The season is starting in 15 minutes so, by popular demand, here is a brand new thread as pure and clean as the baseballs they use in the Show.

Play ball.

nicely done felicity. thank you kindly.

Kneel before Zod!

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 30 March 2003 23:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Don't they muddy up the balls a bit, though, so they aren't so clean as to blind the hitters under the lights and glamour of the Big Show?

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 30 March 2003 23:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sure, Gaylord, that's one strategy.

Yay! Tim Salmon got a hit. I haf him in my other league. Now he just needs to score.

(In case you missed it, I guess I stopped caring about the AL Wild Card after I hit the AL West. Everything else all became kind of irrelevant.)

UTIL = DH. That's all. You can put any hitter into the UTIL spot. Same thing with the P spots - relievers or starters can go there.

Predictionies:

AL East: Yanks

AL Wild Card: Red Sox

NL East: Phillies

NL West: San Frisco

bnw (bnw), Monday, 31 March 2003 01:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

nah, they could care less as long as they're all outfield eligible. you could field three left fielders. I am very curious how fielding stats are gonna play out though, in particular with outfielders ie. is it a good or bad idea to throw out three center fielders?

AL East - Yankees. Red Sox in 2nd, and they'll get the wild card; Blue Jays a close 3rd.
AL Central - Twins. I don't think there's a real contest there.
AL West - Athletics.

NL East - Braves.
NL Central - Cardinals, narrowly over the Astros.
NL West - Diamondbacks. Giants in the wildcard.

Series -- Diamondbacks take the Athletics in game 7.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Let me guess . . . Aurilia World Series MVP?

okay, here's my rationale for you dingo butts:

rich aurilia batted in front of bonds in 2001. he had the best season by a SS not named A-Rod that year (thank you Bob Costas & EA Sports).

.324 ba, .941 obps, 206 hits, 37 2b, 37 hrs, 114 r, 97 rbi.

those are CLASSIC stats.

last year he got hurt but is healed and healthy but more importantly had to forfeit the the much-coveted spot in the lineup to jeff kent, who frankly is a marginal hitter when not in front of Bonds (don't get me started on his fielding).

so now back to 2003, aurilia's back in front of bonds.
this spring he's hitting:

.412 ba (21/51), 4 hrs, 17 rbis... talk to me at the end of the season I ANSWER TO NONE OF YOU FOOLS.

but seriously, i'm not being a homer, Bonds is as feared as ever (with good reason: have any of you seen him swing the bat this spring?????????????????????) i think aurilia will be seeing lots of meatballs proving Aurlia/Bonds to be THEE power hitting 2-some of the mlb this year.

f-
Bonds is my man, we go way back.

i want to claim someone off waivers too, but i'm not saying who because i'm so low on the waiver pole

maura (maura), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Holy shit, I go to the bar and and there are 25 new messages.

Couple of things: Yes, Aurilia was great in 2001 (I had him on my team in my other league and I couldn't BELIEVE my luck), but gygax are you familiar with the concept of "career year"? See Jay Bell in 1999 and Todd Hundley in 1996. Anyway, Aurilia may very well have a kick-ass year, but the point is you could have drafted him much lower.

All you people picking the Twins (Tep = "I don't think there's a real contest there") are fucking nuts. Yes, I'm a White Sox homer, but you're out of your mind if you think they'll repeat the magical season they had last year. Everything went their way. No big deal, that's baseball; but it's unrealistic to expect it to happen again. Just ask the Mariners. The ChiSox are ready to rock; with Colon in the fold they are clearly the team to beat in the central.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

This "success" you speak of is quite intriguing to me.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

i say the phillies get to the series, because they seem to do so every ten years or so (1983 ... 1993 ... see a pattern here?)

and was there a more nineties team than the 1993 phillies? i mean, john kruk really!

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

haw haw, mr. blount. really, it would be nice to have more than one world series ring.

though a yankees-phillies world series would be serious dual-loyalties time fer me.

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

All you people picking the Twins (Tep = "I don't think there's a real contest there") are fucking nuts. No big deal, that's baseball; but it's unrealistic to expect it to happen again. Just ask the Mariners.

Yeah, but the Mariners still had a great season last year -- one of the best seasons since the introduction of the wildcard of any team that didn't make the playoffs (better than many that did make the playoffs in other years, in other words). It's just that the other teams had better seasons.

I don't see that happening in the AL Central. The Tigers and Royals are out of the running, obviously. The Indians are rebuilding, and they're not done yet. The White Sox aren't chopped liver, and the improvement to their pitching may make them more of a threat than I think -- but the Twins have everything going for them that they had last year. Unlike most surprise-victory teams, they haven't lost their stars to free agency, no one seems to have become a primadonna overnight, and they got enough of a payroll increase that they didn't have to sacrifice lesser-name players in order to keep the big guns under contract.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, Tep we'll just have to agree to disagree. That's why they play the games!

and was there a more nineties team than the 1993 phillies?

I always saw them as an 80's team! Which was the attraction! Really really wanted them to win. Jim Fregosi was awesome.

I always saw them as an 80's team! Which was the attraction! Really really wanted them to win. Jim Fregosi was awesome.

come to think of it, the 1983 phillies were the ultimate seventies team, only ten years after the fact. they were basically the seventies reds, only in phillies uniforms for a year. the "wheeze kids" was their nickname, in fact!

god, this is taking me back ...

Its all about Rocco Baldelli this year. Remember that.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 31 March 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

road trip to wappingers falls, anyone?

I really don't get this reference.

Hey Yanc3y, can I get in on the softball action?

hstencil, Monday, 31 March 2003 12:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

I dunno about Rocco. My $$$ draft was with a group of guys that went to high school with him, and none of them drafted him (I did). Maybe he's just a prick, or maybe he's not all that (two of the guys actually played with him).

So here's why no one will win the World Series this year:

Why the Yankees can't win it:

Despite their high-profile arms, the Yankees just don't have the starting pitching to dominate the regular season or to take a playoff series. Wells and Clemens are in the twilights of their careers (and look for the Rocket to start mailing it in once he hits 300 wins) and Petitte still can't knock the injury bug. That leaves Mussina to be his usual solid self and either Weaver or Contreras to step up. I don't think that they will. Obviously the hitting is there in spades, but just look at what happened to them against the Angels last year.

Why the Red Sox can't win it:

Who can pitch beyond Lowe and Pedro? Casey Fossum??? Please! (yes I know he's on my team. Shhh!) Their lineup is obviously insanely potent, but the chances that the big bats remains healthy all year are slim to none. Also, the closer-by-committee approach will be a tremendous failure.

Why the Twins can't win it:

Their starting pitching is lackluster at best. Radke will be lucky to play half the season, and we already know that Milton won't. Santana's a stud, but he's gonna be a long reliever to make room for Kenny Rogers??? Bad move. Their lineup has a lot of holes (that infield is great defensively, but terrible offensively), and there's no way Once in a Lifetime Eddie Guardado repeats last year.

Why the White Sox can't win it:

Paul Konerko shows the Sox's troubles in a nutshell: inconsistency. Aside from Ordonez, the Sox are way too streaky, and I don't think the addition of Colon (an extremely overrated pitcher -- his WHIP ain't all that at all) will fix that. Sure, the youngsters (Crede, Borchard, etc) give hope, but they're not there yet. Plus, I'm not at all convinced that their 3rd, 4th or 5th starters can win 10 games, much less the 12 to 15 needed to take the AL Central (the weakest division in baseball, of course).

Why the A's can't win it:

Can they score runs??? Sure, you've got Tejada and Chavez, but other than that it's a lineup of question marks. Can Durazo stay healthy? It's a big if. Can Dye return to form? Who knows. Of course, with that rotation (which features 2003's breakout player, Mr. Ted Lilly) they only need 2 or 3 runs a game. And Foulke in the bullpen is a huge step up over Billy Koch. But still, when Chris Singleton's getting major playing time on your squad, you've got problems.

Why the Angels can't win it:

Lightning only strikes once.

Why the Mariners can't win it:

They've let this team age in hopes of returning to their amazing form from two years ago. It ain't happening. Edgar will get his hits, but who knows if he can make it to first. Mike Cameron? He gives Greg Vaughn a run for Worst Hitter in Baseball. Ichiro's amazing of course, and, if Boone's back on the needle, he'll be great too. They'll score runs (is John Olerud ageless or what?), but they'll give up a lot too. Freddy Garcia's on a slow Ankiel-like implosion and Piniero will be God-like, but not yet.

I'll do the NL later. I have work to do...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

So where's John D in all this, anyway?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

nice, can't wait for it Yanc3y.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

On the the NL...

Why the Braves can't win it:

This appears to be Atlanta's weakest squad of the past decade. Maybe Leo Mazzone's running an orphanage for wayward starting pitchers, cuz that's what their rotation looks like this year -- Mike Hampton? No way will he do anything this season. Look for maybe two or three good starts in a row to get the baseball scribes' pens twirling, but nothing more than that. Paul Byrd blows. I don't care how many wins he got in KC. And hitting-wise, they appear weak as well. Sheff is coming off a down year, Furcal still hasn't recovered from the injury, Chipper seems less potent and now they'll be playing the terminally overrated hitter Robert Fick (he's a better puncher than a batter...). But they'll win the NL East cuz they've got experience, and cuz Andruw Jones will finally fulfill his promise. But they don't get past the first round of the playoffs.

Why the Phillies can't win it:

It's turned into a fucking mantra already, but once again pitching will hold the Phillies back. Yes, Millwood's solid and Randy Wolf has shown some brilliant flashes, but beyond that you're looking at a lot of 4.50-plus ERAs. Padilla really blew last year after the All Star break, Brett Myers isn't ready to pitch games in a penant race and Brandon Duckworth will spend his career as a perennial 5th starter fighting for a job. Their lineup of batters could be the best in the majors, and while Thome won't repeat last season, he will, at the very least, make those around him better. So yes, Pat the Bat Burrell will shine, as will Abreau, Rollins and even Lieberthal. But those starting arms (not to mention that their bullpen blows -- JOSE MESA??!?!) will fade down the stretch, and they'll miss the playoffs by about six games.

Why the Cardinals can't win it:

Allow me to repeat myself again: The Cards are essentially the Phillies with slightly better pitching. The problem is that "slightly." Yeah, Matt Morris fuXing roXors, but beyond that you're getting into guys like Woody Williams -- who can be brilliant, but the injury bug crawled up his ass the 95 years or so ago that he was born. Brett Tomko could have a very good season with the Cards as well. The bullpen's suspect, as Izzy's got the injury problems and even when he's healthy he's a Top 10 closer at best. But those hitters will win them a lot of games, cancelling out the many errors their pitchers will assuredly make. But what happens if Pujols or Rolen go cold in the postseason? They're goners if that happens.

Why the Astros Can't Win it:

They've got superstars in the bullpen and superstars on the field, but they're support guys are kinda weak. But still, on paper, this would appear to be the best team in the NL. Berkman-Bagwell-Kent-Oswald-Miller-Dotel-Wagner. But beyond that they're pretty thin. The young guys like Lane and Saarloos (or however you spell that fucker's name) could end up playing big roles if they're brittle bones start to snap (which is a certainty), but relying on rookies during a playoff run is not advisable. Look for injuries to doom them.

Why the Cubs can't win it:

So here's what's confused me about all those preseason predictions showing the Cubs in the playoffs: HOW THE FUCK WILL THEY SCORE RUNS??? Yeah, Sammy's good for 130 RBI, but beyond that, who can hit? Alou, sure, if he can get out of the wheelchair. Mark Bellhorn? Gimme a break. Choi? Supposedly he's a stud, but so few rookies really break out in the big leagues. Patterson? The quintessential Cubbie: Always disappointing. Their pitching looks great, and I think that Clement might be their real No. 1 pitcher. I'm still worried that Prior will have injury problems given the amount of use his arm will be given (Kerry Wood and AJ Burnett to the doctor's office please...), but when he's on the mound he'll be solid. I really like their bullpen -- getting Remlinger was a smart move, even if Alfonseca couldn't save an important game even if he had 19 fingers. They'll contend, but they don't have the bats to pass the 'Stros or Cards.

Why the DBacks can't win it:

So we're all 'sposed to believe that Elmer fucking Dessens is that elusive third ace the D'Backs have always wanted. Whatever, Gammons. Of course Randy Schilling is worth a good 50 wins, so already they're the NL West faves. BYK should be interesting -- everyone's thinking the new Lowe, but I'm thinking the new Chan Ho-Park. Flashes of brilliance but that's it. As far as hitting's concerned, they've got jackshit. Spivey will return to the .280 plateau where he belongs, and if LoGo starts shooting roids again maybe they can score. But otherwise, this is one boring ass lineup.

Why the Giants can't win it all:

They look a lot better on paper this year than they did last, that's for sure. Durham and Jose Cruz Jr are both big additions that could account for 100 more runs this season. They're bullpen looks rock solid, one of the best in baseball. But their starting pitching is rough. Can Jason Schmidt win a game on the road? Alou will have to do some serious tweaking to keep him pitching at home during a playoff series. But Alou can rest easy -- they'll miss the playoffs by a hair. Reuter will win 15 games and Moss 13, but Bonds' big bat just won't be enough to carry them.

Why the Dodgers can't win it all:

Rupert Murdoch needs to buy himself a milk factory, cuz this is one unhealthy team. But this spring supposedly things are back in order and Brown and Dreifort are looking sharp. If this is true (and these things never are) look for the Dodgers to get off to a torid pace. Shawn Green's the most uncelebrated player in baseball (prolly cuz he's so fucking dull), but he's a great hitter. Their lineup isn't anywhere near scary, but I really think that the Crime Dog could be a difference maker. Veteran power bats are hard to come by, and I think that he'll pay off. Still, it'll be the injuries that doom them.

great stuff yanc3y.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

yancey: opening day is about optimism you bastard.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 31 March 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Fuck. I didn't start Corey Patterson and he already has two rbi. Darnit.

Whoops, just caught stealing though..

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 31 March 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

lawrence, is there anyone other than gonzalez whom you'd consider trading guardado for?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 March 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

mark, no. But I'll throw in 1B, DH Randall Simon (hit .301 last year and is starting for the Pirates this year).

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 31 March 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Tom Glavine couldn't last 4 innings against the Cubs. Looks like it's going to be a long season for the Mets.

Technical question: will the roster changes I made today not show up 'til tomorrow?

hstencil, Monday, 31 March 2003 17:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why the Yankees can't win it [. . . ]

2003 is clearly the year of the Orioles.

Hooray, ChicksDigKs is in sole ownership of 9th place with 151.5 points. Who knew stats could be so exciting? Go, Nomo, beat the tar out of old man Johnson tonight :P

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

FUUUUUUCK COREY PATTERSON 3 Run jack! 5 rbi!!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

How will they score runs indeed!

Diamond -- you have CP, no?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

hstencil, Monday, 31 March 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Cry me a river, stencil. If you were a real Sox fan you'd have some White Sox on Mickey Mantle's Liver. But oh no, you had to have your Mark Grudzielaneks and your Cristin Guzmans and their fat stats. Real Chicago homers pick up Zambranos off waivers.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

hstencil, Monday, 31 March 2003 19:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hernandez is still available in my money league. I can't decide if I should dump Jeremy Bonderman (the Tigers' stud hurler) for him...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh hooray for your cable, h.

But, that is the most pitiful excuse from a wannabe Chicago sports fan I have ever heard. I, too, was absent from the live draft and somehow ChicksDigKs has MAGS Ordonez and Damaso "Rowr" Marte.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, you took my man, Felicity...right out from under my nose!

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

yancey - I don't know, they're both young pitchers ie. what I usually avoid (inconsistency in a pitchers scares me too much). Hernandez is 'da ace' though, my theory being that to be an ace at all you have to be at least semi-decent (hence, er, my drafting Ismael Valdes). I Love Baseball being an exception to my avoid young pitchers rule becuz it's a TWENTY TEAM league. twenty teams but non-tradtional stats counting - I have no idea how ILB will play out.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hmm, Kerry, we might talk . . . but right now even this Cubs fan doesn't want to trade Mags for Sosa. I wuv Mags.

Haha, even Kerry Wood got a hit today! We love when the pitchers "help themselves out." THE NL ROXX U R ALL GAY

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'm with you on avoiding young pitchers, and young pitchers on shitty teams even moreso. bonderman's being touted as a "once in a lifetime" prospect, but hernandez has been hyped for ages it seems. i think bonderman starts tomorrow. maybe i can hold off until then.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Heh, I met Damaso Marte once last season. I had gone down to the Bullpen sports bar for an hour after the game. As I left and was walking north to 35th street I looked over and he was just sitting there on a bench in that landscaped area in front of the ticket windows. I walked up and shook his hand and asked him what he was doing out there. He was apparantly waiting for a friend to come and pick him up!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

WHO HAS JUAN CRUZ?
WHO HAS TIM SPOONEYBARGER?

ALternatively, what is the best way to locate a player who is on someone else's team (i.e., not searchable under "available players") (No Carrie Brownstein jokes, please)

Damaso gets a "hott" in the redwellmetrics ratings.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

I hope every game today does something to discount all that shit I wrote above (da Cubbies' 15 runs, for example). I wanna be bulletin board material!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

felicity - either just click 'taken' or search by last name

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

f-

there's is a tab on the available players page that has "Taken" (if you want to peak into other people's dugouts).

you can always do a search on the last name on that page as well just for shits and giggles.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Felicity, when you click on that available players link, the page has links to toggle between "available" and "taken" players.

Also you can search via the player's last name.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, just enter in their last name in the search thing and the player should come up (unless you spell it wrong, which happens all the time to me).

Something serious I do want to talk about as FASHION will be sending your commissioner abroad for a few weeks...

I have named David R. as vice-commissioner to your league. I think he is a worthy candidate as he knows how to wear stirrups properly. Starting Thursday, April 17th I will hand the keys over to David. I hope to resume commissoner duties the week of May 5th but it may take some time before I can resume full-duties.

Without further ado, please extend a warm welcome for David R. as vice-commissioner.

Sweet crap I need to set aside a few days to give this thread the attention it deserves.

Michael Kay is so insufferable it makes me wanna puke up my recently digested Pizza Hut Cinnasticks. I might drive up to Beantown to see the Aislers Set after all if this crapola keeps up. Also - Soriano is a piece of crap. Also - the Red Sox got what they deserved, and I can only hope they learn how to pitch to crappy hitters from this debacle. In addition - I am glad I don't live in Boston & listen to sports talk radio. In conclusion - crap crappy crap.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 31 March 2003 23:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Post-script - Alan Embree has an infinite ERA. Fuck yeah.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 00:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

That hold shouldn't count. I think you have to, you know, get somebody out to qualify for a hold. Pretty sure that will be changed by tomorrow.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

i havta admit that i've been reading the fantasy baseball threads since they started and poor mark p, i wish roy had done slightly beter. but at least half the runs were unearned.

its a long season dyson! halla will have his day!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Cool dyson, the League needs fans. Personally, I am perving on the dental floss-thin team ERA of the Aaron W's A-Oks.

Who is the manager of the Lurkers? Pretty good team (shame about the caps).

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually, Yanc3y, the band I was most stoked to see was The Quails, tho I am curious about Hella (Gygax's well-intentioned advice notwithstanding) but I opted out of the 3+ hour commute & the financial spendage to watch the Red Sox lose & listen to the triumverate of Yankee announcers blow chunks. You Cablevision folks are so lucky, you are, to have the baseball stylings of Bobby Murcer invade your home 5 days a week. (PS - I've seen the Aislers Set live twice, & they're swell, so I don't know why there's all this animosity / apathy towards them, especially live.)

Would you believe that I'm not totally stoked on baseball season starting? I think I shot my load waaaaay too early. (And to think, I was gonna make a concerted effort to avoid any metaphors that involved the schlong.)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

ha ha, i just got that - halla wil have his day, ha haaaa

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

What's to prevent someone who currently has a 0.00 ERA from finnagling his rotation and relievers so that none are active when they actually pitch, thereby ensuring said average to remain at nil?

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

you could bench all your pitchers all season if you wanted, but the points you'd get in era would be mightily offset by what you'd lose in k's, wins, etc.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

That's the freedom of being in a deranged league.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

The best way to disuade those sort of shenanigans would be to note the categories you'd lose out on by doing so - Wins, Saves, Ks, and Holds - in addition to how it affects your pitching performance as a whole. Sure, ou'll get 3 18s (for ERA, WHIP, & Total Bases), but you'd also be saddled w/ 4 1s - that averages out to approximately 8.25 points for each pitching category, which is pretty darn mediocre.

Or what the Blount said.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, yeah, Mark, about "waiver" stuff - if the guy you're picking up is a FA (Free Agent), then it's an immediate transaction. If he's on W (Waivers), he won't appear on your roster until 3 days after he was originally released. And, of course, whether you get him or not depends on your Waiver Priority (which you can find on the Team & Managers List page). High # = good. Low # = bad. He / she with lower Waiver Priority number gets waiver bait. If you pick up a waiver guy, you get high #. Free agent pickups don't affect waiver priority.

What this really means is that those that avoided the waiver wire bonanza this pre-season have a very good chance to pick up Mark Teixeira when Yahoo! figures out that he's actually on Texas' roster.

Hahaha will I become as bitter a baseball fan as Dave R I wonder? No, I think Cubs fans are much more cheerful losers. It's because the seats in our park are properly angled towards home plate.

I was tempted to swap Alex ("Don't confuse me with A-Rod") Gonzalez with Rey Ordonez at SS but then I remembered that they are equally mediocre and at least A-Gon is kind of foyne.

The Devil Rays should play to their strenghth and have an all Ray/Rey lineup.

Alex ("ouch, don't slap my butt") Gonzalez?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

h, I think you can get pitching probables but lots of times even the reality managers don't know their own lineups! Hello, Bob Brenley.

Yeah, Leee should be forced to changed his nickname to the Zimas as punishment.

As for starting pitchers, there's a ^ next to the date when your pitcher is starting. A nice Yahoo feature! (Not always 100% accurate but of course due to last-minute scratches and whatnot.)

I only wish we could all finish in first place like before the season! But, since that's not the case, I hope all your best hitters break their arms.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I only wish we could all finish in first place like before the season!

My ego is taking up too much room up here in first -- I even had to let go of my namesake. But at the risk of jinxing my luck, I'll be changing the team name to, "Who needs pitching?"

PS - Schmidty I heart you! Calming down my ERA plus 7 Ks! U R BOOTIFUL.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

YOU need pitching.

I'm taking the Giant-Angel way to the top, Felicity.

And hstencil, I just check box scores to see who the starters are and hope that they'll be starters for the next game. Better 'n noffink. (Hey, one night on top and I'm already giving out expert advice!)

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

I, for one, am grateful for the advice to start Durazo. I had completely forgotten about that pesky AL and the DH position!

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

People, you can find out the starting line-ups for a game by clicking on the link to your players' games, next to their name. For most of the day this brings up a preview page, but about an hour before the game (around the time managers submit their lineups) it switches to the lineups. Once the game is underway, of course, it gives you an updated box score.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

It won't be easy, like your fielding range
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your glove after all that you've done

You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
It's off to the waivers with you

I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay in the league with no RBI appeal
Looking out on the diamond, behind the radar gun

So I chose free agents
Stealing home, trying everything new
But your BA impressed none at all
I never expected it to

Don't cry for me Rich Aurillia
The truth is I never rated you
All through my dugout days
My sad trades with gygax!
I kept my promise
Please keep your distance

And as for Prior, and as for Woods
I always send them in
Though it seemed to the league they were all I desired

They are mere Cubbies
They are not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love Dusty and hope Dusty loves me

Don't cry for me Rich Aurillia
The truth is I needed some pitching
All through the bottom third
My sad Cubbie relievers
I kept no promise if
Only they'd keep their distance

Have I dropped too much?
There's no one more I can think of to add.
But all you have to do is press submit
That every word is Bonds

Yo stencil - if you REALLY want to know who's going to start, Yahoo! usually posts the starting line-ups approximately 30 minutes before the game actually begins. Go to your team page, click on the STATUS link for the player you're curious about, and (when the pop up window goes P!O!P!) click on the BOX SCORE link (in the pop up, obviously).

ESPN's Rob Neyer on that bastard Baldelli:

It's not hard to see what people see in Rocco Baldelli.

He can run. Baldelli gets out of the box as quickly as any right-handed hitter I've seen since Bo Jackson.

He can throw. In the 15th inning last night, Baldelli prevented what looked like a sure go-ahead run with a perfect throw to nail Trot Nixon at the plate.

And he looks like a ballplayer. He's big and he's strong and he's got "the good face" (as old scouts like to say).

But can he field? Monday, he turned a line-drive single into something worse.

And can he hit? Tuesday, he collected three base hits ... none of which left the infield.

As you might have heard, Baldelli played 23 games at the Triple-A level last summer and drew the grand total of zero walks, which suggests that he's still got a few things to learn. And that's OK, because he's still just a baby of only 21 years.

So no, Rocco Baldelli isn't Joe DiMaggio yet. But it should be fun watching him try to get there.

(Note: I'm not really a bitter guy; I'm super fun & cuddly, like a Monchichi, or Squirtle. But mock interviews & typing up chemistry labs & infuriating comp sci professors make me LKDJLXZXIQOFDLKAPI. You understand, I hope.)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lawrence and Mark... send the trade through again... i will OK it.

Aaron W., trades are allowed by the league, not just the owners. This is the way the league was set up (to be fair). You have a chance to vote for or against any trade, click on the pending trades in the league page.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Cross-post with Yancey, but yeah, what he said.

It offends me hstencil, because it makes me think you don't know much about baseball (or at least the fantasy kind).

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

fair enough, I guess. Maybe I wanted to join this league so I could learn more from you, your highness?

hstencil, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Stop taking things personally, stencil!

Anyway, the reason why you wanna have the option to veto trades that owners agree to is cuz when an owner realizes that they are out of the running, he/she might decide to dump their best players to someone else in the league for jackshit, just to fuxor everyone else over. This has happened WAY too many times in leagues I have been in, and it's important not to let it happen here. It's fuxing frustrating!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

well why didn't anyone object to gygax! when he was setting up the rules for the league?

Because it makes sense IF (and only if) its used as a procautionary measure (ie. I get fed up with my ranking at the end of the year and decide to trade A-Rod, Mulder and Halladay to Yancey for a large Coke).

As we've managed to succinctly prove in the span of ten posts, what one person thinks is a steal often isn't, and as Lawrence points out, he's already got three solid closers -> did whoever vetoed the trade take that into account?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Crosspost obv.)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

(cross-post)

Yo, everybody chill.

But, the veto function is for when someone is trading Vladimir Guerrero for Damien Easley, and since we all know each other -- unlike most Yahoo! leagues -- we don't really need to worry about it. The veto function is imbedded (heh) in the game so there's no way to change it, and with almost 20 teams... well, SOMEONE isn't going to like each trade. So just let them go thru. It's part of the game.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

also, i urge all of you to please review the other thread if you need any refreshment of rules and policies that everyone had a chance to vote on prior to the beginning of the season.

also, may i remind you that i withdrew a trade that was less unfair than either of these 2 current trades due to some protests from the managers.

I apologize for vetoing the trade, i had no idea it would render the trade inactive (this refers to the commish vote only). Please send it through again and I will okay it.

:-D

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Closers are overvalued to begin with. Biddle, playing on Montreal, is unlikely to get many save opportunities. He's been ok first couple outings, but this is a new role for him. There is no guarantee Biddle is even going to keep the job - a couple bad outings and it will be right back to Stewart.

Lo Doca plays catcher, a position where in fantasy anyway, a good hitting one is invaluable. In 2001, Lo Doca went 25-90-.320, fucking awesome numbers, just a cut below Piazza (a perennial 1st round pick) and about I-Rod equal. I'm of the opinion that last year was a fluke and he'll return to form. Oh yeah, he's eligible at 1st Base as well

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

But doesn't it take a majority (or higher) of owners to actually veto a trade? We don't have the blackball option do we? We aren't the fucking Skulls! (but if we are I get to be Ryan Phillipe! Yowzas!)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

And yeah, Lo Duca's a stud, especially since he's a catcher. 3-3 last night, yahoo! (he's on my $$$ team)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Also, yeah, what Aaron said: the veto function is embedded in the Yahoo fantasy system. gygax didn't have the option of including it or not incuding it, and it doesn't mean everyone is obligated to weigh in on one side or the other of each trade.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yanc3y, stop thinking I take everything personally! I didn't take Diamonds' post personally, but it is smug and condescending, even if I don't think it's that big a deal, and if you can't acknowledge that, well I don't know what to tell ya.

You guys also have to acknowledge that the current system is no good for letting all owners know about impending trades. I didn't even notice the last one, and I'd guess that there are some people in the league who haven't even logged in in a while, so it could've been more than just me or gygax! that vetoed (is it a vote tally? or will one veto nix the deal - if the latter, that's not so good) it, if vetoing is dependent only on not pressing the "approve trade" button. I didn't send a veto notice to gygax!, even tho I'd keep Biddle if he were on my team, so maybe gygax! should just go by actual emails he gets from owners?

hstencil, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Also, apologies hstencil, I didn't mean to sound like an ass. I just get really frustrated when non-egregious trades constantly get vetoed.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

also other good hitting catchers were still available in the waivers.

No harm, no foul, Diamond. I was just jokin' right back at ya.

hstencil, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hstencil, the idea is to let people manage their own teams.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

That didn't answer any of my questions, mark. If one veto kills a trade, and our lurker owner (par example) never logs in, isn't this whole system pretty bad?

hstencil, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

We can REJECT trades? I did not know that. I posted my query / quizzicality (sic, you betcha) re: the LoDuca/Biddle swap to the BB on the league page, but I don't have any actual problem w/ the trade - I was just awonderin' awhy this trade was going through. In hindsight, perhaps it was not best to voice this guhwha in public - it's the Selig in me, alas.

And I take umbrage at Yanc3y's claim that 1) I only post to this thread when I'm doing well and 2) that I'm not doing well. (Note: I am in denial.) Also - 3) I can't hit for shit.

And, yo, commish, I'm always here, in some form (usually corporeal, except on every other weekend, when I'm magma). What's up? (Feel free to e-mail me if it's a "sensitive" issue - cf. chronic rash, dysentery (sic again), Tourette's, etc.)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

You know, the way I thought I understood it, the commish is the only person with the option to veto trades. All we get to do is send him/her emails complaining. So, if the commish only vetoes either egregious trades (dumping of players, mistakes, etc.) then we'll all be happy, right? Gygax, you're still commish, right? Don't veto anymore trades.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Re: this whole trade business - from what I understood, the system worked as such (and I think should be like this, if it isn't already):

1) any PENDING trades (that is, trades accepted by both parties) are posted on your team page - it's a bit hard to catch if you're not looking for it, but it's there.

2) The commish then has first, last, and final say regarding the "fairness" of the trade, taking into consideration the hubbub the other owners raise about the trade, and whether that hubbub is justified or just hot air.

3) The commish then accepts / vetoes the trade, assuming the commish is around to do so.

3a) There should be a window of 2-3 days between the trade getting OKed by trade participants and the trade going through (barring commish involvement) to allow for debate between the owners.

The only time I've ever been involved w/ a vetoed trade was when some shit-for-brains sad sack in my keeper league decided to try & screw the top teams in the league a couple years back by trying to trade Posada & Jeter for Ass & Crap to a team competing for the top spot. Unless the lopsidedness of the trade is this blatant, however, there shouldn't be any monkeying around by the owners (cf. last year's real "trade" between the Expos & Red Sox & Marlins involving Cliff Floyd & dubious pitching prospects, which STILL doesn't make a lick of sense & is rumored to be the result of some owner/commish finagling).

I have no idea if any of this is pertinent to the debate at hand. I'm the worst vice commissioner ever.

METAPHYSICAL FANTASY BASEBALL...

because two managers in cahoots could be subverting the system. obv. there's no $$$ involved but what price fame and glory?

Gygax, you're still commish, right? Don't veto anymore trades.

Hey thanks chump you nice person. As explained (what I thought was clearly) above, it was an honest mistake.

But to address your concerns, I will veto trades as warranted (see commish duties), I thought that the option in the sheet above was not the same as the commish tools "prevent trade" option.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

One way to make sure folks know about a pending trade, if no one notices the li'l reminder up on the top of their team page (just above the lineups), is to post to the BB on the standings page, or type "YO! TRADE!" in this thread & list the details.

And then we can talk about each other's mommas.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hey thanks chump you nice person. As explained (what I thought was clearly) above, it was an honest mistake.

Awww c'mon, I was just saying that that's a solution (not vetoing trades) to people getting their knickers twisted. Obviously you made a honest mistake. We all do, etc.

If peeps want to know about pending trades, just look on your team page every couple days. They're up at the top and you have 2 days to say something about them.

Anyway, time to remember... 'tis just a game!

Your questions implied that every trade should go through every owner, which is a system I don't necessarily agree with.

Well right now I guess I also feel this way. Reality baseball GMs make trades all the time and nobody gets up in their shiznit.

It's fine that David R wants to second-guess the Biddle-Lo Duca trade and we can talk about it here the way we trash talk and debate in general, but my feeling is that it's going to be more fun a season for everyone if people don't start patronizing each other and vetoing/protesting trades because they think it's not in the other managers' best interests. It could get ugly and vindictive. I am somewhat capricious but whatever, my hottie pitchers are doing ok and it's baseball -- anything can happen -- like the Angels.

Re: the Biddle deal: I don't mind dealing Biddle to Leee because I am kicking a$$ in the pitching categories and Leee is suffering in pitching, whereas I might not deal a good pitcher to, say the Stevenson Pockets, because they are pretty strong in pitching. I imagine Leee might feel the same way about his offense and my offense. Have a heart -- I had a good day yesterday, but in general my offense is near the bottom in almost every category.

Anyway, MarKKKKKKKKK is off to another good start in the young pitchers' duel but what is he doing walking Vasquez? That's nuts!

Lest we forget KWill also signed such luminaries as Sandy Alomar Jr. and Royce Clayton (y'know, for the OPS), traded Ray Durham for ... um ... something, and gave the Pirates 2/3rds of their current rotation (Josh Fogg & Kip Wells) in exchange for current Sausage Race Participant Todd Ritchie. Up until this off-season, KWill did everything in his power to whack the ChiSox behind the knee w/ a lead pipe. It almost makes me wanna wonder just why he got Colon...

Holy crap, I'm bitter.

Felicity, there are plenty of other middle relievers in the sea. Let Al go. You're too good for him.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

You flatter me, David, but middle reliever? I prefer set-up man and vulture specialist, hmph. But I am so over him.

I adore how Prior always finishes his follow-though with a little mitt-on-the-hip "attitude," like a runway model striking a pose at the end of the catwalk. He's wonderful.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Vulture specialist"? Like Mark Grace & Jose Canseco?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dave R, don't forget Kenny's spectacular "David Wells as a White Sox Player" experiment.

hstencil, Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

vulture specialist = a relief pitcher with more decisions than some of the starters! He's the master of that. He's also actually prety effective, so it's not all sarcastic for me to call him "WInning Pitcher" Levine.

Surely the "Vulture" is a classic roto archetype? e.g., the Angels have a tie or a small lead in late innings, the previous pitcher gets in a jam, Bud Black brings in sinker-slider specialist Al Levine to induce the double play, Levine walks the other guy's baserunner in or somehow lets him score, erasing the lead, and then proceeds to close the inning, Glaus or Garrett Anderson either rally for a couple or don't but if they do the the next thing you know the line looks like Levine (W, 8-6), Percival (S, 35). Not bad for 15 to 35 pitches.

The Canseco pitching story makes me sad. But I liked the inning of perfect relief Steve Finley threw in the D-backs championship year one game when they were getting blown out by the Roxx.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hold = same as a save. Except it's not.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, I mean, I know what it is... but like what exactly the conditions are before a pitcher gets a hold. Like, a save is that the tying run must be at the plate (???!?... the 13-year-old stat geek in me is crying that I don't remember this for sure).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, the criteria is the same as a save in terms of the team's lead - actually I think it is tying run "in the hole"? In other words you can get a save/hold if your team is up by six but you come in with the bases loaded? I think?! Anyway, the criteria for saves and holds is the same.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

for a save the tying run doesn't have to be at the plate. Beyond that I'm not sure what the criteria is. I still don't know what WHIP is. Or a hold.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

WHIP is easy... it's Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched. I searched the MLBA rules but couldn't find an exact definition of a save or hold. Bummer!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

SAVES FOR RELIEF PITCHERS
10.20
Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions: (1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and (2) He is not the winning pitcher; and (3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions: (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or (c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

ah, I was wondering why there wasn't a BB category for pitching.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

The thing is, "Hold" is not an official stat so there won't be an entry for it in the rulebook. But just substitute "hold" for "save" in the above.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

The thing I love is that (c) definition for saves: "he pitches effectively for at least three innings"!

There was some crazy game involving the Red Sox last year where they won by like ten runs, but some dude got a save. I think they were up by like 15 in like the sixth inning, and they brought in a bullpen guy who mopped up the last three innings. He gave up five runs or something. And he got credited with a save!

Re: wit & the Chicago Cubs (copyright Baseball Prospectus & their constituents):

"It usually isn't the Cubs if something disappointing hasn't happened, and sure, enough, that's the case here. Now sure, Bobby Hill could have helped himself by having a great camp, but he was good enough to win the job last spring, last summer, and last fall. Why should a little bit of March yips change anything? Because the new sheriff in town probably needed to see something, in the same way that he's convinced that Mark Bellhorn's not good enough if he's only hitting homeruns or drawing walks. But again, perhaps far too predictably, a Dusty-designed team favored the graybeards. So Eric Karros and Mark Grudzielanek will play, although at least Hee Choi managed to hold onto a job-sharing arrangement at first. And then you've got a Cubs bench loaded with some of the scrubbier scrubs around, Tom Goodwin and Lenny Harris and Troy O'Leary, all years removed from utility, plus Ramon E. Martinez, who, like Goodwin, is another one of Dusty's guys from the Giants. You can almost sense the disappointment that Antonio Alfonseca wasn't healthy, so that Kyle Farnsworth could be flagellated for contributing to the unlamented departure of Don Baylor. Rod Beck had a good enough camp to make it, but having overcommitted to guys like Dave Veres and Mark Guthrie already, the Cubs were a bit hamstrung in terms of their choices in the bullpen. Should they finally find a partner to deal for Farnsworth, they'll have made space for someone appropriately old enough to not be mistaken for one of the batboy's fathers."

Yip!

Really, it's just the Cubs' rotation. The sad thing is I also kind of lust after Kerry Wood for my team. And Clement hasn't even turned it up yet. It's also wicked strange how having a high K-rate seems to go along with good WHIP, ERA and Ws, n'est-ce pas?

Hey Felicity-- Your trade offer was totally fair but I couldn't justify messing with my team right now... if it ain't broke, etc.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 14 April 2003 11:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's a big day for Pocket starters as I got three going today:

'Grape' Appier, Vazquez, and Brian Anderson (who was just picked up in a fit of homeritis). 'Zippo' Leiter pitched another great game.

I'm seriously considering starting a Tim Couch bobblehead doll at third base.

This is the Pocket minute for April 14th.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 14 April 2003 12:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

My team continues to be an offensive juggernaut, but yesterday we got some decent starts from Lowe (whose blood blister appears to have healed), Wells and Day... vaulting our team ERA up to 9th place. But only in fantasy land could a team have 3 wins and 6 saves!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 14 April 2003 12:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dropping Pokey Reese was another in a long line of genius moves on my part- he's got 5 errors already this year.

Aaron W., good sportsmanship on your part, rowr. Just keep it in mind if anything changes.

Will do! Just you wait... in a month or so when my team isn't batting .300 no more I'll be begging and pleading.

Maura and I pulled off a pseudo-blockbuster just now! Wilkerson and Olerud for Stewart.

i wuv this thread :)

i also wuv sunday nite baseball but living the wrong side of the atlantic means it doesn't get going til ONE IN THE MORNING, which is rub when one has to go to work on monday :(

i'm still toying with the idea of signing up to NASN (http:\\www.nasn.com), but ten squid a month seems a little excessive, and also means you don't get the fantastic channel five presenters who are v funny.

ALSO, i need some kindly american to tell me which team to support, as it's all very well watching, but rooting for someone has to be better :)

Carsmile, wherefore nasn.com? Can't you follow games on Yahoo.com => Sports => MLB => Game Channel or ESPN.com Game Cast? Or is that TV?

Carsmile you should root for the Dodgers. They have a wonderfully distinguished history, the best radio announcer (Vin Scully) a great ballpark, the best uniforms in baseball, great weather and could really use some sincere overseas fans. Trust me.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 14 April 2003 20:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Carsmile-- Don't root for the Tigers!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 14 April 2003 20:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh and the Dodgers are unrepresented by fans on this board -- they will make your year exciting or misery but Fox, who owns them, spends enough on the Dodgers in salary so it's not like being a doomed Tigers or Orioles fan -- it will be worth your fandom. I like 'em ok but I have enough going on with the Cubs to really hoist the Dodger petard. Theset best is that as a Dodger fan you can get into excellent trash talking with Giants fans Leeee and gygax! (Hint: call them the "gnats" or "jints").

Did I mention the Dodgers have the best uniforms? How do they get their whites so white?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 14 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Whatever you do, don't adopt the Yankees. You understand that's like suddenly becoming a Champions League football fan and adopting Manchester United, right?

The Dodgers would be more like Newcastle or Liverpool or some other team that is in no danger of relegation and occasionally wins but are not hated, overspending perpetual winners. Is there a famously long-suffering perrenial Premiere League team that doesn't get relegated but still never wins? That would be the Cubs.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 14 April 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dodgers do have the best uniforms.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 14 April 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

well yes, i realised the yankees was a no-no :)

sorry about rub link skills, nasn is a new satellite channel showing mlb, nhl and loads of college sport (nasn = north american sports network) oh and nascar too (yaaaaaaawwwwwwwnnnnn, and i'm a formula 1 fan). it's http://www.nasn.com obv. not entirely convinced it's worth the money, i imagine most of their subscribers are ex-pats and military types (and insomniacs) over here...

dodgers are also NL aren't they? can't be doing with this DH nonsense ;)

buh-leeve me, i hear enough of the dodger fandom in my reality baseball life f.

my dad is originally (and now) from los angeles and he gives me enough grief. most of my friends are dodgers fans.

and hold your horses, before you think i'm 100% behind the giants. i think i mentioned earlier that i hated the 1980s giants (will clark barf) but warmed when barry signed with them. (my favorite team in the 70s-early 90s were the Pirates.) one of my most hated players last year was a giant. his initials are Jeff Kent. i was never huge on dusty baker (or darren baker even!) giants pitchers are mediocre at best, their "stars" are ridiculously over-rated... very lucky.

the dodgers have been so mediocre in the past few years, i almost feel sorry for them. i do have some giants paraphenalia, but it's only in tribute to bonds. i have no respect for the management.

[i'm actually in a great mood right now, hard to believe]

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 14 April 2003 20:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

They are "Dodgers" as in the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers, dodging their way between trolleys in Brooklyn but you can think of them like the 2-step UK Garrige Artful Dodgers if you prefer, innit.

Dodgers are NL yes. Double-switch or die! Jim Tracy's a gem of a manager, you'll enjoy him. Oh yes, you get Shawn Green and Eric Gagne, very exciting team . . .

See, the Dodgers and Jints have one of the Classic Rivalries in all of sports. Learn about Bobby Thomson and 1951.

or even "the devil rays", what's that all aboot? maybe if i support the expos they'll come and play some games in london :)

gagne's the awkward looking closer with the funny beard, yes?

i shall ponder this a little longer i think, anyway, anything's better than supporting exeter city (curse you, hopkins and your persuasive ways, "just come to one game" he said, "what harm can it do?" he said, four games this season and scanning the results feverishly every saturday, and a future of trolling round non-league grounds is where it leads i fear...)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 14 April 2003 21:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, and Nomo too! Between him and Gagne that's like two of the most fun pitchers to watch!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 14 April 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ok, you asked for it, I am relatively indifferent to position players but anyway my All-Hott starting lineup:

C: Brad Ausmus
1B: J.T. Snow
2B: Bret Boone
SS: Alex Gonzalez
3B: Troy Glaus
LF: Brian Jordan
CF: Kenny Lofton
RF: Shawn Greene

I may have overlooked some but perhaps I will make adjustments as the season goes on.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 14 April 2003 22:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually it occurs to me that CarsmileSteve probably should root for a team in the Eastern time zone if he wants to actually see some games in real time. I nominate the Expos, because of their poor pathetic homelessness and the fact that they have the best player in baseball in Vlad Guerrero, who yesterday almost threw out a runner at FIRST BASE! (yes it was the slothlike Mo Vaughn, but still - FIRST BASE!)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 14 April 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

But Bret Boone's head looks like a bunch of grapes!

Lofton?!?! Why I oughta....

bnw (bnw), Monday, 14 April 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yanc3y, how's your Jarrod Washburn? How much did you pay for your Jarrod Washburn? Did your Jarrod Washburn come with any accessories? Are you really enjoying your Jarrod Washburn?

Also, your ILB team sucks. How's Jarrod Washburn?

Sorry, bnw, but Lofton is adorable! He looks like a puppy! And he runs fast.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 14 April 2003 22:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

I love Lofton too. He's poetry in motion. I was so excited when the White Sox signed him before the 2002 season. Then he got off to that amazing start, slapping the ball to all fields, stealing bases like he was 10 years younger. Then it all fell apart, the Sox stunk, and he got traded away. Still, it was a real thrill to see him patrolling center field in person a bunch of times.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 14 April 2003 22:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wow! Smiting Boonie brings out the heavy artillery!

My ILB team does not suck! I just haven't been paying attention. Things'll soon change.

And Washburn's first start was great! Thanks for asking!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 14 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lofton narrowly beat out Steve Finley for the starting CF job. Finley is a fox.

I dunno, Boonie just seems so lovable, like you wanna give him a hug. Haha I know, I was just waiting for an excuse to tease you about that. Guess who I'm going home to watchon WGN right now?????

B-b-b-but the Giants have those French vanilla things! Endy story!

And wonderfully enough, we have son of Scully, Jon Miller who does a grebt Vin impression and out of all THREE of the Giants topnotch play-by-play guys (well, Joe Angel gets points for sounding like Jon Miller) is the best.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 00:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Kuip has the loveliest voice out of the bunch -- but, I don't remember why, he sometimes gets on my nerves, like last night when he spazzed out on this flyball to left, made me think it was a homer. Speaking of homers, I <3 Krukow though.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

Russ Ortiz homer? Adorable!

Jon Miller (of ESPN Jon Miller?) does regular Giants games? That's great. I wuv wuv wuv Jon Miller.

OK, here's the thing about the Jints uniforms: The french vanilla is cool but it is very arrogant of them to run around in the home uniforms without the names on the back. That p*sses me off! Sure, I hate the Yankees, but only the Yankees have earned the right to not put their names on their backs. The SAN FRANCISCO Giants are not the Yankees or event he New York Giants, I don't care about what happened at the Polo Grounds or whatever, it's lame.

Now the Dodger uniforms have something XXX-tra special that you can't see on television and you can't even see at a game unless you are super super up close like in kissing range and that is this: You know how the Dodger uniforms are so super bright blue on white and with the super-amazing RED number? (So American and baseball-ly, sigh.) Anyway the CRAZY part is that the super bright effect is enhanced ever so subtly because the STITCHING that attaches the letters, the "Dodgers" and the number to the uniform is NOT matching same-color (e.g. blue or red) but it is WHITE!!!! Contrast top-stitching that's insanity! They are the only team that uses WHITE to stitch the letters and numbers on.

Uniforms are very important. Next installment: Socks, or the Importance of Being Mike Remlinger.
