And the Bruins inevitable loss in the first round to New Jersey. Ottawa wins this year. Ottawa and Detroit in the finals.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't see Ottawa beating Toronto. It's going to be a strange playoff this year. Lots of upsets, I'm betting. I can see Tampa making the semis (and I'm only half cut). The Toronto/Philadelphia series will probably be the most entertaining 1st round series, followed by the Boston/Jersey series.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b-but Ottawa is "tough" now with Rob Ray. Like he is going to get much playing time....

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I am looking forward to Toronto/Philadelphia, that should be good. It would be entertaining if Anaheim upset Detroit, but I probably shouldn't expect that to happen.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if "Uni-brow" Domi will cheap shot anyone this year. Or Darcy Fucker.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh the playoffs are beginning? This is when Aaron W. starts paying attention to hockey. GO WINGS!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob Ray is funny. Remember the incident in Buffalo when a fan got on the ice and wanted to go to the Sabre's bench to congratulate them? Ray came up behind the guy, and we counted 32 punches to the guy's head before they pulled him off. NOW THAT'S HOCKEY!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Hockey isn't hockey unless someone is getting pummeled. I wish Gary Bettman would get that by now.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

They'll never take fighting out of the game. The day they do is the day they lose a lot of fans. Except the Russians.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

NOODLES TO THREAD FOR FUCK SAKE.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Domi rarely cheap shots, hell he scores more often then he cheap shots, though this year thats not saying alot.

Leafs will roll over Ottawa this year, Domi shadows Ray and Gilmore beats the living fuck out of some prima donna to be choosen later from their team. I'd like to say Leafs win the cup but I have no clue about compitetion in the west.

Ottawa just don't have heart, like Jagr.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Pulling for an all Canadian Finals... what if...?

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Domi rarely cheap shots? Hmmpf.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

[I'm removing that pic as its the wrong thread, but if you wanna see it go look on the party thread so this one stayes imageless]
Muhahahaha

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Domi rarely cheap shots compared to Tucker, or more professional cheap shotters like Ulf, McSorely, Gordie Howe or < Don Cherry>the whole wack of the visor wearing European hacks < /Don Cherry>

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Tucker is the master.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

What's worse: people who take dives or people who take cheap shots? To be honest the former bothers me even more than the latter, which is why I can't stand Fedorov.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, he has his ugly moments, but Domi scored fifteen goals this year and generally works hard in the defensive end. I think he's much more than the one-dimensional goon that the haters want to characterize him as.

Tucker, on the other hand, is indefensible, and makes me ashamed to be a Leaf fan.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Domi has really improved his play over the years. The Bruins almost had him this past summer. Heck, we got Oliwa instead.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Every player on NJ has a plus/minus rating of +something. Ugh.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Tucker is the master.

Don't kid yourself, Ulf was the cheapest hockey player to ever play at the professional level, Gordie was second but he was a great player all round. Tucker just has to realize he's no King.

King and Domi, what a combo that was for the Rangers and Leafs.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there anything bad about Joe Thornton, other than that he should really be scoring more goals considering his contract?

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Not a damn thing wrong with Joe, I just hope the cheap ass Bruins keep paying him and he plays his entire career here.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

He makes me want to be a Bruins fan. I'll stop beating you off now, Chris.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry dude!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

BINGO

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

20 minutes

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

LET'S GO PENS!

aw, fuck.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

An all Canada final would be a miracle. Too many beasts in the West for the Oilers and Canuckleheads to get thru. The goddamn dread wings have looked impossible to beat in the last couple months. Best 1st round match ups: mah Blooz vs Vancouver and Flyers vs Leafs.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I like seeing Nicole get pumped up for hockey, it's like there's this ravening beast just waiting to explode. Maybe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

the stanley cup goes through the west. although the west champion might be so beat up if dallas, detroit and colorado beat up on each other that the east could sneak away with the cup. i am still smarting over the leafs loss to carolina last year.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Toronto beats Phillie 5-3

And Ottawa, ouch, shut out by the lowly New York Islanders.
Not the most auspicious start for the Sens.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 10 April 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The Avs are peaking at just the right moment.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope so. I've got a lot of Colorado players in my work playoff pool.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The Wings are sliding a bit. 5-5 tie with Nashville. OT loss to Chicago. John Buccigrass picks an Anaheim upset. I don't see it, but we shall see...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Broooooons lose. What else is new. If the Devils are up by the start of the third period, forget it no chance in hell the B's are going anywhere. Also sucks that we have a tandem of third rate goalies starting for us. Shields isn't exactly Roy or Brodeur, nor is Timmy "Tip-toes" Thomas. This is going to suck. Hmmm, which bandwagon to get on. My minds made up... Ottawa.

Mogilny is a machine...I like Toronto's chances too, but they blow it every year. Pat Quinn will blow a gasket this year.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 10 April 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

We blew it last year I'll admitt.

Best part of the win last night was Tucker getting knocked out of the line up. Followed by Domi scoring.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 10 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Losing Antropov is fucking HUGE.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 April 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that sucked big hairy moose cock. This is where Gilmore would be very handy.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 10 April 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Anaheim - Detroit in overtime. Be still my beating heart.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 11 April 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"good god, thats....thats Ulf Samuelssons music. Ulfie just ran out on the ice and hit Yzerman with a foreign object."

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 11 April 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ulf did time as a Wing!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 11 April 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ducks! Ha! (I predict the wings roll over them in 4 straight now.)

bnw (bnw), Friday, 11 April 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Gah!! 3 ot disaster!

Lots o' upsets to start off... 'Lanche going down too!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 11 April 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, this is fucking insane.

Wild v. Capitals final anyone?

jm (jtm), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The insinuation that Ottawa will make the finals is beyond absurd. The only way the lame-ass Senators will see the Stanley Cup finals is if they buy tickets. Skill alone doesn't win cups it also takes balls and Ottawa ain't got none. I hope they're looking forward to their annual whuppin' from the Leafs - that is if they can beat the Isles.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Blues are whipping Canuckleheads. Yay! Devils are the only higher seed to win a game.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 11 April 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Geez the Dead Wings just went down 0-3.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Cujo = shit.

Oh well it was fun while it lasted. Nice run by the Wings since '97.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Cujo should have stayed where he belonged. Maybe when Toronto wins the Cup, some of the guys will let him have his picture taken beside it or something - like a tourist at the hockey hall of fame.

GO LEAFS GO!!!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey man when the Wings get bounced I'll be rooting for the Leafs or the Sens. I wanted to meet you guys last year instead of the darn Whalercanes.

It just sucks when your team is out in the first damn round.

Buccigrass was right!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha haaaaa - seeing cujo fail is almost as important to me as seeing the leafs win.
edmonton is another one that's making me happy.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

How can you not love Edmonton? They may never win another Cup - curse of the small market, but there is no team in the league more fun to watch.

I'm also really excited that Paul Kariya is probably going to see the second round!!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

My hopes upthread for Anaheim have been realized! QUACK QUACK QUACK!

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You should be around here, Nicole. It's like everyone suddenly realized we have a hockey team (which given the record of the team in its first ten years is perfectly understandable). Rather a bit like the Angels last year, see.

But, please -- no duck calls. I just call the team 'Anaheim' because ever since it was announced back in 1993 or whenever it was, I have damned the phrase 'M****y D***s' unto perdition because it is THE LAMEST GODDAMN NAME EVER. Fuck you Disney.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a lame name, but so is Red Wings! It's kind of like a filthy porn name, if you think about it.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

!!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe now Detroiters will turn their attention to the TRULY great team in our fair city (well, even though they play in Auburn Hills)...

Your Eastern Conference champion DETROIT PISTONS

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a lame name, but so is Red Wings! It's kind of like a filthy porn name, if you think about it.

ARRRRRRRRRRRGH

But the fact there is only one wing on the logo is even more distressing in context.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha haaaaa - seeing cujo fail is almost as important to me as seeing the leafs win.

Didn't Gilmroe score that beautiful wrap around goal ten years ago against Cujo?

Good to see the Leafs finally playing a bit better. Wouldn't want to play NY in the second round, their going to be pumped once they beat the Sens.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bruins are done tonight. Go Ottawa.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Correction: Go Away Ottawa!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't count the Wings out yet. And the Ducks still have a loooooooong way to go to the Cup. Cinderellas rarely get out of the West.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Detroit can win so long as they have the right goalie on the ice...and his name is Manny Legace. Too bad Lewis would never have the guts to throw him out there.

Erick H (Erick H), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

if that happens i will puke with delight¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I could see it going like six games. Hard to imagine the Wings just getting swept; Anaheim may feel a little tight about trying to wrap it up at home. So the Wings could take game 4 and then of course they go back to Detroit and they might take that one. But anything beyond that is too much to ask, I think. They're toast.

I'm still trying to figure out what the heck Cujo was doing out of his crease last night.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't count the Wings out yet. And the Ducks still have a loooooooong way to go to the Cup

I never said they would win the cup, but I do think they just may upset Detroit.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, the Bruins pulled one out of their collective asses last night. Over Thursday night. I have no confidence in this scrapheap we call a team.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

is anybody watching the toronto-flyers game? i'm going mental here without tv.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 17 April 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

cuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrtiiiiiiiiiiiisssssss

cuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrtiiiiiiiiiiiisssssss

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah yeah yeah, pretty quick on the trigger finger there, eh dyson?

Believe me Detroiters take the schadenfreude as a compliment.

And yes Cujo doth blow.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

kiiiiilllllll

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

No wonder people are calling him Benji now! But I think even Benji might have had a better series than he did.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 17 April 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Put that in your fucking pipe and smoke it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

That 1st OT between the Flyers & Toronto was the best period of non-scoring hockey I've ever seen.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That game showed why I always take Svehla (if possible) in my pool. How many of those guys were on the Sudafed out there? Christ almighty!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Put that in your fucking pipe and smoke it.

Hahaha! Go Leafs! Game sevens all around!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that Svehla's been a scoring machine this series, mind you.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm here in DC and Caps owner Ted Leonsis is bitching about a) the refs, b) the building being 2500 short of a sellout, etc. etc. and he has a right to be pissed after paying Jagr $10M for 2 goals in 6 playoff games. the torch is passed: Pat Lafontaine --> Peter Nedved --> Martin St. Louis.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ted Leonsis needs to realize it's the year of the 'Ning!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on, Neil: god bless the 'Ning, but they can't handle the NJ Devils!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Fear Martin St Louis! The apocalypse is nigh!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

...bb...bb...but he's so small!

(ps J0hn Darn1elle stop avoiding W, DC!)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

LalalaFontaine is from St. Louis. Martin St. Louis is not, but someday I pray he will wear the Blue Note.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's fridge is stocked??!! We've got the motherlode tonight!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

work tomorrow will be wonderful if the avalanche finish off their masterful choke job.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeez my hopes for an all Canadian final are going out the window slowly...

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

it's good to see chris osgood break someone else's heart.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you an Isles fan?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

red wings

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Wings??!! And Osgood "broke your heart"?! He won us a freakin' Cup for Christ sakes. Man, I love love love LOVE the Red Wings, but other Wings fans can really be tough to take.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit, just as I post -- WILD!!!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

argh!! the blues are the bosox of the nhl! Wings out, Avs out, and the Blues still choke! (the only good thing is that they didn't just get an unlucky bounce like so many years, the canucks deserved it.) (god if there's a devils-wild final.... trap city zzzzz)

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Just to clarify my take: Keith - you are NUTS. I don't know when you became a Wings fan; I'm 31 myself - my daddy took me to my first game back in like '81. So I lived through the "dead Wings" years. They were very, very painful. Goose Loonies, Bobblin' Bob Essensa, Tim Cheveldae, yes San Jose. All very painful memories. But Osgood eventually carried us to a Cup, one of three now in the last almost 50 years. Think about that. Think about how hard it is to accomplish. Look at what happened to the greatest goalie I've ever seen play - Patrick Roy - tonight.

If you can't appreciate Osgood, if you're not grateful, if you think he "broke your heart" - your just spoiled and deluded.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I love love love LOVE the Red Wings, but other Wings fans can really be tough to take.

Other Wings fans are the reason I cannot root for them anymore. They're more obnoxious than Dave Matthews Band fans or even Grateful Dead fans.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the philly phans seem quite obnoxious aswell. have you ever noticed at their games the fans don't so much cheer for their team as much as taunt the visitors?

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Obnoxious and yet FUNNY AS HELL (**SARCASM**). Just ask Michael Irvin about Philly fans.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Have y'all seen the Light(ning) yet or does ye need more convincing?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

You will never convert us!

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lighting are exactly the kind of team that NJ is designed to defeat. With most of their offense limited to one spectacular line, NJ will focus their best checking line and defensemen on St. Louis, Prospal & Lecavalier. While the games will be low scoring NJ will exploit Tampa's defensive weaknesses and get enough by Khabi to take the series. As a Devils fan I'm much happier to see Tampa than the Flyers.

Usually it's the East that completely falls apart with upsets and the like. I'm glad the West is getting that treatment this year.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

osgood was always the weak spot, did the wings ever have an advantage when he was paired against roy or brodeur or even an overrated stiff like kolzig(sp?)? no. he's mediocre and his stats since he left the wings prove it. he was aided by the best puck control team in hockey and the fact that he never had to face more than 20 shots a game, surely you remember all the long distance goals? al macinnis st louis, brendan shanahan rescued him there. i'd probably take greg stefan and korrado micalef over him. 81? reed larson, willie huber, mike foligno(not yet part of the worst trad ein franchise history), john o'grodnick, dale mccourt, those are the glory years when they were lucky to get 38 points in a season. when larson shot evryone would skate in front of the net because they knew that was the one place he wouldn't hit, baby huey 6'6" 250 pounds and he never placed a check in his life.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

it was a point of pride that in a league of 19 teams when 16 made the playoffs it was common that both the wings and leafs would miss the playoffs.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Hell yeah Reed Larson! I've got a practice puck that Reed Larson gave me at that first ever game I went to! I still remember the score, we beat Winnipeg 5-4. My dad took me there early to watch the shoot-around. As the team was coming off the ice, we went down to above the tunnel, and as Larson was coming off the ice he pointed at me and threw one of the practice pucks to me! One of my favorite memories evah.

Ok, Keith, you all good. But I still think you need to lay off Osgood. Yeah the bad goals in St. Louis and Dallas were brutal (I forgive the San Jose debacle because he was young). The fact is he got the job done in '98 - won the hardest trophy to win in sports - and I'll continue to respect him for that regardless of how good the overall team was. Is he an elite goaltender? Heck no. And this year he's right there with Roy and CuJo - playing golf. But I still root for the guy; moreso than I do for somebody like, say, Martin Lapointe.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 24 April 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I just get the sinking feeling that losing in the first round will usher in the end of an era for the AVs. I think this is only the second time since they moved from Quebec that they haven't made it to the Western Conference Finals. Guys like Sakic and Roy are starting to fade.

Its sad because they're the only great team around here anymore.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Thursday, 24 April 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ningless

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 25 April 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ducks!!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 25 April 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The damned Maple Leafs broke my heart again! You'd think after a lifetime of disappointment it would get easier but it's not. I swear to God being a Leafs fan is sometimes like being in an abusive relationship. I just can't stop myself from going back for more. "It'll be different next year"...

...The Wild are a great story though as is Anaheim. I don't really care who wins it now as long as it's not Ottawa.

When will the Cup come back to Toronto?! When??!!!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 25 April 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

5 ot's and Anaheim pulls it off. Amazing. JS Giguere, MVP.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn. I went to bed after the 2nd OT, got a bad cold and couldn't stay up. Was it as exciting as that Pittsburgh/Philadelphia 4 OT game last year or the year before?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

no idea John, I was fast asleep at the end of the regulation.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The prospect of Anaheim going all the way given that the Angels play about, what, two blocks and a huge parking lot away is very very bemusing. I fear the Disney miniseries.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 25 April 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The hot rumour around Toronto that will NOT go away: the real reason that Corson left the Maple Leafs stems back to a major rift that occured within the team about three months ago, right after Shayner slept with Alex Mogilny's wife.

I don't normally pay rumours like these any attention, but I've heard it from three very reliable sources now, and it'd certainly explain a LOT, especially Mogilny's departure from the team a few months back for personal reasons that he absolutely refused to disclose. Anyway, people tend to forget that Corson's got a reputation around the NHL for being a serious off-hours party fiend; this is the same guy that used to hang out with John Kordic in the Habs' heyday, after all.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 25 April 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ah Kordic.

two weeks pass...
For the first time in franchise history the Ducks actually look quite Mighty. Giguere can't be beat!!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 15 May 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Jiggy is amazing. Him vs. Brodeur would be a hellova battle. I foresee a couple zero-zero triple overtimes if Jersey gets through.

Also: "I wouldn't count the Wings out yet. And the Ducks still have a loooooooong way to go to the Cup. Cinderellas rarely get out of the West. "

I am an idiot.

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 17 May 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't be so hard on yourself. Nobody saw this coming. Hell, I picked the stupid, break-my-heart-every-year Maple Leafs to win the thing in spite of the fact that they haven't won a cup since '67. Now, that's an idiot.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 19 May 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember when we all saw Giguere beat the Wings in game one and we all said "aaaw, how cute! he just won his first playoff game! Isn't that nice! Well the Wings will have them in 5."

Holy shit, dude.

jm (jtm), Monday, 19 May 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

First the Angels, now this. Living in OC is strange sometimes. I keep seeing all these signs around offering tickets for Ducks game in triple digit amounts, and increasing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 May 2003 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

re the corson adultery, wasn't brindamour traded from the flyers cause he refused to play with lindros after eric slept with his wife? i think he was also with tocchet's wife.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 19 May 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think those rumours are more along the lines of urban legends. It seems as though every team has some guy who got traded because he banged another guy's wife. Quite a few years ago there was talk that the reason Al Iafrate left the Leafs was because Gary Leeman did his wife. Then again, maybe it is all true and that's just what hockey wives do.

Getting back to the playoffs, I'm glad to see that Alfreddson has continued the proud Ottawa tradition of having the captain completely disappear when his team needs him most. Stanley Cup in Ottawa? Yeah right! Brodeur's got their number. The Senators' season is only going to last about another 60 minutes or so.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 19 May 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
I think the Ducks will actually pull this one off. The momentum has completely swung in their direction and I think Brodeur is smarting a bit from back-to-back losses. I've never seen him look as beatable as he did in game 4.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 5 June 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Giguere gets the Smythe!!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that was tough to watch.

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

As much as I hate the devils (2nd most hated thing in Hockey after Gary Betmann) at least a team called Mighty Ducks didnt get their name on the cup.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I seriously hate the Devils and would have preferred any other team over them. Even Colorado.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I admit it would have been nice to imagine the Stanley Cup and the World Series trophy essentially across the street from each other, but Chris's larger point about screwing over Disney at any opportunity is well taken.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Now, the fallout.

Oates retires

Thomas Retires.

FAs bolt from Orange County now that their stock is through the roof. Many sign with the Rangers.

The Rangers tank.

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Even though it didn't work out the way they would have liked, congratulations to the Ducks for an unbelievable run. I feel bad for Oates and Thomas who will both probably retire without a ring. On the plus side, Giguere made a name for himself on hockey's biggest stage and in spite of his poor performance in games 1-5, Paul Kariya demonstrated in game 6 what serious hockey fans have known for the past 10 years - that he's one of the best players alive right now.

Even though I don't like them much, the Devils are an efficient hockey machine and in spite of his penchant for late and malicious hits, there are few better captains than Scott Stevens.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

nine months pass...
Ok, its playoff time. Make your predictions. Bruins in 6 over the Habs. Bruins take the cup this year.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Wings give Stevie Y one last opportunity to hoist the cup before the lockout effectively forces him and his one knee into retirement.

alexandra s (alexandra s), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, they've been playing horribly, Kariya's hurt, Aebischer is a question mark, Tony Granato seems in over his head, but: this is Peter Forsberg's world and we're just living in it.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not like Stevie is Ray Bourque or something--he's won a few Cups already. Screw the Wings. Go Preds, whoever you and your fans are.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

First round:
Tampa, Montreal, Philly and Toronto in the East
Detroit, St Louis, Vancouver and Dallas in the West

Semis:
Habs over Tampa, Leafs over Flyers in the East.
Blues over Wings, Canucks over Stars in the West.

Toronto wins the East, Vancouver the West. Don Cherry gets very excited. Leafs take the cup in 6 games. Riots and looting ensue in Toronto. Army called in to bring order. Life continues apace.

Yes, the weather is nice here in my little dreamworld. Thanks for asking!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Mind you, I have been living in the UK for over a year, and have seen about 5 regular season games, so my predictions are somewhat arbitrary (or, as the case may be, completely unfounded in reality and based entirely on fantasy).

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't watched as much hockey as I would have liked lately either.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Me neither. And even though I've been without it for years, I still miss having the CBC and Coaches Corner for hockey viewing. The ABC/ESPN stuff just isn't the same.

alexandra s (alexandra s), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It would be so terrible to have to rely on ABC/ESPN!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Blues over Wings

I would die of happiness if this occurred.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The ABC/ESPN stuff just isn't the same.

At least it isn't FOX with the glowing puck (or Sportschannel way back when which no cable companies even carried). I don't care much for Gary Thorne, but Clement is good and Melrose is worth a laugh.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

That was a painful time...

alexandra s (alexandra s), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Voukon was great for the Preds last night, but not good enough. I think the last in-your-face goal by Robert Lang will be indicative of the rest of the playoff games between Detroit and Nashville, particularly if Legace can maintain his performance.

webcrack (music=crack), Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Wings looked like themselves in the third period. Between Steve Sullivan's missed penalty shot and that Lang goal, it doesn't look like this is the Preds' year.

alexandra s (alexandra s), Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like Nashville is about to be knocked out of the running. I won't be surprised if it ends up that the wings took this one in the first two minutes of the game and it finishes 2-0 wings.

Man, two game sevens coming up. Should be fun!!

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i just watched highlights from the flames - canucks game 7 in '89 which is probably the greatest game ever played.
i am amazed the red wings showed some heart and came back, last year they just went to sleep.
is kiprusoff this year's giguere?
this is the only time of year i wish i was stillin Detroit and able to pick up CBC. Espn's hockey coverage sucks, Bill Clement is a hack. I miss Harry Neale and Bob Cole.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

if canucks win game 7 then red wings play the nordiques in round 2.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't live in Detroit anymore Keith? All this time I thought you were still there.

Yeah, the red boys finally put forth a little effort today. I think privately they're probably glad to be playing behind Joseph at this point...

Clement doesn't add anything, but I do like Thorne's calls. He does a good "score!" And that is important.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, hold the phone .... Here comes Calgary...

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It was an incredible game, but I couldn't enjoy it after it was 4-0 I was so choked at the, um, chokers wearing white.

And thank you Mo, but my god, that was unbelievably tense, fast, insane hockey!

Game 7 coming up. I actually wish I was neutral in this series, as I'd appreciate it more, I think.

David A. (Davant), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

bnw (bnw), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this a record for the most game 7s in one round or something?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

How can anyone hate the 'Nucks? I mean, a team with the urbane Jaarko Ruutu, the gracious Matt Cooke, the level-headed Dan Cloutier, the razor sharp Ed Jovanovski, the gentle Todd Bertuzzi and the magnanimous Marc Crawford, all with the guileless and loveable Brian Burke at the helm, ought to be a club tailor made for attracting universal love, no?

Heh.

Anyway, hating a team that is small market and largely underachieving throughout its history is kind of like hating Leicester City or Luton Town. If you're gonna hate a Canadian team, why not hate the Toronto "Centre of the Universe" Make-Me-Laughs?

David A. (Davant), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the most amazing thing about that game that after both goalies took turns completely collapsing collapsing, and then both recovered to play the equivalent of a full game without allowing a goal (with many good chances on both ends). Kiprusoff shut out Van for 31/2 periods!

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i was being interviewed for a job at a respectable vancouver agency. and it was goin something great, i tells ya¡

so the conversation turns to hockey, as it does in canada. they ask if i was a leafs fan and i (playing it down) more or less said "kinda". then they bring up how sundin, a matter of days earlier, had removed the recently acquired may from the canuks line up. it was going fine until they began accusing sundin of all sorts of dastardly deeds. this i could not stand for. i told them it was a clean hit & the smiles on their faces just melted away - things just snowballed from there. on my way out i saw the prez's office - chalk full of decades worth of canuks paraphernalia.

they said they'd call me but they were lying through their filthy canuk loving mouths.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

CALGARY! Hate to see it happen at the expense of another Canadian team but oh yeah! Jarome Iginla is the man! With Montreal having beaten Boston, both of my first round upsets came through. All that's left now is for the Leafs to take out the trash tomorrow night and all will be well.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, okay, dyson, I agree that sucks. Being a Leafs fan in Canada is like being a Man United fan in England -- no-one believes you're not a gloryhunter! (I'm not, by the way, I'm a Manc from birth, but hey...).

And Mr Noodles: instead of Steve Moore to thread, how about "entire Colorado Avalanche spin machine to thread"? Not only that, but is such a small franchise as the Vancouver Canucks (plus all their fans) being judged by one admittedly gutless hit? Plus... note how the blue collar but highly skilled Bertuzzi is vilified by a classist media for his hit on the Ivy League journeyman Steve Moore. Hmm. Whatever.

Anyway, congrats to Calgary, and their fans, and especially to Jarome Iginla (a monstrous game exactly when needed), for the best series of the first round. That OT winner hurt, but what a fucking series! Canadian hockey may lack the cash, but it sure makes up for that in passion.

To paraphrase Alex Ferguson after United won the Treble in '99, "hockey... bloody hell!"

David A. (Davant), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah: Go Habs Go!

David A. (Davant), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to say that the Canucks were, for once, legitimately outplayed and outmatched in a playoff series, but no, they fucking choked. Argh. Points to Calgary for playing hard for the whole game, many nights in a row, and not taking untimely penalties. They were the better team.

Hey, at least our third goalie looked good. Maybe he'll last a while longer!

I'm going with the Habs now, I think.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to say that the Canucks were, for once, legitimately outplayed and outmatched in a playoff series, but no, they fucking choked.
You know, they did score to tie with 3 seconds left in the game

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

6 seconds, but the point remains the same - they didn't give up.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Being a Leafs fan in Canada is like being a Man United fan in England -- no-one believes you're not a gloryhunter!"

I've suffered with the leafs for about the past 20 years. The key word there is suffer. Glory hunters are much better off jumping on another bandwagon. I'm not sure what's so glorious about having your heart broken every spring, getting so close that you can almost taste it only to have Wayne Gretzky or Martin Brodeur, or whoever's turn it is that year ensure that the torment continues for at least one more season. I see a guy in a Man U shirt and I wonder whether or not he's a longtime supporter. When I see someone in a Leafs jersey I just figure they're either from southern Ontario or a masochist.

Toronto...needs...a...Cup...NOW!!!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

True, but if they'd kept at it right through the third, heroics wouldn't have been necessary. I was a great moment, as was game 6's OT winner, but I don't know if their play through the series merited a game 7 OT chance like that.

of course, I'm just being cranky, and somewhat unfairly, but hey, it's 10 years since this team overperformed at all.

I just have to remember that cheering for the Canucks ultimately means hoping for Orca Bay Sports and Ent. inc to grow their profit margin...

I'll end up rooting for Toronto if they're the only Can. team left, but I'm not a fan of the team. They've always embodied, maybe wrongly on my part, the attitude that "no matter who's really playing the game well, it's Tie Domi and Darcy Tucker who REALLY matter, 'cause they don't take no shit!". I probably just get that from Don Cherry, though, who unfortunately represents the Leafs to most of the country.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Vancouver's a young, skilled club. They'll be back.

If Don Cherry represents the Leafs across the rest of Canada then it's no wonder they are so despised in other quarters. I like Don Cherry but he's just like your drunk great-uncle who gets away with saying all kinds of ridiculous and often offensive stuff because he's too old to be taught any different. Everyone just kind of laughs uncomfortably and says things like: "you don't really mean that do you?"

I'm still sometimes surprised by the passion with which people in other parts of the country hate the Leafs and Toronto in general. To be perfectly honest, most Torontonians don't spend much time thinking about other parts of the country (which is probably why everyone hates us) with the exception of maybe Montreal who we secretly fear is cooler than us, and maybe Vancouver.

If Toronto gets eliminated I will gladly cheer for any of the Canadian teams remaining except Ottawa. That would take a real effort on my part.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

And Mr Noodles: instead of Steve Moore to thread, how about "entire Colorado Avalanche spin machine to thread"?

There too busy fighting the Vancouver spin machine. Steve Moore doesn't really have anything to do at the moment since he can't won't play NHL hockey ever again, thanks to Bertuzzi.

note how the blue collar but highly skilled Bertuzzi is vilified by a classist media for his hit on the Ivy League journeyman Steve Moore. Hmm. Whatever.

How much does Bertuzzi make per year? Im sure its a bit much to be calling millionaires blue collar. It was all because a rookie caught a captain with his head down with a clean check. Bertuzzi meanwhile committed the cheapest act in hockey not done by Hextall.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh I hate living in New England. Its a series of never ending disappointments. Im moving to Canada.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Bertuzzi has been cheap shotting for years. He's a real force until confronted by another player his size, then he scampers to the bench.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

For us Wings fans, of course, the best thing about last night's Calgary-Vancouver game is that now our team gets to play a club that just finished a grueling 7-game series, including triple OT in the 6th, instead of arch-rivals the Avs in the next series. Calgary played well, but not well enough to stand up to Detroit. My money's on the Wings for the next series.

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What's scary is Domi being really damm good on the ice right now. I think we have someone playing in a Domi mask because its not like him to move like that.

Chris, its not that bad, at least Boston won a cup in the 70s (two of them).

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Devils gone, Bruins gone, guess I'm a Flyers fan now.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what I mean, dyson; Sundin doesn't get nearly the attention he should, because there's this mistaken attitude that Tucker is the HEART, which matters more than the skill. Again to be fair, that's probably just coming from Don Cherry, about whom J-rock is OTM.

I think the attitude towards Toronto is really based upon Don Cherry, Harry Neale, the whole HNIC braintrust. Cherry, esp. has the attitude that no matter what, Toronto is the rightful heir, and they're the only one's standing up for what hockey *really* is, whatever that means. The poor team has to fight that most of all, because it's an image entirely not of their making.

It's been hard this year to support the Canucks, because I think they do engage in cheap shots. Bertuzzi at times, definitely, but Jovanovski's done something stupid in almost every game I've seen. The Bertuzzi incident, as it's known here, felt really fair; he blew it, and the team suffered because he simply couldn't get a grip. I get the sense that Crawford encourages this crap; i.e. whatever they can get away with is a-ok. It's doubly annoying because they're a skilled team, and shouldn't have to resort to tacky stuff.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I still can't get over that Vancouver / Calgary game last night. How often has a team salvaged a SEASON with six seconds left?? Although that OT winner sure was anti-climactic. What a series. As a WIngs fan I definitely have reason to fear Calgary, especially if Kiprusoff continues to play well. They always suck against hot goalies. Anyway, I hope tonight's finale is half as good.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

They always suck against hot goalies.

They do, which is why I have my doubts about whether they'll do well against Calgary.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay Toronto! The better team won (again). I'm a bit worried about Philly but I think it should be okay. And for the record, Mats Sundin and Gary Roberts are the heart of the Maple Leafs.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

dyson: Don Cherry. I swear I remember a rant from last year's playoffs during a Leafs game where Tucker had taken a few silly penalties and was being a pest. Ron Maclean commented on this, suggesting that it was obstructing the game, the leafs couldn't get a rush together, whatever, and Don went off on how Tucker was absolutely wonderful, a *real* hockey player, not some ponce, blah blah. Typical Cherry rant.

I mean, it's Don Cherry, so grain of salt and all that. It's just an unfortunate impression I've had. all aside, good luck to the leafs against Philly.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I would just like to point out my pre-playoff prediction upthread:

First round:
Tampa, Montreal, Philly and Toronto in the East

OK, I was wrong about the West, but I'm an Eastern Conference guy anyway. GO LEAFS GO.

Amazing comeback by the Wings in the Detroit/Calgary game. Finally, the almost invincible Kiprusoff is opened up with 5 goals against in one game, though it did take a couple of two-man advantage Detroit power plays. Now, can Calgary regain their footing on home turf, or does Detroit have the momentum to bring it to them and take the series lead?

San Jose brilliant tonight, the goal rebounding of off Aebischer's back was great. While it's nice to see the Avs get served, I'm a little concerned that the Wings will be up against this team, assuming they manage to knock Calgary off.

go flames¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Cujo really was unbelievable last night. That game was awesome, incredible action in the 3rd period and, surprisingly, for stretches of the overtime period. Just a war of attrition in that series really, and the Flames came out on top. Hatcher needs to go NOW. What a worthless slug that guy is.

Anyway, I'm rooting for the Flames and Leafs now.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That Flyers-Leafs game Sunday was as thorough a shitkicking as I've seen in the playoffs in a while.

Yeah, I'm pleased to see the Wings go down, but I kinda feel bad for Cujo, who to my knowledge handled the whole Hasek thing very professionally. And damn I feel bad about Stevie Y.

xp: haha, Flames + Leafs = Gary Bettman's nightmare

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

A Flames-Leafs finals would be great.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed. I think the Flames will have a better shot at the Avs then the Sharkies (who can throw the underdog mentality + hot goalie right back at 'em.)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

indeed. leafs are toast tho (in game 7).

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

What a sad way for the Wings to go. Several stupidly missed shots early in the game (Holmstrom) will be on players' consciences. Cujo deserves mucho cred; he outplayed Kiprusoff, which is a feat, but he can't make the offense work. I never paid too much attention to Hatcher before, heard the hype when he was added to the Wings roster, and I have to echo Broheems; he has been a big disappointment, and played like he kept forgetting what he was doing aside from throwing a decent hit here and there. Not enough to help out significantly.

also, dyson OTM I believe, Philly dominated last game and the leafs were scrambling. That's a hard beatdown to jump back from.

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

so: will the Avs become the third club in majorish North American sports to survive a 3-0 deficit in a seven-game series?????

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

They're the last of the dreaded Colorado/Detroit/Dallas/NewJersey monster left standing.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

My money's on San Jose. I have a feeling the final series will be San Jose - Tampa Bay, actually. I like San Jose, but it just doesn't seem right.

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

tampa bay is gonna stomp on the flyers. i think san jose may struggle more. the red wings need to unload all the geezers and start over. dandenault getting his faced stepped on was tough.

the fact that the dead wings didn't answer the flames when cujo was run at the end of game 4 said it all. at least the pistons outscored the red wings, but only barely.
keith primeau - what a spaz- i still remember when ken linseman knocked him over the boards, great moment. linseman weighed like 170 lbs and primeau was 230 lbs. dave lewis should go.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the fact that the dead wings didn't answer the flames when cujo was run at the end of game 4 said it all.

They were probably too tired. Your observation about the increased age on the team is unfortunately too apt, they just seem to run down during the playoffs. Skill is important, but you can't play all skill and no speed/energy; the wings need a couple of young and fast offensive players. When 40 year old Yzerman (tho still playing great) is out and replaced by 42 year old Thomas, there's something of a problem.

webcrack (music=crack), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

tampa bay is gonna stomp on the flyers

hmm, well. i think tampa should now be fully awakened from their week off, at least.

calgary's heart remains astonishing. but they're giving up too many shots, too many chances and i think it's going to ultimately cost them. kipper can't stop everything, can he?

so i just started playing (novice level) hockey for the summer and was assigned to--the red wings. which is okay, i guess. if i'd been assigned to the rangers i would have had to quit.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Congratulations Calgary! Even though my team tanked a while ago, I'm really hoping that the Flames can scratch out 4 more wins and that the Cup can spend the next 12 months on the right side of the border for a change. It has been far too long. Go get 'em boys!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it was definitely dumb, and a penalty. but a 5 minute major? I'm not so sure about that...

and to be honest, I didn't see the penalties that resulted in the 5 on 3, because stupid ABC never showed the replay. (Or maybe they did, and I just missed it) But a 5 on 3 a couple minutes into a finals game? Man, that's brutal.

Crap.

Oh well, congrats to Andreychuk. That's always nice to see. And Khabibulin's been a pretty great goalie for a while, so nice to see him rewarded. That 3rd period was awesome once Calgary scored their goal, great action. Calgary certainly had more than a few chances. but Bulin was up to the challenge.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

St. Louis' "We'll always walk together" line was pretty sweet. I don't think any other sport can touch the bond of a hockey team gone through the playoff wars.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

This is wrong man. It's just wrong. On the one hand, you've always gotta be happy for the players who won it. This is what they've been playing for since they were kids. On the other hand, winning the Stanley Cup probably couldn't mean less to the average resident of Tampa Bay. This would have meant more than life itself to the people of Calgary and it would have been a huge deal in the rest of Canada. The Stanley Cup in Florida?! Surely, that must be one of the signs of the appocalypse. AAAArrrrgggghhhh!!!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah. when Andreychuk raised the cup, the volume level like, barely increased. That's a shame. People can hate on the Wings all they want, but the two times they won at home, it was DEAFENING. Complete pandemonium. Oh well. Here's hoping Bill Davidson can win another championship in a week or so here...

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I've nearly given up on ever seeing the Cup in Toronto but I figured that it would make it back to Canada one day. I'd even settle for Detroit - it's close enough to the border, or Boston 'cause at least they've seen snow before.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Disappointment has started to fade a little. Calgary deserves to be congratulated for a good season and an incredible Cup run. The whole country hasn't been behind one team since the Olympics. It doesn't change the fact that THE STANLEY CUP DOES NOT BELONG IN FLORIDA, but we're just going to have to learn to deal with that. I can't imagine how they must be feeling in Alberta right now. *sigh*
