It's snowy in Virginia!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 30 January 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Steve, you're near me aren't you? Here in Uxbridge we keep having intermittent whiteouts (like right now) followed by clear patches, it's quite odd.

This morning we watched everything get covered in about five minutes, a couple of hours later I went out for lunch and there was no sign of it whatsoever???

chris (chris), Thursday, 30 January 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not very heavy here (SW London) but the wind is making it look wicked. And I have to actually *walk* somewhere in half an hour. Sheesh.

dog latin, Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

from my window I can see there's still snow on the top of the Brooklyn Bridge - ice floes in E River almost totally gone now though - haha last night on Daily Show Steven Colbert's pretending to be in D.C. bundled up in mittens etc even tho he's bluescreened 5 feet away from Stewart's desk; this is of course hilarious and they can't help but giggle and Stewart says "strange, i don't see any steam from your breath, Steven" "it's too COLD for that, Jon"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanx stevem, that made my day!

does anyone know the origin of those 'rain man' tags seen all over london?

the internet (scg), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I really love this thread. The pictures are all beautiful. I want to be in a real city at night with snow. Instead, it is day, the flurry is weaker than kitten piss, and I am in an office park.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I have to say, my anti-snow fatwa crumbles a bit on seeing all this. Looks like it would be fun to visit -- but then to go home to the sun from. ;-)

likewise, shouldnt Liverpool Street be in the North West of town?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 30 January 2003 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, is there a big market for draping fortresses? I'd have thought that was a pretty specialised niche.

Stevem made me laugh big time, especially in response to Matt. Why didn't you show last night, Stevem?

Full on blizzard going down in London next week, apparently. Proper snow for the second time in as many years!

A friend of mine claims the temperature is about to drop to -14 degrees but that MUST be bullshit.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I am so going to start saying "Wind chill factor!!!" loads from now on! Thanks Jel! SNOW = GREBT.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

From the Torygraph

Britain to be hit by cold snap next week
(Filed: 22/01/2004)

Britain is set to plunge into freezing temperatures with heavy snow showers next week, forecasters have warned.

Wintry weather last year caused travel chaos across Britain
The cold snap will begin on Sunday in Scotland and is expected to spread southwards, bringing snowfall to parts of England and Wales by Wednesday.

Forecasters said there will be a risk of heavy snow showers across Britain on Tuesday with temperatures falling to as low as minus 10C in Scotland. The freezing conditions are expected to last several days.

A spokesman for the Press Association's weathercentre said: "I don't think people should be dusting off their sledges just yet, but it does look like a significant cold snap at the start of next week."

Last January a spell of freezing weather caused chaos across Britain.

The worst incident happened when thousands of motorists were trapped overnight on the M11 in Cambridgeshire after it was blocked by several vehicles skidding off the motorway.

Also, I want to point and laugh at Stevem for that snowman thing upthread. Again.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 January 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, that is exactly what I had in mind and couldn't do, however this year it will be done, especially if I get my hand on the bodyboard like sledges that they have in costco

chris (chris), Friday, 23 January 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

GMTV got so excited they had a thing about 'how to dress in the cold' and advised wearing a hat. cheers GMTV. They also showed pics of New York being frozen and interviewed a road gritter man who said it might get so cold the salt they put on the roads will freeze in the gritter lorry (this was in the NE though).

Emma, Friday, 23 January 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It was grebt last year - all the sk8er kids had taken the wheels off their skateboards and were snowboarding. I'm sure much blood was shed that day.

I see 6 inches is classed as "very heavy snow" in the UK. Bless.

(whereas in the states, 6 inches is an entire inch bigger than the average erect penis)

Ice Ice Baby, Ice Ice Baby
All right stop, Collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new invention
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Flow like a harpoon daily and nightly
Will it ever stop? Yo -- I don't know
Turn off the lights and I'll glow
To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle.

Dance, go rush the speaker that booms
I'm killing your brain like a poisonous mushroom
deadly, when I play a dope melody
Anything less than the best is a felony
Love it or leave it, You better gain way
You better hit bull's eye, The kid don't play
If there was a problem, Yo, I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice Ice Baby Vanilla, Ice Ice Baby Vanilla
Ice Ice Baby Vanilla, Ice Ice Baby Vanilla

Now that the party is jumping
With the bass kicked in and the Vegas are pumpin'
Quick to the point, to the point no faking
Cooking MCs like a pound of bacon
Burnin’ ‘em if you aint quick and nimble
I go crazy when I hear a cymbal
And a hi hat with a souped up tempo
I'm on a roll, it's time to go solo
Rollin' in my 5.0
With my ragtop down so my hair can blow
The girlies on standby, Waving just to say Hi
Did you stop? No -- I just drove by
Kept on pursuing to the next stop
I busted a left and I'm heading to the next block
That block was dead

Yo -- so I continued to A1A Beachfront Avenue
Girls were hot wearing less than bikinis
Rockman lovers driving Lamborghinis
Jealous 'cause I'm out geting mine
Shay with a gauge and Vanilla with a nine
Ready for the chumps on the wall
The chumps acting ill because they're full of “Eight Ball”
Gunshots ranged out like a bell
I grabbed my nine -- All I heard were shells
Falling on the concrete real fast
Jumped in my car, slammed on the gas
Bumper to bumper the avenue's packed
I'm trying to get away before the jackers jack
Police on the scene, You know what I mean
They passed me up, confronted all the dope fiends
If there was a problem, Yo, I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

Ice Ice Baby Vanilla, Ice Ice Baby Vanilla
Ice Ice Baby Vanilla, Ice Ice Baby Vanilla

Take heed, 'cause I'm a lyrical poet
Miami's on the scene just in case you didn't know it
My town, that created all the bass sound
Enough to shake and kick holes in the ground
'Cause my style's like a chemical spill
Feasible rhymes that you can vision and feel
Conducted and formed, This is a hell of a concept
We make it hype and you want to step with this
Shay plays on the fade, slice like a ninja
Cut like a razor blade so fast, Other DJs say, "damn"
If my rhyme was a drug, I'd sell it by the gram

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 January 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, i'm scared that i knew most of the words up till the last section. which, when i just rapped in a whisper so people at work don't laugh at me, was really hard to do.

so where's this snow, matt? it's just grey and dark right now. snow! snow!snow!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 23 January 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It is indeed scary when you know most of the words to that, I pride myself on it though!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 January 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe we should buy the single for our trip to scotland. we can practice it and karaoke it at some bar in aberdeen.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 23 January 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

That's is such a GREAT idea!

Pinkice (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 January 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, matt might end up being right! on the radio on the way to work they were saying 'this time tomorrow it'll be really really cold and loads of snow will be here in london.'

still no evidence of this on the weather websites. i guess if it snows tomorrow then i'll have to stop looking at weather websites as accurately predicting the future.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 26 January 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Most trailed weather ever.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 26 January 2004 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The chart for midday Wednesday looks potentially very nasty indeed, even in the soft south.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 26 January 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no! Occluded Fronts! Oh NO!

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 26 January 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be kipping in the office again then.

(although I only live across the road from work!)

(but Pond Street will be a ski slope!!)

Phoebe Dinsmore, Monday, 26 January 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

where can i buy gloves, scarf and a deerstalker hat around Angel way after 6pm?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's confusing, because some websites say it is going to snow & others sat it isn't. hmm, who to believe!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

According to this morning's Metro the snow's going to fall to the east of London rather than in London itself.

Phoebe Dinsmore, Monday, 26 January 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Romford FAP?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2004 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps it is being strangely drawn to the Beckton Alp.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 26 January 2004 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

who knew?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Gordon Burns. He knows all.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hell he knew Gracie the whale was pregnant even before Mr Spock.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Why?

PinkAja (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, my office has decided that it will not snow tomorrow, but might snow on wednesday.

anyone want to fight about it?

colette (a2lette), Monday, 26 January 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

In the Evening Standard the Met Office are hedging their bets. Snow now not expected until "late on Wednesday" as the cold air front from the north is moving "more slowly than expected." I'll believe it when I see it.

Phoebe Dinsmore, Monday, 26 January 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I want snow! *stamps foot*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

steve, i think next is open at least till 7 most nights, you could get hat and gloves and scarf there.

or you can borrow some from me (i'm not being gross and trying to lure you to my house, honest. just being from michigan means i have about 5 scarves and many hats and lots of gloves)

colette (a2lette), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Colette, I am starting to get jealous! Humph! I leave London for two weeks and you start macking on Stevem.

I cannot believe it. There have been blizards across the entire East Coast, but somehow they managed to avoid Vermont. North Carolina is under a sheet of ice. NORTH CAROLINA!!! But here there was narry a flurry.

Ahhh, snow in London. Too bad I'm missing it.

the river fleet, Monday, 26 January 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

We Londoners also seem to be missing it at the moment.

Phoebe Dinsmore, Monday, 26 January 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

don't worry, i'll take pictures for you.

(i'm only macking so he doesn't get too lonely until you get back. i figured that after all the constant attention, he might get sad without you around)

colette (a2lette), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Colette, does your Campaign To Get Howard Dean Elected As President And In The Meantime To Compromise Stevem's Masculinity Even More Than It Already Was know no bounds??? ;)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloody weather forecasters they promised so much, but it's only just a little bit colder :(

jel -- (jel), Monday, 26 January 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 26 January 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll snow this afternoon.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

there was a little bit of snow in the rain at Harrow this morning but it stopped very quickly

BBC website has no snow for London this week!!

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The BBC website is always like that! It never predicts heavy rain either.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

it haled for about 30 seconds here this morning!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe all the fuss about this. -9 isn't that cold is it? It's hardly 1963.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yahoo has Malmo snowing all week and going to -10, that's more like it, it's going to be great

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

it's cloudy but bright here - the sun is out, i'm just glad it's not as cold as was hyped.

maybe they just love bread

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Course, I live in the freaky Brighton weather pocket which is always different to the rest of the country. Sunny and not really that cold yet.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

P'raps!
Cambridge must be the same as Brighton Archel. All the websites that said it was gonna snow here, now say it's gonna be sunny!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe they're going to build a fire out of bread.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

toasty fire huh! hee hee

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

no snow here. was reading a little of the guardian's 'how to deal with cold' story and got disgusted and stopped.

it is pretty cold out, but it isn't so cold people should start to panic. my parents said that it was like -10F there, with several inches of snow each day and nothing is shutting down.

i hope it snows tomorrow, though. i was so hopeful when i woke up, trying to hear if it was extra quiet outside because the snow muffled everything. sigh.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I did that, but alas! I am beginning to fear I may never see the snow again! *cries*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Portsmouth = same as Brighton right now. Looks about as likely to snow as rain frogs.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Living in Cambridge you'll see snow again, Pinkx0r. I want to see it in Putney. Thick, so that grass etc. is totally covered.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it was snowing lightly at midnight when anna and i got home last night.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not exactly a slow news week, so why all the ballyhoo and brouhaha about some poxy snow and a bit of cold? I don't think it's exceptionally cold for January. Has everyone gone soft or what?

Enrique P. Coldchain (Enrique), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No, everyone just wants a day off work!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It was going to be much worse snow but Blair called it off when he found out he didn't need to bury the Hutton report after all.

What makes him special, makes him dangerous.

New Labour, New Weather Front.

2nd phone call from James: I'm not going home, I'm going to the pub!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Right and now the blizzard has started in central London no-one mentions it. You guys!!!

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i just got completely covered in the snow walkin back from the bus stop..

marcg (marcg), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

THUNDER SNOW STORM! WIND CHILL FACTOR! WAHOO!!!!!!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeez, that was a proper blizzard - and I've never known lightning to accompany snow. It was totally freakin' atonal.

Walked home from Tulse Hill (buses not getting anywhere in southeast London), got chatting to a young woman as we yomped across Norwood Park - new to the neighbourhood, Daily Express journalist. She seemed suitably embarrassed about that, though.

Outside it's -1.6C but, more worryingly, it's only 14.5C in the bedroom. Radiators work more efficiently if you don't pile stuff up in front of them, don't they?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It took me half an hour just to walk the 500 or so yards from my office to my front door! Why do I always end up living in places with steeply sloping streets? Still I'm glad I no longer have to slog it all the way back to Streatham - must be hellish out there at the moment.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

How much snow is there?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

This piece of comedy from BBC News:

London covered in snow

A blanket of snow has fallen in London as the predicted cold snap spreads.

People living in north London have reported up to three inches settling on the ground in some areas.

The snow showers started just as rush hour began and traffic is delayed on the M25 as motorists slow down in the wet and icy conditions.

Tubes and trains are also suffering problems and some flights from Heathrow and Gatwick airports have been cancelled.

Hundreds of passengers have been stranded after British Airways cancelled 36 flights out of Heathrow, in west London, and Gatwick, in Sussex.

In Crystal Palace, south London, people have abandoned their cars as the snow is making it impossible to drive up the surrounding slopes [so indeed slopy Streatham must be hellish].

LU statement

A section of the Metropolitan Line has been suspended between Chesham Station and Chalfont and Latimer Station.

Some Northern Line stations have also been closed.

The cold weather was also blamed for disrupting Tubes in the morning rush hour.

Some services on parts of the Tube network which are above ground, particularly in north and west London, were unable to run.

Thousands of passengers on sections of the Metropolitan, Piccadilly, Central and Jubilee lines were affected.

Morning closures

London Underground (LU) has apologised for the problems saying contingency plans did not work properly.

There were also delays on South Eastern, Chiltern and West Anglia Great Northern (WAGN) trains.

By 1200 GMT on Wednesday there had been no service between Chesham and Watford or between Chalfont and Latimer and Chesham on the Metropolitan Line.

Chiltern Railways, which uses an adjoining section of track, was unable to run services between Aylesbury and Marylebone.

The Central Line between North Acton and West Ruislip in the west and between Woodford and Hainault in the east was closed during the morning.

'Improve our response'

LU said the problems were caused by ice on the tracks.

In a statement, it said: "London Underground apologises for the disruption to services this morning due to ice forming on some rails.

"London Underground has comprehensive contingencies in place which have been developed over a number of years. Obviously last night these did not fully work in all areas.

"Our plans are being further enhanced so we can learn any lessons and improve our response to future incidents."

[Thus, ten days' notice, the most hyped freeze-up ever and still they sat on their arses until it was too late to do anything]

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

People living in north London have reported up to three inches settling on the ground in some areas.

three inches? uh...

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, it's pathetic. London doesn't really get snow very often, you see. It used to, when I was a kid, although I am starting to believe I am exaggerating this in my mind on the basis of a couple of snowmen I once built in the garden.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

weird. i know it's not a snow-prone land, but the amount of havoc that this seems to have caused is on par with the hell that breaks loose in the southern states when an inch or so falls. i would have thought things were a bit more winter-proof (london underground excepted).

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, Seattle and London have something in common, except Seattle has one tenth the enthusiasm. :)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Lauren, London underground is the bloodstream to London's brisk aerobic exercise. If it doesn't work properly, everything shuts down.

there was a very moderate amount of snow falling in london early this morning, although since i don't remember any snow last winter it seemed notable enough
