Is There an ILE Introduce Yourself Thread?

If not (sorry I can't search on this dial-up connection), I'm just gonna start. Hi, I'm hstencil. I'm 27 years old, and I live in Astoria, Queens, New York City, New York, USA (have only been here since October of last year). I'm a "regular" at ILM, the FMBB, the PRL and I've never really posted much to ILE but I guess I'm starting now. I like this place. I come off as irritable at times but I'm usually just "taking the piss." Some people think I'm a bully, though. Sorry.

Anyway, hi, how's it going? Uh, it's the boring Thursday night before Valentine's Day, and I don't feel like burning CDs for people (sorry jack cole!).

hstencil, Friday, 14 February 2003 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i was wondering this too.
i'm gaz, I'm also on ILM a bit. dull there this week. here is better. i think i'll stay.
i live in sydney australia. i work at a tv station. i can't wait for the next two hours to pass then i can go home.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 14 February 2003 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi hstencil. Hi gaz.

I searched and found a couple of "introduction" threads, but then lost my darn wireless connection and don't feel like arguing with my computer to do the search again.

I'm Laura - 29 - female - Orlando, Florida. Heck, just look at that little profile thingy if you want to know more about me :)

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

profile thingy?

What's it like living in Orlando? I generally go there (well, at least Disney) once a year for conferences, and well, uh, heh, it's someplace I can't imagine living (not trying to insult, just wondering - my stepsis lived there once).

hi gaz. hi laura.

hstencil, Friday, 14 February 2003 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

how do you make a profile?

Maria (Maria), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I probably haven't done this before. I still think of myself as a mostly-not-so-much-posting lurker type, but I think I've been reading for a couple months now.

Bill or Tep (I picked the latter to use only because I figured there'd be Bills aplenty), either works. 27. Former New Englander, have permanently escaped to temporarily reside in New Orleans, but will always miss Moxie. Supposedly a graduate student in history, but that's pretty much an excuse to pay the rent while I write stories for pocket money -- and in the fall, I'll be a graduate student in something-else-altogether someplace-else-entirely. The plan is to keep increasing that "pocket money" before I max out my Stafford loans.

I have two cats and many plastic frogs.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

hstencil, where in astoria do you live?

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't give specifics over da intanet jess but it's near the 30th Ave. N/W stop. I thought you lived in Olympia, anyways.

hstencil, Friday, 14 February 2003 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, i do, but i lived in astoria in 2000/2001. near 37th and broadway.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah I see well I guess if you still lived there we could SETTLE OUR SCORE IN PERSON, PUNK!

Or I coulda just told you about how I was out your way last November for my bro's wedding.

But real-life encounters with online characters creep me outare so gratifying, just ask gygax!

hstencil, Friday, 14 February 2003 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

hi hstencil

(sorry I can't search on this dial-up connection),

the slowness of the search is to do with the server, not your connection.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm Ned. Fear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:42 (twenty-three years ago)

whoops, thanks N. Still, I like to blame AOL for everything when I'm dialin' in from home (not on company time).

hstencil, Friday, 14 February 2003 03:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't fear the Raggett
C'mon Baby
We can learn to fly

hstencil, Friday, 14 February 2003 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

With some tweaks my ILM intro from May of last year

Age 31, queer, smoker, coffee fiend, pop culture junkie.

Live in Addis Ababa, run my own company doing event-production (film festivals, concerts etc.) and promotional work. Do some writing on occasion and keep meaning to do more.

Music, listen to a little bit of everything though mostly 'world music' and hip hop these days. Semi-lurker, partly from being scared of finding yet another reason to procrastinate (I already spend too much time reading stuff let alone posting) and partly being scared of everyone. I've posted more today than I have in the last 3 or 4 months due partly to insomnia and being somewhat buzzed.
ok, done now.

(Maria, go to Settings at the bottom of the page and then you can create a Profile, change ILXor settings etc.)

H (Heruy), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:45 (twenty-three years ago)

partly being scared of everyone

Don't be scared of me, H. TOO much.

Actually, help me out here -- what's the best Ethiopian beer, anyway? I've tried several that are good enough but I'm wondering if there's a real standout.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"Profile thingy" = If you click on the "Users" link at the bottom, and then click on the names on the list, you'll be taken to a page with personal descriptions, if people have filled them in (I think I'm the only one *sigh*) Anyway, if you want to do you own, go into your "Settings" and type away!

About Orlando - I hate it I hate it I hate it! (Does that answer your question?) Actually, I am fascinated by the wilderness here, and the wildlife (can't get enough of those armadillos and aligators and gigantic tree frogs in my toilet!) but I pretty much dislike the people and the lack of culture and the urban sprawl and so forth. I guess that one of the problems with Orlando is that it's a relatively new city, and it grew so fast that it didn't develop any heart or center or sense of community. And most people view time in Orlando as being transitory, so they don't make the effort to try to improve things (me included - well, er, I don't make the effort rather than me needing to be improved). There are some good people, but most are underground and isolated - it's a community without much of a soul, sadly. But I really do love the wildlife - the gopher tortoises and sea turtles and manatees and (er, doesn't belong in this list of animals, but what the hell) the space program.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I've done this on ILM, but not yet ILE....whose broad waters I've only tenuously dipped my toe into,...uncertain of its contents.

I'm a 35 yr old male livin' & workin' in Manhattan, New York City. I've been married for a little over a year & a half. I'm a News Desk Editor at a prominent weekly news magazine, and I freelance write on the side (although pretty much only for THE NEW YORKER's "Goings On About Town" section these days). I've become a regular on ILM after someone foolishly questioned the majesty of Killing Joke back in 2001, thus summoning me like Hastur the Unspeakable to protect Killing Joke's good name and to ensure the Fire gets duly Honored. I'm also a member of The Gathering ( http://www.misera.net/gathering/ ) and the Firewatercircus ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/firewatercircus/ ). New York City is a scary place these days -- but there seems to be a lot of that going around.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and stencil? Do fear ol' Neddy - he's a threat to the sanity of us all. And his family indulges in group backrubs or something (I actually need to read that thread rather then just guessing at the contents).

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi everyone! I said hello on another thread but I haven't really introduced myself. I'm Fidelma. I also live in Sydney, Australia, and I also work at a tv station (kinda).

I have one week to go before I leave work forever and go back to uni to study journalism. I'm excited, and I'm feeling less guilt about being on the net at work. So, hi.

Fidelma (fidelma), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

which station Fidelma? (if i can ask...)

gaz (gaz), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going to add to mine cause these things are more fun if we list our favorite items of arbitrary categories. (And because I'm printing out a 200 page ms. on an old printer, so I have time to kill.)

Favorite beer: Hoegaarden.
Favorite word at the moment: synecdoche.
Favorite Bowie cover in my Winamp playlist: Sister Machine Gun's "Suffragette City."
Favorite recently-purchased album: Sister Machine Gun's Metropolis, although that's a coincidence.
Favorite ice cream: Serious Burnt Sugar, from some local place.
Favorite vanilla clove cigarette: Djarum Vanilla.
Favorite Daredevil villain this thread has reminded me of: Mr Fear.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 14 February 2003 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

my name is jason, i'm 23 and i live in oakland, california. i'm good husband material. i am here to steal yr knowledge

boxcubed (boxcubed), Friday, 14 February 2003 04:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Do fear ol' Neddy - he's a threat to the sanity of us all.

I do try.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 February 2003 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

ah Ned, thanks. actually you were the first person to welcome me on to ILM and here again.

Ethiopian beers are pretty crappy, so my advise is to avoid 'em. Well, uninteristing is a more accurate description - so if they have 'em try St. George for a lager, Harar Stout (which is closer to a Porter) or Bati. There are others but everything is pretty watered down for me as I miss ales, stouts and dark(er) beers generally.

and I just realised it is 7 and i need to start getting ready for work. aargh.

H (Heruy), Friday, 14 February 2003 04:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Off you go, then. And yer welcome, and thanks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 February 2003 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Gaz, I could tell you, but then I'd have to charge you eight cents a day for the privilege. So there's your answer.

I just have to ask, jason/boxcubed - why do you think you're good husband material? ( I was through Oakland last spring - but just driving through on my way from SF International to the foothills of the Sierras. But I have been to Oakland Children's Hospital when I was much younger - in fact, back when I was a child, I do believe *grin*)

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 14 February 2003 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

didn't Tom say that there shouldn't be an ILE introductions thread because we are what we post (or something)?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 14 February 2003 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi sand.y *smile*

Ned - I'm so glad you do work to keep us insane. It's a great relief that we don't have to assume that responsibility on our own. We should take-up a donation for you or something.

And I tend to be good-natured and find joy and beauty and laughter in the world - sick, isn't it? I am happy most of the time and very content with my life.

Name: JBR

Location: NYC

Age: 26

Fav Band: Gah, "band" is so rockist. Suffice to say, I like postwar pop and R&B singles, "jammin' oldies" (disco/soul/house, esp. with shouty girl singers), punk-wave-powerpop-indie, mopey British nonsense, the piano as a rock instrument, experimental whatsis (turntables, tape loops, and all those crackpot Germans you read about), 20th c. classical, '60s British folk-rock, easy-listening & other AM-radio detritus, '70s Brazilian samba-funk, choral masses, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, various singers and songwriters.

Fav Movie: Woody Allen's Love and Death

Fav TV Show: those horrible dating shows

Fav Book: There were five books I read as a kid that made me really interested in music -- the 1979 Rolling Stone Record Guide; Joel Whitburn's Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits (1987); a British coffeetable book from the early '80s (can't remember the name) that had short articles and pictorials about rock bands like the Jam and Duran Duran; History of American Bandstand: It's Got a Great Beat and You Can Dance to It (1987); and a book about NYC hip-hop/breakdance/graffiti culture. For better or worse, these books helped turn me into the obsessive weirdo I am today, so they take precedence on the pecking order.

David R. - I've both "Infinite Jest" and "The Intuitionist" on my shelves - which is the better/easier escapism? (I need to take one on the road with me - the other books have already been selected.)

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 14 February 2003 08:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Since you're going on the road, I'd choose The Intuitionist, simply for weight & size reasons. Both are great, but IJ can get a little cumbersome with its 400+ pages of footnotes. IJ is a book that you nurse on your bedside bureau over the course of a couple of weeks; The Intuitionist is more user-friendly. Go w/ the elevator inspectors, madam.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 February 2003 08:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I kinda don't want to do the fill-in-the-blanks survey because, well, I think it's more interesting when people write in sentences, and anyway there are way too many categories where I don't really have an interesting answer.

Not that I am suggesting that this is going to be an interesting post.

But I already posted something not long ago in an "Introduce Yourself" thread (although, sure, that was before taking part in an explosive thread and working my way onto the top 50 users list) (ha! I'm exactly tied with Oops right now! But this post will push me over him... for now...).

So.

That, right there, that is me in a nutshell.

Or, in another nutshell: I'm 27, male, and I live in Portland, Ore., though like everyone else I used to live in Astoria, NY (1997-9, Grand Central Parkway and 36th). I, like, I'm in this band, and I'm in this other band, and I help organize this avant-garde poetry reading series, and I've edited this webzine for a few years, and I have this cat, and this job at an environmental advocacy group, and I do some web design, and I do all this other stuff, and so I keep busy. Which is weird, since I don't think of myself as a busy guy. I mean, I seem to spend most of my day goofing off on the Internet, so am I really that busy? I dunno. It would explain why I'm so frickin' tired all the time. Also I am single and something of a homebody and I live in a house where we aim to have books in every room (we are almost there) and I've got two turntables and two microphones so clearly, clearly I am doing pretty well in that department.

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 14 February 2003 08:44 (twenty-three years ago)

hey chris can you extrapolate on "this avant-garde poetry reading series"?

Eyes: Dark brown

Sex: Male / regular

Location: Dawlish / Exeter, Devon, South West England

Age: 23 (24 in May)

Fav Band: Don't know. The Stone Roses always used to be the stock answer but that has become somewhat subject to rapid and unpredictable change these days.

Fav Movie: As above, but with Jaws.

Fav TV Show: The Simpsons is about the only thing I watch with anything approaching regularity.

Fav Book: The Subtle Knife! For the next 113 pages, anyway.

Fav Actor: I have no favourite actor - I like films. It's kind of like asking me what my favoruite musical instrument is - I like music, as soon as I mention one, another comes to mind, and then another, and then their bad points, and so on and so on... It is not the individual components that matter, but the whole product.

Fav Actress: Monica Belucci. Emily Dequenne. Not necessarily for their acting ability (although both are very good!). See above.

Fav Food: And again. I like food. I really like food. Chocolate. Cheese. Toast. Bacon. Potatos. Eggs. Ice cream. Brownies. I could go on and on and on and on...

Fav Sport: There are three sports - hutning, shooting and fishing. The rest are just games. My favoruite game is football.

Fav Athlete: Maradona.

Drink of Choice: Water. Orange juice. Red wine. Guinness. German lager. Milkshakes. God, all of it except coffee.

Drug of Choice (if that's your thing): Booze. Life. Music.

Smoker? : Nope.

Occupation: Audio/Visual Library Assistant / (unpaid) music writer / layabout / pontificater.

Do you work out? : I play football. I occasioanlly cycle. I walk lots. I intend to start swimming next week.

On a scale from 1-10 how would you rate your looks? : 10.

On a scale from 1-10 how would you rate your personality? : 10 (is there ANY point in giving any other number?).

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 14 February 2003 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure. I'm part of a collective of about seven people called Spare Room who organize a reading more-or-less monthly series here in Portland. We focus on "avant-garde" or "post-avant" or "experimental" or something -- we haven't quite figured out the right adjective to put there, and don't really want to be forced to. Generally, we're interested in writers who are at least familiar with, say, the New York schools, the Black Mtn poets, the Language folks, the whatever-the-hell-you'd-call-Jackson Mac Low folks, and the sound/visual poets. So next week we've got a sound poetry extravaganza, with 12 Pacific NW poets coming into town and a bank of cell phones set up so sound poets throughout the world can call in at a particular point. It should be interesting. We also organize an annual hunger benefit marathon reading. Mostly we do these monthly readings that usually feature a visiting poet and a local poet (for instance, we've had Chris Stroffolino and Charles Borkhuis read, as well as locals such as Cynthia Kimball).

I would send you to the website but it's a bit threadbare and out of date (all my own damn fault)...

Thanks David, The Intuitionist it is. Have you read um, John Henry Days? (Sorry, it's late and I was drawing a severe blank, but I figured that if I kept typing it would come to mind.)

I'd no idea about IJ - someone sent it to me as a gift and it's sitting right next to "Mason & Dixon" and "The Recognitions" and "JR" and "Underworld", to name a few on my "unread as yet" shelfs - and it just looks so darn heavy! (Physically and mentally, I mean.)

I'm taking with me, in addition to The Intuitionist, a book on the Soviet Manned space program, a history of the word "Fuck," and something by Mahfouz, I think. And, just maybe, a book of interviews with Palestinians and Israelis about the current (well, semi-current, now) situation in that region. I need something cheery to read.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 14 February 2003 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

For whatever it's worth, I never got into Infinite Jest. I found a lot of it painfully unfunny. After a few hundred pages I gave up.

After that I read a lot of DFW's other work and enjoyed most of it.

(Similarly, I enjoyed Mason & Dixon until they actually started, you know, surveying the Mason-Dixon line. Then it suddenly got bland for me. But it is a wonderful book to have on your shelf, especially if it's the hardcover: It's a gorgeous object!)

John Henry Days is sitting on my bookshelf, sandwiched by a good number of books I've bought & haven't read. I'm still working up the courage to try & read a non-school, non-comic book for the pure purpose of leisure. (Poetry collections don't count, of course, because there's no need to commit.) I've heard mixed things about JHD, actually, but given how great The Intuitionist is, I'm not worried.

On a scale from 1-10 how would you rate your personality?: unanswerable. I have a good heart, I love friends, I am enthusiastic about others, but I can be a bad-tempered, irrational, jealous fun-hater.

I don't live in Puntey, either. And I proof read the bloody thing three times! I live in Putney, it's very nice.

I also forgot in the TV column any historical documentary with Adam Hart-Davis. He's so cuddly!

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 14 February 2003 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure I've done this before too, but here goes

Also, I'm another person who doesn't like fill-in-the-blanks surveys. My name is Caitlin, although that's not what it says on my birth certificate or my passport. I'm 25, I'm English but I've lived in Edinburgh since I was 18. My taste in anything - music, books, films, art, whatever - tends to be pretty eclectic, so whenever anyone asks: "Who's you favourite [blah]", I go a bit blank. I'm a computer geek - well, a geek generally - and I first found ILX via Sinister.

If you want to know anything else about me, go here.

Thought I'd join in.I've been hanging around here for a while, but never introduced myself. You probably guess that Eugene Speed isn't my real name,it's my alter-ego DJ name.I am in the construction trade, and have been a DJ since 1987.I live in Essex,England and take great delight in terrorising the highways with various mental motors I build in my workshop.I spend too much money on eBay buying records and F1 memorabilia, and I also puff too much weed.I've been good recently, though.Anyway,I am engaged to the lovely Max Speed, she likes high-horsepower Japanese cars and Kiki Raikkonen. We have a cat,who we strongly belive is an alien, and three birds who live in the kitchen.I love all forms of dance music except 2-Step garage and gangster rap.I have been on pirate radio on and off since 1991,having run my own station on the Isle of Man and then playing on several London pirates such as Eruption,Klass and Shakedown FM.More recently,I had a slot on Premier 88.6 in Essex. And I'm a total internet slag.I sit here slagging away for hours, wasting my time and having fun whilst doing so.You get the picture.Hi,anyway.

Hello ILE.

I'm a bored/boring slugabed, biding my time on the east coast (Boston), until the end of March, when it's back to Michigan with me. In the interim, with no job and nothing much to do, I imagine I'll post 'round here pretty often. To answer some of the questions floating around on this thread, I just read Balzac's Lost Illusions, and that's got me amped to read more of La Comédie Humaine (any recommendations?). When I had money I bought lots of music. I'm excited about the prospect of once again having money and being near Record Time and Stormy Records. I also look forward to listening to Gary Chandler on 'JLB. My favorite food is bok choy, which I like to fix up with tofu and garlic and rice. I can't recommend my looks or my personality. My fondest wish at the moment is that I could stop squandering my abundant free time--and I don't mean reading ILX, which is a much more constructive use of my time than, say, staring out the window for hours on end, then nervously pacing for a while, then contemplating starting smoking again, etc.

Howard Grimes was brought up to play just like Al Jackson (according to Peter Guralnik in Sweet Soul Music), and rhythmically they're virtually identical. Grimes grips the drumsticks a bit tighter, he doesn't have the subtlety or beauty or grace, quite, though he is a fantastic drummer himself. The difference is just in the touch.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

You're a weird guy, Chris.
Here you go.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice and blurry so as too protect everyone. Strangely enough, that picture was taken several years ago and I'm wearing that sweater today.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Obv "white coffee, milk" = I am the mistress of tautology.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay for Shiraz!

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

What the heck makes you qualify as a zero, Bryan? I was expecting a third eye or a missing nose at the very least. I am sorely disappointed -- even blurry it seems difficult to believe that you would rate below a 4, and are quite possibly much higher than that.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in agreement with Chris--you're certainly much better looking than you're rating yourself.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

No I'm not. You're all nutz. Actually, I was just fishing for compliments! Thanks guys!

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

A zero would constitute some freakish abnormality, like say, a UNIBROW.

Behold!

Leee (Leee), Monday, 3 March 2003 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I lack one of those, thank goodness. Ok, I'm a 3. Happy now?

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 00:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought I might fill this in before I get really depressed again and disappear for a couple of years.

Name: ChristineSH.
Location: The middle of England, i.e. not Swindon.
Age: 34, i.e. not 17.
Fav Band: A rubber one.
Fav Movie: The original King Kong, if I'm being sentimental about my childhood.
Fav TV Show: Can't pick one, so I'll say Columbo anyway.
Fav Book: The complete Sherlock Holmes collection. Or To Kill a Mockingbird. Or Misery.
Fav Actor: Gregory Peck.
Fav Actress: Kathy Bates.
Fav Food: Something with chicken in it.
Fav Sport: No.
Fav Athlete: No!
Substance abuse generally: Only drugs for allegedly medical reasons. Of course, I'd be much healthier without them.
Occupation: Just a lot of pre-occupations atm.
Do you work out? Things rarely work out where I'm concerned.
On a scale from 1-10 how would you rate your looks? 2.363. I'm fundamentally ugly and strange. (See: http://www.ampcon.freeserve.co.uk/jan03.jpg -- admittedly an extremely bad hair day, and Martin says it's very unflattering, but a nice hairdo can only do so much! Is there a plastic surgeon in the house?)
On a scale from 1-10 how would you rate your personality? 4. Only because I've been told I'm interesting -- a description I think I'm failing to live up to very badly.
Add anything you want people to know: I'm half Irish, and don't I look it. I was raised as a Catholic but terminally lapsed when I was 15. I thought I might be a great artist but I was rubbish at drawing. (Damned inconvenient, that.) I still think I might be a writer, though not a great one necessarily. I'm writing a novel (or rather, novella) that I might finish before I'm 65. I'm fairly depressed and quite lonely and chagrined to be living in a little flea-pit town full of dull, unintelligent Wayne & Waynetta Slob clones. I used to read lots of comics but I got over it. Martin's right: Johnny Depp is incredibly sexy. But so is Denzel Washington. I didn't give a straight answer to the band question, but musically David Bowie still rules. I sometimes wear glasses.

I drone on too much.

ChristineSH, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're a 2.363 Christine, I'm definitely going back down to 0. I'm also a lapsed Catholic (left the church when our priest was nice enough to tell us that the creation story was a bunch of crap - saw no point in staying after that!).

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 00:52 (twenty-three years ago)

And you don't drone on too much either. That's kind of the idea of this place, anyway, isn't it?

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 05:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Name: Matt Maxwell

Location: San Diego, CA, US of A

Age: Old enough to know better. I was two when man walked on the moon.

Fav Bands: Spacemen 3, Stooges, Tom Waits, Pink Floyd, Acid Mothers Temple

Fav Movie: _Blade Runner_

Fav TV Show: Hmm. _Twin Peaks_

Fav Book: Chandler's Philip Marlowe series. Not kidding.

Fav Food: Meat.

Drink of Choice: Guinness or Bass (which i'm sadly allergic to.) Moving onto the occasional scotch.

Drug of Choice (if that's your thing): Caffeine, television.

Smoker? : Not recently

Occupation : Author/artist/animator

On a scale from 1-10 how would you rate your looks? : I'm a geeky Adonis! But i don't photograph well.

On a scale from 1-10 how would you rate your personality? : Pet-rock like.

Add anything you want people to know: Blame Ned for my presence.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 05:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Bryan: I edited that rambling down a bit, so you never saw the full-blown droning action. :) I'm still learning this 'too much information' thing and ultimately I felt that mentioning Basil Brush was going too far. (I saw him once. He's REAL. Honest. Although the one on now is a camp imposter.)

ChristineSH, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Blame Ned for my presence.

All part of the plan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

hey that monobrow dude is no zero!

minna (minna), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Today I am describing myself in 7 words:
*TALL (I think every single girl at the show last night must have been under 5')
*TIRED (I was up arguing with my bf in the wee hours over stupid stuff)
*IN NEED OF COFFEE (related to being TIred)
*IN NEED OF ROCK (I want to go home, lay on the floor and play loud guitar until I fall asleep)
*OLD (Why does 25 feel so old today?)
*ILL-FITTING (my shirt is too tight and skirt keeps almost falling off)
*HAPPY (despite everything listed above. Today will be a good day. In the 50s I hear).

Sarah Hotnights (coco), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt, where in MI are you from? It's one of the areas I might possibly be moving to in a couple months, so I'm curious.
-- lyra (lyra6...), March 2nd, 2003.

I grew up in the far northern suburbs of Detroit (I guess since all of America now speaks in terms of mile roads, I can tell you that I lived on 23 Mile), then I lived in Ann Arbor for a few years. I'm aiming to live in Dearborn when I get back.

What areas are you looking at?

Matt B. (Matt B.), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Christine: Basil Brush is an enigma to me. Still, you should drone on all you like. "Whatever turns your crank", as my dad would say.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

''On a scale from 1-10 how would you rate your looks? 2.363.''

christine: and that's good bcz 1 is best looking (yes it is!)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

2.363 is good? Something went wrong...

Ah, Basil Brush. Well, apparently, someone actually did a site about him -- http://www.cribba.freeserve.co.uk/ -- but I don't think it'll mean much. I liked him when I was a kid. We went to one of the shows in 1980. (Guest-star: Demis Roussos! Someone else hardly anyone's heard of!)

ChristineSH, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
This is a homeopathic posting. I've been lurking and occasionally posting, under various names, for a few months now (some of you may recall an appearance by Pontius Pilate; posts by other aliases are just too lame to bring up), and I thought it was high time I either shat or depotted. I call it homeopathic because I've noticed that people regularly introduce themselves here, list fave bands and so on, and then are never heard from again. Since I don't have the time to do ILx (and trusting these disappearances are not, like, disappearances, if you know what I mean), I'm introducing myself partly in hopes it will have that magic effect on me. Don't get me wrong: I looove ILx. But I've also had to delete solitaire from every computer I've ever owned.

So, the name is Methuselah because I am 900 years old. I live in rural upstate New York (where it's still snowing, as I write). I'm married and have a 3 1/2-year-old son. My musical tastes are all over the map. My favorite movie is L'Atalante, by Jean Vigo. I have 300 favorite books. There's no TV reception here without a satellite dish, and I won't go that far. My favorite food is Indonesian. I used to smoke and am now addicted to Nicorette gum. I enjoy beer, red wine, brandy, ganja and its cousins, and the occasional mushroom. I pine for opium but haven't seen any in years. I do work out because otherwise I would die. I'm a writer. You really don't want to know about my looks. My personality's pretty thorny. I didn't get here by random googling: I know or semi-know a couple of other posters. They'll know who they are when they look at my e-mail address.

Methuselah (Methuselah), Saturday, 5 April 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Welcome! Even though you've been here already. :-) May I ask where in upstate New York -- the Adirondacks?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 April 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Ned! The Catskills, actually.

Methuselah (Methuselah), Sunday, 6 April 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

yay! I love the Catskills!

hstencil, Sunday, 6 April 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Give me Liberty or give me Monticello!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 April 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, see, that's not upstate to me. I lived in Saratoga Springs, the Catskills was this mystic place down south. ;-) Anyway, yer welcome!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 April 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

To a Gothamite (and I was one for untold decades), the Catskills are about three inches from the Canadian border. Besides, what else would I say, "midstate"? But Liberty and Monticello aren't in the 'Skills, they're in the 'Gunks.

Methuselah (Methuselah), Sunday, 6 April 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Gah. There are so many people here who I look up to who are MUCH YOUNGER than me. Maybe that's a positive.

My entry above was really dull, too.

Incidentally, McLusty: "my shirt is too tight and skirt keeps almost falling off" - this is a bad thing, you're saying?

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm... I don't see where I posted that but I believe you. I tend to have that problem. My shirts always shrink in the wash and I've lost some weight since last year so I'm always having to safety-pin my skirts.

I turn 26 this year. That's not really young, right? (cuz of course I'm assuming you look up to me too ha ha)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been reminded to post to this thread a few times already, and I am now at work and horribly unmotivated, so...

I suppose since there is at least one other Martin around here, I may need to specify a last name. Or not. Perhaps I can be the Martin without a last name and still avoid confusion. Or I can just let the rest of you decide and watch the differentiation take shape organically. My last name is Mushrush, and I don't like nicknames. At least not any that have been given to me so far.

I am in Nashville, formerly from NYC (Hell's Kitchen and Carroll Gardens, respectively), and I'll be moving again around the end of September, this time to Seattle. I will be in NYC this weekend.

Jen Nstop pulled me into an IM chat not too terribly long ago, so I have met a handful of you folks in that capacity. I'm the guy who actually never did get tired of They Might Be Giants even though I am pushing 30. I am used to catching shit for this, though I still don't really understand it.

martin (mushrush), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't grown tired of TMBG, and I'm pushing, uh, 28. So, welcome.

Everyone is moving to Seattle!

Weeeelll, I’ve been posting on ilm for time under another rather silly name but it got kinda boring so I came out the closet sorta. Never posted on ile until recently and I don’t know why cos it’s great – means I can burn away even more work time than I did before. Never done the Introduce Yourselves thread either before the other day when I did the ilm one. Anyhoows, I figured I’d do this one too.

Heya.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely filling this one out as well, to cover all bases:

Name: Deanna

Location: Texas

Age: 23; going to turn 24 in December

Fav Band: Anything with lots of synthesizers or weird guitar playing, it seems (cf. Ladytron and the Cure, for example). At any length, it's a far too long list to narrow down.

Fav Movie: At the moment it's "Some Kind of Wonderful". Tomorrow it might be "All the President's Men".

Fav TV Show: "Unwrapped" with Marc Summers, though I do love British programming and think the best sitcom ever is "As Time Goes By"

Fav Book: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, The Coming Anarchy by Robert D. Kaplan, Emma by Jane Austen

Fav Actor: Tom Hanks (such a boringly Middle America answer, but he's the only actor whom I will sit through anything to see)

Fav Actress: Helen Hunt (once again, maybe it's boring Middle America, but I do really like her work)

Fav Food: Asian (esp Chinese & Japanese), Italian, spicy, home cooking

Fav Sport: I used to be a tennis player when I was younger, so I like tennis. Purely spectator-wise, I like basketball.

Fav Athlete: Of the moment, it would have to be Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs) and the Williams sisters. Of all time, it would have to be Martina Navratilova, Charles Barkley, and David Robinson.

Drink of Choice: iced tea, cold water, lemonade -- that sort of thing

Drug of Choice (if that's your thing): I'm boringly straitlaced, though I did smoke for six months back when I was in some hideous telemarketing job. I was in it for eighteen months; it was after a year had passed that I was driven to smoking. Once I quit the job, I quit smoking.

Smoker? : *laughs* See above. I've been clean for three and a half years. Horrid job.

Occupation : I work part-time in payroll at a hospital while I'm going back to school to earn a degree in computer science. As I stated in my ILM introduction, I couldn't find a job for my economics degree. The Federal Reserve isn't exactly a big employer over here.

Do you work out? : Maybe twice a week now. Sad, isn't it?

On a scale from 1-10 how would you rate your looks? : 0, although others might say differently. It depends. What do you rate the TV chef Rachael Ray? I've been told many times I look like her. (What I would give to look like TV chef Nigella Lawson, though.)

On a scale from 1-10 how would you rate your personality? : On a good day, 9. On a bad day, 1.

Add anything you want people to know: I don't bite. I've learned quite a bit from the short time I've been here. Thanks to certain posters, I am now actively seeking out techno recordings, Killing Joke songs, and more obscure stuff to like. Danke.

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...

I'm a long time lurker; been here for years. I used to post a little bit but then found I had nothing to say really. I'm also too lazy to log in to post a sentence that someone had already typed using different words. I know, click of the mouse, but I can never remember my password and it turns into a big log in drama. I was drunkish last night reading the hairy women thread and really wanted all of you to know how much you entertain me. In my state I couldn't log in but the thought stuck with me through this morning. So... THANKS! Most of you are very witty and clever and opinionated and playful. You make great reading material for someone with a short attention span.

I did not go :( :( :( :( I really wanted to and psyched myself up for it then I got screwed by my bank leaving me with less than the $40 needed for the ticket and I was not paid until the day after! So he's in my tops of the moment, but only because I was getting ready to see him :( I bet it was amazing, though? I am looking at flickrs as we speak.

Will M., Thursday, 7 June 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Making this the 2nd year I planned to do Mutek things and failed... last year was due to shyness, coincidentally! although I did go to... whatever that thing was with ESG and Ferenc! It was pretty amazing.

Will M., Thursday, 7 June 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

ah well :( i went to saturday's piknic with audion et al - was fun, good, interesting sounds - and went to thurs night show of colleen + hauschka, which was pretty mindblowing - i did both these things alone and i am kinda shy! music/shows is a shyness alleviator though, i think (also, mutek fest is kinda loner central, which i kinda like)

I completely disagree re: shows being shyness alleviators. Even when I am with friends I get REALLY self-conscious/shy/freaked out at shows! Perhaps part of the reason that I see so few (the other reason that I never hear about the good ones until it is too late)

Dude was a punk, that's what he was. And Belgium/Flanders/Walloons is always a love/hate thing for us lot here.

Hey PB . . . thank you! That said, RS may be a harsh judge but he's a pretty great husband so I think I'll keep him around for a while. ;-) Also, I don't want to even imagine what that poll thread could turn into.

Local Garda, Saturday, 7 March 2009 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

Been here eight years as well, which is shocking. I'm now in my thirties and was then in my twenties. URGH.

"Smoker?: Four years clean."

Alex, you still a non-smoker! Congrats. I have this really fucked up way of thinking the people I love/like are all smokers (waves at Sunny). They aren't necessarily, I just see my mates as smokers. haha How fucked up is that? Discovered last night my friend was a smoker before so I wanted to high five myself.

I am trying to enjoy the fact I can resist my smoking urges but it's hard. My husband flatly refused to give me a cigarette yesterday. I told him he was an asshole. haha
