Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 10 April 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Butthole Surfers (favorite songs from various CDs)*
Lou Harrison keyboard music

*I still don't understand why more classic rock types (which I'm getting closer to being all the time, at least when I listen to rock at all) don't pick up on how good some of their work is. Okay, some stuff is going to be too unstructured or whatever, but some of it is phenomenal, musically.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 10 April 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

An old Raging Slab record and Quintron's Drum Buddy. I'm not sure what this means.

oops (Oops), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been going through my tapes, which I haven't touched in years. There's so much that I'd forgotten about and a few real treasures. One tape has all the flexi discs that I had and includes 'Sugar' by MBV, a (slightly) different version of the Cocteau's 'Ivo' and a version of 'Margaret's Injection' by the Kitchens. Also found a recording of A.R.Kane's 'Lollita' EP plus both the Pixies and Sonic Youth's Peel sessions from years ago (1988?).

Alfie (Alfie), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Steely Dan, "Almost Gothic" (I've had these lyrics bouncing through my head all morning):

When she speaks it's like the slickest song I ever heard
I'm hanging on her every word
As if I'm not already blazed enough
She hits me with the cryptic stuff
That's her style - to jerk me around

First she's all feel then she cools down
She's pure science with a splash of black cat
She's almost gothic and I like it like that

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

And Rockist, I'm entirely with you on the Butthole Surfers thing. Apart from the unstructuredness of it, I think the wacky-ass song titles might put off some classic-rockists, but based on their riffs and grooves and songy-songs, I could imagine hearing them sandwiched between Zep and Sabbath on the radio NO PROBLEM.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

A bunch of madrigals on a vinyl box I got from junk store Humana, including:

Guillaume de Machaut: Se Je Souspir'
Francseco Landini: Gram Piant'agli Ochi'
John Dunstable: 'Puisque Mon Amour' (also covered by the Super Madrigal Bros!)
Guillaume Dufay: Le Jour S'endort'

and a bunch of mp3s (minimal, atmospheric, rather good) by a guy called Tibor at

Tibormade

Also the Concerti Grossi Op. 6 Nr 1-2 by Handel, bought on an unmarked cassette at a junk store, apparently hand-recorded off the radio with an 'electret' condenser mike sometime in the 70s. Now I'm listening to some 70s 'schlager' from another cassette. I bought them, to be honest, for the labels, orange, white and black, with sans serif typefaces. And because 70s home-recorded audio cassette is a 'tragic folk medium', or 'tragischesvolksmedium'.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus (Momus), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I have some of those '70s BASF cassettes. One of them is an audio diary of sorts, made by a teenage girl in Queens in 1976. In parts of it you can hear the TV blaring in the background. Someone threw these tapes out about 5 years ago, and as soon as I saw them I immediately pocketed them.

Toby, listening to any record four times in a row is surely a prelude to either suicide or a killing spree. It's what the family always reports, though admittedly it's more often Marilyn Manson or some such than Fleetwood Mac.

Fred Frith (Gravity and part of Clearing), Boredoms (Vision Creation Newsun--I like Super AE a lot more so far), and now forcing myself to listen to a CD of Swan Lake that I bought a couple months back. I like parts, but overall I don't get along with the sound of a symphony orchestra.

Maybe I'm the sort of person who should just buy classical music's greatest hits collections.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 13 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Out of curiosity, what turns you off about the sound of an orchestra?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 13 April 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I know the question wasn't for me, but an orchestra A) brings to mind images of doctor's waiting rooms, B) is very monotonous sounding and C) it lacks guitars.

Erik, Sunday, 13 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do you find orchestras monotonous? It would seem that there is a wider variety of possible sounds/timbres and dynamics than in any other type of ensemble, especially a rock band. You can always have guitar concertos, too. Doctor's waiting rooms - that's an interesting one. I think I'd associate Chicago or something more with that.

now, Chopin - 24 Preludes (perf Maurizio Pollini)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Orchestras sound like shit when they're recorded live in a concert hall. (They're good when you're in a concert hall, but that's different. Those hall acoustics never translate well to record.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

it depends on the piece I'd say but chamber music is the thing I have most (solo piano as well).

listened to Iancu dumitrescu and that works. but its more 'electrified'. will post on the iancu thread sometime this week once I've finished hearing the 3CDs I've bought but its good so far.

then I heard a compilation an ILXOR made for me. Harry Pussy, prince and braxton/mitchell duo (very funny sounds being made by the latter) stood out.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Out of curiosity, what turns you off about the sound of an orchestra?

sundar, I think it's hopeless trying to get a sensible answer out of me with a question like this. First of all, I have a lot of problems with string sections, but I don't feel I can break the strings problem down any further. Even classical solo violin usually annoys me though. It sounds so perfect in a way--I hear the obvious immense skill involved--but the sound just pokes me emotionally in a way that I dislike. The wind instruments aren't much better. Some of them just sound too smug or something.

there is a wider variety of possible sounds/timbres and dynamics than in any other type of ensemble, especially a rock band.

There's a wide variety, but I don't think a lot of the sounds are very interesting or evocative. Generally speaking, I'll take a ney or a shakuhachi over a flute. Euroepan classical instruments almost remind me of what I've read about fashion models: they aren't supposed to have much visual character of their own; they should simply make a good "background" for this or that look. Western musical instruments are there to let the composer imprint his composition on them. Instruments from much of the rest of the world create an aura in their own right. This is all very sweeping though, and probably bullshit. Maybe because the ney is less familiar to me, it has an automatic otherworldly presence, but isn't the ney meant to sound otherworldly even to Arab listeners? I suspect so. And where does the violin fit in, since I like some non-Western (notably Arab) uses of that instrument, and like, say, Steve Reich's "Violin Phase" (though I can't think of many other examples of European classical takes on it that I really like). Actually, if I remember correctly, I think Dane Rudhyar said something not too different from this (except vastly more grounded in musical knowledge) in The Magic of Tone and the Art of Music (a work of music theory crankiana?). My theory about western classical instruments is probably a misappopriation of Rudhyar's ideas, come to think of it. And if western classical instruments have "less character" on their own, why do they so often make such a strong negative impression on me? And if it's just the instruments, why do I like them in other settings (Marshall Allen playing flute, the way some wood winds are used in some Baden Powell songs)?

Sorry to hijack the thread. Some of these Tchaikovsky melodies get through to me despite everything. Every time one of these big climaxes occurs though, I keep wanting to say, "Did you come?"

Sometimes I have thought, along the lines of what JBR said, that the problem is listening to recordings of symphony orchestras. But I know lots and lots of people who like classical music who enjoy it immensely in recorded form. Still, it would pay for me to at least occasioanlly drag myself to the orchestra.

The dynamic range is kind of a problem with recorded orchestral minute because one minute it will be barely audible and the next minute, it will be much too loud.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

But I know lots and lots of people who like classical music who enjoy it immensely in recorded form.

It sounds good if it's done in a studio and (and/or, I guess) it's well mic'd.

I like smaller chamber ensembles; it's easier to hear what all the instruments are doing.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

They ended up not having old Neil Young anywhere downtown (a friend's hooking me up with On The Beach soon, Yancey) but one store is going out of business so I got Warrant's Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich (for less than two bucks, so what the hell), AC/DC's Powerage (which may be my favorite album of theirs now) and four Rolling Stones albums (2x4, Now!, England's Latest Hitmakers and December's Children). I ended up putting those four and Exile on random on the 5cd changer while cleaning the house. Exile's really growing on me and the other stuff was great too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 13 April 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Gloria Estefan "Mi Tierra," just delivered this morning. It's good--I'd have to say that her singing is probably the weakest link here though.

(I really need to go back to organizing my life around salsa dancing. Note to myself: Call Rafael about private lessons.)

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 14 April 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I've not only heard Surface but seen them perform. ;-) And yes, they are quite great.

Landing are actually friends of mine at this point -- I knew Daron first and now know them all -- and so I am biased, to be sure. But I am biased for very good reason, and heard their music first before getting to know them personally. The record I'm referring to is out on K Records in two months, called Passages Through.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 14 April 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. In my case I just invite Landing out for some good food whenever possible. Must get them to tour here again.

I am NOW currently listening to the debut CD of two ILXors' new band with two compatriots! And it's good, not earth shattering but some fine songs nonetheless. Clarke and Charlie, take a bow. :-) Check out their website here.

Also that newish Robbie Williams album, Escapology, it's OK. There's nothing as good as "Rock DJ" and "Kids". "Handsome Man" reminds me of Eminem.

Tipica 73, Mohammed Khaznadji, Hans Reichel Bonobo Beach, Angel Canales, and Fred Frith Clearing, which I'm liking more--if nothing else, it makes good background music. Too lazy to be more specific w/ the foreign language titles.

This is my first Angel Canales CD, and he's pretty great. He brings a flamenco tinge to his vocals, though he's doing salsa, but without feeling obliged to add flamencoesque guitar, or flamenco clapping, or the like. I like it.

Mariah Carey - "Bringing on the Heartbreak" (had the urge to hear this again. it's good!)

[Surely it's becoming increasingly passe to discuss '80s metal's infiltration of noughties chartpop, but it's fascinating to watch older erstwhile celebrities slouch towards "relevance" using a music that means virtually nothing to the crucial kiddiepop demographic. It makes me wonder -- are artists like Celine Dion (who recently covered AC/DC's "You Shook Me" on VH1's Divas Las Vegas with Anastacia and soft-rocker Meredith Brooks) aiming for the same market as those admen who've figured out how to use cred-rock to trigger impulses in deep-pocketed newly-forty kollektors? Because those consumers aren't the ones who listened to Celine Dion in the '90s, and why would they start now? Have has-beens and their publicists become canny enough to know that if you dangle these kinds of carrot sticks in front of rockscribes and students of the pop sociology, WE WILL EAGERLY ACCEPT THE BAIT, even if it's not good (ESPECIALLY if it's not good)?

I bring all this up because Charmbracelet, Mariah's new one, has a cover of Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartbreak." The fact of the cover is hardly a shock; it's part of its moment; whatever. And it's not as if Carey isn't a bit of a music geek herself -- her records have paid tribute, in varying degrees, to Keith Jarrett, the Emotions, and the Tom Tom Club.

But something interesting's going on here. "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" was a hit for Def Leppard in 1981, but it's certainly not their most famous song. As a piece of nostalgia, it seems to refer more to the era (the point at which the tame extreme of the NWOBHM converged with prom-chintz peddlers like Air Supply) than the band (populist summer-of-'87 glam-metal for Anglophiles and Archies fans). Still and all, it's a schmaltz ballad. And Mariah Carey is a schmaltz balladeer. For me, this is the great turnaround from the days of Vanilla Fudge, whose hamfisted emo-sludgenik takes on the quieter-but-no-less-hamfisted "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Some Velvet Morning" (songs that were, arguably, hard-rock/psychedelic BEFORE those wiseasses covered 'em) were either considered very novel or very mediocre.

Her cover is not "metal" really if you wanna get semantic -- it fits in well with the rest of the conservative elevator-soul on Charmbracelet -- but the original isn't particularly metal either. If you want (and I do), extend the definition of "metal" to include things like "November Rain" (this isn't entirely dissimilar), metal's farthest outpost and the place where the genre finally puts down its devil fist and admits that heavy rock and AM Gold and country and emo and chartpop and gospel are all just the same type of bad, gushy music.

I love that album! "Superbad" was the first song on one of the best mix CDs I ever made.

Currently playing here:

A very George-Harrison-song heavy Beatles mix CD (I'm on "Within You Without You" now, god I love this song! Especially between "As My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Here Comes the Sun"...MUCH better than sandwiched between "Benefit of Mr. Kite" and "When I'm Sixty Four"...blech!)

Coming up next: The Roots' Organix

When I leave work and hit the road with the band to our gig tonight, it'll be: Non-Phixion's The Future Is Now (I love turning on the dudes in my band to hip-hop they haven't heard...they LOVE this disk [I do too.]).

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 26 April 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody I'm way late but "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" (the original) is a beautiful song--was I right to think that you don't think very much of it?

Right now: After the Gold Rush. Trying to decide whether I should go to sleep or watch An Affair to Remember when it's done.

I mean, I came home after work, instead of going out with friends to get to sleep early, but you know how it goes.

Let me echo Spencer's recommendation above, having heard some of that on his urgent and key word. It's pretty good!

Right now nothing. I am more immediately concerned with 1) eating, 2) showering, 3) putting all these damn CDs away...

A Z'ev mp3 from a CD I saw in a discount bin. It's very uncompromising. I would probably enjoy it more if I took some form of animal tranquilizer and hit myself on the head with a led pipe. I think I will pass.

Abdelli New Moon. I am not always in the mood for this, but when I am, it's great. It's unarguably "world music" since it brings together Algerians with Irish and Chilean musicians (if I remember correctly), and it's on Peter Grabriel's label--but it's really good and the blending is tasteful. The Algerian Kabilye (?) sensibility doesn't get lost in the mix.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Before I fell asleep I listened to Ligeti's Violin Concerto and Rush's Moving Pictures.

After sitting through Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits I put on Beethoven's 9th, which was just stunning. I'm now continuing to try to wash out the folk germs by listening to a prog mix tape. It's on Samla Mammas Manna right now, which is OK but not great. There's a U Totem song I like on here.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

FIFA Football?! Jel you need one of those discs that lets you play Japanese games on the GC (Freeloader?) and a copy of Winning Eleven 7, stat.

And an extensive knowledge of Japanese and wads of cash too, obv.

Oh, and this evening I listened to Bon Jovi and a bit of Journey.

Yeah, I've had one since day one, jel. Sporadically picking up and releasing games as I've grown bored. PS2 has my love right now for ISS Pro Ev 2 but I'm salivating at the prospect of Zelda.

My students' horrible music theory assignments. (Not listening out loud, but listening-by-reading.) Everyone was doing pretty well before but this week they've entirely lost the plot.

I was seriously tempted to put on some background music while grading (which is fine for some kinds of homework but not normally for a composition assignment).

Buncha mp3s I transferred from disc to hard drive in prep for CD-making. (There's a weird treble crackle in one of them that's pissing me off cause I really wanted to use it. ... I think it's deliberate.) Mash-ups, covers, and like eleven different versions of "Ring of Fire."

(...oi fk! - "the real life"...)

minding quietly my own little unsubstantial business, or so it seemed - of gettin' to listen to this little shiny rekkid, i.e.
-- Estonian Composers IV: Estonian Music Days 2002, i.e. --
suddenly all hell broke loose down at the front door of our house: a ten-strong bunch of shitheads were evidently trying to get into the building - why? i dunno! - while obviously having no key, but of course - and eventually trying to brake down the door...
et-bloody-ceteracetera-&-so-bloody-back-&-forth...
so instead of helping m'self to an hour of "modern composition" i had to attend to callin' the p'lice and consequently having two hour's worth of extra-musical conversation with the representatives of the law (who turned out to be rather sensible guys, thank heavens)...
and now, un-friggin'-surprisingly, i'm not 'xaklty in the mood for "contemporary sound adventures" any more...
--- that's the wondrous Walpurgis Night, that is. FK.

See, so then it's redundant and that's no damned good.

But I don't have "Lapdance" on a CD and thus could not, until now, listen to it while walking to the pharmacy for 4 a.m. cigarettes and a Red Bull in the midst of a writing kick. See?

Hey your glass is empty

why don't you let me take you
it's no good to go alone
I never would have opened up

after all the bullshit I've heard
it's refreshing not to see
I don't have to pretend
she doesn't expect it from me
Don't tell me I haven't been good to you
don't tell me I have never been there for you
don't tell me why

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 8 May 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Toxicity...my band has just learned "ATWA", which, when we play it, releases mad demon-spirits from withing, leaving you quite at peace once it's done. "YOU DON'T CARE BOUT HOW I FEEL! I DON'T FEEL IT ANYMORE!" The song I REALLY want us to do offa that album is "Needles" though...best. chorus. evah.

I usually don't listen to a single song multiple times in a row, but I think I've just listened to "The Grade" offa Money Mark's Mark's Keyboard Repair for the 11th time in a row. The groove in this song is just TOO MUCH THE FUNKY!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 May 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Until now today, I've been listening to Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango, Ali Farka Toure, Ladysmith Black Mambazo (best first-thing-in-the-morning-when-the-sun-is-shining-bright music POSSIBLE)...lots of stuff from all over Africa (but mostly from Nigeria).

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you sorted out the YYZ solo yet, Sundar? It's easy!
I have always wanted to rename myself Holgar.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, there is something to be said for Nothingface. . .

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(and Loverboy)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree. They tried their best, and I love them for it. The Limelight solo by itself is better than all of Nothingface, though (I think). Loverboy can EAT MY FUC, dood.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I have always wanted to rename myself Holgar.

Who hasn't?

I never really tried to learn the "YYZ" solo. (I haven't really tried learning any rock guitar solos for non-teaching purposes in about a decade actually.) It's neat though - I think it would be fun to play on clarinet. For some reason I think of a clarinet when I hear it sometimes. Hmm, this might get me to pick up the clarinet for the first time in a couple years.

I used to listen to that album a lot while studying for my January exams in Grade 10. I always sort of associate it with winter. I think "Vital Signs" is kind of anticlimactic at the end.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Currently, Madonna - Live to Tell

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"Limelight" was a highlight in their show last summer. It's kind of funny to see lots of people singing along to words like that.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Really (about Vital Signs), Sundar? I think it ties Moving Pictures together with Signals. The YYZ solo is easy so don't bother! I have to say one marginally provocative thing about Moving Pictures - The Camera Eye is good, really good.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, that's not provocative at all.

Do you know Almighty Trigger Happy's Disturbo, Bryan? I think I'm going to put it on now.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope. I am now listening to Genesis' Duke.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a chance you might like this. I think it's actually from the early 90s. Unfortunately it seems to be really hard to get a copy. I haven't liked any of the other stuff I've heard by them as much.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 15 May 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I will try to track something down, Sundar.

duane (lucylurex), Thursday, 15 May 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

since early in the morning it's been, on and off, mostly birdsong solos backed by distant car-motor ensembles.
which's been just wonderful.

lately, tho, a nasty human-voiced chorus is gradually coming forth from somewhere, and it keeps repeating its theme with rap-like insistency:
GO and MAKE those BIZ-NISS CALLS! GO and MAKE those BIZ-NISS CALLS!GO and MAKE those BIZ-NISS CALLS, YER SLEEPY HAPLESS FULE!

(must go and humour the litle voices inside my head now, sadly)

The new Abdelli CD, Among Brothers. It sounds good, but I will probably need a little time to grow into it. I said on another thread that it was more traditional, but it still features a mix of musicians from many countries. I think New Moon has some subtle electronics, though, and this one appears to be all acoustic.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 19 May 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Bjork - Telegram; I love the "Pretty Rocks" song WAY TOO MUCH. I've altered the lyrics a little for my own singing-along, cuz it's very gender specific. Example:

The lyric:

"I adore/back of Max..."

I sing as:

I adore/legs of Meg..."

...which is cool cuz I actually do know a girl named Meg whose legs are very adoration-worthy.

I gave up on DM after Alan Wilder left (actually, I never bought SOFAD, which he was maybe still involved in, but maybe less centrally?) because I always Wilder's arrangements were the best thing about the band. But last night forced me to re-evaluate.

Julio, have you ever seen her live? I saw her Tuesday with Andrea Neumann and talked about it on this thread. It was great. I just got back from seeing Brigitte Poulin play Morton Feldman's For Bunita Marcus at the Music Gallery. It was a very serene 90 minutes contemplating the complexities of life while picking out patterns of light and shade in the stained glass in my doped-up haze while the sparse piano tones rang into each other. I listened to a Derek Bailey/Evan Parker concert from 1980 too today BTW. Also Sonny Sharrock, the Beatles, Funkadelic, De La Soul, and Beck

The last track has derek bailey improvising with moto yoshisawa and akio suzuki and it was just overwhelming, as in I thought my brane would blow up. The way they biuld up interaction and literally let it all hang out makes most post-rock sound so polite and comfortable. Most of the rest of this CD is incredible too.

I'm trying not to buy CD, which is tending to make me listen to things I haven't listened to for a while. Unfortunately, I often find that those things are no more appealing now than they were before.

I listened to some Riad el Sounbatti before I went to bed. His singing is quite nice, especially for someone primarily a composer, and his oud playing his fantastic. This CD has three songs on it, but I only see what look like two song titles. It's a shame his own recordings are so hard to get.

''julio that taylor is pretty great, innit?''

yes, its the best cecil taylor unit disc I have (by quite a distance too). I have abt 20 Cds of his and I'd say this and 'silent tongues' are my top two (though I enjoy lots of his stuff of course). I'll probably listen to the other copy later.

so after the cecil taylor I listened to some more stuff:

masayuki takayanagi/karou abe: gradually projection (another CDR copy for an ILXOR).

then vajra's sichisiki and some of nujiumu's 'era of sad wings' (an ILXOR sent me some haino CDRs and they arrived yesterday).

then I heard some of Xenakis' Persepolis 'remixes': pretty average stuff.

right now just woken up and am listening to 'Persepolis'. this is the deal folks.

a Billy Ward And The Dominoes comp, featuring the most emotional song ever (I say this with no doubt at all, and I'd bet that I've heard more music than almost anyone else here) 'The Bells'.
now a Faces comp.

Sleeza by Kiki and Silver Surfer, it's pretty cool, it's on the city rockers offshoot crosstown or whatever it's called, supposedly their new house label. It's a bit DFA.

Swans- Children of God: a very smart record and I can use the word 'eclectic' without any shame.

Small Faces - s/t
Kinks - Village Green
Doobie Brothers - Greatest Hits, god help me
Love and Rockets - Earth, Sun, Moon, kate's infectious enthusiasm over on ILM has me pulling these guys' records out for the first time in certainly at least a decade. Pretty fun stuff. I love when ILM does that.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 15 June 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops, my bad; the title of the Doobies' cd I'm listening to is in fact The Best Of, not the more pedestrian sounding Greatest Hits.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 15 June 2003 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

these days and times pt. 1 and electic aesthetic pt. 1

also a live set i have on mp3

i guess live at the temple is worth it then? i have it q'd up on slsk but it's gonna take like six hours

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 15 June 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't that spoken word thing at the beginning of These Days and Times amazing? It makes me feel alive.

Temple is really good. Uh, selection-wise that is (I don't know if his skillz could be ever called "really good" but I love his EQ abuse anyway). He actually repeats one or two cuts on it from Eclectic Aesthetic if I recall, but the flow is really good.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 15 June 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I started a thread about Pavlov's Dog on ILM ages ago, Norman. I love that album in particular. I'm a big enough fan to even have their third, which is not good.
