New Orleans FAP? circa may 22?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Do it circa May 1-5, I'll be there to play at Jazzfest.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I will most likely be entertaining future in-laws (or whatever I should call them).

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

don't do it either weekend, I can't leave NYC. Any other weekend between now or then would work, tho (thank you, JetBlue!).

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

jewelly to thread.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

sheesh. weird to see this on ILX. i work nearly every weekend though.

badgerminor (badgerminor), Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Party at my place! No, wait, I live in a broom closet ... Party in gareth's hotel room!

jewelly (jewelly), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I really wanna go to nola, please give me a good excuse!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It will be a luxury suite, yes, gareth? You know what, just go ahead and rent a whole floor for us. Thanx! :)

jewelly (jewelly), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You Nu Awlins folks give some suggestions for where we should meet. (and speak up if you're going to make it.)

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

May 22 is as good as any other night for me. There are lots of fun places to drink in NOLA (perk)--just give a general neighborhood and I'm sure the NO ILX-types can work something out. Downtown I like the Chart Room and the Funky Butt (despite its recent upscaling) and the plethora of daiquiri shops. Uptown I like Cooter Brown's and Kingpin and Philip's and a bunch of places. Up Gentilly and NO-East way I don't know so much but maybe Tep does.

As always, the offer of FREE IMAX MOVIES* stands for all. I am dying to abuse my projectionist power.

*I am well aware this is roughly the equivalent of like FREE CRAPPY EDUTAINMENT FOR EVERYONE but I am often lonely at work as my girlfriend has already seen all the movies we are showing like 300 times.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

hey that sounds cool to me. especially if we drink before hand. . .

As far as bars go, I like seedy places. And strip bars! we gotta do some strip bars.

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Trust me, there's nothing to do in the East after dark (I lived there for a few years). Nearest thing in Gentilly is one of the bars on Elysian near UNO, but the only real benefit they'd have is ease-of-finding for out-of-towners (take I-10 from either coast; get off at Elysian Fields exit; go straight for a few miles).

I think free IMAX trumps that, personally.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think free IMAX trumps that, personally.

Anyone that wants to get hideously drunk and come see IMAX movies definitely should as long as they remember the ancient buy-the-projectionist-a-drink tradition afterwards. Bugs! 3D features a 55-foot tall praying mantis graphically eating the hell out of a fly.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 April 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if anyone wants to hook up at the Funky Butt or at Donna's between May 1st and 5th, let me know.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 April 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll come drink with you. What are you doing at Jazzfest?

adam (adam), Friday, 18 April 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, it would be the 24th or 25th, the sat or the sun...

gareth (gareth), Friday, 18 April 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

damn, I wish I could get there from NYC the weekend gareth's there, but I think my parents (who ironically enough live 2 hours from NO) will be here!

hstencil, Friday, 18 April 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Mama Digdown's Brass Band (inc. me) is playing at Tower Records on Friday the 2nd. and at Donna's on the 3rd, and the rest of the time I'm just hanging out and seeing brass bands.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to see your brass band.

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You'll be perfectly placed, geographically, to partake of our brand-new Krispy Kreme! (A couple blocks down from Tower.)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you going to be in NO, Samantha?

Krispy Kreme is great, of course. However, I can have KK in Wisconsin, but not beignets, so I have to stock up!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

This is true. You'll also be near Cafe du Monde, thankfully :) (And unlike KK, it's 24 hours!) See, Krispy Kreme is still a novelty for me, cause until the one in the Quarter opened, the nearest one I knew of was 30 minutes away. Now it's like ... the sign on the 55 bus may as well just say "THIS WAY TO DONUTS, TEP!"

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm salivating for Cafe du Monde and Gene's po boys already...

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Since that KK opened there have been mad doughnuts just lying around my workplace (~3 blocks away)--it's very bad. Back in the day we used to get big bags of like cold beignets from Cafe Du Monde on Sunday mornings at work which was worse than the KK 'cause a cold beignet tastes so good but sits like several rocks in the stomach. Now I stick with Pop-Tarts.

adam (adam), Sunday, 20 April 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Cold beignets are one of the guiltiest pleasures offered by this city, I think, and that's saying a lot. I was here for like a month before realizing how much better they were hot -- I'd been picking them up in the Quarter and bringing them home (UNO's dorms, at the time) through June humidity, so they were ... well, they were greasy lumps of dough covered in sugar, in that good/bad/New Orleans way.

Cold beignet + room-temperature formerly-frozen daiquiri or hurricane = welcome to New Orleans, it has left a permanent mark on you.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 20 April 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(I love this city the way you love a drunk uncle or coffee-stained Tom Robbins novel you bought in high school and scribbled Trent Reznor lyrics inside the back cover of. It's a guilty, guilty, guilty love.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 20 April 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha. I'd love to live in New Orleans sometime despite the completely excessive eating and drinking habits I would surely develop there. Do you guys go and check out the brass bands? Rebirth, New Birth, Hot 8, Treme, Soul Rebels? You're cheating yourselves if you don't. God I miss New Orleans, especially when I've been out drinking with the boys in the band trading NOLA stories (like tonight obv.).

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 20 April 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Not often enough. One of my favorite things to do, though -- and I don't do this as often as I should, cause after six years I'm just at the cusp of the novelty wearing off -- is wander around the Quarter some night when nearly every bar or club has a live band going, and you can just walk down the street slowly, and for a minute you're listening to one band, then you're listening to this other one, and in between you're in this weird overlap zone where you're kind of hearing the loudest bits of each.

I mean, you can do that in other cities, I'm sure -- I just haven't lived in em.

(I'm likely moving in August, can you tell I've been thinking about the things I'll miss?)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 20 April 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Tep, you live here too? Thought I was the only one ... Where y'at?

jewelly (jewelly), Sunday, 20 April 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

We got a couple of us around on ILX :) I'm in Gentilly, up by Dillard (or a couple blocks off Elysian Fields, if that makes better sense to you). Cemeteries on all sides of me.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 20 April 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Go see the brass bands!!! I'm convinced that it's the best music in the world that no one fucking knows about.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 20 April 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be driving down to NO to coincide with Gareth's visit. We have been trying to make this *the* Southern ILX FAP. we are the few and the proud and we must all work to make this happen. (anyone who wants to continue on with Gareth and I as we FAP through various TX cities before he is released to the West coast contingent, please speak up,)

I would prefer crescent city beginets over KK. I can get KK here anytime. It ain't the same.

That Girl (thatgirl), Sunday, 20 April 2003 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I know of whence you speak, Tep. Well, I'm Uptown, surrounded by snooty Uptowners, whom I oft imagine putting in your cemeteries.

jewelly (jewelly), Sunday, 20 April 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I also am Uptown. 17th Ward.

The FAP-NO will surely put all others to shame as this town affords much more variety in drunken tomfoolery than most.

adam (adam), Monday, 21 April 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

goddamn I wish I could go to this.

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

You can drink on the go, for one thing! (Which I point out in case there are out-of-towners who don't realize it: don't worry about open container laws, you just have to have it in a non-glass container. We have drive-through daiquiris! What a country!)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 21 April 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

A proper NOLAFAP should really take place at the height of hurricane season, to pit drunken ilxers against the might of Hurricane Ainsley, or whatever awe-deflecting names are left.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 21 April 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ok. i'm not working this weekend after all. what happens where and when?

badgerminor (badgerminor), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

nine months pass...
any plans for one this year? i don't have any brilliant ideas.

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

you should do one!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a short and inconclusive discussion of one here.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Revive! I'm going to be in New Orleans again from the 23rd - 26th. Not as many gigs this time so I'll have more time to catch shows and hang out, probably. Shall we give it a shot? Adam?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

New Birth is doing a second line in the Sixth Ward on Sunday we could go to!! It could be the first mobile FAP.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish this Adam could come! I love New Orleans.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i would be soooo fucking down for this. April? damn may i could do. :(

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(up)

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 17 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Bam bitches! I'm there! Want me to see what kind of exciting brass band shows are going down?

adam (adam), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell yeah. The only things I know for sure: my band is playing at Donna's after Treme on Friday, probably kinda late, and then Rebirth is doing a late night Tip's show. Then on Sunday afternoon I have to decide between seeing Hot 8's stage show at the Jazz Fest grounds (because they NEVER do this sort of thing) and the New Birth second line.

(I'll e-mail you sometime after work)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

My real email address is aparker5@tulane.edu

adam (adam), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Aiight fools it's on this weekend some time. Down south ILXors unite etc--or will it just be me and Jordan dodging trombone spit and having fun?

adam (adam), Monday, 19 April 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Bump one more time before I leave.

(Adam, I'll e-mail you tonight with my tentative plan)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Word. Whatever shall I wear! And hey--Rebirth are playing on Saturday night--what brass bands do you prefer? A bunch of them should be doing stuff this weekend.

adam (adam), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I'm thinking:

Friday - I've got my late gig at Donna's, then Rebirth even later at Tip's

Saturday - going to the festival grounds during the day, and then some of us are going to see Hot 8 and drink some Thug's Passions at Beanie Bros. Where are Rebirth playing that night?

Sunday afternoon - New Birth is doing a second line in the sixth ward, should be a great time. Not sure what's going on at night.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Rebirth are playing at Rosy's, which is Uptown. It's a CD release party for Jon Cleary who kind of sucks (his version of "Just Kissed My Baby" is profane in a very bad way). How on earth do you find out about all this stuff outside of New Orleans? Is there some kind of underground brass band network?

I am blissfully free all weekend so whenever you want to bring the FAPy noise is all good.

adam (adam), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweet, I will give you a call or vice versa.

I met Jon Clearly at Joe's Kozy Korner once. He was surprisingly, um, British.

And yeah, we're kinda down with the scene, you know. Among other things, our trumpet player used to be in Hot 8, and two of the Hot 8 guys are in Rebirth now, so it's just a matter of a couple of phone calls.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, is it hot or is it fucking hot down there right now? I not much of a shorts guy, unfortunately.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

It is beautiful right now, 83 degrees. It should stay about this temp according to nola.com but get kinda cloudy over the weekend. I don't do shorts either--I just overheat. Sacrifice for fashion etc.

adam (adam), Thursday, 22 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i could probably make something on sunday. otherwise, this is the weekend im finally hooking up with my long-time crush, so i've got to keep the schedule cleared.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

My g/f is off Sunday evening so that works on my end too.

adam (adam), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Same here...second line from noonish-4:00, then I'm open.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan: what area of town are you staying in/where is convenient for you to hang out?

FD: ditto

I live Uptown but have no real objection to heading downtown, etc for drinking and revelry (or even just drinking and spitefulness). I am however partial to places with cheap beer/cheap cigarettes/cheap pool.

adam (adam), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually live in bridge city, but it's a 10-15 minute drive into town. whatever's ok with me.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I think we're staying in a hotel out in Metairie, but will mostly be downtown. Or wherever the clubs and hot shows are, really. Cheap beer is a must.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

If we're talking downtown and cheap beer the Chart Room at Bienville and Chartres is great--$1.50 High Life and one side is pretty much open onto Chartres St which is really pleasant. It's also superclose to other less dive-y places for the more refined among us. Also the hipster presence at the Chart Room is zero which I adore. Though I solicit suggestions from the both of you (and NOLA lurkers--surely you are out there somewhere).

If we're talking avoiding Jazzfest crowds and being able to park Cooter Brown's is nice and easily accessible from Metairie and Bridge City. Oysters are also cheap there if one dares the late-April oyster bar. Also I am always down for new and exciting places.

adam (adam), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the chart room and cooter browns sound equally fine to me.
has there been any kind of consensus? just give me a time and a place and i'll be there.

felonious punk, Sunday, 25 April 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

YO FD! My reply to yr email bounced! I'm figuring stuff out right now! Stay tuned for details etc.

adam (adam), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Transportation and weather difficulties abound.

adam (adam), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

What about The Saint uptown?

gery f (beckricci), Monday, 26 April 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
I'm going to be in New Orleans this weekend, on the 4th and 5th, anyone want to meet up? Tep?

I don't see any cool brass band shows in the clubs on the 4th, so we're probably going to see if Rebirth or Hot 8 are playing any parties and roll with that. Saturday, my band (Mama Digdown's Brass Band) is playing at Donna's on Rampart St at 10:30. I don't know what kind of trouble I'll be getting into the rest of the time.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Saturday daytime parades are a lot of fun, if you can drink during the day before your show.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

At the moment, it doesn't look like I'll be near New Orleans this weekend -- most of this trip, I'm actually spending with friends in Lafayette, and sojourns to New Orleans have been during office hours so they can go to meetings. I'll email you if that changes, though, Jordan -- Saturday's the one I'm least sure of, in terms of where I'll be and with whom (Friday night I'm catering, so that's out).

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

if you can drink during the day before your show.

HA. There will be drinking before, during, and after the show (it will also be my birthday, but that's just a bonus).

I saw the Zulu parade a couple of years ago. It was cool, but I get pretty antsy standing around in one spot, and when there is a good band I hate only being able to hear them for a minute. Awesome floats though.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

Tep, GO TO ONE NEW ORLEANS

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

(or do what you gotta do, you know, whatever)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

If I ever get to the states (like hello, Coachella) I so want to see N'Orleens.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

It's very nice here. Except for right now, it's raining.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Please insure that it will not be raining on Friday or Saturday, Adam. Especially since the last time we were down, it was a MONSOON.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

were you there also there when that ship crashed into the shopping mall?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

No! But I'm pretty sure we saw someone get killed in a car accident.

(we called 911, although I'm pretty sure they were already on the way since it involved a car hitting another car that was on the shoulder as a result of a recent accident with a third car)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Jazzfest time last year fucking sucked.

I used to work at the Aquarium, which is next door to the boat-rammed mall. I was the receptionist and my desk was in the security office where they had the "WHOOP WHOOP THERE'S AN OUT OF CONTROL BOAT ON THE RIVER" alarm that all the businesses along that chunk of the Mississippi have. I always prayed for a boat crash so I could go home.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

PUSH BUTTON IN CASE OF BOAT

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Jordan, the Times-Picayune called your band the "best brass band in Madison, Wis." Congrats!

adam (adam), Friday, 4 February 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

AW SWEET. At least there actually IS more than one brass band in Madison, WI.

Actually it was a really good show, we ended up borrowing a couple of trombone players from the Lil' Stooges. Other than that it was a relatively sedate weekend. I ate more meals than even I thought possible.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

About 10pm on Saturday night we were drinking at Le Bon Temps on Magazine St and I was like WHO WANTS TO GO TO THE QUARTER AND SEE A BRASS BAND FROM WISCONSIN. The motion was soundly rejected. I'm glad it went well--someday I will see y'all play.

adam (adam), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Awww. Who was playing at Le Bon Temps? Wasn't it Big Sam's Funky Nation or something?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Anders Osborne and Johnny Vidacovich, though we left before it really got started.

adam (adam), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

There didn't seem to be many hot shows over the weekend. Caught a really casual evening second-line over by the Maple Leaf, the last song of Rebirth's one set at the Howling Wolf, New Birth doing an old white folks' second-line that took the ferry over to Algiers the next day, and the Soul Rebels playing trads (!) in the French Market on Sunday.

I guess there must be a lot of shows tonight? It's been a couple of years since I stayed until Fat Tuesday.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Tonight is when all the heavy hitters play: Galactic, Papa Grows Funk (worst band name/band ever), Cowboy Mouth, George Porter, the Nevilles, Quintron, etc. The weekend before tends to be better (though Anders Osborne kind of sucks).

adam (adam), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

New Orleans has made me hate New Orleans funk. Even the Dirty Dozen and the Meters are wanky jam bands now.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad someone else sees it. Everyone here still worships at the altars of Porter and Bo. Eddie Bo, by the way, has opened a restaurant/nightclub in Mid-City called "Check Yo Bucket" or something. It's good to see a respected-but-not-famous musician not end up a junkie even if it's (the cheesily-named club) kind of lame. cf K-Doe.

adam (adam), Monday, 7 February 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Hey, we had an impromptu FAP at the Phoenix show last night. New Orleans ILx massive represent.

adam (adam), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Aww. I'll be back April 22-23.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Are you playing Donna's again? Or just Jazzfest?

adam (adam), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Playing at Donna's on the 22nd. I think it's an earlier show, before Treme instead of after this time.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Awesome. I'd love to go but I am a wimp and can't stay out late. So earlier show is better. Staying out til 2 last night is killing me today (though that may be the gallons of High Life).

adam (adam), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

though that may be the gallons of High Life

Ah yes, that's usually the problem!

I find it very comforting that such a thoroughly Wisconsin drink is so common in N.O.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 24 March 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

The WI-NO connection is kind of creepy--brass bands, High Life... uh...

adam (adam), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Drunk driving?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I think that has sort of a universal appeal.

adam (adam), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Hey, anybody going to the mountain goats show on saturday should stop by the chart room at bienville and chartres beforehand. we're having some kind of a joint ilx/lptj (lastplanetojakarta) fap. cheap(ish) beer and general dorkery to be expected.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

FD is correct here. A debauched time will be had by all.

adam (adam), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Well, by me at least.

adam (adam), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Two weeks until Jazz Fest!

Soul Rebels are playing a 2 a.m. show on the 22nd, so I'm going to that after our show. :>

Saturday, I haven't heard of anything going on yet.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Offbeat Magazine music listings. There's a lot going on that night (the 23rd) though a lot of it is Jazzfest (ie "funk" ie jam band) stuff. I'm sure you have better info re: brass bands than I do.

adam (adam), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

uh, wrong month

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Uh, you're right.

adam (adam), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

also, Gogol Bordello is playing at twiropa on the 23rd. EVERYONE WHO IS PHYSICALLY ABLE TO SHOULD GO TO THIS SHOW!! I will make fun of you for a long time if you don't, adam. and you can't make fun of me for skipping dizzee b/c the OTC tickets fell through, so i'll be getting my grime on anyway.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Offbeat. Someone competent can surely work this and get the magic listings from it.

adam (adam), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

I'll hit up that show probably.

The House of Blues website lists the Dizzee show as "A History of Grime." Failed Hawking ref or promised historical revue?

adam (adam), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, if there aren't any brass band shows on the books we'll probably just roll with Hot 8 to whatever parties they're playing, if you want to come.

Oh shit, it looks like Leroy Jones is playing at Donna's for Charlie's 70th birthday party on that night, we'll definitely be down there for awhile.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

http://img61.echo.cx/img61/905/nofap3mm.jpg

Artist's rendering of our sparsely attended FAP. F-Drunk is on the left, me on the right.

adam (adam), Monday, 11 April 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Excellent.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 11 April 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

that's pretty much perfect.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 11 April 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Well, this is the weekend! Friday night I'll be at Donna's. I'm not sure what time we're playing...I had heard we were playing the early show before Treme Brass Band, but Donna's website lists us after them at 11:30, and then there's the late late Soul Rebels show at Le Bon Temps.

Saturday, I have no idea what's going on. I'll probably go to the festival grounds during the day to catch this and that, but it doesn't look there's much going on at night. Adam, I could give you a call if we settle in at a bar or tag along with Hot 8?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like a good idea. I'll email you the contact info. F-Drunk and I were talking about hitting your show up on Friday too.

I live mere blocks from Le Bon Temps so I'll definitely make it there for the late late Soul Rebels show at least. How late late are we talking?

adam (adam), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Um, 2 a.m. late. :>

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Last time I was at Le Bons Temps I walked down to a bar that I ended up having a good time at...Fat Belly? Buddha something? I don't know, good burgers though.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Buddha Belly is good stuff, though doing one's laundry there is a bad idea. I got my shit all mixed up with some weirdo's leopard-print drawers.

2AM ain't late at all. I was afraid you were gonna say like 4:30 or something. I'm down for that.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Ok, awesome.

Wait, you can do your LAUNDRY at that bar?! Ah, New Orleans!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

The combination of liquor and laundry is much better in theory than practice.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I got my shit all mixed up with some weirdo's leopard-print drawers.

This is the only natural result of drunken laundry, at any rate.

Btw, it's confirmed, we're doing the 11:30 show at Donna's.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

It was great meeting up with you guys. Clearly the best way to FAP is to show up ALREADY DRUNK.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Yes indeed. Kate's got very amusing pictures on her cellphone which will be posted here as soon as she emails them to me. I look about 15 PBRs to the wind but you and Kyle are quite dashing.

adam (adam), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Kyle was a dashing fellow!

I wish I would have taken a picture of the ping-pong room, or the Bush-Cheney sign.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Btw Adam, was the Girl Who Was Not Kate your girlfriend?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Kate = girlfriend. The other girl was Becky, who posts on ILx very occasionally as "temeraire." The extremely drunk girl was Jess.

adam (adam), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Gotcha. They were all very nice. And Jess was very drunk INDEED, I don't remember the word whose declension was being debated though

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Rapacity vs. rapaciousness. Rapacity was later settled on whilst sober(er).

adam (adam), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Kyle (left) and myself pondering Jordan's whereabouts.

adam (adam), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

http://img246.echo.cx/my.php?image=picture124qc.jpg

Hmm.

adam (adam), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Here's a damn link.

adam (adam), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

The "Here's Jordan!" picture. I look like an asshole here, while Kyle has apparently spotted Godzilla.

adam (adam), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Haha, those are great. We all look ridiculous.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

And you guys make me look even shorter than usual.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

It's all the fried seafood.

adam (adam), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Awwww shucks you guys. I wasn't any more dashing than you two were smooth and delicious.
I wish I could've joined in the drunkenness a little more. Hopefully, next FAP around I won't have to worry about waking up early to work on a business plan.
And as I tried to make clear to you guys on friday night, both rapacity and rapaciousness are words. though "rapacity" sounds way cooler.
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=rapacity
I plan to get myself a polaroid camera some time in the next couple days, upon the ownership of which I'm planning to take a picture of the ping pong room. If I remember to I'll get the bush Cheney sign and scan and post them both.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

also, i think my steven tyler look in the second picture has something to do with me being midway through making some sort of sexual gesture towards jordan.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

eight months pass...
I'm going down to New Orleans at Mardi Gras (last weekend of Feb.). Adam, did you end up moving back?

Finding somewhere to stay is not going well, all of the hotels are closed, full, or expensive. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

drive in from baton rouge?

2 columbus circle in 1964 (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

From Gulf Port, MS, I think.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

I AM IN NEW ORLEANS. IT IS GREAT. GREAT GREAT GREAT. Except that the 24-hr Circle K closes at 5PM and my favorite newsstand is no more. Among other stuff. What about hotels in Jefferson Parish or even St John the Baptist Parish? They didn't really get hit at all and it's far enough away that tourist traffic may be ok. Gulfport is far.

If you and yours isn't that many people and you all like sleeping bags and pit bulls I've got a couch/floor.

I finally got a fridge today. Yay home cooking!

adam (adam), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

Also yay cold beer.

adam (adam), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

HI ADAM.

Yeah, the band is coming down (and playing at Donna's) but I think my fiancee and I are fending for ourselves as far as a place to crash. If we can't find anything other than your place we will cook you food and buy you beer.

Do you have a cell phone? I tried the number I had for you but got the 504 disconnection song.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

JORDAN HELLO. The g/f and the dog and myself would be more than happy to put you up if it comes to that. Check your email for my cell #.

Mardi Gras is compressed and insane this year. I'm excited.

adam (adam), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

Hopefully spirits are high.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:26 (nineteen years ago)

NED COME TO MARDI GRAS

adam (adam), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:26 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I just bought my tickets. Flying into New Orleans on Thursday afternoon.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:55 (nineteen years ago)

Do you still live by Le Bons Temps?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

I live ~10 blocks away so yes. And they are open and have been since, like, the day after the storm. God bless em.

adam (adam), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:58 (nineteen years ago)

Awesome. I'll start looking for hotels.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

NO FUCKING FAIR!!!
I'm stuck working on a shitty Kevin Costner film up in Shreveport right now and will most likely have to miss mardi gras this year.
If i've got the 2 weekend days off before the big day i'm definitely driving down and partying my ass off, so be ready for some drunk FAPing. I'll probably be up here for another two months otherwise.

Glad to hear you're back adam. we will have to have some drunken mini-FAPs when i eventually get back. goddamn, i havent seen live music since the storm (not counting that second line on new years) and it's killing my brane.

fetchboy in Shreveport (...gross), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

Kevin Costner? ... Shreveport? Kyle, wtf?

Do you have my cell #? Call me.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

three months pass...
I'm looking for eating and drinking ideas during Jazzfest 1st weekend (April 28th to 30th) evenings (when Jordan's band is not playing at Donna's on Saturday night the 29th of course!). It's my first time back in New Orleans in 10 years.

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Saturday, 22 April 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

So Adam, are you the only New Orleans ILXer there now post-Katrina?

Are you around next weekend (or are you going to avoid the incoming hordes--that does not refer to Jordan or me!!)?

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Saturday, 22 April 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Kyle (aka Fetchboy/Felonious Drunk/etc) is around but not so much on ILx. There was a guy named PJ who seems to have disappeared since the Dizzee Rascal show last year. So yeah it's pretty much me.

I'll be around next weekend, though my Jazzfest plans were screwed up by a poorly scheduled exam (Sunday morning wtf). I'm definitely down for some drinking.

What kind of food ideas are you looking for? A lot of stuff is open again (then again, a lot of stuff is not). Will you have a car? Mobility is important for getting to many of the best/less-crowded/tourist-free restaurants.

adam (adam), Saturday, 22 April 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

Me and my 3 buddies were thinking of renting a car, but hadn't decided what to do--we won't be there long--late Thursday night to Monday morning. We could also just take cabs and buses I guess. We thought we might also use a rent-a-car however to drive around a bit to get a better personal impression of the damage that was done (although we'll be mostly just at the fest). My buddy's sister got us and she and her friend a reservation one night at Red Fish Grill, a Brennan's restaurant on Bourbon Street. I was just looking to balance things and also go for some less-crowded Creole/Cajun/New Orleans/La type places (not stuff I can get in DC/MD/Va).

curmudgeon (Steve K), Sunday, 23 April 2006 05:41 (nineteen years ago)

im definitely up for something.

adam, did i tell you i'm actually working right now setting up the fest stages? where the F were you for psycho game show, by the way?

i'll be back to ilx some time in the next week when we get our wireless set up.

we should have a big meetup for the Big Daddy Kane and Special Ed show. that last sunday is gonna rule

fetchonoctavia, Sunday, 23 April 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

Psycho Game Show night was post-Ponchatoula strawberry festival. I passed out at like 7. Sorry. I'm down for Kane and Sp Ed. I hope the weather stays like it was this weekend.

As far as food goes, C, I recommend the Deanie's up by the lake (not the FQ location), touristy Maspero's, fucking VERTI MARTE and their 24-hour FQ delivery... Donald Link's new restaurant, Cochon, looks really, really, really good. I'll post more as I think of them.

adam (adam), Monday, 24 April 2006 02:17 (nineteen years ago)

Though if I lived in the Quarter I'd eat Verti Marte every meal. The styrofoam containers come wrapped in plastic and still dripping with grease.

adam (adam), Monday, 24 April 2006 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

Excellent. Thanks for the ideas--and do post more if ya think of them.

I see that K. Sanneh in the Sunday NY Times is still criticizing Jazzfest for its token approach to New Orleans rap--

"Rap music remains by far New Orleans's most popular musical export. Lil Wayne, Master P, Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, B. G., Mystikal and many other pioneers have sold millions of albums, and they have helped make their city an indispensable part of the hip-hop world. Unlike all the other musicians celebrated at post-Katrina tributes, these ones still show up on the pop charts, often near the top. (Juvenile's most recent album made its debut at No. 1, last month.) Yet when tourists and journalists descend upon the city next weekend, for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, they'll find only one local rapper on the schedule: Juvenile, who is to appear on the Congo Square Louisiana Rebirth Stage at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Maybe New Orleans rappers don't mind being left out. No doubt most of them prefer popularity — and its rewards — to respect. But why should they have to choose? "

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Monday, 24 April 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

BROADVIEW SEAFOOD

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 24 April 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

There was a guy named PJ who seems to have disappeared since the Dizzee Rascal show last year. So yeah it's pretty much me.

Dude, I'm still around...posting just a lil' bit on ILM here and there...I've actually seen you uptown a couple times lately, walking your dog...I've been back since about mid-November.
You should check out Cochon, I ate there Friday night and it was pretty good. I love that they have their own Boucherie in there. The ham hock was great. Hopefully I'll get out to Jazzfest one day out of seven.

p.j. (Henry), Monday, 24 April 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

From the DC thread today(but alas, i was not nearby):

"in case yr interested a group of louisiana shrimpers will be giving away free la shrimp in dupont this afternoon between 12:30 and 2.
as the press release they sent me puts it: "A free public event in Dupont Circle with fishermen and women from the Louisiana Shrimp Association, who are traveling to Washington, D.C., with 40,000 pounds of wild-caught shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico. Calling the journey 'The Voyage of Food Independence,' the shrimpers want to bring attention to their economic devastation from Hurricane Katrina, as well as from cheap imported farm-raised shrimp that floods the U.S. market from countries such as Vietnam, China, and Brazil.

The fishermen will distribute bags of shrimp for free, along with local recipes and educational materials, urging consumers to buy local wild-caught shrimp in the U.S., rather than imported farm-raised shrimp that is driving them out of business."

adam (adam), Monday, 24 April 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, I'm still around...posting just a lil' bit on ILM here and there.!!! Glad to hear it.

adam (adam), Monday, 24 April 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

Damnit, I miss NOLA. Damnit. Gonna be a few years until I can get back, unfortunately.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

You folks still recommend the Chart Room and Cooter Browns for imbibing?

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Cooter Brown's is good if you are all the way Uptown. Chart Room is pleasant for downtown. Neither are "destination" bars.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

I kinda want to eat at Cooter Brown's this time.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Meat pie sandwich w/ remoulade is hard to beat.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

I look forward to trying.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

i can make no promises about a ride tomorrow.
two friends i offered to bring have agreed to go, but might flake out last minute, but i would feel bad about revoking said offer because of a little distrust on my side.

fetch control, Tuesday, 25 April 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

Flying in late tonight. May go see Jordan's band Mama Dig Down Saturday night at Donna's. Not sure of other plans. Thanks for all the ideas...I likely won't have internet access...
