IF YOU ARE FROM THE GREATER PROVIDENCE AREA WE CAN TALK ABOUT STUFF LIKE WHERE H.P. LOVECRAFT'S GRAVE IS IN SWAN POINT AND ABOUT THE TRAIN TUNNEL AND STUFF.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 3 March 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Brown is the ILX university, that is, if everyone on ILX had to decide on one uni to go to, no exceptions, I'd bet Brown would be the choice (though I'm sure I'm too dumb and poor to go there myself).

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 3 March 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh, I drove through there once. That's all I have to say.

PINK AND BROWN STARTED IN SF IN 1997 (POST-LANDED).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 March 2003 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

really? I thought they lived here for a while.... I was not living INRI for a while though and frankly didn't have much contact with that whole scene when I was younger.

I was always under the impression that Pink&Brown moved to SF after the 2001 Summer tour with Lightning Bolt? Though I could be totally wrong. I know they both lived in Providence for a while thought.

Dave Fischer, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, this is offensive...

Dave Fischer, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, Mr. Fischer. That was offensive. And depressing. And a bit scary. Kind of like that whole "Hell House" phenomena. (Though I did get some really good laughs when, in the documentary, they were arguing about the name of that "date rape drug" and noone could recall its name. That was pathetic. And funny.)

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 04:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Sengai, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I've spent all of one day in Providence. Brown was kind of nice but large and nondescript. Downtown was like a studio set of "New York" - old-looking but generic narrow urban streets, bright lighting, entirely devoid of people.

one night in high school me and three friends decided in that high school way to drive all the way to the tip of cape cod--we stopped over in providence and were just fucking starving and couldnt find anywhere to eat and we just turned the corner near city ahll and holy shit if there wasnt this motherfucking diner on wheels just sitting there gleaming like god had heard our thoughts and said, bros, no worries, ive got just the thing for you... years later i found out that this was a providence "thing" but at the time it was unbelievable

most hilarious pvd mayor = buddy c1anc1. he's a felon, but he's our felon!

current mayor is david c1c1lline, not as good for the lulz as buddy but he's the first openly gay mayor of a US state capitol so that's pretty cool

c1cilline just got in a big brouhaha - PVD is hosting the national mayors conference, obama was scheduled to attend but pulled out cuz there's a union dispute / picket line going on

there's a lot of metal in pvd! did you vote in the metal subgenre poll?

鬼の手 (Edward III), Saturday, 13 June 2009 01:02 (sixteen years ago)

I did not (I'm a little inconsistent in my ILX habits) but I just had to go look for it...very nice! My vote would've been for Viking, which I'm glad to see had its supporters, followed by death and folk. Tell me about the Providence metal scene!

Maria, Saturday, 13 June 2009 02:23 (sixteen years ago)

most of the local metal bands exist on some black/doom/drone/stoner/grind continuum. I'm not a huge metal fan but some locals I like are suffering bastard, the body, I destroyer, haxen, bog of the infidel, howl, st jude.

it can get kind of frustrating when touring bands skip RI because they don't think it's a big enough market, but wolves in the throne room, deicide, kylesa, and kreig have been here in the past couple of months.

T.O.M.B. is playing next week, and I'm looking forward to bone awl tomorrow night...

btw the tacqueria pacifica to which elmo refers is a part of AS220. if you haven't been to pvd in years, AS220 has changed its setup so you can hang out in the bar/restaurant without paying admission to the performance space which is pretty cool imo.

I had no idea you all offered legalized prostiution:

RI tries _ again _ to outlaw indoor prostitution
RAY HENRY
Associated Press Writer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The undercover police officer paid $60 to enter the Midori Spa just blocks from City Hall. A massage therapist rubbed the officer's back, then simulated a sex act with her right hand.

"You want more?" Myong Kim asked, explaining it would cost an extra $20.

"Next time," officer Scott McGregor said, according to court documents, then walked out. A short while later, the woman and five other people were arrested in a prostitution sting.

This encounter would be an open-and-shut prostitution case in any other state besides parts of Nevada. But in Rhode Island, a legal loophole allows sex for cash, if it's done in private. The women in the Midori case were acquitted.

Now there is a push to close the loophole created by a legislative mistake 30 years ago.

Gov. Don Carcieri joined a women's studies professor, clergy, law enforcement and others Thursday to press the state Senate to pass legislation that would make any prostitution illegal. The measure, which would effectively shut down the so-called massage parlors and spas that proliferate in Rhode Island, passed the House last month.

"It's absurd," Carcieri said at a Statehouse news conference. "The message we're sending to young women in terms of exploiting themselves for any kind of financial gain, I think, frankly, is disgusting."

Senate President M. Teresa Paiva-Weed said lawmakers need to address the loophole but wouldn't comment on specific legislation that tries to close it.

Rhode Island's loophole went mostly unnoticed until Providence police raided several spas in 2003, including the now-defunct Midori, and then lost their cases in court because of the loophole. Police can arrest prostitutes operating on street corners, but they struggle to make charges stick against those operating indoors because the current law — passed when street prostitution was rampant — specifies outdoor solicitation.

Since then, lawmakers repeatedly have tried — and failed — to change the law but faced opposition from civil libertarians, advocates for sex workers and even the state chapter of the National Organization for Women. They say permitting the arrest of prostitutes could end up punishing human trafficking victims.

They doubt these trafficking victims — mostly Asian — will be candid with police after a raid, and they say a criminal record could make it more difficult for prostitutes to leave the sex industry.

"We would never arrest a domestic violence victim in the hope we could get her to cooperate against her abuser," said Andrea Ritchie, director of the Sex Workers Project at the Urban Justice Center in New York, who has lobbied against the bill.

Rep. Joanne Giannini, who sponsored the legislation to close the loophole, argues many of the women who work in the Rhode Island sex shops are coerced victims of human trafficking. Without a stronger prostitution law, police lack the tools to intervene.

"We're going to become a safe haven for the sex industry," she said. "I don't think that Rhode Island should have this dubious distinction."

All states beside Rhode Island and Nevada have laws forbidding the solicitation of prostitution, although police and prosecutors have discretion over how to enforce them, said Ron Weitzer, a sociology professor who studies the subject at George Washington University.

Some police departments tacitly operate under the Rhode Island model, only targeting prostitutes and customers who become a nuisance in public.

"If they publicized it, for one thing, they'd get criticized by the public, the media or politicians for not enforcing the laws against indoor prostitution," Weitzer said. "Or it might lead to an influx of indoor workers into a particular city."

Giannini's bill would give police discretion in making arrests and includes specific protections that allow human trafficking victims to be acquitted by arguing they were threatened, restrained or had their immigration papers stolen.

Those changes have not satisfied the state branch of the National Organization for Women or the Rhode Island Commission on Women, which withdrew its support. The commission wants a guarantee that trafficking victims won't be charged in the first place, said Shanna Wells, the commission's director.

"You're arresting her and she'd have to go through this whole legal process before she could even defend herself," Wells said.

Rhode Island's current prostitution laws are the consequence of a 30-year-old legislative accident.

In 1976, a group called Call Off Your Old, Tired Ethics — or COYOTE — filed a lawsuit arguing the state cannot ban purely private sexual activity between adults, even if money is involved. The group also claimed that police were unfairly targeting women prostitutes while largely ignoring their male customers.

The disputed statute was so restrictive that a federal judge found it could potentially ban even some forms of consensual sex between adults.

Around the same time, residents in the West End of Providence complained to police that outdoor prostitution was so rampant that customers were randomly soliciting women on the street. So legislation was passed that outlawed only paid sex and cracked down on those making solicitations outside.

A federal judge who later analyzed the statute ruled it also had the effect of decriminalizing indoor prostitution.

Former House Speaker Matthew J. Smith said lawmakers never meant to draw a distinction between indoor and outdoor prostitution. Even so, he wants state lawmakers to eliminate any ambiguity.

"There's no choice," Smith said. "We're the laughing stock of the country."

In the years since, spas sprouted in Rhode Island's urban communities and a few suburban ones, too. Their advertisements run alongside those for strip clubs and adult stores and offer services described as "body shampoo," ''table shower" or "relaxing body rub."

Other notices are less subtle: "Hot Asian Girls!"

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 19 June 2009 00:17 (sixteen years ago)

that's a fascinating accident. not sure what to thin about it, especially the trafficing angle....

So I got this totally wacked out french cinema gender theory book at that symposium books downtown, it just kills me how academic writing gets to be completely unreadable..
Eg studies confirming the "increasingly influential claim that all Cocteau's work is the performance of an ascetic and victim perpetually condemned to abortive encounters with the Unknown, and thus to produce work founded on masochistic obstinacy." It just gets weirder from there.

remy bean, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

Maria, that's pretty much the neighboorhood I grew up in. I'm guessing you're towards the Pawtucket end of the Boulevard? You can tell people that you live on the East Side. There's not a lot of nightlife over there, but you're close enough to main roads & bus routes to make getting around easy enough. The East Side is pretty bike-friendly, if that matters to you.

There are two supermarkets past the south end of the Boulevard: Eastside Marketplace and a miniature WholeFoods. You're probably within walking distance of the commercial strip on Hope St, which has some decent eats -- Hope St Pizza is pretty good, as is Apsara Palace for your Asian food needs. At the north end of the Boulevard you can find the Garden Grille, which is a decent if slightly limited limited vegetarian eatery. Chez Pascal close by has been getting some good write-ups lately but I haven't been.

Pawtucket has a bad rep but there's some stuff going on -- check out Cafe Lila at The Grant building, which also houses a bunch of artist studios and other independent businesses. And elsewhere on Main St is Machines With Magnets which is a pretty happening recording studio / gallery space / music venue.

That's what I got right now -- if I think of anything else I'll post it here.

Today, Saturday, July 11 6:30a to 8:00p
at AS220, Providence, RI

Until the Light Takes Us is a feature length documentary chronicling the history, ideology and aesthetic of Norwegian black metal - a musical subculture infamous as much for a series of murders and church arsons as it is for its unique musical and visual aesthetics. This is the first (and only) film to truly shed light on a movement that has heretofore been shrouded in darkness and rumor and obscured by inaccurate and shallow depictions

Minors in R.I. can be strippers

09:28 AM EDT on Tuesday, July 21, 2009

By Amanda Milkovits

Journal Staff Writer

Your turn: Do you think 16 and 17 is too young to be a stripper?

Extra: Behind closed doors: How R.I. decriminalized prostitution

PROVIDENCE –– Rhode Island teens under 18 can’t work with power saws or bang nails up on roofs.

But dance at strip clubs? Sure. Just as long as the teens submit work permits, and are off the stripper’s pole by 11:30 on school nights.

It’s enough to surprise even those in America’s mecca of striptease and sin –– Las Vegas.

“Everybody buzzes about ‘Nevada and Sin City, tsk, tsk,’ ” said Edie Cartwright, spokeswoman for the Nevada attorney general’s office. “But we regulate it.”

Providence police recently discovered that teen job opportunities extend into the local adult entertainment world while they were investigating a 16-year-old runaway from Boston. The girl told detectives that she worked at Cheaters strip club this spring, and the police got tips about other underage girls working at another club on Allens Avenue.

That’s when the police found that neither state law, nor city ordinance bars minors from working at strip clubs. Those under 18 can’t buy pornography, and no one may take pictures or film minors in sexually suggestive ways. But the law doesn’t stop underage teens from stripping for money. Even if the police saw underage boys or girls on stage at a strip club, they wouldn’t be able to charge them or the club owners with a crime.

“I’ve been doing this a long time,” said youth services Sgt. Carl Weston, “and I can’t find anything that says it’s illegal for a 16-year-old or a 17-year-old to take her top off and dance.”

one year passes...

I'm planning to road trip down to Providence over Columbus Day weekend. I haven't been there since the late 80s. What should I make sure to see/do? Where to eat? All those other stupid annoying questions people ask when they're going somewhere new.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 23 September 2010 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

at your service, I'd be glad to point you towards some stuff

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 23 September 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

some of my favorite places for eats --

julian's, on broadway - my local, basically. pretty eclectic menu, lots of veg / vegan options and nice beer list. awesome staff. good for dinner -- brunch is good too but gets crowded early.

guido's, on hope street - quintessential italian grandma's kitchen, right down to the floral wallpaper. not the best food ever but laid back, good for a long lingering dinner. cash only, byob.

red stripe, wayland square - i'd recommend for brunch, kind of a french-american bistro. good if you want moules et frites.

la laiterie, wayland square: pricey but amazing & worth it -- as the name suggests it's the restaurant side of a cheesemonger business (who happen to have amazing sandwiches during the day). cheese / chartucerie boards are nice. no reservations for parties under 6 so i'd advise an early dinner here.

thee red fez, downtown: they have poutine! also: mac & cheese / grilled cheese here are great. pretty nice bar upstairs.

avoid: cuban revolution, FOO(D) @ as220, nick's on broadway for brunch

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 23 September 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks! All tips and tricks gladly appreciated.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 23 September 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

hm, what else

local 121, downtown on washington st - skip the restaurant. go directly to the bar (the ground level one aka the speakeasy). beautiful woodwork, stained glass, skilled bartenders. lots of dj nights there, plus events in another basement level bar (aka the tap room).

pro-tip: if you figure out when happy hour is at mccormick & schmick's (beside the bilmore hotel), they have pretty substantial portions on their happy hour bar menu. drink required but a cheap tasty way to fill up.

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 24 September 2010 00:04 (fifteen years ago)

red stripe, wayland square - i'd recommend for brunch, kind of a french-american bistro. good if you want moules et frites.

We've gone there at least twice now and left because the wait was really long. :/ One day we'll make it there.

OTM re Red Fez grilled cheese and mac and cheese. They're both amazing.

la laiterie - Elmo is this the tiny place that is literally connected to the cheese place? Was there last spring and OM f'n G. SO SO GOOD. Had a cheese board while we waited and then can't remember what main but it doesn't matter - everyone's was delicious.

master of retardment (ENBB), Friday, 24 September 2010 11:48 (fifteen years ago)

enbb - yes, that's it! place is amazing!

oh, another new place that is worth the visit: the duck & bunny, on wickenden. the menu consists of crepes (listed with drink pairings), small plates, and cupcakes for dessert. kinda of a cutesy-poo concept but it's good, esp for a date night -- located in the first floor of a house w/ a nice back patio area.

tracer: the rue is still there (tho i've never eaten dinner there!) and haven brothers is eternal.

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 24 September 2010 13:14 (fifteen years ago)

for souvenirs, go to what cheer? antiques on angell @ wayland square (below myopic books). lots of crazy vintage & collectible stuff, ephemera, books, trading cards, kitsch, maps, old photographs, and a nice selection of vinyl in good condition

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 24 September 2010 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

also good for dinner on the west side: broadway bistro, loie fuller, ama's

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 24 September 2010 13:35 (fifteen years ago)

i really wish i could still tell people to go to the decatur in luongo square! r.i.p. ;_;

was a great divey local with a great jukebox & cheap drinks & friendly neighbor doggies.

the bar that now occupies its location is the avery, which is kind of a lounge but it's alright.

around the corner on knight st. is the e&o which opened up after the decatur closed and which inherited a lot of the local business. best place for a beer & a shot of whiskey (tho maybe avoid this if you dislike 'hipsters')

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 24 September 2010 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

if you're visiting on columbus day weekend BE ADVISED that federal hill will be totally insanely busy -- these italian american folks go crazy for columbus.

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 24 September 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

i'll stop there for now but if there's any particular activity you're into let me know -- if yr looking for live shows e_3 is the guy to ask imo

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 24 September 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

Gotcha on the crazy and thanks to all! I have some friends in the West Side (armory? is that right?) that'll help with some stuff, but these dinner & other suggestions will let us strike out on our own a bit.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 24 September 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

ok cool! i am actually 1 block away from the armory building (can see it from my front door) - this being providence i may even know your friends, by sight if not by name

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 24 September 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

I won't throw in last names to google proof it a little - Cauley and Rachel ring a bell?

EZ Snappin, Friday, 24 September 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

hmmm, no but like i said i might recognize them -- anyway i think my bf is away that weekend & i'll be around. if u want to grab a beer or w/e hit me on webmail

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 24 September 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

Will do if time permits! Always happy to meet people when I'm visiting their stomping grounds.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 24 September 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

Well, life is delaying the trip for a week. At least we'll avoid the crazy Italian Columbus Day crowd. Looks like it will be a shorter visit too, but I'll ping you on webmail Elmo if I look to have a free minute.

Thanks again to all for the recommendations!

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

i now live in beautiful cranston, rhode island.

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

noteable fact, via wiki:

Over 30% of Cranston's residents describe themselves as Italian American, one of the highest percentages of this ethnic group in cities with over 50,000 residents in the United States.

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

vivaldi's on broad has good NY style pizza, prolly my fave pizza place in town. you're near poco loco now too.

there are a couple of coffee shops if you head south on broad into pawtuxet village, plus there's a brewed awakenings on pontiac (tho I haven't really been bowled over by their offerings). oh there are a couple of dunkin donuts around in case you haven't noticed.

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

be sure to visit the garden city brick & mortar graveyard, there used to be an ozymandias there

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

yea vivaldi's is right around the corner, tho i have to admit i've been going hard at catanzaro's in the past few months, toppings there are so damn good

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

be prepared to be struck by cranstonitis, the inability to leave cranston for unexplained psychosomatic reasons

I think calvino wrote about it in invisible cities

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:10 (thirteen years ago)

i think reluctance to travel distances it's a very characteristic RI thing in general, i am actually v nervous about actually getting providence people to visit cranston

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

Gonna spend a night there in 2 weeks! Partly to go to a Pawtucket ballgame.
