screen Actors Guild awards, but Angela Bassett did win a Golden Globe, iirc the first for a Marvel role, and has been nominated for, what, two Oscars in her whole almost forty years of work? Similarly, Tracer Hand made an excellent point upthread (or maybe in the EEAAO thread?) re Stephanie Hsu & her likelihood of winning in the future. What was that statistic? Second time in 95 years for a lead role? I’d be annoyed too, and perhaps worth thinking of the relative rarity of these prestige roles for Black and Asian actors. It would be nice if we could just enjoy Yeoh winning for a stellar performance in a deeply weird performance as just that, instead of her having to be the first.

Hsu was the best young woman I've seen in a film since Lady Bird and I wish retroactively that she'd have been in it.

JLC is cool, i don't have a problem w/her winning. she's been great in a lot of roles over the years, and probably should give an honorary mention to True Lies, which is a problematic flick and her role doesn't deviate from that and is a bit unbelievable, but she commits to it fully and you forget how ridiculous the character is in a lot of ways. i bet this was a close vote though, i kinda thought kerry condon might sneak thru but it was probably tough to get past two icons.

She was the second best supporting actress in her own film but sure.

There appear to be three categories for acting wins - 1) an astonishing performance, 2) being entirely of the moment, or 3) having a legacy or being overdue - as well as sometimes a combination of the three.

Stephanie Hsu is fantastic in EEAAO, but Curtis winning seems fine to me. She's memorable as always and it is a legacy award. I would have liked to see Farrell win best actor, not just as a legacy but for his performance, but am happy that Brendan Fraser won and not Austin Butler for yet another mimicry of a music star in a dumb biopic

In the International Film category I still haven't seen Close, which is a film about a mama's boy that I've been looking forward to for months, starring Eden Dembrine and Émilie Dequenne (best actress winner in the Palme D'Or-winning film from 1999, Rosetta).

All Quiet was the inevitable winner though

Close earned several queasy reviews from writers I respect. Their consistency impressed me: a strong first half, a calamitous second half.

I'm going to rent it this week.

Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton will receive honorary Oscars at this year’s Governors Awards, announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In addition, the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards. The four statuettes will be presented at the 14th annual ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023, in Los Angeles.
