ILX on Cloudflare - c/d?

Message Bookmarked

You might have noticed way more poxy fules around here over the last month (sorry). These have caused by the sheer number of AI bots now scraping ILX for training data, which ultimately overwhelmed the server.

To try and manage this better, I'm trialling Cloudflare (a service that helps control bot traffic, among other things).

There were a bumpy few hours earlier today, but it should be sorted now. So if you see any problems or anything unusual when trying to connect to ILX, please let me know here!

stet, Saturday, 5 April 2025 02:59 (one year ago)

Thanks for taking the time to set this up. Let's hope it succeeds in tamping down the AI bot scraping problem. If you ask me, firewalling bots, including search engines, would be a better option than leaving a wide open door to those AI LLM-training fuckers.

I couldn't access the site I think from Friday through Sunday, either via Chrome or Zing. It started working again on Zing last night, and I restarted Chrome and was able to get on again. Chrome had been complaining the site wasn't secure and mentioned too many redirects, but Safari wouldn't open it either.

Bee OK, Monday, 21 April 2025 01:58 (one year ago)

Of course we're having issues

Bee OK, Monday, 21 April 2025 02:07 (one year ago)

So I don't think Cloudflare is to blame after all. There seems to be at least two things going on – AI bot scraping AND someone is trying to hack the server (using attempts that would hack an MS-SQL database, which we don't use).

AI scraping brings us down from sheer load, the hack ends up doing ... something ... which means the server just stops responding even when it's not under load.

Unfortunately, the bots are using rotating IP addresses, so even when I block the worst offenders a new crop spring up quickly.

I think I'm going to try making the site readable only to those who are logged in. That will kill our search rankings until I figure something out there, but we can't go on like this anyway.

Thanks too for all the offers of funding. I don’t think it would help right now but it’s very appreciated

HI DERE, I help manage a small academic research network and deal with this bullshit somewhat regularly. I'm in on that 77 thread...

It has worked beautifully today.

Thanks for all your hard work stet. As others mention, if there is anything we can help with collectively or individually just shout.

Please do start a 77 thread if you have the time at all. It would be hugely useful for me as we've been struggling with the same "AI" LLM scrapers hoovering up our server resources for months now at my work and not really getting anywhere on a decent solution.

Alba, Sunday, 27 April 2025 03:47 (one year ago)

part of me thinks that the problem is already a maze of links - if it loads a page and tries to follow every link on that page then every single post has a link to itself and to the author and every page has navigation links top and bottom, links to other pages full of links. as a person these links are convenient but a dumb trawler, one that doesn't care about much other than sucking up data, is just going to batter such a site.

koogs, Sunday, 27 April 2025 06:25 (one year ago)

Fast forward to weeks later, a bot is found trapped in ilx's AI labyrinth - unshaven, malnourished, muttering Zappa lyrics

triste et cassé (gyac), Monday, 28 April 2025 07:36 (one year ago)

I've zero clue as to how it would be implemented but would it work to have a daily / weekly / monthly snapshot visible to the un-logged-in (casuals and bots) with live updates for registered users? Seems like an efficient crawler would only bother digging down if something had changed since last visit, so it might limit the frequency of requests.

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 28 April 2025 07:44 (one year ago)

Logged-out users no longer see permalinks or userpages; I'm hoping that helps with crawler logic like koogs suggests.

stet, Monday, 28 April 2025 08:53 (one year ago)

Final change: non-members (that is, browsers where a user has never logged in to ILX) will get forced to use Cloudflare's cache - for up to four hours. So the site will look stale if you've never logged in.

stet, Monday, 28 April 2025 09:01 (one year ago)

Some slightly weird things still going on, not every new answer is showing up on Site New Answers?

Blake the Messenger (Tom D.), Monday, 28 April 2025 11:48 (one year ago)

... ignore that the weirdness is at my end.

Blake the Messenger (Tom D.), Monday, 28 April 2025 11:59 (one year ago)

Logged-out users no longer see permalinks or userpages; I'm hoping that helps with crawler logic like koogs suggests.

have you considered removing "View Previous Page..." and leaving only the "show all messages (173 of them)" urls for logged out viewers?
probably orders of magnitude less impactful than killing the permalinks but on long threads might save a few extra requests as the bots pointlessly crawl up the post history

chihuahuau, Monday, 28 April 2025 20:43 (one year ago)
