ILX Hall Of Fame

Could we have an ILX Hall Of Fame page where threads with more than a certain number of answers get listed automatically? That would be kewl I think.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

How many answers?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that's the question.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

200?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it should be 175.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I second that!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this mean we are going to relabel the unanswered questions: the hall of shame?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

150?

I thought initially that this was gonna be some Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame type thing where we could send mark s now he's old n decrepit.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

But this will be a hall of fame containing the Bangbus, Ally's Ass, and the songs/tube stations. Can there not be a randomly selected panel who sift throuh the threads (ie press the random button ten times) to elect one classic discussion thread too?

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I sort of admire the unanswered questions.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ILX gets the hall of fame it deserves. Even the Vice thread.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

what's so good about long threads? It's not how big they are, it's what you do with them that counts.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I don't undertsand the logic. Long threads, more often than not, tend to be a cliquey, tedious list of one-word answers to private jokes. Not what I'd want in a hall of fame.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I tend not to look at threads that are over some arbitrary but not particularly high number.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

but people are bound to start adding tons of useless comments to their threads just to get them in the Hall Of Fame...perhaps particularly good threads could be judged and elevated manually? what do you mean you dont have time?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hall of Fame: none of Q's would get in, sob

the pinefox, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Or every month we could vote on a selection of threads. Seems a bit too much like work though.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

And shit!

four years pass...

I think it is time to set up an ILx Hall of Fame. Posters like Ed quite correctly note that ILX is more than it is now, it's the sum of its all-time contributions, and as a result within a week I will start the first thread that will induct members to the ILX Hall of Fame. Stay tuned!

Back in the 80s, baseball author and historian Bill
James was lobbied for support by the Committee to
Elect Ken Keltner to the Hall of Fame. The
documentation the organization put together in
support of Keltner was the usual superficial
analysis and lowest common denominator arguments
made in support of mediocre candidates. It caused
James to take some time to think about the various
things that can make up a Hall of Fame Candidacy.
What resulted is known as the Keltner List.

James' Keltner List is the following set of
questions:

1. Was he ever the best player in baseball?

2. Was he the best player on his team?

3. Was he the best player in baseball at his
position? Was he the best player in the league at
his position?

4. Did he have an impact on a number of pennant
races?

5. Was he good enough to continue to play past his
prime?

6. Is he the very best player in baseball history
who is not in the Hall of Fame?

7. Are most of the similar players in the Hall of
Fame?

8. Does the player's numbers meet the Hall of Fame
standards?

9. Is there any evidence to suggest the player was
significantly better or worse than his stats?

10. Is he the best player at his position that is
eligible for the Hall of Fame?

11. How many MVP type seasons did the player have?

12. How many all-star games did he play in?

13. If this were the best player on the team, could
you win a pennant?

14. What impact did the player have on history, new
rules, etc.?

15. Did he uphold the standards of sportsmanship and
character that we are instructed to consider?

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, it's clear the small boat is tugging the ship (you can see the line, and its direction is clear from the wake), but on first glance that dude's expression added to the picture and the caption is absolute comedy genius.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

no wait that isn't the line, that's a jet of water. it isn't tugging the ship, it's probably piloting it.

explaining why things are funny - dud or dud?

ailsa, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

Thus, questions to consider:

1. Were they ever the best poster on ILX?

2. Were they ever the best poster on their particular board?

3. Were they ever the best poster amongst their particular balkan state (watercooler, noize bored, IRE crew, shut-in aspie LBZC rubes)

4. Did they have an impact in a number of clusterfuck threads?

5. Were they good enough as a poster past their ILX prime?

6. Are they the very best ILX poster not currently in the ILX HoF?

7. Are most of the similar posters to them in the ILX HoF?

8. Does the poster's postcount qualify for HoF membership?

9. Is there any evidence to suggest the poster was
significantly better or worse than his contributions to threads indicate?

10. Are they the best posters from their balkan state that is
eligible for the Hall of Fame?

11. How many classic threads were they integral to?

12. How many great zings did they come up with?

13. If this were the best poster on a thread, could
it be a classic?

14. What impact did the player have on ILx history, new ideas, movements, changes to how the board operates?

15. Did he uphold the standards of sportsmanship or did they post pictures of someone else in their underwear before conning a bunch of dudes into falling in love with them?

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

explaining why things are funny - dud or dud?

I wasn't explaining why it was funny, I was explaining what was actually going on in the picture. Jordan, if you're being sarcastic, you've evidently never heard of or seen a 'tugboat'. Or flown in an airplane. Never wondered how those tiny trucks can drag a whole plane? When the movement is horizontal, far less force than you might think is necessary to induce movement. Men have pulled trains.

sorry Louis, look at the speed they're both going. No boat tugs a liner that size at that speed, that 'tugboat' is a tiny speedboat for a start.

Ste, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

or 'coast guard' type boat.

Ste, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

OK Let's answer on behalf of Mark G, a fairly mediocre candidate I trust you'll agree.

1. Were they ever the best poster on ILX? For about five minutes, for one post that took five minutes to read, prob.

2. Were they ever the best poster on their particular board? ILM, and no.

3. Were they ever the best poster amongst their particular balkan state (watercooler, noize bored, IRE crew, shut-in aspie LBZC rubes) gordeblimey no

4. Did they have an impact in a number of clusterfuck threads? Only the one thread would I say "That one had an impact" but if you mean "on purpose", then no.

5. Were they good enough as a poster past their ILX prime? Here I am baby, come taste my mind!

6. Are they the very best ILX poster not currently in the ILX HoF?No, as no one is in it, right?

7. Are most of the similar posters to them in the ILX HoF?See above

8. Does the poster's postcount qualify for HoF membership? Now you're talking!

9. Is there any evidence to suggest the poster was
significantly better or worse than his contributions to threads indicate?Yes.

10. Are they the best posters from their balkan state that is
eligible for the Hall of Fame? You asked this already

11. How many classic threads were they integral to?Oh, one or two, one or two

12. How many great zings did they come up with?Zings are in the eye of those who are not the beholders. I killed "Nutty Nigel" if that counts.

13. If this were the best poster on a thread, could
it be a classic? You know it

14. What impact did the player have on ILx history, new ideas, movements, changes to how the board operates?Don't know. For others to decide

15. Did he uphold the standards of sportsmanship or did they post pictures of someone else in their underwear before conning a bunch of dudes into falling in love with them?1) I've stood up for some folk being picked on, sometimes correctly, sometimes not. 2)I am what I is.

16. Are you thurrrr SPACE BOSSS!!!???? No

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

well i did say it isn't tugging the ship, it's probably piloting it!

Just got offed, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

actually, revise

2) I don't have any pictures of someone else in my underwear.

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 10:14 (eighteen years ago)

Nope, these questions aren't how voters vote. I suggest the following instead:

1. Were they fit?

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

It does raise the question of whether guys like Wrinklepaws are eligible. I say no, because of the low postcount, but these are the issues we'll need to debate in HoF voting week.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 10:32 (eighteen years ago)

Wrinklepaws hasn't rilly served his dues. What about T✧✧@K✧✧.e✧✧ tho?

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

I think... I think there will be 15 nominees for induction for the first ILX Hall of Fame. Threads for each candidate will be set up in I Don't Mind Everything or Aeon Flux. We'll debate each one for a week, then open up voting for a week. 60% gives you qualification. Under 25% and you fall off the ballot next year.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

The only posters I could think of voting for are estela and Raggett. Everyone else is crap, whiny and/or English.

Also, KBP, that Lex thread got deleted before you let the world know how you're taking the suicide of a C+B poster.

Maybe that's why it got deleted.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 10:58 (eighteen years ago)

Wotcha, just a quick one to catch up on the sparse Morris news, and more importantly, to extoll the virtues of a new and actually funny British comedy show! Thursdays, BBC2, yes that's right, just before "The YouTube Mike Yarwood Show", and his perfectly passable new comedy is the new Jennifer Saunders sitcom. And it's bloody great. Course, I've only seen the first episode so far, and maybe it will go careering wildly off the rails from here on in, but I just HAD to prostelytize, as a) I haven't been as excited by a new British comedy for beards, and b) it's that damn Serafinowossname who's unfairly commandeering all the attention in Comedy Chat.
