How long have you been here?

I'm sure we've done this before, but, y'know, whatever...how long have you been posting? Exact date, if you can find it, or just the rough area. My first post was February 20th 2002. I talked out of my ass, mainly. What about you?

(Note: this is not to turn into an Old ILM vs Nu ILM thread! Remember that!)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think somewhere around April or May of 2001. "Here" meaning ILM, though, as ILE didn't appear until a little bit later.

Though actually I didn't start on ILE until the third/fourth day cos I'd gone on holiday when DG decided to go ahead and started.

ILE day one.

ILM some months before ILE day one.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I come and go as none really know, but the first time I uh, came, was first week of September, 2001 (right before da world went haywire)

V or maybe Vee, Monday, 2 December 2002 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM: September, 2001, after da world went haywire. I still haven't gotten around to posting an introduction yet, though. (I was going to do so for my one-year posting anniversary, but didn't.)

ILE: Was ILE around by then? I forget. I started using ILE a few months later, I think.

on ILE, from the beginning. Mwah hah hah.

ILM, I was trying to find out how long i'd been posting. the first post i made, i think was in about december 2000, but i seem to recall i'd been reading it for a few months before i actually had the guts to post. i'll check and make sure... oh yes, 5th december, 2000. i was banging on about some dirty dronerock boy from hoxton. some things never change...

ile: 9 June 2001

ilm: 6 march 2001

Since the start of both, though admittedly I was initially grouchy about ILE.

september 2002, im still very new i spose.i was just thinking the other day when i saw ron in a thread, that he was the first to say hi and welcome! thanks ron :-)

awww.... thanks Mark! (I'm scared of ILM too)

C J (C J), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, used to lurk on the old ILM from time to time after linking off Momus' website, mainly trolling for new tunes. I didn't really start posting until mebbe a month or two ago, can't really remember what drove me to do so. Probably because in "real life" it's pretty tough to put together a good-sized group of people who are all intelligent and reasonably interesting. First looked at ILE about a week ago.

webcrack (music=crack), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM in about early February this year, moving on to ILE a little bit later.

Bout a month ago...although I never actually posted until i realised my roommates were using my e-mail address to post stupidly...figured it was all the same as I'd probably have posted stupidly also....

B, Monday, 2 December 2002 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

First post on ILM was in Dec. 2000

Michael Bourke, Monday, 2 December 2002 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

my firstest EVAH post was on ILM January 1st 2001, and it was about The Associates...I remember these things...

I pressed the buttons required to start ILE but the ILM posters had already created it...

Really not sure. I think its been pretty consistently since I googled Emanuelle Parenin a few years ago. But have come across a couple of things that made me wonder if I had been on earlier, around the milenium. I was doing a lot online around that time.
Think there was probably another Stevo here too. I don't remember the 2lp vs thread with MBV that I saw yesterday.

Stevolende, Sunday, 26 April 2015 23:12 (ten years ago)

in 3 days, it will be my two year anniversary with this dn. first time i tried posting was in july 2011 but i was scared off that time.

<3

I first posted here on May 21, 2006 and started posting regularly in September. since then I've made about 9,380 posts (8,470 as unregistered and 910 as...registered). I probably ended up here by googling the Olivia Tremor Control or Mark Lanegan or whatever indie rock bands I was listening to as a college freshman. the second thread I ever started (a shameless piece of clickbait) has gotten more replies than anything I've started since.

the geographibebebe (unregistered), Monday, 27 April 2015 00:10 (ten years ago)

i started lurking in spring of 2004, tipped off by friend and former ilx regular, chris p. don't think i started posting regularly until maybe 2007ish, mostly about basketball. not much has changed in the interim.

Clay, Monday, 27 April 2015 00:19 (ten years ago)

i started reading ilm in 2005, in autumn probably, as i was new to my freshman dorm at the time. only 2000 or so posts, i've taken a lot more than i've given back, sorry ilx

oh wow, i must have forgotten that era.

what a question

Treeship, Monday, 27 April 2015 02:17 (ten years ago)

According to Search function, I arrived in ILE on Sept 3, 2001. My first post was under another user name than Aimless. That was during the Greenspun era, when everything about a user's identity was as slippery as a greased pig. I drifted in from the Greenspun version of Ask A Drunk, which was my usual home.

Giant Purple Wakerobin (Aimless), Monday, 27 April 2015 05:22 (ten years ago)

My first post here was on May 12, 2002, after someone from the Fake Matador Bulletin Board migrated over here and began making nuisance posts as me. In September 2003, I'd hung around long enough that I decided I'd stay and I began using the name Johnny Fever.

j., Monday, 27 April 2015 06:36 (ten years ago)

Surprised by that. I've had Feb 5 2011 returned from the search engine. Would have thought it was a while earlier than that but that's still 4 years. Did think it was the late noughties.

& the first message i find there mentions Emanuele Parrenin.

I know I was on I Hate Music for a while before that anyway. So maybe I'm just thinking of it as earlier here too.

I had been thinking that there was a point where I had to reregister because the database was being updated but I can't think when that was. O(r if i had been using a different sign in name than Stevo or Stevolende before that.

Stevolende, Monday, 27 April 2015 17:37 (ten years ago)

August 2006 which feels like 5 years ago but my research bears out that its actually almost 10 years ago...????????/

weird to me that ilx only has 5,000+ registered users for some reason. given how long it has been here. i'm in a facebook group - where i spend a lot of my time now - and they got up to 6.000 members in a heartbeat. easier to join stuff on facebook obviously...

scott seward, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 14:06 (ten years ago)

even more puzzling considering all those socks

ultimate american sock (mh), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 14:11 (ten years ago)

Accounts have presumably been purged over time. I found a third login where I wrote a single post under my real name but it looks like the account no longer exists.

More Fetid Than Fêted (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 14:13 (ten years ago)

If you don't log in over the course of six months, the account is purged.

how's life, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 14:17 (ten years ago)

So 5,000 users who have logged in over the last 6 months.

i was a lurker in the pre-ILE I Love Music era, found through Freaky Trigger of course. I distinctly remember the very beginning of ILE, and reading it in my college computer lab while supposedly working on papers. started posting more or less (usually less) around 2001. this is my 5220th post.

5,000 users sounds like a lot to me, feels like there's only a few hundred regular posters

I think I must have been here from around 2007. I was just thinking that I had a sign in that I can't quite remember some variationon Pelucidar or parennin somewhere between the 2 of those, was assigned to me on first signing in.
If unused accounts are purged after 6 months and I reset up my account when the forum moved I've probably lost any messages before 2011. So not sure still.
I moved into this flat in late 2006 and set up internet in early 2007 which was the first time I had home internet. Had previously been using a University account borrowed from a friend. I don't remember if I had used ILX before I got my own computer so can't remember when still. Just think it was before 2011 and may have been a while after 2007

2001 I think, but I just used to make up a different name every time I posted. In fact, one of the first threads I posted on with this name (in 2002) was started by me with a different name, and then 75% of the subsequent posts are me under various other names too. It was a great discussion.

2002 d k (i was in high school, ilm pop music theory was exciting, pharrell with his shirt off, ethan p imitations, getting my first blowjob while listening to freeway, any bumped thread from this period and i scan it already blushing for any embarrassing shit i said)
2004 william wiggins (like a stiff british music writer parody concept but then just talking about da band and cassidy singles in no caps, ten posts about nas in a row)
2004 cloverlandthug (ten posts about lil flip in a row, in hindsight chamillionaire sucked)
2007 dylannn (talked about china and working at a hotel, less interested in posting about music except nas and lots of posts with no responses or not very interested responses months later such as http://ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=40&threadid=93677 and ITT -_------->>> pictures of william t vollmann (no shops allowed) and lethbridge and selected films of joey wong 王祖賢 1984 - 2004).
roughly 5000-6000 across all four?

i think i've been here under various names for eleven (!) years, and still never once been invited to the secret board :(

Since the start of both, though admittedly I was initially grouchy about ILE.

I'm pretty sure there's a post somewhere where stet broke down the entire ilx user base scientifically. I can't find it at the moment, but there's this:

the lurker pool for ilx is huuuuuuuuuuuuge

-- strongohulkington, Wednesday, April 25, 2007 8:28 PM (5 months ago)

(really, really huge. Scary huge)

I still long for the days of a screenshot of 1 Active Users (that isn't after an outage)

I remember ILE starting and never even clicked on it until 2004ish as i was only interested in reading about music (hence why people long for old ILE lol )

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 20:26 (ten years ago)

Yeah, I stayed on ILM for a while when I started. ILE seemed weird and scary to me. I did not love everything. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to ILX Heaven.

how's life, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 20:33 (ten years ago)

been here since summer 2004. only posted a lousy 2,444 times.

12 yrs ffs

mookieproof, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 00:16 (ten years ago)

Yeah, I stayed mostly on ILM for years before dipping a toe into ILE. I think I migrated to ILNFL before I even went to ILE.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 00:25 (ten years ago)

I feel like I read somewhere that lurker / contributor ratio on forums tends to be 90%/10%, so.... ~5000 posters, ~50000 lurkers...?

Realhiphopshire (sleepingbag), Wednesday, 29 April 2015 01:28 (ten years ago)

Or, you know, whatevs the correct math is 🎃

Realhiphopshire (sleepingbag), Wednesday, 29 April 2015 01:30 (ten years ago)

I think you posted a 10%/100% which means lurkers are 100% and we are the posting 10% which seems about right
