more than half of these are really self-conscious / showy or exhibit exhausting taste especially for a living room, which begs the question what is a living room for, and surely these are filling different functions for the owners.

my personal favs are:

colson whitehead's actually looks inviting and private.
i have a soft spot for steinhem's. the bric-a-brac is beautiful. lovely colors. idk it just feels really pretty to me in a pure sort of way.
aoc's is very aoc and good i think.
i like ratajkowski's, strong taste statements but still lived-in

the ones with minimal or unstructured furniture are exhausting for me in a different direction - furniture is good.

spike lee's feels like a barnes and noble.
the investor's sucks obviously, so does agnes gund's - how a room with so much tony modern art in it can feel so depressing idk, it's surely an achievement.

the williamsburg comedian, i should like that sort of thing in theory because it's the closest to my own living room experiences, but something about it feels date-rapey to me lol.

Conceptually, the Dare guy's was the most immediately appealing — a couch big enough to lie down on, and multiple stacks of books on the floor — but the couch looks uncomfortable. Whitehead's couch is much better; I could work from there. Mostly, though, looking at all of these places just reminded me that even if I had a ton of money I wouldn't want to live in New York. I'm convinced that if you showed me a full floor plan for at least half these places they'd be smaller than my apartment.

Voted Sarah Sherman because I can relate to that living room, I've been in that living room or at least its cousins. The Aujlas is the prettiest. Agree that Chloe S.'s is great too, and feels very much her. AOC's is definitely chill-worthy, I imagine she made sure there was nothing on display over $200 (possibly including the couch).

I agree. I like Sarah Sherman's apartment. Lots of mismatched furniture in a very appealing sense that all seems to go together, with thrift store items and a sense of history, at least recent history

i live in one of the most income-unequal manhattan nabes, i think. it’s a lot more chaotic than before the pandemic, i think we really set a standard that it’s okay for petty convenience to be predatory and abusive.

soho was already overwhelmingly commercialized when i was in high school, it is a shopping area for tourists now, which is not the same as a theme park
i mean times sq has bowl-o-rama or whatever it’s called, has madame tussauds and ripley’s and dave and busters and the empire cinema and a fancy restaurant with a revolving floor. you can go up to the top of the empire state building at 2 AM, what does soho have that’s so fun? the museum of ice cream?

25 years ago it was a shopping area for rich punk kids, with canal jeans and x large and 6 or 7 outposts of yellow rat bastard with different names, but there were still a whole bunch of "alternative spaces” that are mostly gone now. what’s still there? the drawing center, artists space i guess. printed matter moved to chelsea. exit art and art in general both moved, then closed in quick succession… there used to be more places like that. w village is like madison ave south now, buuuti think washington sq park sorta bounced back anyway, it’s weird.

I have older artist friends who still live on Greene Street, and friends who live on lower Broadway

Two of my best friends and my goddaughter left West Chelsea 3 years ago, moving to LA and back to SF. It was fun visiting them there and walking the High Line early in the morning, but it became mostly so crowded with tourists that it really did seem like a theme park

So many of these are terrible and i feel like some of these richer people just don't "live" in their houses, you know? You can tell the people who do. I like Lin-Manuel and the teachers for having pianos. AOC and Sara Sherman for looking actually lived-in. A few of them clearly live in tiny lofts which makes sense for NYC. All the actually rich cunts just look completely miserable and their homes look like cold dusty museums.

The painting in my house is more than 11 feet wide and is 8 feet tall! Fortunately it is composed of two canvases that are bolted together. If you look closely there is a seam down the middle, so it was easy to get into the house.
