A film that everyone likes and everyone's seen

I recall ILM had a few threads some time ago along such lines regarding bands/music. Do you think we can find a common film we all unreservedly like/enjoy? It's likely to be classic, which (I imagine) is not what happened on the ILM music versions, so I'll start by suggesting...

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Jaws

(FWIW I don't like many Scorsese films. Godfather films bore the hell outta me)

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't seen it. Seen parts, though.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Seconded

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Jaws gets blown out of the water for launching the blockbuster career of Spielberg.

My choice would be 'Singin' in the Rain'. But knowing ILx, I think this stands a better chance of finding a consensus.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

whoops, what is up with muh html today? I meant this

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Before, we all agreed on Three Kings. Any naysayers (Ptee had his reservations but still liked it).

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything with a character named "Captain Kronik" works for me.

(Haven't seen "Singin' in the Rain" either. Or "Three Kings.")

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

It's getting that classic that everyone has actually seen. I doubt anyone dislikes the Philadelphia Story (for example, though come on you hataz, out with it now!) but I'm always surprised how few people see such films.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Never seen Willy Wonka. I like all the others mentioned so far, though I'm not really mad about Jaws.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

(we're going to need a bigger thread)

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Galacy of the Dinosaurs. I can pretend I've seen it, or heard of it before, if that will help?

Willy Wonka and Three Kings I'll except.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never seen Three Kings, or the Philadelphia Story.

It's probably quite tricky to find a film that everyone's seen, let alone likes. The closest I can think of is probably the Wizard of Oz, or maybe Star Wars, but I'm sure there are loads of people who'd happily shoot down both.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

overexposed to Wonka fetishization personally (I live in Athens); I'd say Valley of the Gwangi (cowboys + dinosaurs = unbeatable combo), but I don't think everyone's seen it. Assault on Precinct 13 or Halloween maybe (there's a definite love for John Carpenter on ILx).

Kelly's Heroes over Three Kings.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

People like Tom and Ned have seen no films except Star Wars and will ruin this thread.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I am such a film philistine. I haven't seen Three Kings, Singing in the Rain, Philadelphia Story or even Galaxy of the Dinosaurs....

Surely everyone has seen and likes It's a Wonderful Life?

Not my all time fave or anything just the only widely liked film I could think of.

smee (smee), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Repo Man!

I also have seen no films, including Jaws and 3 Kings.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned should go see Singing in the Rain. I never saw Three Kings either. What about Citizen Kane? I mean, if someone sez "I don't like it" then I'll be forced to cry.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Oz, Jaws, Kings, Wonderful Life, probably would like Singin In The Rain, and while I don't like Star Wars any more I thought it was good when I saw it as a kid. I'm a safe bet for most non-18-rated classix actually.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd happily shoot down both. I think my Three Kings naysaying was merely because its my least favourite David O.Russell film.

Speaking of that, what is D.O.R. up to these days? Has he got a film coming out soon?

I love Jaws but its already been shot down.
For a safe universally liked film I would look towards maybe Toy Story to be fair.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

People like Tom and Ned have seen no films except Star Wars and will ruin this thread.

Not true. I've seen The Lord of The Rings. Beyond that, what are these 'films' you speak of?

Haven't seen "Toy Story" -- do love "Citizen Kane" though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Kane and Repo and Toy Story too! This image of me as a film-hating curmudgeon must go!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, "Repo Man" is grand. Let's have that as the choice.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Wot of PSYCHO? Everyone I know has seen that!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

How about Casablanca?

Three Kings to me is a pub rather than a film, but I'd definitely second 'Singing in the rain'.

Hang on, tons more replies. Also second Repo Man, Toy Story, Citizen Kane (but surely that's too obvious a choice).

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I like IAWL. But I bet some people haven't seen it.

I think this is easier than the song one if we don't include the 'all must have seen' condition and harder if we do.

There's always *someone* who's not seen a film (except possibly Star Wars). Perhaps a compromise is to find a film that no one objects to and then check that there are a reasonable (20?) number of people on ILE who have seen it.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Royal Tenenbaums?

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

They would not let me see any of these films so I cannot comment(apologies for lame in joke).

Emma, Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I vote this thread most fruitless endeavour of the day!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen the end of "Psycho." Not sure how that happened! I do have "Royal Tenenbaums" on DVD, now I should actually get around to watching it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Never seen Psycho, Casablanca, saw half of Tenembaums and didn't like it.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I have not seen Casablanca. I keep almost seeing it though.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Since I have seen "Casablanca," N. can no longer make fun. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't seen Repo Man, Casablanca or Citizen Cane either....

I'll vote for Toy Story though, it's pretty inoffensive

smee (smee), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Blame it on the Exorcist?

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only seen Toy Story 2!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean, not of all films ever.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

An exorcist prevented N from seeing Casablanca???

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm amazed so many people haven't seen Casablanca. It's on the telly about three times a year.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Never seen "Casablanca", "Psycho", "Three Kings", "Jaws", "Citizen Kane" or "Galaxy of the Dinosaurs".

"Bambi"?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Some Like It Hot

Have not seen: Star Wars, Repo Man, Psycho, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Wizrad of Oz, Singing in the Rain.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I kept telling him I was fine but he was very pushy.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I think we (other we) decided once that Fight Club was the film of our generation. But surely this thread is only treading water until it finds out what films the pinefox (he's a man! who lives in a hole!) has seen.

Mary Poppins?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think Ned's seen "Some Like It Hot" (which is a total CLASSIC).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't watch many films on TV James. I'm waiting for broadband.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not seen Exorcist, Bambi.

Like Poppins, Hot.

Don't like F Club.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm amazed that anyone has managed to go through twenty something Christmases on this planet without seeing the Wizard of Oz.

I'm going to shoot down Mary Poppins.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

The PF has seen a surprising number of films.

I think it must be: GROUNDHOG DAY.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Groundhog Day.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Or alternatively, GHOSTBUSTERS.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

(This confirms my theory of the filmic infallibility of Bill Murray)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i wish the answer was Tampopo but i doubt it

Honda (Honda), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i dissent, due to Andie McDowell's overweening screen time

The Princess Bride, and

Raising Arizona

i so win!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

From Justin to Kelly?

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Raiders of the Lost Ark? (Actually probably not - I think the only ever actual fight at a party I gave was over this film)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think Ned's seen "Some Like It Hot" (which is a total CLASSIC).

Actually, I have seen that, but many many years ago.

Haven't seen "Groundhog Day."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I defy anyone to say anything negative about Raising Arizona.

*Everyone* must have seen at least one Indiana Jones film.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Groundhog Day but only the other day I was speaking to someone who had not seen it and I fear this condition is, if not rife, then at least not something that should be brushed under the carpet.

Ghostbusters is also a good call.

Also: Back to the Future.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I genuinely don't like Raising Arizona much. I found it a big disappointment. Sorry.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, this being a site full of music fans, what about This Is Spinal Tap?

Everyone in the whole world has seen ET and Superman and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and the Jungle Book, surely? Even blind people.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

As I have said many times before on these forums: the smug and condescending Coen Brothers are the Ween of the film-making world. 'Raising Arizona' is one of my least favourite films

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Ghostbusters, Arizona, Future, Tap, Superman.

Hate ET

Never seen Snow White.

Fantasia??

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I defy anyone to say anything negative about Raising Arizona.

Haven't seen that. Or "Back to the Future."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Another second for Groundhog Day. (Quick Change is even better but it's prob too obscure for this thread.)

Snow White was the first film I ever saw at the cinema. Which is now a Kwik Save.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Of the Disney's, I think 'The Jungle Book' is the rocking-est.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i really didnt like kane, and i worship welles.

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I am not altogether anti-Coen brothers. I liked The Big Lebowski a lot because it was funny. Also, The Man Who Wasn't There because it wasn't. And I laugh and laugh at RJG and Ally C's rendition of the recurring 'for kids' motif in 'The Hudsucker Proxy'.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Some Like It Hot is ace.
what about the apartment

anthony (anthony), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread is going to be a nightmare to sort out. How about if we come up with a shortlist from all these and then vote on it?

And there has to be a Disney on it. Jerry is right - should be Jungle Book (or Toy Story).

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Spinal Tap sucks.

The Lion King?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't seen Some Like It Hot or It's A Wonderful Life or Citizen Kane. Sorry.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Or the Lion King, for that matter.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

The Coen Brothers are allowed to be condescending anyway because they are cleverer than us.

Shortlist??

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Lukewarm on Jungle Book.

Not seen Apartment, Lion King.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there any way we can make Graham watch Star Wars over the next few days?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

There must be someone here who hates Star Wars though.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Goldfinger?
Alien(s)?
Brief Encounter?
Blade Runner?
A Matter Of Life And Death?
Vertigo?
Pulp Fiction?

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i love some like it hot, can those who haven't seen it please do so?

minna (minna), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Loads of people hate Star Wars!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The Apartment and Groundhog Day must def. be on the shortlist.

I veto all Indiana Jones films - everything else mentioned thus far is at least OK tho'

Jeff W, Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Everybody loves Breakfast at Tiffany's don't they?

Simeon (Simeon), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

How about as a shortlist:

Toy Story
Star Wars
Some Like it Hot
Repo Man
Singing in the rain
It's a wonderful life
Groundhog Day

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Like Goldfinger, Blade Runner (only with voiceover though), Matter of Life/Death (which I really want to see again)

Never seen the others Ben mentioned or B at T's.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I like almost all the films we've mentioned so far, except ET and The Lion King.

I find it hard to imagine that someone wouldn't like Some Like It Hot. If we can just get everyone who hasn't seen it to rent it we might have a winner here. The Apartment is great too, but no one's heard of that one these days.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Describe the Apartment to me and I'll decide if I like it or not.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

'sunset boulevard' but I'm sure someone won't have seen it (but here's hoping)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Snow White & the Seven Dwaves?
A Christmas Story?
Logan's Run?
Godfather Part II?

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I couldn't find my copy of Maltin's book, so I'll give you Jonathan Rosenbaum's review instead:

"I wouldn't call this 1960 picture one of Billy Wilder's best comedies--it's drab, sappy, and overlong at 125 minutes. But its numerous Oscars--for best picture, direction, script, editing, and art direction--indicate that many disagree with me (including the Coen brothers, who seem to have studied it for The Hudsucker Proxy, just as Wilder studied Vidor's silent The Crowd for this). Jack Lemmon at his most hyperventilated plays an ambitious clerk who tries to get ahead by lending his apartment to executives for one-night stands, then falls in love with an elevator operator (Shirley MacLaine) who's being mistreated by his boss (Fred MacMurray). Wilder cohort I.A.L. Diamond collaborated on the script of this black-and-white 'Scope movie; with Ray Walston and Edie Adams."

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh OK I like that Justyn, sounds good.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there anyone who disliked Fellowship?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing can make me watch Star Wars, not even it being on TV and there being nowt else on and me being very bored.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham you'd wuv it.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't seen Repo Man, Toy Story 1, The Jungle Book or The Lion King (is the latter really that highly admired?)

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I vote No on the Lion King.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

How about Seven Samurai?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Never seen it.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I know I would Tom.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked everything about The Apartment except Lemmon's overanxious puppy schtick: too much "Gil" from the Simpsons.

Why is everyone avoiding the Princess Bride?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. You love it, this thread ends.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I second (or whatever numbered) willy wonka, toy story (as i recall), raising arizona, groundhog day, alien, prolly some like it hot, GF p.2. haven't seen many of the others, except star wars which is rubbish. i'd suggest The Conversation, nobody can dislike isolationist dramas.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

chitty chitty bang bang is the best bond movie!!

willy wonka can fuck off, along w.the memory of my esteemed relatived

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

never seen the conversation.

Willy Wonka is rub.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there anyone who's seen "Bambi" who disliked it? Imagine the "Bambi"/"Some Like It Hot" double-feature!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The Maltese Falcon
North By Northwest
Big Trouble In Little China
The Goonies

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Doh! The Princess Bride = we have a winner?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw bambi once about ten yrs ago. really tedious at the time, prolly find it less so now, or maybe not.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Dan, it made me cry when I was really little because the parents died. I remember hating it almost as much as I hated Land Before Time. Toy Story was bad too, but not for parent death, just because there wasn't anything good about it.

I second the Princess Bride.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

"INCONCEIVABLE!" - I dated his cousin-in-law when I was in high school.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Princess Bride is cool by me

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Princess Diaries anyone?

Not seen Princess Bride.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Watership Down

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Note to Dan— did she look like him?

How about The Seven Year Itch?

Can't stand Wizard of Oz— nothing’s resolved from the initial set-up— Toto’s still set to be destroyed in the morning, and that makes it a total bummer for me.

Sigmund Freud (SiggyBaby), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Never saw Princess Bride either. Don't particularly care for any Marilyn Monroe movie. The oompah loompahs are irritating little shits.

What about;
American werewolf in London
The Producers.
Midnight Cowboy.
Arsenic and old lace.
Ladykillers.
To be or not to be (Ernst Lubitsch version).

Maria is mad, nothing good about Toy Story!!!

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i can go for midnight cowboy

anthony (anthony), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Gregory's Girl

Tag, Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ferris Bueller's Day Off!

Okay, yeah Princess Bride, or the Nightmare Before Christmas

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Princess Bride=evil

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

what about deep throat ?

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I just say - and I know they are gone, but - I hate Repo Man, Some Like It Hot and Citizen Kane.

'Second' Princess Bride (though that's gone now), Ferris Bueller and Blade Runner (with voiceover)(I almost sold my v/o copy of BR on a car boot sale. Glad I didn't now, it's being written out of history by this new fangled, so-called 'Directors Cut'. Cah)

err...

Wicker Man?
Rushmore?
The Thing?
Sat Night Fever?

DavidM (DavidM), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

the Nightmare Before Christmas

You know, one day I WILL finally see more than ten minutes of this at a stretch.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Mad Max

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anything not been shot down? After all, on the terms of the question, voting is irrelevant, but anyone can veto.

One extra suggestion: Bringing Up Baby.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

no one has commented on Bill and Ted, so it's a clear winner.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, haven't seen B&T

Would it be faster to do film/man/woman that everyone has seen and NO ONE can stand? Or is that too ILM?

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Everybody loves Breakfast at Tiffany's don't they?

I think I remember the film, and as I recall I think we all kinda liked it.

Well that's one thing we've got.

Alan (Alan), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Blue Velvet.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't like Blue Velvet.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Princess Diaries anyone?

Not seen Princess Bride.

There is something deeply and profoundly wrong with you.

I'm just saying.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom - something in me has just died.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I hated Blue Velvet.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

but then for disclosure's sake i should probably point out I hate 99% of films

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

in a better world, Together.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 24 January 2003 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't seen Breakfast At Tiffany's.

Is there anyone but Felicity who hasn't seen or doesn't like Bill & Ted?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 24 January 2003 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm down with B&T.

not seen brekkie at tiff's.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 24 January 2003 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

B&T is, indeed, excellent.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to like it. I like Keanu. I'll try to watch it this weekend, just for N.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

It's clear that to resolve this, Jim has to list the 1% of films he has enjoyed and then choose from this.

N. & G and Tom - you really don't know what you're missing. Breakfast at Tiffany's is a thing of beauty from beginning to end. I can lend you the tape if you want. Mail me.

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Excellent Adventure: classic
Bogus Journey: Not so good

Hey! Wayne's World!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved Bogus Journey too. WW is rubadub, though I haven't exactly seen it.

I used to want to see Breakfast at Tiffany's but then I heard the theme tune on Top of the Pops and I was put off.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Nickie bought it as part of my Birthday Box Set, remember? You can watch it next time you're over.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Wayne's World has been a terrible influence on impressionable twats => it is GRATE ART.

The Wrong Trousers? Surely no-one who's seen it could hate it?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

anthony don't you beweeve in twue wuv??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

wrong trousers is a sackful of smug sardine scrapings.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 24 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Marcello, do you hate fun?

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes I do actually; it's the most overrated quality of human existence. We need a ten-year moratorium on "fun."

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 24 January 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

*scratches Marcello's name off invite list to duckpin bowling party*

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Airplane was funny though.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 24 January 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll second The Princess Bridge and Watership Down.

I don't like any of those old boring Hollywood films.

Genevieve, Friday, 24 January 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops, BRIDE not Bridge!!

Genevieve, Friday, 24 January 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

watership down is wet, british and torily hypocritical. can't abide pisses bromide.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 24 January 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

But where do you stand on Bill & Ted, Marcello? It's the only one that hasn't been vetoed, I think.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 24 January 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

no great opinion on either of the B&Ts. ok for their time i guess but i couldn't exactly say i ever actually "liked" them.

Airplane, then, unless someone says different.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 24 January 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

not airplane.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 24 January 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Never seen "Airplane".

Harold & Maude?
Mannequin?

Genevieve, Friday, 24 January 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Princess Bride seems to be a good choice. There's probably also some Disney movie we can add - Great Mouse Detective maybe? I remember a lot of people liking that.

Citizen Kane and Bambi are extremely dull.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Airplane II better than Airplane.

The Princess Bride has been violently rejected by Anthony and many of us have not seen it.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude Where's My Car?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Star Trek: the motion picture

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

but then DWMC is just a dumbed down version of B&T for the MTV generation! ha! B&T is very high minded and idealistic, it's based on the works of Spinoza.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I have not seen Dude Where's My Car but I assume it is amazing.

I thought the first Star Trek film was supposed to be a bit dull?

Has anyone not seen Superman II? I assume that everyone loves that.

Gregory's Girl has not been vetoed I don't think but I guess a few people haven't seen it.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Superman II is the one with the evil super powered dudes? It's great!

DWMC is very good, you should see it.

Teenwolf?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Saturday Night Fever it is then.

DavidM (DavidM), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

The Lost Boys?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't seen Saturday Night Fever or The Lost Boys and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like either as I hate fun *and* goths.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I really thought I would like Dude, Where's My Car?, but it was awful. I expected something in the style of Dumb and Dumber, but it was more of a non-joke movie where the characters just act stupidly.

I've not seen Star Trek I but it's supposed to be one of the worst in the series. Star Trek II is considered by many to be the best.

Lost Boys I can definitely agree with though!

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

the goths get killed in the lost boys.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Wrath of Kahn is pretty good.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

How about Beetlejuice? Does anyone dislike that? (And if so, bah)

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't seen it but again I fear the blackness. I don't dig Tim Burton except for Ed Wood, obv.

ED WOOD!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

If Superman II is the one with the cast of Hotel in drag - I love it.

N - you love dancing. Saturday Night Fever would have you twitching. And the little man with the big talent storyline would *kill* you.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I think both Star Trek and Superman II are great.

Mad Max 2?
The Italian Job?

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I imagine I'll be slaughtered for this but *quietly* Annie Hall?

Lara (Lara), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Annie Hall, Lara, but I prefer Manhattan and Sleeper.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Is everyone OK with Superman II and Ed Wood?

I fear there are a few Allen-haters who will veto Annie Hall. I think I might prefer Manhatten too but I'd have to see them again.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Silence Of The Lambs
This Is Spinal Tap
Monty Python & The Life Of Brian

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never seen Silence of the Lambs and I don't want to - Hopkins looks like the biggest ham ever in it.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Liver. Chianti. Fava Beans.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Plan 9 From Outer Space?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Ben Mott is OTM with Spinal Tap.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt DC already suggested Spinal Tap and Graham said 'it sucked'.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely everyone must like "Hairspray".

Tag, Friday, 24 January 2003 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't seen Ed Wood or any Superman movies.

I don't think it's reasonable to veto Annie Hall because you don't think it's as good as other Woody Allen movies. (But Manhattan? Are you mental?)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Together is gd.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

1)Lara is now my new God.

2)I'm not so hot on Bill & Ted. Star Trek: The Motion Picture is almost as dull as Star Wars.

3)I do not understand how Spinal Tap can 'suck'.

4)I am imagining Tim Hopkins currently as a giant ham.

Ally C (Ally C), Saturday, 25 January 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to think that VH1's documentaries will help others understand the glory that is This Is Spinal Tap.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 25 January 2003 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

How about Fast Timesa at Ridgemont High, Taxi Driver,Waiting for Guffman, or Amateur?

Micheline Gros-Jean (Micheline), Saturday, 25 January 2003 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

a police academy film.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 25 January 2003 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Heathers?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 25 January 2003 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

In A Lonely Place is on Brit TV on Monday afternoon. You should all watch that, then we might be able to agree.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 25 January 2003 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok, discarding the stuff that's been vetoed, the stuff *I* haven't seen, and the stuff I hate (Tim Burton, Police Academy) here's the list so far:

Ghostbusters
Superman
Fantasia
Pulp Fiction
The Apartment (if Tom continues his "haven't seen but it's good" stance)
Fellowship Of The Ring (pro'lly cos no one bothered to shoot it down)
The Maltese Falcon(
American Werewolf In London
Ferris Bueler's Day Off
Wayne's World
Great Mouse Detective
Ed Wood
Life Of Brian
Hairspray
Taxi Driver

All of these are great choices IMO.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 25 January 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll shoot down Fellowship Of The Ring and Great Mouse Detective since I've not seen either.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 25 January 2003 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

LOTR is poop n' vetoed.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 25 January 2003 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

haven't seen anyting on d's list cept ghostbusters (can't remember if i like it), LOTR (c abuv), wayne's world (gd enuff) + taxi driver(think i mite like it )

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 25 January 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

From Daniels list I can say Ghostbusters, Fellowship of the Ring, and Ferris Buellers day off. All the others I either didn't like or haven't seen. I've never even heard of The Apartment.

Celeste (Celeste), Saturday, 25 January 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Withnail & I?

Celeste (Celeste), Saturday, 25 January 2003 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I am very keen to shoot down Withnail And I.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 25 January 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Shucks

Celeste (Celeste), Saturday, 25 January 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

i am stomping on withnail and i's shot-down carcass in a scary frenzy

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 25 January 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

While I'm at it, I'll veto with extreme prejudice anything else with Richard E Grant in it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 25 January 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I dislike Withnail & I also.

How about:

The Long Good Friday
Chinatown
Dr. Strangelove

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 25 January 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

even spice world martin? that is harsh!!

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 25 January 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Ferris Bueller vetoed! God, how did that get on the shortlist?

Jeff W, Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't think anyone has said anything bad abt 'sunset boulevard'. no one said they didn't watch this, either.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't see it, Julio.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i really want a 478 word analysis 4 dis Richard E Grant hatred from yaw haterz.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't c SB neither.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

The first Bill and Ted is surely a classic, makes me laugh everytime I see it.I think George Carlin(Rufus)is totally cool!Bogus Journey was still a good movie, but it looked too much like a big-budget Hollywood production, unlike the first.William Sadler played a brilliant Grim Reaper, though!
Ghostbusters.1 and 2.They had Dan Ackroyd and Bill Murray in them.Superb!
My all time favorite has to be the Blues Brothers.I can watch it again and again, and it never loses its appeal. The list of celebs who make appearances is something that many of todays films would struggle to compete with. The music is incredible, the car chases are unreal, and the characters played by Ackroyd and Belushi become unforgettable from the moment they are on screen.Just DON'T talk to me about Blues Brothers 2000.Dogshit.

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

damn!

OK now surely fritz lang's 'metropolis' (just kidding!)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know how anyone could defend Grant with his appalling Argos ads currently running. (On the subject of movie people in terrible ads, does anyone else enjoy imagining that Michael Winner directed his car insurance ads?)

If I were to make a Grant exception, it probably would be Spice World, but I think I'll veto that too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, the Argos ads r bad. I just get defensive due to How To Get Ahead In Advertising being by far the greatest movie ever made. (funny that someone cd play that role and then do argos ads(admittedly over a decade later) even if it was just acting.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually sorta on topic: is Paul Mcgann still alive? A religion teacher of my friend's was showin the class Withnail & I and at the end said, "That was a very funny movie, but in real life Paul Mcgann died due to alcoholism and Richard E Grant had a big problem wit drink." Also, isn't Grant allergic to alcohol?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

religion makes people lie.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 25 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul McGann is still alive.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 25 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I veto people vetoing the Argos ads.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 25 January 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul McGann is Lieutenant Bush in Hornblower.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 25 January 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

and he was in ILX fave "Queen of the Damned". (never seen it)

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 25 January 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Play Misty For Me?

All About Eve?

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 25 January 2003 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeh, i was almost certain he was still alive. didn't no he woz in QOTD.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 25 January 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I second "Chinatown."

And instead of "The Producers," I submit "Young Frankenstein."

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 25 January 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

And I second Young Frankenstein - brilliant.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 25 January 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Richard E Grant is allergic to alcohol, but the director took him out before filming and got him pissed. The lighter fluid was vinegar, they used water in rehearsals but didn't tell him it had been changed. The puking noises were real.

Has The Goonies or Willow been mentioned yet?

Celeste (Celeste), Saturday, 25 January 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul Verhoeven's The Fourth Man

erik, Saturday, 25 January 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Can anyone tell me what's actually good about Withnail And I?

Ally C (Ally C), Sunday, 26 January 2003 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

It's sad.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 26 January 2003 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

it has bits that are funny and it's sad.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 26 January 2003 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it gave a start to someone who later went on to the infinitely superior queen of the damned

The African Queen?

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Sunday, 26 January 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The Italian Job(Michael Caine and car chases-Brill!)

And I hope everyone has seen Tremors.

Essex Boys is poular round these parts,I guess it's because it's based on a true event that happened in our county, and a lot of people knew the blokes it was supposedly based on.If you haven't seen it,I reccomend that you do.

And I will second whoever nominated Mad Max.Mel Gibson in a Ford Falcon V8 Interceptor!

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Sunday, 26 January 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

the italian job = vetoed

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 26 January 2003 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i can't be arsed reading thiz hole thredd but shoorly no-ne dizlikes seven samurai? dersu uzala is even betteh.

michael wells (michael w.), Sunday, 26 January 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Although this is undoubtedly a triumph and probably Japan's most famous international release, it is both an ACTION and a FOREIGN film. And they never win.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 January 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Already not seen by some (a shame, as it's my favourite, though I wasn't fool enough to nominate it). I think Tremors has already been vetoed too, possibly by Jeff.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I hated Tremors and also Pulp Fiction (which I actually really liked up until a certain point when I begged Bruce not to go back and open the door and he did and for some reason that just ruined it for me).

luna (luna.c), Monday, 27 January 2003 08:24 (twenty-three years ago)

out of the films mentioned i agree with ed wood and life of brian but would veto all the others (incl. star trek passim, woody allen passim, seven samurai/kurosawa passim, spinal tap). also agree with chinatown. taxi driver? i loved it when i was 16. not so sure abt it or scorsese passim now.

i would say celine and julie go boating but am convinced that NO ONE else here (except perhaps mark and martin) has seen it.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 27 January 2003 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I veto Life of Brian. Taxi Driver is the only Scorsese film I would let through I think - like Marcello though, loved it when I was 16. Yes to Chinatown. Not seen Ed Wood.

The Argos ads are good!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 27 January 2003 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

(I liked both the other Python films btw if anyone wants to nominate those.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 27 January 2003 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom: King of Comedy easily beats Taxi Driver's lame-o ass

Alan (Alan), Monday, 27 January 2003 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

ok, what about holy grail then?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 27 January 2003 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i love that tremors is the most discussed candidate!
(the secret plan of the bbc to turn it canonical by showing it every other week is working just fine)

mean streets is still scorsese's best movie by far ("the rest is bullshit and you know it!")

mark s (mark s), Monday, 27 January 2003 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

not by me, Martin! Tremors = brill

Jeff W, Monday, 27 January 2003 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen Celine and Julie go Boating (a long time ago).

I thought Chinatown was (what for it) overrated.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I too have seen C&JGB and it is bonkas!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 January 2003 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Sir Henry at Rawlinson End. Surely everyone's seen that

Alan (Alan), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Have we mentioned 'Rita, Sue and Bob too'?

No? Probably for the best.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Predator 2!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

mean streets and tremor - no. predator of any number - nope. rita sue and bob too - didn't mind it. ditto sir henry.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 27 January 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

slapshot, but not slapshot 2.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 27 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

does anyone hate caddyshack?

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 27 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

You're right that I've seen C&JGB, and I like it. Andrew L does too. It doesn't get us anywhere though.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Withnail & I?
This is one of those movies that my bf and I got to watch together and part of the way through I totally gave up and went to the other room to play computer games.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Me too Sarah. I kept hearing about this movie and then one day it was on television...oh well, maybe I should've watched till the end.

Genevieve, Monday, 27 January 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

It doesn't get any better, I regret to say.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 27 January 2003 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I third the "loved it when I was 16" aspect of Taxi Driver, though I think I'd still defend it over Raging Bull (which I think is boring) or GoodFellas (good, but...okay, I can't figure out how to finish that sentence, so I'll just leave it at 'good'). It's been a while since I saw Mean Streets, I don't remember much.

Holy Grail is like, beyond criticism. I mean, there's probably a lot of things wrong with it, but they're impossible to see clearly if you've seen it 12,006 times like most people I know. Is the ending lame or brilliant? Who knows?

Revive!

Everyone surely likes:
Matrix?
Princess Mononoke?

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 16 February 2003 01:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't seen Princess Mononoke. Really, this thread is hopeless. We couldn't find a film that everyone had seen.

How about a commercial that everyone's seen and everyone likes?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 16 February 2003 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Or we could just invoke the concept of the 'unreasonable veto' for people who haven't seen Star Wars.

Showgirls, surely?

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 16 February 2003 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't seen The Matrix, but a friend considers it the worst movie ever made. I have seen Star Wars, and don't like it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 16 February 2003 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I hated Monotonousoke. Dud. Spirited Away was cool though. 7 out of 11

I am fine with the Matrix
