read a lot of old threads to find out abt this place and the ppl here and the general tone of discussions.
and finally: lurk for a bit.
I was in ILM for at least a year before i started posting but it took a while. I did read loads of old threads (mainly on film/books and the sex/relationships threads) and it did take me a while to 'feel part of it'.

Apart from that... be flexible, be willing to learn, be willing to play, do not take everything said on this board at face value, and most of all, remember that we are discussing OPINIONS - it is OK to insult the opinion, it is not OK to insult the poster holding said opinion. Show other posters the respect you would wish to receive yourself.

Please, if you can, do not use obscene language in the subject line of your thread. Also, if your thread will contain questionable image files, please put an alert to that effect in the subject line. To be fair, most people do this.

""[I]ncludes (among several things) using music to engage the reader in a dance, using music to express myself, writing about music in order to rock, telling stories, telling jokes, using music to challenge people's modes of thought, using music to raise questions about social relations, using music to challenge people's ideas of what's important and unimportant, writing critically about events in the world (e.g. musical events), showing off my hairstyle, showing off my gang affiliations, writing coded comments to make people fall in love with me, creating literature, creating new social categories, etc. etc."
Which is how I view ilx, a little.

Remember that 'a lot' is two words.
Do not try to pick up ILXOR-speak in order to fit in. Languages only evolve by immigrants saying 'this language sucks, let's slash the seats',
Don't complain that everyone is cliquey and unfriendly. Even if it's true it will make everyone hate you even more.
If you don't get a joke, it's probably not funny.
Remember that a lot of things are only on here because everyone is assuming that someone else must like them.
Don't make too many threads just for the sake of it. No one knows how many too many is.
Less 'meta' is betta.
Bring a little bit of analingus to everything you do.

Which isn't to say that chatrooms don't pose dangers. I know from my own experience that if someone is trying to pick a fight, and I find myself intervening more than once supposedly to try and talk the guy down, then something inside me is looking for a fight too, and I've got to back off and look at my own problems. But that info doesn't belong in advice to newcomers, and is more likely to scare someone than to help him.

I agree with the just-jump-right-in faction, except that I also think it is good to do a search first if you are thinking of posting a new thread. But there's no need to lurk for a year or read a hundred threads before posting.
ILX is both cliquish and welcoming, in my experience. No one here has ever met me in person, as far as I know (with the exception of one rare celebrity poster on ILM, and one poster I invited to ILM), yet people started responding to my posts pretty early on, and some seemed to go out of their way to be friendly.
