haven't decided which one is my favorite (tho the aujla family is the leader in the clubhouse).

of course scorsese's living room looks like that!

yeah, me too.. it looks like she couldn't give a shit that the new yorker is coming to photograph her living room, zero tidying up

more than half of these are really self-conscious / showy or exhibit exhausting taste especially for a living room, which begs the question what is a living room for, and surely these are filling different functions for the owners.

my personal favs are:

colson whitehead's actually looks inviting and private.
i have a soft spot for steinhem's. the bric-a-brac is beautiful. lovely colors. idk it just feels really pretty to me in a pure sort of way.
aoc's is very aoc and good i think.
i like ratajkowski's, strong taste statements but still lived-in

the ones with minimal or unstructured furniture are exhausting for me in a different direction - furniture is good.

five six seven, eight nine ten, begin (map), Monday, 5 May 2025 21:05 (one month ago)

spike lee's feels like a barnes and noble.
the investor's sucks obviously, so does agnes gund's - how a room with so much tony modern art in it can feel so depressing idk, it's surely an achievement.

many of these folks are surely rich enough to have a fancy "living room" for entertaining and a separate "family room" for actually hanging out

which would also explain lack of tvs

Gravitated towards comfort: Sarah Sherman, Colson Whitehead, AOC. I could relax there.

Resident Neutral (WmC), Monday, 5 May 2025 21:27 (one month ago)

xp and for some it's obviously an extension of their work.

of the semi-private ones i like whitehead's, it's very "gentleman bachelor" in a comforting kind of way.

the williamsburg comedian, i should like that sort of thing in theory because it's the closest to my own living room experiences, but something about it feels date-rapey to me lol.

five six seven, eight nine ten, begin (map), Monday, 5 May 2025 21:31 (one month ago)

Conceptually, the Dare guy's was the most immediately appealing — a couch big enough to lie down on, and multiple stacks of books on the floor — but the couch looks uncomfortable. Whitehead's couch is much better; I could work from there. Mostly, though, looking at all of these places just reminded me that even if I had a ton of money I wouldn't want to live in New York. I'm convinced that if you showed me a full floor plan for at least half these places they'd be smaller than my apartment.

hopefully the dare guy just moved in. maybe he bought the couch for this. same vibe with the restauranteurs. you know they don't spend much time there.

the only one that repulses me on a taste level is vickie paladino's. close in spirit to my mother's get-everything-from-tj-maxx ethos. some of these people are so monstrously rich i can't detect anything else going on.

doe on a hill (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 6 May 2025 01:36 (one month ago)

Voted Sarah Sherman because I can relate to that living room, I've been in that living room or at least its cousins. The Aujlas is the prettiest. Agree that Chloe S.'s is great too, and feels very much her. AOC's is definitely chill-worthy, I imagine she made sure there was nothing on display over $200 (possibly including the couch).

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 6 May 2025 02:17 (one month ago)

I agree. I like Sarah Sherman's apartment. Lots of mismatched furniture in a very appealing sense that all seems to go together, with thrift store items and a sense of history, at least recent history

I didn't know that Ella Emhoff is a textile artist. I love the shelves full of big spools of yarn. It screams privilege, but all of these photos do

I also love the apartment of Aaron Aujla and Emily Adams Bode Aujla, it is beautiful and opens out onto a small courtyard. But talking about privilege. The West Village has become so expensive it might as well be Sagaponack or Atherton

Dan S, Tuesday, 6 May 2025 23:52 (one month ago)

xp I like their carpet and their sofa and the red stool, and they seem like a happy couple.

I have friends in NY who have more amazing apartments than these, partly because they are kind of great spaces but mostly because they feel lived in in a way that these don't

Dan S, Wednesday, 7 May 2025 01:01 (one month ago)

I don't really understand the space in the front of the picture in Chloë Sevigny's apartment, but I like her interest in art, especially that on-fire artwork layered against another, and that she's willing to stack the paintings she loves and doesn't give a fuck

I have friends who live in SoHo, but whenever I go there it seems really commercial to me now. I think it might have something to do with the Path train from New Jersey. I feel like it has turned into the Paramus Park mall. It seems like all of Manhattan is turning to an amusement park

Dan S, Wednesday, 7 May 2025 01:02 (one month ago)

to the people saying “not enough books”.. most of these are a shot of one wall, often he wall containing the couch, maybe the books are on another wall? or they keep their books in the office or bedroom?

Dan S, Wednesday, 7 May 2025 01:26 (one month ago)

The accompanying blurb ends with a note about how any living room should “tell a story”, but most of these, the story that they seem to tell is just “i own property in New York.”

displaying a ton of books/records is the easiest hack to get conversations started when people you don’t know super well come over tho

it’s too easy and tempting to fall back on and it backfires, i used to be more prone to essentialist thinking or something and i am so sick and tired of trying to communicate with people through the barrier of a record collection that blocks off more spontaneous and sensual and playful kinds of friendships

I have friends who live in SoHo, but whenever I go there it seems really commercial to me now. I think it might have something to do with the Path train from New Jersey. I feel like it has turned into the Paramus Park mall. It seems like all of Manhattan is turning to an amusement park

doe on a hill (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 7 May 2025 04:40 (one month ago)

soho was already overwhelmingly commercialized when i was in high school, it is a shopping area for tourists now, which is not the same as a theme park
i mean times sq has bowl-o-rama or whatever it’s called, has madame tussauds and ripley’s and dave and busters and the empire cinema and a fancy restaurant with a revolving floor. you can go up to the top of the empire state building at 2 AM, what does soho have that’s so fun? the museum of ice cream?

25 years ago it was a shopping area for rich punk kids, with canal jeans and x large and 6 or 7 outposts of yellow rat bastard with different names, but there were still a whole bunch of "alternative spaces” that are mostly gone now. what’s still there? the drawing center, artists space i guess. printed matter moved to chelsea. exit art and art in general both moved, then closed in quick succession… there used to be more places like that. w village is like madison ave south now, buuuti think washington sq park sorta bounced back anyway, it’s weird.

doe on a hill (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 7 May 2025 04:52 (one month ago)

I have older artist friends who still live on Greene Street, and friends who live on lower Broadway

Two of my best friends and my goddaughter left West Chelsea 3 years ago, moving to LA and back to SF. It was fun visiting them there and walking the High Line early in the morning, but it became mostly so crowded with tourists that it really did seem like a theme park

Dan S, Wednesday, 7 May 2025 23:20 (one month ago)

So many of these are terrible and i feel like some of these richer people just don't "live" in their houses, you know? You can tell the people who do. I like Lin-Manuel and the teachers for having pianos. AOC and Sara Sherman for looking actually lived-in. A few of them clearly live in tiny lofts which makes sense for NYC. All the actually rich cunts just look completely miserable and their homes look like cold dusty museums.

your pad looks great! I'd totally forgotten about tinypic, I used to use that all the time like twenty years ago

If this works, the posted image herein will be of my own living room, thus explaining my love, and vote, for Casa Sherman:

brony james (k3vin k.), Friday, 9 May 2025 00:54 (one month ago)

Dan S, how big is that painting, and how did it arrive at your house? It's probably bigger than many a NYC studio apartment!

henry s, Friday, 9 May 2025 00:55 (one month ago)

andy your place looks great too!

brony james (k3vin k.), Friday, 9 May 2025 00:57 (one month ago)

and dan’s! different vibe but very tasteful

brony james (k3vin k.), Friday, 9 May 2025 00:57 (one month ago)

thanks! yeah we should do a 'top pads of ILX' thread for sure

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 9 May 2025 00:59 (one month ago)

I really like Ratajkowski's couch - would vote for that as best furniture piece

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 9 May 2025 01:04 (one month ago)

The painting in my house is more than 11 feet wide and is 8 feet tall! Fortunately it is composed of two canvases that are bolted together. If you look closely there is a seam down the middle, so it was easy to get into the house.

Dan S, Friday, 9 May 2025 02:14 (one month ago)

I like your place henry s, there are a lot of interesting things to notice! I'm wondering what that little creature is sitting on the table to the right in your photograph

Dan S, Friday, 9 May 2025 02:36 (one month ago)

Thanks! That's a little wooden monkey wearing a fez:

Whoah, nice MCM vibe! And a skylight! I f you have a cat, I bet they love that.

henry s, Friday, 9 May 2025 15:55 (one month ago)

ty henry, yeah cat is snoozing just out of frame, ha. they have a love/hate relationship with the skylight bc it leaks like a sieve when it rains

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Friday, 9 May 2025 16:13 (one month ago)

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 9 May 2025 16:37 (one month ago)

How are all your living rooms so clean and tidy?!?!

emil.y, Friday, 9 May 2025 16:49 (one month ago)

the stove was nice until this winter when a huge crack busted open in the side! trust me, its a potemkin living room, barely held together with twine & chewing gum

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 10 May 2025 08:57 (one month ago)

I’m pretty sure Chloe S moved that painting into shot to make it more interesting, it looks very staged to me.

I also noticed the absence of plants - do weird! Which is why I love the Aujila room.

Madchen, Saturday, 10 May 2025 13:51 (one month ago)

Not arguing with you, but Chloe is very good friends with artist of said painting.
