Crush Tapes... How twee. I've actually made a few, but always came to my senses before actually giving them away. Anyhow, classic or dud? Any crush tape stories?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'm making a CD for YOU, phil.

Oh wait, I don't have a crush on you.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yes you do, you tart!

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud, when you give the tape to them and several months later realise how incredibly fucking horribly obsessed and insane they think you are now, and you'd really like to explain to them that you didn't really mean it to seem so slobberingly desperate, but now they go out of their way to avoid you, and you have to face the reality that you completely fucked up any chance you might have had with them, yet despite all this you are still completely in love with them. Ahem.

Poppy (poppy), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i made one for my english teacher in tenth grade, just before summer. end to end shitty indierock.

she totally led me on.

brian badword (badwords), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Poppy's OTM.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 April 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone actually given a crush tape that was well-received?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I got one from the last guy I dated that I liked; but it wasn't all full of lovey-dovey nonsense. Phil, it's sad you've made them but not given them; I'm sure they were cute.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

they all had Black Tambourine "Throw Aggi From the Bridge" on them.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Crush tapes are so lame.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Never works, but classic in the sense that years later you can listen to it and think "god, i totally would of dated me." And then you notice all the mixes others have given you that you never listen to. And you sense there is a lesson to be learned but alas aqua teen hunger force is on.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i totally would not have dated me. but i'm different now.

Aaron A., Friday, 18 April 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't made one in years, but when I did, they always went over pretty well (cos they weren't really mushy, just stuff I liked...and ok, maybe the occasional mushy song, but they were rare. I think I had more fun making them than anyone probably did listening to them.

Dammit, I want a crush tape. Someone make this happen.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I once made a tape for a boy where I covered the whole of Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the USA'. I said, 'This is our future'. Not really.

Dolly, Friday, 18 April 2003 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Luna, I want one too.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

My best attempt was an ambitious C120. The crush lost its power over me halfway through and so I stopped my artful, love-inducing mixing and just slapped on two sides of Double Nickels, which I was obsessed with at the time.

The crush came up to me a couple of days later and gushed about that amazing Side B of the tape. I swallowed my ("what about the Kyu Sakamoto track?") pride and told her about the recent demise of the Minutemen and for a moment I saw her resolve weaken under the impact of the tragedy. My feelings for her redoubled. Then she raced off.

A few months later she stood me up at a Firehose show because her neck hurt.

Paul Eater (eater), Friday, 18 April 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud - I still wince when i remember a tape i gave someone years ago (didn't come to my senses) at least it had some bitter aspects to it so not too twee

H (Heruy), Friday, 18 April 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

A few months later she stood me up at a Firehose show because her neck hurt.
OUCH!

I made a quasi-crush tape for a quasi-crush a few years ago, but I don't know it it worked because I was too shy to really talk to her that much. It was a good tape, though, as it was put together as more of a survey of disco and house music, and not as a proposal of any sort, though I did put "music is the key" by JM Silk on there... "I am a DJ and/music is my plan/to win your heart and make you mine/I'm thinking of you all the time" hahaha but it is a great house track... maybe I should have put "Baby Wants to Ride" on instead ;-)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I made a crush tape that was an album of me playing songs that I wrote for her interspersed with sappy songs that I liked. Me @ 16 = Yanc3mo.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I once made a "you already know I have a crush on you despite circumstances preventing our actually getting together, but here's the crush tape I would make you if I thought courting you would actually get me somewhere" mix. And it was accompanied by a really long letter, spilling my feelings. He loved it, and luckily he wasn't (too) freaked out by it. Didn't result in anything, but whatev.

Can hardly remember what I put on there... it was Guns 'n' Roses, Teena Marie, Nina Hagen, Gang of Four (it just wouldn't be a crush tape without "Damaged Goods"), the 5th Dimension, some dreary Italian pop singer...

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll make you one, Chris

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Eater, do you mean Myu Sakamoto? If so, can I have sloppy seconds on that crush tape?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of my crush tapes just end up in my desk drawers but a few have hit their targets with remarkable effectiveness. One young lady was listening to the tape I made her on the train from Boston and said it moved her to tears. I sometimes feel I am perhaps better at speaking in the language of the mix tape than actually talking to people.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too, luna, me TOO!

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

But somehow I feel like revealing the contents of a crush tape on the internet defeats the purpose. It's like something you whisper in someone's ear.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

You want one too?

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Sophomore year of high school I gave a girl a six or eight tape collection in a green plastic carrying case for her birthday (with a computer printout of song titles and commentary). She turned out to be a Mormon though, and wouldn't talk to me after I refused to learn more about the faith.

But I'm not much for tapes that specifically say I've got a crush on you, never have been (those six or eight were purely good-music tapes). Though the song selection of tapes I gave girls with crushes weren't done without thought to the crush.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I will reveal that the key song to put on a crush tape is "How About You" by Ralph Freed and Burton Lane.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, I think so. I have no idea what music you listen to besides Orbital though.

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd vote for Marshall Crenshaw's "Cynical Girl" myself.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

oh.. well, um.. you know, stuff

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

that's the difference 'tween me and you anthony.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds good to me, luna

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

tho i admit your suggestion is probably more effective.

*sob*

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I got this crush tape from this guy I had only spoken to 2 times. I went to the record store where he worked and he said "I made you this tape." This was like 1997 or 1998 and every single one of those songs became a favorite song at one time or another. Ida "Maybelle" the 7 inch version, OTC "Love Athena", The Clique "Superman", VU "I Found A Reason", Go4 "Damaged Goods", Zombies "You Make Me Feel So Good" Draw the Kitten "Prince George County" and this Softies song and Mendoza Line song that I have never been able to find since a roommate stole this tape and I can't remember the title names. It was the best tape ever because he knew when to cut his losses and kept the tape at 60 minutes instead of the presumptuous 90 or 120 minutes. It was a classic.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

and...

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Damaged Goods" is a classic for making sure a crush tape isn't too sweet AND reaffirming you're capable of simple lust.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ummm nothing happened, I was like 19 and he was close to 30. I thought he should know how to make a move but he was painfully shy. For some reason in college I had a lot of 30ish male friends that I would go record shopping with or who would hang out on my porch and drink beer with me while listening to music. And not a single one of them would ever make a move.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm guessing at least 80% wanted to or where doing it and you didn't notice or would have if they weren't already in a relationship.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

note * if the boy/girl calls after receiving the crush tape or brings up how much they liked it first without provoking then you have succeeded. If you have to bring up if they liked it or not chances are they don't care.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

That probably only counts for FLAMING crush tapes though. Cuz I've gotten raves for mix-tapes from girls I was crushing on without any change in the "friend box" I was trapped in. Shit, one girl still brings the damn tapes up.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you want the crush tape I would have made you in high school or do you want the crush tape I would make you now?

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

carey otm

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

How 'bout half-n-half?

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Done.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

*smiles like a giddy schoolgirl*

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Howsabout the crush tape you'd have made in 6th grade?

Aaron A., Friday, 18 April 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, I believe Kyu Sakamoto did "Sukiyaki" (AKA "Ue wo Mite Arukou"), which was a number one hit many moons ago. If you're hankering for some Miu Sakamoto, I might have an MD copy of her album around here, but I fear it may no longer be in my posession.

JS Williams (js williams), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

In 6th grade I was listening to Culture Club, Wham and Prince. You tell me.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps we should organize some kinda mix trade. Who wants to be the hub?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah yes: tis Myu that I covet;)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

luna: totally grebt, natch.

Aaron A., Friday, 18 April 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd vote for Marshall Crenshaw's "Cynical Girl" myself.

This type of thing would *melt* me.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget about me Luna! I want one too. Same as oops, high school and now! yay. I'll make you one in exchange. CD-r.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

this will give me something to do this weekend while I'm high

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think anyone ever made me a crush tape. I think i'm going to go cry now.

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It was the best tape ever because he knew when to cut his losses and kept the tape at 60 minutes instead of the presumptuous 90 or 120 minutes. It was a classic.

The crush tape I made was 60 minutes too. Just because, um, I couldn't find a C90 around the house and it wasn't worth going out to buy one.

"Damaged Goods" also worked v. effectively when I put it on a tape for someone I'd just started dating. His ex-girlfriend was a horrible manipulative psycho piece of shit and my message to the guy was spelled out in the song: "The change would do you good/I always knew it would."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Only have done this once and it was a "happy birthday" tape rather than a crush tape, but either way I fully convinced her of my raging insanity.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll make you one rosemary, if you like

(No one ever made me one, either)

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

And no one has ever made me one either...

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone made me one. It sucked.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the idea above. ILX lez crush tapes for all!

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody I'll make you a crush tape but it decidedly won't be a CDR.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately this means I may have to break out the Toad the Wet Sprocket cd's.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Fine I'll do a tape. My high school tape or now tape?

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah - these will be crush cds, not tapes - is that ok?

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, crush tapes are all well and good, but surely I'm not the only one who's made a break-up tape for a boyfriend?

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

sure, i can do both. But whatever people want. Luna, email me your biznezz.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody I'll make you a crush tape but it decidedly won't be a CDR.

Aw, thanks. I made yr Free Design CD, btw -- I'll drop it in the mail tonight.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

well hell, I want one

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

So do we want, 1988-1992 errr, 1993 style (I stayed back).

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to put positively filthy songs on these things.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife is going to wonder why I'm getting tapes from chicks. Hehe.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm starting mine now.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

luna send me yr addy and I will send out this week.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

hot.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

So no preference in years? I kind of prefer to make a high school style tape, takes me back to when I did it the first time.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

high school definitely

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

and of course, I would need to put my high school band on here.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

jk

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

If I ever make another one, "Lord Of The Thighs" is definitely gonna be on it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

right after "Cynical Girl" of course.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

im all giddy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

we'll have to get together and make an ILX Best of: crush tape before we're through

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to put a disco porn song on mine.

And the Misfits.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Skulls"?

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"Last Caress"

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

worth a shot. "I want your skulls" IS pretty damned romantic if you ask me

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

mines already depressing. i was a depressing dude in 1992. no wonder all my gf's broke up with me. Ah, Last Caress, such wonderful lyrics.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose I could copy an old one or two I made back in 1994 or so, but damned if I can remember what was on it...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

part of the fun of crush tapes is listening to them years later and thinking "what the fuck?"

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm re-living it all as we speak. Flashbacks of purple hair and red doc marten boots. i was hot.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

You were the Sandman's goofy cousin?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I just broke out Kitchens of Distinction for the first time in about 12 years. Haha, yes.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Song that always reminds me of high school: "On the Dark Side"

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Eddie and The Cruisers. I loved that movie.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Have we discussed how effective crush tapes are, though? I have to admit when my current boyfriend first made me a tape, by the time I reached the second side I was SWOOONIN'.

All the crush tapes I've made, however, are sure to be remembered as laughable.

Mandee, Friday, 18 April 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Give in, Chris. Then kill Interpol. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

My god, im getting teary. Im a big fat sap. Its like I'm really crushing here. I'm going to call you all on the phone and talk for hours about nothing.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

ok but you may have to give me your class ring for that level of dedication

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, my gf from high school still has mine. thats funny.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine is in a field somewhere in Colorado - thrown there by a guy I was semi-seeing who stole it from me in an effort to get me not to leave him.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmm Ride.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll keep an eye out for it, Luna.

Mandee, Friday, 18 April 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to bust out the John Cafferty... I feel like I'm 15

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

my eyes just welled up. I brought out my friggin yearbook and everything, "A Letter to Elise" just made me cry almost. God, I haven't listened to these songs in a long time.

Chris V. (Chris V), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Luna, please tell me you were in high school in the 80's mullet period. ROWR!

Chris V. (Chris V), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I graduated in 1989 - did someone say jersey girl mall hair?

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I graduated 1988, so we share that bond. Imagine me with short hair. Shocking I know.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

so i was a sophmore. this is when i was learning the running man. the young neditee.

Chris V. (Chris V), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a strange desire to get a perm...

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ok it passed

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i have the desire to get a perm too.

Chris V. (Chris V), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never had this desire. But then again I lucked out with wavy hair.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, my crush tapes are going to be like all over the place, I didn't go to high school so I don't have a reference point.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, well, that's easy -- refer to any video from 1982 to 1995 featuring a pained teenager.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the breakfast club encompasses the range of high school charaacters

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No, because it lacks me going "You bastards! Why the fuck do you have this shit theme song, for a goddamn start?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

that was implied

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Luna! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned = Judd Nelson

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought you were my friend.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you hurt him in his heart

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

THAT'S THE HIGHEST COMPLIMENT I'VE EVER GIVEN ANYONE AND YOU SPIT ON IT.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

*weeps bitter tears of self-reproach*

Actually, why did I think that Rob Lowe ranked higher for you? I must have been smoking the crack pipe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Because of that whole story how Otis thought Ramon looked like Rob Lowe, which was total nonsense.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

she's gonna kill us one by one

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But somehow I feel like revealing the contents of a crush tape on the internet defeats the purpose. It's like something you whisper in someone's ear.

OTM. I would post my great crush tape were it not for this. Oh okay, I'll reveal one song. Side B, song 2 - Dar Williams, "Iowa".

Try as I might, C120s are inevitable.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

are crush tapes just mixtapes you make for your crush? or do they have to contain occasional mushy songs which are supposed to say to the person "hey i dig you"?

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i think they can be the former. but if they're the latter, the mushy songs should predominate.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

what if theres only about three or four crushy mushy songs?

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

that's probably enough. too many and the tape will be nigh on unlistenable

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

pretty much every mixtape i've ever made has been for someone i've had a crush on. but i've only made one with (a handful of) strategic crush songs.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Otis thought Ramon looked like Rob Lowe

*That's* right. Oh man how ridiculous.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

that's probably enough. too many and the tape will be nigh on unlistenable

not if yr good at it

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

well yeah i guess it possibly also depends on your def of 'crushy mushy'

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i either learned my lesson in tenth grade or i just figure i don't know anyone who cares about music cuz i haven't made any since. once in awhile i try but i never get further than two or three songs in before i abandon it.

it can't mean i don't care about music, though - why else would i be here, right?

needless to say, i'm a total wallflower on these threads. more so, i mean.

brian badword (badwords), Saturday, 19 April 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

err, idunno why i posted that.

brian badword (badwords), Saturday, 19 April 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

but surely I'm not the only one who's made a break-up tape for a boyfriend?

Ooof! What was on it??

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 19 April 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

''I suppose I could copy an old one or two I made back in 1994 or so, but damned if I can remember what was on it...''

hey ned could you make me a crush tape but just put jandek tracks on it ;-)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 19 April 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Staring at the Julio: A Love Tape

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 April 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I randomly make up a mix CD, coz like I would never make a specific crush tape.

Guns'n'roses - get in the ring
Kelly Osbourne - Shut Up
Journey - Still they ride
Servotron - Pull the Plug
Styrofoam - The Long Wait
The Ataris - In this diary
Him - The Funeral of Hearts
The Happiest Guys in the World - The Cold Wars Over
Velocity Girl - Pop Loser
Poison - Life Loves A Tragedy
Juniper Moon - Enfermedad
Alison Krauss & Union Station - There is a reason
Cradle of Filth- Presents for the Poison Hearted
Bon Jovi - Blood on Blood
Gram Parsons - £1000 wedding
TATU - Malchik Gay
Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles

That's the kind of mix I would make, regardless.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 April 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

and yeah, I know all those groups are quite similar.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I so want a jel mix CD

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

''Staring at the Julio: A Love Tape''

the word 'staring' and with the jandek tracks would prob make me think you were a psycho ned.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that Jel's crush tape has a track called 'Shut Up' on it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

email your address and I'll send it to ya gabbneb.

(just hope my CD burner is working!)

yeah, martin, I was gonna make a sort of anti-crush CD, with all anti-love or hard hearted sentiment songs on it, I still might come up with a tracklisting for it!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 April 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Anti-love CD (based on songs I have access to)

1. Kelly Osbourne - Shut up
2. Alice Cooper - Go To Hell
3. Guns'N'Roses - Estranged
4. Him - Buried Alive By Love
5. Gram Parsons - Love Hurts
6. Ramones - Glad To See You Go
7. The Carpenters - Hurting Each Other
8. Cradle of Filth - Presents From The Poison Hearted
9. Bon Jovi - You Give Love A Bad Name
10. Heart - Alone
11. Neil Young - Don't Cry No Tears
12. Whitesnake - Here I Go Again
13. James Kochalka Superstar - I Just Called To Hang Up
14. Heartworms - Enemies
15. Butterlies of Love - Leaving When I'm Done Drinking

I'm evil.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 April 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

and oh, I don't have Twisted Sisters "Love is for suckers" :(

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 April 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

so is that what a breakup tape would be?

JuliaA (j_bdules), Saturday, 19 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess, or it could be a crush tape in the form of "I don't wanna make a soppy lovey dovey tape, so have this instead".

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm evil-ler

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 19 April 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

so it could be the musical equivalent of picking on yr crush on the playground.

everyone seems to be claiming to be evil lately...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The perfect break-up song is a country number featuring the refrain "Take your tongue out of my mouth, I'm kissing you goodbye".

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

My break-up tape was filled with songs about sour relationships. I might have the track list around somewhere; I'm pretty sure Sugar's "Explode And Make Up" was on it.

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget Guns n' Roses Used to Love Her

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

and Ugly Kid Joe's "I Hate Everything About You"!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess the trick is to pick something that voices disdain AND makes them not want to date you. Putting Ugly Kid Joe on a mixtape should achieve that.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but I wouldn't date anyone who didn't like Ugly Kid Joe! :)

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

but what if neither of them will date you?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 19 April 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm resigned to a life of loneliness.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 April 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

well, I like that one UKJ song...

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 19 April 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I did do a break-up tape. but there were no songs with those kind of 'themes'. though the songs were moody on one side (it ended with fushitsusha and current 93).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 19 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

do y'all want track listings on them, or would you rather it was a surprise?

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 19 April 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

this is turning into one fucked up cd - I think I like it

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 20 April 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't the chorus from Heart's "Alone" go "how can I get you alone"? Is it really a hate song?

Oh and Phil, I think your fears about this thread going unnoticed are groundless.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it does, it's my curve ball.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 20 April 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I am working on copying mine 8 trillion times over right now! They all have a very special hidden track you know!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Now Ally is it true you want more Bobby Brown in your life, because I can make different one's for different people. You'll get my 8th grade style and Luna gets the high school depression style.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I definitely would rather have 8th grade style.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

You asked for it....

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I made such a tape for a girl in Regina once and she called the cops on me. Never put "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" on a mixed tape after that incident. So, dud.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I put great songs on mine.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

your is going to range from The Outfield to Freur to Bobby B to Steady B....oh boy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, that's brilliant.

Mine has songs in four different languages, I realized

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Fantastic. Of course, mine is going to be put together like I was in 8th grade with no order to it whatsoever really. All I know is Im kicking it off with Keith Sweat.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

There is no better way to kick it off.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh its on now...
http://www.pwave.com/images/dvs/large/fransisco_blk.jpg

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My mix CD includes a song where the chorus just yells "P L A Y S T A T I O N" repeatedly. Does yours? No.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but it does include the Cowsills.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

right into "Come Get To This"

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

there will be no tracklisting on mine.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, yours is my total high school cd - I keep listening to it, and I like it.

Ally, yours is done, but I'm not sure - I'm working on it still, I think.

Dammit, I'm a creative genius, but I'm never sure if my creative genius extends to crush tapes.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I finished yours luna (my first crush tape ever!), just gotta find time to mail it.

buttch (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yours is done, too, oops, but suffering from the same maybe-this-isn't-creative-genius-maybe-this-sucks malady as Ally's

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahah... I can't wait to hear it.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

buttch (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

can a crush tape which has both nelly's "pimp juice" and lords of acid's "am I sexy" on it fail to be anything but classic?

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

my tape'll be pretty boring in comparison. it's hard to find cheeky songs from thirty years ago.

buttch (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(also, please note that the track selection is tongue-in-cheek serious, ie what I would pick if I was REALLY lame and REALLY liked someone. Good tunes, nonetheless.)

buttch (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

you have no idea how easy to please I am

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

well, ok maybe you do - either way, just get it here

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, you guys are making individual tapes for everyone? Blimey that's a lot of thought process going into it. I've barely started so I will work on individual stuff but you are all getting the same cover art!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

you have no idea how happy that makes a man (or do you...)

buttch (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My cd for ally is fine. like my ass.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

baby just touch Bobby anywhere....cutie you turn me on....

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

like my ass.

I read that as a command

buttch (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

it wasn't? Ohh...

(and yes, of course I do)

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

grrrrrr

buttch (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

well, a general idea, anyway

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I want a crush tape, but only if it comes with an actual crush.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone would like to arrange this, feel free.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple of mine are the same, but Chris V. is getting the high school one (I know it was supposed to be half then and half now, but I was having too much fun and ran out of room!) And oops' is different altogether again

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

poco is the shit. luna, im having a hard time deciding on what kind to do for you. Ally mentioned bobby brown so I went from there on hers. Hmmm, now for you if you want my high school style I forewarn, its depressing. So i think I am going to do one like I'm crushin now. Still depressing....hahha.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Like I said, I'm easy - it's all good

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

im a twee kind of guy, so be prepared.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll say only that yours includes reo speedwagon, the kinks, sly foxx and the obligatory john cafferty & the beaver brown band.

twee, thy name is luna

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ally's and oops' are just... dirty.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ally can feel free to use my cd for sweaty love making. hehee.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i love reo speedwagon.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry, nabisco, I can only give tape. I think I'm crushed out.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm doing the other Chris' now... this is more fun than I thought it would be

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

unfortunately I don't think the cover art is going to happen. My printer broke. But I could go to Kinko's.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine kind of tells a story. A dirty one.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I were that organized, but I'm just not

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it doesn't really upon further review. actually i was trying to get it to tell a story, but it didn't pan out. But it does have Teddy Pendergrass on it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 21 April 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

automatically classic

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm officially done with my crush cds...

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

mine tells a story too. One that involves playstations, murder, and the French.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I like it

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally brings you... Freedom Rock

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally's has Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam on it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Its quite the cluster fuck of music.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I second nitsuh.

I will gladly pretend to make a tape for any of the people I listed as crushing.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Make sure you pay attention to the lyrical mastery from Teddy P.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Please, don't besmirch me with the Cult Jam.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

your already besmirched. its in the mail.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

EXCELLENT! This is so exciting. I never get mail besides bills and catalogs.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Give into the cd's charms Ally...let yourself go.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Oops is getting one of your tapes, Ally? I really want you two to get married (despite my proposal) because then you will be Ally Oops. You don't look much like a prehistoric caveman unfortunately.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm doing cover art this morning and then sending this afternoon - yay crush tapes!

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

how can I send w/o going to a post office--which is closed by the time I get off work?

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

put them in your work mail, silly

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

that seems naughty. i seem to remember that there's only two piles for mail here--intra-office stuff and inter-office stuff. i'll see what i can do, though.

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

well, I can say this easily because I have free reign over the postage machine here at work - I CAN MAIL ANYTHING, ANYWHERE - FEAR ME!

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Put them in big huge "official" envelopes.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

f-cover art, none of you get any because Im lazy, my camera's battery is dead and I have no printer. So your fantasies of me in a robe and slippers will have to be that...simply a fantasy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

curses

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

My printer is also broken (stupid pos) and so my cover art is lame and unappealing...

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

mine is going to be grebt.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

my cover art is soothing and reminiscient of old men sipping tropical drinks (plus, it only took me 20 seconds to make)

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine will have cats.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sending them anyway.

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of which, do you two (Ally & buttch) want track listings? I'm making one for Chris, but he wants it covered at first to make it super secret. I await your commands.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I need track listings, even just handwritten ones are fine. Otherwise I'll never figure out anything!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, mine like Chris's if it's not too much trouble.

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

done and done

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ok Ally, I sent yours out without a track listing. But I can email you a special one.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

shit, i deleted all the mp3's. oops. you'll have to guess. the first song is Keith Sweat - Twisted (Sexual Healing Remix)

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

All of y'alls have track listings on the inside cover and I forgot to cover them up, so if you don't want to know, don't read it first.

Otherwise (I'm still mad about this &$%@$!@$#^% printer) they're sent.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yours is almost done Luna. Its so twee, you'll hate it. I get all nervous about cd making and hoping people will like them.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm the same way, but I have decided that shitty labels and cover art aside, I am a creative genius and you WILL LOVE THESE

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

or something.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You all will love mine, there's a song in German that's not Kraftwerk.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, Allys went out yesterday without a track listing. Its better that way, when you hear this shit you won't want to know who it is. Luna's, is off this afternoon with a listing.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

sent.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine all went out yesterday - I imagine you should have them in a few days

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

mines not quite as twee as i thought it was going to be.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

D'oh! Forgot to bring it to work w/me. It shall go out tomorrow, m'lady.

buttch (Oops), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I did one once, it had on it

Herbie Mann - Battle Hymn of the Republic
Charlie Parker et al. - I've got Rythmn (live JATP)
Prince Buster ft. Count Ossie - Oh Carolina
Booker T and the MGs - Soul Limbo
Prince Buster - Jusge Dread

(Bugger I can't remember the middle of it)

Lee Perry - Earthquake Rock
Muslimgauze - the girl who sleeps with
Belle and Sebastian - get me away I'm dying

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

A better Prince Buster track would be The Ten Commandment Of Woman ("as given by me, Prince Buster"). That would be a hilarious track to put on a crush tape.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! Lay it all out there, eh? (is 'eh' how you write a Canadian 'a'?)

buttch (Oops), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

luna, you better not even think about listening to mine without being stoned out of your gourd, preferably on a porch watching the sunset. If you're sober, it would be a disservice to me, you, and the entire country of Jamaica.

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Duly noted and you have my solemn promise

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

she'll probably be dead after listening to mine, she'll jump off the porch.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

but her pigtails will function as propellers, returning her safely to mother earth.

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

what an image that is...

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i've always wanted to pull a Tom Cruise move from Top Gun. "You mind if I take a shower."

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

as a youth, i was always perplexed why he did that. Now, I know that it is just the easiest way to get naked in the house of a woman you've just met.

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Why the ruse? If you want to get naked, get naked.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Cuz some of us are a bit shy, remember? Still, I'd only need the ruse the first time. Then it's ON OFF!

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, I'm still working oh phil's CDs.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shy, right.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I would need to have Berlin playing in the background to pull it off correctly. Actually one of my friends he shall be called G, used this move quite often. And it works. We would go to partys when we were 18 and he would just take showers. He'd come out in a towel and a few hours later he was gettin busy. He tried it a few years ago and failed miserably. I'm guessing because his lack of Berlin and aviator glasses.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it never occurred to ME... maybe you have to be Tom Cruise (or male?) to pull this one off.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you DO NOT have to be male to do this. Spread the word, my child.

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say you can come to my house and try it and Im sure you could pull it off, but I'm married. You can try it at OOPs'.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, next time I'm in chicago, can I come over?

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I could always go on a "business" trip. I'm cuckolding now. Bad mang Chris.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

as if you had to ask (i may be living in a cardboard box by then)(or worse yet, my parents' house--YIKES!)

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

right, and we'll sit and drink beer and listen to 80s music together

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

we'll sit? :(

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I mean Chris and I when we was on his business trip. (I don't want his wife kicking my ass!)

You and I - well, we'll honor Jamaica and see where it leads us.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah. Reo. But no Marvin Gaye. He does bad things to good people. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, can we have "You Give Love a Bad Name" too?

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure, I was thinking more along the lines of a re-enactment of Whitesnakes "Here I Go Again" video.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Does that mean I have to slide all over the hood of a jag? (I'm not remembering which video this is, I think)

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, yes it does.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I do that every time that song comes on the radio. I mean, not a Jag, cos no one I know is that kind of filthy rich disgusting, but like on Volvos and Oldsmobiles from 1984.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

As you should, Ally

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

ally, your going to want to slide all over a phat amc pacer once you hear my cd.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you have one?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

no. I have a Nissan Sentra, pretty much the same thing a small piece of of shit.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Niiiice, I can do things with that.

Seriously, my mom used to make me imitate Tawny Kitaen if that song came on while we were driving. Literally WHILE we were driving.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom once tried to make my friend lisa and I lip synch to "The Girl Is Mine" as Paul & Michael for her friends.

My (not so) secret shame.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

its phat, i got an am/fm stereo with a tape deck and three hub caps. Its also covered in bird shit because there is no sense in washing something that gay.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigfield and Roy disagree

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

haha.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Great now I'm thinking about Sigfried & Roy.

Rectify this. I beg you.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Think about MC Crudders & DJ Grizz.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

fo shizzle ma grizzle.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

brilliant!

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Grizz is so overrated. Last time I saw him spin he was so hopped up on tranquilizer that he couldn't even beat-match properly

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

You try doing all that without opposable thumbs

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, if you can't stand the heat...

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

and if I can?

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I was referring to DJ Grizz...I know you can stand the heat.

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I realized that after I posted it.. sometimes my fingers are too fast for my brain

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

that suits me just fine ;)

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, so Luna's CD just arrived today... Haven't listened to it yet, but are we posting track listings here? Though I don't want to spoil it for folks who haven't received one yet.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 24 April 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

They're not all the same, Chris - I was ambitious!

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 April 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'm done listening to Luna's CD... *wipes sweat from brow*

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 25 April 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

! Some details say so much. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 25 April 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone light me a cigarette

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 25 April 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if I can smoke it for you, too.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 25 April 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm making my crush mix now -- who wants a copy? Also, please note that there's nothing specifically wuvvy-duvvy or filthy-wilthy about this track listing.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 25 April 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take a tape, CD, whatever, from anyone who wants to give me one (and JBR specifically, natch), but can't reciprocate for a bit, cause I need to get a new doohickey for my CD-writer's whatchamacall, to replace the one the cat ate.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 25 April 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't decide if that's good or bad...

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

(you got the one that started with Fiona Apple, right?)

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I can have one pretty please Jody? I'll send one back! You can pick from the 80s mix, the kinda cool one or the dirrrtycandy one. Otherwise, I can make a new! entirely different! one. (This offer also extends to anyone else who wants a taste of the CREATIVE GENIUS that is me. Email me your address and your version preference and let the luuuuuuuvin commence).

I really hope Ally posts my tracklisting. Hahhaa.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

CD on the way, I hope it makes it its not very substatially wrapped.

Ed (dali), Friday, 25 April 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

CHRIS'S TRACKLISTING IS AMAZING. When the Jackson Browne came on, my life was fucking complete, yo. Oh my god.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, you got it. Sweet isn't it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It's beyond sweet. It might even be...sassy? Oh my god. I don't have it with me right now to refresh the tracklisting, but I remember being totally amazed last night by the Jackson Browne. It had a nice balance, one filthy track, one rockist happy track, one filthy track, etc.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish i had the track listing my self. So I could make a copy of it, I usually make copies of things for myself. I know there is some Poco, Marvin Gaye, Jackson Browne, Teddy Pendergrass, Rick James, Bobby Brown, Eazy-E, Keith Sweat...

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and some Outfield.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

37p to send a CD to china. I love that the royal mail is so ridiculously under price.

Ed (dali), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

the jets and lisa lisa as well....

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

37p??? Is it going on the slow boat or something?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

No, air mail.

Ed (dali), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Everytime I hear that Jackson Browne song, I think of Damone and Stacy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

...must...have...cd....

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

its probably going to take 6 weeks to get to California from Worcester.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I think y'all should get them today or tomorrow

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i bet Ally's is in my box when I get home.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

*resisting obvious comment.. .must not release inner Dan Perry*

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

thats why i posted it like that luner.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

well the moment's passed now - NEXT time, though...

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Today. It's going out today. I promise.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oops if you really wanted to impress your crushes they should have been sent out in a timely manner. ;)

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to keep them in suspense

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm massaging it to make it better.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

With all sorts of unguents, no doubt.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 25 April 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

So I get home, check the mail, and find no luna cd. :(
Johnny Postman says yours should arrive Monday.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

my postman decided to skip mail delivery on Fridays. We never get any.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo, honey, I ain't sent out yr tape yet. Or anyone's. I ran out of CDrs so I had to get more.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 April 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

curses!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, I hope your enjoying the Sweat.

Chris V. (Chris V), Saturday, 26 April 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I apologize for not including 'Relax' by Frankie Goes to Hollywood on my tape. (it just came on the radio)

buttch (Oops), Sunday, 27 April 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you can be forgiven, but your punishment is two days in the "FRANKIE SAY RELAX" t-shirt.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 27 April 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Why can't that be my punishment for not having sent these out yet?

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It can, and so it is.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 27 April 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm easy.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 27 April 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

still no sign of these. boo hoo. i want cd's!!!!!!!

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 28 April 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope phil is allowed near the GPO in Beijing to get his CD. They cancelled all fun and net cafe's there.

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 April 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope this isn't an awful lot of build-up for something that turns out to be shit...

luna (luna.c), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm excited for these. I'm positive I won't be disappointed. Luna, no sign of mines?

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's only 9 am - won't get mail til nearly 4... waitinggggg

luna (luna.c), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I figured you might have gotten it over the weekend.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope you've replenished your, um, supply, luna.

buttch (Oops), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that probably should be obvious to me, but it isn't...

luna (luna.c), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hint via NWA: 'Don't get high off your own supply'

buttch (Oops), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooooooooooooooooooh.

I'm a little slow.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I will in a matter of moments be ordering the replacement part for my CD-writer, and a bunch of blank CDs. I've got no idea what's going to go on the Crush CDs, except I can't imagine leaving Nick Cave off, but holla if you want one -- bill at discomoose dot com.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 28 April 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sending out my crush CDs this week.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 28 April 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I got them from Chris and oops when I got home - gonna listen to them when I get back from some stupid dinner I have to go to - yay!

luna (luna.c), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I am sending most of mine tomorrow, you will be blessed with sexy kittens soon. I got luna's and Chris's and they are both tres wonderful! Luna, I love that Monifah song, I forgot about its existance, THANK YOU for sending it to me.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi there. JtM, longtime reader, first time poster. I regret that I haven't made any crush tapes since that incident two years ago with the grrl where I put the whispered snippets of us talking on it. I think. I made one for a friend of mine for her birfday, but it was just a bunch of old soul 45's, so the whole thing crackled and hissed.

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

those are the best kind

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I take that back. I made one for another friend of mine who is always giving me cigarettes and convincing me to do the hippy-hippy-shake. On a dare, basically. It was called "I Made You A Tape, That Means You're My Girlfriend" She thought it was pretty funny.

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok someone make me a cd with that title, NOW. (Please?)

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Not funny in the cool "Aaaaaaw!" way tho.

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Well if I got one from someone being genuine, I'd totally think it was funny in the 'awwww' way - otherwise it would be funny in the 'ha ha that's cute' kind of way

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I Made You A Tape, That Means You're My Girlfriend

Best Tape Name Ever.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you SEE?

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, yes...

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Now really, I want one.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

well, that settles it, the next round of mixtapes I send out are named "I Made You A Tape, Jimmy Says Yr My Girlfriend"

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Well now I want that one, too.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, you'll get it. Don't you worry about that.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I want one too. No one ever returns the favor.

Though if they're all titled that, then Ally will have hoes in all area codes.

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy, I'll send you one, email me your address.

(ps I think it's because they like my gangsta talk)

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Luna's cd rawks mad mullet ass! I luv it. G n R, REO, Hooters, this rulz.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope phil is allowed near the GPO in Beijing to get his CD. They cancelled all fun and net cafe's there.

they cancelled BUFFET DINNERS too!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

And yr ghetto walk....

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, listen, whatever it is, they love it and, believe me, they just won't let me be.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't made any yet, because I keep changing my mind about tracks. So, like if anyone wants a mix CD that has no clear logic/aesethic and Linkin Park, then e-mail me.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, I'm listening to yours again right now - it's rocking my world. I got high last night and listened to oops' about 3 times - tres jammin'.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

*thrilled*

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I put together a playlist and the damn fascist CD-writing program told me it was eleven hours longer than you can actually, you know, fit on a CD. So I'm gonna trim some.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I have gotten only Chris and Luna! The rest of you are slackers fools!

I just sent out mine in the mail so you will get them in two years, after they finally make it out of the Manhattan postal system.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Which is better: a crush tape or a bludgeon tape?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, send me your address, I will send you a bludgeon tape.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine -- the two playlists I've done so far, anyway -- ends in suicide!

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

HOORAY! I will shave a sweet spot onto the back of my head in anticipation!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

A nice rock I hope, Luna.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of my favorite songs are on it, Chris = classic

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I misunderstood the credit limit on my credit card, so can't fix my CD writer just yet, until the latest payment is processed; there will be a delay on the CDs, but I might use that as an excuse to make up for my lack of a working printer by painting some cover art for them or something. I've painted with both lipstick and floggers, I suppose either can work for a Crush CD.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Revive to 4/30, as I listen to Ally's.

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

You already got mine!!! Was the mailbox secretly a teleporter?!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't knowwww...

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you like the cover art? It was the bomb, right?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Bomb-diggidy with big tiggitties, baby.

The Avril Synth-Mix is so sweet it's rotting my teeth.

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I go crazy for that one. The end is the best part, the synth almost sounds like it's saying "Yeah! Yeah!" in the background

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

And the digital handclaps...

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I actually found that song on ILM, someone linked it, so giving credit to whomever that was...they are brilliant.

Really, I don't like listening to the original "Sk8r Boi" at all now because of that version.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this the dsico version?

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's fantastique.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

dsicon.

1. a genre of music made by peripalegic goatherders in Northern Romania

buttch (Oops), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's fantastique.

Yeah, I know, I was going to put it on the CD I'm sending you :)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You still can if you want, I don't see why I shouldn't have it on many CDs, I usually do.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally gets the gold star today

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

You still can if you want, I don't see why I shouldn't have it on many CDs, I usually do.

I may do, depending on what would fit in its place. You've heard dsico's other stuff?

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I like their work with Sheryl Crow!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 1 May 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, according to AMG...

O Meri Jaan Main Ne Kaha

performed by Asha Bhosle / R.D. Burman - 2:54

jm (jtm), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

THANK YOU. That's a song from Alex in NYC, I must've listened to it about 4,000 times the night I got it. He described it as coke muppets. IT'S TOTALLY TRUE.

Oh, did you like the HIDDEN TRACK? Some tapes have one hidden track, others will have another, but trust me both are FANTASTIC.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I have that song from the Karate Kid. I didn't get a second bonus traque.

jm (jtm), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of them have the other bonus track. Except since it is hidden, I don't know which ones I did that to! I'm sorry.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I got Ally's today. Yay! Grebt cd. Love the hidden track. I was getting ready to sweep the leg and everything.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, this is fantastic. I kiss you!

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 3 May 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I was getting ready to sweep the leg and everything.

Don't give it away!!!!

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 3 May 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, I got your just now (thanks!) - "Do Ya" is one of my very favorite songs..

This is so cool.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine have STILL not gone out, because I haven't yet found a replacement part for under $50 (incl. postage) and no one local has it. They will, I promise.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray! I was vaguely afraid that it was going to suck.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

No it's fabulous!

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Awesome!

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I just wanted to say that all the CDs I've gotten so far rock but ESPECIALLY ROSEMARY'S because it's got "Gloria" on it (the Disco 2000 "Gloria", not the stupid ass hippie song).

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 15 May 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(except also in another language which is even better!!!!!!!)

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 15 May 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Reviving. Only because after making a bunch of these I realized I'm much more adept at making bittersweet/melancholy crush CDs.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't send any to Luna: she'll just lose 'em

oops (Oops), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

They're all great, mwaaah.

Wanna do it again?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

you know i've only recieved like three mixtapes in my entire life

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

They're all great, mwaaah. Wanna do it again?

OK, I'm in... Who's wants a crush CD?

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupid late-night dyslexia. That's what I get for not reading what I'm writing before posting.

Who wants a crush CD?

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

jess, I'll send you one, it'll probably have a picture of Klaus Nomi on the front of it though.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in again, too.

Don't send any to Luna: she'll just lose 'em

You can bite my ass, I told you I found it.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 26 June 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

okay okay:
don't send any to Luna cuz she'll pretend to lose it and make you send another one. Greedy SOB

oops (Oops), Thursday, 26 June 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

okay okay: don't send any to Luna cuz she'll pretend to lose it and make you send another one. Greedy SOB

Look, you offered - how was I to know you'd use it as a tool in your diabolical plot to publically humiliate me later? < /tears>

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 26 June 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't know me at all, do ya?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 26 June 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in for this round. Have a chair or bed nearby. You'll melt.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 26 June 2003 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure I do.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 26 June 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sending a cd to luna but it's not a crush one. i don't think. it just has some songs on it. that i think she'll like. hmm.

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 26 June 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

well I totally have a crush on you, Sam, so I'll pretend it is...

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 26 June 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 26 June 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 26 June 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a crush on Sam, too. Don't tell my girlfriend.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 26 June 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

so i did some counting and it's actually probably something like 5

but still

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 June 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe we need a new thread for the new mix. This one's pretty huge.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 26 June 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll do you one if you want, Jess, but you'll have everything you like and won't like the rest, right?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 26 June 2003 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

aight, you got me im in again too. Hows about a new thread for them???? Let me know who wants one.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 26 June 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Gosh I sounded enthusiastic! Jess, I actually WILL do you one if you want, I do tapes all the time anyway

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 26 June 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

New thread.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 26 June 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

blimey jess, for serious, I'll make you a CD, you'll hate it but I'll do it and you can use it as a beer coaster.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 16 April 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

I will make CD's featuring Puffy AmiYumi, Skid Row, Quarks, Juniper Moon, Helloween and etc. It'll make no sense, and may sound odd. If you want, then email or something.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 16 April 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

i just made my all-encompassing ilx crush mix. if you don't love it, well that makes one of us.

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 April 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

I'll try to get mine done tomorrow. I need something or someone to crush on, though. Any suggestions?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 April 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

you after any more crushcds, jody?

etc, Sunday, 17 April 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

Indiscriminately exchanged tapes are not crush tapes. They are fine just as they are.

youn, Sunday, 17 April 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

always, etc.

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 April 2005 07:16 (twenty years ago)

I heart Jody.

youn, Sunday, 17 April 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

Indiscriminately exchanged tapes are not crush tapes.

i don't have time to make individual crush cds for all of you! but in a little while i'll have a .rar file of my mix up on yousendit. link forthcoming.

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 April 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

I think she is ignoring me, but I can't make her a crush tape because her taste is far more eclectic than mine. NB: I am not hitting on her.

youn, Sunday, 17 April 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

ok, i hope this works (you'll need something like winRAR to extract the files):
http://s40.yousendit.com/e.aspx?id=3JF9TZZLKBCEN0OQR8I4YYIEGU

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 April 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

me, eclectic? everyone here knows i'm just a corny indie fuxxor.

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 April 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm looking at the tracklisting now ... this will be a difficult act to follow.

My crush tapes are never this direct. There are so many songs with "love" in the title. I'm the type of person who puts Autechre remixes on his crush tapes. I would have never thought to include a song like "Johnny Angel", even though it's more or less the ideal crush tape song.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 April 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

My crush tapes are never this direct.
Mine too. They're just random songs I think the listener would enjoy regardless of whether they have anything to do with love or not. I should try harder.

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, a track list would be helpful:

ME FOR CRUSH: A JBR MIX

1- Lita Ford - Any Way That You Want Me
2- The Who - Any Time You Want Me (A Capella)
3- Jackie Lee - You Make My Head Spin
4- Lee Hazlewood & Ann-Margret - Hey Cowboy
5- Bernadette Peters - I'll Be Your Baby Tonight
6- Claudine Longet - Falling in Love Again
7- Shirley Bassey - I Wanna Know What Love Is
8- Y Pants - Love's a Disease
9- Hefner - Love Will Destroy Us in the End
10- Kitchens of Distinction - 4 Men
11 & 12- Jilted John - True Love / In the Bus Shelter
13- Starcastle - Could This Be Love
14- Cheap Trick - If You Want My Love
15- 2 of Clubs - Heart
16- Shelley Fabares - Johnny Angel
17- Cristina - The Lie of Love
18- Lou Reed - Tell It to Your Heart
19- Pastels - Sometimes I Think About You

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 April 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

i totally made an indie rock mixtape for the then 18-year old student that works at my office two years ago:

side a
lync "friend"
the raymond brake "easter"
jale "not happy"
sonic youth "candle"
matthew sweet "ive been waiting"
the spinanes "sunday"
superchunk "precision auto"
archers of loaf "the lowest part is free!"
sebadoh "skull"
new radiant storm king "phone call"
silkworm "couldnt you wait"
guided by voices "game of pricks"
guv'ner "babys way cruel"

side b
unrest "make out club"
the wedding present "box elder"
yo la tengo "tom courtenay"
smog "ex-con"
pavement "cut yr hair"
slant 6 "what kind of monster are you?"
polvo "tragic carpet ride"
helium "honeycomb"
madder rose "car song"
portastatic "naked pilseners"
tsunami "valentine"
sea saw "cords"
swirlies "wrong tube"

he had only vaguely heard of pavement, so it had to be real introductory. he bought a helium record because of it, and the tape never left his car stereo that summer. id like to say we are in love and like, happily married or something, but thats not the case. he was 18 and worked with me!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 17 April 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

1. Skid Row - Livin' On a Chain Gang
2. Archers of Loaf - Harnesed in Slums
3. Dixie Chicks - Wide Open Spaces
4. Verbena - Silver Queen
5. Frank and Walters - This Is Not A Song

I give up at this point.

aww dixie chicks! that's hot.

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 April 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

You know, the first time I ever *heard* of this thing called a "crush tape" is on ILX. So I'm thinking I must've missed out on some sort of rite of passage. Hm. The only people who've made mixtapes for me before have been friends who were doing me a favor (or, in the case of one of them, thinking they were doing me a favor -- uh, hello, I'm probably one of the last people who would like teenybopper groups, and you expect me to get into the Backstreet Boys?). Anyway. So, yeah. I don't know where I'm going with this post. Maybe I should just restate the "'Crush tape'? Aw, that sounds sweet. Why haven't I even been aware of this thing before, until now?" thing.

The Spirit of Sam Endicott (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 17 April 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

JBR, the fact that you begin your crush tape with Lita Ford ... words can't describe.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 17 April 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

The Shirley Bassey version of "I Want To Know What Love Is" (I adore the original) is possibly the greatest thing ever.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 April 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

"possibly"

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 April 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Add some CRUSH to your day:

Tracklist (also included in the .zip file contents): (@128 kbps)

01 - Mogwai - Take Me Somewhere Nice.mp3
02 - Cowboy Junkies - Misguided Angel.mp3
03 - The Cure - Just Like Heaven.mp3
04 - Mo Tucker - Be My Baby.mp3
05 - The Ronettes - I Wonder.mp3
06 - Yo La Tengo - Center of Gravity.mp3
07 - Matt Elliot - Forty Days.mp3
08 - Donnacha Costello - Always a Part.mp3
09 - Russ Gabriel - Peace For Thought.mp3
10 - Billie Holiday - What Is This Thing Called Love.mp3
11 - The Ramones - I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.mp3
12 - The O'Jays - Forever Mine.mp3
13 - Hollowphonic - Slow Drift .mp3
14 - Tindersticks (with Isabella Rossellini) - A Marriage Made In Heaven.mp3

This mix gets all cheesed out toward the end. I'm not sure that I'd have the guts to put "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" on an actual crush mix. It would depend on the person, I guess.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

running time = 63:12

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure that I'd have the guts to put "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" on an actual crush mix.

i once toyed with the idea for a "real" crush mix, but in all honesty, there are so many BETTER ramones songs, and ones that don't go on forever. plus i know someone else that used it on his mix.

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

downloading yr mix now.

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

I used to do this, but not lovey songs. I don't know why but it seemed like, "Hey, we're just starting to date, here's a bunch of music I like" as IF that makes any fucking sense! It's an emotionally retarded thing to do, I think.

Now, no, would never do it and wouldn't exactly be thrilled if someone gave me one. It feels very much like an obligation. Listen to this and be prepared for a pop quiz next time I see you.

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

I would be really thrilled to receive a crush tape.

shookout (shookout), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

wow, this is one sad crush mix. if i were the crushee, i wouldn't know whether to marry you or slit my wrists. (this is a good thing. to me anyway. but i'm a saddo goth freak.)

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 17 April 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

After listening to your mix, I decided that I wouldn't be afraid of getting a little sappy. Otherwise, my choices weren't premeditated -- I picked the Mogwai track for the opener, and improvised as I went along, listening to and compiling the mix on winamp as I went.

So I wasn't intending to make a sad mix, but it turned out that way. I was conscious of this as it was being made, which is why I threw in stuff like the Mo Tucker track. Although I must admit that the down moments are my favourite parts of the mix.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 April 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

i will make a crushtape for anyone who has the symapthy to pretend they will make one for me.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Sunday, 17 April 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

We've made two for you already!

running time = 63:12
That's a mistake, the actual running time of my mix is 70:23.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 April 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

more crush mixes please!

Volker Schlöndorff (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 18 April 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

someone make me a shoegaze/dreampop crush mix so i can wander around in a happy escapist daze.

brody the country girl dalle (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 18 April 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

I wish my CD burner was working coz I've got the best shoegazer dreampop set on my Powerbook but no way to get it off. :-(

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Monday, 18 April 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

I was working on a spring mix that sort of degenerated into a crush tape a week or so ago, so it's a bit schizophrenic. I'll upload it later.

1) The Brunettes - Holding Hands, Feeding Ducks
2) The Russian Futurists - These Seven Notes
3) Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'aime Moi Non Plus
4) Durutti Column - Sketch for Summer
5) Saint Etienne - Avenue
6) Cocteau Twins - Lorelei
7) Kitchens of Distinction - On Tooting Broadway
8) A.R. Kane - Up

I can't remember the second side of the top of my head. That's about 45 minutes anyway, which is enough.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Monday, 18 April 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

KoD always sounds sooo good on these sorts of mixes.

brody the country girl dalle (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 18 April 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

I will make crush tapes (well, cds) for any of y'all, but I will not post a tracklisting. You have to wait til you get it to tell me you love/hate it.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

3) Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'aime Moi Non Plus

Damn, that reminds me that I was going to put "69 Annees Erotiques" on my mix but forgot to do it. It would have fit in well after the Russ Gabriel track.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

I wish my CD burner was working coz I've got the best shoegazer dreampop set on my Powerbook but no way to get it off. :-(

you can always gmail it, or yousendit it (sigh, there's just no way to say that gracefully).

brody the country girl dalle (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

i am still getting over the last crush tape i got from you luna! its so relentlessly filthy raunchy that when i play it on my walkman on the train i'm constantly blushing.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

stephen morris, I just e-mailed you about crush tapes. FYI.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
I think every three or four years, the contents of my Platonic Crush CD change completely.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

I just realized Platonic can be read wrong there. I mean in the sense of ideal, obviously. That would be weird otherwise.
