I'm sure its already been done, but they always evolve.

Turn Ons: Green eyes, black panty-hose, tiny freckles across the nose and cheeks, a very slight gap between the two front teeth, Helena Bonham Carter Fight Club hair, Romance language accents, aviator sunglasses, eating red meat, winking, staring, plays a musical instrument.

Turn Offs: Patchouli, cat love, vegans, happy trails and chin hairs, sorority chic, neon dyed hair, noserings, Candace Bushnellism, hypochondria, making it personal.

Cub, Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Too easy:

Turn ons: Hot slim chicks

Turn offs: The opposite

BUT - a consideration of animals, a refusal to buy anything that's been tested on animals and a love of movies in addition to being a hot chick is good.

Calum, Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

consideration of animals

you mean like 'girl, can i have a puppy for christmas?'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

How can anyone not like 'cat love'??? I swear, I could never have a relationship with anyone that didn't love cats. Cats are FAB. There is this video on PETA which shows a kitten in a science lab after being force fed some shit and it's fucking heartbreaking. I can't stand seeing cat's in pain or trouble or anything. I cry. Rivers.

Calum, Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Pussy.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Turn ons: Calum

Turn offs: Attractive Men

Hot Slim Chick, Friday, 18 April 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Turn on: 1
Turn off: 0

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Pussy.

Is this yr turn-on, hstencil?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but only if it's being tortured.

hstencil, Friday, 18 April 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Binary jokes rule!

Kim (Kim), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Turn On's: People who have enough experience in life to keep an open mind on attractiveness.

Turn Off's: Narrow minded fules!

Hot Fat Chick, Friday, 18 April 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have an irrational hatred of cats (coz of a new flat flea infestation incident)which normally I'm kinda ashamed of (especially around here) but this thread makes me happy to hate cats!!

smee (smee), Friday, 18 April 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

turn ons: glances
turn offs: stares

gaz (gaz), Friday, 18 April 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

gaz is correct!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 April 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Show a girl a picture of Missy Elliot or Alison Moyet and then show them a pic of Christina or Britney and ask them which they'd rather look like. Sorry mate, that's just life. And nothing wrong with liking slim hot chicks (though this being an internet chat room I'm sure I've offended someone along this way here).
Although I'm sure some guys here will tell me they honestly don't like hot slim chicks. ILE/ ILM never fails to amuse me...

But - hey - I don't grudge women for prefering someone with a six pack to someone with a pot belly.

Calum, Friday, 18 April 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

turn on-stereo

turn off-brain

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 18 April 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

So you're excluding 46% of the female population from being admired by Calum, if you listen carefully you should hear a collective sigh of relief....

smee (smee), Friday, 18 April 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also excluding a large percentage of the male population from being 'admired' by females. Christ, read my post.

And 'admired'? I'm talking about attraction here, not admiration.

Calum, Friday, 18 April 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Humble apologies, although I'm sure the 46% are relieved you're not attracted to them either.

smee (smee), Friday, 18 April 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Turn On: R U Tenone
Turn Off: Turn On The Bright Lights

(Cats: Yes)

Frazer, Friday, 18 April 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Turn on... is, rather worryingly, someone actually being interested in me. Life offers few turn ons of this nature.

Turn off... ignorance. Of any kind.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 18 April 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

smee, aren't you the one who hates small dogs too? Or am I getting my posters confused...?

Turn ons: Soft lips, Winks, Big hands, Peechees-esque sunglasses, Bangs that fall down on the face and sometimes cover eyes, Cute tennis shoes, Cat appreciation, HUGE record/cd collection, Laughs alot, Plays an instrument.

Turn offs: Swears off deoderant, Frat brother attitude, Chain Smokes (ok out of doors, but major turn off in small space), Preaches Right-wing belief system, Hates cats, Hates women.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 18 April 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

ons: funny, smart, arty, lovely necks

offs: long nails

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I like your list, mookieproof. Nice and simple and I agree with it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Turn Ons : Sexy dances to Marvin Gaye "come get to this"

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ons: smart, brunette, blue/gray eyes, smiles a lot (crooked smile is a big plus), likes cats & coffee, writes letters, cares about music (whether that's big record collection, arcane music-related knowledge or both), gets my most obtuse jokes even if she doesn't think they are funny.

offs: skinny like a stick, doesn't drink coffee, doesn't like cats, doesn't care about music, not smart or not funny, wears birkenstocks, thinks showing affection is some kind of competition.

martin mushrush (mushrush), Friday, 18 April 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

turn on: communicating with eye contact & smiles (especially from across a crowded room)

turn off: trying to do this and them not getting it

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, being misunderstood. I guess that's a pretty big turn off too.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

ons: smart, brunette, blue/gray eyes, smiles a lot (crooked smile is a big plus), likes cats & coffee, writes letters, cares about music (whether that's big record collection, arcane music-related knowledge or both), gets my most obtuse jokes even if she doesn't think they are funny.

mushrush, that is me! Too bad for you I'm taken. ;)

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

on : dimples. dark eyes (esp while reading).
off : owning a dog.

Frühlingsmute (Wintermute), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah, too bad for you martin's describing someone else!

hstencil, Friday, 18 April 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Another turn off... guys who think they're IT, in spite of their token protestations... and damnation on the puerile women who feed their putrid egotism!

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

turn on: Mazzy Star
turn off: Hole

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(THE BAND)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(I wanted more words beginning with 'pu,' but I couldn't work pusillanimous into it. Pungent was a near-miss.)

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

mushrush, that is me! Too bad for you I'm taken. ;)

Actually, I'm taken as well, by a woman who meets that description.

I was objective with the "ons" list instead of just describing her, too.

martin mushrush (mushrush), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Turn ons: Just about everything
Turn offs: There is a certain type of skinny, white guy that I really find a turn off.

I tend to stare, for hours on end, at the object of my attraction. I did not realise this might be a turn off. I will attempt multiple glances in future and see if enhances our attraction.

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, well I do stare unfortunately (even though if someone did that to me I'd prob find it a tad uncomfortable). I realize some find it creepy but I can't help it. Must control urge to do this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Ons: If you can make me laugh, have a nice smile and bathe regularly, I'm IN
Offs: people who chew with their mouths open and who hit on my friends

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Ons: Eyes, lips, laughter, having already gone through her melodramatic phase and gotten over it, confidence, intelligence, and an appreciation of at least some of the things I appreciate, with bonus points if they're things my friends tend not to like or know about

Offs: Pretentiousness, heavy involvement in a subculture, Ivory Tower syndrome, extensive drug use, low self-esteem, having friends I can't stand (that one seems weird but is because of an ex whose friends were almost entirely people I couldn't stand, which made me wonder if the things she liked about me were the things I was trying to change about myself; I tend to dislike most the people who share my flaws but don't see them as flaws).

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The Band were cool.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

does "heavy involvement in a subculture" include being an ilXor?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really. I guess "heavy," "involvement," and "subculture" are all subjective, but I'm thinking more of the folks who spend all their money/free time on the SCA or Trek conventions, permanent residents of the BDSM scene, lifestyle stoners, recreational activists ... basically people it makes sense for me to meet as friends, but wouldn't want to date.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

On: Smart, funny, honest (tactfully rather than blatantly), considerate, a wide range of interests. And cool eyes.

Off: Disdainful/judgemental about differing opinions etc. (me:"I love this song! It reminds me of blahblahfondmemory..." him: "This song sucks."). Difficulty expressing emotion. Bad hygiene. Obnoxiously religious or conservative.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I figured you were describing your significant other, martin mushy. I was just kidding. But maybe she could be my new best friend as we are so much alike? Does she post here?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Another turn off... guys who think they're IT, in spite of their token protestations... and damnation on the puerile women who feed their putrid egotism!

egotism is hot. if they're worthy enough i'll gladly feed their self-obsession and egomania, as long as they feed mine too.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Turn on: tomboys who are still totally feminine, ie talk about sports while wearing lipstick and a dress
Turn off: tomboys who have no feminity

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

on: distinctive noses, dark hair, light hearted, funny, a certain creative spark

off: anger, not being able to take it easy

jel -- (jel), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

ons: wavy/curly hair, sense of style, s-m-a-r-t-s, ambition, caring about one's body, impeccable grammar, spontenaeity/playfullness, sharp wit, being passionate about things, independence

offs: blown-dry hair, no sense of humor, indecisiveness, too cool to get excited, no cultural awareness, not interested in music, piercings (except for the nose and ears), religious, big boobs, not having one's own interests, trying to prove how totally compatible we are in every way

stephanie tuerk (stephanie), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I figured you were describing your significant other, martin mushy. I was just kidding. But maybe she could be my new best friend as we are so much alike? Does she post here?

Hmmm... I should have added "gives me nicknames based on my last name" to my turn-offs list.

And honest, my turn-ons list really was pretty objective. It has pretty much been the same since before I met my SO. Her dead-ringer status for that description is a bit of a [very] happy accident.

Yes, she posts here. In fact, she's been here longer than I have and is largely responsible for my being here.

martin mushrush (mushrush), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I should have added "gives me nicknames based on my last name" to my turn-offs list.
*Humph!*

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that you could have known... I don't hold grudges or anything.

martin mushrush (mushrush), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The egotism of nasty, ugly little bastards is hot, though? Only hot if *they're* hot.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 18 April 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

how ugly are we talking?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 18 April 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm... at least as ugly as me, I guess, because anyone that ugly has nothing to up themselves about.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 18 April 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

And couple that ugliness/egotism with a profound lack of charm and manners, and really the verdict has to be: Extermination.

Pass me that bazooka.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 18 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

SEXY DANCING TO "COME GET TO THIS" MUST HAPPEN TONIGHT. Where's my robe and corduroy slippers....

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Party at the manse tonight.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

where'd I leave my bunny ears?

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

be prepared "Come Get To This" is kicking off the crush tape. Maybe the cover will feature me in my robe.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

That would be the absolute best thing that could possibly happen ever.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot wait

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Please, please tell me you'll be holding a pipe.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I can if you want. I have a few. And....my chest hair will be in full effect. I'll wear some bling too.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I need a new battery for the digital cam. off to the mall.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to quit this board for good if I don't get a
FUCKING killfile.

squirl plise (Squirrel_Police), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Turn ons: brown eyes, dark hair, soft hands, nice voice, well-read, ability to swing between serious and goofy.
Turn offs: backwards caps, big rings, baggy jeans, earrings, highfiving friends in public.

It always worries me that no one finds redheads, or even fake redheads, attractive.

Mandee, Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

martin mushrush is OTM in a very nice way

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

egotism is hot. if they're worthy enough i'll gladly feed their self-obsession and egomania, as long as they feed mine too

I feel this way too, and I know it's not a popular viewpoint.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It always worries me that no one finds redheads, or even fake redheads, attractive.

What! Don't be silly. Redheads rock.

Chris's transformation into the guy on the inside CD tray photo of Pulp's This is Hardcore is a beautiful thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

hygiene schmygiene! does anyone besides Kate like the dirty?

Aaron A., Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm filthy today, I didn't bother to change my clothes from yesterday when I stayed up all night to write my essay. I just got up, rather forgetfully, and left with my essay to drop it off. Then I went shopping, was out all damned day, like a homeless person. It's actually quite alarming that I was so out of it that I did that because I'm usually not half as rock n' roll.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

livin the Jay-Z songs

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Being a slob is an art form. I'm an expert. I just haven't convinced the world of its inherent sexiness yet, though.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

turn-offs: subscribing to "struggling artists" myths, not being into music, being a hippy, being stoic, being unable to look after yourself, g-strings, people who ONLY EVER talk about intellectual stuff (EVER HEARD OF FUN??), blond boys, people who are squeamish about periods, healthy girls who are into losing weight.
turn ons: owning a T Rex songbook, liking human league and heaven 17, receding hairlines, frizzy hair, a mop of clean dark hair, girls with red hair and freckles (otherwise known as girls who look like tash), dancing, being emotionally expressive and passionate (i like people who yell and cry and all that shit), corrected vision, people who like eating salt'n'vinegar chips and tomato'n'onion dip, people who don't deny themselves food, people who are passionate about music, people who like feminist theory and queer theory.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

turn-offs : people, emotions, stuff

duane, Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

turn-ons : knee jerk anti americanism

duane, Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

there was supposed to be a tag at the end of my post, closing the narcissism.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

there was supposed to be a tag in my post that would make you lose your mind & howl like a dog

duane, Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Candace Bushnellism

elaborate

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Candace Bushnellism, i.e. "Chiction" or "chicktion." Whatever you call it I hate it. I don't necessarily mind shallow materialism in all circumstances, I just don't care for it through the lenses of Carrie whateverhernameisinSexintheCity.

Cub, Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

turn-ons: good mixtapes.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that should have been obvious. i was mixing ppl up.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

on: people who remind me of the most interesting parts of my personality

off: " " " " " " least " " " " " (also "most boring" etc.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 19 April 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ON: Ability to 'look good' naturally without being anal, pretentious, obsessive or fake; a wide range of tastes in food, drink, music, sport/hobbies, ability to emotionally adapt (again has to be natural); healthy work/leisure balance. Being interesting is the great forgotten aphrodisiac.
OFF: Control-freakery, assumption of entitlement, obsession with image (including self-image), acting tough and non-PC towards 'the missus and kids' when his mates are around, all boring, crude, territorial, dominance-establishing behavior (such as swearing loudly in the first sentence to gauge reaction).

After 25 years I'm still a sucker for a roaring fire and a clean, aired, lived-in but tidy-ish 'bed-sit' with empty wine bottles on the top of the bookcase (the shelves of which should be full). If they're beer bottles, I'm immediately looking for a better excuse to make my excuses.
Evidence of ability to cook: a huge plus. Smell of stale pizza, or stale anything: I'm calling a taxi. Travel posters on the wall: great, unless you obviously have never been north of the Broadmeadows Ford factory. Sports Illustrated calendars: I'm getting bored. When was that taxi due again?
Calling your house 'Darren's Love Shack' or similar (regardless of whether or not your name is Darren): Stuff the taxi, I'll walk home.

Karen, Saturday, 19 April 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

If only we lived 12,000 miles closer, Di! No songbook, but having seen T.Rex play, I'm sure I'd be in with a chance!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 19 April 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

turn offs

hellbaby (hellbaby), Saturday, 19 April 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

turn ons but also sadly still drummers

hellbaby (hellbaby), Saturday, 19 April 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Turn-ons: pale skin, talent at musical instruments, ability to write beautifully, vast intelligence, propensity to smile, tight strappy t-shirts with nothing underneath, patterned tights. Also must not mind that I think cats are hugely over-rated (I'm allergic to them).

Turn-offs: people who remind me of my bad points, too numerous to list. Smoking, dreadlocks, dyed hair, fakery of any kind, basically.

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 19 April 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"smee, aren't you the one who hates small dogs too? Or am I getting my posters confused...?"

I don't hate wee dogs I just have a problem with one in particular (and it's not really her fault it's her owners). I love dogs, honest.

smee (smee), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't care who you are, what you've done, or what you're like; if you have a cool haircut, I will want to talk to you.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

people who hit on everyone. ahem every man on ilx, please pay attention to this.

ahem Ally please pay attention to this ;-)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Thermostats, light switches, the li'l (|) button...

petra jane (petra jane), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

nick, I only started doing that when I got really tired of every single girl getting lathered over, it's kind of debasing. Also: trying to turn off 90% of this board. I'm aware it's unattractive behavior--the difference is that I'm not getting the impression at all that a lot of the guys around here realize it?

I'm not trying to start a bigger discussion, but from a personal point of view: you see the same, oh, maybe 5-10 guys remarking upon EVERY SINGLE PICTURE (using that thread as an example, it's not the only one) with foaming at the mouth about how HOTTTTTT and SEXXXY each poster is. It's like you're all Pavlov's horndogs, and it's not really special or nice to be complimented anymore because it's an automaton.

But on the other hand, that's me being jaded and wanting to use the phrase "Pavolv's horndogs".

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Except about my pix, right? Cuz those were genuine posts?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

turn on: them smoothly taking things from me like wine glasses or smokes, partaking, and then slyly asking "can I have some of this?" (particularly when accompanied by the specifically-far-longer-than-necessary hand-to-hand contact)

turn off: them never laughing at anything EVER

(I'm sorry Ally, I was just being silly. But I'm glad for provoking such a thought-out post, if only cuz I'm totally stealing that "Pavlov's Horndogs" bit.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Nobody lathered or foamed at the mouth over me, so even Pavlovs Horndogs (I'm stealing that one too, I like it!) are a bit picky......*weeps gently in Graham type style once again*

smee (smee), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, that slobbering on the picture thread annoys me too. I think I have a thing against telling hot women that they are hot--they don't need anymore ego-boosting, I reckon.
Considering how many guys are around here, I think it's expected that there will be 5-10 Pavlov's horndogs.

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I just get tired of it because then it creates this weird circle jerk in which everyone seems to think that you are posting your pictures to get these replies, which isn't necessarily true. I can't vouch for everyone, but I just like posting pictures (which is why the picture thread also features pictures of my family is disco wear and my house)--but the second you post a picture with yourself in it it's like PHWOOARRR HOLD THE PRESSES! etc etc. It's to the point where I think I could post a picture of myself covered in bees and at least six men will post about how extra special sexy I am. Which is fine except then it creates this massive negative impact in everyone else, that so-and-so is trying to prove how hot they are, they are so this and that, blah blah blah and honestly I'm just babbling.

Either there's a massive lack of jerking off in these parts, or WAY TOO MUCH OF IT.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

PS I KNOW YOU'RE ALL FLOORED BY MY PERCEPTION AND MY SHOCKING NEW THEORY

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus, now it's gotten to the point where you almost feel obligated to tell someone how hottt they are if no one else has, regardless of whether they are or not. The abundance of positive feedback makes a lack of feedback seem like negative feedback.

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I've ever slobbered on the poster picture threads, at least I hope I haven't, that would be most unlike me.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yeah, exactamundo. And if you only give feedback on people you honestly think are hot, then people think you are a bitch. I actually got that in an email, that the impression of me is that I'm stuck up because I "suppose [I] only compliment people when [I] mean it"!!!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, just wait until you get old and ugly. You'll miss the attention and you'll wonder why you ever complained about it.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the pix thread is fun. I'm not bothered by all the you're-so-hottt stuff. There are lots of hot male ILXors too. In fact, I think we have a pretty amazingly hot group of posters in general (unless half of the people are posting fake pix or something).

You've got alot of people crushin' on you right now Ally - How bad could it be?

I have to admit that this discussion kind of makes me feel bad because I was so happy that some folks responded to my new pix positively.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I never really respond to pics unless I really have something to say about them (ie yours sarah, I thought they were great), and certainly didn't post one 'cos I wanted anyone to say anything about it - like Ally, I just like posting them. (The links never work, but hey, I'm an idiot).

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, are the PHWOARers only responding to you in that way or are they also appreciative of your non-picture posts? Are you saying it's just a physical thing (because I know I've gone PHWOAR over regular text-y posts) or is it just the PHWOARing itself that is putting you off?

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, I do agree with you, but you are in the rare position of being unequivocally and classically good-looking - you look attractive in every picture I've ever seen of you (an accident? I doubt it). The great majority of the rest of us, simply, don't. So it's quite nice to be complimented; some people like to take it further, on and off ILX, and some people even manage to get horizontal. It's the nature of the thing.

As Chris said, a lot of the compliments will be in part motivated by the niceness, coolness, whatever that people express through their verbal posts. But what can you say to a picture? "You look like your political opinions are really well though out"?

Most of us *don't* find that wherever we go we're leered at, or only get attention because we're hott. It must be a real pain at times, sure, but how much sympathy do you really, in all honesty, think you deserve? And can you really dislike the attention, when there are probably more pics of you than of anyone else?

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It isn't necessary to respond to a picture post. Just look and file it away. When you meet people IRL, would you immediately tell them how hot they are? Maybe you would, but it's pretty gauche IMO.

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

turn ons: what i got
turn offs: what i dont

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

TURN-ONS: Prematurely balding. Sizable ass. Owns breadmaker. Ability to play an instrument. Has website. Working knowledge of local architecture. Owns toy poodle named "Taffy."

TURN-OFFS: Cellphone. Obvious tattooage. Bedhead. Knowledge of fine wines. Promiscuity. Bad breath. Big Pavement fan.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I am Michael Daddino's perfec' match!

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

When you meet people IRL, would you immediately tell them how hot they are?

I'd be far more likely to stare at them all creepy-like and then curse myself for never getting the nerve up to talking to them. So I think this might be healthier. Maybe.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not Daddino's perfect match! Also, bedhead is a turn on. Assuming we're using the term to mean the same thing. (Actually, even if we're not...)

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, obv me and daddino should be together aside from the toy poodle and bad breath ones

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I don't think that's my point at all. I don't know, I just don't like the feeling that people are just blurting out "compliments" because they feel they should, or that if you don't say something it's equivocal to an insult. I just like showing pictures around, I think they're fun.

On the other hand, like I said, I'm speaking out of turn because I get the impression that people post them up to get the comments so whatever.

JBR, I already am old and ugly, and bitter as well. It's all good, I like it that way.

Mark, not once did I ask for sympathy or even say people shouldn't, merely that seeing the same group of people respond the same way to EVERY SODDING PICTURE is kind of bizarre and oversexed and seems ingenuine to me, but like I said I'm also in the position of being called a self-centered bitch for not doing the same thing and only complimenting (both in text and picture posts) when I have something to actually say.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not a million miles from being Daddino's dream match either. However, I don't remembering him saying I was hott, so maybe it's not as simple as that. Sigh.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The first thing that springs to mind when reading this It must be a real pain at times, sure, but how much sympathy do you really, in all honesty, think you deserve? And can you really dislike the attention, when there are probably more pics of you than of anyone else? is that it's not that far away from things like "she was/wasn't wearing _____, so she does/doesn't deserve _______." I know that isn't what you meant, Mark, and please don't think that I'm singling you out or trying to point fingers and say you.are.bad., but I really think Ally (or anyone else) should be allowed to post as many pictures as they want and not have to deal with this attitude. She's a good looking woman, yes, this is true, but she's also just a person sharing parts of her life with people she likes.

(This always sounds better and makes more sense in my head and i hope I haven't offended anyone, but I just wanted to say that...)

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, you could walk up to them and talk about something else besides how hot they are. For some reason, I don't think hot chicks/guys are attracted to people who's opening line is 'gee-whiz, you sure are purdy'. Put some more thought into it.

(god you people post fast!)

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Let me amend that...

TURN-ON: Bedhead achieved via benign neglect.

TURN-OFFS: Bedhead achieved via hair-care products.

And sometimes I wish there were a delete function.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHAHAHA I am going to start telling everyone I meet "Boy you got a nice ass!"

I'm really not asking for sympathy nor am I offended by it! It was a metathought in regards to the overall imbalance of the Illuminati shadow figures consistently slobbering over every single woman and me wondering what they expect that accomplishes! Honestly! Please, no sympathy! Continue hating me! Please! Also please stop calling me classically good looking because now I'm embarassed that I even brought this up! I'M NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT GETTING ATTENTION MERELY THE WAYS THEY ARE EXPRESSED IN A SEEMINGLY INSINCERE WAY!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

But that's silly. Few people's first response to Ally or anyone else has been "wow you're hot"; we've mostly all posted in a skajillion threads before on all sorts of topics. The "hubba hubba" is coming well into the "getting to know you" phase.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I am MD's perfec' match! 'Cept for not bein' hott an that.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess what I'm saying is "Rowr, hottt" doesn't seem like a good compliment to me and I'd rather see people, if they are going to comment, specify what they like about the person's pic, then.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Your clarification makes way more sense.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Chris, I was responding to your post about not talking to them at all--'them' being people you see for the first time IRL, not 'them' being people you know on ILX. You can't really compare the two situations since IRL you know what a person looks like before you know what they ARE like, and vice versa (usually) on the web.

Luna, I didn't mean it as you're taking it, though I understand why you read it as such and, as ever, I put things rather badly. I'm glad there wasn't a delete function, as you rox0r.

Ally's response made some stuff clearer too, but I still can't quite accept that someone posts pic after pic and then has a problem with people reacting to them in the very limited ways anyone *can* react to a picture.

I always like looking at Ally's pictures, and she's totally entitled to post as many as she wants (I want to see the bees pic in particular). But by definition, she's looking for some kind of response. We're not on ILX to talk to ourselves. The act of posting is with the hope of soliciting some kind of reaction in return, surely? And even if you don't want a response, it's still some kind of territory marker, an assertion of character, which affects the rest of the community in a similar way.

What I didn't take into account, though, was Ally's comment about a certain number of ILXors making "phwoar" comments at every hott chick/dude who posts a picture. Maybe, like the ever honest Martin (apologies if I'm taking your name in vain), they simply mean it? I can think of a couple of dickheads here who I would say fit the "oversexed/ingenuine" criteria, but most people like complimenting and being complimented, so I can't really see it as a bad thing, even if one judges that several people deserve your compliments.

(I also know that this concept was one of the turn-offs mentioned, which I guess was the central point in this particular thread.)

*gets Nabico-like in his attempts to actually say what he means*

What I think I was trying to say is that most people don't have to deal with being complimented *too much* on their looks, which is something Ally has happen to her and I, for example, don't. The point I was arguing is that most people simply aren't in a position to agree with Ally, rather than saying Ally was wrong for her own personal take on the situation.

Ally, apologies, I didn't mean to imply you were looking for sympathy. I put it very crassly, as usual.

Final thought: anyone who is the recipient of a compliment that derives from someone feeling they should - well, odds are they are the ones who'll most appreciate it. We use white lies all the time in real life, so why is it bad here to maybe occasionally give someone a moment of pleasure by complimenting them even if they're not necessarily "deserving" of it, by whichever criteria are being used?

As for it being akin to an insult; well, yes, this happens anywhere where egos are involved. I have blurted out "wuv me!" posts on various "who on ILX is great" threads - I'm quite capable of realising that I don't necessarily merit it, but that doesn't stop me craving approval.

Ironic I should say I hate fakery and yet approve of false compliments. But it's just not black and white. All the above is just one side of the situation, the side that I feel is worth arguing right now.

Ah, shut up, Mark.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem with everything going on in this discussion is that it assumes it was talking about myself at all. I used the example of me-covered-with-bees simply because saying, oh, luna-covered-with-bees would be rude because it'd be bringing her in without her explicit permission to do so. Otherwise, I wasn't talking about myself! My "I fucking hate this board" comment was to do with the fact that three other people responded as if I had a personal problem with what someone said about me specifically and that I wasn't making a general observatory "complaint" (if you must use the word)--and then someone else called it "self-obsessive". What the fuck? You say 40,000 TIMES that you are not talking about yourself (in fact, I get very little response to my pix anymore, because everyone's seen them), and you still get labelled as self-obsessive around these parts because other people talk about you.

So, yeah. That's not really directed at you, Mark, it's just a general rant as to why the discussion went straight to shit for me.

Martin almost always posts in a way that seems honest--not "ROAR!" but he will indicate things he liked about a picture. He's not one of the people that I was talking about, only saying because you brought him up. It's not something that really bothers me at all, it's merely something I noticed and find a little off-putting from the group that does it.

The funny thing is, I get treated worse on the internet because of the way I look than I do in real life. It's weird because generally everyone makes it out like it's very much the reverse situation! Again--a rather emotionless observance than an actual complaint or something to be sympathised with, I'm well aware that it's not exactly sympathetic, and that if it really bothered me, I could just leave.

OR KILL ALL OF YOU

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant that as a joke--I've had my foot in mouth many times here, mostly on ILM--but I guess there's people WORSE than me here. I TRY to give people the benefit of the doubt. There are days though...

BTW, your the bee's knees

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I'm being honest, except possibly when I'm obviously going over the top, as in asking fifteen (or whatever) of the women here to marry me. I think there are an extraordinary number of really gorgeous women here, and while you can find good-looking women all over the place, I don't meet so many who are lovely AND intelligent and interesting and funny people. Ally and Felicity and JBR and oh good grief I'm not running through that whole list again are all these things, and I am therefore hugely drawn to them. Pics on their own don't do that: I saw a beautiful pic of Carey over on ILM before I'd really otherwise registered her name (I don't spend too much time on ILM), but it meant nothing - until later, when I'd registered her as another interesting, etc., person.

I tend to assume that what with thousands of miles and a different country and my being twenty years older and a hundredth as attractive, that they know I am never going to seriously come on to them and give them bad dreams or something. When I did say something similar about someone I actually see at FAPs, Kate, it was in response to her direct question, and I did communicate with her privately to make sure I wasn't creeping her out. I avoid telling people like Mark C here how attractive I think they are because they might start steering clear of me at FAPs and stuff. Whoops!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin, that's kind of what I mean, your posts always seem to come from a genuine place and you were in no way one of the Pavlov's Hounddogs in my mind--you always have something to say about the photograph, it's not just like some kind of weird indie version of Mardi Gras going on.

Again I reiterate this is not about me as my photos don't get response anymore unless they are pictures of my family in disco clothes! I mean, jesus, I wish I had Pavlov's Hounddogs as my "problem" on ILX, considering!

Again, all I'm really saying is that I wish people had more to say besides "yr hottt", or at least would phrase "yr hottt" in an interesting way. Most people DO do this, or have things to say so it's not like this massive wide scale phenomenon of evil going on.

Or they photoshop Ned's picture into it and that's like the same thing as commentating.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I discussed this thing with gareth ages ago, pretty much what Ally is saying. I can't remember the discussion though. I think there is more flirting stuff on ILE than ever, and that's fair enough, the content reflects the demand I guess.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin, I think perhaps you can rest assured that the average ILX0r is quite confident that you are perving on him or her.

So if they aren't steering clear of you at FAPs already then you needn't worry about it.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

There are days when I just feel like a big asshole

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

And do you indulge in those hungers?

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I shouldn't tell you how hottt you look in your 'Russian spy' photo, Ally? Okay, my lips are sealed.

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

See, discussing that it looks like a spy photo is interesting! By interesting I mean embarassing but that's different! I'd rather read like 10,000 flirty responses that even said something as TOTALLY UNUSUAL as "nice smile" or something than just a page of "RARRR!"

Hehehe though with all of my noises I've been doing today, it seems much more glamourous.

Ronan when are you coming to America, I am under the impression that we all need to hang out.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't Chris, no - maybe that's my problem

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to harp on it, but that photo made you look different (tres sophisticated) compared w/all other pictures you've posted. Keep that stylist! (Did you get 'dolled up' specially or is that just run-of-the-mill Ally?)(of course, not that there's anything wrong w/run-of-the-mill Ally. Errr)

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, it's the exact reverse. The FAP pictures are me all "fixed up" with blown out hair and specially chosen clothes. The ID photo was just me yanking my hair up and running to get a picture taken after waking up really late that morning.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

So now if we photoshop ned, thats bad? I'm hot.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently it's a sign of greatness. I shall not disagree. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

hey ally, i hear what you're saying.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, someday I guess. Maybe this year maybe next year, I am the FAP Guerilla. not gorilla, please.

turn offs: dishonesty, insincerity, waffly decision-making, insecurity, inability to balance a redox equation in a time of need, ppl who don't like beer, ppl who look like barbie

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a definate difference between a well formed compliment and ROWR HAWT etc. The latter is like a load of slavering builders hanging off some scaffolding and could be quite intimidating and pretty offensive. I hold off commenting on how people look, even in real life because to me it doesn't matter that much. Anyone who knows me knows that They'll have to drag any kind of comment about their aesthetic out of me with foreceps. Here I'm doubly wary because of the number of ways that text can be read. I;ve never though the pic threads were about comments really it just interesting to see what some of you look like.

So I'm with Ally. the Pavlov's Horndogs should realise how frightfully unbecoming of them their behavior is.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Unbecoming = embarrassing. I don't enjoy seeing people openly lust after others. Ally et al didn't put pictures up to be slathered over, they put them up because it was a thread asking what everyone looks like.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

''inability to balance a redox equation in a time of need''

damn! ;-)
