jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, Ally? Would you mind emailing me about how you accomplished this? If I recall, we've had slightly similar past experiences with school, and I'd love to know how you made this possible.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally that rox, and so du u

Oh awesome, Ally! Uptown Power!!!

Are you doing the CU General Studies thing?

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Woohoo! Kick ass and take names! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally, you're my hero all over again.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats, Ally! Well done! What are you studying?

(Obviously if you were an English student it would be another matter, bloody taxes etc.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay Ally! (Sarah Lawrence narrowly escpaes the *maelstrom* that is Ally entering their placid environment!) And yay for us! We get to keep Ally in NYC! But how are we gonna hook up with all that HOT Bronxville Action that bnw was telling us about?

Melissa: Have you considered applying to Sarah Lawrence?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah Lawrence doesn't accept students with GEDs.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh bummer. How to hook up with the HOT BRONXVILLE ACTION (oh no! googlers!) then?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Way to go !
I almost went to Columbia, the campus is great and so many opportunities, I could not face moving to NYC and then being totally broke there, so I'm here at Brown instead. Graduate or undergraduate? What are you going to study ?

daria g, Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

keep ya eyes on her Ba-ronx-a Onx Onx
take her thong off and her ass go BOOM

Daria, do you know the Brown handshake?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

EW.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I have heard a great deal about so-called Brownian motion.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Daria: is Providence the hotbed of radicalism and cute design students I imagine it to be? If so, I'd like to hear more about this Brownian motion.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Glückwünsche Sie rote heiße Ivy League Mutter! Ausgezeichnete Nachrichten!

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats, Ally! Stop by the J-School office and say hi to me next time you're up here.

Douglas, Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

congratulations ally! that's terrific.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

What Arthur said, but in Russian. Congrats, Ms. K.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah Lawrence doesn't accept students with GEDs.

Melissa, I'm going to email you once I get home from work but I know this isn't necessarily true, at least not recently - I went for an interview at SLC and they were very keen on me, and that's all I have too. Tho maybe for the transfer program it's different? When was the lsat time you looked into it? Never mind I shall email you shortly.

Everyone thank you for your nice thoughts, I am going to be an undergraduate. I study EUROPEAN MATTERS. I am going to be an AMBASSADOR. Or a DICTATOR.

Mary: We just go up to Bronxville, a friend of mine lives near there, we'll just crash his pad. I'm sure his wife and kids will be excited for this too. I know he will, he's a superfreak.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Way to go, Idaho. Congrats.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 5 December 2002 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

go smarty-pants! Bogota is beautiful this time of year!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 December 2002 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

European Matters sounds pretty broad, Ally!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 5 December 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"We just go up to Bronxville, a friend of mine lives near there, we'll just crash his pad."

Will the fun never end??

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 December 2002 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Way to go, Ms. Ally. You probably won't have as many green haired lesbians like at SLC, but at least the commute will be easier.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 6 December 2002 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

This is a good thing.

J (Jay), Friday, 6 December 2002 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow. Congratulations.

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 6 December 2002 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey that IS awesome. Count me amongst the seriously jealous. How are you managing to fund it?

Kim (Kim), Friday, 6 December 2002 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Shouldn't that be "Everyone congratulate me, please", young lady?

Aimless, Friday, 6 December 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay, Ally!!!

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 6 December 2002 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations. Forget the ambassador and go straight to dictatorship.

webcrack (music=crack), Friday, 6 December 2002 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

yay for Ally! what small unstable European country are you going to invade first?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 6 December 2002 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I have no idea how I am funding it! I'm thinking of street performances.

I'm going to invade ENGLAND.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 6 December 2002 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

congratulations ally!

ron (ron), Friday, 6 December 2002 01:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going to invade ENGLAND.

Be sure to bring that crazy foreign concept of public transport with you.

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 6 December 2002 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally was it your gangster walk or your gangster talk that did it?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 6 December 2002 01:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats Ally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so proud - you're entering the hallowed halls of undergrad ed just as i'm exiting them!!!

oh and pardon my ignorance, but what is SLC

Vic, Friday, 6 December 2002 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer whatever it is, they love it and they just won't let me be.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 6 December 2002 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

WOOHOO! Congratulations Ally!

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 6 December 2002 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Well done Ally - hope you have lots of fun!

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 6 December 2002 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

SLC = Sarah Lawrence College, where bnw learned how to be a poet, and Mary wants to learn how to, um, pick up poets, and um, fiction writers, and well, let's not be exclusionary... It is in a gated community a bit north of NYC proper. A very genteel former all girl's school (bnw was in bnw heaven) and can't you just see how Miss Ally would be perfect for their severed ranks.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 6 December 2002 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, indeed I can see it very clearly...was it unduly messy or scintillatingly dramatic ?i mispelled something, i just know it

Vi or Vee, Friday, 6 December 2002 03:09 (twenty-three years ago)

"was it unduly messy or scintillatingly dramatic ?"

wait was what? sorry Ally: derailing your thread to indulge my SLC fetish, yay Ally!

Mary (Mary), Friday, 6 December 2002 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

hm, maybe i'm too stupid, but did ally leave slc? i'm trying to doi too many things at once! and was that fun ort did she not want to leave?

Vi or Vee, Friday, 6 December 2002 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, Ally was never at SLC. She did apply there, which bnw and I thought would be a hoot if she went, but Columbia snapped her up first looks like. So now my hopes are resting with Melissa.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 6 December 2002 04:07 (twenty-three years ago)

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i get it. it's nice how yu an talk about people on ilx like they're not in the room, when they might be right there the entire time. hearing (reading) you.

Vic, Friday, 6 December 2002 04:17 (twenty-three years ago)

(That is because Mary reads too much. We are all just characters in some unwieldy metafiction story to her.)

bnw (bnw), Friday, 6 December 2002 05:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait -- you people actually exist outside of my imagination?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 6 December 2002 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you think I think that, yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 December 2002 07:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Half this thread is gibberish to me but hooray and well done!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 6 December 2002 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey ally make sure you do a year abroad as part of your course if you can (and can afford it, my year in Italy was that bit more expensive just because it was abroad). But also make sure you get to go to a proper european university. Not one of columbia's programmes abroad. They really suck. Not necessarily academically but in terms of getting immersed in a foreign society. (I met an ex-girlfriend on one of these programmes)

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 December 2002 11:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratumalations Ally :)

Archel (Archel), Friday, 6 December 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, well done. As a higher education institue myself I always feel great when I have new admissions.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 6 December 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah Lawrence (where I also went, but in my time the lesbians had blue and purple hair) is not in a gated community. And you can too have a GED to go there. Sometimes I thougt the only reason some of the students were there was down to huge donations from rich parents of 'troubled' trustas, but not too many of tose really.

Ally, CONGRATULATIONS.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 6 December 2002 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations Ally

H (Heruy), Friday, 6 December 2002 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Well done!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 6 December 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay Ally!

Graham (graham), Friday, 6 December 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey well done lady.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 6 December 2002 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations, well done Ally! There's obviously more to you than a big ass pretty face :)

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 6 December 2002 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice Job Ally!!!! I wish I was smart as you.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 6 December 2002 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Heres a song for you:

Josie's on a vacation far away
Come around and talk it over
So many things that I'd like to say
You know I like my girls a little bit older
I just wanna use your love tonight
I don't wanna lose your love tonight

I ain't got many friends left to talk to
No-one's around when I'm in trouble
You know I'd do anything for you
Stay the night - we'll keep it under cover
I just wanna use your love tonight
I don't wanna lose your love tonight

Try to stop my hands from shakin'
Somethin' in my mind's not makin' sense
It's been awhile since we've been all alone
I can't hide the way I'm feelin'

As you leave me please would you close the door
and forget what I told you
Just 'cause you're right - that don't mean I'm wrong
Another shoulder to cry upon
I just wanna use your love tonight
I don't wanna lose your love tonight
Yeah
I just wanna use your love tonight
I don't wanna lose your love tonight
Lose your love Lose your love
Lose your love

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 6 December 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

That's fantastic. Chris you are my favorite.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 6 December 2002 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

You should really play it every day to start your day. It will surely brighten it!

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 6 December 2002 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sarah Lawrence (where I also went, but in my time the lesbians had blue and purple hair) is not in a gated community."

Hi Suzy, oh I know, I was just exaggerating for effect! Sorry everyone, I will end the incomprehensible SLC PUNK injokesterism (that is most likely only amusing to myself) right now. Yay Ally!

Mary (Mary), Friday, 6 December 2002 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

So are we going to my friend's house near Bronxville or not? Dude, he's home from work today, he called in sick. We could watch Spongebob with his son then go to SLC.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 6 December 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey congrats, Ally!!

Search: The Mill Korean, The "Balboa" sandwich at the Hamilton Deli, Lofty marble Alma Mater statue (which means "nourishing mother", if you wish to impress the friends you make there) in front of Loews Library, St. John's Cathedral and nearby Hungarian pastry shop, the 116th promenade during the Holiday season all lit-up, Cafe Pertutti (food not great, but good get-together place).

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 7 December 2002 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought you were in college already! What the fuck do I know! Congrats, Ally.

Michael Bourke, Saturday, 7 December 2002 02:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations, Ally!

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Saturday, 7 December 2002 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

that place is a miserable hellhole, i warn you. well, for grad school at least. you undergrads probably have it good, what do i know.

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 7 December 2002 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

That's fantastic. Congratulations.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 7 December 2002 05:22 (twenty-three years ago)

They're all hellholes, geeta.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 7 December 2002 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

"So are we going to my friend's house near Bronxville or not? Dude, he's home from work today, he called in sick. We could watch Spongebob with his son then go to SLC."

Oh good lord. I leave ILx for a few hours and look what I miss. Next time Ally!!

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 7 December 2002 07:05 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the greatest thread I've ever read! The entire second half I was still picturing Tracer in the Missy Elliot video, which is apparently as hilarious as life gets.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 7 December 2002 07:25 (twenty-three years ago)

congrats Ally and good luck!

Whatever you do, stay the hell west of Amsterdam the block above 116th or you might wind up like me.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 7 December 2002 07:39 (twenty-three years ago)

they have the best blow down there - yr gonna have a blast. Say hola to Thalia for me while yuo're there.

Queen G (Queeng), Saturday, 7 December 2002 08:31 (twenty-three years ago)

congratulations!

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 7 December 2002 09:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatever you do, stay the hell west of Amersterday and 108 or you might end up like me.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 7 December 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Ally! Go Ally!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 7 December 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

eight months pass...
Just as an update, this was the most stupid ass thing I've done in years.

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

did you just get your marks for the semester?

kephm, Friday, 22 August 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No no, I'm doing quite well, it's just stupid.

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
Yesterday bnw took me behind the hallowed ranks and nooks and crannies and secret passageways of SLC, with a bonus Bronxville boutiques + pizza and ice cream segment. We need to have a FAP at the bar, what's it called again, it looked super cool. Sadly, the bookstore had just closed, preventing me from getting an SLC T-shirt. There were more males wandering around then I had anticipated, otherwise my SLC dreams remained intact.

Sarah Lawrence (Mary), Saturday, 22 November 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.slc.edu/media/support/slcdifference.jpg

SLC (Mary), Saturday, 22 November 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The bar, I just remember, is called the Spinning Wheel. Also, the campus was much more hilly than I had thought, and the Tudor architecture was a surprise as well.

XX/XY (Mary), Saturday, 22 November 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
So how come I have to send the University Housing Advisory two photographs of myself with my deposit to move into university housing? What in the world? What are they doing with these photographs? This vaguely frightens me. Note: I've already been accepted into the housing and the Dean of housing already met me so he knows what I look like anyway.

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they have a facebook thingy? Also they may have some type of student registry thing so that security knows what all of the students who live there look like.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

at least they didn't specify photographs of just your feet or something. that would be weird. mind you you could send that pic of you kicking out towards the TV.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

If you don't pay your rent, they fuck around with your likeness in Photoshop and post it on the internet for the pleasure of laughing nerds everywhere.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

And that differs from any other day on ILX how?

Do you need to be picture of you with your deposit? Like, huge charity check style?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha that's exactly what I should do. Write an enormous check for $400 and pose with it, with a huge grin on my face, stand in front of the Low Library and act like I'm presenting it to someone. That'd be like the best thing ever.

(Dan I don't know, it doesn't say why they'd need it--but if that is the case they already have my school ID photo scanned into their system?)

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I am totally gonna start using novelty sized cheques to pay for everything!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, just because something is scanned into one system doesn't mean other school departments can access it! FEAR THE BEAUROCRACY OF HIGHER EDUCATION.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

BUREAUCRACY!

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom you aren't allowed to make any suggestions in regards to Columbia University. You are banned.

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I'm talking about the secret cabal of Beau Gestes that runs American universities; keep up here.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE BUREAUCRACY BTW. I found out this week that apparently when the Federal Government approved me for an unsubsidized stafford loan and sent the funds to Columbia, they somehow "missed" the fact that ALL OF MY PAPERWORK states my birthdate as May 14, 1980 which makes me age-ineligible (because if you recall from the student loan/aid thread apparently being 23 does not make you an "adult" to the Dept. of Education and unsubsidized loans are now only for "adults"). So they finally catch this I guess but they're like, we need the money back in two weeks. Even though it was their mistake and they should've caught it ages ago and blah blah blah all of a sudden I've got to cough up $8000 IMMEDIATELY because they are the government and the government is always right and there is no grace period at all for this. And also my funding I was told I was getting for next sememster is now gone because it was also an unsubsidized stafford! So I am TOTALLY FUCKED and will be taking out a $30k loan from citibank rather shortly! Hooray for me!!!

god why am I doing this.

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I know this is realy late but congrats.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha thank you Julio, that actually brightened my mood significantly :)

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

is that a dependency issue? it's possible you could go to your aid administrator and ask them about changing your status to independent. probably you've thought about all that already. and when did unsubsidized loans become only for adults? i had one last year as a dependent.

ginny, Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(I totally missed mary's revival of this thread. I still await the Barnard tour promised me. I wonder if Princeton is worth visiting.)

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 14 December 2003 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

you're moving into the dorms?! i'm coming over every day, okay?

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 14 December 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
I would just like to add that today I got accepted in the George Washinton University Graduate School of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering's Information Security Management program. It sounds like fun, doesn't it?

Also I demanded and received a promotion with a 10% raise at work. Before I found out about the grad school thing.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit, I have to complete two calculus courses as part of my conditions of admission. Fuck me in the goat ass.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ewww that looks horrible.. and i've been doing equations like that all day.

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

e is your friend (the differential of e is e!)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

or 0..

if only I could multiply everything by 0.. i'd know the answer rightaway

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually it appears there are no available sections of those courses taught during hours I can actually attend, so this whole thing is a complete wash. Never mind, another sixty dollars down the drain.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I still got a promotion and a raise.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

which calculus courses?

congrats tom.

"George Washinton University Graduate School of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering's Information Security Management" is a mouthful though.

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 27 May 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

um, yay, right?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Well yeah, money in my pocket, word.
I'm gonna call the advisor they assigned to me tomorrow and see what she thinks of me having to take calculus (none of the courses in my current curriculum appear to have it as a prerequisite).

TOMBOT, Friday, 28 May 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

congratulations, Tom!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 28 May 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I can take another course on "Quantitative Methods in Engineering Management" which fulfills the requirement and fits my schedule and is only one semester!

I may even be able to take it concurrently with my first core curriculum course! We'll find out TOMORROW.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Woowoo! That sort of maths makes my head hurt! I salute you, sir!

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Rah for Tom and cash money. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU ROCK. 10% handily beats the measly 1.5% I got.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What, no GSPM/SPPPA/Elliott?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Does this mean Tom is becoming an even bigger geek?

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck that, I'M GOOD AT KOMPOOTUZZ, policy is for my friend at CDT

xpost how is that even possible, I already own every YMO album

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, so I did some consulting work for a shop launch about two weeks back and my client presented to their client early last week. Today I found out that most of the stuff I'd suggested was taken up and that the fashion house in question wants to start a contemporary art prize for video artists, possibly women video artists. Guess who gets to run this?

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

how many guesses do I get

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Shameless (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

V. nice indeed! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ROCK ON, STERLING!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Well done, Sterling! Since you've been away from school a bit you shouldn't suffer the burn out problem. Best of luck.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom, it's through the woman Steph put me in touch with, and Mr. Fashion House Owner probably thought on from the suggestions presented to him, because it really was his idea. We're also doing an installation by an Italian artist but that totally came from me. But today I shot back with 'I want a bloody essay on why he likes this stuff and what he collects or else it will look really poserish' so this billionaire has to do art appreciation reports BECAUSE I SAID SO. Fashion should support art the way they're always 'paying homage' to it, so I'm meeting strange old von Aschenbach-ish friend who runs Beck's Futures to get some how-tos.

The other thing is they want a dinner at the private restaurant on top of this:

http://www.guru.net.nz/albums/UK_London/021_the_gherkin.thumb.jpg

I'm about halfway to blagsville on this. Think I'll manage?

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

No, you will probably freak out and become a refugee, like me when I have to start buying textbooks again.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

that's eroticgherkin yo

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I got an A in calculus bitches, that's right, bitches, I got a 4.0 in the math world now, bitches, take that, 11 years of fucking it up in primary and secondary education and then BOOM WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT, OH YEAH, BITCHES.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally, does Tom shout in bed?

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

nice work tom old bean
in your honor I will kill
ten fatted calums

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

What will you use calculus for, Tom (serious question btw)?

Jesus Christ, Paraplegic (Mark C), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I knew calculus.

Tom's cool.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(wow, that came off sounding sarcastic and I really didn't mean it that way...)

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Not only does he shout CONSTANTLY but he is always stealing things I've made and claiming them as his own, like coffee and asparagus and THREADS.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

...he would make outrageous claims, like he invented the question mark. Sometimes, he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy - the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Spencer, have you ever seen the SNL skit about the man who was going up in front of the parole board, and they ask him what he's going to do when he gets out of jail and he bursts into the song, "I'm gonna get me a shotgun and kill all the whiteys I see"?? I've had that song in my head for two days!!!!

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I SING THAT SONG TO MYSELF ALL THE TIME.

It mentally mixes well with Eddie Murphy's "Kill the White People"!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

One of Garrett Morris' finest moments. I think It's on the 25th Anniversary special DVD.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

And the "Kill My Landlord" poem! (xpost)

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'M GONNA GET ME A WHITE WOMAN WHO'S WEARING A NAVY BLUE SWEATERRRRRR

xpost yeah it's on that dvd!! I haven't seen it but they showed it on tv. I have the Best of Christopher Walken one only.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, isn't he auditioning for the prison performance of Gigi?

J (Jay), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I often get that song stuck in my head.

Also: "K. I. L. My land...LORD!"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

http://snltranscripts.jt.org/75/pics/75klifer4.jpg

and yes, it was for a Gigi audition.

also, the song was possibly co-written by Dudley Moore!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Congratulations Tom!

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yay tom!

youn, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's better if he's announcing his post-jail intentions than it is if he's auditioning for a musical, maybe that is why I misremember it.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan! I cannot believe you forgot he did it like this: "Kill my landlord, kill my landlord, C-I-L-L."

Just saying. Congratulations, Tom - I'm a good standardised maths tester but I really hate the stuff to sit down and grapple with in calculus form. However I did explain to you that in order to get my head around every single literature and English elective I chose something called Informal Geometry. This was so fluffy it was taught by one of those football coaches who approaches the classroom like open mike night at a bad suburban comedy franchise called Chuckles! or summat. Logic of the scenario indicated that if the physical athletes could lighten their load and keep their GPA clean, then why couldn't Minnesota's answer to John Updike do the same as an intellectual athlete of sorts, or someone who was trying to be? That is what I was told to expect of myself at the time so I behaved accordingly because the news was good.

Watch this threadspace; will be back in a few days. All I can possibly say now is WHOA.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I cannot believe I forgot that, too! ARGH.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
Tomorrow I pick up my diploma! I will not be attending the actual ceremony, because I'm way too cool for that (read: I absolutely refuse to PURCHASE-as opposed to rent-that fucking get up they require you to wear).

Then me and my mom and dad are gonna get food and DRANKS and they're gonna help me figure out some things about moving!

Then I might have to accompany them to a funeral!

Wish me luck on spontaneously giving birth tomorrow as well, so that I can contain all possible life events in one single day!

Congratulations, Ally! I went to mine, but on crutches with a sprained ankle -- actually a pretty good metaphor for my academic career.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

Rah to the Ally! I can but attend in spirit. :-/ May there be merriment (erm, except for the funeral part).

Well done Ally. Just about finished up myself at this point. shit now I have to get a career.....!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

Nice one Ally!

I went to my graduation with a crippling hangover, having had three hours sleep. Not so shockingly I look crap in all the photos. My grandmother still has one on her wall in a prominent place, ignoring my pleas to take it down as I look like a pig in a mortar board.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I will "lynndie" my diploma and post pictures later.

Congratulations, Ally :)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Congratulations! Great diploma pics!

Maybe it's the lighting or the camera angle, but that doesn't look like a very colourful diploma. You'd think that Columbia would snazz the thing up after all that hard work. At least the seal should be a bit colourful.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

true story: at my law school graduating ceremony, the students who owed the school money for whatever or who owed books to the library had bills inserted w/ their diplomas!

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Surely they were lucky to get diplomas at all, Tad! I never actually got my undergrad diploma for like three years, due to a missing library book and a fine that didn't seem entirely worth paying once I'd already gotten a job. And come fall, Columbia won't be giving me anything unless I've caught up on some rent.

nabiscothingy (nory), Thursday, 19 May 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm extremely happy for you, Ally. I didn't go to my graduation either, mostly because I didn't want to deal with people saying shit like "how the fuck did YOU graduate? You were never here!"

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 19 May 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

I think I got up around 5:30 AM (after going to bed like 2 hours earlier) to convene in a dark room filled with secret society types and bottles of champagne to be passed out to the class. During the very hot, mostly boring, relatively short, but conspiratorially fun ceremony, I gazed up at Kofi Annan and Lauren Bacall.

I skipped the law school one.

(congrats Ally!)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and Ally, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR GRADUASHEEON!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

Congrats! There's a small chance that when I went to my backwoods Ivy graduation I, uh, cried and stuff. But that probably had a lot to do with the fact that I had to go to work but a few hours afterwards and had spent the entirety of the previous night sitting on the porch drinking beers with an enormous Shaved Bear.

(I bet you $5 I spelled 'entirety' wrong.)

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

(i think that i just gave ned ideas for how to handle deadbeat UC library patrons)

Very good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 May 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

OK seriously, giboyeux, the words "sitting on the porch drinking beers with an enormous shaved bear" are almost as good a graduation gift as the present I got. That is fantastic.

gabbneb, you were lucky if yr ceremony was short! The one today seemed endless, it definitely went significantly longer than it was supposed to, we ended up just saying fuck it and stopped waiting and just crashed the diploma handing out building and stole their booze. I mean good lord.

Best part though, was that it sounded rather significantly like the engineering students were chanting "FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU!" when they were mentioned. My dad is still holding out hope that they were actually chanting "FUCK YOU." Former engineer tough guy solidarity in da house?

Allyzay do not obtain to make download of yours MP3 (allyzay), Thursday, 19 May 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

WORST part: when realization happens that they misplaced my diploma but they know exactly where it is (?? Which doesn't really sound like "misplacing" but, uh, whatever), the woman was like, "Do you want us to go get it for you?"

NO, PLEASE, KEEP IT, IT IS MY GIFT TO YOU. YOU MAY HAVE MY IMMUNITIES.

actually, i re-thought what i posted and you are correct nabisco. i just love taking cheap shots at rutgers is all :-)

i was sorta the opposite of gabb -- skipped out on my undergrad grad ceremony, went to the law school one (but only b/c my parents wanted to go -- otherwise, i would've skipped that one too). i didn't go to the villanova grad ceremony b/c neither myself nor my parents wanted to schlepp down there.

Mary, that is wonderful news :)

The whole 9/11 + Class of 2005 nonsense is silly. I had no idea they were going on about that, I wasn't in the audience, I showed up a half hour before it was supposed to end and then loitered around buildings waiting to be able to get in and get my diploma.

The H-bomb is all Latined out, too. I actually have an A.B., not a B.A., which has made a couple of prospective employers say "I didn't think Harvard gave associate degrees???" That is usually the point where I get up and walk out of the interview.

Nothing impresses potential employers quite like correcting them on their Latin grammar / knowledge of accredited degrees!

I prefer having a diploma that is not in Latin. I think Latin would've frightened me, that it was secretly insulting me or something.

If it starts getting fresh, just toss this at it: Nemo me impune lacesset, BIATCH! And dangle it over the shredder.

My classy classicist friend led the tiny protest against the vernacularization of the Columbia diplomas a couple of years ago.

Congratulations but now I have one less person to hang out with uptown.
