In terms of units, roughly.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

0-1 probably.

How much is a unit?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Not enough. At the moment, roughly 0. When I have fat stacks in the bank account and I'm back home, maybe 12.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

1 unit = 1 shot or one glass of wine or half a pint, more or less.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

How to answer?? Somewhere between Jel and Dom but on a semi-weekly basis.

brg30 (brg30), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey... thinking about this - I'm already on at least 35, and that's without allowing for going out. And this is only because there's always alcohol at home and usually have two glasses of wine with dinner and usually a couple of bottles of beer as well, usually because I like the taste of both drinks and like having a drink after work. Now I realise I can only count about seven or eight days in the last couple of years when I haven't had at least one drink. I rarely get drunk on workdays and I very rarely drink spirits even if there's no other alcohol around, but when I look at 35+ units a week this suddenly seems like a lot. Is this wrong?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Grrr... three 'usuallys' in one sentance of that last post. It should be worth pointing out that I am drunk while writing this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

s trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

in boston, maybe 8?

in london, 50+. i'm really not sure, but i reckon i have at least the equivalent of a couple of pints every evening, and 6+ on a sat/sun. i should probably keep a diary of it sometime...

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

A couple of months ago, I probably averaged about 2 units a week. Now I'm going out with a woman who likes wine with meals, and at other times, so I'm drinking a bit more, say half a dozen units a week.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

.5 beers

Mike Hanle y (mike), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm looking like a heavy drinker right now! i guess the london lot will be up in a few hours, though, and they'll make me look more normal.

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Somewhere between 4-8 drinks... it takes remarkably little to get me drunk, so that keeps the number down.

lyra (lyra), Monday, 25 November 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Usually zero units. Occasionally about ten units.

David (David), Monday, 25 November 2002 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I bet I drink more than anyone here. Between 80 and 120 units a week.

How much is a unit?

A unit is a small drink. A stingy measure of wine or spirits. A half pint of beer.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

somewhere between 2 and 8 a week.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:18 (twenty-three years ago)

anywhere between 4 and 40 standard drinks, depending on the week.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

earlier this year I used to drink about thirty or fourty or fifty units per week but now I only drink about ten or twenty.

rainy (rainy), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:21 (twenty-three years ago)

actually my boston intake is nearer 30. oops.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

man, i feel so sub-average. any of you NYCers want to go to a bar with me and help catch up?

geeta (geeta), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes Geeta of course. Name the day!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Total lifetime consumption is something like 4 or 5 normal-person-sized "drinks."

I started late.

Douglas, Monday, 25 November 2002 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha, should I even ANSWER this question? I don't drink as much as everyone thinks you know. And I'll definitely come help anyone catch up, I'm great for that.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

im little.
5-15 per week.

more on uni break.

***1979*** (***1979***), Monday, 25 November 2002 07:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Last seven days
Monday: 0
Tuesday: 10 (4 or 5 pints of Youngs Ordinary)
Wednesday: 4.5 (half bottle of wine)
Thursday: 4.5 (half bottle of wine)
Friday: 9 (half bottle of wine)
Saturday: 24 (21 half pints, a double gin and a tequila)
Sunday: 11 (3 cans of London Pride, 1 pint of 80' and 2 budvars)
Total: 63

Blimey. In my defence, I was doing the monopoly pub crawl on Saturday. Still, doesn't look good, does it?

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 25 November 2002 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

0-10 I think.

Graham (graham), Monday, 25 November 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, last week:
monday: nothing
tuesday: 3 pints SS stout
wednesday: 2 bottles guinness
thursday: 4 pints bitter, 1 pint guinness, 4 bottles lager
friday: 2 pints bitter, 2 (3?) pints guinness
saturday: 1 pint guinness
sunday: 3 pints guinness, 4 (5?) bottles lager

lumme, 50 (ish) units and i thought last week was quite quiet...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 25 November 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Last week:

Monday (home, evening): half bottle wine
Tuesday (home, evening): half bottle wine + 1 glass wine
Wednesday(out): 2 glasses wine; 2 glasses Leffe. mmmm....
Thursday:
Friday (out): 2 bottles of wine; 3 glasses vodka.
Saturday (home, lunch; out evening): 3 glasses wine
Sunday (home, lunch): 2 glasses wine

Erm 40-50? K-blimey this surprises me. But this was an unusual week: Wednesday a more typical night out than Friday.

alext (alext), Monday, 25 November 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

40 maybe? Yeah.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 25 November 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Depends who is asking; if it's a Doctor, usually say about 30, whereas the reality is probably 50.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 25 November 2002 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

AlexT, Carsmile and RickyT are muh homies! Let me work out a typical week:

Monday: nothing
Tuesday: 8 units (3 pints at pub quiz)
Wednesday: 5 units (half bottle of wine at home)
Thursday: 5 units (other half of above bottle)
Friday: 10 units (bottle of wine with mates)
Saturday: 13 units (nite-clubbin' pints)
Sunday: 3 units (wine with meal with parents)

= 44. Jesus! 28 is the government's recommended limit and 21 is the Medical Council's. I am a lush, even though I don't feel like a heavy drinker. Gah.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 25 November 2002 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Govt. limit has been increased to 28 for men (Yay!) and 21 for girlz (Yay!). Still way over though (boo).

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 25 November 2002 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

mark you were drinking lager on thursday, i saw you ;)

(and indeed bought you one ;))

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 25 November 2002 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Last Week:

monday: 5 (2 of those whopping bottles of Cobra)
tuesday: 6 (3 pints with Steve)
wednesday: 2 (1 can lager with Sarah)
thursday: 12 (6 pints with Magnus and Danny)
friday: 14 (at a guess - lots of beers with 'the usual')
saturday: 0
sunday: 0

Total: 39. About what I guessed actually. Probably down 10 units on a cpl years ago.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 November 2002 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

oh god i drink FAR too much. i couln't begin to estimate it though, i should keep a diary as well so i can horrify myself with my alcoholic leanings. average week - probably some wine with dinner and/or whisky afterwards most nights, yesterday i got through four pints of bitter and a couple of whiskies, the day before i had a couple of glasses of wine (to help get over hangover), the night before i had my share in SIX BOTTLES of the stuff. no wonder i feel like shite!

katie (katie), Monday, 25 November 2002 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Usually too much. Don't make me think about this.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 25 November 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

WOW you lot can drink some! I'd feel like a saint if it wasn't for the fact that I went on an all out binge on Saturday night and got drunker than I've ever been in my life (polished off a bottle of vodka before I even left the house), I'm still suffering today, haven't stopped throwing up yet and I suspect alcohol poisoning...
However I very rarely drink at home or on a skool night and as I'm getting old now hangovers restrict me to one wild night out at the weekend so I reckon I'm not doing too bad.

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh God, I try not to count. Every time I do it depresses me.

Monday: 1 (shot of cherry kirsch in hot chocolate to send me to sleep)
Tuesday: Nothing
Wednesday: 12 (Oh dear. My friend Becky's party followed by Nag Nag Nag. Two black russians, 4 JD and coke, 2 vodka and coke, half a can of Red Stripe)
Thursday: 5 (Gig with my mate Tom, 5 Jack Daniels and coke)
Friday: 1 (glass of wine with nice housemate)
Saturday: 2 (glasses of wine whilst babysitting cousins)
Sunday: 1 (brandy to put me to sleep)

Actually - only 22. Only one over recomended limit! Not as bad as I thought. Although my friend S is away this week and she and I have a bad effect on each other in the drinking complicated cocktails and wine stakes.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Mon - 8 units (few drinks after playing football)
Tue - 16 (the odd drink here and there just added up. I didn't get particularly drunk).
Wed - 22 (out with friend; vodka, wine, beer. I was pretty drunk, but able to walk properly and stuff)
Thu - 10 (2 pints before cinema, 3 after)
Fri - 13 (bottle of wine, and some vodka, at home)
Sat - 15 (out with girlfriend, wine + beer, got very drunk because it was consumed really quickly, and I made a fool of myself on the tube, and couldn't remember stuff the next day, etc)
Sun - 12 (bottle of wine + some whisky, at home)

Total: 96.

I remember started a "Who smokes the most?" thread here, and the answer was me as well. Clearly I am gonna die before anyone else here.
(Although I've seriously cut down on cigarettes recently).

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Monday, 25 November 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread certainly explains a lot about you all. To answer the question, though...I don't drink a whole lot at all most of the time, but I just got back from Vegas and it was probably 5 a night. There's currently a half pint of Creemore in my fridge, too, but no estimate on when it will be gone.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 25 November 2002 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't drink during the work week at all. On fridays I usually put back about 12 beers. saturdays, about the same. but these days its getting harder to drink two days in a row. this week will be an exception to the rule though, lots of holiday parties and reunions.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 25 November 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

mon - 2 pints perhaps??
wed - 5 or 6 pints
fri - 2 bottles wine between 3
sat - 3 or 4 pints
sun - 2 pints

about 30 units then. and about 2 hours of rogue leader on top of that.

Alan (Alan), Monday, 25 November 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe a couple of beers, a bit of wine? Some weeks go by and I don't have any at all...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Wednesday: 12 (Oh dear. My friend Becky's party followed by Nag Nag Nag. Two black russians, 4 JD and coke, 2 vodka and coke, half a can of Red Stripe)

wow, anna! you can actually remember how much you drank that night? the 13th was the biggest ruin in months for me!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Last week 17/11 – 24/11:

Sunday: bowling & pub – 6 pints bitter (12 units)
Monday: knackered, stayed in - 1 kir (_not_ royale, how much money do you think I have?), 1 large glass same white wine (3 units?)
Tuesday: nowt
Wednesday: bowling - 4 pints bitter (8 units)
Thursday: pub & club – 2 pints bitter, several evil expensive bottles lager (8 units?)
Friday: bowling with IBM (the Boy’s work do, highly bizarre) – 3 pints bitter (6 units)
Saturday: curry (out) & TV (in) – err a bottle-ish of wine (really 10 units? Golly)

Grand total: 47 units or so. This makes me look like an alcoholic bowling freak, but it’s not my fault, I swear. At least the bowling isn’t (and I’m still rubbish at it).

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i can't believe that i drink more than most london FAP-ers. does no-one else have a g+t when they get in from work most nights and then wine with dinner? and doesn't everybody spend sunday afternoon in the pub?

toby (tsg20), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

"put me to sleep" = my favourite phrase ever.

Graham (graham), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, last week:

Monday - 5 (Three little bottles of Stella and a couple of glasses of wine with dinner)
Tuesday - 4 (couple of pints after work)
Wednesday - 2 (wine with dinner, once again)
Thursday - 5 (see Monday, pretty much)
Friday - 4 (red wine, in a restaurant)
Saturday - Good god. How I am I supposed to remember these things? Lets say 14, at a conservative estimate.
Sunday - 8 (evening in the pub, leading to semi-drunken posts above)

That's 42 - okay because of a quiet Friday, I suppose. Recommended limit of 21 seems worryingly low, though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

(cz I imagine it being instant)

Graham (graham), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

It is fairly - well within about 10 minutes. I am worried about how much me getting to sleep depends on subtance abuse.

Gareth - that's not the night I went with you, it was the following week. Last Wednesday I ended up at my friend Camilla's playing with her new kittens at four in the morning.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the most any of you have had in one night? I was thinking about 34 or so when I went to see John Digweed, before and after, I really don't like prog so it was all necessary.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

best thread ever ;)

i feel much more normal now :)

i just hope no one from AA ever finds this thread...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

What disturbs me the most is coming home on a Friday and thinking "no I'll stay in tonight, I'm tired". Then eventually when I decide to go out because I want to see my friends I have a pint or two and all of a sudden it's the greatest night ever and so many more pints are consumed. I mean like 2 weeks ago I was planning on staying in, and not going to see Slam, I started drinking bottles of beer and all of a sudden I was out the door with a big grin on my face.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Thing is Ronan I don't remember how much I've had to drink on the nights I drink the most. A recent conversation:

"God, you were plastered on Monday when I saw you at ___"
"You were there? I'm really sorry I don't remember."
"Yeah you were flailing on a sofa."
"There were sofas?"

Even more disturbing because I usually remember everything even if hammered.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

8-10 on average

Jeff W, Monday, 25 November 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I seldom forget things but a few weeks ago my friend and I went out on a bender for Halloween and the next day being Friday we were out again. He said to me "remember when that pickup truck drove by with those guys who always listen to really loud gabba in it". I laughed along and said yeah! but I had no idea what he meant and was pretty scared.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, needing to be reminded of stuff is one thing (well, not that you often *need* to be reminded - by and large you'd rather forget) - actually forgetting stuff which no amount of memory jogging can revive, that's something else. When this happens, I get the ph34r something rotten - what else might I have done? I inevitable end up drinking less for, ooh, a week maybe?

A bottle of wine has 9-10 units in it. It's very important (especially if you're driving) to work out how many glasses you're getting from the bottle. I bet your life it's not 9 or 10...

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

We need a formula! Drinks over BMI, I say, or maybe drinks over weight actually would be better. I have a couple beers or glasses of wine nearly every night but sometimes even that makes me surprisingly tipsy since I'm just over a hundred pounds.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

My secret for 'low' (by London standards) consumption is to have a non-drinking fiancee, so no shared bottles of wine over romantic dinners etc etc. It's the pub or nothing for me.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 November 2002 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

A bottle of wine has 9-10 units in it.

What size bottle--750 ml or 1.5 l? I'd say that one 750 ml bottle of wine equals 5-6 units.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i wouldn't mind a few units myself right now

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

dan, where are you??

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

WHOAH! Look at the units on some of those drinkers!

(Josh, were you expecting a comment along those lines?)

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 05:08 (twenty-three years ago)

that will suffice yes

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 05:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Enough to get reasonably drunk twice in the last week week. That's pretty unusual though (and probably not worth the hurt the next day) but yeah, I'll have a few beers once a month or so. Sometimes one with dinner if there's nothing else in the fridge, but normally I don't drink at home. Tend to think drinking alone is a terrible idea (for reasons that are obvious to those that know me well).

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 06:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, unless your drinking 8% ABV wine, you're wrong J.lu. A unit of alcohol = 10 ml. A standard bottle of wine is 750 ml and is usually between 11 and 13% ABV. This works as between 0.11*750/10 = 8.25 and 0.13*750/10 = 9.75 units. (Perhaps it is also worth noting that your average pint of premium lager comes in at 5% ABV which gives 0.05*568/10 = 2.84 units, rather than the more commonly assumed 2)

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah to make the units system easily memorable the figures of 1 glass wine = 1 unit assume a 125 ml glass (most places serve 175 or even (shudder) 250); and 2 unit per pint assumes cooking lager. That this misleading info. might be MORE dangerous (eg in judging ability to drive) is a possibility

alext (alext), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

they should get rid of this units thing, it's enough to turn a man to drink.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh knackers I forgot about the cooking thing. That's where the extra 10 units went then.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

do wine gums contain alcohol?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm I have had about 10 units in the last 3 days (not including the wine I sloshed into some pasta sauce - 1 unit?). Which these days is about my average in a week I'd say.

(Liz, I am far more worried about your bowling units than your alcohol units.)

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i try not to drink during the week in an attempt to abort the beer baby. this means i binge at tweekend. maybe 5 or 6 (cans or pints) on a friday and 8 or 9 on a saturday. sunday, er, 4 or 5.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a great beer offer on lately which is ruining me.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Ranges vary vastly. It's either 0, or it's about 50. Depends on if we're touring or not. Giving us an open bar as a rider is a VERY dangerous thing. (Hello, Exeter...)

kate, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I just totted up last week as about 53, but having read RickyT's maths lesson you could up it to around 65-70. Blimey.
I knew last week was reasonably heavy, much more so than the average, but still...

Simeon (Simeon), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps it is also worth noting that your average pint of premium lager comes in at 5% ABV which gives 0.05*568/10 = 2.84 units, rather than the more commonly assumed 2

jesus. you can put me down for more like 70+ per week then. ow.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Beer offer ruining you? I have a cough that sounds like bronchitis and there's a two-for-one deal on packs of Camel Turkish Gold at my local convenience store. Ruin indeed.

Sunday-Wednesday = 0
Thursday = 9 (three cocktails at club in afternoon, six beers at night)
Friday = 3 (three beers at hockey game)
Saturday = 9 (four stiff cocktails at club + five subsequent beers)

= 21, which sounds about right (though with Ricky T's calculations, those cocktails probably count as 3 each, in which case you ought to add 14 to my score). I p#3@r drinking on weeknights because of family history, but are my weekend habits just as potentially bad?

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Monday, Tuesday = 4 bottles of beer each

Wednesday = 5 bottles of beer

Thursday = three glasses of wine

Friday = eight cans and three pint glasses of beer

Saturday = one bloody mary and um 18 bottles of beer.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had periods of frequent going out and getting drunk. Over the past few years, though, I've almost completely given up the drink. It's unusual for me to have more than a couple of drinks a month. Really, I don't miss it too much. Plus I have to drive everywhere in Seattle (as opposed to NYC, where I could just grab a cab or subway), and I'm petrified about drinking and driving to ANY extent, so...I guess I'm boring.

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 05:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought most lager was 4.3 percent? Unless you're drinking Stella or something.

why couldn't public health bros in all of these countries agree on a single unit of alcohol consumption, as it is it's like a forex graph

Looking back on this thread and the early 00s is like a different world. This week I've had two pints in a pub and a bourbon before bed a couple of nights and that's felt like a lot. Probably a max of a pint or two tonight. Saturday could be quite brutal though.

Yeah I've seen him post recently

NV that's great, when you put it like that; I guess that's one good thing about "units", I just wish they were a little less arbitrary - as Nakh says, not only is there no standardization but neither the value of a unit nor the recommended number of units is based on anything at all iirc

wins, Friday, 16 May 2014 09:48 (eleven years ago)

Good thing about units = monitoring your progress, if that wasn't clear.

this is the best thing about units

xp dare I ask what happened to Eyeball Kicks

I have pretty much kept up the same rate non-stop for the last 12 years. Maybe 5 days off in 2004, and probably about 10 in 2009. Overall, I'd estimate I've had maybe 25 days off alcohol since 1997, and not one since 2009.

I've cut down a little bit in the last 4 days, actually - maybe 10 units a day, and I'm looking to go lower. Turned 40 recently, getting a very slight beer belly, and I reckon I've had my fun now, so probably need to start acting normal.

I do feel very healthy though. Fit as a fiddle. Still looking young and handsome, if I may say so. I hardly smoke now, though - maybe 2 or 3 a day, sometimes none, unless I'm out - which has been a great help.

Yeah, I did. Getting itchy now though - gotta go somewhere new.

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 16 May 2014 10:11 (eleven years ago)

apols to EK for brusqueness of my post there! trust you'll understand my slight double take at it

recall being quite... alarmed, almost, when I first read about how the recommended no. of units came into being but I guess just coming up with a figure on the fly is (if anything) preferable to basing it on data which could never hope to actually represent the span of human bodies and their requirements

do you have a job?

conrad, Friday, 16 May 2014 10:31 (eleven years ago)

Got a good job, yeah. I am quite a responsible person nowadays, on the cusp of settling down. I cycle to work but this is not really exercise, and I did go for a run yesterday but that was the first one for months.

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 16 May 2014 10:38 (eleven years ago)

Oh god I always drink waaaay too much in spring. Also been doing the internet dating thing recently which doesn't help. Think I've had one day off in the last two weeks.

Yeah, one day off in two weeks sounds about where I am too. Not thrilled about it.

how's life, Friday, 16 May 2014 12:48 (eleven years ago)

Mostly just a beer or two per day, with maybe once every fortnight getting really bent on gin.

how's life, Friday, 16 May 2014 12:49 (eleven years ago)

none. seltzer for me

Started off the year with a pretty rigourously maintained two days a week off policy, but that went to pot as soon as the sun came out.

When I was a kid, I used to bring my mom's seltzer water out to the street when I was playing with my friends. One day, one of my pals said his mom told him the only people who drink that are recovering alcoholics who don't drink anymore.

I enjoy seltzer too though.

lol definitely had a sober alcoholic friend who drank shit loads of seltzer, like goes through several bottles a day

can't say i know others though

marcos, Friday, 16 May 2014 13:51 (eleven years ago)

seltzer is a nice thing to drink though when i want something different than water but i don't feel like having alcohol

marcos, Friday, 16 May 2014 13:52 (eleven years ago)

i pretty much have one beer a day. maybe i'll have 2 or 3 beers if i'm hanging out with friends. if i'm sick or exhausted i don't drink.

marcos, Friday, 16 May 2014 13:53 (eleven years ago)

About three glasses of red wine on weeknights with the occasional cocktail but I save the latter for weekends.

I don't drink to exhaustion anymore, largely because I'm driving more often these days.

Hang on, is seltzer what we call soda water (ie fizzy water out of a tap)?

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Friday, 16 May 2014 14:28 (eleven years ago)

~5 beers a week probably? sometimes as many as 15 units if there's a night or two out involved?

Mordy, Friday, 16 May 2014 14:30 (eleven years ago)

. if i'm sick or exhausted i don't drink.

See, I think if I added "don't drink when exhausted" I'd be already. Much of my drinking is because I'm exhausted, and that can get real circular.

how's life, Friday, 16 May 2014 14:52 (eleven years ago)

Using the British formula upthread, the week before last I consumed 106 units. It could be slightly higher since the Sunday and Monday were likely tame but I can't recall what I drank. It's a very good estimate., anyway.

I estimated 34 pints at an average alcohol content of 5.5%. I often drink IPAs at 6.2%, 6.5% and as high as 7%, so this is also conservative.

Seems like it was a heavy week, but when I add it up it's actually not incredibly far off the usual. Hmmmm.

Needless to say, that week felt really crappy, so I rapidly instituted a "no weekday drinking" policy for four weeks to see if it makes any quality of life improvements.

I was a binge drinker/barfly for a few years but now that I have a better handle on my physical & mental health I know that I can't drink more than a couple nights a week. I'd say three 12oz beers per week is my average.

thomasintrouble, Friday, 16 May 2014 16:51 (eleven years ago)

i almost never drink spirits. they've pretty much become just a special occasion thing. friends over or holidays and i might bring some bourbon out.

wine very rarely, too, just sips from my wife's glass here and there.

marcos, Friday, 16 May 2014 16:58 (eleven years ago)

I don't drink alcohol. So zero.

pandemic, Friday, 16 May 2014 17:04 (eleven years ago)

I drink one 6 oz. glass of red wine at my evening meal every day. It's extremely rare for me to drink either more than this or less. Equally rare for me to drink white wine, hard liquor, beer or cider these days. btw, this confession blows my old AAD persona all to hell.

Back when I was totally stressed out as the struggling parent of a child with massive health problems, I went through a decade of self-medicating with whiskey, rum, brandy, vodka or gin most nights. That had to stop, but it only happened as part of the 20 year process of getting our whole lives stabilized again, including a few years of unemployment-by-choice as I sorted myself out.

very seldom drink much more than a bottle of wine a day, average closer to half or the equiv in whisky or brandy

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Friday, 16 May 2014 17:26 (eleven years ago)

I probably average 3 beers a day, sometimes sub in a cocktail for 1 of those

down from a solid 5 a day 3-4 years ago, slowly but steadily cutting down

2-4 units of spirits (gin or bourbon) a week. Rarely, a beer on the weekends.

Typing that sentence, and realizing I wouldn't have fit into these pants a few years ago, makes me very happy. Shit was a little out of control for about a decade.

Survivalist Compound Row (B.L.A.M.), Friday, 16 May 2014 17:41 (eleven years ago)

Down to about a drink a week, at most. I've just lost my taste for it.

WilliamC, Friday, 16 May 2014 18:14 (eleven years ago)

About 6-8 units per week, mostly gin, rye or red wine. Considerably more (mostly beer) if away on vacation or out socializing (which is rare)
