Whoreton was being annoying and unctious and over-friendly and kept trying to hug me and attach himself to my leg. Boy, was he in for a surprise when Handsome Soundartist turned up and gave me a card and a big kiss. Poor HSA felt sick and had to go home early, but me and Suze and Dara danced until dawn. Rock on. And got hijacked by this weird art installation thing on Southampton Row when we got off the bus. Crrrr-azy.

I like Kate too, a lot. Her Cornwall affection and insights highly contribute to that. But I do feel that she took things way too seriously. Because people didn't "get annoyed" by her screen name. It merely got posted in the unfinest display name thread. Which has it's own rules but is nowhere near as serious as she took it. Sadly.

it's not fair if people are targeted, but it is also true that it's possible to be too far into ilx at a given time, or the net in general. and people here react to reaction more than anything.

xp it's all very well to say "your skin is too thin" about these things but i don't think it counts as being "too far into ilx" to care if people are saying mocking/mean things about you, at all. if it had happened to me i'd have probably flipped tbh. maybe only a couple of people who you don't care about saying outright nasty things, but it's the cumulative effect of posters you thought you were okay with laughing along with them, and other posters not bothering to step in to defend you, that would actually hurt. and i think we've all been on ilx long enough to know that's not an irrational reaction, most of the posters here aren't "just" the internet that we should shrug off.

people do say nasty things here. everyone has prob been irate at some point or felt insulted. it's not justifying anything to say that people are best off ignoring this kind of thing, and that it happens less if you just rise above. the initial post was by no means intended to insult imo, nor were some of the subsequent ones. things crossed the line a little but people know kate will react, and will give them what they want sometimes before they even start crossing the line.

i think that's a good way of describing it xpost. personally i had already been irritated by the username, mainly cos it comes up in blue and if you're using ILX at work it's a fucking weird thing for a co-worker to see, it does leap off the screen. maybe there were other vagina related usernames but i can say honestly i'd never noticed them, maybe they didn't last long or weren't posting as much, no idea, or maybe I wasn't checking ILX at work on whatever threads they were on.

people talk about being "targeted" as if it's at all possible to become a target around here without putting a fair amount of effort into drawing attention to yourself (notwithstanding someone posting one thing that accidentally becomes a meme or whatever). she's a big personality and a frequent poster, that's by no means a "kick me" sign but you put yourself out there like that and you've gotta take some responsibility for whatever happens, good or bad.

idk why k8's friends seem intent on having a clusterfuck abt this when she has stated they're what made her quit. this is not a "safe space" to give yr supportive take, there's gonna be pushback.

i also think that the reason people kicked up as much as they did was due to the fact that k8s reaction was to basically come in and tell everyone that they were sexists or mysogynists or whatever - which a person who isnt a misogynist is going to find pretty insulting and offensive. imo getting labelled as a sexist is a much bigger slander than having someone dislike your temporary display name.

i thought the "i can't believe there's a 200 post clusterfuck about this" thing was reductive, because there were posts about the name, per typical thread territory, & then subsequent feedback loops of back and forths about whether or not it was a pile-on, whether it was an ad-hom, circumstances in which had the thread been active in the past it would have been used, &c &c -- so the discussion was veering from unfinest territory to necessary ripostes to charges regarding the above. it got long because it was complicated, not because of a much higher volume of disapproval towards the original DN.

imo there were ppl who wanted kate off the boards, and she basically just gave them the opening they needed. in other words, we all deserve each other.

i seriously dont think any of this was an attempt to get k8 to quit the boards, no matter what the result might have been.

Her display name got posted on a thread that is for posting display names you don't like. Kate overreacted by saying people were being sexist. It wasn't against Kate personally, it was just one person saying her dn stinked, which attracted some others who felt the same. If that is reason to leave the board - after all this very same board did for her in a personal, important way with the t-shirt thing, sticking by her, supporting her and by that showing that Kate is a highly valued and appreciated member of this community - then your priorities aren't right. I cannot understand why she chose to leave the board because of this. Because "this" was challops at most. Ppl booing a display name.

By which I mean that I regret the whole sordid thing happening in the first place, because I enjoy Kate's posts and highly value her.
