The New York Times has reported that at least 40 people, including civilians and soldiers, were killed in Saturday’s US attack on Venezuela. The estimate comes from a senior Venezuelan official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

I think to some extent yes, but I think it's also a recalibrating from a global power to a regional power. The US can become weaker globally while at the same time becoming stronger in its region.

I think this is partly ideological. I don't hold to the idea there are no principles at play, transactionalism, crime, and power ARE principles. It is morally wrong not to steal from those that you can steal from. If they can't defend their stuff then it doesn't belong to them. You only own what you can defend.

I think "what you can defend" is a problem for this particular model, because they seem to have a fantasy that they can run the whole hemisphere by parking some big boats in the Caribbean and sending occasional bombs or sorties in as needed. No occupation or management, just endless shakedowns. I don't think that's a viable model of domination.

Also, the inane triumphalism really does feel like an ersatz replay of the "Mission Accomplished" bubble, when Bush/Cheney were super psyched about taking out Saddam and people in the administration were openly talking about the "next steps" of basically rolling through the entire Middle East and North Africa, taking out insufficiently "anti-terror" leaders and governments. That talk didn't survive too long. Venezuela hardly looks like an actual triumph for American power right now, never mind a month from now.

Content is the primary unit of the Internet in the 2020s, and it’s not surprising that an administration would embrace it as part of a broader media strategy. What’s been surprising to me is how everyone now seems to think their primary job is to create content. The vice-president’s primary role is to go on X, the Everything App and defend the administration, the transportation secretary spends his time whining that people don’t dress up for flights and say thank you, the treasury secretary does TV hits to create clips to be reposted. It’s an entire administration of posters, headed by a guy who built his own social network to post on after getting banned from other ones.

Because this is an administration of content creators, the primary way to understand what they do isn’t as the creation of policy like a traditional Presidential administration but as a mechanism for the creation of flavored content. You can see this impulse for content overrunning the Federal government. The deputy assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division is having slur-filled meltdowns. DHS might as well be an arm of Stormfront given what they’re putting out. All they know how to do is post. Why this is happening makes its own kind of sense — in an administration of people glued to the content on their phones, creating content that JD Vance might post into the groupchat is the best way to prove your value. I have to wonder if creating Trump-flavored content is so popular among the administration because that’s the only way to reach the president now.

I’m old enough to remember when everyone said the internet isn’t real life, and it seems like that has been forgotten, and it’s been forgotten most by the people in power. That’s good news in a way — all of the effort that has been made to create Trump-flavored content isn’t going to create durable structures for cruelty, and that makes rebuilding when this is over easier. But this also comes with a hazard — you must keep yourself from believing the content is real if you want to keep your wits about you. If you fall for the content, you’ve fallen into the trap and you’re seeing them the way they want to be seen and not the way that they are.

Yeah, there is this dissonant almost surrealism — the gap between the imaginary world of the internet and right-wing media and the world we actually live in every day. I had that feeling strongly this afternoon hearing an NBC News account of Trump saying that he is the ultimate person in charge of Venezuela. And, like ... he's not. The only video I've seen makes it look like the car was actually trying to get away from an ICE agent, who then shot to stop them.

Noem was in Minnesota for a targeted operation Tuesday and was at the US southern border earlier Wednesday when she first publicly weighed in on the shooting.

After watching all of the available videos a few more times, I think the sequence is this: She is in her car, ready to pull out. She is not blocking the street. One car, I think an ICE vehcile, pulls out from behind her and easily passes by her, and she starts to roll forward a little to pull out herself — but then she sees the ICE truck coming and stops to let them go by her too. If she was a legal observer, as various reports suggest, probably she was planning to let the ICE vehicles by and then follow them to wherever they were going next.

But instead of going by her, the guy driving the ICE truck stops and decides to turn this into a confrontation with her. As he's walking toward her, she waves her arm and says a bit plaintively, "Just go around." (Not "I'm trying to go around," which is what I thought at first.) He barks, "Get out of the car, get out of the fucking car!" and starts pulling at her door handle. She then I think just figured OK, I should drive away since they're making a big deal out of it. She is 100% definitely not "trying to hit" the guy at her front left corner, whom she may or may not have even been aware of, and her wheels are clearly turned to head up the street, not toward him. That guy had his hand on her car — which was entirely his choice, of course — and so it looks like he maybe got pushed back a little, but again, she was turning away from him and he was clear of the vehicle almost immediately. At which point he shot and killed her. ICE entirely created this confrontation. She was just waving them by her.

okay just got back. I talked to school staff that was still outside the building. at about 3:45 ICE was in car pursuit of someone and they either crashed or skidded out in front of the school. They all ran up on school property, teachers formed a circle around the person to try to protect them. ICE released tear gas or a chemical agent. Took two people, I'm assuming an observer and the person they were chasing.

if there are any inaccuracies in this I don't know, but that's what I was told by people on the scene who were there. I'm sure it all happened very fast and was chaotic.

thankfully school gets out at 3:10 so most kids had been picked up by then.

There's so much shit being pushed out there, and it feels necessary if totally inadequate to push back against it. The footage shows multiple officers near an SUV stopped in the middle of the road. One officer demands the driver exit the vehicle and grabs the car handle. The SUV reverses, then begins to drive forward, which is when a different officer near the front of the car pulls his weapon and fires into the vehicle. Three gunshots are heard, as the firing officer backs away from the SUV. Moments later, the vehicle crashes.

As is so often the case with law-enforcement shootings, so much of the conversation is starting in the wrong place. The focus is all on the details of the confrontation, rather than asking why the confrontation happened in the first place. The guy in the truck with the flashing lights could have just driven past her, like the car in front of him had just done. She was literally waving for them to go by her. Him stopping and getting out of his car is what actually initiated the confrontation. The entire situation was created by ICE — not just in the broad sense of their presence in the city, but in the specific sense that they chose to have an angry confrontation with her, when they could have just driven right by.

You see that right in the beginning of the longest video clip. She starts to pull out, and then sees a car behind her pulling out so she stopped to let them go. Then the truck is coming next, and she just sits there waiting for them to go too. I don’t think she was blocking anything.

The Trumpers have tried to justify the murder of Renee Nicole Good by saying she tried to run over an Ice agent. Not only does the video evidence show the officer was not in the path of her vehicle, but there are also three other important factors showing that ICE’s claim is complete B.S. I know this, because when I was a prosecutor, I prosecuted cases of individuals accused of trying to run over a police officer as “Assault with a Motor Vehicle.”

First, the accused were almost all exclusively men. Women did not seem, at least statistically, to have acrimonious interactions with police officers. Second, I never witnessed a guilty verdict on any trial of these cases. If any of my former colleagues I have tagged saw a guilty verdict, please let me know in the comments. But speaking to jurors after the trial, they never seemed to think that the accused was actually trying to run over or harm the officer. This makes sense as the level of evil and depravity required to kill a law enforcement officer usually entails premeditation with a meathod of escape not found in public areas like busy streets. Lastly, and most important, in none of these cases, did the officer discharge a weapon, let alone, shoot the accused. Police officers go through extensive training to avoid discharging weapons unless absolutely necessary. The ICE officer in question was obviously NOT properly trained. This is a major problem. Untrained law enforcement with a directive to harass people they find “suspicious” has created a dangerous situation and people are rightfully weary of ICE.

A few weeks back, ICE agents in Key Largo, Florida stopped a US Citizen and forced her out of her car for no reason whatsoever. She was not speeding and was not given any citation. Agents appear to be harassing people just because they look “foreign.” For this reason, people are becoming rightfully suspicious of ICE. I have first-hand knowledge of LEGAL IMMIGRANTS who are afraid to travel within the State of Florida for fear of being stopped and harassed by ICE. It is because of this that ICE needs to leave American cities and go back to the border, where they were always designed to be.

I just keep thinking about normal damage control: 'We're opening an immediate investigation, let's wait for the facts, the officer is on administrative leave while we conduct our investigation, we're reviewing our policies.. ' etc. etc.

it only seems that way because they control nearly all traditional media and social media but you really have to work hard to maintain such a powerful reality distortion shield. I felt this way after Charlie Kirk got killed, the way half the country seemed to believe this guy was the modern MLK and that his assassination was a 9/11 type event that necessitated the destruction of one of the two major political parties in this country. this lasted for all of two days. it turns out way way more people cared about Jimmy Kimmel going off the air for a week. only a month later the man's name was a punchline. my son asked me one day after school what it meant to get "Charlie Kirked" because apparently that is now playground slang for 5th graders. like you can say all you want about what a hero Charlie Kirk was but all the actual evidence out there points to him being a confrontational Nazi shithead. there's not a single clip of him that makes him look like anything but. and so it is here as well. you can Zapruder this shit all you like but at the end of the day the only way you can justify her death is by arguing she deserved it for being a liberal. you gotta be as much of an asshole as Charlie Kirk was.

It depends on what we think the administrations goal is. If the goal is to persuade people to share their view, then it doesn't help their case at all. But I don't think thats what the administrations goal is

If their goal is to further infuriate and incite those of us who are not loyal fascists so that we might act out our anger in violence, then their choice to release the video was well taken. Hard not to take that bait, but when you are as numerous and therefore powerful as their opponents, there is no need to kill or maim to prove our power.

One of the regulars at my Starbucks is a retired cop, 18 years with MDPD and another few with my university, and he is, shockingly, a liberal, though you'd never know from his cursing and looks. Cops were not allowed to shoot into vehicles unless their lives were in imminent danger, he said, and get ready for an Internal Affairs review even if he thought his action justifiable.
