i missed all the rugby...maybe i'll watch some reruns.
I freely admit to gearing up for two weeks of madness in the best way. (And as I said elsewhere, the events of the week since Sunday means I am no longer treating it as a simple escape from reality.)

Always like swimming, athletics and cycling but I don't know if I am going to care. What I want to see is stuff they won't be showing because Britishers aren't good at it: handball, other racquet sports like badminton, table tennis...
― xyzzzz__, Thursday, 25 July 2024 11:34 (one year ago)
i just watch randomly. the handball...doesn't excite me much. its cool. and when teams are good at it it can get pretty insane. i forget it exists as a sport until the olympics.
can't believe breakdancing is happening. looking forward to that.
― scott seward, Thursday, 25 July 2024 11:38 (one year ago)
All my mid-level managers somehow have tickets and are spending on accommodation in Paris, clearly it's an exercise in futility to be seen there and report about the random event that you were allocated by the lottery. I just heard some comment about how green those games are and I had to roll my eyes.
― Nabozo, Thursday, 25 July 2024 11:57 (one year ago)
"i forget it exists as a sport until the olympics."
Olympics is the time to be enthusiastic about random things. I like Water Polo and volleyball too! The former is so aggressive, and there is no way to watch it at any other time.

Brazilian goalkeeper totally smashed it vs Spain in the women's handball, capping the performance with a one-handed holding save seconds before the final whistle, a move that pretty much doesn't happen in this sport.

I was watching some of the US trials yesterday. Does anyone else find it weird how all US athletes seem to feel that if they do not win gold, then they have utterly failed and the whole thing was pointless?
― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 25 July 2024 15:17 (one year ago)
it has always been presented as *THE GOAL* here. i always thought that just getting in the Olympics was massive for an athlete! i mean, how exciting is that for someone? but, yeah, the commentators, the cereal boxes, the whole "agony of defeat" thing here. its a bummer.

Spain-Japan soccer match. 1-1! Japan is doing well
― Punster McPunisher, Thursday, 25 July 2024 15:40 (one year ago)
I remember my dad mentioning once (coached track for years, has attended the national championships/Olympic trials as often as he can) that people think that not getting gold is a crushing blow but the ones who are really most disappointed are fourth-place finishers. And that makes sense!

Couldn’t find a classical 2024 thread but the breakdancing countertenor —unidentified by NBC—was Jakub Orlinski and I think the pianist getting rained on playing Ravel was Alexandre Kanterow.
― Bad Bairns (Boring, Maryland), Saturday, 27 July 2024 03:42 (one year ago)
The weather, I think, curtailed some of the spectacle. There clearly was meant to be a lot more fun with the BMX riders, and I notice several people dancing in boats who didn’t want to be remembered as that one person who slipped and fell in the Seine.
I don’t think they redid the shooting script for the rain either. There was one moment where the camera panned skyward for what was clearly the time for La Patrouille Acrobatique to come through with a big tricolour, and all there was was a shot of thick grey clouds.
I appreciated the vision and taking outside the stadium to more people. Can account for the weather.
(Brisbane 2032 should do the boats thing because then we can have the first Olympian to be eat by a crocodile on live tv)

I couldn't understand a word Gaga said.Loved the boats. Very cool to see Nicky Doll and friends, I'm sure a lot of countries had to blur that. And Philippe Katherine haha. Juliette Armanet, who I love, singing "Imagine" was so cliché. I don't understand what the 90's eurodance medley has to do with France or the Olympics. The horse was super cool, but went on forever. Céline totally killed it.

It's sometimes called Team Handball for that reason, and it's huge all over the world, from Norway to France... France are reigning Olympic and European champs, in both cases beating Denmark in the final, who instead have won the last three World Cups. For some reason they met in the very first group match yesterday, and it was masterful. Denmark down by five in the first half, winning by eight in the end! It's last chance for legend Mikkel Hansen (who played in Paris most of his career) to win Olympic Gold, so it's all very emotional for everyone.

The women's slalom canoeing final was tense - not a phrase I thought I'd ever say, by the way. Jess Fox went first with her gold medal winning time, and then had to wait for everyone else to do their run, with the one person likely to beat her - Ricarda Funk - going last and then getting 53 seconds in penalities.

watching the women's street skating today and almost all the skaters were, like, 12! there might have been a few actual adults. why are they so young? where are the wily veterans? do they all retire at 16? in men's skating there are some kids but i'm sure most of the street skaters will be in their 20s and 30s. i feel like the men start peaking in their 20s and beyond. no offense to the women. they are awesome! but you don't quite get that Olympic quality of skating from kids. though the gold medal winner is 14 and she is gnarly.

water polo is so vicious
how does any match not end with at least one murder
― mookieproof, Monday, 29 July 2024 15:06 (one year ago)
I am amused/unsurprised at the contrast between the women's skateboarders as being a bunch of generally quiet friendly assassins and the men's crew being introduced all "YAAAAARGH BRO."
Flashback moment but in 1992 when NBC first did the 'we can do more, can't we' approach and did the triple cast, as my dad wanted to catch all the track and field, word got out through my sis to her high school classmates -- they'd all just graduated but were hanging out over summer as per usual -- and all the water polo guys were like "CAN WE WATCH THE WATER POLO?" (Keep in mind football was absolutely secondary at my high school -- water polo was the sport.) So I heard stories about all the water polo team all crowded into the den watching every match they could and generally agreeing that the teams were essentially committing unarmed assault beneath the waterline.

Caught the final archery competitions and shit, South Korea had my jaw dropping. The gold-medal winners (and apparently #1 ranked team going in), it was like Robin Hood shit going on with multiple bull's eye shots. (Not sure if this would happen with these arrows, but it looked like a fraction of a centimeter is all it would've took to split a previous bull's eye.) Going by the stats, France really upped their game, possibly feeding off their hometown crowd, but they were still edged out.
― birdistheword, Tuesday, 30 July 2024 04:05 (one year ago)
Yeah the women’s team match yesterday was nervy and down to the wire, while the men’s was more commanding, but in both cases Korea did the business. Will also add for today’s surfing that the sixth heat is a battle royale out of the gate. (Still have nine minutes to go on my replay watch of it.)
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 July 2024 04:34 (one year ago)
just gonna drop this opinion here for whatever reason, and I’m sure it’s not original: the fact that there’s different events for each swimming stroke, and each distance, is stupid. decide what the “olympic” stroke and distance are and have one race
― brony james (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 30 July 2024 05:19 (one year ago)
not that I would expect many people itt to be aware of this but last week ESPN had a countdown of the best athletes of the past 25 years and phelps was #1, mostly because has the most gold medals ever by swimming different ways different distances and beating the same guys in every race
― brony james (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 30 July 2024 06:16 (one year ago)
Watched a bit of it for the first time yesterday and I love the contrast in levels of professionalism in different sports. With boxing I think its only have amateurs in it. Struck me how shattered they looked after three rounds whereas there was not a hint of stress in the breath of O'Callaghan as she came out of the pool after breaking a record.
Obv its a ridiculous comparison but I couldn't shift it.

counterpoint: give basketball teams multiple medals for scoring the most points in different ways, france could finally get gold for screen assists
― big baby billy bass (m bison), Tuesday, 30 July 2024 14:54 (one year ago)
I have no problems with different styles or distances in swimming cause each one uses a different skillset (athletes like Phelps and Marchand who enter multiple events are outliers rather than the norm, so no they were not always going up against the same guys every time). but I do find the longer distance races kinda boring. Like anything after 400m is just zzz
I’m always rooting against Americans in any Olympics (sorry, not really) and I have no love for Phelps but he really was an incredible athlete. Remember that every swim event has heats, semis and finals… the fact that he could not just compete in but dominate as many events as he did without tiring himself out is unreal.

Couple of Olympic stories in Popbitch today:
Italy have been moaning all over the media that they lost the fencing gold medal unfairly to Hong Kong. This slight is not something that Hong Kongers were prepared to take lying down.So first up, Pizza Hut Hong Kong started offering free pineapple on all their pizzas this week to infuriate the Italians back. Then fencing fans began posting pictures of themselves eating pasta with soy sauce.Poor Roberto Linguanotto, who died this week, must already be turning in his grave in trepidation as to how his legacy is bound to be trashed. Roberto was better known as the "Father of tiramisu".
Let it not be said that the Daily Mail doesn’t attack without fear or favour. This week the sports desk turned over a member of Team GB women’s rugby team as an alleged racist. But only after the presses were rolling did anyone realise that she was no ordinary alleged racist. She's the daughter of a Daily Mail feature writer.

the trans panic around the boxers is seriously infuriating. people who know nothing about chromosomal genetics, sex determination, or boxing, or sports regulation all chiming in with the worst takes
Not to mention that neither boxer are trans! They’re women, who were born as women, who have always competed as women. it’s so tiring

"(Biles does appear to be better but how do you differentiate 0.1 points between some of the other athletes?)"
obviously gymnastics over the years has had its share of behavior that would have made the most wizened of wise guys blush while in the act of fixing a harness race at the belmont racetrack in south ozone park, queens, ny, but whatsherface who does the broadcasting here was explaining yesterday about the "ghost scores" in gymnastics which are all the deductions for things that you can't actually see during a routine (because crazy fast) that are all very specific score-wise. and why someone can lose by such a small margin for the teeniest of tiny mistakes.

also love that the Algerian gymnast is actually French but switched teams because they didn’t want her to compete due to injury, and now she’s a gold medalist! thats some good revenge

so glad i skipped the tennis for gymnastics, very happy to see Carlos Yulo pick up his second gold for the Philippines
― Roz, Sunday, 4 August 2024 15:29 (one year ago)
golf was fantastic today. scheffler last round 9 birdie 62 to take gold despite putting like crap for the first 3 rounds. rahm 4 shot lead with 8 to play then bogey, bogey, par, double bogey choke. mcilroy 5 birdies in a row to get into medal position then dunking it in the water on 15. fleetwood took silver, matsuyama bronze.
looking frwd to the high jump later. love the swimming with the exception of the 1500m which bores the crap out of me in a way long distance track somehow doesn't.

lot of cycling is just ability to produce power, not too unusual to find people who have been converted from other sports, also people who have been converted from the online racing where you have a power meter on yr bike in yr living room and compete against other people in their living rooms, the converts tend not to be as good at maneuvering the bicycle tho

primoz roglic the most famous example converted from ski jumping which you dont need to produce a lot of power for kind weird to become one of the best cyclist of his generation, his achilles heel tho he crashes a lot which goes back to that not maneuvering the bicycle as good thing

btw, table tennis gold medalist fan zhendong got himself into a little controversy for being a swiftie earlier this year
The 27-year-old, who was once ranked number 1 the world, lost to his compatriot Lin Shidong, 18, at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Grand Smash earlier this month. The competition took place here, at the Singapore Sports Hub.He was unable to proceed to the top 16 of the competition, and saw his position taken over by a fellow Chinese player, Wang Chuqin. Not long after his defeat, a clip of Zhendong enjoying himself at Taylor Swift’s Singapore gig went viral on Chinese social media. He was seen wearing colourful friendship bracelets, carrying Taylor Swift merch, and singing excitedly to her songs at the concert — just like any other Swiftie. Unfortunately, Zhendong’s behaviour landed on the wrong side of the internet, seizing the attention of an angry hoard of netizens. He was harshly criticised, with many saying he should have focused on training and not have taken time off to have fun.Zhendong has since taken to Weibo to reflect on his loss, and defend himself against the naysayers. “I bought a ticket from a reseller, and took three hours off my busy schedule two days before the competition to attend the event that all Swifties dreamt of going for. Music has no boundaries, and outstanding musicians such as Taylor Swift can bring others a sense of healing and confidence. I hope that more people can open their hearts to this feeling,” he wrote. Zhendong continued: “In games, I am an athlete who has been nurtured by my country, and I’ve never slacked off in the 10 plus years when it comes to fighting for my country’s glory. In the limited personal time I have, I am but a normal young adult, with my own hobbies and relationships, and I will remain disciplined while staying true to myself."

Philippines winning their second-ever (and third-ever) gold medal is a huge thing. The first was for weightlifting. My ex is with his family this weekend, and he told me that the entire room spontaneously rose and sang the anthem and his dad started crying when Yulo won. He told me that the government has pledged a free house to any medal winner. It's a big deal!

the fully overhead shot of the 100m that they showed on BBC is the best video i’ve seen, lyles actually overtakes thompson with like 10m to go and is able to hold him off. you can see his head cross first pretty clearly. insane how slow lyles is out of the blocks, he was clearly in last after the first 10m. i guess you can see why he’s really a 200m runner

if anyone hasnt seen it yet go watch the gold medal match in mens archery, i wont spoil it but it was honestly one of the greatest sports matches ive ever seen.
noah lyles has so much weird guy energy i kinda just have to stan a little. probably would be the most annoying person you could ever be around but i appreciate him being a totally different type of world classs athlete.
i watched the finals of the mens and womens skeet shooting. vince won his 4th gold medal in a row which is insane, and no one cares or knows who he is. dont even think they mentioned it on prime time? silver medalist was also a young american who outclassed him until the final 4 shots.
golf final nine was incredible.
womens road race, when our girl hit the afterburners that was the good stuff baby. pretty wild to watch the next 3 just dink around until like the last 50 feet.
excited for monday:– mens indoor vball usa vs brazil– womens water polo usa vs croatia– pole vualt final - can anyone even come close to duplantis? will he break his own world record? How is he so much better than everyone else. – track races obv - 800 should be good– balance beam – mens high bar which is the only mens gymnastics thing i really love to watch– wrestling, i try to watch a lot of freestyle, hoping helen margoulis can medal again but there's plenty of others to cheer for– mixed team skeet shooting? i guess im a fan now– cycling track events are always fun – ill check out the bouldering but more interested in the speed climbing– might check some badminton but dont think it translates well for tv viewing, the pickleball problem, if you will

the uk, and i guess france, has a big problem with sewage getting into rivers because of dodgy water companies. apparently it's a bigger problem when it rains a lot, which it has been in france as you've probably seen.
fun fact: the lead campaigner against said sewage problem in the uk is the ex lead singer on the undertones: https://x.com/Feargal_Sharkey
― koogs, Monday, 5 August 2024 15:33 (one year ago)
I imagine it's Paris that has the problem whereas it's pretty much everywhere in England.
― Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Monday, 5 August 2024 15:36 (one year ago)
swimming in a river in the middle of a big city just seems like a bad idea generally even if theres no poor sewage practices theres so much nasty stuff around yeah it rains things wash in there
― lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 15:37 (one year ago)
... and I think, in this case, it is England rather than the UK?

I think the Seine gets a bad rap - these swimming events wouldn't be happening in the Thames at all. The swimming sections for the triathlon events in 2012 had to be held in The Serpentine in Hyde Park.

― xyzzzz__, Monday, 5 August 2024 17:10 (one year ago)
Swimming in the Seine immediately struck me as a bad idea. In their defense, if I had to jump into an urban river (like to escape a boat that was about to explode), I guess I'd rather it be the Seine's waters than anywhere else. Remember when Chicago was trying to get an Olympics? Imagine the reaction if they said they were holding those events in the Chicago River.
Anyway, the comments in that reddit thread about the pole vaulting penis are a riot.

"these triathletes should be micro dosing by not washing their hands for months before the race."
Rider said before the triathlon that to build immunity against E. coli, he was intentionally exposing himself to the bacteria before the race. “It's actually backed by science,” he said. “Proven methods. Just little things throughout your day, like not washing your hands after you go to the bathroom."

Maybe a stupid question but for the pole vault, can the poles get longer? Or will the record breaking eventually top out with how far you can go on the size of the pole?
― a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 19:05 (one year ago)
The poles are always the poles; the height bar is what is adjusted. If you succeed you keep going; if you're the last one left you go as far as you want to until you fail at your chances or just decide you're done. Once Duplantis had locked up the gold he could have done anything; he called for a height to break the world record because he could (he could have gone lower, or higher, or just stopped). His obvious plan was to break the record -- his own -- and did.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 19:16 (one year ago)
(It does make the pole vault an interesting open-ended event in that way -- unless I'm completely wrong, it's the only field event where it's not a question of best-of-however-many-rounds, but literally ends only whenever it does.)

I keep missing the climbing, will need to catch up
glad they've split speed climbing from the other disciplines, makes for a much more varied group of competitors
― Roz, Thursday, 8 August 2024 00:35 (one year ago)
It's funny, as a climber who regularly watches climbing comps, the first hour of the men's boulder semifinals were deeply boring because there were no tops— it was only when the more top-seeded climbers came out that things started getting interesting. Sorato Anraku is fucking awesome, and it was also cool to see Toby Roberts do well. One of the kids from the gyms where I work came in 17th (Jesse Grupper).
Agreed with Roz about the speed climbing, but mostly because speed climbing is (imho rightfully) ghettoized within the climbing world as "not legit." Tons of great speed climbers have never touched a rock out of doors— it is, in many ways, the newest and most impure form of the sport. Training on plastic, wood, and concrete materials indoors has allowed athletes to become better climbers out-of-doors, of course, but none of the people who hold speed records on outdoor routes "practice" speed-climbing qua sport. Just my two cents.
Can't say much about anything else because I only really have time and attention for climbing and some gymnastics events.

sport climbing really gives you everything - from the near unbreakable dominance of Janja Garnbret in the women's competition to the completely unpredictable drama on the men's side.

U.S. officials face accusations they improperly allowed American athletes to compete in "elite level" events after tests showed they used performance-enhancing drugs. Deals were struck with at least three athletes if they agreed to serve as informants and cooperate in on-going doping investigations. Reuters first reported the practice.

This salvo from international anti-doping officials based in Montreal, Canada, comes after WADA itself faced growing criticism for its handling of positive drug tests involving 23 Chinese swimmers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whUx-5mbLl0saw this and the preceding battle last night after not being aware that it was an Olympic sport. So missed the previous battles building up to this if they were shown. Great feats of skill, particularly since they are heavily improvised at least in terms of what flows into what.Apparently the dancers only find out what the music is as it starts. So not sure if they have some idea of what it's likely to be and routines penciled in or the extent to which they are reacting to music in the moment. Anyway flowing an acrobatic move into an otherwise non connected acrobatic move in time to the beat is great viewing.

Janja Garnbret, what a beast. She looked a bit vulnerable today, injured a finger during the bouldering and seemed a bit rushed during her climbs, but it still didn’t stop her from the gold
Very impressed also by Japanese climber Mori Ai, so small but so strong. Felt like the boulder routesetters favoured tall climbers, at one point she was having to swing like more than double her height just to get to the next hold

"Medal count: If you are obsessed with the medal count, this is a very important game for the USA – at least, if you’re one of those people who would rather reward China for being unbeatable in two sports (diving, table tennis) that award 13 gold medals rather than being good across the board in a multitude of sports."
Complete bollocks from The Guardian.
The Chinese are good in multiple sports and Americans are pretty dominant in Basketball, for example. Their dominance in diving and table tennis hasn't stopped the US from being top in golds in almost every Olympics since the Soviet Union fell (bar Beijing)

Glad that Brooke Raboutou got the silver.
One of the things that is great about the podium winners in sport climbing is that a majority also have an outdoor practice— really, they are related but different sports, and crushing on plastic is impressive but not as impressive as a good multi-pitch outdoor sport climb. Toby Roberts does a fair amount of outdoor climbing, and Brooke is an absolute beast outdoors, along with her brother, who is certainly one of the best boulderers in the world but whose practice is focused on hard boulders outside

Apart from Khelif here is a report on the other woman (Lin Yu-ting) caught in this appalling row.
Bet few in their opinion pages will not make any connections.
"The runner-up was, though, questioned later about the political party she is aligned with. Szeremeta was a candidate for the extreme right party Konfederacja in elections earlier this year, unsuccessfully contesting a local election in Lublin. Konfederacja’s social media activity, largely through reposts on X, has cast doubt over Lin’s eligibility to compete and on Saturday night its feed contained a number of apparent insults towards the winner. Asked whether she would endorse these views, Szeremeta declined to offer a comment."

Yeah that was great to see, and I have to thank tabes for tipping me off to pay closer attention to this sport here. Realizing the more I watched how much of it is a combination of having to combine evident practiced skill in general with near on-the-fly calculations of geometry and physics, underscored by how they only have a few minutes to look at each setup and try and determine what the general approach should be, it's a hell of a thing!

There are a couple of news articles about it out there (UK at least). Never known it to be anywhere near as bad at previous Olympics and similarly ambitious events, including the frequent in-stadium announcers echoing.

All I can say is that Facebook's memory function reminded me that the London 2012 closing ceremony was exactly twelve years ago today and while Paris's just got kinda lost once the LA bit kicked in (liked the blowing out of the final flame though), I was full of comical-but-accurate rage at how London's played out, probably because the opening ceremony was so much better in comparison.

Also, there is a bit of a groundswell for cricket in Texas thanks to a growing South Asian community there, and the US team beat Pakistan in the recent World Cup held in the US and the Caribbean. So weirdly, cricket could actually meet the moment a bit!

Could always bring back the arts competitionshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_competitions_at_the_Summer_OlympicsI want to know what happened at the 1928 games where the silver medal in dramatic literature was awarded to Lauro De Bosis of Italy, but why was there gold or bronze awarded? Controversy and scandal

(xp) Looking at past squash world champions I'm wondering if it has to do with the relative clout of the nations that are best at it, Egypt and Pakistan seem to have dominated for the men's game for decades, with occasional wins for the UK, France and Australia. But for solitary wins for the UK and Australia, Malaysia and Egypt have won the women's championship every year for 19 years. Don't they play squash in the US?

This piece is tongue in cheek but the Olympics reminds me how there is so much awesome sport that is never given the time of day by UK TV.
I wonder if, even with a restrained BBC budget they could broadcast more badminton, squash, table tennis, handball, water polo etc. Surely far cheaper to buy rights than the things they have been priced out of.
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 14 August 2024 08:51 (one year ago)
They used to show squash occasionally, that's how I knew Pakistan were good at it.
― Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 14 August 2024 08:54 (one year ago)
Tom D, squash in the US is considered a fancy sport for fancy people. Public tennis courts abound, but there are no public squash courts that I have ever heard of. It’s country club stuff.

paddle tennis, padel, and platform tennis (which is what hunt3r is referring to) are all different things, and none need to be an olympic sport because they’re so niche. pickeball will probably be an olympic sport in the next couple cycles tho

We were forced to learn pickleball in my mandatory high school gym class. We also had a gymnastics unit with every event + track and field with actual javelins + archery iirc??? So I can't complain. Our gym teacher was just determined not to teach any sports that were played by school teams, which I appreciate.

the opening parade tour has vastly different sizes of teams represented. Does that reflect who's taking part or who has arrived at that point. Some teams with a handful of members like.I was wondering if all countries took part in all sports during the non-para events and just got eliminated from earlier heats. Seemed to be a lot of sports with no black faces.

Stoker
been catching bits of this between other programmes.
did wonder how the one-armed one-legged woman would do anything other than swim in circles. 2 minutes later she had a gold medal in a world record time...
> Is that the blind guy?
did you think they'd have 'the blind guy' steering?
quadraplegic boccia was interesting - set up a launch ramp, poke the ball down it with a stick attached to your head. if you can move something even an inch you can play.
― koogs, Friday, 30 August 2024 08:10 (one year ago)
Is UK stoker partially sighted? Looked like he was making spacial gestures to the audience. I've been watching visuals with sound running from non-connected podcasts etc. but pretty interesting stuff so far.
Did wonder how all leg vs all arms swimming would compete. Would have expected legs to be more powerful but think that all arms have won more frequently. Just seeing swimmers who seem to have no kick competing and doing pretty well. Not sure if I've really watched before. Also not sure what coverage there is of this stuff outside of Olympics, presumably are several competitions televised in the 4 year interim.
― Stevo, Friday, 30 August 2024 10:09 (one year ago)
the invictus stuff (wounded soldiers) gets some coverage but i think that's probably it. maybe ch4 shows the big european meeting.
para and ex-para athletes increasingly common on things like strictly, game shows across ch4 and bbc these days too - kadeena was in dictionary corner last week for instance. it's going to be hard to avoid rosie jones on uk tv in the next couple of months... (new taskmaster, and i think two other shows)
― koogs, Friday, 30 August 2024 10:45 (one year ago)
one-legged cycling. i wonder if there's an advantage to have inner leg missing (better clearance on corners) or the outer leg missing (avoiding the cog and chain).
the below leg amputees have a standardish pedal clip on the ends on their prosthetics and screw themselves onto the bike.
the times are interesting as well, some of the clocks tick at different rates to compensate in mized category races.

A lot of you probably already know, but get in on wheelchair basketball. I've been watching it since 2012 and it fucking rules. Last night's game between Australia and the Netherlands was awesome, two teams with very different tactics, the whole thing too close to call until the last few minutes of the fourth quarter.

English cyclists very good when they can stay up.
(curious as to what i would do if i was getting solidly beaten by somebody who then feel over. would i feel good about winning in that situation?)
also like the way the one team just has "NPA" on their kit and on their flag, not even any colour, just black and white.

Atkinson tried a risky move in attempting to win the race early by catching up to Metelka, but Metelka was able to reduce Atkinson's lead. If Atkinson hadn't then overcooked it he would have won gold I think.

lol at the 11 and 13 metre lines on the shot putt when the winner was throwing 15+. you had one job...
wheelchair rugby seems like they are taking it in turns to score and the winner is the one who stops about 2 of those attempts. (lol, presenter has just said as much in GBR v AUS)
cockcroft won by 10m in a 100m race.

Is there a goalie in wheelchair rugby. Is that the standard game or are there 5aside and 11s.
― Stevo, Monday, 2 September 2024 13:54 (one year ago)
it's not a lot like rugby other than in a 'stop the person with the ball getting into the area' way
a max of 3 defending chairs in the 'penalty area' at any time (which isn't enough to block the entire thing) so no goalie as such (in fact there's no goalie in normal rugby for similar reasons - it's pointless)
it's 4 or 5 a side, iirc. and each player gets assigned points according to ability and there's a limit to the total on the field at any time. mixed gender teams, interestingly.

The 2 blind ballgames I saw yesterday were a surprise. I think I had channel hopped past the one with the 3 people lying in front of the goal and one person spinning then hurling the ball in the direction of the goal without taking in what was involved in the game before.Sat and watched it while listening to a podcast yesterday. Saw most balls being stopped by the goalies. Then Japan getting one in.Oh yeah one thing, the referee continually checking they hadn't regained sight between bouts of having the ball hurled at them. Healing properties of being a bowling pin or something?Momentary advantage of being able to see out of corner of a partially sighted eye that strong.
Also blind football.Hadn't known that existed until I caught a few minutes of it yesterday.

some pole vaulter guy just beat a 400m world record holder in a 100m, for yet another reason why there are too many events

> past the one with the 3 people lying in front of the goal
goalball. i've yet to see anyone score in goalball. them throwing it into the floor looked suboptimal becuase it took all the force out of it but i guess it's either in the rules or to add some kind of bounce to get it over the goal keepers (who are invariably lying down)
the blind football semi went to penalties. which feels like more of a crapshoot than even normal penalties.
