House of Lords commissioner cannot investigate a complaint about a former member but I’m not sure that rule exists for the lower house, at least not that I’ve seen. The receipt and use of the money and accusations are likely something that could be pursued under other avenues. Electoral Commission scope applies to people who aren’t current MPs anyway. They can refer cases to the police etc.

Haven't actually ever heard any odes to the high street but I imagine the soft leftish stance you mention there to be similar to what it is elsewhere I've lived - a valuing of "traditional commerce" in the face of multinational chain supermarkets. This opposition does indeed sometimes take on nostalgic tones but I don't think it is purely reactionary in the way reform nostalgia is; after all, often the stores and stalls being defended are owned by immigrant communities.

Not at all my experience! There's like half a dozen markets in areas of London I don't even go to that I know of entirely because of all the discourse around their possible closures.

The gentrification bit seems strongly weighted towards London and Manchester, i think. The wider 'death of the high street' is much more likely to be around boarded-up shops, betting parlours or fly-by-night businesses catering to stuff you can't easily buy online. Like the 'death of the pub', it's probably more about further atomisation than anything else. Drinking at home, ordering from Amazon and driving to an out-of-town supermarket has none of the sense of being part of a living community that going down the high street on a Friday night / Saturday morning does - but, equally, the reaction to 'fifteen minute cities' shows a pretty strong rejection, on the right, of actually wanting to change that.

LG - It matters because unlike you I don't think what is good today or this week or month. I am interested in how places like Clacton go from voting Tory and Reform long term, as the situation is dire.

He was cleared of the plagiarism allegations, I believe, but he’s pretty obviously embellished a lot about his early career and personal back-story.

Gopal was really good on this whole incident, yes

I think the university where he did his PhD announced that it had investigated and dismissed the plagiarism claims, but it's baffling that it did - it looks like a pretty clear-cut case, with dozens of unattributed big chunks of text reproduced with only the lightest of editing. He also had some already published journal articles corrected to add references, e.g. https://www.mdpi.com/2076-0760/12/12/672, and it looks to me that the extent of the 'correction' required would have been grounds for retraction in many other fields or at other journals. I don't think this discredits his scholarship entirely (or discredits the field entirely, as some of the reactionary voices have claimed), but it is something much more substantial than some previous social media-driven plagiarism uproars (almost always targeting people of colour), where what's been identified is often more like run of the mill sloppy scholarship.

One of the strange things is that in the absence of public outcry the universities don't really seem to care about these cases, or don't have the procedures in place to deal with them effectively (or both). The William O'Reilly case that The Guardian article notes (where he copied from his students' essays, and I've read that there's a lot more from him that hasn't been fully reported on yet) is a particularly egregious one, but there are many more examples out there.

it seems a problem that all the made-up stuff about running through a forest without breaking any twigs or whatever appears to have been taken seriously and considered part of this person's qualities, like i guess suggests kind of weird racism refracted through a hiring process that's trying to show that institution isn't racist. also just like, i assume they don't have white professors who propagate this sort of heroic borderline-magical personal branding.
