I'd go and see the Yale collection of musical instruments.

Newhaven?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 27 February 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't forget to bring mace; the place is crawling with degenerates (ie, Yalies).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 February 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Hometown of one of my all-time favorite bands EVAH...the two...the only...THE BROTHERS WEEN!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

The Yale art museum is pretty neat; I spent an afternoon there and wasn't bored. I second seeing the musical instruments.

I actually like New Haven a lot more than most do. The walk from the train station to campus is scary, especially at night. I've taken cabs even though it's about a mile. But the campus itself is very nice in a scary-gothic sort of way (lots of strange basements in the dorms, semisecret passageways and so on).

What's the name of that great breakfast place, it's really tiny and famous, just across the street from the campus bookstore? It's a N.H. institution and as I recall they have good milkshakes.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Also the movie theater on that same block is great.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're big on Catholicism, you could check out the various Knights of Columbus stuff downtown. I think they have a museum.

hstencil, Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Food suggestions please!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh, Nickalicious? Wrong New Haven. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Louis' Lunch is kind of neat. Still trying to remember the name of that other place. There is lots of good pizza in NH.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it called the Doodle? And what's better for Pizza, Sally's or Pepy's?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm actually getting my New Haven geography all mixed up. And there's no one to correct me at the moment. Isn't the movie theater nearer to the Au Bon Pain?

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sitting with my back toward a Yalie right now but I don't feel like asking her!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

NO MARY DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON THE YALIE SHE'S GOT A KNIFE!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

eek!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Pepe's pizza way better than Sally's, myself. If I recall correctly, Pepe's has a huge line out the door, but at least it's first come-first serve. Sally's (unless they've expanded and/or changed their rules), you wait forever, and if people made a reservation, they can walk ahead of you with a shit-eating grin on their face.

Or you could just skip Wooster St. totally and head for Moderne's (line is still out the door, though), which is also pretty tasty and has its share of fans.

Louis Lunch kicks ass. Richters is a pub where you can get yards.

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

1. The Yankee Doodle is the breakfast place across from what used to be the Yale Co-op but is not...Barnes and Noble
2. Sally's
3. Mory's
4. Yale Center for British Art
5. Yale Art Gallery
6. Jonathan Edwards dining hall
7. Freshman Commons
8. The Anchor Bar: "no oars on the ceiling, just whores on the floor."
9. Mia's for sushi
10. The L&B room in Sterling Library

Skottie, Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

not=now

Skottie, Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes: the Yankee Doodle! Thankee!

Every campus bookstore is Barnes & Noble now I guess. (sniff)

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks all...keep 'em coming! So...breakfast at the Doodle, lunch at Louis' and dinner at Pepe's.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Mory's ... this was made famous by Salinger's Franny no?

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh where is that then -- I'll have to throw that in.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Next door to Toad's Place, behind the library.

Skottie, Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Hometown of one of my all-time favorite bands EVAH...the two...the only...THE BROTHERS WEEN!!!

eh? the brothers ween are from New Hope, Pennsylvania; not New Haven, Connecticut.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 28 February 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh but wait we need to go to Sickler's favored among the intellectual fringe of students and steer away from Mort's and Cronin's.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been to the Doodle twice, I think. At least once, my silverware was dirty and I could have sworn there was soap in my orange juice.

I can't wait to go back.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Mory's ... this was made famous by Salinger's Franny no?

Perhaps also referenced in Tom Lehrer's "Bright College Days"?

"To the tables down at Mory's,
(wherever that may be),
let us drink a toast to those we love the best.
We will sleep through all the lectures,
and cheat on all the exams,
and we'll pass...and be forgotten with the rest..."

Joe (Joe), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I found the Mort but not Mory ref. in Salinger.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What does Salinger call the restaurant where Franny goes with her boyfriend and then discovers-- (I don't want to spoil anything for anyone)?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

NO MARY DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON THE YALIE SHE'S GOT A KNIFE!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(this is esp. funny since the Yalies I knew were among the meekest people I have met in my life)

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(a Yale prof was stabbed to death on campus in the 80s)

Whereas at some other schools the students just kill their roommates.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

like that one chick at Harvard who stabbed her roommate?

hstencil, Friday, 28 February 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the one called Sickler's and they drink martinis and her date eats frog legs and she has a chicken sandwich. Is that restaurant around?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

h: That's whom I had in mind.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Sickler's may have been a stand-in for Mory's, but I could be totally wrong as I don't recall where I heard that.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Well in any case it's always fun to go to an old diner and pretend you're in a Salinger story. (NB: This explains the Wes Anderson ouevre.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Mary could stay in NEw York and go to Grand Central and do that.

Friends don't let friends visit New Haven.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Mary could stay in New York and go to Grand Central and do that.

Friends don't let friends visit New Haven.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I repeat. I have been reading too many (too many) telexes.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, that could work. Sickler's is a strange name for a rest. I hope we don't run into any of those "Sarah Lawrence-Bennington types."

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Boy, if you think New Haven is bad, try visiting some of the other towns on the bus route from NY to Middletown, Connecticut. Meriden and Bridgeport, f'rinstance.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mory's is known to me only for the Whiffenpoofs song Joe quoted and I'm okay with that.

I think all the small towns in Connecticut are really nice and all the "cities" really suck.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

We can take the ferry to Bridgeport! (Am. what's your CT connection?)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm mostly joking anyway. I'm sure the Centre for British Art is very nice.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary: ...

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll bring you a postcard - make sure not to send this one away:)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone besides me know that old Folkways record where feminist collectives from New Haven and Chicago play terrible blues rawk?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The only New Haven bands I can think of are the Saucers and Dumptruck, but those are a long time gone and there must be several thousand others.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Artie Shaw's from NH.

There were lots of New Haven doo wop groups, but um I'm forgetting the names.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh! New Haven is home to crap like Miracle Legion and the Butterflies of Love. Reason alone to destroy it!

I don't like New Haven, even though my mum went to Yale and I spent 3 years coming up with excuses not to have to visit her. ;-)

kate, Friday, 28 February 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

To be fair my affection for New Haven is all tied up in nostalgia of the most unhealthy kind.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Do tell . . .

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe not "most unhealty." Just plain old unhealthy. Er, nothing interesting, I shouldn't have teased.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

does it involve bondage and co-eds?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, I haven't thought about Dumptruck for a while.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The only interesting story I have about New Haven involves my car getting busted into while attending a rock shoe at Yale. Noting that I've never visited any of the museums around the campus says more about me being a lazy boob than about the city sucking ass.

But, yeah, there's ... stuff. (And the movie theatre is right next to the Barnes & Noble co-op, isn't it?)

New Haven bands worth a damn right about now = I dunno. Once upon a time, there was 33.3 and the One AM Radio, but they skedaddled / reconfigured (and, while I like them both plenty, they aren't very "rocking") (the Positive-Negative Men rocked in a sub-Devo way, but damned if I know what happened to them) (& there was that rockin' post-rock quartet that used to be called Cassius, but renamed). Kate has no right to slag off the Butterflies or Miracle Legion, though.

And note that the best small towns to visit in CT (from what I can gather) are found on the borders of the state, or thereabouts.

The Doodle

Mary (Mary), Monday, 20 October 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

How do I get from the train station to the campus (walking)? Should I just ask a nice Yalie to show me the way?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 20 October 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

State Street Station (one of two) is at 259 State Street between Chapel and Court Streets. This map suggests that you walk (West?) on Chapel 2 blocks and hit the Green, and two blocks more gets you the Quad.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 20 October 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Gabnab you are a prince. A nob. That should lead right to both of the art musuems on Chapel St. (which are of course closed on Mon.) leading me to put off my trip a bit longer.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 20 October 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Take a cab from the train station to the Old Campus or to Cross Campus (named for someone named "Cross" not because it forms a cross in the middle of the campus). The walk from the station is depressing and a waste of energy and not a great idea at night. In the daytime it's fine, but it will just make you want to turn around and get back on the train.

No one's mentioned Grove Street Cemetery, totally cool, spooky graveyard with the motto on the gate, "The Dead Shall Be Raised." Referring to the Grateful Dead, of course, depending on whom you ask. You may not be able to get into the cemetery anymore, but it's worth a climb over the wall!

Walk through Sterling Library. A Cathedral to books.

Mory's is actually a private eating club--even though it tastes like a diner. You probably wouldn't have much trouble getting someone to take you in though, but then they'd have to pay for you because Mory's doesn't take money. Everything goes on an account.

Skottie, Monday, 20 October 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to hear more abou Daver's rock shoe. I imagine the checkered Vans popularized by Sean Penn in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 October 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Alas it is true I mistakenly attributed home-town status of the brothers Ween to New Haven when they are in New Hopeites. Blaspheme!

REVIVE!

I'm posting this right now from Sterling Library, about to go find some of that famous NH pizza after a dizzying number of hours poring over old letters in loopy handwriting. This library truly is a cathedral to books (and manuscripts, which is why I'm here).

FAB? Anyone fancy a breakfast? Meet me at The Doodle at 8 a.m. (sharp!) tomorrow morning (Thursday)!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Maria! I'm your husband! I would eat breakfast with you, but I'm on an island with the baby. We ogled girls gone wild at the beach all day. Or, um, I did. Rufus just sat in the stroller. Speaking of Geronimo's skull, too bad you probably won't have time to hang out at Sachem's Head. You could say hello to my sister and all my other dead relatives. Love you. Don't hurt your eyes reading too much.

I gave up on Sally's after waiting at least an hour (the line at Pepe's was even longer) and settled for Yorkside, which was in no way disappointing, perhaps qualified by my hunger level. How do others rank it among the second tier places?

The walk there is kind of long, taking you across the West River, which looks rather nice in the dark, but the 80-year-old home of the New Haven County Cutters is a pretty great destination.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 August 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in New HAven on Saturday at Ikea. I bought a coffee table.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the only pizza i had at new haven was at a place where the drunken owner kept making passes at my friends by saying, "hey, if the dude you with is gay, maybe you guys come over here." but he gave us free pizza.

i've been dreaming about new haven a lot lately. i miss it.

|||| (amateurist), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I gave up on Sally's after waiting at least an hour (the line at Pepe's was even longer) and settled for Yorkside, which was in no way disappointing, perhaps qualified by my hunger level. How do others rank it among the second tier places?

Yorkside--haven't been there in years, but hung out there lots of times back in the late 80s during my high school years. Food wise--like you said, it'll be adequate if you're hungry--but pizza-wise it's not in the same league as the 'heavies' previously mentioned (Pepe's, Moderne's, Sally's, etc.) Their fried mozz is pretty good, though...

Anybody here old enough to remember the really good ol' days of New Haven? The 'twin' department stores Malley's and Macy's? When the Chapel Square Mall was not only alive, but actually thriving with business? The depressing Demery's on the corner of Broadway (now there's an Au Bon Pain there--definitely a trade-up)? :)

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

I never went :(

There are two museums you should visit. It is important not to get them confused, as I did once when speaking with the curator of one who I thought was the curator of the other. The Yale Center for British Art is widely acclaimed. http://ycba.yale.edu/information/ The Yale University Art Gallery http://artgallery.yale.edu/ is I believe Edward Hermann took the lovely Rory on that infamous campus visit episode. I am seriously considering makign a trip back to NY so I can take the Metro North New Haven.

I know nothing about collegiate clubs, and neither, dear Gabbneb, should you.

Peabody's Museum has the classic Dinosaur Mural:

http://www.peabody.yale.edu/explore/reptiles_00.html

A few years ago, I went there for the first time since I was a kid. Kind of disappointing, as when I was a kid it seemed like the Smithsonian, and when you go there as an adult, you see how piss-small the museum really is.

Still, the Dinosaur Mural kicks ass...

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Other sites of interest:

Sleeping Giant Park (named because it really DOES look like a sleeping giant--you can see it in the distance from the highway traveling north on I-91) is good for a hike:

http://www.sgpa.org/

Or you could see the Soldiers & Sailors Monument atop East Rock:

http://cityofnewhaven.com/parks/parks/eastrockpark.htm

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

And you might also be able to see asphalted Pintos at what remains of the Ghost Parking Lot, situated in the Hamden Plaza. I think there were still some there when I last checked, though it is a shadow of what it used to be

http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/CTHAMparking.html

Wouldn't make it an all-day trip, of course. Of course, Hamden Plaza used to be a veritable treasure trove of "art" displays (read: conceptually wacky eyesores).

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
At the Yale Center for British Art there's a canvas by Turner with the background light painted in and studies of clouds by Constable. I love these preliminary unfinished things. The building is fabulous as well, especially the huge windows, from inside and outside. The pink marble windows of Beinecke Library are also wonderful, but it was raining on the morning that I was there. I've heard that it's even better with the light streaming through.

The next time I go, I'm going to look at the Yale collection of musical instruments.

According to this, Franny and Lane meet "at what must be Princeton."

youn, Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

There's Firehouse 12, which is supposedly a good place to head if you like free jazz and experimental music. Of course, I know virtually nothing else about it.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

i like unfinished paintings too, especially when the artist has marked in the unfinished portion with pencil to indicate the contours.

whenever i picture new haven, i picture it with rain. i think most of the times i was there, it was raining. or maybe just the most memorable times.

Fiery Furnaces are playing at Toad's Place on February 10. I think I will go to this.

youn, Friday, 13 January 2006 01:14 (twenty years ago)

Yay. And Ted Leo and his Pharmacists are playing toads on Sun March 5!! And Edith Frost is playing BAR Feb 19, which may or may not be something I want to attend.

New Haven is becoming quite the happening burg! What is going on?

Yay. And Ted Leo and his Pharmacists are playing toads on Sun March 5!! And Edith Frost is playing BAR Feb 19, which may or may not be something I want to attend.

New Haven is becoming quite the happening burg! It is very disorienting.

stewart downes (sdownes), Friday, 13 January 2006 01:39 (twenty years ago)

goddamn it.

stewart downes (sdownes), Friday, 13 January 2006 01:39 (twenty years ago)

BAR is a bit uncomfortable when waiting for a table, but is great once you're seated (for pizza). I love the windows (which look out on Louis' Lunch).

I am planning on going to Toad's on Feb. 6, work allowing. Though the same act (shh) is playing NYC a week later.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 13 January 2006 01:50 (twenty years ago)

you are intriguing me with all your mysterious talk.

stewart downes (sdownes), Friday, 13 January 2006 02:20 (twenty years ago)

Someone at work who has lived in New Haven for over 20 years tells me that some local business owners are resentful of Yale because, as a non-profit, it doesn't have to pay property tax. I guess the reasons for decline here are much broader than that, but, on occasion, I've felt that I should go to local shops within walking distance, even though the prices they charge seem unreasonably high. I went to Greg's Tailor Shop today. I think he had a certificate up in Cyrillic. Maybe it was for a tailoring competition in Russia. (Or maybe this is just the effect of having watched White.)

youn, Monday, 16 January 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Did they demolish the Coliseum yet?

Joe (Joe), Monday, 16 January 2006 21:47 (twenty years ago)

I mean blow it up, of course. I know they've already excavated it...

Joe (Joe), Monday, 16 January 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

If the Coliseum is on the way to the train station, I think they have. Anyway, there's lots of rubble. And maybe exposed connectors.

youn, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Who cares about the 6th? Its all about the 7th. WU-TANG. WU-TANG. I don't care if Sun Ra rose from the dead and played Toad's, Wu-Tang will shit on it.

I'm going to visit my friend. I'm sure she'll have tons for us to do but idk if there are any "must sees". Guess not?

kanellos (gbx), Monday, 13 December 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)

i want to marry a pizza

kanellos (gbx), Monday, 13 December 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)

well stevie I like going to the peabody museum. if the weather is nice you can walk up to east rock park and camp out. uhmm rudy's has great 'belgian' fries. the pizza at B.A.R. is pretty good and they brew their own beer. hmm what else

deej me how to whiney (dayo), Monday, 13 December 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

the music library @ sml is a nice piece of architecture. the A&A building is kinda cool and neat to visit, so is the beinecke.

there are probably some cooler places off campus, like in the southern part of the city, but I didn't do much exploring so *shrug*

deej me how to whiney (dayo), Monday, 13 December 2010 00:39 (fifteen years ago)

Pepe's (?) restaurant is supposed to have the best pizza anywhere. I've been there and it doesn't really compare to some of the best places here in north NJ/NYC, but worth checking out anyway. Definitely check out B.A.R. as dayo said... Lots of neat other bars and restaurants on the southern and east sides of the city.

I will always think of you, while (quite) fondly, myself (Evan), Monday, 13 December 2010 03:05 (fifteen years ago)

yeah pepe's and sally's are the standard 'bring tourists here' pizza places.

overrated: louis lunch, it's just a burger in between two pieces of white bread iirc.

stay away from: all those thai restuarants

deej me how to whiney (dayo), Monday, 13 December 2010 03:07 (fifteen years ago)

Rudy's is not an option until they reopen in their new location on Chapel.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Monday, 13 December 2010 03:10 (fifteen years ago)

Bar or Modern for pizza. Stay away from Pepe's and Sally's. Avoid the overrated Claire's. Cafe Romeo, in East Rock, has better veggie options. we finally got a decent gastropub, Kelly's. How one little city can have so many mediocre Thai restaurants is a question for the ages. but Thali Too, near the campus bookstore, offers good, cheap South Indian eats. Take a campus tour, if you can. The Yale architecture really is something. Oh, and bundle up. We're in for a wet, cold week.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Monday, 13 December 2010 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

^^ booming post

just struck me that the most appropriate analogy to describe sally and pepe's is that they are the geno's and pat's of new haven

deej me how to whiney (dayo), Monday, 13 December 2010 03:27 (fifteen years ago)

Haha I liked those thai restaurants!

I will always think of you, while (quite) fondly, myself (Evan), Monday, 13 December 2010 04:29 (fifteen years ago)

Well the one or two I frequented..

I will always think of you, while (quite) fondly, myself (Evan), Monday, 13 December 2010 04:29 (fifteen years ago)

And all I get is Pad thai usually.

I will always think of you, while (quite) fondly, myself (Evan), Monday, 13 December 2010 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

Stevie, the one gay bar in NH my ex took me to about 8 years ago was hor-rib-ble. I wonder if anything's changed.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 December 2010 05:28 (fifteen years ago)

I assume you guys were here for school?

Even our Thai places can't mess up Pad Thai too terribly, but they're uniformly average, for the most part. Thai Awesome, out in Hamden, is probably the best of the lot. The best deal in town, though, has to be the food-cart food court outside of Yale-New Haven Hospital. It's like a culinary mini-UN, and you can stuff yourself silly for less than a tenner. The carts near the Yale Whale will also due in a pinch.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Monday, 13 December 2010 05:29 (fifteen years ago)

Nope, Partners is still the pits. There's a cute bar and grill on York (166?) that flies it's rainbow flag proudly and is a much better bet. Killer meatloaf!

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Monday, 13 December 2010 05:30 (fifteen years ago)

yeh, for school. lol, the rumor used to be that my college master's husband was a regular at partners. I used to go to the burrito cart a lot but I got terrible food poisoning from it once, plus I think it closed down when roomba did because it was part of roombas... not sure

deej me how to whiney (dayo), Monday, 13 December 2010 05:42 (fifteen years ago)

Roomba's no more. The burrito carts carry on, but I'm not a fan. What's with the slaw? Whole Enchilada on Whitney has new management and some damn good burritos, sans slaw. BTW, Roomba successor Bespoke passed into other hands. The Camachos opened a very high-end restaurant in Branford. Haven't tried it yet. Sounds amazing.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Monday, 13 December 2010 06:06 (fifteen years ago)

have you been to ibiza? it was the one restaurant I felt regret about not eating at while I was there

deej me how to whiney (dayo), Monday, 13 December 2010 06:08 (fifteen years ago)

also I heard miya's is now only serving sustainable sushi, good on 'em. though I was never really a fan of the place, too overpriced for what it was

deej me how to whiney (dayo), Monday, 13 December 2010 06:09 (fifteen years ago)

Bun Lai is batshit, in the best possible way. Miya's has gone not just sustainable, but as local as possible. his latest kick seems to be finding creative uses for invading species, both animal and vegetable. but, yeah, the restaurant is well outside of my current starvation budget. no more Ride the Wild Donkey Rolls for me, at least for a while. everyone should look up Miya's menu. it's a trip.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Monday, 13 December 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

re: Ibiza. just once, ages ago. IIRC it lived up to the hype, but so did the three-figure bill. did celebrate a B-Day at rival Barcelona a couple of years ago, and it was just as good (and nearly as pricey, though i was spared that bullet). the Ibiza owners opened a tapas place in Hamden that i've been meaning to check out. it's supposed to be (a little) more reasonable.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Monday, 13 December 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

Greetings from New Haven

PS Claires Corner Coupia-- not actually all that awesome!

monday...? (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

nope, not even a little bit awesome. i don't get the universal raves about her Lithuanian coffee cake, either. it's like a roofing shingle. if you need to veg out, try Elaine's Healthy Choice, just up the street from Broadway. Jamaican vegan fare. funky, cheap, and tasty. welcome to town, btw!

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

Okay so what are everyones recommendations w/r/t:

a) museums
b) cool/divey bars
c) cool quirky things to see
d) maybe nice places to buy things

chewwwsday (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

A. Yale British Art Museum and Yale University Art Gallery are across the street from one another. Don't expect the MoMA, but that should fill a few hours pleasantly. Have lunch at Atticus bookstore and cafe. Get the black bean soup and a bread sampler, an Aztec chocolate brownie if you have room

The Beinecke Rare Book Room and Sterling Library will scratch any bibliophile's itch. Some incredible items on display at both.

The Peabody Museum of Natural History is just a walk from the Green, down Church and Whitney. Small, but worth visiting for the Great Hall of Dinosaurs and for the Native American exhibits. Nice local flora/fauna dioramas and a fun Gift Shop, too.

If the Yale Museum of Rare Instruments is open, that's also fun.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

check out the uh...manuscripts room at sml? only open during odd hours

dayo, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

stevie for real though there's been a lot of great posts itt already

dayo, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

B. Not a barfly, but Richter's (Chapel & College), Anna Liffey's (Whitney), Café Nine (250 State), and Yale's own after-hours GPSY (Park?) are some of the more popular local watering holes. i think the infamous Rudy's is still in transition, unfortunately. For something classier (and some incredible mixology), look for the swank 166 Crown and Firehouse 12. Pick up an Advocate, and scan the music listings. There's usually something worth seeing.

Hula Hanks or any of the other Crown St. Clubs if yr rilly looking to slum it. BAR brews some dece beer, but 16 Prime is the best tap room in town. Great burgers, too.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

C. hmm. Sterling Library plaza has a Calder and a Noguchi to ogle. But your best bet is just to walk around the adjacent Greens, wander over to the Ninth Square area (just between the City Hall and big bank buildings). see if you can find Artspace and nearby Bentara, our best (and only) Malaysian restaurant.

If you're up for more of a walk, c'mon down Whitney, past Yale, to East Rock. pretty and peaceful. with some great gourmet shops and a rather nice park. But that's my nabe, so i may be biased. The New Haven Historical Society is on the way, as is the arty Audubon St. area. More galleries - and a killer music (sheet, not recorded) store, Foundry Music.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

D. What are you looking for? http://i54.tinypic.com/1j14s2.jpg's, overpriced and understocked, is sadly the only record shop here. They have been ramping up their used vinyl section, so that could kill a few hours. Around the corner is the cool, quirky Labyrinth Books. A few more hours to be whiled away there, though they're not cheap. Most of the nice-things shopping is done on Chapel (Wave Gallery, that Lotsa Villages chain place), Broadway (Yale-fortified B&N, UO, etc), but there are some sweet shops along Whitney. It's not much of a shopping town, i'm afraid. There is a fun vintage clothing store at the corner of Whitney and Trumbull. and the cheese-and-charcuterie boutique, Caeseus.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

Odd, that embedded link should just say "http://i54.tinypic.com/1j14s2.jpg's" which you know already, prolly.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

ok srsly wtf, ipod?

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, two more recommended stops along Chapel: Group W Bench, a head shop crammed with curious goods, and our lone used book shop, the Book Trader. Some amazing stuff often turns up at the latter.

silent ouzo eclipse (Mr. Hal Jam), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

Oooh! The several Asian markets on Whitney and Orange are totally worth yr time. The expected assortment of crazy candies and off-the-wall drinks to browse. You won't leave empty handed.

is it wednesday? (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 16 December 2010 01:13 (fifteen years ago)

I probably take the shopping Mecca of Universal Drive for granted, but i'm not sure what makes it different from any other commercial strip-mall hellsprawl. i would never put it on a visitor's agenda. Haha. If i may ask, where are you coming from? Sounds like you're enjoying the sites and the sights during your stay. And, yay! You made it to Elaine's! :-D
